Hi Everyone! I am new to the group and looking to make some new Spark Friends.
I recently discovered I have herniated my L5/S1 disc. I'm learning to deal with that and am hopeful to do all I can to avoid the need for any procedures.

Would love to chat with anyone looking for encouragement.

Hello!! I've been with spark for a couple/few years and about 3 months ago I had a horse backing riding accident. I fractured C7 & L3, burst fracture of L3, spinous process fractures of T1-T7 (and broke 5 ribs and punctured my right lung). I spent 22 days in a neck brace and 74 days in a back brace, which I just got "released" from (permently off) last Wednesday. I start physical therapy on Monday. Thankfully I didn't lose the use of anything from my injuries, but now that the brace is off, I'm sore and a little scared. I need to ease back into physical activity and rebuild the muscles (primarily back and core) that I lost during my recovery.
Looking for a place where others have faced similar issues with their backs and can provide tips and support.

I'm Donna. I just moved from NC to WV a month ago. My husband and I will be married 3 years in October. I have 2 daughters (25 and 27) from a previous marriage.

I have multi-level degenerative disc disease and arthritis. I also have a labral tear and arthritis in my right hip. On May 7, I had surgery to repair a bulging disc (L2-3) and pinched femoral nerve. Recovery went well but, in the last few days, my lower back and right hip are starting to hurt again. I wore the back brace during the move and when doing any lifting. I'm hoping the pain is just from being much more active than I had been since mid-February when the back and hip issues first started and I had to use a walker to move around. I also know I have to lose weight to help my back and hip - plus the arthritis in my knees. I do NOT want to go through surgery again.

I'm looking to learn more about how to ease this back and hip pain without relying on pain meds and muscle relaxers. And I'm looking to learn more about the best exercises to lose weight and strengthen my back without hurting it further.

Hi - I found your team and hope this is a place I can call home. I have degenerative disc disease and lower back pain as well. Surgery is not an option for me at this time due to complications from anesthesia in my last 3 surgeries so P.T. and painkillers have been my "treatment". I try NOT to take narcotics so I use lots of heating pads, ibuprofen and just suffer through.

I know losing weight might help with my lower back pain though I don't think it will help with the problems in my C4 and C5. It's just hard to do when the pain is bad and food is that momentary comfort - ugh.

So I hope I can learn something from all of you and maybe I will be better off because of it. I live in North Central Tennessee on a farm, have a DH of 30 years and love the great outdoors.

Welcome Amy! My only suggestions are cold turkey it off the meds immediately and exercise as much as you can even if it is just walking a couple of laps through the house every hour or so. Both ice and heat can help with the pain-lots!

Good morning everyone, I've been playing with the Sparks Mobile App for a while now. However, I was unaware of the Sparks teams until I did a Google search for the Gazelle exercise machine. Anyway the link led me to the full Sparks site and that is where I found you :)
I was injured on the job on January 13th and have been struggling ever since. We've run the gammit with tests and therapies. So at this point I am in limbo. I desperately want and need to get off these pain medications. One of the physical therapists suggested that I need to strengthen my core muscles and that would help to alleviate some of the pain. My biggest problem is that any impact radiates thru my back. So just this morning I dusted off the Gazelle and lasted 5 minutes. Talk about low impact there is none! I think for now I am going to shoot for the 5 minutes 3 times a day with resting in between.
thank you so much for being here. I'm so glad I found you! I've spent far to much time alone and in pain not wanting to socialize. Forgive me I tend to be emotional these days.
Thanks again from Mexico, NY
I look forward to Sparkling with you

I wish I could give you some suggestions. I have found it difficult to walk, stand, sit, lay down, etc., at times. When that happens, I just want to cry. For example, last Thursday I walked around the farmers market, Trader Joes and a book store. Turned out it was 8/10 of a mile total but over a 3 hour stretch. For the past 4 days, I could hardly move. Today is much better. Unfortunately, when my back is not bothering me/sore, I tend then to overdo things that have been left undone. Then I am back to square one again. I have a lumbar support belt that I wear when doing any type of heavy lifting (over 5 pounds!) and have been told that there is nothing I can do to harm the structure of my back (I saw 2 surgeons, 2 physiatrists, a pain management dr, 2 physical therapists and nothing helped. Surgery is out of the question as only a 25% chance of success emoticon ). So, I am absolutely no help to you whatsoever. I can only encourage you to talk to your dr and make sure the jogging/walking has not caused injury. Perhaps leave off jogging and just walk for a while.

Happy Tuesday! I just rejoined SparksPeeps last week and found your page today. I'm hoping for some answers / encouragement from others like me :) I was in my best shape of my life just over one year ago and somehow herniated a disc in my L4 & L5 (May 2014) that went directly into my sciatica nerve in my left leg (no idea how it happened). I ended up finally having a microdiscectomy in July 2014, which was instant pain relief. I am just now getting back to a place in my life where I'm ready to exercise again. I jogged/walked a couple of times last week (lightly) and did some stretches & lifting with light dumbbells (5lbs each) but I woke up sore yesterday in my lower back. I pretty much stood all day at work as I have a 'stand up / sit down' station & walked the floors of my office as sitting was just too uncomfortable. I'm assuming though that this is normal but I'm still afraid of a relapse. Any help, suggestions, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

I am not really new to the group. Just had major work issues for the past couple of years and spent no time on the computer when I was home. Anyway...I was finally diagnosed with 3 things going on with my back causing all the pain and spasms. Some days I could barely walk. So, after seeing 2 neurosurgeons and getting the same response - surgery is NOT an option. I have adult onset scoliosis, osteoarthritis and sciatica in my low back. I am now back on track and have gotten rid (yes, I said rid) of most of my pain. I went to a dr at a pain management clinic and had spinal decompression. It took 3 months, 4 days per week but I must say that I have not experienced any debilitating pain for the last year. Hallelujah. I am able to walk short distances limited by the sciatica.

For those who have issues exercising - When my back was at its worst, I invested in a chair apparatus that has resistance bands. I was not able to stand and exercise as I had issues with my balance. It is great. You might want to check into it. It is The Resistance Chair Exercise System. It was spendy but the only way I could get any sort of exercise.

Also, if you can only exercise for 5 minutes at a time, that is great. 5 minutes is better than none. Keep at it.

emoticon Hi. I'm Jan. Been on and off again on Sparks. Just returned again. My daughter was diagnosed diabetic last week. Now she is serious about weight loss and she is the meal planner. We are both diabetic. I am joining this team because I have fractured C5 & C6 in 1993 and T5 & T6, L3 & L4, and crushed the sacrum in 1997. Both injuries happened on my job as a nurse. I have been disabled since 1997. I have been going to a pain clinic and have had an ablation of both sides of my spinal nerves of my lower back. Planing to have more ablations done in February. I have lived in constant pain since the injuries occurred. I gave up on pain meds except Motrin. I just live in pain. I can;t think right on narcotics. The ablations have helped the pain but my back strength has diminished. I can barely walk around the house. I have been in and out of a wheelchair. emoticon

I have 5 of 7 cervical discs damaged. Just found this out and that I have MS at the same time via MRI.. Major double whammy of bad news. I feel like my neck is breaking. Haven't seen a spine specialist yet, but I'm scared what they are going to tell me. My neck snaps and cracks with every movement and it hurts and feels hot. I am on a treadmill and elliptical every day, doesn't seem to bother it. Just everything else I do bothers it.

Hello! I'm Dawn. I herniated L5 S1 almost two years ago and had a microdiscectomy Christmas 2012. Recovery was slow, but I thought I had made it out of the woods. This June I re-herniated the same disc. Instead of surgery, I tried physical therapy, and it went great. Now I'm trying to focus on getting weight off and strengthening my core so I can avoid further problems. It is unsettling to know I could very well return to that horrific pain if I'm not careful. I do have nerve damage from my first injury, but I can walk and I'm doing pool exercises. I also have Trigeminal Neuralgia, another painful nerve condition. I believe the medication I'm on caused my fall which led to my back injury. I want to stop this snowball from rolling any further!

Hi I'm Jane and new to spark people. I have a herniated disc at L5-S1 and some degenerative discs above it . I wasn't slim to begin with, but I'm now the heaviest I've ever been so looking for inspiration. I do walk 2 miles most days, and do physio therapy, walking can be painful but I find it's the best thing for me now. I also like to do some of the yoga on wii fit. I don't post much, but just wanted to say 'hello' emoticon

Hi! I'm Audrey. I'm 29, a wife of 7 years, and mother of 2 (ages 3.5 y.o. and 8 months). Unemployed besides the whole full time mom gig. I found out in December of 2013 that I have at least 2 herniated discs. (I say at least because they only checked my lumbar spine and sacroiliac, and I suspect I have a few thoracic and cervical slippages as well) I have about 50 more pounds to lose on my weight loss journey, down from 100, and those 50 pounds all off in the 8 months since I had my second daughter. Go me! emoticon

So anyway, the back pain has been getting near unbearable lately and the muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory, and pain meds that they prescribed me are doing nothing for it. I'm determined to avoid having surgery for it (and the gallbladder issues I have as well). I know I need to keep moving, but some days it's really hard when it hurts to sit, stand, lay, or move. They don't think that physical therapy is a good option for me, because they think that might just make matters worse... go figure that otherwise I'm cleared for exercise within reason, aka no sit ups and crunches. I've been swimming the past few days, but even that leaves me in pain afterwards... it's depressing.

But I'm pushing on anyway. My kids need me to be able to keep up with them, lift them up when they fall, and let's not forget, care for myself. emoticon

Hi everyone! Figured I'd join the team since I'm trying to find out what exercises to do and not do. I keep hurting myself if I venture out into anything "new" or "intense". I herniated my L3/L4 disc pretty severely last spring and was in the absolutely worst pain of my life. I could barely sleep, had to crawl on the floor some nights, and it took forever to get my MRI, spine doc appt, then PT - took 2 months total for all of that. Horrible. Through lots of PT and determination, my disc has decreased 75%. I also have arthritis in the lumbar region, as well as a fracture of some kind my doc said I would have gotten before I was 6 yrs old.. spondylo-something.

Needless to say I've gained about 30 lbs and need to lose it! It's so hard since I went from a warehouse job to a desk job, and top that with not being able to do the exercise that I used to be able to do. Someday!!

Greetings Everyone! I have been a Sparks gal for a few years now, found your team today and it sounded like me so though t I would join the group. I have been disabled for 3 yrs with spinal lumbar stenosis ,spondylitis (sp?) at L4,L5, and I so love their description of my hip pain (something is just not right in your hip) Years of heavy labor and falling accidents have definitely gave me a double whammy. Can't stand or walk for more than 5 minutes at a time. I am fortunate that my wonderful husband and service dog was sent to help me through these years. I fight the pain with herbal rememdies and exercise... my exercise of choice is Callanetics which I have done since 1989. I walk/ride in the wheel chair weather permitting daily. I really look forward to making new friends here, helping folks as I can , and getting new ideas for coping.
Namaste all!

Good morning! I'm 51, happily married for 24 years (tomorrow), have a daughter in college and a step-son who is married and has given me an incredible grandson. I have high BP, high cholesterol (hereditary) and chronic back pain. I'm dealing with an aging mother and mother-in-law with numerous health issues. I don't want my kids to have to deal with the same with me so I'm striving to get into better health. My trainer sent me a link to SparkPeople in 2012 but I didn't decide to give it a try until Feb 2014. Hello, I have been a member of Spark People for years with yo yo ing results. I used to jog for weight loss but last December my back pain landed me on the couch for months. I gradually got back on my feet with cortisone injections, time, and challenging myself to walk daily even if just around the block. My injury is a herniated disc and stenosis at the same location L4-L5. I have other bulging discs throughout my spine but they don't seem to bother me. I have constant pain down my left hip and leg down to my foot.
I tried a little bit of everything but money is a factor. I did chiropractic care with decompression, muscle stim, and ultrasound. My chiropractor actually was the one to tell me I need surgery. I haven't had any surgeries yet. I have constant pain but can still function with lots of grin and bear it. I have two young children, I babysit, and elderly caregive while my husband travels a lot for work. I did some physical therapy but with a very high copay I cannot afford each visit, I went back to the gym(much cheaper) with what I've learned and workout on my own. I try to avoid painkillers because I drive kids around all day but do take them at night on occasion. My biggest issue is sleep, or lack of it. I cannot lay down without pain and I cannot sleep through it.
I'm in the process of lots of trial and error to see what exercises I can do safely. I love the arc trainer for cardio but have to be careful. Mostly I walk, walk, and walk some more. Every Sunday I hike with my dog and a friend, easy trails with varying distances depending on my pain that day. Hiking is my mental therapy ;)
This back injury has been a journey. I feel like I constantly have to cheer myself on, check my frustration and lack of patience, and Checkin with my body to see how it feels every minute of every day. I think the mental battle may be more difficult than the physical battle but all in all it Is simply exhausting. I keep pressing on, trying to find more natural pain management techniques and believing my body is strong despite an injury.

Hello everyone. I have long term hyperlordosis, and have been diagnosed with endorphin deficiency and fibromyalgia. I'm currently in physical therapy for the muscle problems (legs, back, abdominals) that hyperlordosis has caused for the many years I've had it before it was diagnosed. (You can see the curve in my spine in my childhood photos- and I was generally an underweight and sickly child, surviving chemo made me spindly and I didn't gain weight until I got pregnant)

I maxed out at 270. I'm down to 255. But any activity that includes walking, or worse, standing, puts such pain in my spine it makes me feel ill. Since the pain started, I stopped moving around as much, which made me gain weight, which is mostly in my lower abdominal area, which pulls my spine forward even more.

The endorphin deficiency means all those happy people who talk about how good exercise makes them feel, I don't get that. I hurt more after exercise, because it uses up what little endorphins I have. That makes physical therapy biweekly torture.

I'm increasing my protein intake to help create endorphins, but I can only go so high since I live with a single kidney. I'm trying to do what I can, but it's hard when I have to save energy to do things like dishes and wash myself.

Hello, My name is Tina. I have been with SP for a few months now. I suffer from stenosis, degenerative disc disease. I'm with some other the other members here...tired of hearing what I should do for my back from people who have no idea what I suffer from every minute of every day. I have been dealing with applying for disability for 2 years, only to be denied. I was doing clerical work for the past 14 years. disability sent me for a physical ability test....said I could do light duty!!! What do they think I've been doing???? I'm frustrated. I will be getting a lawyer for this round with SSI. Hopefully I will get approved this time.
Not that I'm glad others are suffering but its nice to "meet" others who are dealing with the same issues. Glad you have this forum.

Hi, in early 2013 I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis, two protruding disks and some degenerative disk disease. With lots of work in physio I was starting to see improvement in the pain - but over the holidays I caught a cold and every time I coughed my back would spasms. Now, I feel like I'm back to stage one. I am feeling very frusterated.

I guess I'm just looking for motivation and hope from people who are going through similar things.

Hi

I am one year post L5 fusion. I still have some pain but I am so much better that I was. I could barely walk because of leg pain before the surgery. I have occasional back pain and some foot pain now.
I am hoping to lose 35 pounds and live healthier this year emoticon

Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.

Welcome.
I do Pilates for about 40 every other day or about 3 days a week. When I cannot get outside, if I can I walk for 30 minutes every other day.

Happy to hear things are going so well for you, especially with the hard work. Can I ask which surgery was the more difficult to recover from.

My problems are in the L4/L5 area. Walking was my favorite activity. It has been suggested that have a fusion. At the time I rejected the idea and asked no questions. Instead, I lost about 15 pounds and things improved. Now I have gained that back and again can't stand or walk for long. I know down the road I face your decision. As a teacher, I don't know how I can have surgery and still do my job. Teachers stress about things like that.

Hello. I am Teresa. I used Sparkpeople a few years ago to lose 30 pounds. Any pictures you see are from then. I have gained back all the weight plus a little.

I had 3 bulging discs, but the doctor said they are not as bad as they were. The bad news is now I have lost most of the height of my s1. I have sciatic pain daily. I can't walk or stand for very long at all. Just walking to the cafeteria at work puts me in horrible pain. My worst pain is all the way down my leg, not necessarily in my back.

I don't show my pain on the outside so most people don't realize how bad it is. I work through the pain and am trying to stay with Taekwondo which I have done for over 6 years now. My instructors are very understanding and realize I can't do everything or need to modify things for me. When I stop moving I get much worse. That is hard to explain why I keep doing physical activities even though the pain is so bad.

I am SO sick of getting unsolicited advice from people about my back even though they don't know even half the story. They all seem to know exactly what I should do because they know someone that had back pain and is fine now.

Just wanted to give an update for those who might go through what I did.

July 25th I had a spinal fusion at L4-L5. I had two large cysts removed from inside my spinal column and the fusion was done. I also had the facets removed on both sides. I now have a lovely 6-8 inch scar which has healed nicely

5 weeks later I had a cervical fusion at C5-6 and C6-7

It has been a tough road but I am a tough lady and I am happy to say that I am back to walking 10,000 steps a day and doing my housework.

Am I completely pain free? No, I may never be but it is much better than it was. It takes 12-18 months to fully heal from fusion surgery somI have quite a way to go.

A few things I will mention that I know helped me heal faster than normal.

I walked before surgery despite the pain. I kept it up so I would be strong and healthy.

I lost weight, a lot of it. can see my before and after on my Spark Page. I am still a work in progress but I am happy to say I believe it will happen

These two things are so important when dealing with back issues, I can't stress this enough. Moving gets the blood flowing wich sends nutrients and oxygen to your spine.

I understand pain makes movement hard but you definitely need to move through the pain. I broke my walking up through out the day. I used my IPod to distract me and I went out and walked. I did this without medication pre surgery

Post surgery I was up a few hours after surgery and walking. It took a bit of time to work my way up to 10,000 steps again but I did it and I am now off medication. I do have clearance to take ibuprofen now because I also have an autoimmune disease and my lab work was out of whack. It does help with my post surgical pain.

I am writing this because before surgery all I read were horror stories. I was in a situation called cauda equine syndrome because of the cysts in my back. It got to the point where I couldn't urinate so I had to get surgery as the nerves exiting my spine were being compressed.

I wanted to
let those who have to get surgery know that it isn't the end of life as you know it. There are success stories and I am one of them.

It won't be easy and you will have to work hard. The surgeon can do the surgery but I had to work even harder.

If any of you have any questions please send me a message, I really want to help anyone who needs it as I have been there

Welcome.
I have degenerative spine in the upper and lower cervical, lumbar, sacral and thoracic parts of spine if not for pain meds, burning nerves and shots I could not function. I go to accyncture and PT.
I do a lot of yoga and Pilates and try to keep my weight down. I walk a lot when no threat of snow or ice. My balance is not the best.

It is comforting to find people who understand what I experience. My L4 and L5 are degenerating due in part to scoliosis. My favorite form of activity was walking. Now I cannot walk more than a half mile before I feel pain, numbness, and pins and needles. I teach and sometimes must sit when I'd much rather stand and be more mobile for students. A neurosurgeon offered three years ago to fuse my back or injections. Still not mentally ready for either but gaining weight from lack of activity and hypothyroidism has frustrated me. Once the next few weeks are over, I hope to find others who have made the decision I can't and see how they are doing with their decision.

Beauty is on the inside

Hey people,
I'm not new to sparks people. a couple of years ago I was 270pounds....I used sparks people to help motivate me and teach me the healthy way to loose weight. Well I lost 50 pounds with Sparks people and it motivated me so much I lost another 100 pounds by my self and reached my goal weight. It was the best feeling I ever felt in my life. I actually FELT beautiful. Well I stayed active and kept it off for a couple of years. But unfortunately in the early spring this year I was gardening and one of my disks in my back popped out and i was in horrible agony for weeks, after my back started feeling better I wanted to start my running and exercise again because i gained a little from being immobile. I pushed myself to hard and popped the disk even more and now I have shooting pain running down my leg from my sciatic nerve. I have gained 35 pounds over the summer and am very depressed about it. My doctor told me no exercise! Well a couple of weeks ago a friend of mine gave me an inversion table and I have been using it religiously for weeks now and it has helped soooo much! I hope my disk goes back in eventually. I really don't want to be in pain for the rest of my life :(

Hey! I have been with sprkpeople for yrs. I fell down 3 steps 2 yrs ago and broke both my feet, I hit the cement floor hard! After my feet healed I still couldn't walk, My feet hurt something awful and my legs wouldn't work very well. After several drs and some testing they decided I hurt my back when I fell- I already had 2 bulging discs in my lower back- and that was causing the pain in my feet. I had to retire because I can't be on my feet for long, I can't go on nice long walks, or do anything that puts much pressure on my feet. My only exercise is a recumbant bike. The dr told me to lose weight and do back strengthening exercises, which I did for a while, but then my hands started to give out on me and my hip bursitis started acting up. Now I have also gained weight, which really does make me feel worse! Help!!

HI ALL,
I'm new to the group. I have been off work since the beginning of April as a result of a back injury. I have been to multiple pain clinics, and a neurosurgeon. Only offer for surgery is to put a rod in my back with only 60% chance of relief...and I'm only 32...so I am here to lose weight and get healthy again and hopefully get back pain relief. SO, that's me. emoticon Nice to meet you all.

Well, I'm new to the group....not new to Sparkpeople, though! I love Sparkpeople! I"ve been Sparking since 2007 or so! I have had back issues in the past. Long story. But this time I messed it up and do not know when I did it! I am open to suggestions and help!!
My lower back was hurting me last week, so while I was at work, I had my personal TENS unit hooked up to me. I didn't go to the gym that day; I went to my mom's to pick up my doggies. (she had been taking care of them b/c we were moving from the other side of town). I think 'moving' is what threw my back for a loop. I was very careful not to lift anything too heavy. I left all that up to my hubby & 17 year old kid! My back stated hurting so bad, I had to come home & rest it. I think the hubby thought I was faking so I wouldn't have to do any work. He thinks that way. ;-/ I had to see the Chiro on Thursday & Friday for an alignment. I knew it was out of alignment b/c of the familiar pain. Then on Monday I attempted to go back to work. Then I had to leave at lunchtime, to head to the Chiro b/c it was hurting so bad. Chiro said I was out of alignment again, and was having spasms. So I stayed out of work until yesterday. I was only my way to work & back started hurting so bad; I couldn't get comfortable in drivers seat; I couldn't adjust my pelvis. So I detoured to head twd chiropractors office. I pulled over to call him, and couldn't get back into the car. I had to call my hubby to come get me. It hurt too bad to raise my leg & slide my body into drivers seat.
(I think I made a believer out of hubby). I had to call in sick to work, again. I hate to call in sick!!!!!! Chiropractor would even adjust my back. He ordered an MRI, saying that I must be having some nerve hit by a buldging disk but only an MRI could tell.
I had never had an MRI. I always been healthy! I haven't even seen a family doctor in over 2.5 years.
the MRI does show a buldging disk at L4 & L5. Chiro doesn't recommend surgery; only rest & ice. He did want me to go to Family Doctor to get pain meds.
I had to hit up an urgent care facility b/c I don't even have a family doctor. I swear, I'm never sick!!! Family doc injected me w/ 2 anti inflammatories (not fun) and put me on Prednisone for 4 days, some weak pain pills (Naproxen 500 mg), ;-) and some YUMMY flexeril for nighttime! ;-)
It's killing me that I can do no lifting b/c my Pug child wants to be next to her mommy, all the time. If I'm on couch, she wants up on couch! If I'm in bed, she wants up there. She's my Velcro child! and I can't lift her~~~~~~~~~~~ She's my lover muffin pie!!
emoticon

Hello! I am not new to Spark but I am new to this group. I have severe facet disease in my lumbar spine and two large cysts that have grown into my spinal column. They are compressing the nerves exiting my spinal canal causing cauda equine. I also have a slippage called spondolythiasis. Because of this I will be getting a Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion known as a PLIF next Thursday.

I will be getting a titanium cage and screws and a bone graft from my hip. I will also wear a brace for awhile after.

Lucky me, my neck is just as bad so afternInhealmfrom this I will be getting a fusion in my neck at C6-7

I am 50 years old and live in Huntsville AL. I have two sons ages 25 and 29. One is in the Army and is married. My other son is in grad school at Boston University and will graduate in August.

I am married to my best friend. We have been married for 30 years!

Looking forward to getting to know all of you

Hi everyone!!! I am not new to SP, but new to this group. Three weeks agoI had back surgery for a disc that herniated while I was ice skating in January. In short, I dealt with very underqualified doctors for many months, did three MRI's, steroid injections, PT, traction, and many months of pain medications that did no good....finally got to see a neurologist after being sent to an ER in a hospital a ways away and had surgery about a week later. According to the surgeon and neurologist I should have had surgery 3 months ago. So now, I am just glad that it got done!!!

I am a very physically active person and am going CRAZY not being able to do anything for so many months! Can't wait to meet you all!

Youngest step child of 7 is 5 yrs and my goodness is he a handful. Weekend is going well aside from our only vehicle breaking down. Although I met a wonderful couple while I was stranded and the man happened to be a mechanic. They helped get my vehicle home and came over today and did all of the repairs. I'm feeling very fortunate and blessed this weekend. :D

Sounds like you at least have support from your doctors so that is good. How old is your little one? Hope you are having a good weekend without too much pain.

Janet,

The doctors are calling it SI Joint dysfunction.
Here is Wikipedia's definition

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction or incompetence generally refers to pain in the sacroiliac joint region that is caused by abnormal motion in the sacroiliac joint, either too much motion or too little motion. It typically results in inflammation of the SI joint, and can be debilitating.

I have been put on permanent restrictions regarding how much I can lift, and how much bending I do. I've had steroid injections with no positive results and have prescription pain meds that I only take in times of severe pain since I have a little one at home.

Hi Sherri,
I'm not sure what that is, and I am fairly new to the group myself. Transitioning from work to home is an adjustment in itself but combine that with learning about how to deal with injuries and it can create a big change in your life. It's good to reach out. I stop in almost everyday.
I am at home as well although almost an empty nester. I taught preschool with special needs years ago which was hard on my bad back to begin with but after a car accident it just didn't work for me. So, I stayed home with my kids instead. We just went through a number of years traveling to other states to help care for our parents. That part of our lives is now at a peaceful end so I have been re-reading The Spark and trying to set some new goals for myself. Right now I feel as if I am just drifting along from day to day. Good to meet you. Can you tell me more about the joint problem.

Hello,

New to the group, wondering if anyone else is dealing with SI Joint problems? I injured myself at work and have since been let go from my job and now am a stay at home step mom. My family and friends try to be helpful and supportive but just don't understand the pain. looking for motivation, support, friends and ideas on how to get/ stay in shape with my injury which I have been told is permanent.

Welcome Mel, I have used all the things you said and a lot of what you describe I have been through or am experiencing on my less painful scale.
I am taking a mid level does of cymbalta and that has been the miracle cure pill for me at this time. I am sure my body will build up a tolerance and it will not work eventually - I know I am on borrowed time but I am loving it at this time.
Welcome and do not be shy. I am so glad you are here and doing better than you were.

Hello...

I joined a few months ago but haven't posted much - it's been a busy spring! I just thought I'd post my past here. It's been really too hard to think about it to actually share it before now...

Background: in 2 days on June 9 I will celebrate my 4th "life" day - my "big" surgery for scoliosis which saved my life and allowed me to see my kids marry and have my first 2 grandkids. It is VERY good. My spine started collapsing in 2005 - suddenly, after ignoring it for 32 years after I finally got out of a back brace. The pain was indescribable. Breathtaking. Continuous.

Long story short, I had 4 years of unreal living while all my vertebrae and discs just disintegrated. I was on the heaviest narcotics my pain docs could give me and it just barely made living tolerable. I had over 36 steroid injections, nerve radio-something, chiropractic work, acupuncture, tens units and other stuff. Being an overbearingly HAPPY person, I still contemplated suicide several times. You've seen animals in traps trying to chew off their legs to get away from the pain? You can't chew off your back.

I found out that our spines have nerves that are involved in EVERY part of us - limbs, head, organs that help you breath, digest food, eliminate food, involve sex, you name it. Insidious when affected. Finally, the curvature was crushing my heart and lungs, so I had to do something.

After 2 small fusions (C4-7) cervically, (and one decompression from bending over backwards to kiss the Blarney Stone) I had a 17 level fusion (T3-L5) that was 17 HOURS long, with a month stay in hospital, then release and readmittance for another cleanout surgery for MRSA. 2009 was a very, very long summer, but I don't remember much of it at all now. My family took all their vacation time and moved to Denver to be near me, which was amazing, except I don't remember much. I had both lungs collapse and got pneumonia and stopped breathing twice (which I DO remember, go figure, which was why my children took shifts and NEVER left my side for 2 weeks....).

The one thing that my old doctor did well for me was tell me to apply for Social Security disability. The money is totally minimal, it about pays for my meds, but it also paid for the $880,000 surgery and infection repair. I shudder to think what it would have been like to have to deal with insurance – I’m sure we’d be in dire straits…I felt like such a burden back then, I would’ve broken under the guilt of destroying us financially.

I’m far from perfect; I have to use a cane because my right leg has nerve damage in the thigh and walking is always painful. I lay down a lot because my neck starts screaming from the nerve pain after being up awhile. The whole back side of my body and the front of my thighs is numb to touch and it still drives me crazy. Part of my spine was already fused from my teenage years in a brace in a kyphotic – forward – curvature, so I can only stand up straight by bending my knees, but my doc says a final L5-S1 fusion can fix that in a couple years.

And the early nerve damage at around C7 still makes my arms and hands hurt and be clumsy. But I’m still working on them. I can play the guitar again – slowly – and my fine motor control is improving. The most amazing part is that I am ALIVE. It is SUCH an amazing gift to us all, sometimes I can’t believe that we’re not all just walking around staring at the world with our mouths open…

....sometimes I do. I probably look idiotic, but I don't care. I am SO not afraid of dying anymore. I AM ALIVE! And it's such an amazing gift to us all....I try to keep looking for more I can do to pay back my Creator. One thing would be - finally - losing this weight to be a better role model for my family. And, of course, to improve my health. So, here I am....

Michelle

I have been on this page for awhile but was inactive. I am inactive with movement. I have severe spinal stenosis. I was going to the pain clinic and getting shots in my back however, I am on coumadin now so I had to stop getting the shots. I am in the process of finding a chiropractor who does acuncture and accepts Medicare.
I walk with a walker so I move very slowly. I am on Social Security Disability. It is very difficult lose weight when you are pretty much sedentary.

Hi, Misscus, and Resaria....

Thanks for the email. Yeah, pain kind of sinks one down to the most comfortable level of existence at times, and returning to these boards is hard. Maybe that's why it's called a challenge, eh?

I'm pretty happy today - I got a steroid shot in my knee, which raises my spirits because now I can walk better, sleep better, move better, and that makes dealing with back pain EASIER! So I am looking forward to flower beds and vegetable gardens....and babysitting grandbabies and bunches of other stuff. You just gotta keep moving. Keep engaged.

Never let it win!!!!! Keep living big...

Welcome Resaria, it's a good team, we all have pain issues, so we might not get back to the group to post everyday. But eventually we will. Feel free to post on the daily chat thread.
