Today, I started pt!...... for me it was horrible, so don't think my experiences will be the same for you! I am the girl who in the past would join a gym, go one day and go home with pain! AND NEVER go back! After I had my lapband surgery, and lost 96 lbs, I went to the gym a lot! I was a gym rat! Until, my dearest best friend and older brother died! So I have 45 lbs more on my body by going into a depression, this is 3 years ago! I am only saying this because I didn't enjoy pt at all! Already, my 8 sessions has been reduced to 6' by me!.... I could not believe how I had to do exercises so early after my surgery. Thank u for letting me express my feelings!
My brother was my best friend and I kind of don't let myself get hurt again. I am talking about emotionally! Good luck at the neurosurgeon! Ask about pt..........

Hello Tracy, sorry to read your post and the stuff that you wrote,
Great news that you made the MRI, I worked for several Mri centers for a total of 15 years! But never had one, until a few months ago! I was a bit confused about you seeing a neurologist, are you seeing a neurosurgeon? I am 3 weeks out of my back surgery where I had a neurosurgeon do the surgery! While I was there, several other patents has necksurgery.
I wish you good luck. This is a supportive group, so keep posting. Hope to be your friend to help with support!

Hello all.

My name is Tracy. I am the single mother of two beautiful young ladies. Amber 24 yrs old, and Jamie 16 yrs old. They are my support system, they try to keep me motivated to move and be happy.

I have had neck pain for years but never knew what it was. I woke up on morning and could hardly move. My neck hurt so bad i was crying. My arm went numb and had lots of tinkling in my hands. I called the doctor to get an appointment, this was on Thursday. The next day I have an MRI to see what was going on. I hate small tight spaces. It took 4 tries to get the correct image.

the following Tuesday I was told I have Cervical Spinal Stenosis, Left neuropathy. Thats 3 bulging Disc in my neck. 2 going side to side and 1 going front to back. the one going front to back is flatten my spinal cord.

The pain is awful, but taking all the medicine is worse.

Never give up, never surrender. You are important too.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this group too. I am back to SP after being gone for a few years. I have chronic lower back pain at L5-S1 due to 3 different injuries: Herniated Disc; Stenosis; and Spondylolisthesis. When I first came back to SP a few weeks ago, I tried to walk around my block and nearly put myself back in my traction gizmo! I hurt so bad I wanted to cry, and that's from an easy walk, not even a mile. UGH.

I have been told I should try swimming, but I also have shoulder issues, and have had neck surgery (fusion at C 5-6--7). Not sure I could make it from one end of the pool to the other. And no, I am NOT going to do Water Aerobics; if you do that great, but not ready for that yet!

I try to do some basic exercises, but I confess I am not real gung-ho about those. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, would greatly appreciate them!

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Thank you for asking. No, I didn't plan on pt., I have been afraid that they will be very aggressive and hurt me! I am just a few days shy of 69 years. I am in a lot of foggy pain right now.
Part 2 -- I just looked it up, I will read up more about it! Do they do Sciatica? I didn't see that listed! Thank u again!

I am a new person to this group! In the past, I was a team leader for a Lapband group. I have gained weight back due to an emotional time because of a loss of a loved one.
All of a sudden, I now have Sciatica. This is 3 months already and today I see the pain management dr for my 3rd and last epidural shot, My plan b is to begin acupuncture.

Could you share what inflames you , what things you should Not do etc , i too must find what I can and can Not do , it's not like a dr or nurse sits down with you and tell you , I told workers comp that I have a lot of trouble getting in and out of my small car and I was told that I did ALOT of physical therapy and I should know by now the proper body mechanics ! I have degenerative disc disease , I thought bending isn't really good for that

Hi. I'm Trace and I'm new to the group. My spine was broken when I was a child 40+ years ago and the muscles around the middle of my back grew around the broken area, since it happened while I was still growing and I didn't get treatment at the time. Now it is too late to be treated, but this is all I have ever known. I do not know what life feels like without back pain. I have learned what inflames it ..what to do..what not to do. That helps me tremendously, but I have never let this stop me from doing anything that I want to do. I have lived a full and happy life so far.

Hi, I am new to the group and not sure what to do. I have pinched nerves in my neck and in lower back, bone spurs all over spine and hips, Fibro, TMJ, etc so I am working on staying active and not letting it get me down. I have lost weight and trying to lose more because I know it will help the pain and me to feel better. Sometimes I crave food just to make me feel better

Not new to the group, but..... Now that I have had extensive L3-S1 surgery 5 weeks ago, this group is very important to me. I have had my share of challenges, but I keep going along. I see improvements along the way. BTY- I weigh 300 lbs, went to several doctors, had 1 say "absolutely no way". Fortunately, 1 doctor said yes.

Thanks, Fera. I had chicken pox over 50 years ago and never even thought about the shingles vaccine. I thought I was doing great doing the flu shot! The steroid injection worked for me before, so my fingers are crossed.

Dizzy, I have no space between last 3 places on my spine. The shot he gave me did not work. I have had Sciatica for the past year. Sorry about the shingles. My son just turned 51 and I keep telling him to get vaccine. He had a bad case of chicken pox when he was young. Good luck.

Hello, all. I have a bunch of little lumbar spine injuries that all up to one big pain in the tail (ha-ha). I joined Spark last fall, after a successful round of steroid shots in my lower back. Now the right side is acting up so I'm scheduled for another shot in early May. Hopefully it will quiet my back down for a few months. I had radiofrequency on it back in Feb, but it didn't help as much as the shots. I can't wait! Right now I'm recovering from a shingles outbreak. Boy, it takes a long time to heal!

Hi, everyone. I'm just getting started on SP, even though I joined a while ago. I have had a couple of herniated discs over the last couple years. Thankfully, with physical therapy, they have just about healed now. I'm here to keep from having to go through that again.

Hi, I have been a SP member for years now, but I am new to this group. I was rear-ended and pushed into the car in front of me as well about 5 1/2 months ago. I have been to the chiropractor (12 sessions) and am currently visiting a physical therapist (3 mos. now).

Today I tried the Dry Needling at my PT's office and have to say I am happy and hopeful. I hope each one of you finds the care and tools you need to recover from your injuries and get rid of your pain.

Best, Paula

My name is Linda and I have been in SP since 07/12/14 but am new to this team. MRI says I have 3 bulging discs and Sciatica because they are pressing on it. I am due for my first shot on the 17th. In the mean time, I am taking med that makes me into a zombie at night. It does help the pain but only until about 10 am. I am suppose to build up to 3 pills a day. I must continue to lose weight but for right now moving is a problem. Just standing up and sitting is my biggest problem. I see stars. I found this group on someone else's page. Glad I am here.

Hi Everyone! I am new to the group and looking to make some new Spark Friends.
I recently discovered I have herniated my L5/S1 disc. I'm learning to deal with that and am hopeful to do all I can to avoid the need for any procedures.

Would love to chat with anyone looking for encouragement.

Hello!! I've been with spark for a couple/few years and about 3 months ago I had a horse backing riding accident. I fractured C7 & L3, burst fracture of L3, spinous process fractures of T1-T7 (and broke 5 ribs and punctured my right lung). I spent 22 days in a neck brace and 74 days in a back brace, which I just got "released" from (permently off) last Wednesday. I start physical therapy on Monday. Thankfully I didn't lose the use of anything from my injuries, but now that the brace is off, I'm sore and a little scared. I need to ease back into physical activity and rebuild the muscles (primarily back and core) that I lost during my recovery.
Looking for a place where others have faced similar issues with their backs and can provide tips and support.

I'm Donna. I just moved from NC to WV a month ago. My husband and I will be married 3 years in October. I have 2 daughters (25 and 27) from a previous marriage.

I have multi-level degenerative disc disease and arthritis. I also have a labral tear and arthritis in my right hip. On May 7, I had surgery to repair a bulging disc (L2-3) and pinched femoral nerve. Recovery went well but, in the last few days, my lower back and right hip are starting to hurt again. I wore the back brace during the move and when doing any lifting. I'm hoping the pain is just from being much more active than I had been since mid-February when the back and hip issues first started and I had to use a walker to move around. I also know I have to lose weight to help my back and hip - plus the arthritis in my knees. I do NOT want to go through surgery again.

I'm looking to learn more about how to ease this back and hip pain without relying on pain meds and muscle relaxers. And I'm looking to learn more about the best exercises to lose weight and strengthen my back without hurting it further.

Hi - I found your team and hope this is a place I can call home. I have degenerative disc disease and lower back pain as well. Surgery is not an option for me at this time due to complications from anesthesia in my last 3 surgeries so P.T. and painkillers have been my "treatment". I try NOT to take narcotics so I use lots of heating pads, ibuprofen and just suffer through.

I know losing weight might help with my lower back pain though I don't think it will help with the problems in my C4 and C5. It's just hard to do when the pain is bad and food is that momentary comfort - ugh.

So I hope I can learn something from all of you and maybe I will be better off because of it. I live in North Central Tennessee on a farm, have a DH of 30 years and love the great outdoors.

Welcome Amy! My only suggestions are cold turkey it off the meds immediately and exercise as much as you can even if it is just walking a couple of laps through the house every hour or so. Both ice and heat can help with the pain-lots!

Good morning everyone, I've been playing with the Sparks Mobile App for a while now. However, I was unaware of the Sparks teams until I did a Google search for the Gazelle exercise machine. Anyway the link led me to the full Sparks site and that is where I found you :)
I was injured on the job on January 13th and have been struggling ever since. We've run the gammit with tests and therapies. So at this point I am in limbo. I desperately want and need to get off these pain medications. One of the physical therapists suggested that I need to strengthen my core muscles and that would help to alleviate some of the pain. My biggest problem is that any impact radiates thru my back. So just this morning I dusted off the Gazelle and lasted 5 minutes. Talk about low impact there is none! I think for now I am going to shoot for the 5 minutes 3 times a day with resting in between.
thank you so much for being here. I'm so glad I found you! I've spent far to much time alone and in pain not wanting to socialize. Forgive me I tend to be emotional these days.
Thanks again from Mexico, NY
I look forward to Sparkling with you

I wish I could give you some suggestions. I have found it difficult to walk, stand, sit, lay down, etc., at times. When that happens, I just want to cry. For example, last Thursday I walked around the farmers market, Trader Joes and a book store. Turned out it was 8/10 of a mile total but over a 3 hour stretch. For the past 4 days, I could hardly move. Today is much better. Unfortunately, when my back is not bothering me/sore, I tend then to overdo things that have been left undone. Then I am back to square one again. I have a lumbar support belt that I wear when doing any type of heavy lifting (over 5 pounds!) and have been told that there is nothing I can do to harm the structure of my back (I saw 2 surgeons, 2 physiatrists, a pain management dr, 2 physical therapists and nothing helped. Surgery is out of the question as only a 25% chance of success emoticon ). So, I am absolutely no help to you whatsoever. I can only encourage you to talk to your dr and make sure the jogging/walking has not caused injury. Perhaps leave off jogging and just walk for a while.

Happy Tuesday! I just rejoined SparksPeeps last week and found your page today. I'm hoping for some answers / encouragement from others like me :) I was in my best shape of my life just over one year ago and somehow herniated a disc in my L4 & L5 (May 2014) that went directly into my sciatica nerve in my left leg (no idea how it happened). I ended up finally having a microdiscectomy in July 2014, which was instant pain relief. I am just now getting back to a place in my life where I'm ready to exercise again. I jogged/walked a couple of times last week (lightly) and did some stretches & lifting with light dumbbells (5lbs each) but I woke up sore yesterday in my lower back. I pretty much stood all day at work as I have a 'stand up / sit down' station & walked the floors of my office as sitting was just too uncomfortable. I'm assuming though that this is normal but I'm still afraid of a relapse. Any help, suggestions, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

I am not really new to the group. Just had major work issues for the past couple of years and spent no time on the computer when I was home. Anyway...I was finally diagnosed with 3 things going on with my back causing all the pain and spasms. Some days I could barely walk. So, after seeing 2 neurosurgeons and getting the same response - surgery is NOT an option. I have adult onset scoliosis, osteoarthritis and sciatica in my low back. I am now back on track and have gotten rid (yes, I said rid) of most of my pain. I went to a dr at a pain management clinic and had spinal decompression. It took 3 months, 4 days per week but I must say that I have not experienced any debilitating pain for the last year. Hallelujah. I am able to walk short distances limited by the sciatica.

For those who have issues exercising - When my back was at its worst, I invested in a chair apparatus that has resistance bands. I was not able to stand and exercise as I had issues with my balance. It is great. You might want to check into it. It is The Resistance Chair Exercise System. It was spendy but the only way I could get any sort of exercise.

Also, if you can only exercise for 5 minutes at a time, that is great. 5 minutes is better than none. Keep at it.

Hello everyone. I am new to Spark, and dealing with issues of back pain. I have an arachnoid cyst on my spine, and Spondylosis. I am at a total loss as to how to handle the pain and limited mobility while trying to improve my fitness level. Any ideas?? By the way, my name is Denise and I am happy to meet everyone.

emoticon Hi. I'm Jan. Been on and off again on Sparks. Just returned again. My daughter was diagnosed diabetic last week. Now she is serious about weight loss and she is the meal planner. We are both diabetic. I am joining this team because I have fractured C5 & C6 in 1993 and T5 & T6, L3 & L4, and crushed the sacrum in 1997. Both injuries happened on my job as a nurse. I have been disabled since 1997. I have been going to a pain clinic and have had an ablation of both sides of my spinal nerves of my lower back. Planing to have more ablations done in February. I have lived in constant pain since the injuries occurred. I gave up on pain meds except Motrin. I just live in pain. I can;t think right on narcotics. The ablations have helped the pain but my back strength has diminished. I can barely walk around the house. I have been in and out of a wheelchair. emoticon

I have 5 of 7 cervical discs damaged. Just found this out and that I have MS at the same time via MRI.. Major double whammy of bad news. I feel like my neck is breaking. Haven't seen a spine specialist yet, but I'm scared what they are going to tell me. My neck snaps and cracks with every movement and it hurts and feels hot. I am on a treadmill and elliptical every day, doesn't seem to bother it. Just everything else I do bothers it.

Hello! I'm Dawn. I herniated L5 S1 almost two years ago and had a microdiscectomy Christmas 2012. Recovery was slow, but I thought I had made it out of the woods. This June I re-herniated the same disc. Instead of surgery, I tried physical therapy, and it went great. Now I'm trying to focus on getting weight off and strengthening my core so I can avoid further problems. It is unsettling to know I could very well return to that horrific pain if I'm not careful. I do have nerve damage from my first injury, but I can walk and I'm doing pool exercises. I also have Trigeminal Neuralgia, another painful nerve condition. I believe the medication I'm on caused my fall which led to my back injury. I want to stop this snowball from rolling any further!

Hi I'm Jane and new to spark people. I have a herniated disc at L5-S1 and some degenerative discs above it . I wasn't slim to begin with, but I'm now the heaviest I've ever been so looking for inspiration. I do walk 2 miles most days, and do physio therapy, walking can be painful but I find it's the best thing for me now. I also like to do some of the yoga on wii fit. I don't post much, but just wanted to say 'hello' emoticon

Hi! I'm Audrey. I'm 29, a wife of 7 years, and mother of 2 (ages 3.5 y.o. and 8 months). Unemployed besides the whole full time mom gig. I found out in December of 2013 that I have at least 2 herniated discs. (I say at least because they only checked my lumbar spine and sacroiliac, and I suspect I have a few thoracic and cervical slippages as well) I have about 50 more pounds to lose on my weight loss journey, down from 100, and those 50 pounds all off in the 8 months since I had my second daughter. Go me! emoticon

So anyway, the back pain has been getting near unbearable lately and the muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory, and pain meds that they prescribed me are doing nothing for it. I'm determined to avoid having surgery for it (and the gallbladder issues I have as well). I know I need to keep moving, but some days it's really hard when it hurts to sit, stand, lay, or move. They don't think that physical therapy is a good option for me, because they think that might just make matters worse... go figure that otherwise I'm cleared for exercise within reason, aka no sit ups and crunches. I've been swimming the past few days, but even that leaves me in pain afterwards... it's depressing.

But I'm pushing on anyway. My kids need me to be able to keep up with them, lift them up when they fall, and let's not forget, care for myself. emoticon

Hi everyone! Figured I'd join the team since I'm trying to find out what exercises to do and not do. I keep hurting myself if I venture out into anything "new" or "intense". I herniated my L3/L4 disc pretty severely last spring and was in the absolutely worst pain of my life. I could barely sleep, had to crawl on the floor some nights, and it took forever to get my MRI, spine doc appt, then PT - took 2 months total for all of that. Horrible. Through lots of PT and determination, my disc has decreased 75%. I also have arthritis in the lumbar region, as well as a fracture of some kind my doc said I would have gotten before I was 6 yrs old.. spondylo-something.

Needless to say I've gained about 30 lbs and need to lose it! It's so hard since I went from a warehouse job to a desk job, and top that with not being able to do the exercise that I used to be able to do. Someday!!

Greetings Everyone! I have been a Sparks gal for a few years now, found your team today and it sounded like me so though t I would join the group. I have been disabled for 3 yrs with spinal lumbar stenosis ,spondylitis (sp?) at L4,L5, and I so love their description of my hip pain (something is just not right in your hip) Years of heavy labor and falling accidents have definitely gave me a double whammy. Can't stand or walk for more than 5 minutes at a time. I am fortunate that my wonderful husband and service dog was sent to help me through these years. I fight the pain with herbal rememdies and exercise... my exercise of choice is Callanetics which I have done since 1989. I walk/ride in the wheel chair weather permitting daily. I really look forward to making new friends here, helping folks as I can , and getting new ideas for coping.
Namaste all!

Good morning! I'm 51, happily married for 24 years (tomorrow), have a daughter in college and a step-son who is married and has given me an incredible grandson. I have high BP, high cholesterol (hereditary) and chronic back pain. I'm dealing with an aging mother and mother-in-law with numerous health issues. I don't want my kids to have to deal with the same with me so I'm striving to get into better health. My trainer sent me a link to SparkPeople in 2012 but I didn't decide to give it a try until Feb 2014. I'm more of a reader than a poster so you probably won't see me much but I thank you in advance for all of your advice!

Hello, I have been a member of Spark People for years with yo yo ing results. I used to jog for weight loss but last December my back pain landed me on the couch for months. I gradually got back on my feet with cortisone injections, time, and challenging myself to walk daily even if just around the block. My injury is a herniated disc and stenosis at the same location L4-L5. I have other bulging discs throughout my spine but they don't seem to bother me. I have constant pain down my left hip and leg down to my foot.
I tried a little bit of everything but money is a factor. I did chiropractic care with decompression, muscle stim, and ultrasound. My chiropractor actually was the one to tell me I need surgery. I haven't had any surgeries yet. I have constant pain but can still function with lots of grin and bear it. I have two young children, I babysit, and elderly caregive while my husband travels a lot for work. I did some physical therapy but with a very high copay I cannot afford each visit, I went back to the gym(much cheaper) with what I've learned and workout on my own. I try to avoid painkillers because I drive kids around all day but do take them at night on occasion. My biggest issue is sleep, or lack of it. I cannot lay down without pain and I cannot sleep through it.
I'm in the process of lots of trial and error to see what exercises I can do safely. I love the arc trainer for cardio but have to be careful. Mostly I walk, walk, and walk some more. Every Sunday I hike with my dog and a friend, easy trails with varying distances depending on my pain that day. Hiking is my mental therapy ;)
This back injury has been a journey. I feel like I constantly have to cheer myself on, check my frustration and lack of patience, and Checkin with my body to see how it feels every minute of every day. I think the mental battle may be more difficult than the physical battle but all in all it Is simply exhausting. I keep pressing on, trying to find more natural pain management techniques and believing my body is strong despite an injury.
