Hello,

I've just started back to Atkins. Read Dana Carpender's book, and realized that I've always felt much better when I eliminate carbs. Having an issue with loosing, but the fat fast helped shake things up.

Hi, I just started on this low carb journey after trying for the last 7 months to get this pregnancy weight off. I have done this before and had very pleasant results and am looking forward to getting those results again.

Very happy to have found this group--can't lose weight/keep blood sugars happy when eating very many carbs so back to basically Atkins OWL. Most of my story is on my SparkPage; biggest challenge is to MAKE myself exercise regularly (used to enjoy it) despite shot-to-pieces feet, hands, and knees. Also can't handle veggies for breakfast (gaaak!!!) so use 6 to 7 grams carbs Greek yogurt sweetened and flavored instead. Would be nice if I liked more kinds of veggies; so many of them taste SO bitter to me.
Suggestions welcome.

Peace out,
Mary S.

Back to stay...

Hi,
I'm Vicki and I have 65 lbs to lose. Back in the 80's I lost 105 lbs and kept it off for over 18 years. It wasn't until I took on my husbands eating habits that I gained back all I'd lost plus more. So starting Jan. 1-2013 I'll be going back on a very low carb way of eating, to get back a more healthy body, and have a lot more energy.

Wow, am I relieved to be here!

My name is Leslie and I live in Baltimore, Maryland.

I am a binge eater, and *the* only way of eating that helps me is Low Carb. I delude myself to think otherwise.

For me, I need not (at least for now) to count carbs as much as to eliminate sugars and other trigger foods.

I am extremely happy to be here, and look forward to the new year.

Gratefully,

Leslie

My doctor says I need to lose at least 50 lbs to get my blood pressure back to normal but that's a lot easier said than done. I KNOW what to do. It's making myself do it that's hard. But I'll get there. I just need to concentrate more on doing what I know to do instead of making excuses all the time.
I need to stick with a low carb/ high fiber plan so that means eating more carb friendly vegetables that are full of fiber.
I know I'm sugar sensitive so I'm working towards cutting out all forms of sugar. Even diet sugars cause me to have sugar cravings. So I'm working towards stopping all forms of sugar.
I'll make more changes as I go along.

My name is Connie and my goal is to lose 50 lbs and get off high blood pressure pills

Hello. I am not only limiting carbs, but also being more careful about the types of carbs I eat. This was really spurred on by a recent diagnosis of diabetes and very high cholesterol. It's not just about losing weight for me, but about gaining healthy habits. Glad to be part of this group!! :)

Hi, I'm Cheri , a 35 year old SAHM. I am now in the process of eating low carb with Atkins. I have just start out and am already having trouble. I know that if I get through the first two weeks that my energy is supposed to go up and my craving for sweets is supposed to go down but I am constantly starting over because I can't seem to make it two full weeks. I am just learning about what I can and can't eat on the program so I am kind of experimenting with low carb foods that I like and don't like. I am trying not to eat the same things over and over again. The hardest part is incorporating the veggies because I am not a veggie lover.

Persevere and you will win the prize.

Hi. New to the team and thought I'd introduce myself. I've been on-again-off-again low carbing for 12 years. I was introduced to the idea from my previous doctor when i was diagnosed with PCOS and he did further testing and found out that my insulin and other hormone levels were elevated, as well as cholesterol, and I had a borderline blood sugar. I've read Protein Power, Atkins, South Beach, Wheat Belly, and other books on the subject. I don't follow any particular regimen - I don't track my food, and I don't count carbs. I just know the right foods to eat and when I'm on track, I try to get my carbs from primarily veggies, some fruit, and very occasionally oats, sprouted grain bread or low-carb tortillas, brown rice, etc. I mostly try to avoid grains, starchy carbs, and sugar on a daily basis, though. I started SP probably about 5 or 6 years ago. I had an adjustable gastric band placed in 2009 and lost 90 pounds, primarily following a lowish carb diet, but life got crazy, I started eating carbs, and I gained 70 pounds back. I'm on my way back down now after getting back on track in June. I am one of the team leaders of the Lap Banders and Lap Band Surgery teams.

I joined the low carbers team because I love learning from other people's experiences, and I am always looking for new ideas to make eating low carb more enjoyable - sometimes I fall into a rut of eating the same thing all the time and get bored, and then I eventually start to stray. One of the best tips I have gotten here on Spark Fage Greek yogurt - excellent protein, no sweetener, and with a few berries and some toasted walnuts or almonds, it's as decadent as a dessert.

Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. ~ Oliver Goldsmith

Hello all, i've been attempting to low-carb for a long time. But get bored and fall back on carby foods when I emotional eat.

I've been low-carbing for about 2 months now and am sticking to about 50 - 100 carbs a day. Mostly from veggies.

Basically I'm hoping to find some recipe ideas and such to help me stick with this lifestyle this time.

Thanks,

Dana

Welcome, Sophie. It sounds like you've got lots of motivation to make changes, so the changes will happen. I know that, for me, just cutting out all the processed "white food" (white flour, sugar, rice, potatoes, and most pasta) made a huge difference in my metabolism. I've been using the Blood Sugar Solution diet now, which has a lot of things in common with South Beach, Clean Eating, and other "watch your carbs" diets.

The bottom line for me: lots and lots of simple veggies and low glycemic index fruit, healthy low sat fat proteins, all that water, and the dreaded e-word (shudder...exercise...). It works.

Good luck, Claudia

Hi,
I am new to this group. A year or so ago my internist told me I was insulin resistant and I need to cut out the processed carbs and watch the others. I did not get serious until I hit the big 50 in Feb. I started low carb again as it has worked in the past. I told myself this time I am doing it for me and also for my son who will graduate next May and is going into law enforcement. Unfortunately, he got my genes and needs to lose weight to qualify for training program. Lead by example, hopefully. I have been overweight my entire life and don't want the same for him.
Also, for me I want to be able to enjoy an active life with my hubby as we move into a different phrase in our life.

Re-introducing for the newbies...

emoticon Thought I'd better introduce myself, for those that don't know me.
I'm Vicki and I live in Florida.
I'm working towards making the healthiest choices I can when it comes to taking care of myself.
I want to make exercise a top priority as I have a couple of health issues that exercise would improve. Also it would definately give me more energy.
I am basically trying to keep all my nutritional numbers within a set goal I think will work for me. It's not strictly any one specific program. If I had to push it, I'd be more inclined to say it's a lower carb plan.
I'm working to lose about 100 lbs but have no set time to lose it in. I'd love to lose it over the next couple of years, but I tend to be a very slow loser. So I'll take it one pound at a time.

Welcome, Denise474.

The American Diabetes Association is a good place to go to get info, too, if you haven't already gone there. They'll send you a bunch of info for free. I talked to a person there and he told me that 45-55 carbs per meal was considered very good.

I told him that I was on 30 g of carbs per meal, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and 15 g carbs for 2 - 3 snacks. I lost 45 pounds right away, then I got stuck, now I'm trying for 25 and 10. I am so hungry right now and it's hard to stay at it, but the interesting things is I feel a lot happier. I've been off sugar for about 4 years, and I eat enough fruits and veggies to consider owning my own orchard. We have a garden growing in pots.

I have discovered, for myself, that I need to stay away from rice, pasta, bread, and (sorry mind went blank here). Anyway, that's my life at the moment. I hope you are finding a better lifestyle. I know I've learned that everyone has their own "formula" to live by and the hardest part is finding the formula.

It is possible to beat diabetes by losing the weight and making healthy choices. I intend to lose more weight and keep it off. I am currently at teh same weight for the last 12 months. I'm finding it hard to get on track even with lowering my carb intake. I also watch my calories, fats, fiber, protein, and some other things. You can go at it by just looking at carbs. It's up to you.

Have a great one and I wish you SparklingSuccess in reaching all your goals and dreams, health, wealth, and happiness.

Hi everyone, so happy to have found this group, i was recently diagnosed as being "prediabetic" 3 months ago, and have been on a mission to try and find out all i could about diabeties and what the complications are and how to eat etc. Thru trial and error i have found my way here, and i beleive the less carbs i eat the better i feel, and the lower my bs numbers stay. I am still figuring it all out in terms of how many per day will be good for me i am a work in progress and hope to get some more answers here and be of support and get support from you all. So glad to be here, looking forward to getting you know you !

We can do this!!!

Hi All! I am very new to low carb (3 days) but not new to Sparkpeople. I've been here on and off for years.

I never gave low carb eating a second thought. I thought it was some crazy fad diet.

I have been exercising daily for about 8 weeks, but I haven't seen much movement on the scale. I knew that I was consuming too much sugar, and through some research on eliminating sugar from my diet, I found a lot of information about low carb eating and it seemed to make sense.

I feel great so far. I certainly don't feel hungry.

I'm not following a true plan - I want to find my own balance. I am mostly using food charts to choose low carb foods and I'm trying to stay away from any that is highly processed.

I'm excited to see how this goes and I was really exciting to find a low carb Sparkteam!

Hope everyone has a great day!

New to the team, not to spark. I have lost 45 lbs this past year and have started putting it back on. I don't want to! I gained back 7-10, it fluctuates. Anyways, I have picked up the book carb addicts lifespan plan and started today. I did it before, about 4 or 5 yrs ago and it worked really well for me but I got pregnant and started eating everything all the time again.

This past year I tracked cals and began exercising a lot. Tracking cals has become so monotnous, I need a change. So here I am. Joined the team and looking for support.

My goal 140lbs and to find a way of eating that can truly be a part of me. I believe losing weight does not have to be hard. I just lack focus and a little self love sometimes....

Hey, I am back on Spark People as a do-over (see my forkitless page). I lost touch on my Robins-nest page after 2 injuries. It took me starting over to find my original page...and in a way find me. I am keeping the old page up to inspire me as well as others and the new page...well to track my weight and focus on what is important. Feel free to visit both!

Now on the lo-carb thing... I HAVE NEVER even vaguely wanted to do low carbs, but a friend talked me into it 4 days ago and I AM LOVING IT!

emoticon

Doing it again! See my other SP forkitless.

Got_Moxy, Welcome to the Team! Low carb should not give you headaches unless you were eating a lot of junk like maybe too many sugar alcohols. Unprocessed meats, lots of veggies, and eggs are a healthy low carb. Glad to hear that you are doing it healthy this time! This time make healthy low carb the normal.

Hey!
I've done low carb before and started losing tons of weight. My family went back to eating unhealthy, and I decided to go overboard with my low carb. At 10-20 carbs a day, and working out I was miserable. The headaches got so bad all I did was sleep most of the time. Needless to say I went back to normal eating and gained it all back plus more. Now I'm giving it another go (in a healthier manner), and measuring myself instead of weighing. Hope everyone has a great Thursday! Good Luck!

HI! I've been doing lowi-ish carb for a long time, but I've been away from SP and I think I need the daily accountability, so I'm back. I ate too much deli the first few days back, and I actually GAINED weight. All water, from the salt. I know. But today I had my first ever Whoosh! I lost about 4lbs in one day. I'm in ketosis every day, so I'm not really worried about it. If I don't eat carbs, the weight will come off. Gotta go walk the dogs. That's about all my knees and back are up to, and that's another reason I needed to come back and use the trackers. I don't like the way I look or the way I feel, and I'm the only one who can do anything about it. Right?

If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got.

Thanks for the kind welcome. Right now I'm pretty much making up my own plan but I'm reading a number of different low carb books to determine what will work best for me.

I'm rejoining...
Hi, I'm Vicki. I live in Titusville, Fl. I'm 55 years old and 100 lbs over weight. I've been trying for over a year to get my weight down and all I've done is yo-yo back and forth. So I've started a low carb plan like I did back in the 80's ( I lost 105 lbs in 13 months and kept it off for 18 years), and I'm hoping to get the weight back off over the course of the next 2 years. I'm not nearly as active as I used to be so I know the weight won't come off as fast as it did back then. Plus I've gone into full menopause so my body tends to have a mind of it's own. I lose motivation easily so I'm hoping the team will help keep me motivated to stay on track. Thanks for having me.

I prefer Atkins, but it doesn't allow milk or grains. Once you find you CLL (your personal carb threshold while still losing weight), then you may be able to raise the carbs and continue to lose. Once at your goal weight then you spend the next month learning how to maintain it (Phase 3). This is the phase where you can add whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, and quinoa.

I did not find milk addressed in the Quick Start Guide, but I am assuming that you can have it in Phase 4 Life Time maintenance as long as you stay in your ACE (your threshold for carb consumption). Have you tried the milk substitutes? Almond or soy?

I will clearify with my doctor on Monday. There are some veggies I just do not understand why they do not allow. I like working with the nutritionist, but I am thinking of changing to Atkins which allows so many more alternatives. I miss using milk and some of the allowable grains.

Thank you, you always seem to be there when I need a good word.

Love,

Did they explain why you can't eat green veggies? Here is an article on the subject. It is foods rich in vitamin K that you should avoid but eating in small amounts should be OK. ( Kale, Spinach, Brussels sprouts, Parsley, Collard greens, Mustard greens, Chard, Green tea) I assume they thought saying green veggies would be simpler. But be sure to take the advice of your doctor or nutritionist.

I am curious as to why you can't have squash? Is it just the winter varieties? Summer squash is vary low carb ... so I don't understand?

Help! I need ideas of what to eat following surgery. I am having a full hip replacement next week. I went to pre-surgery class and during the class the nurse said that those of us who will be on cumadim (a blood thinner) should not eat green veggies.

I became very concerned because that is all I eat except for eggs, meat, fish, and 1 fruit a day.

What can I eat that is low carb?

I have an e-mail into my nutritionist about this. By the way, on my program, I cannot eat carrots, corn, squash, so what is left except cauliflour.

Hi everyone. I'm 44 years old and have been struggling unsuccessfully with my weight for all of my adult life. In the last year I have managed to halt the gain by cutting fructose from my diet and have lost a few kilos. I need to make a lot more progress though so for the last few weeks I have been restricting carbs and.....almost scared to say this...there seems to be a little progress in the right direction!! Joining this team to keep my self on track and hopefully pick up a few tips to living low carb.

emoticon New members. It's great to have you here.

Xanadurealm is the one to go to for low carb planning. She's very good at it, too.

I'm more of a tech geek and I can help you with any questions you have regarding the site.

One thing I will suggest is to go to the Healthy Lifestyle tab, then click on nutrition and then special needs. There are several articles there for dibetic lifestyles, how to plan meals, what to eat, etc.

SparkPeople seems to think we should all eat lots of carbs, and for some, this is probably great advise, but for those of us that can no longer eat fruist and veggies because of the carb count, it changes things a lot.

One thing I will suggest is to remember to eat your protein, which is dairy and meat. I recently had a diabetes instructor tell me that every time I eat a carb, I should eat some protein with it. The protein helps keep the blood sugar more level so there are no spikes.

However, I have also been told recently that they (scientists) don't think that is actually true. I made sense to me and I also discovered for myself, that I wasn't eating enough protein, now I'm too much, but I'm working on it.

The thing I question is, who is saying it doesn't work and why? My mom stopped taking a med she was on because she heard on the TV that it wasn't what it was cranked up to be. When the doctor found out, she was in the emergency room and he was trying to figure out what was wrong with her. So now I'm very skeptical on articles having to do with turning people away from long held meaning. If it proves to be true, that's different. But it makes me wonder why they come out with it so soon, before it's really proven. What do they have to gain?

Anyway, welcome and enjoy the team. emoticon

Hi everyone! I'm attempting to live a low carb lifestyle due to being diabetic and insulin resistant. I've blown both my knees from the years of excess weight and am looking at knee replacements in the near future. Following even a low calorie diet full of carbs leads to no weight loss, so I know low-carbing is the way I need to go. The transition is difficult for me but one that I am going to continue to pursue! Any suggestions are always welcomed!!

Evening all, I am Pattie and I am new to Spark People and already love it. I have lost 59 pounds just eliminating flour & sugar from my diet which I started 8/5/2010, but hit a plateau this March. I now decided to do a more structured program (Dukan) which will help me kick start the last phase of my journey. I only foresee giving up coffee with cream as an issue.....lol but tonight I had my first cup of the day with skim milk. Not bad at all !!! emoticon for me its about staying positive. Thanks for the warm welcome, and best of luck to the group.

Hello every one! my name is carolyn I am 72 years old ,live in Florida with my DH and 2 dogs.I have been battling with weight problems since 1980"s , it's been a yoyo existence. I recently found out I am diabetic. I just had eye surgery ( cataract surgery)and am on my 3 week of healing for that eye. pretty soon I will have the other eye done. also we are packing a whole house hold of things to move to arkansas where we have 5 acres.
were we are now is my mom's house, I took care of her for 3 years then she had to go to a nursing home,( she had dementia and parkingson's), she was in the nursing home for 3 years, she died last december. and now we are going to move to arkansas where we want to spend our retirement days.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the warm welcome to the team. I am excited to learn as much as I can from all of you. I have been dieting since I was 5 years old. My highest weight was 10 years ago at 370+ i am pretty sure it was higher than 370, but that is where the scale topped out. Currently, I am at the lowest weight I ever remember seeing on the scale on the scale 181 (I remember being 185 at my 7th grade PE weigh-in). Through the journey of getting the weight off and keeping it off (and all the yo-yoing before, after, and in between) I have learned 2 things.
1. The only way for me is to live a low carb lifestyle. The minute carb-creep begins so does weight gain.
2. I need the empathy, understanding, motivation, and knowlege I get from other people on the same journey. Sharing my thoughts and asking questions, while learning as much as I can from all of you will keep me from re-gaining the weight.

Be sure to ask your questions on Low Carb Lifestyle to Xanaduerealm. She has the best answers. But I understand your struggles as I have them too. I just did a major shift in my lifestyle and I get to eat more - which is now difficult to change my mind from only eating 30 carbs a meal to more. But I don't think it will take long for my mind to readjust. I feel better and I'm not nearly where I need to be but I'm ahead of what I was so I'm starting to lose weight again and just feeling better all the way around.

Have a Sparkling one!

emoticon New member FUEGANETSAH to the team. We are a growing team so feel free to just jump in anywhere and explore the team page. Xanadurealm is the one to ask nutrition questions of as she has the answers and is very good at it. I am more of a tech geek and I can tell you how to find something or how to change your settings for the site. Feel free to suggest changes to the team page, too. We have a few games going on, but you can add games if you think of one that we might all like.

Have a Sparkling Day! Ghost! emoticon emoticon

Welcome to new member, WAYOFLIFE4. Check out the team and enjoy the various threads. Xanadurealm is great in the nutrition department so if you have questions regarding nutritian, what food is in or out, etc., she is the one to run to. I'm a tech geek in comparouson so if you have questions on how to find something on the sight or change something on your page, I can help you there.

Make friends, join teams, use the threads and the message boards, track your food, track your fitness and you're on your way. Check out Healthy Lifestyles/Spark Diet if you haven't seen it yet. There's all kinds of info on how to get started and more.

Welcome new member, CHROMEQUEEN1. Feel free to explore the team page and if you have questions on nutrition, Xanaduerealm is the best one to ask those kinds of questions to. I'm more of the tech geek and can help you find your way around the website.

Your SparkPage is automatically set for private, which is fine, but it means you will not be able to get team SparkGoodies, or SparkGoodies from any of your friends. It keeps you from getting other things too so if you want the SparkGoodies, you'll want to change the settings on your page.

Here is what you can do to look at and decide if you want to make the changes.

Go to your start page. On the upper, left corner is the Welcome area. Just under it is a smaller line that says; ACCOUNT/EMAIL PREFERENCES. Click on that. A new window pops up. Click on Account and then scroll down about half way and click yes on the SPARKPEOPLE ALERT NOTIFICATIONS. Back to the top and click on Spark Teams. A new window appears. Find the team and then click on DISPLAY ON SPARK PAGE, SHOW ON TEAM MAP, and TEAM SPARK MAIL. This will make your page, and you, more accessable to the team and you will be able to get the SparkGoodies you are given or earned. This team gives SparkGoodies to the 5 highest members that make it for SparkPoints and Fitness Minutes each week.

So enjoy the team and let us know if you have questions or need help finding something.

Have a sparkling day!
