Hi Jules, thanks for the welcome. I lived in Australia for many years, mostly around Brisbane and have drowned many many lavender plants in my time. I'm here in Sacramento, CA where lavender is well suited to growing so this year I'm going to plant quite a few varieties.
I usually stick to veggies but I think a few flowers would be beautiful and worth the space.
i've been on spark this time for a few months now and have been making great progress by not eating any refined sugar including alcohol. Also, I've been eating lots of fresh produce from my backyard garden in the 'burbs.
I am about to clean up some of the beds in preparation for fall planting. The front yard is going to get some perennial flowers like echinacia, hollyhocks, foxgloves, delphiniums and lavender. I picked up some punnets of seedlings today and now think I probably bought them a month too early.
Usually I stick to edibles but this is a semi shady front yard and I had some success with growing in a straw bale this summer so I might get a few more of those to put on the concrete in my backyard where all the good sun is.
I look forward to hearing about all our gardening activities too.
I did spinach for the first time this year, planting starter plants in April. I've been harvesting the leaves for weeks now. The plant will start to get tall if you harvest leaves from the outside first, working your way inwards (which I'm told is the way to do it.)

Welcome to the Team! I know about the gardening high, I was able to start cutting my leaf lettuce for salads this week. So far that is all I can harvest but we have a local farmers' market every Saturday and Wednesday that is almost as good as growing your own.

Hi everyone! :) I'm Ashley. I'm a 24-year-old newlywed in Virginia. I joined SparkPeople this weekend after a couple of weeks of working out with a friend and blindly trying to modify my eating habits! I've gained some weight since getting married last summer and I really just want to be fit and healthy.
Aside from sparking, I'm a nanny for a local family and I work with my local Humane Society and their homeless cats! :)
This is my very first year gardening. I'm partially making it up as I go along, and the rest of it is just endless research on the Internet. I live in a basement apartment so all my plants are in containers! I actually harvested my first carrots today and I kind of have a gardening high about them. They're perfect. I'm also growing broccoli, spinach, bush beans, and the ever-popular tomatoes. I also have herbs and flowers going, and I grew them all from seed (except the tomatoes)!
