Wed, 20 Apr 2016 16:44:38 EST Hearing Aid mishap My hearing loss is high frequency bilateral sensorineural, so needless to say, hearing aids just don't help me; I tried them twice, once when I was 14 and another when I was about 25. But when I was in high school, I went to brush some hair behind my ear and I accidentally turned up the volume on the hearing aid (but I didn't know it, as the high pitch noise was totally unheard by me). Classmates started looking over my way, towards the window, like something was outside. I suddenly got a ... Tue, 28 Apr 2015 19:00:26 EST Hi Everyone! Hope everyone's having a great weekend! I have high frequency bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, which means I have extreme trouble understanding speech, etc. I can't hear most birds, crickets and the like. With this, of course, I absolutely require closed captioning on TV to understand anything. Really looking forward to the journey ahead, and especially among those who understand what it's like to be hearing impaired. Thank you! Sat, 25 Apr 2015 21:10:57 EST Hi intro! Hi everyone! But, after having our third child, 7 months ago, I was able to start! I'm a CODA and a sign language interpreter for a Video Relay company and also freelance around my area. I'm looking forward to starting this weight loss journey and making new spark buddies to encourage one another! :) Mon, 1 Dec 2014 12:32:54 EST Hello!! Hello, I am Sherbie, 43yrs old. I am from Ontario, Canada. I was born deaf, severe loss in one ear, profound loss in the other. I wear 2 hearing aids (now digital) and lip reads. I have been wearing hearing aids since I was 3 and wore a Phonic Ear (stronger hearing aid) in school for many years. My mom and teacher from the deaf taught me to speak when I was young. I have had many problems with my speech when I was growing up as I didn't talk much in school, had to listen to what teachers... Thu, 23 Jan 2014 00:43:55 EST Hey everyone! My name is Erin, and I have struggled with ear problems and hearing loss my entire life. I have undergone a lot of surgeries, but my most recent one was a reconstructive surgery for my eardrum in my left ear due to cholesteatoma.

It can be very frustrating to have permanent hearing loss. I often have to ask people to speak up or repeat what they say, and I tend to miss a lot of verbal cues. Also, there is not a lot of support for the deaf and HOH in my community. I try not to let ... Mon, 20 Jan 2014 16:27:54 EST Hello Team! Hi I am De Anna, and I am new to this team, but I am not new to SparkPeople. I have always had some level of hearing loss due to spinal meningitis as an infant. However, my hearing dropped dramatically in the last 18 months due to autoimmune diseases. It is now in the severe/profound hearing loss range. I wear hearing aids but, they help mostly with directionality of sounds, not too much with understanding speech any better. Wed, 2 Oct 2013 12:56:03 EST Hi Everyone :) I am a 34 year ole wife and mother and have been HOH pretty much all my life. I have several ear infections as a kid. So many in fact my ear drums ruptured on several different occasions. I also had ear tubes put in 8 times. So needless to say the scarring on my eardrums does not help my hearing at all. Wed, 26 Jun 2013 00:13:16 EST Intro :) Hello all, I'm new to the board. Not only am I HOH but two of my children are, too. All three of us wear hearing aids. We're in the process of learning ASL because my loss is progressive and I'd rather know sign language before I need it. Plus it will help us feel more part of the DHOH community here since almost everyone in our community is completely deaf and signs - we feel like the odd people out having to rely on hearing people to interpret for us. Wed, 5 Jun 2013 10:37:11 EST New! Hello! My name is Courtney Bolin, I am hearing and an interpreter for the Deaf. I live in St Louis. I wanted to introduce myself to the team and tell you how excited I am to find this group! My screen name is becuase my husband is in school to be a paramedic. Doctors put the reason as "sudden deafness". After no sounds for years, I finally was accepted as a "pioneer" for the new Cochlear Implant program here in Canada and had my implant done in Toronto, Canada. It worked great and I've now been using it for about 27 years. Mother always claimed that my sister and I had normal hearing until we had our tonsils and adenoids out..don't know if that is true or not. My hearing is worse than my sister as she has tried the aids but refused to wear them.
I do not know sign language but am looking forward to learning through my grandd... Sun, 1 Mar 2009 13:36:48 EST Hi from Aussie Helli, I've just joined up and I would like to know if there are any Aussie Deaf here, I mean those who use Auslan? I can talk but prefer to sign.
Mon, 26 Jan 2009 02:18:46 EST New girl Hello to all.
I will be very glad to get to know you. I was a bit shy about starting a topic here, but you all seem to be really nice people.

I lost my hearing en December last year, and now I'm starting to cope with it. I was in a car accident, and the meds they did give me to save my life, took most of my hearing away.

Now I have hearing aids, that go piiiiiiiii all the time, and well I miss listening to music most of all.

Now, I want to lose the weight... Sun, 14 Dec 2008 13:51:29 EST Hear the World I came across this organization recently and thought you all might be interested. It is trying to spread the word about what it is like to be HOH and deaf. I wrote to them thanking them for the important work they are doing. They wrote back and are looking for stories of people succeeding in life despite this disAbility.

Sun, 2 Nov 2008 09:22:09 EST Team Leader Hi, I know I am the leader of this group, but I am not around much or hardly at all. I want to step down and give someone else a chance to lead this group. Is anyone interested? Let me know and I can make the change since I am current leader.

Lin :-)
Mon, 20 Oct 2008 04:03:55 EST Anyone out there??? Hi, I am Alle and I am 19 years old. I have had ear problems since the day I was born, I was always in the hospital with severe ear infections, but as I got older the hearing got worse. I know that I am hard of hearing, I am always having to tell people to speak up, or repeat themselves. I too have learned to read lips. I am leary about going to the autiologist to be diagnosed, and get hearing aids. I want to become a police officer or a paramedic, and I am afraid that if I tell them tha... Fri, 3 Oct 2008 16:07:09 EST Hello My journey of hearing loss started about 6 years ago, I used to have above average hearing. A few weeks after the birth of my son, I was driving home from my check-up and felt a tickle on my neck- there was blood pouring out of my ear. I hadn't had any pain that day, but I woke up unable to hear, as though my ear was pressurized on an airplane. I went straight to the doctor's office and had them check it out and discovered my drum had perforated, and long story short- I had a tumor in there t... Thu, 29 May 2008 03:42:21 EST new member so glad i came across this board. I'm 32, was born with hearing loss and wear aids for each. I've worn hearing aids since i was 5 yrs old. Hi, I am 29 and the Wellness Director for the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Nashville, TN. All of my friends and family are Deaf and most of my life is in ASL. My mother-in-law is Deaf-Blind so am trying to learn Braille too...that is hard! I am not yet diagnosed with hearing loss but am going to Dr on the 31st to get tested for Meneire's.

Anyway, I am trying to lose weight. Mon, 3 Mar 2008 20:21:53 EST So glad I have found you Dear ones, I am so happy to have found you all. I have had quite the rough journey thorugh this hearing loss "challenge" and now as we can all see have gotten quite obese, too. I am a "just a great substituting" teacher. My hearing had gotten so bad and with the tinnitus (sie effect of a surgery) I was struggling with my job as a teacher. Not to mention losing sleep with the tinitus. I am very thankful for the better hearing aides with the little inheritance from my parents. I didn't rea... Sun, 2 Mar 2008 02:58:28 EST Having trouble Hey everyone!!!! I haven't formally inntroduced myself. My name is Tiffany,26, and need to lose a little more than 50lbs. My problem is I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between calories burned and fat calories burned. When I'm doing my fitness tracker I enter the total cals. burned. My sister (who is on sp also) informed me that I should be entering just the fat cals. burned, so now I'm just curious wich way is the right way. Mon, 18 Feb 2008 11:24:41 EST Another introduction Hey all. My name is Chip, and I've been deaf for just a tad over 7 years now (profound deafness due to bacterial meningitis). I've got a lateral CI in my right ear, but I rarely use it anymore as it just doesn't give me any decent results.

I've been involved with my local Deaf Community for a few years now, and am trying to learn a lot more ASL than the relatively small amount that I squeak by on. I was very glad to find a good Deaf team here also :-) Sun, 17 Feb 2008 14:25:21 EST Hi everyone! Any CI members? Hey guys! I'm excited to have found this group!

I am 34, deaf as of three years ago (sudden on-set) and use a cochlear implant.

I've got 50 lbs to lose, and I've found myself using my CI as an excuse not to seems that I sweat so much that I'm always damaging it, which means sending it back to the company for a replacement (a real hassle).

I know - just take it off to exercise...but I need music or something!

Anyone out there with 50... Sun, 17 Feb 2008 11:48:10 EST Hello My name is Melanie..31 years old. I am HOH and wear 2 in the ear hearing aids. Not sure when you can say my hearing loss started. Because of a hearing test in the first grade is when I learned of it. My right ear is my worst ear. Fri, 1 Feb 2008 22:14:49 EST Hi Everyone! My name is Michelle. I'm deaf and lost my hearing when I was 3... it's been progressive through my life and now I'm profoundly deaf but can still benefit with 2 hearing aids. I'm possibly getting a cochlear implant this year. DARS sent me for the testing a year ago, and I was pregnant at the time. I'm really hoping it goes through soon.

I have a 9 month old that keeps me incredibly busy. Before I was a mom, I taught deaf education. I'm a SAHM now.

I gained 60 pound... I wear over the ear hearing aids and whenever I wear headphones they cause them to whistle.

What do you do so that you can listen to music while you walk or listen to books on tape?

I like to walk but it gets boring when I can't listen to anything.

Does anyone know of any particular earphones that don't cause hearing aids to whistle? Do you use an IPOD? How are you able to use it?
Thanks,
nita

Wed, 2 Jan 2008 09:38:43 EST New to the team Hello I am HOH and need hearing aids in both ears, I am soon going to be having WLS sometime in Feb or March, I have become pretty good @ reading lips but @ times that is very hard to do as well. Mon, 1 Oct 2007 10:50:41 EST Hearing aid broke.... My hearing aid quit on me Sunday. I was going to church and it started that whistling and wouldn't quit for nothing. I had that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach and knew that was it for my hearing aid is at least 18 years old. My other quit awhile back like 9 years ago and I am so stubborn that I thought well I can hear fine with just the one so I never went in and got another one.
Well.. So, watch it anyways. ;) Power to the people - this IS democracy after all isn't it? Get informed!! Mon, 17 Sep 2007 16:34:20 EST Hi There! I never expected to find so many unique SparkTeams when I joined SparkPeople. How wonderful! I'm gearing up to turn 40 next year. I've worn hearing aids since 5th grade (I think I'm on my 5th or 6th set!) I know what you mean about being teased and people being frustrated if they have to repeat themselves more than twice. I've been fortunate with my family, though. They didn't treat me in a way that made me feel "handicapped". When I was in high school and the vocational rehabilitation... Mon, 17 Sep 2007 12:10:00 EST New to the team, deaf from NF2 Hi folks, just a quick hi. I don't come on very often b/c I'm in school and work full time, I just can't seem to find the time to work out, participate on the boards and teams, etc., so you won't hear much from me until after May 2008 when I graduate.

I went deaf 1 week before my first day of college back in 1995 due to neurofibromatosis type 2. I started with about a 60% loss in my right ear and about 80% in my left ear (was born deaf in my left ear). 2001, I went completely ... Have any of you with the hearing loss ever answered yes to a question you only heard a few words of and about got yourself into a sticky situation?
I was talking to a guy on the phone and he asked if I wanted him to come over and do the "wild thing" with him and I thought he said something else so I said "yes" like a nut.
He came over alright and talk about ready to die from embarassment when I found out why he came over. I've been browsing through the different teams and was really surprised(but happy) to see a team for the hard of hearing. I'm not deaf, but I do have a lot of difficulties at times with my hearing. I stopped going to the hospital when I was 18 thinking I knew best, but my hearing got worse as time went on. 3 Years ago My hearing went in my left ear, I developed an infection, (my e... Mon, 13 Aug 2007 09:51:10 EST Shake It UP!! Okay, I'm getting myself back into the swing of things with my own weight loss program. I know this group has been too quiet for too long. I notice that a couple of you are trying to post regularly and I commend you for that. I see others in our group who haven't been around for as long as I've been away!! Not good. If we are SERIOUS about losing weight, getting healthy and eliminating our needs for medications, then we need to STEP IT UP!

Is everyone with me on this? If so,...
