SparkPeople We Love Nia! Team Messageboard Through movement we find health! For anyone who is a Nia addict or fan! Check out if you'd like to know what it is! :-) SparkPeople We Love Nia! Team Messageboard What is your favorite Nia routine and why? There are so many wonderful Nia routines out there, each one different from the next. What is your favorite Nia routine that you have danced to and what is it that makes it so special to you? For me, I have to say that the routine "Passion" is totally my favorite so far. The focus of the routine is "dancing to the music", so I really connect with this! I feel so good when I dance it and teach it and I get an amazing workout! I feel both energized and relaxed when I step out of my Nia pra... Sat, 2 Jun 2012 23:39:27 EST What is your preference? What 'kind' of Nia do you like? Choreographed or freestyle moves/routines?
Personally I like choreographed the majority of the sessions . As far as freestyle I like short bursts such as freestyle walking. I love the flow and repetition of the moves, my body naturally flowing through them, gravity and life force taking over.
What are your favs? Sun, 26 Feb 2012 10:36:09 EST Just starting to learn! Hey everyone! I'm just starting to learn about Nia! Thu, 16 Feb 2012 15:03:12 EST Spreading Nia-question I've been telling EVERYONE I can about Nia and encouraging them to check it out. That includes here on Sparkpeople! 99% of people have no idea what I'm talking about and I live in a city where it is offered quite a few places....
Do people you discuss Nia with know what it is already? Wed, 15 Feb 2012 19:40:02 EST Just heard of NIA today. I just saw a reference to nia on another thread and did some looking at their website. Wow -- it looks like the perfect form of exercise for me. I love to dance and have done a little bit of yoga and pilates. Haven't done any martial arts except what is on ExerBeat. I like the idea of combination of structure and free form. I ordered the introductory DVD and the book and am really looking forward to this! I tried to find a class, but the nearest one to me is 700 miles away! Thu, 2 Feb 2012 13:55:09 EST Word for the year At our last Nia class for the year our instructor suggested each person chose a word or a mantra for the year. She and her students have done this for several years.

I probably rolled my eyes and thought this is not for me. However, within the first song of our movement, my word hit me -- BALANCE.

I need balance in everything I do. I am an all or nothing type of person. I either work out all the time or am lax. I eat healthy or I overindulge to the point of regain... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 11:25:55 EST New on Spark, New-ish to Nia Hello Nia people,
I am writing to inrtoduce myself, I am fairly new to Sparkpeople and I have been practing Nia for a few months now. I have fallen into the deep end with Nia, and if I had the time and money I would do it everyday. Right now I try to go 3-4 times a week and it is the highlight of my day.
I practise with 2-3 different teachers and each one bring their own unique style and experience.
Tonight, Karen Bossioneault who is a black belt teacher, lead us through a clas... Hello lovely Nia ladies!!! I had fallen off the wagon in September with the arrival of my fiance from Kentucky. Too much eating out and no exercise. The only thing I did was go take Nia class and teach Nia three times a week. I think without Nia, I would have been totally stressed out, overwhelmed (and I probably would have gained more weight then I actually did). So, I was just wondering how Nia helps you stay on track and keep your focus? Share!! Mon, 3 Oct 2011 13:18:21 EST Staying on track over the holiday Can you believe that it's September 1st already?!?!? Where in the world did the summer go? Well, this weekend we will most likely be going to BBQs and eating food that may wreak our healthy eating plan. What are your plans for staying on track over the Labor day weekend? Any advice you can offer the team would be appreciated! Thu, 1 Sep 2011 13:00:29 EST Thinking of taking a Nia training? I've taken the White Belt training in New York City with Winalee Zeeb and Caroline Kolhs and now I teach Nia in New Jersey. I must say that the experience was amazing! Even if you are not interested in teaching, the 7 days of training is inspiring and really makes you reconnect with yourself, with others and the world around you. I loved the experience and plan on continuing my education till I can earn my Nia Black Belt. Anyone all set to take a training? Thinking about signing up for ... Tue, 23 Aug 2011 15:26:25 EST I'm the New Co-Leader! Hi everyone! My name is Susan and I am the new co-leader of our "We Love Nia" Sparkteam. A bit about me....well....I'm 33 years old, originally from New Jersey, recently engaged to a handsome and amazing Army staff sargeant and I love Nia! I earned my White Belt in February of 2010 and started teaching this past Januray. Right now, I have two classes, but I'm always looking to expand and bring Nia to more and more people. Next year I'll be relocating to Oklahoma (my fiance is being trans... Fri, 12 Aug 2011 11:52:09 EST Discovering Nia for the first time Nia has been around since the 80's, but there are still so many people out there who have never heard of it. How and when did you discover Nia? What were your thoughts after your first class? Fri, 12 Aug 2011 08:04:44 EST Setting My Focus & Intent Aloha Nia-Sparks Community -

My name is Kiwi Heilman, I am a Nia Brown Belt from Hawaii, currently living in King George, VA.

I LOVE using the Sparks program both for myself and students who also need guidance, encouragement and a plan for shifting habits into healthy relationships with food, movement and the body in general.

Right now, I am in process of re-aligning my nutrition for myself and my family... and dancing again!

Blessings & Joy :0) ... Mon, 25 Jul 2011 07:54:06 EST Celebrating being pain free Nia is my healer. Two weeks ago I received my Nia Technique book by mail. As I was working my way through the chapter on stability and mobility, I thought to myself, "I am just #####." Thirty years ago my feet were broken badly, my left foot was close to being amputated, the lower left leg was shattered, my right ankle was broken, and I had other injuries. I have had pain every day in my feet and ankles. I rarely take medicine and just try to deal with the pain.

So, the joy is... Sun, 12 Jun 2011 11:14:54 EST Using Nia throughout the day Anyone know of other sites or places to get more information on Nia and routines? I have been three times to Nia class and am finding that I think about it and am using the moves in some of my other workouts! Fri, 13 May 2011 10:14:14 EST Hello Nia lovers!! Hi to everyone! My name is Susan and I am a Nia White Belt instructor from New Jersey! I just love Nia! It has really changed my life! Right now, with my fiancé deployed to Afghanistan, teaching my Nia classes and working on the Nia routines has really been the only thing that has kept me happy! It is truly a powerful thing! I'm excited to join the group and can't wait to discuss Nia with all of you!! Tue, 1 Mar 2011 10:47:36 EST Dance Through Life? One of the amazing things Nia does for me is to remind me to "dance through life."

Yesterday I walked to coffee with two friends. The skies were dark, the rain was slashing sideways, the wind whipping so hard that umbrellas were turned inside out. Walking down the city sidewalks, puddles spread like little lakes. The gutters were running like spring creeks. And I danced: over the puddles, the gutters, the flying last leaves.

Did you dance today? Somewhere? Somehow... Wed, 16 Feb 2011 13:19:04 EST Nia, Nia! Bounceboun ncebounce! A Nia group here? This site has everything! Just got home from my Nia class here in Seattle. Sweaty! I've been doing Nia since March of this year, and have been on SP for, oh, maybe 4 days. Love both! Sat, 9 Oct 2010 16:49:18 EST Recommend a Nia DVD? This past weekend I ended up doing a workout at home due to poor planning. I would much rather have been doing a Nia DVD instead of TaeBo, the only thing I actually own.

Can anyone recommend one or two in particular? I'd love to get something with some more tribal beats, definitely more high energy.

Thanks in advance! Sun, 31 Jan 2010 17:02:25 EST Ventura Nia Center In my quest to continue keeping Nia in my life, even when I'm out of town, I found an amazing Nia center in Ventura, CA.

There were about 10 people in the class, taught by Kathy something-I-don't-remember. Every one of the class members was warm and inviting to me, perhaps even a little surprised that someone from Seattle would visit their center.

I have to say, going home to visit my folks now holds an added element of joy as I know that I will be back here anytime I... Fri, 1 Jan 2010 22:40:24 EST New to Nia, Back to Spark Glad to find this SparkTeam!

I started doing Nia a little over two months ago, taking a class, and am completely in love with it. Even at my weight, this class helps me appreciate the body I have, to actually feel comfortable in my own skin. I also have never enjoyed working out so much.

I am newly recommitted to myself, including using Spark and Nia as tools to get me where I'm going. Looking forward to sharing the joy of this journey with others.

As an ... Sat, 28 Nov 2009 17:41:08 EST 52 Moves Woo! In class last night, we did the 52 moves, and it was challenging but lots of fun. I'm a little sore this morning but other than that feel great. Since starting my Nia routine, the scale says that I've dropped 3 pounds!!! Yay! How is everyone else doing? Fri, 23 Oct 2009 15:28:32 EST new to nia I'm new to Nia and love it. My plan is to attend a class at least twice a week and to do the 5 stages every morning. This kicked off today, and I feel great! Mon, 19 Oct 2009 11:29:50 EST What's UP, NIA PEOPLE?!?! I'm SO GLAD I found this Nia Team but I'm SO BUMMED it seems so small and inactive! I used to do weekly Nia classes when I lived in Wrigleyville in Chicago, but have not done it in a WHILE!

I love NIA!!

Let's spread the Nia love and grow this SparkTeam! Tue, 15 Sep 2009 16:13:29 EST Welcome to our new team members Welcome PAMBI1, KINI08, & JSABRINA to our Nia team. I am so glad you joined. I have been so busy that I have not been able to log on as often as I would like. I hope you visit often and share all of your Nia experiences. Sat, 21 Mar 2009 21:33:59 EST Questions about Nia I saw the posts of the names of different routines and I was wondering... Does anyone know if the videos at the NiaNow site have combinations of these different routines you speak of?

If you're familiar with the videos... which one is your favorite and why?

Thanks! Sun, 8 Mar 2009 13:34:12 EST Joy Friday night Nia was Fun Friday. It was not a specific dance. We just focused on finding joy and guess what...I FOUND IT!!! Thu, 5 Feb 2009 07:14:07 EST My Nia studio is going away I am so bummed. My Nia studio is going away. I love that place. Soul Fitness has been my place for about a year. When I first started going, someone told me that it would be closing. I pushed that out of my mind, because it is such a wonderful place. There such a great vibe when you walk thru the door. I got a letter that stated with much 'gratitude' the studio is closing. I admire her for being gracious for having the opportunity, but it is sad. I am going to miss that class so much... Wed, 4 Feb 2009 16:18:36 EST Fantasia I danced Fantasia on Friday. It was fun and very challenging. I am not sure if I truly 'love' it as much as Amethyst, but it was definitely fun. Wed, 4 Feb 2009 16:12:30 EST 'Sexi" by Carlos Has anyone danced Sexi yet? It is going to take me a couple of times doing it to really say that I love it. So far, I have not found a Nia routine that I don't like. Sexi takes more thought and concentration for me to get the steps. Tue, 27 Jan 2009 12:54:33 EST Friday night Nia This past Friday we danced Opal. I think that is my all time favorite. It is so freeing and sensual. I cannot get the music out of my head.

A couple of weeks ago we danced Sexy. That was fun, but a little quirky. The teacher said the first time she danced it, she felt funny. But the more she dances it the more normal it feels.

What dances have you done in the past? Tue, 27 Jan 2009 12:48:28 EST 2008 New Years Resolutions My New Years Resolutions are to lose 100 lbs and to work on being the best me I can be. I am one of those who jumps in with both feet and then get bored.

I will focus on doing activities that do not bore me. Walking on a treadmill is boring. I will do it for a week and then I am done. Taking Nia classes does not bore me, but I can only fit 1 class a week into my schedule.

Tell me what are your plans! Thu, 22 Jan 2009 11:24:36 EST I'm the new co-leader! Hello everyone. I am the new co-leader of We Love Nia!. I love Nia and have been taking Nia for about 1 year. It is one of the best exercises I have ever done. It does not feel like exercise. It is pure joy. I smile through the class all the time.

Take a moment to re-introduce yourselves. I can't wait to meet everyone! Thu, 22 Jan 2009 10:59:22 EST Let's get this team back on track! I know there are a lot of you NIA lovers out there, and this team has been quiet too long! Let's get chatting!!

I'm not the leader, so can't do the administrative stuff that a leader can, but I can start chatting!!

Do we have any white belts out there?? What about blue belts??

I just love NIA more and more as I do it! Tue, 3 Jun 2008 17:49:08 EST New Years Resolutions? Do yah make 'em? Did ja make any? Mine have nothing to do with losing weight:

Experience more Joy and pleasure in '08.

Wanna share yours?

love
ag3 Wed, 9 Jan 2008 06:55:08 EST Nia and Exercise Tracking Does anyone track Nia in the sparkpeople exercise tracker? How do you do it? When I looked in the system I saw line dancing and belly I did 50 minutes of line dancing and 10 minutes of yoga just to plug something in...any better ideas??? Sat, 29 Dec 2007 14:44:33 EST DreamWalker Do you guys remember doing this routine? It has "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" on it and many very ambient songs. What is your favorite thing about it?

xo r Mon, 19 Nov 2007 06:33:07 EST Are you new? Introduce yourself! So glad that you are here! Tell us who you are and any other stuff you'd like to say!

xo aquagirl Fri, 16 Nov 2007 13:30:25 EST White Belt Hi guys, I am finally back and am training for my white belt in November. FINALLY. Has anyone else gone through the training? love and light, r Mon, 24 Sep 2007 21:25:55 EST Favorite NIA experience! I had the wonderful opportunity to go on a NIA retreat this weekend. The plan was to spend Friday and Saturday night in a retreat center, but Thursday night the center burned down in a freak accident (All people and animals affiliated with the center were fine)!

Our amazingly resilient NIA instructor organized a day retreat for all day Saturday. We drove about 2 hours north of Atlanta towards the mountains to the "Center on Warwoman"- which seemed perfect for NIA!

Th... Tue, 7 Aug 2007 10:32:16 EST What's your favorite thing about NIA?? Mine is how it mixes simple steps with amazing free dance. I've never been much of a "dancer", but I feel that way in NIA! And I sweat like crazy!!!!! Thu, 7 Jun 2007 23:48:04 EST How do you quantify Nia for Sparkpeople? Nia is so many things. I refer to it as my dance class casually, but it's modern dance and yoga and tai chi and this and that and the other. The variety that makes it so fun also makes it hard to categorize on this site. What do you do?

For me, it depends on how strenuous the class was. Today I classified it as 45 minutes of belly dancing and 15 minutes of kickboxing. Fri, 11 May 2007 04:46:38 EST Favorite Routine? I'm new to NIA but my first routine was called "Diva" and it was sooo awesome. Yesterday was "Pony Up" and I cannot wait to find out what tomorrow's is!

Have you gals lost any weight and/or toned up with NIA? Thanks! Tue, 24 Apr 2007 22:58:39 EST Sprained Ankle So I sprained my ankle last week and have had to stay off the foot, needless to say I am in Dance withdrawal. I did hte last 10 mins of a Nia class yesterday, the floor work part, and it was great, but I miss sweating. Someone told me I could do the whole class on an exercise ball. Go figure. I will try it though, I am sorta desperate. Anyone else with this kind of experience?
xo a Tue, 17 Apr 2007 10:55:01 EST Sweat your Prayers My NIA class today wasn't NIA, but an hour of free dance based on the rhythms of Gabrielle Roth, who wrote SWEAT YOUR PRAYERS. It was VERY intense and interesting!

Has anyone else ever done that??

Pam Sun, 1 Apr 2007 21:19:37 EST The 13 Joints Okay, I will give you a few, then you give me some and we'll see if we can cover all 13:
Ankles, hips, wrists.... Wed, 28 Mar 2007 20:41:08 EST Exciting news! I found out this morning in my NIA class that next Monday, the place in town that offers a lot of classes is having an open house with a NEW routine by Carlos, and other free classes. I may get VERY tired!!!!!!!!! 211

Pam Wed, 21 Mar 2007 16:10:31 EST How did you find out about NIa? I was just wondering how everybody found Nia. I found it though the blog of an author. Dianne Sylvan wrote a great book called *The Body Sacred* (among others). She lives in TX and talked on her blog about this amazing exercise class she'd discovered called Nia. There aren't any classes in my area, but I went online and got the Dvd, the book, and one of the older VHS videos. I'm loving it! Thu, 15 Mar 2007 15:56:21 EST Where is everyone?? Hey, where are all the NIA lovers??? We've got to figure out a way to introduce everyone to this fabulous exercise.

I've been able to go pretty regularly up until this week. I had to skip because of work and I hated to. At least spring break is coming up. Maybe I can go 5 days a week!! Fri, 2 Mar 2007 15:01:33 EST Can you name the 9 elements of NIA??? That's what our class was about today-- 3 kinds of dance (jazz, modern, Duncan), 3 kinds of marial arts (Tai chi, Aikido, ????) and 3 healing arts (yoga, Feldenkrais, and Alexander Technique). We played with all those energies. FUN!!!!!!!!!! Wed, 21 Feb 2007 23:33:47 EST How's it going? Hiya! How are you doing today? Good, I hope. This week is school vacay week for my children, so we are off to a museum today and I am looking forward to having the energy to chase them around! LOL. Also thinking of how much walking we'll do! Hooray! How bout you guys? xo aqua Tue, 20 Feb 2007 08:17:01 EST What's your favorite Nia focus? I think right now mine is the "back body" and initiating movement from there.
:-) Ag Thu, 15 Feb 2007 08:22:56 EST Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you all are having a great one. Big snowstorm here in the NorthEast.
How are you all doing today! love and hugs, aqua 129 Wed, 14 Feb 2007 13:29:59 EST How often do you do Nia? So usually I get it in 2 times a week, and if I have time 3 times. Any less than that and I am in serious withdrawal. I am a yoga teacher and have a crazy schedule with kids, etc, but I am a passionate Nia student. It really uplifts my moods, it's like therapy! Thu, 8 Feb 2007 05:34:53 EST INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE! Hey there, I created this team because I was triyng to find anyone else who loves to do Nia like me. So introduce yourself here, and feel free to post anything that crosses your mind.
