Hi, I'm bob 64 and was diagnosed with sleep apnea about three months ago. After two different machines numerous masks and setting changes, I'm not any better. All the hassle has resulted in absolutely no improvement. Very frustrating.

Hi everyone.I am a 38 year old mother of one. I started my sparkpeople adventure 3 weeks ago. I am also a new Cpap user. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea about 2 months ago. I love my machine but find that ever since I started using it i wake up well rested but stuffed up. Kinda hard to breathe through your nose when its clogged.

Thanks for your response. I don't know if he would wear ear plugs or not, but I tend to doubt it. I really don't think it is the noise that bothers him, he is just resistant to change, and this is a change.

hi and welcome to the team!

As for me, my hubby hasn't given me any problems since I got my machine 2 years ago, but he's also been sleeping on a hospital bed in our living room since he started having back problems 3 years ago...

my mom also has Sleep Apnea.... so far as i know, her machine doesn't bother my dad.

do you snore if you sleep w/ o the mask? To me, having to hear someone else snore while I'm trying to sleep is MUCH more annoying that any Cpap machine ever would be...
Would he consider ear plugs?

Hi, my name is Sarah, and I joined this group because I have OSA, and have some questions about it. I have a brand new CPAP machine that is very quiet, but my husband doesn't like me to use it. Has anyone else had to deal with unsporting spouses in this matter?

Hi, my name is Barb
I am 70, and I have suffered with sleep apnea for years. I was diagnosed with it about 3 years ago. I started out on a cpap. But I had day time drowiness, couldn't stay awake, so miserable. A few months back I was put on a bipap and it has made a world of difference. I no longer take naps every day and I don't feel sleepy. I have more energy.

I am retired from Insurance business. I was a Life & Health Agent and a Claims Representative.

Hi
My name is Dee.
My user name is moisha1.
I live in Minnesota.
My hobbies are reading, gardening, crocheting, and recently have started to walk.
I have had sleep apnea for six years now. I was diagnosed after almost dying from it. Mine was so bad that I used to fall out of bed at night and find myself on the floor in the morning.

I am on the bi-pap and have used it regularly with no problems using it. I just recently joined sp and have lost ten pounds to date.

Hello everyone

I have Sleep Apnea. I have had my machine for
6 months. The first 3 months, I struggled. I
started out with pillows. Then went to a nose
face cover, then I went to a full face cover and
I also have another nose cover that I was constantly getting sores on the bridge of my nose.

My pressure is 11. Mine is also a humidifier.

I wear mine for about 3 hours then I wake up out of a sound sleep and I can't get back to sleep, so I
take it off and then I seem to be able to sleep.

I was doing better with mine, but then I got strep throat and wasn't able to wear it at all. I'm just
starting to get back to it.

Hope I can get some pointers from the rest of you.

Hugs,
Gayle

Hi, I am excited to find the Sleep Apnea team! I have been struggling with sleep apnea for years. I still have a problem being compliant! I am on my second machine and fourth mask. My Dr. wants me to go in for study number 3 and I am resistant to that! Conquering this problem is way harder than losing weight!

I have one of the best Drs. in the country, Dr. Jonathan Schwartz, MD. in Oklahoma City. I am thankful for that. I am also thankful that I know I have this problem so that I can properly deal with it. I'm looking forward to all the things I can learn from the group.

Hey all you "new guys"! I just thought I'd stop in and welcome you to the Sleep Apnea Team. We all struggle with sleep issues here. Even with a CPAP, I still have problems with it. I was given a new machine in Novemeber and I called the company and told them I don't like the machine even after trying to like it and they are giving me the runaround. I told them I want to exchange it and they keep giving me excuses. I guess I should just call the insurance company and complain!

Hi Sandy,
Welcome to the SparkPeople Sleep Apnea Team!
emoticon emoticon

Congratulations on your weight loss! That might very well help with your apnea problem.

Good for you for deciding to seek help, but too bad you can't get in sooner for an official diagnosis and help.

You might look on the lists of local groups posted by IAMSLEEPER to see whether there's one near you. If so, someone there might be able to make some helpful suggestions about what's available in your area.

There are some pillows that might help position your head to help keep your airway open while you're sleeping.

How long have you had Sleep Apnea?: I can remember gasping for breath in my sleep about 10 years ago, but didn't have it diagnosed yet. Now I have some insurance, but now I need to find a doctor and the earliest appointments are not for 4 or 5 months.
What are you doing to treat it?: sleeping with a fan, and hoping loosing weight will help a bit.

Hi Everyone, I'm new to Sparks and have joined a couple of other groups and just found this one. I, like all of you, also have sleep apnea and have been using a Cpap machine for about 5 years now. I see that the topic of traveling with it has popped up. I travel a great deal and when I'm overseas I simply leave the humidifier part at home and it has never been a problem for me. You might want to ask your doctor if this is a solution for you.

Pj, I was wondering, is there any reason you couldn't wear earplugs when you go to bed?

Wearing them might at least take enough of the noise away so that you can fall asleep faster.

For myself, whenever I'm sharing a room or staying in a strange hotel, wearing them helps me to be able to go to sleep. (yes, the usually fall out by morning, but I do seem to sleep well on the times i do use them).

Everyone's different, of course. But my personal experience with sleep apnea would be more that it makes me tired, and then I tend to want to eat, I suppose to have more energy. I thought it was one of the reasons I gained so much weight over the years.

CHICORYA, Not sure what is taken the doctor so long he said he was waiting for the doctor at the hospital where I had the sleep test done to read the report and he would discuss the CPAP with me on my next appointment which isn't until Feb 12. The doctor's at the hospital I had the sleep test done are all crazy. I cant believe it's been over a month and they still haven't read the report. I guess my doctor figures I have the oxygen so there is no rush for the CPAP, I dont really know. But, I still cant get to sleep at night I lay there till 2am, when I finally get to sleep though I sleep until 6 or 7 am. I cant use the oxygen, I never know when I am going to go to sleep it makes so much noise and the tubes in my nose dry out my nose and it makes my throat hurt. I am thinking this is also causing me to loose weight very slow, do you think the sleep apnea can be causing me to loose the weight slow?

Hey PattyKat,
emoticon emoticon

How long have you known about your sleep apnea? My experience is that often sleep apnea makes you tired, and your body tells you to eat something for energy. That makes you gain weight, and that makes the apnea even worse, of course.

Hi PJC,
Good for you for losing some weight!!

emoticon emoticon

The thing about it is that, if your airway is closing off when you're sleeping, then that oxygen isn't getting into your lungs nearly as much as it should. What's taking your doctor so long?

It sounds as if your oxygen level is going down really very low. And I'm certain that can cause headaches, or make them worse if you have other causes as well, such as tension, sinusitis, or vision problems.

I am assuming they're going to have you hook your oxygen onto your CPAP. I guess, if your airway is closing off, your oxygen isn't doing as much good as it will when your breathing isn't interrupted.

If we are to go on living together on this Earth, we must all be responsible for it.

Welcome Patty!
as you can tell by my previous posts, I just found out I have sleep apnea about 2 months ago.
as far as headaches, I take ibuprofen when they get really bad, which is rare.
You might find that, as you get used to the c-pap machine, you will have headaches less often, I don't know.

I think, and I could be wrong, that the mask/ C-pap machine is better than an oxygen tank becuase it forces your airway to stay open (as long as the c-pap machine is set at the right level), and just plain oxygen wouldn't do that.

Hi my name is Patty and I am 41 years old was just diagnosed with sleep apnea, it's really scary. I am on the oxygen machine right now but, I believe I will be switching over to the cpap machine. Is the mask any better than the oxygen tank? What do you all do for your headaches? I get them really bad in the morning then again towards evening.

emoticon LOL!! Just realized I joined last night but apparently something shiny caught my attention before I actually introduced myself. My name is Lynette and I'm 51. Joined SparkPeople a year ago, but quit (without quitting) early spring. Reached the point of total "disgutation" with my weight so I'm back. Diagnosed with apnea Oct 07 and have been a mask-head since.
Have no qualms with my machine (Remstar M Series), just the standard beefs of waking up 20 times a night with air leaks. Have to do full-face mask (Mirage Quattro) 'cuz I can't keep my mouth shut at night - come to think of it, kinda have the same problem during the day... emoticon
Okay, that's me. Anxious to dialog and find out how you all sleep through the night air-leak free.... (it could happen...maybe?) emoticon

It's not so good that I haven't been here but what a nice surprise to find so many new members. I will also be adding a few co-leaders. Nancy expressed her desire to be added. If anyone else is interested in being a team leader, just let me know.

I just learned that my insurance replaces my CPAP machine every three years. So I got a new one last Saturday. It's SOOOO quiet compared to the other one I had. The new one is a Fisher/Paykel Sleepstyle 200 witht the humidifier, which is nice in the winter.

I think the right mask and having it fit properly can make a huge difference. Let us know how you're sleeping in our other forum!

Thanks for the WElcome, ChickoryA2!

I just had my 2nd sleep study (1st one w/ the mask) last night. The poor tech had fun running back & forth getting masks for me to try on.... tried on about 8 before we found one that fit! I liked the mask, the air pressure was great once I got used to it... couldn't even tell the machine was on, loved how quiet the machine was. I think the mask was a little too tight, but that's okay (especialy after how many I tried on last night but didn't work because of leakage), my face will recover eventually LOL! But I have a hard time sleeping in new places, so didn't sleep well last night.
Can't wait to get a machine & try it at home :)

Hello to all new members. It's really GREAT to have you with us! We're all working at supporting each other. We all share having sleep issues, and many of us have equipment issues, too. I've had sleep apnea for many years (starting when I was a size 5), but have been on a CPAP for about 7 years after a false start and then not using it for about 2 years until I was just TOO tired. Went back and had a new study and some equipment updates. Now I don't sleep without it.

Greetings. Just started w/ the CPAP Saturday 7/26. Slept all night Sat. with it, and every night since have taken it off in my sleep. This morning Kathy woke me and told me to put it back on, but it was 15 minutes to the alarm so I blew it off. (no pun intended) I know it's going to take some getting used to; I just hope it doesn't take a long time.

I am new to the group. I am not new to sleep apnea! My husband has been complaining for years about my stopping breathing during the night.

I went through the sleep clinic and was diagnosed with sleep apnea and hypoxia.

I recently within the last 6 weeks, have started with the CPAP machine. I have a Remstar Pro M series machine. I am still getting used to it! Most nights it doesn't bother me but then there are some when I take it off about 3 ot 4 AM. I have been asked if I sleep better, but have urinary issues that have me getting up so much during the night that I can't tell!

I have two sisters who also have sleep apnea! We sisters don't want to do anything without sharing!

God grand me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and change the things I cannot accept and the wisdom to know one from the other.

It is not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells at the end of your life how you have lived.

Taz, do you have a full face mask? Also, are you having trouble with the seal? If it leaks, you won't get the proper pressure. How are you doing?

Hi everybody! My apologizes for not being here as much as I should be. I've been so busy with home and work and church it's been hard to be here as much as I would like. I want to welcome all the new people. I know Sleep Apnea is no fun, but CPAP works when it's adjusted corerctly and has improved my life totally. I hope that you'll visit the information that's been posted if you have any questions regarding OSA. I did a lot of research when I found out I had it only because I had never heard of it although, looking back, I think I've had it all my life. Hope you are enjoying your summer.
