I started hiking about a year ago. I just hiked Mt. Whitney! I don't normally post about negative things in my life, but I want to share how far I've come. I have fibromyalgia. Over three and a half years ago, I was back up over 200 pounds, again. In fact I weighed over 215 pounds. My weight has yo-yoed up and down between ages 19 and 41, gaining more and more each time. The weight gain wou... I love to do outdoor activities and primarily hike and bike. You can browse through my blog to see some of the hikes i"ve done here in Alaska. We have a limited hiking season so I hit it pretty hard while the weather allows and then switch to snowshoes in the winter. Thinking about trying cross-country skiing this winter. I am training for a couple of long races, including my first marathon and I am wondering and looking for any tips on how hiking can fit in. I sometimes have to choose between my hiking friends and my LSD and I wonder if I have to. We do some pretty good mileage when we hike.
Next week they are doing a hike that I really want to do but I have my last and longest LSD on Saturday of 15.5 miles before my 18.12 Challenge. I pointed out that it's getting to be the same on the shorter hikes in and around our area. We assume that part of the blame could be the "hand held" technology that the youth today so need to have (so they think). I pointed out that parents could be part of the problem, because of the complacency... When I hike, I wear my spark tracker and usually I just go by that calorie burn to calculate what to eat during that day. BUT ... out of curiosity I checked the activity tracker and if I calculate my calorie burn by the guide there, the calorie difference is a little over 1,000 calories. I don't want to eat too little, but I sure don't want to eat too many calories. I guess my question is, how do you all calculate your... I already love camping and the outdoors, and since I live in Herkimer County, NY (just south of the Adirondacks), hiking seems to be a perfect fit. Hopefully this winter will be short and sweet because I am eager to get out and explore! :) Sat, 4 Jan 2014 07:48:40 EST Hello http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x749x56182538 Happy New Year! I love to head to the mountains to backpack and camp. I think hiking allows you to see places that aren't seen by many and enjoy the greatest views there are. So I'm an interesting adaptive/hybrid type of Hiker. While I prefer hiking mountains and conquering new elevations, I don't necessarily have the time to do that that I used to. I've kind of adapted my activities, then, to mud and obstacle races, which involve a good bit of hiking, and also running and upper body. I still yearn for the trails, though. I had the goal of hiking Mt. Whitney next summer and was on my way but my schedule shifted. It's still a goal, just maybe not this up... I love to hike, just don't get to do as much of it as I'd like to in recent years. However, my archaeology group is getting together to do several different hikes this summer - two thi sweek! I'm so excited to be getting back at it. I was also pretty excited to see a hiking "team" on spark :) Sun, 16 Jun 2013 23:12:05 EST Hi New member http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x749x53560669 Hi team,

I am a new member. My name is Mark and I am a boy scout leader. I enjoy walking in the woods and would like to learn more about backpacking. Sat, 1 Jun 2013 12:40:32 EST New Member - First post http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x749x53510120 I love hiking and used to do a lot of it. Last time I went to the north shore with a girlfriend and we hike a number of trails in search of the local waterfalls...it was a blast and such an adventure. I don't have another one planned yet, but hope to get more walking in at a few parks and a few new ones as well to enjoy some time out with the boys. I wish it would quit raining around here so I could enjoy it more. I find it hard to gauge how this compares with what other people do. We went quite slowly last week - average 2mph - because bits of the path were very muddy or uneven. Tomorrow I'm off hiking again, on my own as my hiking buddy isn't well. On a 10 mile hike, would you expect to go 3mph? Less? It recently struck me that hiking is something I can do for my cardio. I hate any form of exercise, I find it quite boring, but I have always loved being in the woods. From the age that my mother finally let me go out alone, I spent hours in my grandparents land in the woods. When I got older I started hitting the trails in the mountains close to home and of course life happened and I only did it sporadically until not at all.

So I consider... I'm a dreamer, but I intend to reach a greater level of fitness and quench this nagging desire to participate "for real." Sure, I hike, but too slow to really enjoy the scenery at the top long enough. I want to get in shape and enjoy those panoramic vistas a little longer! Looking forward to getting to know you a little better too, and hope to be actively involved as much as I can. Getting heal... We are so lucky in this area to have a huge, forested natural area right outside town, great place to hike and lots of trails. It was an easy 2 miler, but I still had fun and I met 3 new interesting people whom I have no other thing in common with other than we live near Portland and we are Sparkers!

My dog is almost 7, but he usu... My feet have gone wider with age. Any suggestions. I don't have a large budget, mainly on a shoestring. So any sales or discounts will help. My last pair was Northface which I like alot. However I haven't found them in wide. I don't get to go out and shop much. And I mostly hate shopping.
Also we carry canteens. Army surplus. Haven't tried the camel baks. But I imagine we all have something we'd like to get ready for.

I'm planning to track some of my progress here. I'd love company. Just name your goal and what you're doing to get ready. I had a few snacks in my pack, and those were barely enough. But I made it 5 miles, and feel really proud of myself and enjoyed the cooling effects of the light rain.

What do you all do for evening hikes? At the end of the month my family is going camping in Camden Hills State Park on the Maine coast. There are a few nice paths leading directly out of the park, but do any of you have any experience in the area and have any suggestions for good day trips? We're open to traveling a little bit out of the way for a nice day hike. I have been walking around my neighborhood. And today I challenged myself to a hike nearby that mimics mountain terrain. I'm in a hilly region, but not mountainous. This hike was so tough! It was hot at 5pm, and the elevation gains of about 560ft were DRASTIC compared to my neighborhood hikes of 163 ft. We live in southern iowa and take many weekend hikes. It has been challenging in many ways. This summer has been hot hot. Since we take our dogs sometime 2 and sometimes 4 we not only have to watch ourselves but also the dogs. One of our dogs doesn't know when to quit so she has to be monitored. She got too hot once this summer and now we don't take any chances. 2 big dogs and 2 little dogs are our friends. Little dogs like to go however they get tired. One has curly ... My local one will be 28.3 miles on the Appalachian Trail at the end of October. The organization has provided a training schedule with hikes on Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Saturday. The long hike being on Saturday. But they only really mention crosstraining on one day. I feel like this won't prepare me well enough, and I take my commitment pretty seriously. This weekend is the kick off trainin... Sun, 29 Jul 2012 19:50:29 EST Crap! We were making decent time up the hill, but after I took a small stumble due to a bout of sickness that made my head swim, I just couldn't go on.

In the future, we did learn a good lesson, though. I'm an American living overseas in Germany. I am just getting into hiking. There are so many wonderful hiking trails to choose from here. My husband and I just did a 12.5k trail yesterday and we are hoping the rain clears up today so that we can do another long hike. My dogs really enjoy it too so this is definitely something I can see us continuing to do even once weight loss is not part of the picture.

We really enjoyed ourselves yesterday. I'm originally from Colorado and I have always loved the outdoors; camping and fishing and hiking. I'm hoping some of you can help me with a question. Hubby and I have found ourselves short on energy nearly every time we hike. We talk good snacks with us (except maybe the last time when I left them behind) and we eat any time we have a sign of hunger, but I think we're not staying in front of the hunger enough. We had to turn around on a hike in April. The hike turned out to be more than we expected and I think I ran out of energy largely because I had been too low on calorie... I was 16 and hiking with my best friend who was 15. It's a long story but the keywords are: gorge, river rocks, sprained ankle, banged up elbow, raging thunderstorm, slippery clay trail, and ooh LOOK a cave.

Let me tell you, 2 teenage girls who don't come home from a hike create major excitement like you would not believe. The excitement apparently ramps up when theirJeep is located at a trailhead where, it should be noted we SAID we were going. We were found the next... Thu, 29 Mar 2012 02:15:33 EST Phone app vs GPS http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x749x47238754 So I'm spending a couple days hiking and camping next week. I've seen phone apps that track your route and elevation, but if I'll be in a canyon will it even work? I'm also concerned about my phone's battery life. My aunt just bought a handheld GPS for her hiking trips. Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm going to REI this weekend. Also, if i bought a GPS I would use it on ALL my hikes, not just this trip. ;-) Sat, 24 Mar 2012 10:22:06 EST Women's hiking / backpacking boots? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x749x47130027 Hi all... I am 46 and I have a 23 y/o DD and 6 y/o Springer Spaniel who are my world! I have to say I am a fair weather outdoors woman, so most of the year, I am not up in the hills and mountains in my neck of the woods!

This year I have committed t... So happy to find this group! My favorite thing in the world is to get lost in the woods. In recent years my weight has skyrocketed out of control and made hiking difficult for me. However, I'm bound & determined to find away back to all of the things I love to do. Can't wait to meet all of you & support each other on this journey.
Deborah Sun, 11 Mar 2012 10:51:48 EST Greetings from Southwestern Illinois! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x749x46927086 So thankful to have found this team! Love all of the hiking and adventures around the area. I'm on the committee with our local boy scout troop so we get out a lot (we schedule two outings per month). Just built (and slept in) snow caves this weekend. It was definitely an adventure. We had blizzard conditions for part of it. Never thought about how tricky it would be to get into the sleeping bag, compared to a tent. Glad we did it...something we'll always remember. Looking forward t... But I'm also an AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) member. I have a gym membership but I much rather get my exercise in the great outdoors. I also enjoy skiing, biking, kayaking and any outdoor sports really. Anyhow the AMC has some great hikes in the NY NJ and CT region. I recently injured myself skiing so I will probably need to take a break from everything for awhile until it's fixed. See you all around on the message boards. Last month while on vacation, we took a fun, little hike with the kids. It was just about a half mile or so up to a water fall. The kids love playing in the icy water. We were close to the end when I slipped on some gravel and broke my leg. I finished the hike with a little help from my husband and went for x-rays. That was a month ago so I'll be getting my boot off soon. I'm counting down the days when I'll be back on the trails! Last sunday did a 8 hour hike and everything hurt after!! I swam easy after I got home and was pretty good the next day. I have been doing baby hikes for about an hour to stay in shape for our next 3-4 hour hike tomorrow but I am wondering, do most people here rest when still a bit sore, or push through the pain and go again??

My back was hurting today during my short hike and I came home... I've been hiking for the last couple of months with a local church group. It's been real tough but there's no other feeling of when you finally reach the ending point! Last month we went to Zion, Utah for some great hikes. Look forward to learning more about hiking! I want to loose weight and get healthier so I can enjoy longer hikes and paddles. I have been hiking mostly in NY and NJ and recently a few days in Vermont which is gorgeous. I am excited about being a member of the team!
Mon, 19 Jul 2010 11:30:54 EST
