Hi Team

I was recently told by my doctor that I was slightly on the high side and if I loose weight it should come down. Do to family history of high cholesterol my doctor put me on pills which I am having a reaction to. I wake up with a swollen face in the morning. My husband is also on cholesterol pills as well as well as he has polymyalgia. We were told to get off of processed foods, potatoes, enriched flour and eat more brown rice, fruits and vegetables. Since starting in January he is down 15 pounds and had a excellent lab report the best he has had in two years. I am down 20 pounds and have not seen him yet to know how I am doing.

May this be the turning point in your life. Each day opens like a door letting us see the wonders of life. It is up to you to embrace all that is given. Do not regret the wasted moments of the past embrace the future and move forward.

Hi everyone...I recently had a cholesterol screening done and learned that I'm on the high side. This is the first time that I can say that my weight gain is causing an issue with my health. I'm not obese, but I am considered overweight according to SP's weight chart. I've used SP in the past to lose weight and get healthy, and had been successful. However, a bout with pneumonia last fall (1 year ago on October 3rd) brought me to my knees and I haven't gone back to where I was last summer. My goals is to bring down my cholesterol numbers, become more fit and lose the excess weight that I gained this past year. I want my stamina and energy back too. Am I asking for too much? emoticon

Hi team! I had a recent physical, and my doctor said that I have high cholesterol. I used to have high cholesterol (good cholesterol), but now I had put on some weight, and now the bad cholesterol is a little high. The doctor told me to go on a diet, and to exercise more. That is one reason why I joined Sparkpeople, because my weight was starting to cause me some minor health problems, and I do not want anything serious or major happening to me before I catch on I cannot overeat anymore. Also, I was recently hospitalized for two days with diverticulitis. The doctor in the hospital said, that I do not need to have any dietary restrictions, (thank God!), but I just need to make some diet changes, and to lose weight. That is the main reason why I am finally here.

I'm new and I struggle with depression and anxiety. I also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. One thing I was wondering is if anyone knows how to work in your target heart rate range when your taking a Beta Blocker. I've read that Beta Blockers alter your heart beat and it effects your heart rate. But I don't know what to do about it - do I try to use some other form to measure progress or what?

Never mistake failure as final

They call it a diet, but it's really my life.

Deciding what you want your life to be like is not hard. Deciding what you are willing to do and give up to get it, is the hard part.

I will do what I need to do in order to do what I want to do.

What you do and say is a reflection of who you are, so decide who you want to be and do it.

Welcome to the team. I've heard that niacin as a chol lowering supplement has fallen out of favor, i.e. there is evidence that it does not work to lower chol. It cannot hurt to take however as it is just a B vitamin.

Hello, everyone. I'm here because I have five months to get my cholesterol down or go on medication (doctor's suggestion). I do not want to take medication for my high cholesterol. Aside from being one year older and I have changed nothing, my cholesterol went up 40 points in a year. I'm hitting diet and exercise pretty hard, plus cholesterol lowering supplements: flax seed, omega 3s, grapefruit pectin. Haven't gotten the nerve to try the niacin yet. Any tips and suggestions are welcomed!

Welcome new comers. Spark is a great place for inspiration and camaraderie. I am currently waiting to get my cholesterol results back from blood work taken earlier this week. Overall I'm doing quite well on food intake and exercise. I've doubled my efforts for exercise and tracking and I have lost 20 lb since the beginning of March. Feeling better too. I'm about to head north for the summer where I will not have my treadmill and pool in the backyard so I'll need a new exercise plan, but I guess mixing it up is good so we shall see,

Hi, new to the team! Found out today that I have high cholesterol and have been put on Zocor. I am not very good at diets and could really use some help kicking my butt into gear! I have a family history of heart disease - dad died at 44 of a heart attack. I am only 35 and in otherwise good health (other than being overweight). I am looking forward to making some new friends and getting healthy!

Hello everyone,

I have a slow cooker breakfast recipe that tastes good to me. it's called "whoa oatmeal". you put 1 cup oatmeal and 2 cups water into the crock pot. then add cut up apples, cinnamon, nuts, raisins. let cook on low 8 hours overnight. you have DELICIOUS oatmeal in the morning.

Welcome to the team. It is a pretty active team in terms of using the team goals and nutritional and fitness trackers but kind of quiet on the message boards. I guess it is good that we are all out there exercising and sparking along. If someone has a specific question or comment, generally the team does spark into action with replies.

Hello, New to this team but not SP. I just got put on simvastatin a little less than a month ago by my endocrinologist after fighting it for a year or so. The possible side effects scare me (muscle aches and pains are one). I am already on enough prescriptions, I really don't want to be on this one too. however, I am willing to try it for a few months, to get my dr off my back.

Hello. I need to lower my LDL. I am 6 months overdue for an appt. After my dad leaves I'm going to schedule one. Anyway. I was supposed to try and exercise and eat better. Not doing so great on the exercise. I'll need to get my liver enzymes checked again too because the doctor won't put me on meds with the high enzyme levels. Which is fine with me. Hopefully it has gone down a lot when I do get the labwork done. Both the LDL and liver enzymes :)

Who shares their meal tracker on their page? I am interested to see what others are eating to get their numbers down.

Hey Gail!!

Heck if you can exercise and raise your HDL's and lose weight and control your diet and control your lipids like I need to do. Then you will not have to even see if you can handle lipitor. I had muscle pains and anxiety with it. Others have had worse side effects and Zetia has awful side effects reporte too. I know a good percentage of folks can tolerate lipitor but if you are like me this is a really good place to start and we will all get ourselves under control!!

YOU CAN DO IT!

Good morning. New to the group. Dr. says I have to lower the bad cholesterol numbers or go on Lipitor.

Pleased to report a 3 pound total loss as of this morning! This is my 17th day in SP.
I appreciate the SPARK recipes with the nutrition info already filled in.

Main interest for joining this group is for cholesterol lowering ideas. I used to have shrimp for appetizers. But discovered they are way high in cholesterol.

1. Anyone have ideas on healthy appetizers (not too difficult to prepare?)

2. Also does eating oatmeal every day really help?

Keep up the good work everyone. Weekend coming up, keep warm!

Welcome to the group Cindy. Sounds like you are off to a good start. SP is a great help. I'll be getting my lipid panel done at the end of the month so I'm hoping that comes out well. This is not the most talkative group but it is active in using Spark and we are often leaders in spark points for our category so the people here are good to talk to and get ideas from.

Hello!!

I live in Northern California and have just had cholesterol problems come up over the last couple years. I have tried Lipitor with no luck at all. Body aches, anxiety, and it just did not work for me. Then I had the stress of an ailing elderly mother and her passing Nov. 22, 2010. So I comfort ate. Now I have two weeks back to eating properly and exercising and my HDls and triglycerides are good but my LDL's and Cholesterol are both up. Damn. OK, so talked to my Dr. and she will give me three months to continue what I am doing and then recheck. I also do 1 gm of Niacin plus 1200 Omega 3 fish oil capsule daily.

I am down 6 pounds since starting with SparkPeople on Jan 3rd. I would love support with also lowering my cholesterol.

Welcome all new members. I was away in Vermont for the summer with limited internet access. I also kind of fell off the wagon for exercise but still did OK regarding food choices. Anyway I'm back to sparking and trying to get it down, both the cholesterol and the weight.

Hi Ellen,

I've only recently learned of small LDL myself. Apparently as the technology gets better, the ability to distinguish between large and small LDL is now possible, although it is not a routine test in lipid profiles. I'd be curious to know what the unit is measure is on your "smalls" and if there was a reference value listed. From what I understand, increased intake of sugar and processed carbohydrates can trigger production of small LDL. Let us know what you come up with in your reading and research.

Just "shopping" teams on SPARK and saw yours...I am on a quest to improve my cholesterol numbers and have made some good progress over the past 3 or 4 months.

My total chol was 265 with LDL of 204 and HDL of 50. Just had my bloodwork done again and total chol is now 201 with LDL of 142 and HDL of 49.

Good progress, however my Doc says that she does not care so much about the total cholesterol # she cares about the HDL and "smalls". My smalls went from 1221 to 805 - to be honest, I need to read more about that.

I am just realizing though, that my HDL only went down one point. So, I need to see what I can do to bring that up more.

I read something recently that talked about cardio helping that...and I am not a very good exerciser...so I may have my solution!

It can be done without the lipitors and such - and that is something that I really wanted to avoid because there are side effect. I was a skeptic at the beginning.

Have a great weekend.

Ellen

Hi All,
I not long joined the team but found out last week that my cholesterol is under the recommended levels after it being at high levels (to my knowledge) for the last couple of years. I got mine tested every year for the past three years and used the result as a measure of how successful my new eating habits where working.
I wish all luck in lowering your levels also.

Hello all, I am new to SP and to this team. I just had labs done and my chol was 266, HDL 57, LDL 189 and Trig 98. I guess that motivated me to take action. I am having them retested in 6 months and want to see some improvement! I have joined SP, added flaxseed and more fiber to my diet as well as walking for an hour 5 days a week.

Welcome to the team! Glad to see team members sharing ideas and tips. The team challenges are set up according to the suggested guidelines for getting cholesterol down, specifically low intake of saturated fat, no trans fat, limit intake of dietary cholesterol to less than 250 mg / day and get about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day.

I have been doing this for the last month and a half when I had my lab numbers done and found my total chol up, LDL up and trigs up. I'm due to get the tests done again at the end of Dec so I'm looking for better labs then too.

Sounds good to me. I did have a piece of brownie today. I usually go back for seconds and didn't. We are celebrating the last day of our student teachers, but I have already planned my supper. We are going out to dinner at Hosses Steak house. I usually get the salad bar. I know what is good and bad. I plan to completely ignore the desert bar.

I am right there with you. Food has always been my comfort. I started after I got married. At first I ate to keep up with my husband. We used to work 3-11 then share a pizza or something like that then go to bed. I also had some infertility issues so food became my comfort. As my children grew we went through a great deal of issues with my daughter, depression, suicide attempts, cutting, and on and on. Thus food was there again. I have managed to go from 150 to 291 in 27 years. I have tried many things, but I always slip back to my old ways. My daughter is getting married in Oct and my goal is to take off at least 50 pounds by then. I'm sure the levels will go down too

I feel your pain. I love to cook and love foods (and I am Southern so you know I like my fried foods and real butter). Yet I know that it is a mindset. I haven't gotten there yet, but I am working on it one day at a time, just like an alcoholic. Mine is an addiction to food!

Hi everyone, I joined sparkpeople the end of October. In June of 2008 I had a cardiac cath done because I was having an irregular heart beat. They found an eighty percent blockage of my left descending coronary artery. I have always had good numbers when it came to cholesterol. The only risk factor that I had was being overweight. After the procedure I was put on Zocor to lower my cholesterol even more.It worked but It gave me such muscle and joint pain. The dosage was cut in half. I still had problems so they stopped it completely. My levels went up some so I was put back on. I am trying to not take the med so I have started fish oil, walk five days a week, and try to watch my diet, but some of the foods are my down fall. I was supposed to have my levels rechecked in Nov, but kinda forgot. I am somewhat afraid because I don't want to go back on meds. Any suggestions?

I have been religiously taking my fish oil and my garlic tablets. Have completely changed my diet, but have trouble with giving up the cheese.

I'm going to have my cholesterol numbers checked in December to see if there's any improvement. I haven't been doing so well lately. So I'm getting back on that wagon!

Welcome to the team Sue. We all help and encourage one another. Some of the Spark recipes are really good and you can add them directly to the nutrition tracker. I find adding flaxseed meal and flaxseed oil helps a lot, especially good for skin.

Hi everyone, my name is Sue and I am getting really close to that 60 age mark. I have high cholesterol and high triglycerides. I have started taking fish oil tablets and am working on my diet. I have celiac disease along with all this. Really gets complicated when you try to diet. I love to cook, so if anyone has recipes that would work well with my diet, let me know.

Hi Jennifer,

You are making the right choices about nutrition. I have found some good recipes here on SparkPeople. In fact to day I made the eggplant and blackbeans; it is low fat, high fiber and very yummy.

I also will be sending out email to all on this team with new challenges to that are specifically targeted at lowering cholesterol. Look for that e-mail tomorow.

Hi to all! I've been struggling with high cholesterol since I was a little girl and my father suffered a heart attack when he was only 40 years old. I know that I need to do everything I can to lower my cholesterol and get well and I'm working on it. I am going to be looking for some good slow cooker/crock pot recipes that are low in fat in cholesterol but are filling and tasty. Anyone with suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks so much and good luck to all here.

Cheryl,

The trigs are pretty high. Were you fasting when the blood was taken? That can make a big difference.

As far as the diet, I think your doctor kind of overdid it in the advice. Oats, in cheerios and oatmeal, is well known to help lower cholesterol. There is a lot of good advice about healthy diet here on SP. I suggest you look at some of the articles here for suggestions.

What I try to do is eat low fat (total fat less than 47 gm, Sat fat less than 8 gm and 0 trans fat) with protein mostly plant based. For breakfast I typically have a protein fruit smoothie, that I make from frozen fruit, rice protein powder, almond milk, ground flax seed and some non fat half and half. It tastes like a frappe and really holds off the hunger.

Hi, all. Just got the results in triglycerides 383, ldl up, hdl low. Referred by MD to eat less sugar, avoid potatoes, grains, rice, pasta and cereal. So what am I supposed to eat for breakfast? Also started on Lovastatin. Any comments on that?

Hi. My name is Caroline. I'm working on lowering my cholesterol using medication, exercise and dietary changes. I was recently diagnosed with PAD. I meet with my Dietitian for the first time on 9/1. I'm waiting to clarify my goals until I've met with her a couple times.

Hi WANABHEALTHY4!

I just found this site and thought I'd check it out! I know that I eat healthy... but my doctor wants to put me back on cholestrol medicine. It was 247 last week (I took myself off of Lipitor about mid-June or around the 1st of July). I told my doctor I wanted to see if I could get it lowered myself. I already take too many pills... I hate taking yet another one. I think my high cholestrol is just a heredity issue... but I'm doing all I can in these next 6 months to see if I can lower my 'bad' cholestrol! My good cholestrol is good, but my bad is bad! I just started making a checklist of the top 10 foods that help lower your bad cholestrol and I'm being sure to eat those daily. I also got a book from the library that has about 325 more foods that lower your bad chol... but I think I'll still with the first 10 to begin with. lol

Looking forward to getting to know you all better and of course, any advise, would be helpful. emoticon

Take care!
Beth
