Pelagic,

Glad you enjoyed it...I got such a kick out of it when I first saw it, too!

Being from Illinois, I've followed President Obama's career from the early days and have always been impressed by him. His values, demeanor, his moderate approach and attempts to reach across the isle make the Republicans look like silly, selfish children by comparison. I find it telling that so many in your country, as well as Ireland and Britain are also inspired by the man and his words.

Irish has the bragging rights and always keeps up abreast of the news from Ireland. I'm a Greek ( by descent) and I wish I could claim Obama. I'm very happy he is our President.

Little brag here -- County Offaly, where his family is from, is where half of my family is from! (The other half is from Armagh in Northern Ireland).

That is a fabulous ballad, CoachPenny! I hadn't seen that before and it tickled me to death. I followed his visit to Ireland closely - one of my great cronies is a Dublin journalist who covers politics, and he kept me in touch with how the visit went when the Obamas went to Ireland (and a photo of himself with Obama that I think was actually taken in the US when the Irish Prime Minister visited - he was part of the entourage). The Irish I've spoken to love him - I remember sitting in a pub before the 2008 elections with the journo and one of his mates, who was a visiting professor at an American university...they were terribly enthusiastic about the prospect of his election. The day he won I sent an emotional email to the journo and he sent an even more emotional one back...I still have it somewhere, as it had me in tears. He loves American history as well, and he found it such an affirmation of all the best in your country.

It might seem a little odd for an Australian-English girl with an Irish background to ask to join you all in a support for President Obama...I do have a great many US links, though. My parents met when both were working in the US, we lived there for three years as a kiddie and spent a further three years in the American School System at a US school in Asia. I've often travelled back there, have a profound admiration for what the US is at its best (my 9th birthday cake was shaped as Abraham Lincoln), and am a fan of Obama as the type of leader we need more of in the world.

Going into the last election, Australia was second only to France in our overwhelming support for Obama as the preferred US president. In 2008 my closest friend and I hosted a party on polling day and watched the results come in - some people joined us in taking the day off work to watch it all unfold. And then we did it again last year.

I have a background in politics myself - I worked for four years as a political adviser and speechwriter down here, so I tend to pay close attention to international politics. Hope you don't mind me joining you, and I promise not to be presumptious and try to tell Americans what they should do in their own internal governance!
