Hi, Im Vee. I find that volunteering can be a rewarding and inspirational experience. I do a lot of volunteering through my church with the homeless and shut-ins. emoticon

I love to volunteer wherever my community needs me. Right now, I'm helping out at a nonprofit secondhand store(all money earned in the store go to missionaries), at our Senior Center's library (all money earned through our daily book sale and monthly half off book sales go to purchase children's books at our public library), at our new public library's genealogy room (I help people find their family's roots), at a local grade school (I teach poetry and creative writing to 4th and 5th graders), at our local hospital( help out where needed) and at church. I also dearly love to help out 4 shutin elderly ladies who don't drive. Volunteering fills my days and i get back much more than I put into it.

Daily reminder: count my blessings, state my affirmations, walk with Jesus, think positive thoughts, help others, and spoil my grandkids.

I used to help in a lot of different ways through a volunteer group I belong to, Women of Today, however just got married last June and had a baby in March so I have been lacking in my volunteer efforts. I hope to get back into it now though.

I also volunteer with the local Relay for Life which has been an amazing journey over the last few years.

Hey guys, I'm Leslie. I volunteer at a local hospital in the E.R every week. I'm a pre-nursing student, so it's good to get some exposure to the field! I've always done some type of volunteer work...one of my favorites was doing Big Brothers Big Sisters. Also, my mom and I like to help the homeless whenever we can. I really want to start volunteering at a homeless shelter in Austin, but I'm not too sure where to start!

Hi! I'm Brooke. I'm a volunteer Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I spend 3-5 hours weekly/biweekly/whenever I can with a 10 year old girl. We've been matched for 1 and 1/2 years! It's a lot of fun.

Hi I'm Rucifey (or Heather - either is fine). I live in Central California with my husband, our 5 cats, puppy and 2 tanks of fish.

The puppy (Laura-Glue) is a recent addition and is our second time as "Foster Failures". emoticon She was our foster pup - but now we're her forever family and she is my current work out buddy. Usually we go for walks in parks and around the neighborhood, but lately it's just been potty walks around our new apartment complex as I unpack.

We volunteer for a couple of local shelters and I recently started writing articles for examiner.com as our areas Pet Rescue Examiner. In addition to animal rescue, we also form a team every year for our local Komen Race for the Cure (we're the Pink Paw Prints). A few years back I was training to run the 5k for the Race, in addition to walking it, but the Central Valley's hot summers ended that training as soon as we hit June. In our new complex there's a fitness room with a treadmill so maybe I can try again this year.

So that's a little bit about me. Looking forward to getting to know you all better emoticon

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon Hi, my name is Debbie and I am 52 yrs. old, disabled, married and mother of 3, grandmother of 4., and I am from Lancaster, Ohio

Volunteer work is a new venture for me. Last year I joined a lady in our community and we together loom knitted over 300 hats to donate to Columbus Nationwide Hospital and our local outreach agencies.

I am excited that beginning 2011 I will be training to work with our local FairHope Hospice, not only at their hospice house but visiting shut ins in our community.

This opportunity is an honor and I will begin training the end of January.

Hospice helped me 4 yrs. ago to care for my mother in law. I will never forget the support and encouragement I received to enable me to honor her wishes to die at home. Now I will be able to give back and am glad my health has improved enough to allow me this opportunity.

Presently I help through a community website in which members give away gently used items they no longer need to those that are in need and it also keeps things out of our landfills, and I have been active for well over 4 yrs. now. I have a few families within our community that I help with clothing and food when I can.

Thank you for allowing me to share.

Hi :)

I'm 25 years old, and I live and work in Guatemala. My residence is in Michigan, USA, however. I spend my time at a home for boys who have been removed from their families primarily due to abusive living situations. We currently have 55 boys between the ages of 2 and 15. I mostly do administrative work at the home; although, I do interact with the boys some as well. (If you want me to just gush and gush about what I do, feel free to send me a message. I get pretty excited about it and I'm used to people not getting it.)

I have about 20 pounds I could lose; however, my primary interest is a healthier lifestyle. I was quite active in high school, and then I became pretty sedentary after that. I've lost the weight a few times, but I have a problem keeping it there. While the extra pounds don't bother me too much, the creeping back up does. I don't want to wake up one day and realize that it crept all the way over 200!

Hello all. I am a volunteer with many, many organizations. I am the secretary of Consumer and Family Advocacy Council, ADAMH Franklin County volunteer, CIT training panellist at the police academy, Ohio Historical Society multi department volunteer I can be assigned any where from museum to Ohio Village to special projects. I do it all! I also volunteer at Comfest, Good Neighbors Picnic, Medical Reserve Corps, NAMI walks, Autism Speaks walk and Life Care Alliance. I'm sure there are more that I have done this year but can't remember at the moment.
Past volunteering included working alot with homeless on the street at soup kitchens and in shelters. Social workers can't meet all their needs of all their clients some don't even have social workers.
I also went to Mississippi and New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. It was a life changing experience.

The journey is the reward. Chinese proverb

Greetings!

My name is Denise, and I live in southern Wisconsin. Right now, I have one volunteer commitment - I help out once a week at a local hospice, helping with filing and other organizational duties.

I've been tempted to scout out more physical volunteer opportunities, so I'm wondering if maybe I can find a good idea or two here :)

I look forward to getting to know y'all!

Hi! I volunteer with two organizations. I'm a tutor at an organization that works on adult literacy and I archive old files for another organization that helps homeless people get back on their feet again. Each job helps put my own problems in perspective.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the team and have only been with spark people for 1 1/2 wks. I and 46 and had worked in nursing homes from the age of 15 till 3 years ago when I quit to help my husband in our own business. I volunteer at the local nursing home I last worked at. I feel that is where I belong - helping the elderly. I never felt like I fit in anywhere until I worked there and actually was disappointed to give it up. I still visit when I can and help out with their activities.

Hello, my name is Melody Trevelino. I recently decided to do something I have never done before. I signed up to walk/run a half-marathon while raising funds for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The catch is that I will not be able to participate in the event unless I raise at least $1800.00 in donations. For every $1.00 donated, $0.75 goes toward the cause. The other $0.25 is used to pay for my trainers, coaches, team shirt, and entry into the race. Please support me in my efforts by making a donation to my fundraising campaign.

Use the link below to donate online quickly and securely plus learn more about my progress. You will receive a confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation.

http://pages.teamintraining.org/sun/StPe

Each donation helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. More than 823,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. I am hoping that my participation in Team In Training will help bring them hope and support.

Thank you

Hey, my name is Tess and I love to volunteer. I first got hooked into volunteering in high school when I joined the Key Club (a branch of Kiwanis) and after being the President for a year, I moved on to University to join the Rotoract club and create a society for leaders that promotes volunteerism in scholarship recipients.
I'm trying to lose weight so that I am healty enough to continue volunteering when I am old :) It is a great motivator.

Welcome to the team, KATHLEENAT! Have you thought about working for a hospice organization? For example, we have a residence where volunteers can offer time doing things like cooking for the residents or making favors for them. I've even helped in one of the hospice corporate offices, doing paperwork and helping where I can.

I hope you can find a fitting place to volunteer! It's so thoughtful of you to be so willing to donate your time!

I'm 61, former special ed teacher, on disability, but am looking for something that fits with me. I tried working at my grandkids library and driving local residents to doctor/dentist. Both were ok, but not something I REALLY liked. I'm thinking of working at a food bank. I'd like to do something at a hospital but I'm immuno suppressed and I don't think being around a lot of sick people would work out. I like being around people and being home alone wants me to have some socialization with a volunteer position. So I'm open to suggestions. In the meantime, I will look around the posts and see if there is something that catches my eye. Thanks for all that you do.

Hi,
I am 51 and staying at home a lot right now, recovering from a health crisis. I have 4 young adult children and 2 grandchildren. My main area of volunteer work is Girl Guides (Canadian version of Girl Scouts). I work with a group of 5 and 6 year olds and also have a volunteer job on our area council doing product marketing.. That means I am the Girl Guide Cookie Lady. I usually seem to be involved in a few other volunteer activities and they happen my way. This year my oldest is employed by Diabetes Canada working on the residential campaign and I have found myself volunteering to help with materials and the kick off party. I expect to also be helping with the stroke recovery Canada location near me eventually.

I forgot to mention that I belong to the RSVP~Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Although you technically should be 55 to join, I believe I was 45 when I joined. Sometimes you will get a call to see if you can help out by answering telephones at a church or the information booth downtown or the airport. They treat you to a nice luncheon with door prizes in the summer~really nice!

Hi to everyone! I started doing volunteer work at my church 10 years ago when I had to quit my job at the IRS and go on disability for a medical problem. With all that extra time on my hands I wanted to do something that would give back to the community. I volunteer at our church thrift shop which is only open two days out of the month. It is fun to watch the people anticipate when we will open our doors!it's like that Mervyn's commercial...OPEN, OPEN, OPEN! We have the best prices in town~no kidding! It is fun to see the regular customers each month and get to know them by their names. I'm also on a Special Friends team at church where we visit, call and send letters to those who are sick or can no longer come to church. Sometimes those people are the ones that are forgotten by family and friends. All in all, life is good and helping others gives me a feeling that I am still a productive member of society even if I no longer can work at a job.

Hi Everyone!
I'm Sara, a university student who loves to volunteer and wants to keep being able to do the more physical work (Habitat for Humanity is my favorite!). I'm hoping SP will help me stay in shape and loose the pounds I've gained since coming to school, and I love that there is this community for volunteers to support each other!

Welcome aboard! You will be so glad you started making healthy life choices now while you are young. You have already made some real commitments to helping other people. Remember that unless you take care of yourself, you won't be able to help others.

Hello everyone! My name is Lauren, I'm 19, and I just joined SP 2 days ago! I'm excited to get healthy with such a supportive community!

As for volunteering, for the past 3 years I have gone into downtown St. Louis with my church to serve the homeless in the area. It's a pretty unique and growing ministry and I love it! I transferred to a college back home because I had missed this too much while I was away. If you want to know more, let me know! I love to talk about it!

I've also been on multiple mission trips.
Mexico- to build a house
Puerto Rico- outreach and to help a local church
Belle Glade, FL (x3)- it's so special, i'll tell you about it if you want, but it's too long for just an intro. :-)
Moscow, Russia- teaching English
New Orleans- hurricane relief

That's the basics, I am so excited this group exists! As you can see, helping others is a burning passion of mine, so I can't wait to get to know everyone and share ideas for our various causes and support our goal for a healthier life! What a neat combination!

I'm MK (aka Mousekitty). I'm a 26 year old woman who wants to help change the world!

I was involved in one main volunteer activity when I was in high school. It was called Teen Court (or Youth Court). It focused on intervention of youths to prevent them from become repeat juvenile offenders.

Now, I'm working with the Eagle Ridge Institute, through Americorp VISTA. I'll be focusing on growing programs that help fight poverty and it's effects.

I'm excited to be here and look forward to hearing from others!

Hello,
My name is Kelly. I'm almost 46 and have a 7 year old. I got a late start so didn't want to miss out on her growing up and then she needs some extra help with school work due to a language delay. Anyway, I started volunteering at the school. I've been on the PTA board for 2 years now as the Volunteer Coordinator and the Presdident.
I am always involved at church too, but that is just life. I don't really think of it as volunteering.

My body is getting healthier everyday!

Welcome to other newbies, and I'm Wilma. You can call me by my real name or by any variation of my screenname.

I volunteer currently as a receptionist at the Monterey County AIDS Project. Previously, I've volunteered at libraries and in trail maintenance. Also, I've volunteered at the Western Workers Association, which helps non-unionized laborers obtain services and various other causes related to labor practices and low income issues.

Hello Helpers, I new member here. I primarily work with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and a local organization that creates living and employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. I also help with a lot of fundraisers for various groups and mentor high school kids ... I would like to get involved with an animal shelter or a canine rescue group in 2009, once I get through with some of my current volunteer cycles.

Natty,
You are oh so right. If I had lost weight earlier I believe I would not have gotten this darn diabetes. I want to take care of myself so I can help others. It's very sweet to be able to do both things at once!

This is wonderful! I'm Natalia. I love to volunteer both on my own and with my service frat Alpha Phi Omega. I love helping and taking care of people but I've realized now that I also have to take care of myself a little too.

Welcome b2b!
Your work sounds very rewarding. Isn't fun to have work where your children can be involved too. I guess if you ran a 5k you must be doing a lot of things right. I just watched the inspiring finish to the woman's Boston marathon yesterday and realized I would definitely have to pick a shorter race/walk if I were ever to participate in such an event. Good for you to have your physical goals included in your volunteer work. way to go !

Hi everyone, I am new here. I like to volunteer through things with my church. I volunteered for a high school youth mission trip last summer. This was so inspiring, I was asked to be a youth leader this year by our youth pastor. So I am doing that now. We are going on a mission trip this summer to inner city Chicago. I also help support a local nonprofit group that raises money for a S. Africa mission. The group was started locallly by a man from there and several churches plus the community are very involved in supporting it. We just finished a 5K and 10K event last weekend. The participation was a record. They had 1200 runners. The goal was 1000. All this was profit because they had enough sponsors to cover the cost of the run. It was awesome. I actually ran the 5K this year and did some volunteering. The group just went over in March to take medical supplies. My daughter gathered a huge part of these for her school project. It was awesome. We get a lot of feedback from there so it seems so much more persoanl.
I also have worked with a group called Youthfront once this year. Our church goal is to connect in with the community better to meet needs. I am enjoying this.
I look forward to learning more about what others are doing here. I love the idea of losing and helping. What could be more rewarding?

Thanks for the kind words and the support; it's always good to know people care. I am sorry to hear you had the same unfortunate experience. Indeed it is hard to know what to say and I am not always sure of how to talk about it myself. But I think everything happens for a reason so I'm trying to do good things with my life to pick up and move on. Anyway I appreciate your reply and thanks again for adding me as a friend!

Dear XCSarah,
So sorry to hear of your tragice loss. I can hardly imagine where you have found the strength to go on. I lost one at 4 and half months and it was probably 4 and a half years before I figures out how sad I was about it. I found people did not know what to say and so mostly said nothing. I hope you have someone nearby who can support you should grief decide to hijack you. I'm putting you on my friends list and you can do the same. There be at least one person who will respond to you no matter what! Good luck with your weight loss. Just don't give up, you can do it!

Hi everyone,

I've been a member for a couple of weeks now but totally forgot to introduce myself! I'm Sarah, a 20 year old living in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I'm hoping to lose about 25 pounds, most of which is pregnancy weight (sadly, lost the baby) that is stubborn and won't go away.

My volunteer work is mostly to do with sustainable agriculture and animal rights. I volunteer on a local organic farm that also rescues animals. I also do occasional work with the Sierra Club and work with a group called Compassionate Action for Animals when I am back in Minnesota (my parents still live in MN, I recently moved out here to MI). Since I just moved here I haven't gotten involved in a lot of things yet except the farm work which I do every weekend.

Because you are alive, anything is possible.

I've been away having fun so your reminder to stay focus is right on! I gained about 5 pounds and had old habits come back but now I'm back in myh program. I also had a really good meeting for the support group I am running so that was rewarding. FOCUS!!!!

Don't kick yourself too hard. I didn't make it. Life happened. We had ants in our kitchen, so I spent the day cleaning out everything in my kitchen. The good thing is that I did work up a sweat! I worked hard so I must have lost caleries?
Now that the week has started, I'm finding it hard to fit in everything I need to do. I'll keep trying, you do the same. Let's see how the week goes. STAY FOCUSED!!!!!!!! emoticon

Now, why is ready to kick my butt? I haven't been out walking yet today. Very hot here. I feel like I need to take care of myself before I take care of others. Learned the hard way. Nice to know somwone is here.

Hi, I'm CC checking in here because I have volunteered ever since I had my children doing many things for the elderly. I am interested to learn what others are doing and why they do it.
For you Weavcats, I have faced down some mental demons which were obstructing my weight loss success. I can talk myself into anything it seems. Very easy to find an excuse to not exercise. Just because I found the excuse doesn't mean I have to use it. Sometimes I can get a good laugh at my mental deceptions.
Now I know, when I exercise, I feel better AND I'm less tired. Go on a do it now streak and see what you can get done.
Good luck

You are so right! Thanks for you all being there. My best times are early morning,I could get my exercises done then. Why don't I do it? I don't understand my attitude. I'm tired, think I'll do it later, but later never comes. Have anybody felt the way I do when they were starting? emoticon

Hang in there. It is a life experience done one day at a time with the encouragement of the team. There are ups and downs at the scale but we get there.

My husband and I volunteer with the CHIP Child Identification Program (ILCHIP) (Illinois). We go to events and help get the fingerprints, DNA sample (swab of mouth), and still picture and 45 second video of the child. All is assembled in a package and given to the parent(s) to take home in case it is needed. Absolutely nothing is kept by us but a consent slip saying the parent allows us to to this for them. It is exhausting after one of these events but very rewarding. My husband got a big hug from one of the special needs children we did at a special event. Made it all worth while.

We also participated in a picnic event for a Christian children's home. We do events where we are asked.

Keeps us busy as we are retired.
