Hello everyone! My name is Kathy. I am 31 years old and I have type 2 diabetes. I found out I was diabetic at 28 years old. I found out I was diabetic because I had been sick for about 3 months. I had lost over 30 pounds in that time and I just couldn't keep anything down. I was severely dehydrated and very weak. I went to the hospital and they found out my blood sugar was 678. I was in diabetic ketoacidosis. The admitted me into the hospital and put me on an insulin drip and also daily insulin shots. Lots and lots of fluid and when I felt a little better I got to get up and get some walking in. I was there for 4 days. I was so ready to go home. I just didn't want to even think about hospitals anymore but I was also very determined to get my act together and get this mess taken care of. I was to young to have a chronic illness and I wasn't going to let it beat me. So I started exercising and watching my diet. I wasn't taking any meds at the time and my blood sugar was staying about 95 or so. I was doing really good right? Well fast forward a year and I start having horrible pains in my stomach. I had gained about 50 pounds and I was just miserable. Well I thought maybe it had to do with my kidney and since I only have one I was very nervous and so I went to the hospital. They did a CT Scan on me and found a tumor in my stomach roughly the size of a basketball. Also they checked my sugar and it was about 375. I was put on metformin and had to have surgery to remove my tumor. Well I go back and for to multiple doctors over the course of about 6 months and they run all kinds of test and they think I have cancer but the only way to know for sure is to have the tumor removed and do a biopsy! Well I was uninsured and couldn't pay for surgery so I had to find some help. Finally found a program to help me and had the tumor removed. NO CANCER thank you god. I was still on metformin at the time but I noticed it really wasn't helping after the surgery. My sugars while in the hospital were staying about 350 but they didn't give me any meds because they were reacting with the dyes they put in me for the surgery. Anyways so I get out of the hospital and continue the metformin. I go to my regular doctor and he does and a1c and it comes back 8.8 I was so upset because I don't want to be sick. I did everything I could to keep my sugar levels as low as I could. I talked to my doctor about metformin just not working for me. He said ok we will change it and see if we can find something that will work for you! He put me on Amaryl (glimeperide) 2mg a day. Januvia 100mg a day! I check my blood sugar obsessively and it was actually staying in a pretty good range. 85-135 range. I go in the beginning of this month and have another a1c test done and it was 5.8 I honestly couldn't be happier. So I guess those meds are working for me. I want him to up the Amaryl to 4mg. I will ask him when I see him again. Oh and also I went to the eye doctor the other day and found I have no problems with my eyes due to diabetes. I am always researching diabetes and trying to make myself healthier!

hello!
I'm lisa type 2 for the past 7 or so years. I am the worst diabetic ever. Let me be frank, I have not seen my dr in 18 months. I have taken my self off my meds time and time again and probably in the last 7 years, the longest I have been on them at one time is 2 mayyyyyybe 3 months. I usually fall of the wagon all together in the summer. I have switched insurances 3x in the past 2 years, so that means new drs. each time and this last time I just said forget it. I know this is the worst possible thing I could be doing because 1- its not healthy or safe, and 2 I also have a pituitary adenoma. So with out the guidance of my endocrinologist I have been winging it. I am in the process (mentally anyway) of finding a new dr. Ive been working out and trying to get healthy, so I don't think (however not 100% sure) im in danger danger danger, but that is still no excuse, I do need to get on track. so that's me in a nutshell

Hello all,

Momma gave me the worst guilt trip and I went to the doctor's for issues I've dealt with (we lost my brother earlier in the year - she told me she feared losing another child). I'm only 33, but two of my brothers have diabetes. Doc says I'm most certainly hypoglycemic, which means pre-diabetes. Which means it's testing time! I've done blood work. Next, I have a 5-hour glucose test scheduled this upcoming week...it's a process. I've been working on figuring things out (not an easy feat). I was told to eat every 2-3 hours...try to keep that under 2,000 calories, let alone 1,200 to 1,500. I'm just aiming for under 2,000 at this point - the first day was 3,000 calories and it was all very healthy foods. I get so weak if I try to eat under 1,800 calories (talk about challenges!).

I've always been the family's resident health-freak, so it really upset me to learn I'm pre-diabetic because...well, I was trying to prevent it. I'm the youngest, I can watch my siblings and know what's in store for me...and avoid it. Apparently not. I'm only 33!!

I'm trying to exercise, but find I have issues with migraines after exercise, feet falling asleep during exercise, and aching horribly for days after a 20 minute workout. I'm keeping records because it's data I'm taking with me to the doc when I see her this upcoming Friday (I handed her a page long list of symptoms my first visit, which she kept). I'm tracking food and affects of foods that I can share with her too.

So, I am a complete newbie at this! At least I got past the stage of being upset (and crying and depressed) and onto the stage trying to do something. As my husband told me, "If anyone can beat this, it's you. You're too stubborn to give in to anything."

"We have met the enemy - and it is us."

The only weaknesses we have are the ones we allow ourselves to have.

Hi my name is Debbie. I have type 2 diabetes for about 7 years or so. I weigh 304 pounds and do to my weight and it is on my moms side of the family. I hope to lose weight and get off the meds with the support I'm looking for.
I have one wonderful daughter who just turned 21 and a step daughter 30 years old. Also a step son that has past on do to health problems at the age of 20. Diabetic I believe and didn't know it and had a weight problem also.
I have been drinking green drinks and a protein for breakfast and lunch for a week about. I eat a good size salad with my dinner also. If I want a snack I drink my green drink. I know I can't stay on that all the time but I'm not able to exercise for to long with my disk injury. I had both my hips replace in Jan. and the other in May of last year. Exercise is getting better and this week I start PT to do back exercises without injuring myself more.

Hello, I'm a type 1 diabetic; diagnosed November 26 1999. My control sort of slacked over the last few years. I'm trying to lose weight I gained in the last three years and get back to a healthy, active lifestyle.
My four year old daughter has been recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes also; diagnosed less than a month ago!
There's no history of diabetes in my family or my husbands family.

I look forward to being active in this team and meeting other type 1s and getting to know everyone emoticon

Hi, I'm Sandra from New Jersey (please don't call me Sandy!). I finally went to an endocrinologist yesterday and she told me I am a diabetic after seeing my numbers on my blood work. She is giving me 3 months to get it under control with just diet and exercise! I am a young 64 years old retired teacher and am looking for support and sharing. emoticon

Hi there, emoticon

My name is Valerie. I was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2005. I am still controlling it with diet and Metformin once a day. My A1C has been below 6 and my blood sugar has been between 90 and 150. If I have something super sweet (I have a sweet tooth sometimes) I pay the price, so I try not to do that. I have really high Triglycerides and really need to get a handle on my carb intake. I take way too many medicines and it is time to do something about it.

I've been married to Kevin for 16 years and have 2 kids. My son is 20 and my daughter just turned 14. I live in Indiana.

My husband and I joined Spark People on March 4 after he went to the doctor and his weight was pushing 300. We decided it was time to do something about our fluffiness. Our daughter joined Spark Teens and we started going to a new gym (we had been going to another one but you could never get on the equipment, so we found one that you can). Yay Planet Fitness!

I am addicted to the treadmill and Kevin and Clara are addicted to the bikes.

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed T2 in March this year. Am doing diet only, no medications.

I was offered meds but refused as wanted to try diet only. I got a meter and test strips and now know from endless testing that the way forward to really cut down my carb intake.

I am 52, trying to lose weight and live in England. I have been a member of sparkpeople for years but have been toying with my weight and decided its time to get a grip.

Am looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hello everyone
I'm type 2 diabetic using 5 tabs 500mg metformine a day...

i just got back ftom the chemist with my sugar meter so i'm gonna start all my teams again from first week as i got waylayed with severe cramps and lost the motivation to track.. i have been exercising but only occasionally and not really tracking.. I miss it because it really helps with watching what and how much i eat and for me a diabetic its really useful as SP give suggestions to what food is better for me and the proportions too... its th first time on a site and first time tracking.. i feel lucky that i found SP first....................

i saved money to buy this meter (on sale)with 50 strips as it was cheaper than buying th 50 strips onlyfor my other meter, so ive invested in it so i can now find out how the food is affecting my blood sugar..

welcome to all newcomers i started in february i did lose 5 kilo's...... now im starting over again.. so im gonna read all the instructions for the meter and then i'll either start tomorrow or friday...
good luck all with your goals

Hiya CM,
I dont see a reply to you on here but maybe you got one in another place??
The headaches come from when you have a hypo there are about 5 types of hypo's.....
it comes when you have low sugar, which for a diabetic is not good..
I have had alot of hypo's.. they started with headaches, dizziness, feeling unbalanced..
take a glucose tab or spoon of honey etc..

I also didnot know what they were until i saw in a mag by the chemist a piece about hypo's
( they call it that here in holland, but they do mention them in the diabetic info here on SP it has a longer name,)...
when i joined SP in februari after 2 weeks i had less hypo's as i was trying hard to get my diet correct on the tracker....
I hope they are less with you..
I thought ohh it's cus i take alot of metmorfine 5 tabs a day.. but my nurse tells me no it don't come from that..

The diet and exercise on the 8 weeks diabetic challenge and advice on the tracker has really helped me.. even though i dont get it precise as i cannot get the same food here i follow it aprox.. and it works...I'm happy to be here on SP as i feel so much better physically....
(but i have trouble with to get the scales to budge haha... )
SP has become my dietrician...
I've been off for 2 an a half weeks cus i got severe cramps an cld not exercise.. so i decided not to track till i got a bit better..
I joined an extra 2 teams for diabetics cus i don't get enough feedback in other teams...and i often have questions.. so here i am....
I'll officially introduce myself in another post as i wanted to answer yours as i don't see an answer for you
I hope it helps..
Tisha

I am glad I read your story. I too have let myself get way out of control for this last year. Ever since my diagnosis with Type II diabetes in 1998 I have managed to keep my A1C at 6 and under. My last testing was in Dec 2011 and I knew it would be bad but when I was told it was 8.7, to say the lest, my jaw dropped. I understood why I felt so crummy. I had even stopped testing on a daily basis. I was and continue to be so frustrated with myself for what I have done to me. This was a real wake up call for me. All of my numbers were horrible. I realized I did this and it is up to me to correct it. I have been working very hard for the last month, since the bad news came, to eat right and exercise when I can. I was also put back on injected insulin besides taking Glyburide-metformin. The insulin I was prescribed makes me feel full all the time and has definitely lowered my blood sugar from an average of 186 to 90 again. The only problem was in the first two weeks of taking this insulin it made me sick to my stomach and I even had a few days of throwing up. I have now adjusted to the insulin and no more feeling sick but I continue to feel full all the time. Lowering my blood sugars was well worth the initial response to the medication. In this month I have gone from weighing 221 to 209 which is great. I was also diagnosed with Fibro-myalgia. Although I had suspected this illness for some time. I have been watching my diet closely and added a Glucerna shake daily. Stress, how do we ever get that out of our lives. If it is not the job it is our children. If it is not our children it is always something else. Stress can be one of the worse things for diabetics to deal with. I have re-introduced myself to prayer. I even stopped that for a long time. I have realized that all the added worry I put on myself I have no control over. The situations are there and I cannot control others actions or the situations. I pray to God daily to take the stress I have added to my life and turn the out come over to him. I suppose realizing that you cannot control the outcome is the first step in lowering your stress load. It is like they say "One Day At A Time". Be proud of who you are, for you are a valued person whom I am sure the people in your life love you tremendously!! Thanks for getting me to open up here on Spark for the first time in about 2 years. See the good you have done for me today!!! Thank You So Very Much!!!!

Hi Team

I'm new here and wanted to say a quick hello...

My name is Christy, I'm 41 years old and a type II diabetic. I was dx'd in 2005 and take it very seriously. So far I have kept my blood sugar in check with a combination if exercise and low carb eating. My first A1c was 9.2 and my most recent was 5.3. I am a huge believer in eating according to you meter and still test frequently despite being in good control. I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Alisha and I have been a type 1 diabetic for 23 years and have two teenaged daughters. Over the years I have let my diabetes spiral out of control due to a unhealthy lifestyle and lack of insurance. So now that I have insurance I finally can get the medical attention I need, but I feel like I am starting all over again. I hope that I will beable to get my diabetes back on track so that I can watch my girls grow into beautiful young woman. My biggest problem is getting my blood sugars under control. I have went so long with high blood sugars that now when I am in normal range I feel low. I test all the time due to this problem. I need help with figuring out how to get these blood sugars steady and this feeling gone. emoticon emoticon Any suggestions on how to get back on track?

I'm now taking this Diabetes seriously!

I have a question? I have been getting MAJOR headaches...almost migraine. Could the blood sugar be related to these headaches? or could the Metformin cause these headaches?

At first I thought it was caffeine withdrawal..but I've been off of caffeine for 3 weeks now and still have them.

any thoughts?

In His Strength,

Cmlivergood

Hello everyone I'm Ruby, thanks for having me:)

I was dxd with diabetes T2 Nov 2009 and I'm challenged with fibromyalgia, damaged back and joints. I'm single, 54 and living in eastern WA state. I started out at 216 lbs am now down to 115. I'm managing by watching my carbs, eating healthy and exercising as I'm able with metformin 500 2xdaily. My last A1C was 5.2 so an improvement over the 5.4 I had last November. I still have some fat to burn off so onward and downward as my blood sugars improve.

Let's go!
♥Ruby

~Dianna in WA is running to the light!

Challenged with fibromyalgia, diabetes T2, Myofascial pain syndrome, Osteo-Arthritis, chronic bursitis, glaucoma and severe dry eyes.

Medication reduced to 1 - 500mg tablet of metformin daily.

Love my grand baby!

Hi there - Debbie, our timing and stories are pretty similar, and it's nice to feel that companionship. Welcome! My next test is coming up July 6th, so I'm looking forward to seeing how my hard work has paid off or how my new A1C is looking too.

Ellen - YES, stress definately has an affect, but I can't tell you how much. When I was first diagnosed I had two weeks of great numbers by being careful, then they bumped up about 7 to 10 as my trip back to see my mother, daughter and sister came near, and I'd not told them about my diagnosis yet--I was dreading it and hadn't realized how stressed I was about it. By the time I got there and told them all and dealt with their reactions, my numbers came back to a better place, but not as low as before. I think that's partly because I always felt stressed being in less control since I was traveling and with people who were serving food I kept having to turn down. Graon.

Good to be in this with others - we can do this!

Kate

I have allowed myself to get way out of control in the past year (really stupid), but am ready to fight my way back. I have been on my meds, tracking what I eat & using my son's treadmill to exercise, yet the numbers are very discouraging. I am working really hard at not getting frustrated and giving up-once again.
Does anyone have an idea just how much job related stress makes it harder to get the numbers to fall? Or is this just a myth/excuse or wishful thinking on my part?
Looking forward to getting involved and to know the rest of the group.

I am Debbie, a retired elementary teacher. Was diagnosed at the beginning of April with Type 2. I wasn't surprised, my mom and several other family members are diabetic. My A1C was 13, my next blood test is July 7th. So far, it seems to be better. Also have high blood pressure, it has come way down. Hubby and I are counting carbs and really watching what we are eating. I have lost 25 pounds so far.

Hi Everyone.

Thanks for the sparkmail urging me to sign in and introduce myself--good prompting! In late April I learned that my blood test landed me in diabetic range, and my doc sent me to an endocrinologist - who told me we would call it 'pre-diabetic' with the intention of 'pre-venting' full blown diabetes, rather than the inevitability of that term's usual meaning. Nice idea, and I'm going with it, but I also understand that once my body has reacted this way it's not going to suddenly stop having an inadequate insulin response. I'm much better with firm reality than with 'maybe'/'maybe not'.

I'm working really hard to eat within the limits he gave me and so far so good, and for the first time in my life my eating is focused on something other than my weight. I'm really significantly overweight (more than 100 pounds to lose) but eating on his guidelines I've lost nearly 20 pounds since April 28th (D-day for me). I'm walking every day and enjoying just feeling so much better. Now if only I could stop thinking about eating carbs! Does this every abate?

Personal-wise, I'm 50, married with two adult children, and a full time professional with a blessedly flexible schedule which allows me to walk on a lunch break some days and eat when I need to. I started on Sparkpeople when I went on a diet, and loved that team's support and encouragement--but I can't use that eating plan any longer given my blood sugar issues, so I'm looking for a sparkteam that is active along the lines of diabetic sensibilities.

My diabetic health isn't such that I'm on any meds or insulin at this point, and I'm hoping to keep my numbers under control enough not to have to do them--at least not right now. He wanted me to aim for keeping my BG under 100, but most of the time it hovers around 109 - 124, unless I've just finished a long walk. I look forward to getting to know you, and hope to learn plenty for you who've been at this whole thing.

Hello Everybody, My name is Aron and I'm happy to meet you. I decided to join this group because my 6-year old neice was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This isn't a new disease to our family since my Dad was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes thirty-two years ago. It's different when it comes to little ones though. I'm reading the book "the everything parent's guide to children with juvenile diabetes" by Moria McCarthy. It's helpful, but I still have so many other questions.

Thanks for listening,
Aron

Hi, Connie, it's been 3 months - how are you doing with your insulin adjustments? Have you found the dosages that are right for you? Once you do, you will probably find you love insulin - it offers much more "controllable" control if that makes sense. Are you getting your questions answered?

Hi, I'm Patricia. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on 2/14/11. I'm just learning about the disease and I've only just learned on Tuesday how to take my blood sugar. I'm understanding when and why I feel bad with this tool. I'm still in shock about the diagnosis. I'm 55 years old and would like to lose about 60 pounds.

Hi everyone, joined the team about a week ago and then got caught up in dealing with family issues and issues of daily life in general.....so let's try this again.... Am looking forward to getting to know all of you, realizing I am not alone in dealing with my diaibetes and its cvomplications.

Am 59 years old and have been disabled for 4-1/2+ years due to heart and lung problems, not to mention diabetic complications. Have had 2 open heart surgeries, last of which they did not give me much of a chance; have congestive heart failure and major breathing problems. Also have diabetes mellitus, type 2, with severe diabetic neuropathy of both legs and hands. Having been a business woman working in medicine all my life, am finding it very hard to be disabled and dealing with a total life change. After sevral years of being totally "on the bottom," I actually prayed to die... but, instead through the grace of God I was started on a spiritual journey that I would not give up for anything in the world; this is my first, second and third chosen activity of each and every day. I rejoined Spark in support of my niece with her Spark Program and in so doing learned lifestyle changes, getting several health issues under better control, and doing fitess plan made it possible to do more than I ever dreamed of doing again, not to mention losing weight along the way! The MOST AWESOME THING I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH BESIDES REJOINING SPARK AND ALL IT HAS TO OFFER IS THE GROWTH OF MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TO BEYOND WHAT WORDS CAN EXPLAIN!!!... all of which I am eternally grateful for.

I usually try to welcome each new member by name, but with over 30 new team members just today alone, some of our team mates would probably quit and run if I did so. Therefore, I have decided to send out one welcome message to everyone

Welcome to the team. Glad that you decided to join our little group.

Take some time to check out the team page, check over previous posts, and jump in on any conversation you like -- or create your own. If you have any questions, or want to vent, rant, rave celebrate your victories or cry over lack of progress, or just to chat, please don't hesitate to ask/post. We are all here to encourage and support each other...

Feel free to jump in on our monthly challenges (it's not too late to join April's challenge) or join our team goals. If you have an idea for a challenge, a goal, or for the team in general, please feel free to email.

We look forward to getting to know you.

I wish you much success on this journey to a healthier lifestyle.
