I am a picky eater. I'd go into it, but it would take too long.

In the light of darkness I'll find my way
I've shed my sorrow, at least for today
I have never felt so strong
Life is rushing through my veins
With my heart and mind aligned
I can stand the test of time
I have never felt so proud
Of what I feel and who I am
When life brings me to my knees
Nothing will ever get me down

I'm not a picky eater but my fiance is.. I try to make meals with separate entrees or veggies but then we have so much food to eat and it's hard to keep up with portions. I have started to like different kinds of foods as of lately. How can I keep both of our stomachs happy without going crazy?

I'm not a picky eater but i have to be and my finace is. he still has the child like picky eater thing going on. anything that looks weird he won't eat and he's addicted to sugar. and i have to be a picky eat because i have stomach digestive problems (IBS) and i'm know i'm sensative to dairy and i think Gluten and MSG too. someday i will go to the doctor for that.

so now i have to figure out how to stay on a healthy diet while feeding a picky eater and being one. i've told him that one day i will change both our diets.

Hi my name is Charmaine. I like Charm for short. I have been a picky eater since a child. I'm not as picky as I used to be. I have digestive problems and have to be careful with what I'm eating. I am very cautious about trying new things but I'm starting to open my horizons. I'm glad there is a group to give me a few ideas.

Hello my name is Vanessa but everyone calls me by my middle name Nikita or Kit for short. For the last 12 years I have been taking care of my 77 year old Uncle who is a VERY picky eatter. He doesnt really like low fat, most veggies & other healthy foods. So I made what he wanted, but now with my health not doing so good & I did gain 50lbs when I gave up smoking last year. I want both of us to eat healthier. Maybe I can sneak in some healthy stuff. Any help would be wonderful.

Hi, my name is Jamie. I joined this group because sometimes the wieght loss gets tricky because I don't like the healthy stuff. I like red meat, I've learn to deal with some chicken and I don't like fish. I have the same couple vegetables and fruits that I eat. I've found in general if I try a new diet found I'm okay unless its an alrteration of something I've already eat.

HI everyone! I just joined this group as I am a picky eater. I have been all my life. I love to eat my veggies and fruits. I just have a limited selection that I like to eat. I do not care for my veggies cooked. I have been trying them but I love the sound of the crunch when they are raw. I have started adding different leafy veggies to my salad. My salad usually consists of romaine lettuce, arugla and sometimes spinach, carrots, celery, peppers, cucumbers, radishes and no dressing. I also add broccoli sometimes.

I don't like soups that much and if I do eat them I just eat the meat. I eat pork, lamb, beef, turkey, chicken. I don't like spicy food that much. I notice that if I eat spicy food it usually makes me retain water.

Oh my Name is Monica. I also don't eat seafood. The smell of the fish turns me off. I have tried scallops and it tasted good until I was able to taste a fishy taste. Then I couldn't finish it.

I think that is all for now.

Hello! This is my first day and my first message board post! I am a picky picky eater, and always have been. I do not like many veggies, and those that I do like are the carb-rich ones! I was always served an alternate dinner at home, and that is where part of my pickiness began! I am going to try hard to figure out how I can eat what I like, stay satisfied, and lose weight!

Hi everyone,

I've always been a picky eater. Actually I eat alot like Tasha does, only a bit worse. I have the biggest sweet tooth (something I'm working on now), my favorite foods tend to be heavy in carbs, and I don't like the things that are good for me (always hated eating lettuce). I would really like to talk myself into liking more of the things that I should be eating and less of the ones I shouldn't, but I have a feeling it's going to be a slow process.

Hi Tasha!
Welcome, you are definitely not alone!!!I know what you mean about people making special arrangements. I don't eat red meat, seafood, or chicken on a bone. I try to tell people not the plan their menus around me, I will bring my own food, but some people insist. It's almost embarrassing when they make a big deal out of it.

Hi all, my name is Tasha, and I have been picky all my life! I think a huge part of my weight is due to the foods I eat. I really eat like a child even though I am 27 years old, hah. Chicken nuggets, fries, burgers (plain), macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, pizza (pepperoni), etc. My ultimate weakness is bread. Biscuits, muffins, yeast rolls, french bread, donuts, cornbread, etc. I am a carb queen and I do not know how to stop it! I started eating salad (only caesar with croutons) about 1 year ago. Recently started eating yogurt. I have been more willing to try new things for about the past year or so but its extremely difficult for me. Like many of you have said, texture is a major biggie. If the texture is something different than what I'm used to, I refuse to eat it. I wish I could find healthy foods that I liked. The only "vegetables" I eat are corn or sweet peas. I eat more fruit than veggies.

Has anyone ever been able to overcome their pickiness? I absolutely hate it! I always feel like people have to make special arrangements because of my very small selection of edible foods. I also get tired of eating the same things all the time. It is nice to know that I am not alone though!

Welcome Sammikay1! What are your regulars? What is it about veggies that you don't like? For me, it's the texture if they are cooked. I've found that my selection is greater if they are raw. If you like iceberg lettuce, start adding some raw baby spinach into your salads. Stir-fries are also a great way to add a new veggie or two. I love doing stir-fries with peppers, onions, and broccoli. As for the baby food, I've never heard that before, but it's worth a try! Just be sure to check the nutrition label since babies have different health needs than adults.

Hello all! I'm new to SP and am definitely a picky eater. I eat as bad, if not worst, than a four year old. I'm trying to overcome my fears of trying new things. I'm so stuck on my regulars that anything outside of that realm is plain terrifying. Any advice as to how I can start to get into the habit of eating vegetables? Someone told me to start with baby food. Any advice is great!

Welcome Amy!

I see that your sodium is a problem(Mines horrid and i have never even tracked it i just know) but it's a common issue. And if your sodium is still high and your increasing your water intake that might explain the weight gain. I'm not 100% sure but if i remember correctly salt can cause a person to retain water so that might be whats going on with you, however as i'm not a deitician I'm not 100%. You've come to the right place though. I'm one of the leaders and looking for ways to make this team better. if you have any ideas just private message me or I'm always up for just talking if you want :)

Cindy and Vee:Its has nothing to do with age. I'm 25 and i know 4 year olds that don't hold a candle to me. your not alone in anyway!

Hi I'm Amy

I'm probably one of those most picky eaters as my mom always tells me, my whole family eats almost anything except me. I'm not fond of many veggies except I will eat a salad if just the lettuce with cheese, dressing, croutons. I found recently i love bananas, like watermelon, kiwi, pineapple, carrots. Those are some healthy choices I found out I do like. I used to love meat, but don't like much of that anymore, in a way it is good i don't like as much. I will eat tacos, but not much meat on it, venison sausage is good. I have pills for a medical condition taking for quite a few years and seems to make me more picky all the time. I need to try to lower sodium intake as I recently was tracking it and i'm way over suggested use so also joined that team to see if can get under 2,000 sodium each day. Need to figure out why I keep gaining so might be due to sodium as I don't eat junk food and no pop unless I go out now. I exercise all the time and since this past weekend I have started on an intense 60 day workout so far i'm still gaining weight so I feel must have something to do with the foods i'm eating. I also have recently started drinking water, at least 4 glasses per day as I rarely drank it before. I'm not a cooker so hard to stay totally healthy as most healthy things are with veggies. I do love to eating deviled eggs, easy to make for a good snack. I eat mostly salad, eggs, sometimes white rice or rice a roni, mac n' cheese, tomato soup, chili. I found tomato has too much sodium so hate to eat a lot and chili isn't best for me either. I love seafood though so i will go to store and buy the frozen crab or lobster. Good snack is popcorn i found if you pop it, not the bag ones.

So what do others eat on a daily basis that helps them lose weight?

Hi everyone!

My name is Cindy, and I'm a VERY picky eater. I've gotten a little better with age (I now eat condiments on my burgers...), but not much. I'm trying to learn to eat fish, but blech. A few months ago I found out I don't actually hate cauliflower. Baby steps..... But, I am entirely too old to eat like a 7 year old. I take that back. I know several children who eat better than I do! :-)

Hi everyone! Good Morning! I am Vee and I am a very picky eater! I hate veggies but I love fruits and I never eat veggies so I take the green stuff as there are no really good veggies I like, I like corn which I cant' eat well and I like cooked carrots but other than that and maybe squash thats frozen so I dont' have to be in the kitchen, as I hate to cook.

You would think at my age I would learn to eat proper, but no I hate veggies!

Hi! I'm Kate. I've been a picky eater my whole life. I hate cooked veggies, but will eat most raw. I don't eat red meat or anything on a bone and I don't like seafood. I have a sweet tooth that is never satisfied. It makes cooking healthy a challenge, but Spark Recipes and the Spark People cookbook have been a huge help.

Hello!

I have been a picky eater my entire life. I only eat two vegetables green beans and corn on the cob. I can't even eat just corn from the can because it tastes different to me. I don't count potatoes in with the vegetables either, lol. I try to eat new things, but it normally doesn't work out. I am trying my hardest to eat right, but since I am so picky, it makes it really hard to do so.

Hi I'm Nimma and boy am I a picky eater. My problem is if I do not like it (or even if I think I don't like it) I will not try it. I did not eat Chinese food or fresh tomatoes until I was 24 and to this day I have never eaten MAYO, ranch dressing, sour cream, cream cheese, cottage cheese and only Motz cheese on pizza. And I will only eat fish fried.
For some things it is a good hate but others not good at all.

I am getting better with veggies but that is about it.

I saw this on Marie's AZHURE SUNSOAR and COURTI's page and thought I needed to be here and maybe fix this problem.

Hi, my name is Samantha, and I am a picky eater. Let's see, a couple of things about me:

- I eat most fruits and vegetables.
- I hate seafood and pork.
- I don't like milk.
- I like salt! (Booo. Haha.)

That's probably about it.

Hi!

Brand new here, but I AM a picky eater! You would think that I would enjoy veggies as I got older but I just don't! So I'm here looking for a common ground and hoping to find different ways to add healthier things into my meals so that I WILL eat them!

Thank you for having me and I look forward to getting to know you all more!

emoticon NORACHARLES that your son has made such great progress and the honor roll it is amazing what schools can do now Scott used the computer to let us know what he wanted or needed as a very young child special machine he had I think that hindered his speech as he didn't need to talk but we all thought it was awesome he could communicate in his own way to us

Great that you & LMAC1968 have learned to get creative in planning your meals I hope to hear more of how you all handle family meals

I know the older I get my taste buds have changed I eat things I would never before and my mother who is in her 70's is eating things she never did before

mashed potatoes are out for us as well. Anything mushy! My son won't eat a banana either, but likes the flavor and will eat banana bread or muffins.

It is hard, but we keep trying new things and tell him that after a year, your taste buds change and you really have to try new things again and again.

LJR4HEALTH, it's crazy to think how much we've learned about autism in the last 30 years. My son had a significant speech delay and a lot of his speech was echolalic (the parroting thing); however, with speech therapy he made amazing progress. He's been in a mainstream classroom with some assistance since kindergarten. Now he's entering fifth grade, and he has been on the honor roll most of the last two school years.

C. is very sensitive to texture in food. He can't stand the grainy texture of ground beef, or the pasty texture of mashed potatoes. So I play around a lot with cooking things different ways--mashed potatoes are out, but oven fries are a go. I just try to keep it from being a power struggle, give him a multivitamin, and stay creative.

My cousin when he was a child had a high pain tolerance as well that is how he was diagnosed with Autism he went through a battery of test and that was the result but I'm not sure he is 100% as the doctors claimed Though Scott doesn't really talk he just parrots what he hears. Its amazing how many disorders are out there and have been for decades and we now find out these things and it answers a lot of questions in older people that grew up never getting the right help

yes - some days it seems he has issues with EVERYTHING!!! His clothing, his shoes, socks, the right kind of coat, gloves/mittens, sunlight, change in seasons, I could go on and on. We do home therapy and love summer because swimming is the best for him because the water encompasses his whole body. R is proprioceptive, which means he needs a lot of physical input. He also has a very high pain tolerance, so sometimes he does not even know he is hurt when he really is. He talks all the time and I mean ALL the time! I love him though, he is my miracle child. He was born 11 weeks early and we are blessed to have him!

Wow never heard of Sensory Processing Disorder before very interesting Does he have problems with other things besides foods with this disorder? Just read a little about it on the web Makes me think about my cousin in a different light

My youngest son has Sensory Processing Disorder and we have a real tough time with food. Texture is his biggest thing. And he likes hot and spicy. Loves hot sauce, mustard and vinegar. He does eat a lot of foods though, but slathers them with those three things usually.

Hi guys! I joined because my son is a very picky eater. He has autism, which makes him very sensitive to textures and flavors. I wanted to get some more ideas to gradually expand his diet and make trying new foods not such a big deal.

OMAHAMAMA...it is awesome that you are encouraging your family to change. That is one of the things that lit the fire under my butt...my boyfriend loves to eat (he likes to eat healthy too) not only was he sick of hearing me say 'eww' and make faces at things but he was also genuinely concerned for my health (and probably the fact that he knew someday my metabolism would slow down and my consumption of pizza/pasta/carbs+cheese would not waver). Sounds like your husband maybe has similar tastes at me...here is some stuff that I did to 'change'

1. whole wheat everything...it wasn't easy...'if it's white, it's right' used to pretty much be my motto about all foods. white pasta. white bread. white waffles. white cheese. white rice. you get the picture. with a really good sauce - it isn't too hard to 'get over it'. They do make whole wheat bread that they make white (probably for tricking kids/picky adults)

2. drinking almond milk (sounds like you've already substituted out some dairy) and dairy free ice cream/desert....I'm an ice cream junky. it is my Achilles heal. having something that is good enough to fulfill my craving, but doesn't taste enough like the real thing for me to want to crush the entire container of it works great!

3. baby carrots and celary sticks are a new staple. I was always able to eat them, but just didn't bother (why have that when I can have a block of cheese and some wheat thins)

4. I drink a protein shake everyday (I'm a vegetarian) but I think it is just a good nutritional supplement regardless

5. the eggplant parm. spark recipe is AWESOME! (you can access it through my favorites on my page...because I'm sure there are a bunch of them listed but this particular one is outrageously good)

Good luck and I think it is awesome that you want to help him/your daughter to change...don't force it (a big part of many picky eater's pickyness, myself especially, is deep rooted in feeling pressure during meal times/needing to control the eating environment) but all the encouragement you can give them is going to be helpful. If I try something but I don't like it my boyfriend is always ready to give me a pat on the back for AT LEAST trying it. and if I like it woohooO! PARTY!

All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough; they will say you're the wrong height or weight or the wrong type to play this or achieve this. They will tell you no, a thousand times, no, until all the no's become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. AND YOU WILL TELL THEM YES!

Hi, brand new tam member here. I am NOT a picky eater but I AM married to one and I have one picky daughter and one not so picky daughter. It is a constant challenge to eat healthy around people who say things like "Eew! Gross!" whenever I put a "new" food in front of them. My husband is surely on his way to diabetes or a heart attack with his all junk food diet. For most of our marriage I found it was easier to go along to get along rather than fight the good fight and insist on more healthy eating. But now that I've packed on at least 75 lbs from too much pizza, pasta, and meat, I've decided the only thing to do is make modified meals. So for all the picky eaters out there who've had to change their ways to fit a healthier lifestyle, I'd love to hear how you do it. For my part, I've been doing a lot of swaps - I take the food they all like and whatever is the most unhealthy ingredient, I try to modify it. Last night I made mock alfredo sauce by using refrigerated coconut milk in place of cream. I kept the regular noodles and only used cooking spray to sear boneless-skinless chicken breasts. Lots of garlic and a little Parmesan and it looked and tasted like the real deal. I try to keep them out of the kitchen so they are none the wiser and it must've worked because they ate it all up! Victory is mine!

Hi Linda,
Yes I only like a handful of veggies myself, corn, peas, cucumbers, lettuce, green beans...that is about my extent. I will eat carrots cooked and mushed up with something and I will eat a little bit of cabbage if cooked in with ham or something like that!! LOL...I am so fussy, it actually isn't even funny it is embarassing at times being so picky. I don't want to be and I try everything that is given to me, but I just have a terrible gag reflex, if I don't like it, it is not going down! I should try the more soup thingy, I can eat some soups with veggies in them, so that would be a way to get some more in. My husband and my son will eat most anything, so I watch them eating stuff and wish I could be more like that and eat whatever, it would certainly offer me much more of a variety to healthy living! Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hi, I am new to this team, although not new to Spark. I am a very picky eater, I don't like many vegetables at all, I do like fruit, but I don't like any salad dressings, seafood, fish, and the list goes on and on. I find it hard to lose weight because the things I do like are fatty or carbs and I get bored eating the same old stuff everyday, so I thought I would join this team to have some other picky eaters to chat with and to find people who understand, if I don't like it, I am not going to incorporate it into my everyday life and eat it daily!! LOL...
I struggle with being picky and trying to figure out what to eat. I look forward to sharing with this team and getting to know you all!!

The only way I do veggies for the most part is in soups I like beef but its red not good for you my protein is on low side as well I'm a carbaholic I have the opposite I like the fats as well.

I'd say do veggies in soup and in sauces you could blend them up as well chicken is very good for you Good luck

Hi. I have been a picky eater most of my life. At least in the past, I did eat a lot more foods than I do now. 8 months ago I got very sick, and without medical insurance, I had to diagnose myself. After trial and error, what made me better was to eat only natural/organic food and I had to cut out dairy.

Now I feel helpless because I don't like very many vegetables and also don't like most meat (I eat turkey and chicken). Does anyone have advice on what I should do? I've noticed I eat more carbs than anything else (about 60% of my food is carbs per day), and I struggle to get the minimum fat in my day (I can't even get 32 grams of fat). My protein is usually on the lower side (60-70 grams).

Please help!

Hey! I'm new to SP and needing to lose weight to be healthier and happy with my body! I have been working out but not eating a good diet due to my picky eating habits! I'm hoping to learn how to make veggies something I like rather than something I can't stand to put in my mouth and lose weight along the way!
