SparkPeople Graduate Students Team Messageboard A group for those facing the challenges, stress, and unhealthy habits associated with graduate school SparkPeople Graduate Students Team Messageboard Not doing enough? First post! This thought of mine has been coming up a lot in my mind: I feel like I am not doing enough in grad school! Along with grad classes I am also a TA, but I did discover that our grad program (and TA work) is not as intense as other bigger schools. I am into my second semester with an internship coming up in august for one full year. Some days I am overwhelmed with grading and some are pretty chill. It is interesting that whenever I talk to my other classmates, they are working even ... Mon, 7 Mar 2016 14:23:55 EST STRESS! Hi all,

I am a third-year Ph.D. student in Public Health. This is my last year of classes and I can't wait to be done! I feel like I'm in the 21st grade. I am the President of our state professional society and we have our conference on the 23rd. As you can imagine, I can't wait for the 24th. I teach in our department and I just applied for some other jobs. And, I'm supposed to be doing (need to be doing) research. Plus, taking care of myself. Good times. Mon, 5 Oct 2015 09:40:06 EST Work and Grad Courses ?!? FT or PT? I was just admitted to grad school, and I'm trying to decide how many hours to sign up for. I work PT, so I'm debating on taking 6 hrs or 9 hours. (It's a 57 hr dual Masters, so the sooner I finish, the better.) Since I'm presently working in the area of my Masters, I've been told by almost everyone that it'd be best to keep my job.

I have no idea what to expect from Master courses. How possible is it to take 9 hrs and work? Is it better to take 6 hours? If I try to take 9, I'll fi... Sun, 5 Oct 2014 23:47:49 EST I'm the new kid! Hi everyone, my name is Kim and I'm in the second half of my LPC (Counseling) program. Thanks to the high demands of grad school, I now find myself exhausted on the couch and doing yoga once a week. I'm wanting to train for a 5K and the Couch to 5K is a great program, I'm just lacking motivation and time. Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated! Fri, 29 Aug 2014 11:57:57 EST hi there! Hi! I'm Amy. I am 32 and a grad student living in Nashville, TN. This account is new but I've used SP before with good results -- just need to get with the program again! Among my health issues are asthma and celiac disease, both of which make getting/staying healthy a little more difficult, but I'm ready for the challenge. I'm glad to be part of the team! Mon, 25 Aug 2014 00:33:50 EST New MA student here. Hello! Greetings everyone -

I am a new grad student. I begin my MA in Art History next month, so I don't even know what it means to be tired and stressed yet. I'm hoping to get a jump on things and get healthier as I work toward accomplishing a major life goal of mine.

A little background information: I have two bachelor's degrees, the most recent in Art History. My first BA was in Fine Art, emphasis in painting and design. I currently study American art and I'm particul... Fri, 25 Jul 2014 16:45:20 EST Eating and writing I've noticed that one of my biggest problems trying to stay healthy right now is the uncontrollable urge to stuff my face when I'm tied to my desk writing papers or proposals. If I'm up and active, working in the lab, it's relatively easy to keep my food habits under control. But I'm going to spend the next couple of weeks doing a lot of reading and writing, and it's hard not to snack mindlessly when you spend 8 or 10 hours sitting in one place just thinking and thinking and thinking.
<... Tue, 3 Jun 2014 07:39:28 EST One Overworked, Stressed and Tired Grad Student Hi all -
I'm Ann. I'm a rising second year graduate student (out of 3 years) at the University of Maryland studying History and Library Science. My senior year in undergrad I spent in Wales and walked around everywhere. I returned to the U.S., moved halfway across the country, started grad school, worked 35 hours a week and ate a lot. So it came as no surprise that I managed to gain 30 pounds in the past year.

I'm hear because doing it alone I haven't succeeded in the past. I... Fri, 30 May 2014 20:12:56 EST Hallo! Hi folks, new member to the team but not new to SparkPeople, or even to grad school for that matter.

I've just finished my second year in a PhD program working with extremophiles. I passed my candidacy exam a couple of weeks ago (yay!) but in doing so I re-gained all the weight I had lost previously. So I'm dusting off my ol' Spark account to kick myself into gear.

This summer is going to be spent researching, hiking, and hopefully re-establishing healthy habits before t... Thu, 29 May 2014 09:57:56 EST Introduction Hi,
I'm Daphne and I just completed my 2nd year at UNC Chapel Hill. I'm currently working on a Ph.D in Education within the Educational Psychology, Measurement, and Evaluation strand. I've been a member of SparkPeople since September 2009. From September 2009 - mid-2010, I was able to lose ~60 pounds and maintained that weight until I entered my Ph.D program in August 2012. In the past 2 years, I've gained about 25 pounds as result of being sedentary (sitting in 3 hours classes, sitti... Sat, 10 May 2014 16:20:32 EST (Sort of) New Here Hi Everyone!

I'm a 4th year PhD student in I-O Psychology, and start lurking here around the time I began my program. Unfortunately, I also stopped lurking here (and anywhere else related to health and fitness) around the same time.

I'm back and hoping to get in shape and on track with regard to what I eat (in the words of my advisor "sooner rather than later"). 249 Wed, 7 May 2014 13:24:35 EST Brand new (and I don't mean the band) I thought I should introduce myself... I'm a graduate student in Speech-Language Pathology (first year) and like the rest of you find that I no time outside of homework, clinic, and massive paperwork to do anything to keep healthy.
Well I'm here to try to change SOMETHING about that.... Fri, 11 Apr 2014 19:55:51 EST Would you rather have 2 more hrs to sleep or work? I don't know which one I'd rather have, I just know that I need more time in the day. Tue, 18 Mar 2014 12:45:34 EST New Team Leader - Ideas? Hello everyone!

I'm the new team leader for the Grad Students SparkTeam. If anyone has any suggestions for making this team more interactive (or even a good team photo in the public domain), please keep the conversation rolling here! Tue, 4 Mar 2014 22:06:01 EST Business Help.. Hey everyone! So it’s time to get real! My name is Jen Riley and I’m the store owner and maker of fine knitted and crocheted goods. I’m also a mom of 2 adorable kids, a wife to a crazily overworked husband and a graduate student who is in her last semester (woot!).

This past semester and presently I’ve been working in an unpaid internship so my shop was hopefully going to fund my yarn habit/addiction . The internship has been me working as a counselor at my county clinic, which I h... Fri, 28 Feb 2014 20:41:54 EST Insufficient Breakfast Syndrome I tend to eat breakfast around 8am twice a week, but half-way through my morning classes, I start running out of gas. I usually have a banana and a Greek yogurt as I run out the door... maybe an oatmeal with granola on top if I have 5 minutes. Any ideas for a more filling QUICK breakfast, or a decent midmorning snack for my sprint between classes? Sun, 23 Feb 2014 18:55:11 EST Hello, lurkers! Oh. Hi there! Didn't see you there.

Just popping into the graduate students team page? Glad to see you here!

... No, no, don't go. I know you have a paper to write and lesson planning to do and you haven't seen your advisor in months and (s)he has to sign off on your degree plan and funding for next semester, but take a moment - no, seriously, just a moment - to stop by and say hi!
Fri, 21 Feb 2014 23:03:20 EST Campus Resources? Has anyone looked into the resources that their campus offers for wellness programs? I was pretty surprised to find that my campus offered group training sessions at the gym for $3/hour. Anyone else find some great resources? Fri, 21 Feb 2014 22:55:47 EST motivation interruption due to enemy Hey howdy

So, I wrote in my blog about my day yesterday and how excited I was at the possibility of trying something new and good for myself to get started again on being healthy and fit even with my thesis paper breathing down my neck every day. I gotta have time for me.

So I make this list of the things I need to accomplish the next few months and ideas to get me there. I was eager to start today and really get working when the cold or flu from Hell just up and hit m... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 22:07:31 EST The overwhelmed cycle--work or sleep--HELP! I am working on my Master's thesis and am on a limited time frame (the worst part is I'm not sure exactly when I have to have it all done, just a guesstimation because there're so many factors involved.) My computer fiasco with my thesis paper backups being corrupted, then my attempt to make new ones killed my original drive, has made me retype dozens of pages to work with and has sucked up valuable time I don't have to mess around with the thesis paper.

But at the same time I'm t... Wed, 5 Feb 2014 00:24:59 EST How do you un-learn laziness? I've been thinking about what i need to do for myself health-wise in between the insanity of working (and just starting part-time job 2.5--its tacked onto my ship job, but i do get another paycheck thankfully) and working on my master's degree. The tough part is that i have no good habits to speak of.

The difficulty i think is that i really have no clue where i'm going or what I want. I mean, getting pounds down? sure, i definitely want to lose the weight. otherwise, i'm not su... Thu, 23 Jan 2014 15:27:28 EST Anyone here? Last semester of grad school - looking to be in shape by graduation. I really want to have photos that I'm proud of by May. Between a full-load of classes, TAing, and looking for a job, should be a stressful semester.

Older student in Upstate New York, originally from Chicago. Fell off the wagon a few years ago, need to get back on board. Fri, 3 Jan 2014 12:55:59 EST New Here Hey everyone! I'm Amanda and I am a third year grad student here! I've decided it is time to finally focus on me and get the weight off. I just wanted to check in, introduce myself to ya'll and start making new friends :) Sun, 1 Dec 2013 13:13:01 EST What time of day do you struggle the most? I have found that I struggle the most during the afternoon. That time when the work day is winding down, during the long afternoon commute, and before dinner is ready at night - you get hungry but haven't planned for a healthy snack! What do you do to quell the afternoon munchies? Wed, 31 Jul 2013 22:21:38 EST Third Time's the Charm--I'm back. Hey howdy there

Its Talia again, and though dad still has health issues of a sort, things've calmed down enough that I'm pounding my fist against my gut and declaring war on it again...and other parts, of course. Well, I changed my plan to include lots of the outdoors this summer and at other times (still looking for a full-time job, but in between working, ship restoration, job searches, and working on my Master's thesis proposal, I need to do some major outdoorsy fun). I'm glad I... Mon, 27 May 2013 12:29:15 EST Introduction Hello!

I'm a DMA student in my final year of coursework and dreading my upcoming dissertation. I joined SparkPeople a few weeks ago and it seems to be helping me accomplish my fitness goals, however I did not join any teams. I figured as long as I was using the program, I might as well take advantage of this feature as well. Sun, 24 Feb 2013 23:10:07 EST Hello! Day 2 of sparkpeople journey and so glad to find fellow graduate students. I have read so many of the threads and thought, "That's me!" or "I know what you mean!" Wed, 20 Feb 2013 11:57:23 EST Introductions Hi All,

In my second class for a very intense grad school program (1 class every 6 weeks, 18 month program). Realizing that I can't do it all and am really struggling where to cut back. Nutrition and exercise has taken a back seat and I am looking to get back on track (again). Looking forward to learning from others how they balance working full time, going to grad school, and getting healthy.

Paula Sun, 10 Feb 2013 14:37:09 EST Linguist says hi! :P Hello there! I am Stella from Greece, a graduate student majoring in Linguistics and a private tutor in English.
I have real trouble quitting binge eating, trying to work out and handling all that stress of studying AND tutoring all at once.
I am very, very new here ( I just signed in yesterday), so I got here to get to know some of you guys!
I hope we'll have fun around here! Wed, 6 Feb 2013 10:37:41 EST Hello Fellow Students Good evening everyone! I am Mary, a 25 year old glutton for punishment student trying to lose about 30 pounds while trying to graduate. Full load of Master's classes and full workout load could be fun. Looking forward to having fun in this group! Mon, 7 Jan 2013 22:40:03 EST I finished!! I officially graduated with my Ph.D. last month (I defended in July, but health issues prevented me from making required changes until Oct.). I am so psyched...except for the looming student loans. LOL Wed, 2 Jan 2013 21:06:38 EST sorry i was out so long--had family issues Hey howdy

hope everybody's holiday season's going along swimmingly so far. i haven't worked a day or seen my baby girl (Texas) or my crazy friends the past several weeks. My dad had to go to the hospital for cancer treatment but was so out of sorts and not eating that he had to get a trach tube and feeding tube put in Thanksgiving week, which delayed treatment two weeks. he's got 2 more weeks of treatment to go and (hopefully) that's the end of it, then he can gradually get back to... Sun, 9 Dec 2012 13:54:49 EST Hi Everyone! Hi, my name is Lori. I'm working on a second master's degree in Oklahoma. In addition to being a grad assistant and taking a full load of classes, I currently have a desk job, which only adds to the sedentary lifestyle. I love cooking for my boyfriend and I, but don't always have the energy. I'm sure you all know how alluring fast food becomes when you're tired, stressed, and hungry. That combined with not having the energy (I'm sure I have the time to squeeze in some exercise) has gotte... Fri, 19 Oct 2012 11:29:05 EST What happened to Halloween (the holiday, that is)? Its kinda weird, and i just can't quite describe it, but over the past several years (at least the past 5 certainly), Halloween has gone by the wayside. By that, I mean calling it what it is: Halloween.

I'm actually working on a Halloween event at my college campus for the community, but like everything else, it seems to be a "Fall Festival" in order to advertise it. I swear, except on the calendar, Halloween seems to have become a dirty word.

I can't quite figure out... Sat, 6 Oct 2012 11:38:16 EST MA English Hi y'all! I'm an English student! Yup, that's right. Most of my time is spent on my ass, reading. If only books could burn calories... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 16:10:00 EST Meals on the go I'm kind of new to this team, but needs some advice. I'm full time and employee and full time graduate student studying School Guidance Counselor Education. I have found it very difficult to eat well in this first week of classes when running from work to school and only having a little bit of time to eat. I've resorted to fast food, trying to make healthy choices. I need to plan out meals and pack meals that are healthy, but I'm looking for suggestions. I need something that I can throw in t... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 21:06:38 EST hi all I recently gained a ton of weight because of depression, which has never happened before. I finished my second master's a few months ago, and was rejected for PhD program at the same school where i did my masters (after everyone said they love my work of course)...

anyway.. I'm still really hurt by it..but I'm getting over it (or trying)... in the meantime, i have to get this weight off.

nice to meet you all. Sat, 25 Aug 2012 01:53:34 EST Back from a hectic few weeks Hi Everyone,

I have been gone for awhile but I am back. I went to a conference in Orlando, Fl and while I was there I had two really bad things happen to me. First, I slipped in the shower at the hotel and hurt myself so I had to take it really easy. Second my FitBit quit working the same day and I didn't get a replacement for a couple of weeks.

After all this when I got home a couple of days ago the ADP deadlines have been pushed up again to the end of next week. I am ... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 19:49:51 EST amateur for-fun teams--how do you find? does anybody know how to find groups of for-fun amateur players or anything like that, (sorry, dunno how to word that better) for volleyball teams or roller derby or whatever else that's active (but not a running group, something more fun team oriented). I'd love to find something maybe i can learn and join in, or whatever. i just can't think of where i'd start to look for something like that (and i live about a good 45 minutes from houston itself, smack between houston and beaumont, so its... Thu, 2 Aug 2012 15:53:03 EST Hi! I started my weight loss journey today and just wanted to say hi to you all. I hope this team will help motivate me along the way. :) Fri, 27 Jul 2012 06:01:10 EST A Bit Overwhelmed Hi Everyone,

It has been a tough couple of weeks. First off I did lose a few pounds 104 However, these last few weeks are supper hectic. My semester ends next week and I am trying to figure out how I can get all my papers, discussions (hybrid summer class), group project, working out, and a finale test all due by various times next week without going crazy. Then balancing that with the stupid ADP they have me on which is suppose to help me with stress!!! It is creating m... Sat, 21 Jul 2012 10:11:13 EST Hello Fellow Students Hello All!
I am a Grad Student at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. I am taking my Master's in Education. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Integrated Language Arts and hope to be a licensed 7 - 12 Grade English teacher by June 2013. This is my hope and my dream. I am not your typical student. I am 45 years old with 5 grown children and 4 young grand children. I will be student teaching this year as well as attending classes and trying to find time to do homework. I feel like a... Sat, 14 Jul 2012 20:14:54 EST Hello everyone Today is my first day and i really hope to lose weight and keep it off Fri, 13 Jul 2012 22:43:59 EST A new day, new commitment, and new friends My name is Emma and I moved back to IL in October of last year. I started being part of the spark community last year but a lot of life changing and stressful events occurred and well derailed my commitment to myself. I am 33 years old and 210 lbs. My goal is to lose 95 lbs. My ultimate goal weight is 115.

A little bit about myself. I am currently a graduate student, studying Counseling Psychology, and I commute into the city quite often during the week. I have about an hour and ... Fri, 6 Jul 2012 11:07:06 EST Hello from Illinois Hi everyone! I am 23 (I'll be 24 in 10 days) years old. I am a 3rd year law student and a vegetarian. Both of which make loosing weight extremely difficult, but not impossible.

Happy weight loss and healthy living! Fri, 6 Jul 2012 10:00:24 EST How has stress affected you? I think I've always been a person who stresses out easily, so grad school of course brings it all out. This spring and summer are my last 2 classes of my masters program, but they have also been the most stressful out of all of them. During my comprehensive exams, I swear my hair got thinner! Now I'm in a condensed 6-week course that has forced me to give up nearly all my free time. In the last few weeks I've been experiencing all sorts of weird symptoms, like insomnia, systemic itching, ache... Thu, 28 Jun 2012 14:50:26 EST Hey ya'll :) Hey Everyone. And am 5' 2"
I want to get down to 105 before school starts.

I'd love to get to know you all :D Mon, 25 Jun 2012 10:49:49 EST Hiii from Katie in Germany Hi there! I am studying abroad in Germany, and will be back in CA soon! The year has been awesome, but I have spent a lot of time indoors or sitting around, making me lazy and tired...Now I really want to strengthen my legs and lose weight in my tummy! I have been working with kids off and on, and will be getting my teaching credential next year, so I'd really like to feel able to run around and play with the kids more! Plus, I really feel like I am at my prime age-wise, and I do not think i... Fri, 22 Jun 2012 12:14:12 EST Drop it Like it's Hot :-) Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself (and hopefully find some buddies to be inspired by/keep motivated!)

My name is Pam, I’m 25 (Almost 26!) and live/work/go to school in NYC. Since starting my first ‘real job’ in the fall of 2008, I’ve been slowly gaining weight. I’m 40 lbs overweight now. Yikes. It doesn’t help that I go to grad school at night. So, I work 9-5, and sometimes, classes run 6-9! Because it’s a cohort, part-time program, I’ve completed THREE years of a four year p... Mon, 18 Jun 2012 16:38:10 EST "Thumbs up for rock & roll" -- cute videos! It may be silly, but this video really helps motivate and inspire me. There's nothing quite like a little kid who's just learned to ride a bike to help you feel like you can do anything. ^-^; I watched it the morning of my quals defense and dissertation proposal. I think that's how I passed, lol.

And here's a remix!

Sat, 16 Jun 2012 09:51:28 EST New-Travel Tips Hey!

Well I traveled out of time this weekend with my husband and went off track. The main reason was because my husband (and I :) ) wanted to try so of the regional goods (in this case Philly Cheese Steaks). Obviously, this is not going to work if I am going to lose (and maintain) weight. I can get over a weekend of not following my Spark plan, but I have more trips coming up and I do not want to make this a habit. What is the best way to travel, enjoy the local goods, but not go ... Mon, 4 Jun 2012 08:25:19 EST The Battle of the Buldge My name is Kelly and I'm a 43 year old wife and mother of two girls aged 17 and 5. I've fough weight issues my entire life, even when I didn't have obvious weight issues I saw myself as overweight. I'm looking to learn healthier eating habits that I can share with the entire family so that we can get healthy together. Wed, 30 May 2012 10:38:38 EST Online studies Hi! Is there anyone doing online courses for their graduate studies? I am currently doing grad studies at a local university but am considering switching to a online program. Anyone have any experiences to share? Thanks Wed, 30 May 2012 00:04:01 EST Looking for Help Hey guys. I am new to the team, so if you want to learn a little bit more about me check out my post on the introduction board. I have tried countless number of times to diet and change my life, and every time I have failed so far. However this time I want it to be different, and I think one way I can make it different is by having a support/accountability buddy. I have about 140 lbs to lose so it will be a long road. If anyone would be interested I can e-mail, sparkmail, and text. So don't he... Sun, 27 May 2012 11:19:30 EST Hi All Hi all. I know I am still in undergrad, but I thought this would be a good place to start. I have one year left of undergrad, and after that I plan on going to Graduate school. I am an English major, and I am hoping to keep on perusing it. I want to either go into work for publishing or go on to get my doctorate and teach as a professor.

As of now I am considered morbidly obese, and well I am tired of it. I want to loose weight, and I want to feel better about myself. I am tired of... Sun, 27 May 2012 11:12:49 EST DONE!!!!!! Yes, folks, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I passed my final orals/dissertation defense yesterday --- with only a couple of typos to fix!

334 Sat, 26 May 2012 15:47:32 EST Hello! First thing I love about this site is that I can do one "intro" message to all my boards - yay! Thu, 12 Apr 2012 02:15:50 EST Anyone else stressing at the end of the semester? Papers, exams, presentations, comps, thesis, UGH. Anyone else stressing out right now? Sometimes grad school can really take its toll... Tue, 10 Apr 2012 14:22:57 EST hope to connect with all of you soon I am a wife, mom, and Ph.D. student (almost in my third year). Since I began school I have somewhat neglected my exercise routine and my eating habits are worse than ever. I am surprised that I have only gained 10 pounds. I am not too worried about my weight gain because I was somewhat thin to begin with but I feel so awful that I am not consistent with my exercise program. This is so unlike me and although I love my studies I feel like I m neglecting myself. I would love to connect with ... Thu, 22 Mar 2012 22:33:04 EST I'm New:) Hey there, my name is Kelly and I'm currently in grad school working towards my MA in Psychology. I love meeting new people here and finding buddies so that we can motivate each other :) Sun, 11 Mar 2012 13:41:51 EST Finishing Up So I'm finally in the home stretch of my Ph.D. studies, and it is official: my dissertation has taken over my life. But in order to keep myself going and to keep myself on track with my Spark-related goals, I've created a kind of fun project/fundraiser to see me through.

For no reason other than to share ideas and motivation, here's a link to what I'm doing:

ca
Mon, 5 Mar 2012 22:04:51 EST Comprehensive exams...this is torture Does anyone else have to take comps this year? Or what are your experiences with them?

Last night I completed my comprehensive exams, which for my graduate program in Library and Information Science consisted of writing 2 research papers (8-12 pgs each) in answer to 2 questions of your choice out of 9, and you're given 17 days to complete them in the early part of the semester. I had to take a few days off of work to get them done and keep up with my regular classwork. Now I have t... Fri, 2 Mar 2012 14:12:15 EST Yuck, hating my studies right now Right now I am totally sick of grad school. I'd think about quiting but I have come so far and only a few courses left. Would love to hear from you Wed, 22 Feb 2012 14:12:13 EST Hello from Law School Hi! I'll probably be downing the tea to stay awake and stay away from food, but does anyone have any good suggestions for when I do this all over again tomorrow night?

(I'm a history masters student currently writing a 20 page paper about perspective and how it shapes the formation of history and identity in Spanish California) Tue, 7 Dec 2010 21:06:25 EST Final Exam Week approach of luck Hey howdy!

I don't have a class this semester, so no exams myself, but I wanted to say good luck to everybody and all the best to ya.

be good to yourselves, take time to meditate and calm down a bit here and there to let the info flow through ya. get something nummy to treat yourself afterwards, but don't overdo it. enjoy coffee in moderation (if possible) and just keep breathing.

Be good guys and all will be well. Thu, 2 Dec 2010 23:29:49 EST I'll admit it I haven't exercised since Tuesday! I am overwhelmed by the holidays and finals. i lost all this wait in the past 2 months and was in the best shape of my life...ugh...I am afraid I have lost SOOO much progress in a week and it is looking like I won't be able to get back to it for 3 more days at least! Sat, 27 Nov 2010 17:26:26 EST December-New Years Challeng --Ideas? Hello there!

I was trying to think of challenge ideas for this team, as this is a very trying month with exams and stress and the aftermath of having time (or even less, as the case may be). I'm looking for your ideas on what you want to accomplish (reasonably, of course--hee hee) or try to do by new years day, things that you want accountability to try and do, or whatever else you feel. I haven't had many experiences with challenges myself because i forget to check my e-mail once... Fri, 26 Nov 2010 16:52:19 EST Anyone have Final Projects due?? I don't have traditional finals in my grad school program...instead we are graded on final projects which are due in every class...several in some classes. I have an informal presentation and a formal presentation due in one of my classes. I am working on a video for my informal and the formal is a group project which is due in 3 weeks and I am the only one who has done any research.I have 3 papers due in another class. And only one paper due in my third class. My daughter has been sick the l... Sun, 14 Nov 2010 14:04:46 EST Exam day rituals...exam taking rituals.... Hey howdy!

I got to thinking about the quirky things I do to prepare for exams, especially written exams, the day of and during the actual exam, and was wondering if anybody had any comfort things they just had to do or not.

Me, the last times i took written exams, I brought my bag of goodies with:
--a dozen pens, all lined up on my desk
--a large thing of water
--a coffee-filled thermos
--a blanket in case it got cold
--my flannel button up shir... Mon, 8 Nov 2010 09:38:51 EST Fall Semester Half Over!! I can't believe it but we are already halfway through the fall semester! How is everyone doing so far? My own personal balancing act is going surprisingly well. I've been feeling more energetic and more motivated to get things done in the lab. I also lost 3 pounds this week which is quite exciting!

How do you deal with the after a work day laze that most of us experience? I usually only exercise late because I get home late and need to force myself to exercise after dinner. Mon, 25 Oct 2010 13:12:43 EST Social networking sites--what's the big deal? I'm not the most sociable person around (sparkpeople, school, and my few errands are about as sociable as I generally get), but I just can't bring myself to get into the facebook or twitter thing like everybody else seems to. Sparkpeople is a different story because we're here for a purpose--a healthier life. A general social networking site is hard to wrap my brain around.

Every day there's grumbling from students about not being able to get into their facebook pages or whatever... Thu, 14 Oct 2010 14:23:57 EST HP#60 ink--know a good refill system/ink seller? I knew the cartridges would be a bit smaller (i had to get a new PSC a couple months ago--deskjet F4480), but I didn't think i'd run out of ink so quickly. I put one cartridge in to do some printing/copying i had to replace it again the next morning! i mean, that's an awful lot of replacing, especially when i get good and busy.

I see different refill systems or refurbished cartridges online, but I don't know these sellers--has anybody tried using any of them? i can't afford new ca... Thu, 14 Oct 2010 14:10:22 EST Concentration! As academics we pretty much always have something that we need to read or work on. I am wondering how you feel a workout impacts this? Do you feel like you can concentrate better or worse after cardio? How about strength training?

Personally, I feel like I need maybe 10 minutes to catch my breath after which I feel like I can concentrate and work better. Sun, 3 Oct 2010 14:58:26 EST something to discuss- -upswing in cyberbullying Amazing how i'd just finished a 4 hour workshop at the campus on understanding personal and other attitudes about diversity and how every person counts, every group counts--then I come home and see the news. HLN reported about a gay college student who killed himself because of crap posted on the internet about him, including video of him having sex, taken by his roommate through the webcam. I'd also read yesterday in a magazine about a young high school girl who did the same a few months ag... Fri, 1 Oct 2010 23:18:16 EST The fall semester is here! Hi Everyone!

Just wondering how everyone's fall semester is going so far. Mine has been very hectic as usual. Add to the usual school stuff the fact that we have 3 family birthdays in September! I'm only now getting into a routine that I hope to keep up with. The company my boyfriend works for gives them money to put towards fitness (they can use it to claim expenses like gym passes or fitness equipment) and using that combined with my birthday money we purchased an e... Wed, 29 Sep 2010 11:42:09 EST getting in touch with hard-to-reach professors... hey howdy!

I'm having some major issues trying to get in touch with people who run a new degree program that i'd love more info in (after all, if its not gonna point me in the direction or give me the expertise i need to go there, i don't need to get onboard). I mean, they never are at their phones (or leave the phones at busy so you can't get through), and I left an e-mail a week ago for one and never got a response. i left one last night for the degree plan head with the same ... Hey howdy there!

I was looking around for more high school teacher support and decided to create a new place for us. Its called the "High School Teachers Surviving and Thriving" team. Current, former, and teachers-to-be are definitely welcome, as well as other high school staff and high school substitutes (after all, we are all in this together 211 )

Feel free to join in and we can build this place together--i left more detail in the introduction sticky threa... Tue, 28 Sep 2010 15:11:51 EST 2 Masters at once? has anybody tried that?... Hey howdy!

I grabbed a copy of the graduate school catalog a few weeks ago and had lots of fun looking through it (the same rush prepubescent and pubescent boys get looking through a victoria's secret catalog, i get looking through my school one...revealing, huh?). I discovered something brand spanking new, new as of the past year. I am a History major and want to continue that degree, but I found a new degree plan for Digital Media Studies, apparently the first of its kind in ou... Tue, 28 Sep 2010 15:07:45 EST yo there--new name, renewed restart after a year! hey there!

i was formerly here probably a year ago, but i had to quit a while. i needed to re-prioritize and figure out what i really needed/wanted to do with myself.

well, i'm trying to save up and go back for my master's degree. after striking out again this summer in the pursuit of a teaching job (though i did get one interview at least--too bad they wanted a boy's baseball coach more than a teacher though the guy interviewing me was fighting for a teacher teacher..... Tue, 28 Sep 2010 14:28:45 EST Hello! Hi all. I am a PhD candidate in art history. I'm just about to be ABD and trying to lose some weight. What works best for you?

Mon, 20 Sep 2010 23:34:49 EST PhD... no, MSc... oh, just get me out of here! hey all. i joined a PhD program three years ago, because i had this crazy idea that i loved science and i was an "exception" to all the old adages. i was certain that i was going to be a brilliant grad student, publish a mountain of papers published in prestigious journals, obtain significant amounts of grant funding, and in short, take over the world. by the time i was 30.

i started in organic chemistry, but left the lab when my PI had me do nothing but undergrad-level work on res... Sun, 19 Sep 2010 18:00:52 EST Political Theory PhD to be! Hi Ya'll - I'm new to spark people but looking forward to learning how to use this community to help me on my weight loss journey! Student I graduated with my BA in June and start grad school in October. All Summer I have been studying for and taking exams which are required for this program. It has been an exhausting Summer and I am ready to start school! I lost 35lb in the last 6 months by just watching what I eat. I am starting the "Insanity" exercise program tomorrow. I would love to start grad school buff, lol. I have a teenage daughter and a partner who are supportive of me but I worry there will be a lot of sacrifice on t... Sun, 12 Sep 2010 19:12:38 EST All-Nighters Yesterday afternoon I was working in my office and I got on a roll with my research. Before I knew it, 1 AM had arrived. And I was really, really hungry!

Anyway, I have several healthy snack options available in my office at school, and those are great for any number of occasions, but what occurred to me last night was that I don't have any "emergency meals" available at school. You know: for those times when you're better off to stay put, rather than to take a "break" and lose mom... Thu, 9 Sep 2010 13:51:03 EST M.S :) Hi everyone! I'm getting my masters starting about a week ago, fresh out of undergrad. Yikes!

Already overwhelmed but soo ready to juggle this and weight loss. Wed, 8 Sep 2010 14:40:37 EST Going back to school I've been out of school since 2006. Since then I've lost 65lbs with a lot of help from SP. I'm starting my M.S. in Historic Preservation at Roger Williams University this week, and I will be joining the campus gym. I've haven't lost any weight since December, but I don't want to graduate at this weight. Sun, 22 Aug 2010 09:24:51 EST Any PA students out there? Hey there! I am in my 3rd and final year towards getting my master's degree and becoming a PA! I am hoping to find any other PA students out there, that may be able to help me along on my weight loss journey! I am lucky enough to be apart of a program that gives me the summer off. I started a masters right after undergrad and I don't think I was prepared for it at all. The first semester was very stressful, but still managed to pull off a 4.0. However, second semester was terrible - I was only registered for one 6 credit course but i failed the first exam, freaked out, and dropped the class. This summer I returned and took one more course - got an A....but now it's time to return in the fall and I am dreading two things:

(1) returning to class with the sam... Sun, 1 Aug 2010 21:04:29 EST SO GRATEFUL TO FIND THIS TEAM I love, love, love the topics and posts in the discussion forum, and feel like I've FINALLY found people out there who understand. School atmosphere is just too competitive to feel like I can honestly and completely share my weaknesses and fears with my friends/colleagues, and my non-nerd friends can't relate to the seemingly constant stress I'm under. Just wanted to share that, and say thanks to all of you.

Sun, 1 Aug 2010 14:54:35 EST Greetings from the Ozarks! Hi! I'm D, a 3rd year Philosophy PhD student at the U of A. I've been a member of SP for about 7 months now, but have just this summer started seeing results (ever so slowly). I'm glad to have found a group of Sparker's who understand the stress and inconsistency of grad school life. Although I'm fortunate to have funding via a teaching assistantship, I'm paid very meager wages. This makes healthy eating a challenge (there are only so many bowls of beans and rice a girl can take before t... Sun, 1 Aug 2010 13:59:56 EST Grad Student in Philly Hi all. I am now "officially" a grad student now that I've been through orientation and started class. I am getting my Master's in Occupational Therapy in Philly and since I live 90 minutes away from Philly it will be a challenge to lose weight while being in school and commuting. This seems like a great supportive group and hopefully I can keep the weight loss going... Sun, 1 Aug 2010 08:39:10 EST Sociology in North Carolina Hello! I'm working on my MA in Sociology, and I'm here to get rid of excess weight so that I look and feel good when I get that hood. :) Sat, 31 Jul 2010 12:45:03 EST Ed.D. Hi, all!!

I'm Barbara and I'm working on my Ed.D. and concentrating on educational use of computers. I'm done with prelims and am working on my dissertation. That's been not going so well -- I thrashed with a couple of different topics for more than a year, although one did lead to some publications. My adviser left campus for another position without letting me know her plans (!), so I've had to make some adjustments. Plus, my campus decided not to hire me back as a teaching... Sun, 25 Jul 2010 09:33:47 EST 2nd year grad studies! Hi All,

My name is Miriam and I am turning 26 in September. So far I have been really struggling to find a balance with school, home life, friends and fitness!! I live wi... Fri, 23 Jul 2010 13:26:20 EST Hello from ISU Hey All,
I'm getting my PhD in toxicology at Iowa State University. In undergrad, I play softball for my university and was forced to workout 3 times a day. Now that I'm in grad school, my motivation has failed time and time again. I'm hoping that this site and this group can keep me motivated while I attempt to obtain my ideal weight.
Christi Thu, 22 Jul 2010 14:23:23 EST PhD Student Hello!

I'm new to the team. I'm a grad student in an interdisicplinary PhD program. My main field of study is psychoanalysis.

I'm studying for my comps right now and taking them in September. I wish this site had a book and note taking tracker in addition to food and fitness. It is really hard to stay motivated and kind of lonely to be reading 8 hours a day.

Any tips and strategies for studying (and healthy eating/fitness) would be much appreciated! :) Thu, 22 Jul 2010 03:16:24 EST Procrastination as a weight loss strategy? I took my dog for an extra long walk tonight because I didn't want to work on my paper that is due Thursday.

Technically, I did this last night too.

Probably not the best plan academically, but does anyone else use exercise to procrastinate school work? (or vice versa) Tue, 20 Jul 2010 21:52:30 EST Hello from Pittsburgh (kinda) Hello,

My name is Crystal and I am finishing up a master's in arts management at CMU in Pittsburgh. Currently, I'm doing an internship in Chicago.

I've been wanting to lose these "last 15 pounds" for years, and it was supposed to be this summer, when I only have to work 40 hours a week (what a luxury!), but alas, it hasn't happened.

The problems are: #1 I LOVE FOOD. #2 I am trying to eat just natural, real foods. No diet stuff. But also, I can't afford farmer... Sun, 18 Jul 2010 00:51:38 EST New to the Team! Art History PhD Student Hi Everybody. So glad to see that there is a team for grad students. I just wanted to introduce myself to the crew -- I'm a PhD Student in Art History (I focus on Japanese art, but I am interested in broader topics as well). I'm getting ready to start my exam readings in the fall which is one of the most stressful periods, and I decided that I cannot keep living like I am.

I have struggled with weight all of my life, but I absolutely ballooned upon entering grad school. The c... Mon, 12 Jul 2010 21:35:59 EST Sociology in Texas Hello! I'm a graduate student in Sociology. I recently finished my thesis (YAY!) and will graduate in August. I plan on continuing to get my PhD. I have steadily gained weight over the years, although that cannot all be blamed on school. I did stress eat like crazy during proposal defense time though, it was ridiculous! I'm hoping to change things this time around and cope better. :) Wed, 7 Jul 2010 09:36:57 EST media studies phd You know, when people snicker after finding out that I study new media and social networking and how people basically *bond* over media in online environments, it's kind of sad. Sure, I'm the perfect stereotype of the glued-to-the-computer nerd with no life to them, but that doesn't make it true.

So. For the sake of my effed-up knees and sore feet, for the sake of my wide rear crammed into places it doesn't fit too often, and for the sake of my future job search in an overcrowded m... I'm so glad to see this board here! Sat, 19 Jun 2010 09:37:32 EST PhD student Hi,

I am about halfway through the coursework for my PhD. I'm tired of being the chubby girl talking about health promotion and hoping to improve my own diet and exercise habits.

My short term goal is to lose 17 lbs by the end of the summer. And I want to lose 77 (to get me in the healthy BMI range) before I finish my program.

Mon, 31 May 2010 13:27:18 EST MLIS grad student Hello. Sat, 20 Mar 2010 11:56:26 EST I could really use your help!!! Hello, everyone! I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology and one of my latest projects involves examining how people's experiences in the workplace vary in relation to their physical fitness (ex: Do people who are overweight experience discrimination? Do people who work out regularly have lower work-related stress?).

I'm trying to reach people from all different areas, backgrounds, etc., so I'm reaching out to my fellow Spark grad students for help! If you know... Mon, 8 Mar 2010 16:20:41 EST Hello, from an Archaeology Grad Student! Hi! I just started my PhD (quals this summer!) in archaeology. I already have my BS and MA in anthropology.

I'm trying to lose about 60lbs - for personal reasons, but also because I'm going to need to be fairly in-shape when I'm digging in the field.

My biggest problem with this weight loss so far has been because of my school schedule - does anyone else have trouble "justifying" time at the gym when you have papers/grading to do? Sun, 7 Mar 2010 14:20:49 EST question for journali sm/media majors Hey there peoples!

I really want to do some great work around making documentaries and such (no film classes around here unfortunately, and broke as it is), but I'm really wondering about the concept of interviewing people and permission to do filming in public places and whatnot.

I'm looking up the latter stuff and have found a few things (tons of "for dummies" books i've read through the past month), but as far as interviewing, like questions to ask and such, i'm a bit... Tue, 2 Mar 2010 11:21:12 EST Hello!! Hello,

I'm a PHD student in my second semester. At least 2 more years before I actually get my Doctorate. I have been in and out of school since I started my Bachelor's degree in 2001. Each year in school only helped me add more stress in my life, and a little more weight to my 5'5" frame. I joined SP on 19th January 2010 and have lost about 17 pounds since. I have worked out everyday for the last 41 days and have managed to stay within my calorie range for the most part since I jo... Sun, 28 Feb 2010 18:07:41 EST Good Day from the Plant Path Dept. Hello everyone!

My name's Sarah and I'm an MSc in Plant Pathology. I currently work 10-16 hours a day trying to figure out how the bacterium Enterobacter cloacae infects and causes postharvest disease in onions. I am doing both greenhouse and molecular studies, as well as SEM and fluorescence microscopy, to discern the interaction (I have a committee meeting on Thursday, so in a way, I'm kind of prepping for that with this post).

I've been on Spark for about a month, and... Sun, 7 Feb 2010 15:31:12 EST Grad student looking to get healthy Hey y'all! My name is Elizabeth and I'm a graduate student at Purdue in Ag and Bio Engineering. Life as a grad student doesn't leave me with much time for cooking, nevermind working out. And when I do have some free time, I use it to relax by shopping, watching TV or just hanging out with friends. I have made a pact with some friends to get back in shape and thought SparkPeople was the perfect tool to help me out. Thanks for reading!! Tue, 2 Feb 2010 21:48:12 EST Hello from an Anthropology grad student! Hi,
This is my first semester as a grad student in Anthropology. I'm interested in Museum Studies and Archaeology.

I lost weight after undergrad and want to keep working out and eating right. Hi everyone,
I weighed myself this morning and got a big shock because it is the most I have ever weighed. I had my qualifying exam 2 weeks ago (and passed!) but while I have been preparing for the exam for the last few months, I have been so stressed out that I have been eating far too much... so my weight has been gradually going up.
But today is the day to start doing something about it and get back on track with a healthy lifestyle.
Hopefully Sparkpeople will give me the ... Sat, 30 Jan 2010 09:00:29 EST What do you cook when you have no time? My first semester of grad I found that I was eating out WAY too much (Burger King never looked so enticing) because I simply had no time to cook. Then, during the last month before final papers I picked up the La Choy's Chow Mein (chicken and beef) and started keeping them in my cabinet. They only take a few minutes to make in the frying pan (no oil or fat needed), they have plenty of vegetables, I add an extra can of bean sprouts and a package of Uncle Ben's Jasmine Ready Rice which microw... I know I'm capable of finishing the exam, but am finding the process to be emotionally draining. Sun, 24 Jan 2010 12:30:51 EST Greetings Greetings all, I'm popping back onto Spark People after about 6 mos off. Last semester was my first sem of grad after taking over a year off to work. I expected it to be busy but Lord Almighty I didn't expect what I got. I'm getting a MA in History-Public History and working like a mad woman. With the stress of last sem I eventually threw out good eating habits and lived on frozen foods for ages and decided that I can't do that again. I can't stand the sight of the frozen meal aisle at th... Wed, 20 Jan 2010 20:47:39 EST Using procrastination for good, not evil? Hi, everyone. I'm a first year PhD student in economics in Southern California. I wouldn't mind losing a little weight, but my main focus this year is getting rid of bad habits and establishing good ones. With quals looming in June it's easy to try to put things off, but life academia will always be tough, always busy, and I want to make things like regular exercise and healthier eating a permanent part of my life.

Outside of school, I love to travel, hang out with good friends, an... Tue, 12 Jan 2010 17:52:23 EST School Counseling Grad Student Hi, everyone! I've been using Spark People for a while, but I decided to join this group to gain support from other grad students who are likely facing some of the same challenges that I am. I'm a school counseling grad student, graduating in May. This semester I'm working 40 hours per week between two internship sites and I'm taking 9 hours of classes. I'm finding it difficult balancing school, work, family, friends, housework, and working out. I'm super organized and I like routines, but I ... Sun, 10 Jan 2010 20:08:13 EST Hello I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. My name is Michelle and I'm not sure if I can be called a graduate student or not! I started graduated school a few years ago and in 2006 started my thesis then had to scrap it as I did some things out of order. Since then, I have not touched it. I am looking at going back finishing as my thesis is the only thing left I need to do.

I had a lot going on in 2006, with working extra hours due to personnel changes, getting married, dealin... Thu, 7 Jan 2010 15:21:04 EST Any other Acct grad majors here? Hi,

Just wondering if there are any others out there.

This last year has been a year of changes for me, with starting school again and moving out of state, figured why not start working on losing all the excess weight.

Well just wanted to see what this team was about! Tue, 5 Jan 2010 20:33:48 EST Hello! Hi everyone! I am a graduate student in Ohio going for my Masters in business administration with a criminal justice concentration. I majored in social work with minors in CJ and psychology in my undergrad. I am looking forward to getting to know some new people and being a part of the team!

~Sarah Mon, 4 Jan 2010 21:26:46 EST new and looking for a buddy Hi everyone,
I am an engineering phd student in San Diego. Looking to keep my eating under control and have more of a variety of exercise throughout my week, ultimately to lose 30 lbs by the end of 2010. Anyone interested in an accountability partner I would love to have a person or group to check in with perhaps weekly?

Also how do I set up one of the progress tracker bars? Thanks :) Sat, 2 Jan 2010 04:20:10 EST Lose 50# by the time I'm 50! Hi! I'm an RN working on my masters degree online. I've lost and found 50# twice in the past 10 years, so I know I can do it and I know how good it feels to be without it. My birthday is in July and I would like to enter that phase of my life feeling successful and healthy. Looking forward to making new friends on this journey. Fri, 1 Jan 2010 19:47:20 EST has anybody felt incompetent at grad school? Hey there.

I was really wondering something, of course I'm still doing a ton of thinking now. Maybe its my nervousness about my grades coming in, but I remember this past semester, and how I just felt like the rug was pulled from under my feet and all that was below it was slick ice.

I really felt so much slower than my classmates most of the semester, and I couldn't understand why. I mean, I was a bit of an average student, and I did participate, but I sure didn't fee... Sun, 20 Dec 2009 21:04:43 EST help! need motivation to write!!! I've spent the past couple of weeks trying to get my research materials together and come up with a thesis--this is by far the hardest paper i've had to write because of so many limitations on it and such.

i was supposed to have rough drafts earlier this week, but was still trying to make my outline--and this paper's due tomorrow night by 6 pm and i just can't get motivated to start it. it stinks!

i guess i'm just so tired from this crazy semester that i don't wanna do ... Sun, 6 Dec 2009 13:45:56 EST Hey from the Houston area! Hello there, fellow grad students!

I've been on this site before (as psychogreengirl), but never in this group (guess i wasn't spelling very well the day I looked).

its nice to be in a place where we're all in the same stressed boat. Not finding a job after getting my bachelor's degree and this first semester of graduate school killed me--I gained back all the weight i'd lost the past few months before (ugh). Hi, I'm a first year grad student looking to nix my unhealthy habits from undergrad and get in better shape! Wed, 18 Nov 2009 22:03:13 EST Another history graduate student here! I am sooo happy to find a graduate student team on Sparkpeople! I am dissertating at the moment and finally have a little breathing room in my life - time to get healthy again. I gained 35 pounds since I started! I have lost 15 since my all time high around the time I took my comprehensive exams. Now working on the stubborn 20 that simply haven't been willing to budge.
I look forward to getting to know y'all as I learn to lead a more balanced life again. Thu, 29 Oct 2009 19:03:22 EST Hi from Berlin! I'm new, too, just joined SparkPeople three days ago. I have two main goals: I would like to obtain my Diplom (comparable to Master's degree) in Computational Linguistics -- and I would like to lose weight that I gained over the last 5 years, become more active, and most importantly, feel better about myself.

Right now I'm not doing much besides sitting on my butt at work or sitting on my butt at home studying. Neither does it help that the supermarkets have been selling gingerbrea... Tue, 27 Oct 2009 11:15:18 EST SLP Grad Student Hi everyone, my name is Sara and I am working on my masters in Speech Language Pathology part time while working full time. I was brilliant and started grad school and my full time job in the same month. I have put on 15-20 pounds since then. Now I'm working on balancing work, school, and marriage without forgetting to take care of myself too.

I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you. Thu, 15 Oct 2009 00:25:24 EST History grad student Hello everyone. My name is Julia and I'm in my third year of the Latin American history PhD. Just discovered this team and I'm so excited! I sometimes feel that we, grad students, are in a limbo of sorts: not really students (as college students, that is), but not in professional life yet. Therefore, I always felt that I had different needs that many of the folks in SP who have "normal" jobs. Anyway, just stopping by to introduce myself. Good luck with school and healthy living everyone! Thu, 8 Oct 2009 16:49:40 EST Applying to medieval history program I've tracked down my former professors for recommendations, found my master's dissertation to submit as my writing sample, and written my application essays. Now all that's left is to put it all together and submit it onlie. Oh, and take the GRE again. And then wait anxiously to hear the admission committee's response.

On top of that, I've been invited to a departmental picnic tomorrow, where I'll meet all my potential professors for the first time. At this point, I'm so nervou... Mon, 14 Sep 2009 12:20:13 EST New to this team! Hi! I just started graduate school over the summer, doing a Masters of Education in School Counseling.

I live in Portland, OR. I've been a sparker for a long time, but thought I'd find a team with other like-minded students! :)

My schedule is changing dramatically this month, and I'm finding it hard to eat well, sleep well, exercise regularly and just generally keep focused on my health when I'm so busy! I'm guessing others are feeling this too?

I'd love to he... Sun, 13 Sep 2009 18:07:12 EST Good Lunch Ideas on Campus Other than a boring sandwich, does anyone have any good lunch ideas while you're on campus all day? I find the days when I'm at school all day, I do better when I plan snakcs and have a good lunch as opposed to sitting at home where I can snack on whatever's around... Mon, 7 Sep 2009 18:34:35 EST First Week (or so) I'm wiped out! How is everyone else doing with their first few weeks of schools this semester? Mon, 31 Aug 2009 14:10:54 EST Semester Start Challenge Ladies and Gentleman,

It's about that time again. It's almost September. The new Fall semester/quarter is looming in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Perhaps you are excited. Perhaps you are nervous. Perhaps your summer was so busy you didn't even notice. But for all of us it is that time of year when we must once again find a way to blend classes and homework with health and fitness. So I'm inviting anybody who wishes to join me in a Semester Start Challenge. This ... Sun, 23 Aug 2009 15:16:54 EST ***PODCASTS? I'm trying to find a decent podcast. Hi everyone! I'm going back to school this fall after graduating college a couple of years ago and I'm super nervous about keeping up any sort of healthy lifestyle - the only plus I can see is nearby campus gym! In college I lost a lot freshman year, then proceeded to gain 10 pounds a year each year after that and I don't want to do that again!

Anyways, looking forward to meeting you all! Wed, 29 Jul 2009 13:59:39 EST finished 1st year of grad school. gained 25 pounds Hello grad students of SparkPeople.

I'm in Austin, TX for grad school and originally from New York, NY. I decided that keeping track of what I eat and getting myself to exercise were too much work the first year, and my body's paid for it. The first semester wasn't too bad, but I gained a lot in the second one.

I'm hoping that if I get myself into healthier habits now I can get myself to keep them up once classes start up again.

Right now I'm studying for a qu... Tue, 14 Jul 2009 20:55:29 EST Summer How is everyone spending their summer? Enjoying the break or focusing on research?

I'm doing a combination of both, I suppose. Obviously, my goal was to focus strictly on my research this summer, but I've found myself taking more days off during the week than actually working.

What about everyone else? Hopefully I'm not the only slacker! Sun, 5 Jul 2009 12:10:13 EST Counselor Education Graduate Student Greetings everyone:
I am earning my Master degree in Counselor Education with a focus in Student Services in Higher Education at Georgia Southern University which is located outside of Savannah,Ga. During my first I gained almost 20 pounds eating queso, starting at a computer during my 20+ hours of GA work, laying in bed all day reading over 40 pages per week, and hanging out at the local coffee eating the delicious crab stew every Saturday.
I joined this group for shared perspecti... Sun, 28 Jun 2009 19:38:48 EST PhD end-stages = weight gain? Yeah so about 20 pounds snuck up on me in the past 10 or so months (in this the supposed last year of the Phd...not going to happen). Have you found dissertation induced sitting (even if most of that sitting is slacking off) has brought you to this site?

I'm in the mood to blame my PhD for everything wrong at the moment. A motivation to finish? Sat, 27 Jun 2009 08:40:07 EST Archaeology Grad's silly hello story time (woo!) Quick silly story as to why I am here. I live in the UK and I recently volunteered for a weight loss study being done through NHS. They were looking for slightly overweight but otherwise healthy folks and I qualified. I went in for my first check-up and weigh-in yesterday. I should say now that the actual study does not start for another two weeks.

Anyhow I thought I had gained mayyyyyybe 10 pounds since I last was really paying attention to such things. I am 3 classes and my thesis away from my M.S. in International Relations. Nice to meet everyone! Wed, 17 Jun 2009 04:37:05 EST Healthy Care Package Ideas? My lovely parents do their best to support me in my thesis writing efforts- including doing something that I tend to forget to do myself- feed me. They have sent a request for a list of things they can send in a care package. Now, normally Oreos and a big bag of peanut M&M's would be on the list, but those are not part of a healthy lifestyle. So, I'm polling my fellow graduate students (and some other folks) for ideas.

What are your suggestions for a healthy care package? Keep ... Mon, 15 Jun 2009 18:47:29 EST Hello from Columbus Hi, my name is Jen and I'm a PhD student in City & Regional Planning at Ohio State. I'm finishing up my first year right now. (Hooray!)

I've been on Sparkpeople for a bit, but have only used it consistently since April. I've been exercising and logging my nutrition, but these last few weeks have not gone as well. I'm excited to get back on track in about a week (when everything is wrapped up for the year). Sat, 6 Jun 2009 23:51:07 EST Greetings from MI! Greetings all,
I am a grad student in education at the University of Michigan. This is such a great idea for a topic. I am trying to balance losing weight, maintaining a healthy life and writing my qualifying all this summer. I would love to connect with other graduate students trying to do the same and relating to the same challenges. Please get in touch with me if you are looking for another grad student to relate to and good luck! Tue, 2 Jun 2009 23:39:24 EST Hi From Chicago . Tue, 2 Jun 2009 10:53:08 EST Hi from NYC! I've been on SP for 4 months now and figured I should join a group like this since finishing the diss is my biggest struggle. I have one more year to go, after uh, a really long time. I actually defended last year but they wanted extensive revisions and another defense. It has been hard getting my energy back up for another push.

Good luck to all! I know what a painful struggle this can be. We'll get there.

58 Thu, 28 May 2009 10:13:51 EST PhD student -- 1 year down! My name is Melissa, and I am working on my MA in History. I am done with coursework officially, but I still have a lot of language work to do while writing my thesis. I plan to learn French and polish up my Latin this summer, then move on to writing my thesis in the fall semester. I gained almost 40 lbs in the first year and a half of my program, and I'm trying to work it all off now. So far, I lost the 15 lbs I gained last semester! Sun, 5 Apr 2009 12:41:59 EST Dissertation Proposal Defense First off - I am so excited that I will be defending my dissertation proposal next month. However, after 2 years of work on it, I am also extremely nervous and I know I will get more stressed as the date draws near. Any suggestions on how to deal with the stress besides exercising? I am an emotional eater, but I'd like to break that cycle since I have lost 31 pounds and have kept it off so far. Tue, 24 Mar 2009 10:32:33 EST Newbie Grad student here! Hi everyone! My name is Kristina and I just started a full time PhD program in Psychology last week. I earned my BS in 1990, my MS last June, and figured there's no time like the present to go all the way! Problem is that I am also a full time crisis counselor, Mom of 3 young children, and a rugby player. Besides the rugby, I don't have much time for working out. That's where this group comes in. Hoepfully I will feeeeeel the motivation and keep pursuing my fitness goals as well as my e... Tue, 17 Mar 2009 14:32:36 EST A blog about a "paper" I came across this blog on the community home page. This is my first post on the team page, so first: hi, all!

I'm posting because I came off what I felt had been a good week: stayed within my ranges, drank lots of water, stuck to my training regimen . . . but then I got on the scale and had gained two pounds.

I'm trying to figure it out, and I guess the gain could be one of two things -- lack of sleep, and restaurants. Huge legal memo due yesterday, so I was up late working. Also, I ate out with friends twice last we... Mon, 9 Feb 2009 18:19:27 EST Hi Everyone! I'm new to the team, but not to Spark. I'm working toward a Ph. D in social/personality psych and I am in my second year of my Master's. I have a lot of hobbies including creative writing, piano, yoga, running, strength training, and other forms of exercise. Anyway, that's enough about me. I look forward to learning about you guys as well! Tue, 3 Feb 2009 11:03:42 EST New. I'm currently finishing my 3rd Master's. I see the team is not that active, but will post when there are new topics. Fri, 30 Jan 2009 22:04:55 EST Thesis or Weight Loss? Do I have to choose? I'm having a hard time focusing on my thesis and losing weight at the same time. More like I'm having a hard time finding time to work out and write my thesis. I'm just so exhausted. Sometimes I feel like I should just wait until after my thesis defense is done and then worry about my workout schedule. But I hate the effects of not working out...

I'm thinking maybe I should change my workout schedule from five days a week to three days a week, and see if that works out for me...... Wed, 28 Jan 2009 23:57:04 EST Leaving the team I am DONE with my degree and graduating next week!!! I wish all much success (in all areas of your lives)! Tue, 20 Jan 2009 13:34:33 EST I'm new! Hi! Sat, 27 Dec 2008 13:51:05 EST Winter Break Today is the 3rd day of my winter break from classes. I am happy to have a break and my lifestyle has been so much more healthy the past three days. I have made time for exercise and I have eaten much more healthy.

I hope to keep some of these changes in the next semester, but I worry that I will not have the time.

How is everyone break going? Fri, 19 Dec 2008 10:46:42 EST Part-time, on-line program starts in January! Hi! I've been using SparkPeople for a while, but am loosing slowly (I'm just now getting into the spirit of compliance with silly things like exercise plans and calorie limits). In January, I start an online MS in Statistics program - I had intended to be working while I did it, but my job was making me a stress monkey. With the DH's blessing, I quit about a month ago and started looking for more work that is more directly related to the degree. (Super fun times in a recession) So now I'm ... Thu, 11 Dec 2008 15:56:29 EST Most Frustrating Grad School Experience? OK - I think it is time to share my pain and hopefully others will join in.

As you have seen from a previous post, I am so close to being able to defend my dissertation proposal and move on with my life. So yesterday I spent a fair amount of time checking to make sure my data lines up, that I filled in the data that was originally missing. I have 4 data sets (for years 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000) with 20 variables for 50 states. I had everything in my SPSS program and saved it. I ... Tue, 18 Nov 2008 07:52:27 EST New...again Just wanted to introduce myself. I actually joined SP in Sept. of '07 under a different user name, but then between getting my masters, teaching, and starting to study for my prelim exam - well, let's just say I wanted a fresh start. My stress level couldn't possibly be any higher, and yet - here I am, once again trying to lose weight (way to add on stress!!!!)

Right now, my goals are simply to read all 3,000 pages by Jan 8th that I need for my prelims, not let my gym membership ... Sat, 15 Nov 2008 12:15:17 EST Dissertation Proposal For those of you who have not gotten to know me, I am working on PhD. in Public Policy. I have been working on my dissertation proposal for close to 2 years now. I am soooo excited because I found out last night that my first 70 pages are ready to go!! I only need to complete the methods section, and I will be able to defend and be an ABD. I want to shout it from the rooftops, but since I did not plan (timewise) on being committed to an asylum, I thought that posting was the next best thing. Wed, 12 Nov 2008 07:21:30 EST Hello friends! I'm a grad student working on my Master's in Occupational Therapy. It's an intense 28-month program and I'm on the down-hill slope now. It's been at a cost though; I've slacked in my physical well-being. I've not been taking care of myself as I should. I hope to make some friends here with similar goals (or not) who can help motivate me to get back in gear! Thu, 30 Oct 2008 13:41:22 EST I need motivation! Help! I'm in the middle of my data analysis for my dissertation, and am becalmed. I'm having a lot of trouble getting back into my old routine of doing something every day. And I'm starting to feel anxious and stressed because I wanted to have completed this step a couple of months ago.

I know about all the things I should do to get myself going again, it's really a problem of getting myself to do them.

What do you do? Mon, 6 Oct 2008 08:43:25 EST Going Crazy! Hey Everyone,

Well there hasn't been much activity on our board and I'm guessing it's because everyone is swamped or feeling overwhelmed like I am. It's definitely creeping closer to midterms! It's at this point in the semester I question whether this is worth all the work, but then I remember my goals and just suffer through it. I took a light course load this summer to give myself a mental break after a very stressful term last spring. I started SP at the end of June. School starts again Tuesday. I'm wondering how those of you who are doing grad school make enough time to exercise and keep track of your eating with SP ... it's been hard enough the past few weeks for me while I've been caught up in family activities. I'm anxious about finding myself in old patterns when the gloom of another Pacific Northwest Fall set... Thu, 21 Aug 2008 15:50:47 EST Getting my PhD and trying to lose weight Hello new teammates! I am currently in my second year of my PhD program in literacy. The first year was crazy--I moved accross country and had ACL surgery in addition to going to school and teaching for the university--just trying to figure out how to get all the work done. This year, I feel a little more prepared and decided it was time to get serious about losing weight and getting healthy.

I am glad to have teammates who are also going to school and understand the insane sche... Thu, 21 Aug 2008 12:17:42 EST Meal ideas? Hey everyone! Thanks so much for the warm welcomes :) Here's another question for ya'll...what are some of your fave meals to bring to class with you (if you do so)? I have a lunchbox, and class ALL DAY a couple days a week, plus an internship...and I don't want to be eating junk food (or spending money, for that matter) every day. I get bored with sandwiches and such pretty quick, so I'm just looking for some of your fave ideas/recipes! :D Sun, 17 Aug 2008 21:39:27 EST New! Hi everyone! I'm a 23 year old grad student living in Cleveland, working on my master's in Social Work. Out of curiosity, does anyone else find it harder to keep on track during the summer than during the school year? I feel like my life is so disorganized in the summer and MUCH more structured during the school year!

Glad to meet all of you! Good luck, we can do it! Sun, 17 Aug 2008 12:07:55 EST not sure Well I am just testing trying to decide if I want to get into a teacher prep program or school counseling. There are so many other options as well. I'm in compsci, but the program requires a lot of biology/biochemistry, so to get us up to speed, they sent us a summer reading assignment that I'm struggling with. The 2nd chapter of the biology textbook was so chemistry heavy I've had to start reading a chem book on the side and I'm starting to feel overwhelmed and anxious.

Anyone else struggling with summer work? Tue, 5 Aug 2008 11:09:35 EST Hi! Looking for some support for August Hi everyone! My name's Lisa, I'm an MA student in history and I'm trying to lose the 25(!) pounds that I put on in the first year of grad school. I find the grad school life just fatal to my health - I ate too much in my first year due to stress, I sat around all day reading, and I was diagnosed with depression in the winter and a side effect of my medication is weight gain. In fact, I gained 20 pounds in about a month after starting to take anti-depressants!

I managed to get thi... Sat, 19 Jul 2008 13:58:43 EST this thesis is killing me So I'm finishing my master's over the summer and am starting a PhD program in the fall. I've been trying to wrap up my thesis for weeks, but I haven't been able to focus and now it's due this Friday and my advisor is only just starting to look at my rough draft. I know, I know, it's just a master's thesis, but writing it was still agony. All my habits are a wreck from the experience. I've basically been in, "Just finish the thesis, nothing else matters" mode, so I've been eating junk food... Fri, 18 Jul 2008 23:04:33 EST New Guy in Town... Hi all. I've been a grad student for over 6 six years now. I got out of law school alive and gained my J.D. and 30 extra pounds. I added on another 20 lbs while I was completing my Masters in History. Now I am in a Ph.D. program and I've dropped 40 lbs and I am looking to drop 10-20 more.

It is nice to meet all of you. Drop me a line if you want to chat. I've been a fitness blogger for about a year now, so if you want to know more about me just swing by my blog at
http://to... Thu, 17 Jul 2008 06:35:10 EST Curious - Does Grad School = Weight Gain Just curious about the relationship, if any, between being a graduate student and the tendency to gain weight. My RA and TA assignments meant more sitting and less activity. Add that to sitting and reading and sitting at the computer and I was (am) doomed.

Anyone find that being scholarly (initially) is detrimental to your efforts to stay trim and fit? Wed, 16 Jul 2008 17:52:39 EST Fast Break Challenge for Grad Students Hey everyone,

Summer is here, and motivation is tougher. I REALLY need to read more papers in my field. So I'd like to invite you to join me on an academically-focused Fast Break challenge. I want to read for 1 hour every morning. (If I finish a paper in under an hour, that's fine too. But I doubt that will happen very often!) My goal is to do this for 4 weeks (with Sunday off), and my reward at the end of 4 weeks is to buy a massage for myself at the Uni. (I'm sure my neck & ... Sat, 12 Jul 2008 21:13:05 EST Hi - getting back on track! Hey all, I'm a 3rd year med student. I lost 30lbs last year with spark people but have been maintaining ever since. I'd like to blame stuff like my extracurricular responsibilities, my nat'l licensing/board exam, and now, my busy clinical schedule...but really I know that the biggest part has just been lack of motivation and fear. So, I'm ready to start again and try to lose the last 15lbs and make it into the "healthy" BMI range.

I'm picking up calorie counting/tracking again... Thu, 10 Jul 2008 02:20:43 EST Need advice -- very serious issue How do you go about deciding to leave a Ph.D. program? I don't already have a Master's, so I would change my topic to something I can do in a M.S. and take that and run.

Backstory:

I am in my 3rd year of a Ph.D. in Geology. I have samples to analyze from three years of field seasons (summer 2007, 2008 and 2009). I do not have samples from last year yet, nearly a year later, so if the trend continues, I can expect to have the final year of samples in 2010 sometime, t... Mon, 23 Jun 2008 01:21:30 EST Greetings from MSU I am a late in life graduate student. I started in 2002 while still in the classroom and then retired after a year's education leave. Hey guys,

I don't know if your grad school experience is the same as mine, but things slow down a little bit in the summer because subject pools are smaller, I don't take any formal classes, etc. To keep up the motivation, and not give in to the lazy days, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in starting a challenge to last the summer semester and end when Fall semester begins.

We could do an individual challenge or group teams based on major or college or type... Sun, 11 May 2008 23:08:10 EST Struggling! I am having a really tough week! There have been a couple of end-of-year BBQs, and after two months of healthy eating & staying in my range 95% of the time, I was over by 500 calories yesterday, and 1000 the day before! I also have not exercised this week, though I plan to hit the gym this afternoon.

I am also working on a manuscript (a week overdue at this point) and not getting much help from collaborators. Thu, 8 May 2008 14:14:11 EST Staying Motivated in Grad School One of my favorite quotes is "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing--that's why we recommend it daily."~ Zig Ziglar. Thank you Spark People E-mail!

So I thougth I'd introduce a topic for keeping motivated. Wed, 16 Apr 2008 16:36:40 EST Home Stretch Challenge Well, it's that time of year again. The end of the semester/school year and enough books to read, papers to write and finals to take to give a person heart failure.

During this home stretch, I find that nothing gets done because I'm trying to get everything done, from papers to weekly readings, as well as trying to stay healthy.

If anybody else is interested, I'm hoping to get a "Home Stretch Challenge" going. We spend all this time learning about stress management, but I can't seem to apply it. I have a hard time finding time to exercise in general. I am doing better at eating healthier...until I get to late-night snacking. I also have this terrible habit of just watching tv all night long instead of getting enough sleep or getting up early in the morning to get in exercise. I'm not sure why I do's s... I'm working on my doctorate in clinical psychology. While grad school makes losing those last 15 pounds difficult, I am sure I can do it. Thu, 6 Mar 2008 08:01:03 EST New on board, law school student Hi everyone. I'm a new member, looking to lose about 20 pounds. I lost around 60 in 2003-04 after graduating college, but plateaued after about six months of weight watchers It wasn't helped by switching meds a lot, but I'm back to belly dancing and working out (training for a 60 mile, 3-day charity walk!!), figuring out which meds are right for my body, and back to journaling my food (which I've always tried to do, but hasn't always helped). Hopefully the combo will get me to my goal weight ... Sun, 2 Mar 2008 00:45:02 EST The Graduate Student Life I love grad school, really I do.
