Hello everyone, my name is Melanie and I started Sparkpeople YEARS ago but I didn't really stick with it. I hope to do better this time. I just recently moved to the area from South Carolina and have been here almost three weeks. I began my journey back into good health today and I am going to try to stick with it(I will say I have a slight motivation problem). I hope you all are doing well :)

emoticon Sarah and Nina..

There is a lot to explore on Spark People. When I first joined I focused on the food tracker and fitness tracker. It gave me lots of ideas of where I needed to improve. I also joined many teams and participated in many challenges.

Wishing you the best on your journey!

Hello everyone, my name is Nina! I'm a new implant here from West Virginia, my husband and I moved here last year after he lost his job in the coal mines. The move has been a life changing one for me, I've lost 50 pounds, started a new career, and got involved with a great ministry. Can't wait to meet everyone and be apart of your health journey!

The grass isn't greener on the other side it's greener where you water it!

HI Im Sarah. My husband and I moved to Raleigh about a year ago. Just like to workout, run and play soccer. I have had some injuries (ACL tear and sprained ankle) which has caused me to be inactive and gained some weigh. I am working towards getting back to running and hopefully get back to playing soccer soon so looking forward to meeting some people and maybe making some friends in the process.

Hi. I just moved to the Raleigh area from Vermont. I'm looking forward to making friends here, possibly some workout buddies, at a minimum some online accountability/encouragement friends. I look forward to getting to know you.

Tracey, Thanks! My daughter goes to Finley for after-school care and summer camp so I am def. going to check it out. They also have a 1/2 off sign-up fee until the end of this month. I think this is going to probably be the best solution given my situation. Hang in there with everything. I appreciated your "Tell Us About Yourself" post. Kimberly

Kim, the YMCA is awesome, lots of resources for families and care for kiddos! They also take into consideration your finances which helped me tremendously in affording a place to work out.

still reading the replies and seeing the familiar faces YAY!..and a "Hello" to all the new raleigh sparkers! I hope to catch up soon, thanks to everyone for putting this group back together...sparkpeople has always been a huge help and connecting with others in my community is awesome.

its rare that I have time to surf sparkpeople so I'm trying to fit as much in before I need to work.

I have 3 amazing teenagers and live off Lake Lynn. I used to regularly attend spark raleigh events and loved them. My bedtime interferes with alot of social things but I LOVE Hope Community singles events. I'm really trying to get out more with actual other people, testing out being an extrovert :) I could totally hide away with a book or be by myself or with my kids & furbabies. But I'm told that actual socializing is healthy.

I'm missing my 13 yr old german shepherd, he passed away a month ago this week, but I have two wild and crazy little dogs, a chi feist and a havanese puppy. I also have an immortal guinea pig, well I think he might be immortal, he's nine.

...did I mention how much I miss that dog? he not only protected me from my ex, he outlasted my failed marriage, he was by my side when my dad died and when every other family disaster occurred. He kept every secret my kids ever told him and was my second set of eyes on them for most of their childhood. He was my constant in a sea of change.

I love riding my bike on the greenways, I use to joke that I'm no Lance Armstrong, not so much of a joke anymore. I ride roads in a pinch..as in my car is broken down but honestly Raleigh roads-not the safest place for bikes IMHO, too many close calls.

I'm thinking of going back to school for nutrition and wellness sciences :)

I have celiac disease and a dairy allergy..oh and I'm also allergic to anything in the sunflower family, makes me swell up with hives. I am a freak taken down by one sunflower seed and macaroni and cheese is my kryptonite. But alas I'm winning the battle because I'm recreating over 100 recipes to be gluten and dairy free. I made icecream from a nippleless yet milked almond #forthewin...focusing on healthier remakes while I'm at it too. My facebook has most of my remakes :)

I ran my own business for 8 years and still work that in now that I'm working 4am logistics at Target. Long and very active days for sure!

I'm a member of the Finley YMCA and LOVE water jogging and anything to do with aquatics..love the Y!

I've been a member of sparkpeople since 2006, lost 100 pounds, went through some health struggles, huge family struggles, major work changes...ending with going from being a caregiver/disaster recovery specialist (my mother was a level 5 hoarder) to being a daughter of a parent in long term care. My mom is mentally ill on top of it all. So I am at the end point of realising there will be no cure, and I'm trying to take bits and pieces and heal..and grieve for what I always wanted for her...and for the fact that she never wanted it for herself..or me. It's a fine line between her mental illness and the behaviours that come with hoarding, so thank God for free counseling. Therapy ROCKS! the chaplains at Alliance medical ministry are awesome!

I used to blog all the time and these days I think I'm a bit scared of what I have to say, so I've kept my fingers still for most of the year LOL. I have to lose the pounds I've gained since moms last two strokes and the familygeddon that ensued afterwards. I'm rebuilding my life with most of my family permanently absent from my life.... and sadly that's a good thing considering the alternative of being the abuse scapegoat for 39 years.

so beyond weight loss I'm finding out more about who I am, what I want for my 3 kids and I, and what I won't compromise on in my life. In a way I'm glad I survived an abusive marriage because it gave me the strength and skills to get out of an abusive family...a little hint..seen how hoarders treat their family? Try being in a family of hoarders who see you as enemy #1 for saying "enough" and finally standing up for what's right.

and though I still have pounds to lose my hard work has paid off. My blood sugar, cholesterol (good and bad), blood pressure...all better than my docs, she was amazed at how good they've become. I lived with diabetes being held over my head or the fear that a heart or asthma attack would take me down. Whole different reality now and while I still struggle with some aspects of my health, I'm so happy for this change!

so with all the negative I am in fact slap happy to have peaceful days with my kids. I'm such a firm believer in keeping stress from sabotaging your health now. This year I am focusing on getting control of my finances, deeper into organization and living more life with much less stuff...and doing something everyday that will give me more time or a better life tomorrow. It's been a wild ride but my life is improved more than I couldve ever hoped.

PS-

Thanks so much for the information. I am hoping it will get a little easier to workout when the weather warms up some. I am going to try Zumba tomorrow at North Raleigh Gymnastics while my daughter is in dance. Now, if I can work time for 2 more workouts in. Of course, that will be easier than finding the motivation after a busy day at work. emoticon

Hey, Kimberly! You are right near my office! I know that there is a Fitness Connection at North Hills, and I think that they offer child care. But the easiest way to find others is to go to Google Maps, put in your location, and then do a "search nearby" for fitness. There are a ton of fitness centers in that area, so the tough part will be to narrow down to the ones that offer child care. I know that Planet Fitness and Curves do not, though.

Glad to have you on the team!!

Hello All,

My name is Kimberly and I read about SparkPeople in a magazine and thought it sounded like a wonderful community. I am basically new to Raleigh, a single working Mom and have put on some weight in the last year....oh I forgot to mention I am over 40 and since I hit 40 my metabolism has not been my friend. :) I am struggling with eating healthful foods since I really do not have a lot of time to cook. Finding time to workout is also a challenge since I do not have a family support system to watch my daughter when I workout AND she has a busy schedule after school as well. I am looking forward to reading tips and advice from others as well as sharing what has worked for me in the past. Does anyone know of any fitness centers in North Raleigh (27609) that have childcare? Thanks and I look forward to loosing with you! Kimberly

I am looking forward in meeting you all. It has not been easy for me to get out during this cold weather. Anything below 50 degrees is freezing to me. I have been caring for my mother for three years now and I just don't have the friends here like I had in FL. I don't even see family here as much. I think when you live in the Sunshine State, people tend to visit more..

Diane, I come from a family of ECU Pirates. My brother went there and met his wife there, I believe around the same time you were there. My Sister in law is also a teacher in the Southeast Part of Raleigh. My niece graduated from ECU Teacher's College a couple of years ago. They live in Garner and very active in the same church as Scotty.. My brother in law also graduated from there. My husband on the other had, is a Gator and played football in his earlier years. My son will be 23 years old Wednesday and my Sis son turned 23 today. Funny story behind that. We were in the same hospital, rooms right next to each other, 23 years ago here in Raleigh.

My husband and I married here in 1984 January 29th and we celebrated our 29th anniversary. I remember it was 72 degrees and the next day snowing...

MaryEllen, It is wonderful that you are getting to travel to so many wonderful places. I look forward in travel hopefully sometime soon.

Lynn, I am happy to hear that you have lots of support from family and friends during your recovery. I am looking forward in meeting you too later in the month or in March.

I am a newcomer to the Raleigh Team, but not new to Raleigh or to Spark People. I moved here in 1972 and graduated from Millbrook HS. I went to college in Atlanta, GA and moved back here. My first job was in Retail Management but soon after I married, worked in the Real Estate Market and Real Estate Mortgage Business. My husband and I moved to Tampa Bay back in 1992 and I just loved my new life. We lived in Safety Harbor right on the Bayside. So many Parks and Trails along the Bay. It is just so beautiful..
I stopped working last February because my mother's health started declining and really needs 24/7 Care. I was paying out more than I was making which did not make sense to me. It certainly is not an easy job- no breaks at all like at work.
Today I will be taking my mother to a low vision specialist for a fitting for low vision glasses. She is diabetic and lost her eyesight in the right eye 4 years ago. This is going to be a busy month for me so I think I may be able to attend some meetings in March.
Wishing everyone much success in reaching there goals.
Larry, thank you for getting the team back in action. From what I hear, this has always been a very active team and I look forward in being a part of this team.

Thank you MaryEllen, You're travel schedule is truly admirable and checking off those things on your bucket list is absolutely wonderful.
I am getting better by the day. Everything is heading in the right direction. Once this very cold weather passes I will be a bit more mobile, at least that's what the doctor says. So I am looking at the end of February and very much looking forward to meeting everyone face to face. I am just being really careful right now, so I don't get any kind of infection... that would not make me a happy camper at all.
And yes, my family and friends who have been helping me out the last 4 weeks are able to return to their normal lives of going to the symphony and concerts and being in large groups again. I sure love them for the sacrifices they have made to be able to stay in close to me, literally. The unguarded hugs are most healing and sought after. But with me out of the real danger zone right now, everyone can exhale.

Lynn,

What wonderful news! I know you are thrilled and your family must be as well!

I just got home from Savannah and St. Augustine yesterday so I am a bit out of the loop. I leave on Thursday for Patagonia and Antarctica! Really excited about that one. The tip tier of my bucket list will be filled with the completion of that one. I depart on the 7th and return on the 27th, so I'll have a lot of SP catching up to do on my return. Hopefully by my return you will be healthy enough to come to a face to face without a mask! Looking forward to that! Reading Diane's post maybe we can get the group as active as it once seemed to be.

Hi Folks,

I'm chiming in a little late with the introductions, but before I do, Larry the new logo is great! Thanks for doing what we needed to rejuvenate the Raleigh team!

I'm Diane, mother of two sons 25 and 28 years old, and married to Eddie for almost 32 years. I grew up 30 miles south of Raleigh and went to school 80 miles east. (Go Pirates!)

I've been SParking since April 2009 -- two months before my 50th birthday. At that time I was concerned about the 25 pounds I had gained since high school and college, and wasn't sure that I had the willpower to do what it would take to lose it. Because my mom had seesawed in weight, with 100 pound swings, my entire life, I knew that fad diets were no good. I also knew that when I did finally find a way to change, that it was going to have to be permanent. I never said that I was dieting because it seemed that when the "dieting" was over, it implied that I'd get to return to the way I had been eating. The Spark People program was the perfect fit -- I could work it into my busy life and it offered lifestyle changes and not "dieting." Because losing 25 pounds would make me rather thin, with a low-normal BMI, my goal was to lose 15. I reached that goal six months later and couldn't figure out how to stabilize without adding calories that I didn't feel like I needed, so the weight kept coming off until I did reach that high school weight three months later and stabilized immediately. I've stayed within a 5-pound range since January 2010 and feel that I've found a lifestyle that I can keep. Thank you Spark People!!!

I am currently extremely involved with a maintenance Spark Team within the huge BLC21 team. The BLC is a twelve-week challenge that runs 3 times a year (4-5 week breaks between each challenge). It requires a good bit of commitment, but that is what I've found helps me never lose sight of what I need to do to maintain this healthy lifestyle. I may mention the BLC from time to time because it is such a large part of my Spark life, but I know it definitely isn't for everyone. If you're ever interested, let me know and I'll be happy to share.

Carol, it's great to see you over here again. I think we "met" in our early days of Spark and I would love to one day meet you face-to-face. I live in north Raleigh near the intersection of Strickland and Creedmoor Roads and have lived in this area -- three different locations -- since I moved to Raleigh following graduation from ECU in 1981. My husband and I met at ECU on my first day of school in 1977 and have been together since then.

Educgrad, we chatted over here a few times when the team was active a couple of years ago. I am so sorry to hear of your son's death. I cannot even begin to conceive of what this past year must have been like for you.

Lynn, wishing you a speedy recovery! Great news!

Mary Ellen, your post had me laughing. I have learned to love to sweat, but totally relate to the comment about doing little of it while you were losing. I actually lost 10 pounds and then plateaued. Doing strength training (which didn't cause me to sweat much) was what broke the plateau and eventually, I discovered that I LOVE fitness classes of all kinds, including cardio dance and kickboxing.

I am a teacher. If there are people on the team who have flexible time in the summer, I'd love to meet at a greenway/park for a nice brisk walk. (I'm not into running, but if I could start running and not hurt my knees, I'd love to train for a 5K.)

Everyone else -- Demi, Sharon, others -- it is nice to meet you !

Wasn't sure where to post this, but wanted to tell you all the great news.
I know it's a horrible weather day and I hope that you are all safe and home
or where you will be for the night.
MY NEWS.... after my radiation treatment this morning my oncology surgeon
said the the remains of the tumor had shifted itself out of the nerve bundle and
it was time to take it out.... so the very simple surgery was done this morning
and I am home, recovering and doing well. I am sure when that part of my
body starts to wake up more the nice pain meds he gave me will be much needed
and appreciated. My blood counts are a low, but I was topped up with
some of Dad's blood and some antibiotics and extra fluid expanders.
I got him and my sister was cooking away in my kitchen, preparing some
good wholesome beef (for my iron and protein needs). And so I don't have
to cook and can enjoy watching the weather outside. I do love winter.
Especially when I am safe inside :) ....
it'll be a week before I get the pathology reports back but I am on the mend.
It's a time to heal. And heal I plan on doing right!

Please be so careful if you have to go out. Please be safe and wise
to stay warm and enjoy your weather related "time out" at home tonight everyone.

be authentically you...
it's journey, not a one day hike.

I joined SP June 11,2008. I met my SP goal in Jan. 2009 and lost 8 more pounds.I have been married for 17 years. I am originally from Pittsburgh,PA,but have been in Raleigh since Dec. 1994. I love to read and be outdoors. Unfortunately I have gained back most of my weight and had been trying go lose it again. haven't been on SP as much the past year as we lost our 13 year old son very suddenly Dec. 31,2011. 3 wks. shy of his 14th birthday. He was very active and we worked out together.rode bikes together .I really want to do a 5k I was supposed to do one last year as I had trained for it ,but didn't get to do it due to scheduling conflict.I have always wanted to do one,but didn't want to do it by myself..We do have 2 parakeets which we got about 7 months ago

(I am loving this thread, by the way! So good to get to read a little more about everyone than we usually think to talk about on the boards!)

Hi! I'm Sharon and I started running after I had my son at the age of 35. Moving to the Florida area, I invested in a jogging stroller and ran for hours along the Bay. I ran my first Race, The Gasparilla Classic Long Distance 15K and ever since got the Running Bug. I have met so many runners and at that time, mother's with children and jogging strollers. I ran my first Marathon, Gulf Beaches and did the best time ever. I was 9 minutes from qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I have a one time goal to run that, hopefully 2014.
I am so Happy that my friend told me about SparkPeople. All of the tools have really motivated me and kept me on track.
Keep on Sparking! It's my way of LIFE and I Love it!!

My name is Larry. I am a 37 year old divorced father of two. My daughter is 13 (ugh), my son is 11. I am an artist by heart and a consultant by trade. I work from my home near the PNC center. I have the best dog in the world. I plan to go back to school if I get in the design program at NC State (crossing my fingers). I find out the end of March. I have been big my whole life. My whole family is overweight. For the longest time I couldn't conceive of being thin. The idea of not having fat around my waist blows my mind. I don't even know what that will feel like.

In September I went to the emergency room with my fiancé and found out I have diabetes. No one in my family has ever had diabetes. The next week I struggled with high blood sugar until the medicine could start working. My fiancé left. She, "couldn't handle the stress". By the middle of October I realized my life was not going the way I wanted and no one was going to come to my rescue. Looking back there wasn't a magical moment that "woke me up" but today I am a different man. Spark people has changed everything for me. It always amazes me how powerful the most simple concepts can me. I have heard all the "take it one day at a time" stuff. I don't think I have truly understood the depth of it until SP. That's the spark in Spark People. Take big goals and break them down into small daily attainable goals. I can't say enough about the impact this site has had on my life. That's why I am willing to give back. If I gave all my time until I died it wouldn't repay the gift of health I have received. I was on my way to an early, slow death.

I have only been doing this for a couple months and I have gone from out of breath walking up my apartment stairs to walking 3 miles a day (I walked a good 8 mile this past weekend at the park. It was so nice I just kept going). I went from eating hot-pockets, bags of chips and Chinese takeout to cooking every-meal according to my diabetes menu plan (I love veggies now). I went from 700 blood sugar in the hospital to under 100 every day. Now I am teaching my children what I am learning. I cant help but spread this around. I tell everyone I meet about SP. I keep the "you've been sparked" cards in my wallet just in case. ;)

Hi All!
I joined Sparks the end of May 2012 and have found this place addictive ... I have never been successful in food and exercise tracking until I came here and now I don't miss an ounce of food I put in my mouth and track all my scheduled and accomplished workouts.
I am a 52 yo single woman who lives just on the edge of the belt line in Raleigh. We moved here when I was 8 and grew up near the NCSU campus, where my father was a professor for 40 years. I was part of the new "old" Raleigh when the city was safe enough to wander the streets at any of the hour of day and night. The neighborhood I grew up was full of young professors with children all in our age range, and we sort of ran as a pack. We still do. I left the city for about 25 years and lived in Durham/Chapel Hill area where I finished my education and worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner and a forensic psychologist.

As for my weight, I have battled it all my life, even when I was young and swam competitively for 14 years I was still overweight.
I am a member of the Wellness Center. Except for this little bit of time (Part of January and some of Feb) I am there 6 days a week to swim laps and do water aerobics. I do strength training 3 days a week and while I am not allowed in the gym right now, I am working with a physical therapist to keep my muscles moving. I will walk, though my knees don't like it very much. But it is the fall back exercise for me when being in a germ filled place is not an option.

I am an artist now, I work with clay and multimedia, it keeps me sane and productive.
I have a small studio in my apartment that I just got in order the end of 2012 and also work with some artist in a coop studio near downtown Raleigh, where we work on larger projects that many of us work on together.

Hi All!

I am Mary Ellen, an almost 65 yo divorced woman who came here from Southern California in 1999 after my divorce. I live in Holly Springs with my 2 cats, Sweetie and Copper. I joined SP in April 2010. I was getting ready to retire and I wanted to get to a decent weight for the next chapter of my life.

I have always been a traveler. My father was an airline employee his entire adult life, so travel was always available to me till I turned 21. When I got my job at American Airlines I knew I was in the right place!. I worked for American Airlines for 11 years and 3 days before I retired, so I have many friends who also love to travel and we do it as often as possible! Believe me, travel is so much easier when the only "extra" weight you are hauling around is your carry on bag! I lost as total of 60 pounds, 40 of them on SP, to get to my goal weight. I have held that weight, give or take a few pounds, since April of 2011, so almost 2 years. I was a very small child, often told "A good wind would have blown me away". At the age of three I had my tonsils out. My theory is that the surgery opened up my throat so more food could fit down it and I had been heavy ever since! So it was indeed a life long battle that SP helped me to win. My maintenance mantra is "Track, Track, Track" both food and exercise. Use as many SP opportunities as you can to learn about weight loss. Being a points junkie really helps with that!

I don't like to exercise, and did precious little of it while losing, but I have resigned myself to the fact that it is something I need to do so, like it or not, I do it. I do about 20-25 minutes of stretching exercises for my back every day. I do a Curves workout 4-6 times a week. I only run if someone is chasing me, and that hasn't happened in years! I will walk, but only if the weather is cool enough. I hate to sweat so remember that if we start meeting to walk! I actually have a little fan that I can hang around my neck if things get sticky! That removes quite a few excuses, doesn't it?! Anyway, if we do begin to meet in person, keep in mind that I still do travel so I might not make all of them, but I'll do my best to make most of them. I'm looking forward to more participation from and with our team.

Attitude is everything, pick a good one!

"It works if you work it, and it won't if you don't."

ONCE YOU GET THERE....DON'T GET COCKY,
IT'S EASY TO FALL RIGHT BACK DOWN.

Certainly I have a 6-pack. You just can't see it through my soft sided cooler!

Hi, I'm the Senior Member of the group who always tells others SP is the first successful program I have found in my 65 years of "dieting".
I started in spring of 2008, lost 50 lbs. in 14 months, have kept most of it off except for 8 or 9 lbs. gained when I had bones shattered in my foot and that kept me off my feet for most of one winter.
I have a terrible metabolism, always have had, and I do believe it is changed if you follow the advice of SP. I have never been thin and probably never will be and am actually at the weight recommended by LA Weight Loss. SP says 10 lbs. lower and I agree, but just can't get there.
SP has taught me it is most important to be healthy. I am very busy and active for my age getting between 60 and 120 min. exercise 5 or 6 days a week.
I like to say I do a "triathlon", well, it's a tri-something! I love my hour of water aerobics, 30 min. walking and 30 min. on recumbent bike. Don't always get all 3 done but they are my favorites - along with a little strength training.
I live in the country outside Wake Forest from mid-April to mid-October and the other 6 months in central FL.
Now, shall I tell you about my great husband of 58+ years, our wonderful offspring and super intelligent grandchildren??? emoticon emoticon emoticon

So, about me. I have been on SP since 2007, although I did take a break for a couple of years there. With SP's help, I lost all the way down to my goal weight, but gained a good bit of it back due to stress, bad news, life, etc. So I am back again, and it feels like home. :)

I feel like I know a good bit about fitness and nutrition, as well as the site itself, but I love being on here because it keeps me accountable if I have announced my goals. I also really enjoy it because it gives me the opportunity to cheer other people on and help them out, which is something I love as well.

I live in eastern Wake County, have a husband, two boys, and two cats. I have changed jobs recently, and am now a financial advisor, which is something that I have wanted to do for many years. Can't wait to hear more about the rest of you!!

Since it has been so long since this team has been active, let's take a few minutes to tell each other about ourselves. Please post and tell us about yourself, whether you have been on the team a long time, or you are brand new!

Let us know, generally, what part of the area you are in, where you are on the health journey, and a little about yourself!!
