Hi all my name is Bella. I am not yet 80 (66 years young here) But Irene and Pat said I am welcome to stay , so I think I will . I was always more mature for my age anyway LOL Thanks for the welcome.
I am new here. I have COPD and have been on steroids. Inactivity has made me put on way too much weight.*((as you can see from my picture)
I am borderline diabetic and my cholesterol is also borderline . I need help!!! LOL
I love to eat, it was never a problem before because I burned off the calories. I was a manager for a food service at a college and was contently on the go. I had to retire when I got COPD and it's been down hill since then. So I'm here to learn all I can and inch my way back to health. Or at least get better better than I am now.

This an introduction I did on Spark People's community of Lyn-Genets the Plan forum, but have been unable to keep up with the program at this point. Does it work here?


A friend was on the Plan, said she lost 20 pounds.
I was not unhappy with my weight – 3 years ago a nutritionist said I had a lot of “itises” and to go on a gluten free lifestyle. I did and lost 30 lbs without trying. Just give up breads (wheat) gluten and process foods (too much gluten hidden). After noticing the 30 lbs gone, I did go back to very occasionally eating gluten food and it was okay.

I am a recent widow and learning to live alone. After many, many years a stressful existence. Found I was eating out too much and my weight was still staying the same (30 lbs down) but was aching, tired, bloating, etc – all the itises cropping up. As the Plan is really an anti-inflation plan, I decided to give it a try, if I lose weight, an added bonus. After all I am a ‘closet’ Vegetarian.

Looking into Plan closely, I couldn’t figure out where I was going to find 20 days to set apart and eat all meals at home. Didn’t know if I could drink that much water. So before starting I tried 2 days drinking all the water, eating normal foods and lost 3 pounds. Am now on Day 10 and am finally getting the hang of it, but not losing the weight. I set a 20 pound goal, and think it should have been a 10 pound goal. I have seen a bit too many Solstice Summer Days in my life and have adjusted to and accept my body as is.

As I understand it, if you are reactive to a food, your weight goes up, if you stay the same you’re not reactive to the food you ate the previous day. When your weight stays the same (set) you are fine. I might be wrong.

This is my first experience with a message board and am finding it very helpful – the support is fantastic – I was ready to throw in the towel, but now I am a big support of SparkPeople

I just read an exercise tip on another team. Do wall pushups everytime you are in the bathroom. This was meant for the employed, but with age I'm in the bathroom very often, so it's a great idea for me.

Hi all -- just wrote a long message and lost it before it went. Don't know if this is the right place for me, but I am 84 years old and would like to eat healthy -- which to me is when I am able to cook meals for me at home. When I eat out, my will-power goes and when that goes I find my energy goes with it. You would think I would have learned something by this time.
Just checking to see if this is where I should be to help me keep on track.

I've been wanting to talk to other "oldies" about the strange, curious, routine & wonderful things that happen to us. I'll be 80 in August, and didn't feel at all old till I fell and fractured a lumbar disc. That's healed now, but it somehow activated arthritis I didn't even know I had. Now I feel old every time I stand up.
I live alone with my dog & cat on a lovely little lake in East Texas. My siblings, who were younger, are dead, and my son farms in Washington State. My 2 husbands, plus lovers are dead, & friends, except a high school best friend in Washington, are gone.
I've lost 50 lbs, with 45 left to go. I patio garden, embroider, & mostly watch news & cspan books on TV. I seem to have a gillion interests, & I'd like to live another 80 years to see how all this works out. So glad you're here. Thanks.

I love the name of this Team. As I age I admit I often find myself feeling like Oh no I've waited too long. In Feb of this year, I took a class that my PCP's office sponsored and during the intake interview, I was so excited when the doctor said to me as I was leaving; "Don't worry Paula, IT is NOT TOO LATE!!" We can make a difference with diet and exercise. Walking 30 minutes every day was suggested. My longest walking streak has been 5 days. But, I keep starting again.I do notice how much better I feel all over when I do walk.

Who am I ? I am 62 and married with one Chihuahua living in Colorado. The majority of my life, I was healthy and able to do most anything I wanted to do. In Sept of 2004, I was diagnosed with a giant brain aneurysm. I needed brain surgery to repair the aneurysm, during my recovery my carotid artery dissected and I had a stroke until they were able to do a bypass. The stroke left me paralyzed on the left side. After weeks in a rehab hospital I have regained my ability to walk and talk again. I try to remember to Count My Blessings Every Day.

I am looking forward to sharing and supporting each other on this journey to health and wellness. emoticon emoticon

Both my parents died of heart disease 3 to 5 years after surgery ---Mother had a detatched pulmonary valve and they were unable to do her 1 bypass because other surgery was already too much stress on her. Dad had 3 or 4 bypasses.

About 2 or 3 years ago my gp started a conversation with me re. my parents health. I said that the symptons were not evident until their late 70s (both died 82-83). I suddenly realized that that could be me ! And at 77 I felt most of my aches and loss of strength/endurance began to be more noticable. The stress of Bob's loss of first one eyesight and in last year of most of 2nd did not help, I'm sure. But his gp does not say anything re. diet, esp. knowing how Bob only stayed on diabetic II diet about 2 months. If he got this far with seemingly good heart and lungs, why fight it and all of us be miserable doing it. But I like the foods I've added so far ! Not as faithful as you, but already not desiring meat most meals.

HE TOO ENJOYS GOING OUT TO LUNCH BUT NOW HE IS MORE CAREFUL THAN ME ON WHAT HE ORDERS.
LAST NIGHT WHEN HE ORDERED-NO BUN- I FOLLOWED SUITE:)

I AM GLAD TO HAVE YOU AS PART OF OUR TEAM, EVEN IF YOU ARE A "YOUNGSTER" :)
GLAD ALSO THAT YOU ARE RESEARCHING AND APPLYING THE DR. FUHRMAN DIET ALONG WITH ME.

Hi to everyonE,
Ree has wanted to know more about me and so here is my bed time story. My life has really been dullsville. Always was lazy, most called me "quiet". Never had a bike, skates, went swimming, etc. For several years my hobby was playing a mandolin. Feeling sleepy yet?
After being an only child for 7 years, I was followed by 5 brothers... the last 2 after I no longer lived with my parents. I studied nursing but really not suited for it. Got married in 1955 to Bob who is now 87, very inactive even moreso sincehe has limited vision due to macular degeneration. Yet he loves to go out esp for lunch daily. I concede because I love him and want to do what I can to keep him happy.
You can read some info re. family on my Spark page. Those cuties are not that much in our lives at this time since their parents got divorced. But GGC, Evan, is expected to another family around Valentine's Day
About 10 years ago when I attended WW for 2 years, my GP suggested to get to a weight of 135 with my height at 5'2". Didn't reach it, regained plus AND now am 5feet at best ! emoticon
BTW, I won't hit 80 until next year, but appreciate seeing the hope you share for what can be ahead. So far you are the best team I have found on Spark. emoticon Fay

As this team is not just about age but keeping fit too I am learning from others how they do so. We are all different of course. I have an ankle problem which limits walking but I do home exercises. I have recently been diagnosed as having a bone thinning condition. Told its important not to gain weight and to do exercise. I have to eat a calcium rich diet too. We do mostly home cooking do it's up to me to chose the right ingredients. My husband loves to cook but I have to say what to cook and organise all ingredients I clear up too afterwards but he thinks he has done the whole meal! Bless him! Ree

Yes, I did my exercises today, I do 3 videos for cardios every morning, and walk up 15 floors of stairs every day except one in case something comes up to interrupt my schedule. I weight 126.4 this morning. I want to get down to 120, or less and not go up any more. I will be 80 in a couple of weeks. Oh and I am 5'1''.

Hello to everyone!! I am back and am now 84yrs old and will be 85 in October. I am, today, in good health and try to get in some type of exercise/activity 30min/day. I walk inside and outside and do Peggy Cappy's Yoga For The Rest Of Us.

I need to be with active seniors who are trying to keep postive and healthy. Many of my friends have passed on and those left are having health problems which seem to be related to obesity.

I am grateful I still drive, use the computer and have my senses emoticon .

Today, I am going to work on my Home Page and enter my food.

My weight is 165 and my goal is 159 by Easter. Is that unreasonable?

Hi. I am new to this site and I am not in my 80s yet but my mother is and I know I will be before I know it. I have alot of chronic illnesses (Fibromyalgia, Adrenal Fatigue and a bad back) so I do not get out and about like I would like to. I live in Arizona and man it gets so hot out here that it is hard to go outside sometimes.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

hi girls, I"m theresann2 so happy to join your group, and find women near my own age and know the problems we have with our health and weight. been up and down with my weight for years, join ww and lost 80 lbs, but through the years it all came back. my husband passed away 2 years ago and I live alone, have one son living near me and another in NY. have problems with my knees arthritius so it's easier to use a cane when I have to walk a short distance. I live in fl. on the west coast. thanks for letting my join. just thought I would tell you my age turned 85 last sept.

I've joined this team mainly to keep up with her, find out what she's up to, and get good tips and motivation from her and her Spark friends. (You all mean so much to her.) Hi,

My name is Cheryl and I am looking forward to being a member of this team. The name of the team actually caught my attention and when I saw the devotional thread I knew I was in the right place. I have had many unsuccessful attempts at losing weight. I'm married and a mother of 3 adult children. I want to be an example for them.

My goal is to get and stay healthy. I have no problem with exercise as I workout 5 - 6 days a week. My biggest problem is FOOD. What I have finally learned working out is great and necessary but until I get the food under control I will not be successful. So I am using the nutrition and fitness trackers M - F and working on doing so on the weekend.

I welcome any suggestions, my trackers are public and hopefully I can encourage someone else along the way.

HELLO, I ENJOY GOING TO ANYTIME FITNESS 6 TO 7 DAYS A WEEK. I WALK THE TREADMILL FOR 1 HOUR AND GET IN 4 MILES FOR CARDIO. THEN I ALSO DO THE BICYCLE FOR 30 MINUTES TO GATHER UP MORE CALORIES. Thank you for the nice note. Don't feel bad, I live in SC, but my children and grandchildren all live in Michigan, California and North Carolina. To fly is a big effort these days, it took us 2 days to get home from California the last time we flew out there. Michigan is a long way too and the only grandson I get to see often is in NC and that's a 5 hour drive. I am so sorry to hear about your husband's alzemiers, that must be a strain for you. When I read that you were orginally from Boston, it broght a kind of a pang to my heart, cuz I was brought up in Massachusetts, Grafton, near Worcester, and my younger son lives in Acton. I've pretty much given up the idea of visiting him because travel is such a workout with my husband having Alzheimers and the whole thought of keeping on with the supervision I need to do just wouldn't work on a trip.
We have a good life here in NY state and our kids come to visit when they can, so I'm not really complaining and I hope it doesn't sound that way.

I wish you all good things in your beginning with SP! And with continuing it, too.

Thank you !! My name is Irene, I am 70 years old and live in Hilton Head Sun City. I have three daughters and a husband and 5 grandchildren. My battle of the buldge started when I retired in 1998. I put on 55 lbs. and need to change my ways. I have had breast cancer twice and gone thru lumpectomies and radiation 10 years apart. I know how you feel regarding finding others in our age group who are interested in changing to a healthier diet, let alone working out in some way every day. You will be happy to know that this team is doing exactly that. And we are happy to share our experiences with each other.

I'm so glad to find this team. Just finding teams at all was new to me. I've been tracking my food for about 3 weeks and just began to track exercise.
I'm thrilled to find that there are others in their 80s with goals like mine. I live in a retirement center/senior housing, and I haven't met anyone here who seems to have a goal to reduce weight, tho many could probably be helped by doing so.
In the almost 2 years I've lived here I've gained 20 pounds and I was already about 30 pounds over my hoped-for goal to begin with. As you can maybe guess, the food in the dining room (dinner only) is mostly aimed at pleasing people's tastes, and very little to keep us healthy. Recently the dining director said that dark breads were more expensive, so they would have to be an "occasional treat!!" That really shocked me (the director is new) and I'm goiing to write him with some ideas on how he can afford healthier foods -- mainly, cut back on the long list of high-fat desserts every night.
I seem to be writing much more than the other posts I've seen, but I just want to add that my situation includes caregiving for my husband who's had Alzheimers for the last 10 years. We do have an aide twice a week who is a big help, but there's still a huge load of things that are my responsibility. It's a lot like having a 2-year old except he can't learn anything and has forgotten everything else. I'm not complaining, just mentioning it as it can often put a lot of stress into the mix. I'm learning to limit the things I let myself get involved in, but as a "people person" it's hard to do. I'm also beginning to keep in mind things that are for me, and Sparkpeople is certainly one I'm enjoying already.
