Hi all,

I'm new to the team. I recently decided to add some international cuisines to my diet, partly because I enjoy eating various ethnic foods and partly because I think it's a great opportunity to get to know a lot of new flavors and a great way to keep me focused on tracking my food because I tend to lose focus if I get bored - and my diet has been pretty boring up until now.

Next week, because this week has been planned and tracked already, I will be trying for the first time Estonian Cabbage and Mince Stew. Sounds yummy! It will be a great way to kick off my "Tour de Goulash."

So glad to have you here, Phyllis! I hope that you do enjoy the East Indian Curry Chicken as much as our family has for years. Your cookbooks sound interesting and I love cookbooks! Kind of an addiction of mine I'm afraid! My husband teases me about my collection! I know that I look through them alot more than I'll ever cook them, but it sure is fun and good to get new ideas that are so yummy instead of the same old, same old! ha! I know that you'll love this team too!

I'm starting my ticker over with going low carb.

Hi, I am new, name is Phyllis. I love ALL ethnic foods. My latest cooking venture is East Indian cuisine. I just ordered 3 new cookbooks. I sat Saturday and read them til my eyes went blurry!! 7 hours reading. In the three cookbooks there are about 2400 recipes, more than I will ever use. Not only good recipes, known to be very authentic, but has also lots of reading about the different areas and the different recipes based on what foods are available for their particular area, but also religious differences in the foods they eat. I love going to ALL different culture's restaurants. BUT, I think I will like cooking authentic recipes as I know that many restaurants are somewhat Americanized menu's and recipes. I owned a Mexican Restaurant for ten years in Lake Isabella California. I am now retired and living in Arizona, where it is very HOT!!

I saw the East Indian Chicken Curry recipe, I plan on trying that one this weekend. emoticon THANK YOU TO ALL WHO TAKE THE TIME TO POST RECIPES.

Phyllis
It turns out that an eerie type of chaos can lurk just behind a facade of order - and yet, deep inside the chaos lurks an even eerier type of order.

Welcome aboard Kathy! It would be so neat if you could share some of your favorite recipes that you revised. I love it when people to that because it really gets to be even more fun! I shared East Indian Chicken on the recipe board which we love. Good luck to you!

Hi Karen! Welcome! and welcome everybody! emoticon emoticon I love ethnic foods too, girl! Woo Hoo! I have some German in me also, plus Irish and American Indian. I have worked in doctor's offices most of my life, but I did work at a Bennihanna's in Florida as a server for a year, and really got into ethnic foods. I met so many people from around the world, and I find the different cultures fascinating! I love learning new recipes and trying new things. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi, I'm Karen and I just joined this team. I love ethnic foods! I'm half German, so I grew up with alot of German food. My husband and I adopted our two children from India years ago, so I've learned to cook Indian food too, although with quite an American twist! I'm looking forward to learning new recipes.

I'm new to the team, my name is Kate and I'm a stay-at-home wife who is a full-time cook! My husband is Korean, so I make lots of Korean food, but I'm part Italian and can cook pretty decent Italian or Mediterranean food. I've been branching out into Chinese cuisine lately, but gosh is it complicated. Other than that, I make a lot of Turkish, Indian, and Mexican food in the summer. I'm always on the lookout for new recipes or tips on how to improve my skills.

Also, changing over to eating almost entirely Korean food has been the main reason I've lost 20 lbs! Yay fermented foods and soups :)

Good afternoon. My name is Izandro and I enjoy cooking all sorts of cuisines. I generally cook Mexican and Spanish foods on a daily basis, so if anyone needs any tips, pointers or recipes, I'll be more than happy to share. Although, I have mastered Hispanic foods, I find that I am getting a little bored with eating the same things over and over. I would really like to gather some recipes for a variety of cuisines. I especially love Indian food and spicy dishes. I am a vegetarian, but I can make any meat dish into a vegetarian variation.

I'm a newbie to this team. I love cooking different foods and thought this team would be perfect for me. Going up on fried foods is not healthy but all I know. My husband is Korean and I'm trying to learn to cook Korean meals to impress my mother-in-law. Of course I could never cook as good as his mom, but I did want to come close. I did find that Korean dishes are loaded with salt, but with alot of veggies. Kimchi alone can add up the salt intake. I'm looking for anyone that may have some healthy alternatives. I also have a 2 year old picky eater. Chicken and rice is all he eat.

Hi there! I'm Hue and I'm from Vietnam, I was adopted by an italian mom and german dad. So unfortunately I don't cook alot of asian dishes but love to eat them and learn how. So throw anything my way that might have the wonderful flavors of, sweet, salty, sour, and heat!

Hi! New to this team...I love to cook and enjoy making everything from the standard "American" classics (meatloaf, roast chicken, mac & cheese), Mexican, Indian, Thai, Hungarian...I'll try anything. Glad to be among other ethnic foodies.

Another Newbie here and I love all the different groups you can join....I love to cook and since I have six kids..I do a lot of cooking. I also cook my own ethnic food which is filipino. The bad part of eating filipino food is all the rice that goes with most of the dishes. You always eat more than one cup of rice which is not good for you.

Keep on working hard mentally and physically!!!

Stay with my goal!

Finish what I started!!

Hi all,

Well now how does a Heinze 57 kinda person from the midwest end up cooking lots of Persian food? Marry a Persian guy!My hubby and I have been married for 26 years now. We have a lovely daughter Shireen, who just happens to be severly autistic. She was born with water on the brain and that caused her problems. She also has cerebal palsy and seizure disorder. She will never live independly, but she is a beautiful person (physically and spiritually) and a blessing in my life. I had a gastric bypass on July 2, 2010 and now have lost 70 lbs, including 10 prior to the surgery. I am now struggling with using "my pouch", and getting the most from my surgery. I need more exercise, but stauchly resist it in any form. I also need to not drink fluids for half an hour after I eat. It washes the food out of my stomach and then I will not feel full. The whole point in having the surgery is to not feel hungry so you can lose weight.

Anyway I do love to cook, just made some Mousaka last week and posted the recipe on Spark Recipes. It turned out yummy and low in carbs so its good for my blood sugar.

I do fix lots of Persian food, but tend to modify the orginal recipes to keep the carbs low. I don't eat rice now as it will "stick" in my stomach, but manage to do OK without it. Persian food is very healthy. They use lots of things we think of as herbs as vegetables. I make a sour plum soup and use 2 cups of dried mint, celantro, chives and parsley in it. Talk about flavorful! Anyway I'm looking forward to sharing my experience and recipes and getting to know difference ethnic foods too. I have a friend who married a Ghanian gentleman and she taught me to make some West African foods. She lived in Ghana for several years and her mother-in-law taught her how to cook. (She always laughted and said her mother-in-law didn't know she couldn't cook anything. So I have some experience preparing Jaloff Rice and Peanutbutter Soup. I'm looking forward to 'meeting' you all.

Hey all! Just getting started on SP, and I LOVE to cook... we make almost all of our meals from scratch, sometimes with a little help for sides and whatnot. Indian curry is a favorite, we haven't made Vietnamese pho yet, but I saw a link to a recipe here last night that I'd like to try sometime, we love pho. I'm allergic to jalapenos so we make a lot of our own Mexican food too, I'm looking forward to learning some lower-fat versions of a lot of stuff!

Note to self: Please be patient with me, God isn't finished with me yet.

hi all! I and my husband (franklyamused) are vegans who love cooking, especially indian foods. we love to find new recipes and often convert non-vegetarian or vegan foods, meaning that there are few limits! I grew up in a number of countries so learned very early to enjoy many different cuisines, and the best whole-food ingredients. I feel that having to cut calories and fat (and sodium) doesn't mean that we can't enjoy the best international cuisine.

Another newbie checking in!

Coming from England and growing up a vegetarian, I LOVE ethnic food. And now that I'm dieting I appreciate spices and flavourings so much more.

Looking forward to sharing recipes, ideas, and techniques, and maybe meeting new people!

Hi all - I am new to Spark people and the team. I love to travel and try ethnic foods in their natural habitates, but life does not allow me to do that all the time, so I recreate memories of places I have been and dream of places I still want to go through my cooking. I am excited to learn how to make some of the ethnic foods I love more healthfully and learn how to make some new dishes.

Happy eating!

Hey everyone!
Please forgive me if I don't seem to be making much sense. Its just about 10:30am and as John Walker of "The Diet Hacker" once said, "people like me shouldn't consider touching a computer right after getting up-operating complicated machinery when possessed of the cognitive powers of a sea slug and the disposition of a polar bear with a toothache is most unwise." I am just not a morning person!

I just started with SP, just about a month ago and I am learning and trying various new recipes. I just recently purchased a bamboo steamer. I've never used one before and have no idea what to do with it. I am hoping to find some sort of guidance in using this steamer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and I look forward to trying all kinds of new recipes you all might share.

Leanne

Thank you! very excited to find an Ehnic Food Forum, Puertorrican Cuisine is so much a part of my life that I was so scared I would have to let it go while on my journey to a healthier weight! Hopefully I can find some great recipes that won't hurt my diet.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the team. I've collected International cookbooks over the years and have always been interested in ethnic cooking. Now looking for healthier alternatives to the old favs. My husband and I very seldom eat out because we live in a small town with few dining choices and prefer to make our own meals. Looking forward to sharing recipes.

Hi, ya'll. Hey Christie love the recipes you have posted.

My favorite is Mexican and Italian with Chinese on the side. Not much choice in this area other than these.

Looking forward to getting new recipes and ideas.

Hi everyone! I'm so glad I stumbled onto this team. I love trying ethnic foods, as well as trying my hand at cooking them. I most enjoy Indian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern.

I've been a member of SP for about 3 years but, unfortunately, I'm an "on again and off again" sparker. Hopefully this time I'll stay on!

Hi all!

I'm new to this forum, but LOVE foods from all cultures! It's harder to find recipes that represent different ethnicities and are tasty and low cal. I'm hoping to find more recipes to use.

Hello,
I just joined and I wanted to briefly introduce myself.
I'm just a girl with an inordinate love of all things spicy and other. I'm partial to foods from Mexico, India, Russia (even though it's not so much on the spicy) South America and the Middle East.

I look forward to getting to know you all!

I AM SORRY YOU ARE THERE ALL ALONE. IT IS TOO BAD THAT YOU DON'T HAVE FAMILY TO LIVE WITH TO HELP YOU.
I REALLY LOVE ALL FOOD UNFORTUNATLY BUT I LIKE SPICY FOOD A LOT. tOMORROW I THINK I AM GOING TO DECIDE WHAT BAKED GOODS I AM GOING TO MAKE FOR CHRISTMAS.
I AM NOT MUCH OF A BAKER. ALTHOUGH I HAVE MADE MANY CAKES AND DECORATED THEM WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS LITTLE.

Hi Deanne and Christie,
The soup was and is delish. I wish I could give you some as I made a big pot and it is only the two of us here and my Mother to eat it.
Deanne, I am so sorry for your bad experience. If you would like to talk about it here or privatly you have my ear and shoulder. Hugs.
I would love the recipe. I have one so don't go crazy but I would like to see if yours is different. Here it is:Title: Borscht
Keys: Soups Stews Russian Russia
Yield: 6

Ingredients:

10 cup canned beef broth
1 lb meaty cross-cut bone-in beef shank slice
1 lrg onion quartered
4 lrg beets peeled, chopped
4 med carrots peeled, chopped
1 x russet potato - (12 to 14 oz) peeled, and
cut into 1/2" pieces
2 cup thinly-sliced savoy cabbage
3/4 cup chopped fresh dill
Salt to taste
Freshly-ground black pepper to taste
3 tbl red wine vinegar
1 cup plain nonfat yogurt

Method:
Bring 6 cups broth, beef shank, and onion to boil in large pot. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until meat is tender, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Transfer meat to work surface; trim fat, sinew and bone and discard. Chop meat; cover and chill. Cool broth slightly. Chill uncovered in pot until cold, at least 4 hours and up to 1 day.

Spoon fat from top of chilled broth and discard. Add remaining 4 cups canned broth, beets, carrots, and potato; bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Stir in cabbage and 1/2 cup dill; cook until tender, about 15 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper. Stir in vinegar. Ladle soup into bowls. Top with yogurt and remaining 1/4 cup dill.

This recipe yields 6 servings.

Comments: This soup is from Russia and Poland.

Hi Everyone, I love all types of food from many cultures. I am going to make a Portuguese Soup tomorrow. I have also been longing for Borcht. I have never made it but had some that was delish. The one I had was made for a woman from the Ukraine and it did have meat and cream in it. It was yummy.
Nice meeting you all. Hugs, Judy emoticon

That explains things a bit, I did not get here until October and asked the coach if I could take over since the team was not very active and had no active leader. If you would like to be the leader I could set it up for you.

I'm sorry, but I do not know who David is, I guess many of those who where here prior just haven't been active because the team was not. The ones I talk to now are basically new with the exception of a couple.

I did check out some of the recipes here, if you want to me to copy and paste them to the recipe forum I can do that or you can if you like.

Yeah I was the one kind of taking over but never the leader I guess it was running itself.

I was looking for David is he still around I have alot of recipes on this team just ask them look around they can be modified.

I have a blog that explains what had happen, and I will explain later everything once I can get my brain and fingers to work together again.

without one or the other trying to take over the other.

Hard to explain not really.

( I left in June).

Hi Deanne,

Welcome back! I am happy to know that you are doing better.

Yes I am the new leader, I took over a couple of months ago.

I do not hold you being a chef against you and you are not being rude either, I'd be asking a lot of questions too.

I am not sure how long you have been gone, but as you may have noticed things have changed a bit. If you need help please let me know.

All the Best to you.

Hello,

are you the new leader????

I don't understand I was gone for awhile a long while
If I sound a little abrupt it is because I am a chef please don't hold that against me.

I am lost.

I come back from a long illness and everyone I know is gone. and there is a bunch of new people and I have not had time to read everyones posts so I am just getting myself famalier with everything, and everyone. am nottrying to rude or stand offish so please do not take me the wrong way.

Hello My Friend,

Welcome to the Team!

It is great to have you with us.

I created this team for those who love ethnic foods and cooking them. I know if I could I would eat Chinese fried rice every day.

We will share delcious recipes and even learn how to cook them.

Of course we will also learn some nutrition and fitness tips to help us along the way.

Remember, together we can beat this battle.

If you are new to the Sparkpeople teams, here are a few tips:

There are 4 forums to the team that may contain 3 topics, called sticky topics that always stay at the top. To view all messages beyond the sticky's click on the title of that forum.

If you wish to post to the forum, simply click add new topic. Your message will be the first one below the sticky topics. They are not visible on the main team page when there are 3 sticky's, but if email notifications are sent all will be notified of your post.

The forums are:

1. General Discussion
This forum is of course for general discussion and chat.

2. Introduce Yourself
This forum is of course for introducing yourself, but I also added a topic for asking questions.

3. Fun & Challenges:
This forum is for the weekly challenges that I will post as well as games or other fun stuff to keep the team active.

4. Recipe Box
This forum is for sharing our favorite recipes. Feel free to add your favorite as well.

I want to wish you well on your journey and if I can do anything to help you along please let me know.

All the Best!
Christie
