My name is Patty Melton and I am new to running. A co-worker of mine ran her first half marathon earlier in the year and it made me wonder if I could run my usual walking route and lunch and I did it. When I realized how far I had run I thought that perhaps I could run a 5K. I am proud to say that I ran my first 5K on Mothers Day. I have not scheduled another one, but found a half marathon that I would like to try next year. The run was this past weekend and I am in no shape t... Wed, 18 May 2016 21:51:20 EST At What Point Are We No Longer "Beginners"? Let me start by saying I'm not looking reassurance. I'm comfortable with where I'm at in my running career. I'm more interested in other peoples' perspective about their own thoughts on the title.

At what point do we cease to be "beginning runners"? I've been running much longer than I've been doing triathlon. I've done a half-dozen triathlons, ranging from an indoor triathlon to an Olympic-distance I did last fall to celebrate my 50th birthday; I don't consider myself a "beginning... Sun, 7 Feb 2016 10:20:10 EST Serial Beginner Hi everyone,

I'm a serial beginner running, I run for a few months then stop for even more months. Then start again. I've been doing this for over 20 years now.

Furthest I've run is 16k in just less than 2 hours I was training for a half marathon and only six weeks away from the run date and my work took over. My bp for 5k is 32.33.

I am currently running using a MiCoach Pacer (I bought it several years ago for my Fiancé and he never used it) and I truly lo... Fri, 16 Oct 2015 03:06:03 EST My running is like my weight used to be I had been one of those people that gains weight at this time of year, starts to focus on losing it so when the warmer weather is here, I'm at my target weight. I've been maintaining for, I'm not sure how long but it is in my signature. ;)

Anyway... I started C25K back in early 2013 because I wanted to do a particular 5K. On day 3, week 9, I could barely walk by the time I was back home. Short version is that I can't run without knee braces and I still need ice after many work... Wed, 30 Sep 2015 18:46:01 EST Does running cause a saggy chest? Ok, this is going to sound insane. I really want to start a running program. I would eventually like to work up to a marathon. The only problem is I've read in quite a few articles that running can cause droopy breasts or make already droopy breasts worse. This bothers me. I'm just wondering how true it is. Has anyone noticed a problem with this? Wed, 1 Jul 2015 18:28:52 EST Advice on how to speed up my pace I've been running 3-5 miles four times a week for a couple of weeks and recently I've noticed that my pace has slowed down significantly. I am a slow runner but my pace has gone from 10 min/mile to more like 12/13 min/mile. I was curious if anyone had advice on how to get back to my pace or what could be causing this in the first place? Sat, 23 May 2015 17:52:24 EST Looking for a training program for beginner. Hi everyone. So I'm super new to running. I can't run at all. I last attempted running when I was 30 pounds heavier and I hated it. I'm hoping now that I've lost the weight I will enjoy it more. I'm certainly hoping my knees won't hurt as much. Anyway, I would like to eventually work my way up to running 1 marathon in my life but I would first like to start with shorter distances. 5k would be my first goal. When I look for training programs though they all want you to already be running. Does... Sat, 31 Jan 2015 23:14:16 EST Have you worked with a running coach? Helpful? I am brand-new to running, as in "today was my first run in over 25 years" brand new! I hopped on the treadmill this morning to see how it felt (I was just released after the surgery that's allowed me to try running again) and I'm sure I was a mess. :-) I have decent running shoes but plan to have a pair fit at the running store everyone swears by, but I wonder if I should look into a running coach as well? I'm sure my form is atrocious and I hear so many things about heel strike and stri... Mon, 8 Dec 2014 12:18:43 EST First Run Today! Hi everyone!
Today was a milestone for me. I haven't been able to (or wanted to, to be honest) run for many, many years but after some recent surgery I am able to try again. This morning I got on the treadmill at the gym and was able to bump it up to a 5.5mph "jog" for 1-2 minute intervals.
Wow! It's a LOT harder than I remembered! :-) And so here I am for motivation.
I usually do 25 minutes/day on the elliptical but this running thing is going to be a whole new experienc... Mon, 8 Dec 2014 11:34:23 EST I ran just over 7km today! Admittedly, at a place not much faster than a shuffle. But speed will come, it's distance I'm focusing on at the moment. I'm aiming for 10km by the end of the year, and I'm starting to think I might actually get there.

I finished the Zombies Run! 5k trainer a couple of weeks ago, then had several runs where I went out way to hard and died in the 3rd kilometre. So I'm focusing on slowing down and hitting distance goals, not pace. My favourite place is run is great for that -- it's a... Sat, 15 Nov 2014 17:33:19 EST Hello there My name is Busara. I live in Kenya, the land of many many accomplished runners. Ironically I can not run to save my life. A few weeks ago I started venturing out and realized I love it outside. I love walking outside and just being with nature and not feeling stressed about anything. I have started running a few minutes at a time and I am hoping to be an accomplished runner some day. I would like to be able to say i run X miles a day. I am hoping that I will be able to do it. And if I lose t... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 05:08:53 EST Coming back after a long hiatus. Hi Everyone!

It's been almost 10 years since I laced up my sneakers. I'm really excited to make the journey back and make some supportive and encouraging friends along the way!

Cheers! Thu, 2 Oct 2014 09:39:33 EST Beginning to run When I started losing weight(I was about 318) I couldn't walk on the treadmill without holding on to the rails. Yesterday I went out with my mother in law for our 3 mile walk(With some running on the 1st and 3rd mile) and even offered to push her stroller the last mile while we ran.

We don't run very far yet- just light poles. But i'm happy with how far I've come. Wed, 17 Sep 2014 10:37:32 EST Hello Everyone! I just started running about six weeks ago, and I'm already able to run about 20 minutes, so I'm quite happy with my progress so far. I'm not fast by any means though! I signed up for my first 5K in three weeks, so I'm mostly focusing on that. Sat, 13 Sep 2014 00:13:31 EST Interval app for running Hello, I am on week 8 of my couch to 5K running program and it was been going really well.... but now that I am on the just run for 25+ minutes, it is just boring for me. I have to run on my treadmill, and no amount of good music or tv has been able to break the boredom. I have the endurance to finish, but have come to dread my runs. Can anyone recommend an app that has running intervals? I know I can just set the timer, but I really liked the 5k program when the running, walking interval... Sat, 16 Aug 2014 10:52:08 EST New to running Hi everyone;
I am so excited to join a running group. I started running a few years ago and got up to being able to run non stop for around 20 minutes or so...over time I gave it up and I have always wished I kept at it.

I know I am a runner at heart because every time I see someone out running I envy them. Well, 4 weeks ago I decided to start again. I started doing the walk/run with an app that was supposed to work me up slowly to running a 5km over 8 weeks....well the app... Mon, 16 Jun 2014 12:10:47 EST Hello! I am 36 years old, I suffer from heel spurs but yet I still want to try running. I know the walk/run is a great way to start so I am hoping that by being here I can get some great starting up tips and maybe meet other runners who also have conditions that made them think they could never start running. Fri, 13 Jun 2014 15:45:36 EST Newbie here Hi All,
I'm new to this group. Have been away from SP for some months and now the weather's great I'm happy to get outside and begin my walk/jogging. I want to run a marathon next year (my brother-in-law is doing it with me). To prepare, I'm starting running again. I'll follow the Couch25k program and hope to build up to at least joining a 5k this year in the Fall and Thanksgiving.
Best wishes to you all!
Victory Tue, 10 Jun 2014 04:59:56 EST Did you run today? I decided to go outside today for my run, even with the cold damp and windy Montana morning that greeted me. I tried out my new Adidas Glide Boost and wow, I am in love! They felt great and I managed to get in 2.5 miles in 26 minute. Not bad considering I have been running on a treadmill all winter long and really haven't seen outside running since late October. How did everyone else do today?!
312 Mon, 5 May 2014 10:15:38 EST Hi there I am joining this group so that I can get some inspiration as well as feedback and tips. I am a mother of two, and I work full time as a flight attendant. My mother passed away at the young age of 40, I was just 8 years old. My family has heart disease on both sides, but my mother had many strikes, chain smoking, obesity, and a sedentary life style. Besides the stress of being a divorced mother of four, she never took time for herself. I am now 42, and I am looking at the weight I have g... Sun, 4 May 2014 02:41:49 EST Where is everyone? I just recently started running, back in October actually, but was quickly sidelined in January due to planter fasciitis and am just now getting back to it. (Amazing how far you slide when you stop). Tue, 22 Apr 2014 11:55:10 EST Hello All My name is Jill and I am so happy to see the snow melting. I am a mother of 2 and need to work myself back into shape. I read jogging is the best exercise to burn fat, so I am going to make myself do it at least 3 times a week. Best wishes to everyone!
213 Sat, 12 Apr 2014 16:14:54 EST Hi! My name is Angie and I want to start running. I am still recovering from plantar fasciitis, and tarsal tendonitis, so I'm going to start out with walking/jogging. My goal is lose around 30 pounds. I don't always go by the scales, I go by how my clothes fit and how I feel. First thing I have to do is buy a new pair of running shoes, since the last pair contributed to my foot issues. I will be happy with the progress I make & I'm going to try really hard not to get frustrated! Tue, 1 Apr 2014 17:53:37 EST Just started running Hi All,

My name is Ty. I live in Newark, DE. I am just getting started running. I have been running on a treadmill for a month or so and tried to run on a path at a local park on a warm day here and of course I enjoyed it alot more than the treadmill. I am planning to get outside more once the tempature gets above 60 degrees. :)

I'm think of trying a 5k in May or June which should give me enough time to get ready.

Thanks

Ty Sun, 30 Mar 2014 17:29:36 EST What tracker/ pedometer do you use? Pros? Cons? We all have them ( or should. If you don't read what others say about theirs, then Get One! ;-p)

Some we love, some we just use a short while then more on to bigger and better. I think we all have had one of those basic step counters at the start. Ya know, the ones most drug stores, running clubs , etc. Give away. Sure they serve the basic purpose of counting steps and most you can even put a little daily goal in , but their real purpose is to get you thinking about MOVING.
Mi... Tue, 21 Jan 2014 08:06:33 EST Question... What do you do when you want to start running, but it's 13 degrees F out and icy, and you don't have access to a treadmill?

I've tried to start running before, but it wasn't so cold and icy. I have balance issues, so ice and me are definitely NOT friends! Running in the street isn't really a great idea around here, but I may have to. Any other suggestions are very welcome, though!

My plan is to do the Couch to 5k program so I can do the Color Run in June, and then again ... Life is AMAZING! Am I a runner? It has taken me quite a while to say "YES I AM". I do not run a full 5K, but I do run! I do pass all of those sitting on the couch. The point for me is I am doing it!!! I also have Asthmatic Bronchitis and running outside hurts, so I mainly run on my treadmill. I do sign up for 5K's, and will continue to do so. I am not worried about my time at this point, j... Sun, 5 Jan 2014 18:04:08 EST Running for my kids Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. I'm not brand new to running, but definitely going at slow pace and shorter distances because I'm actually running with my kids, ages 3 and 6. We've got a very busy schedule (both my husband and I work 2 jobs) so we needed to find an activity for our kids that they could participate in that we could fit in the schedule. We run during our free time and enter 1 mile fun run/walks when we're available to do so. My boys have Autism and ADHD which... Sun, 5 Jan 2014 10:32:27 EST Introduction and Personal Challenge Hi Everyone!

My name is Naomi and I'm from the mid-coast area of Maine. I began running a few months back, and it's been one of the best decisions of my life. I have trouble with motivation at times so, I set up a challenge for myself. I began completing one 5K a month in October and will continue through March 2014. Unfortunately, I was in a car accident a little over two weeks ago (as a passenger) and this has set me back a little. I was able to 'walk' away from the acciden... Sat, 30 Nov 2013 12:14:24 EST New member - Workout 1 - Couch to 5K Hi All,

I just joined this team this weekend. I've been on SP for a few years but only used it to track calories in and out. I've done two 5Ks in my past and neither were fun but it was because I hadn't adequately trained. I've been in that place where I can just run at an easy pace and get that high. It is awesome and I want it back! However, I haven't run in years much less really exercised so I'm starting at the beginning. I downloaded the Cto5K app and tried workout 1 ... Hi, I'm new to the board but I'd like to ask a question.

Is anyone else in this situation- I ran my first ever official 5K a couple of weeks ago (It was the Glow Time 5K- great fun I highly recommend it) and although I'm pleased with myself, I'd like to improve my time, and get faster.

So my question is how should I be training? Should I go for 5K every time, or concentrate or distance, speed, etc? Does anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks in advance
<B... Mon, 9 Sep 2013 21:15:45 EST How cool is running?!?! I've just started running (so really still doing a combination of running and walking) but am enjoying it so far. Currently, I'm restricted to a treadmill for several non-physical reasons, but it's one of my goals to get outside and run without suffering a panic attack (they can really suck while exercising). After that, I'd love to be able to run with others, possibly in a 5k. From what I've seen on... Mon, 10 Dec 2012 13:12:49 EST It hurts and I like it! Fri, 16 Nov 2012 15:39:56 EST Newly minted runner Heyo! My name is Linn and I'm a new runner. I've been walking the track at my club and slowly building up to short jogs around the track. I can usually only make one circuit before I have to walk again to catch my breath, but I'm working toward steady paces. I usually run/walk in Vibram FiveFingers (with heavy foot warm-up beforehand) and track my pace with Nike+ Running on my iPod.

Any tips for a new runner? Encouragement? Cookies? Thu, 1 Nov 2012 09:47:42 EST hey out there Hi, I joined about a week ago.

I've run 4 or 5 times. Mostly walked and jogged a bit. (see topic title) I got the bug to run a couple of years ago, but haven't yet followed through on the urges to RUN. I started my SP journey in January 2009, started the C25K program sometime that March, but had knee troubles that dissuaded me from further training....then I returned to working at sea and lost all I'd worked for. That brings us to today. A couple of months ago, I was talking with a friend and we decided we were going to run the Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon in... Sun, 21 Oct 2012 19:58:30 EST Orthotics? Was wondering if anyone runs with orthotics. I have the "hard" ones prescribed by a physican several years ago--I always wear them even for running but was wondering if I shouldn't just buy running shoes that help prevent the situation (my feet roll inwards) and leave the orthotics at home. Thanks! Sun, 21 Oct 2012 11:08:23 EST New-ish Used to run a couple of years ago, then tapered to nothing. I find I really miss it and would like to get started again. Tue, 25 Sep 2012 09:33:02 EST Running on concrete Hi team...

I have been running since mid February when I started the C25K program. Currently I've been using Jeff Galloway's run/walk method and it really works for me. My question is about running surfaces. I know that concrete is like the worst surface to run on, and that the road (asphalt) is a little better, but I was curious how many people are running on concrete and doing ok physically. I am almost 50 and really don't want to cause harm to my knees and joints, but the paths... Thu, 20 Sep 2012 13:11:54 EST New Running Shoes - Leg Pain I've been running for about 2 months now and last week I decided to get some new shoes at a running store. I bought my previous pair based on how they looked on the shelf and since my arches collapse when I stand as well as I over-pronate, I figured I should go to a real running store and have someone help me out.

I'm still on a walk/jog plan to get up to a 5k, however in my old shoes I was able to run almost a mile without stopping to walk. I've always hated running my whole life, but lately I've been seeing what great results runners have with loosing/maintaining their weight. I started walking/running about 4 weeks ago for 60 min. a day. I won't lie, it doesn't feel all that great. I'm a college student trying to lose a few (ok, maybe more than a few) pounds before I graduate from college this spring, and just in time for summer! I was always very thin growing up, but when I got to college the "Freshman 15" turned into the "Sophomore 20," and here I am now. Food has been a way for me to manage stress and emotions, as well as a time filler when I'm bored. Well, no more! I am ready to shed those pounds! Sun, 11 Mar 2012 14:18:12 EST Knee Pain Questions... I have been running for about a month now but I've increased my frequency to five days per week (Tuesday and Friday are break days unless the weather demands otherwise). My knees are killing me. I just bought new running shoes and inserts today after being analyzed at a special running shoes store. I'm hoping that helps a little. Any tips on how to make this easier on my knees? Mon, 5 Mar 2012 10:21:09 EST Hello Everyone I am Patricia I live in St. Louis, MO. Running is new for me, more of a walker. I hope to pick up tips/notes from others that will keep me running beyond the pain of it. Sun, 4 Mar 2012 11:24:45 EST Hello :) My name is Cassie, I'm 29 and, as you may have guessed from my user name, I'm fat and I play video games. Having just started jogging about a month ago, I am still very, very new to this. So far, I'm excited about my progress, especially since I used to be totally unable to run due to an injury. Right now I'm working the run/walk method to get ready for my first ever 5K (the Color Run in Kansas City), which is in June. I'm looking forward to meeting some new folks on this team who want to share their running experiences.

312 Sat, 3 Mar 2012 10:31:42 EST Training for a half- Thoughts on Walk/Run? Question, How did you work up your miles, did you do the run/walk or did you just run the entire time? I ask because...I am unsure what I want to do for my half training! When I first started running last June, I did a walk/run program- and I enjoyed it, but at that time my goal was just to be able to run about an hour and not stop. When I first started I could only run for a minute or two! That program worked great, in fact I quickly moved up and skipped "levels", since I was already in d... Fri, 2 Mar 2012 14:22:22 EST MCL problems Has anyone had MCL problems and what did you do about it. I am wearing a brace and taking a break from running. But I don't want to have to quit running-I love it too much. However I don't want to hurt my knee anymore than it is. Any advice? My dr are vague on the issue Mon, 20 Feb 2012 13:04:10 EST Timed intervals or "I will run past the stop sign" I have been doing timed interval training to improve my endurance. On the weekend I wanted to listen to a new playlist (without time indicators) and decided to just do my usual route walking and then picking a point in the distance and running to it. I found that I was able to run past my picked destination and I ran faster.

What do you like? What method did you use to start running? Mon, 6 Feb 2012 17:06:45 EST Digging Deeper I am really a beginner at running, and I'm doing an interval running program (2 mins running, 2 minutes walking, etc). This morning's run was just awful. I couldn't/wouldn't push through some of the 2 minute intervals, and my head was not in the game.

I wanted to vent about an off day, but also want to ask everyone what you do when you need to dig a bit deeper to get through your run. Sat, 28 Jan 2012 13:45:41 EST Starting over AGAIN My name is Linda and I am starting over again. I know that it will not be easy but I am the only one that can do this for me. I was always one of the last people to finish the mile run in PE class, sometimes while half of the class was already heading back inside. I've always found it difficult to run for more than a few minutes. I feel like I can't breathe and have no choice but to walk.

In 2011, I decided to get moving and get healthy once and for all. The elliptical machine and I have become good friends. I started running on a treadmill a few weeks ago but now that I am thinking of doing a 5k I have taken my training outdoors as it is so different. ( plus I was too embarrassed to run outside in public before)
I am slowly trying to build up my endurance by doing interval training and am trying to run 5k 3 times per week. My times are slow but I'm trying not to worry about that, i just want to be able to run ... Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:03:34 EST newbie.. somewhat Hey everyone.! I started running on the treadmill about 3 years ago, but it was doing the interval running and walking program. I never actually ran for any length of time, just spurts between walking. Then in October I decided I wanted to "really run". As of yesterday, my longest distance has been five miles and I consistently run 3 miles every time I run. I am slowly getting over my fear of running outside (where people can actually see me) and ran 3.25 miles yesterday in 35 minutes. Not to... Tue, 10 Jan 2012 14:44:42 EST New-ish to Running... Hi everyone, I'm new to this team but not new to Spark. I've finally decided to train for a half-marathon in 2012! I am a cyclist and haven't run much lately. I did a sprint triathlon in July and the run for that was a 5K. I'm definitely ready to shake things up. I just started running again this week, and I'm hoping to be ready for the Illinois half-Marathon at the end of April. Thanks for having me aboard. :) Thu, 29 Dec 2011 15:20:06 EST Lower abdominal pain when running The last two times I've been out running I've noticed pain in my lower abdomen. Specifically, my uterus. It starts about 2/3 of the way into the run (2-3 miles total so around mile 2) and it stops about 15 minutes after I stop running. It isn't gas and it is nothing that causes me to go to the bathroom when I finish running. It can be pretty painful. It isn't something I experienced the first week I was running, but I've only been running about 2 weeks now anyway. I've never had this ty... Tue, 6 Dec 2011 07:04:55 EST Improvements This morning was day 3 of running. I've started out doing 2 miles, running every other day. I'm slow, I am going at a 15 minute mile pace. My idea was to increase by .25 miles each week until I can do a 5k, then I will focus on improving my pace a little, and then increasing mileage again if I want to go further. Prior to this I've never been a runner. Couch to 5k never worked for me the many times I tried it. I just finally realized I need to start out at a turtle pace.

This... Fri, 25 Nov 2011 12:11:48 EST Newbie from SoCal! Hi! I'm Dixie, a new runner from San Diego. I signed up for my first 5k on 28 Jan, and I have to admit that I'm already a little nervous.

I'm not a runner, in fact I had myself convinced most of my life that I hated it. There are so many sparkers who have become runners that I know I can too, I think I've just been pushing too hard.

So I'm starting again! Hello everyone! Mon, 21 Nov 2011 16:26:39 EST Blown in from the windy city.... Hi, I can't remember if I've introduced myself yet since I joined so long ago. Haven't done any running since then so a new intro is probably due anyway. I live in Chicago. I probably should have started running while it was warm out as I'll be stuck inside now. I tried running a short while ago and it was hell. Then I remembered running when I was younger and remembered how easy it had been when I was weight training. I'm going to try that again. I have to start weight training again anyway ... Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:15:24 EST Need to get rid of my big butt! Any advice???? Hi! Wed, 7 Sep 2011 12:09:08 EST New to running - again! I joined SparkPeople back in March - it became a religion to me. I was diligent with tracking my nutrition and exercise. I began running for the first time in my life - I even ran my first 5K in May. After the 5k, Sparkpeople became a faint memory. Summer came and there were several events in my life that got in the way of my time on SparkPeople. Tracking food and fitness stopped, infact, watching what I ate and exercising stopped completely. The weight that was lost piled back on - pl... Hello, my name's Ashleigh, I'm 22 and have just started jogging a couple of weeks ago. So far I've been doing 25-30 minutes depending on how many walking breaks I take -- my route stays the same. Today I managed a whopping 47 minutes (by doubling back on myself to a certain point) which was awesome! I don't know what distance I'm doing unfortunately, do you guys use app's on your phones or anything? I know it's pretty daft but I actually have no idea how to accurately judge distance so if any... I had to run the dreaded mile in high school and I would get red in the face and feel like I was going to pass out. It was awful and very embarrassing for a young person. Now at the age of 25 I carried that stigma for running my whole life. It wasn't until recently that I was taught how to breathe and how to have the correct form. It was so much easier. I got no cramps and was able to actually run a continuous quarter of a mile without stopping. I was so happy and proud and felt... Other parts get tired and sore towards the end which is what i would expect. I do stretch before I run and walk for 2-5 minutes before to warm up. I do live in a "hilly" area. Anyone have advice?

Mon, 27 Jun 2011 21:29:21 EST New from Australia I joined SP between Christmas and New Year with my 50th birthday looming. I have been running to get fit and stay healthy since then. I usually run around our local volcano (seriously) which is more of a trail run and very steep in places. The downside is that it is impossible to run it in the dark so when I work long days I have an excuse not to go (it is winter here). However, the other day I found myself desperate to get out and run, even though it was dark, so I worked out a 5 km street c... Fri, 24 Jun 2011 23:15:08 EST Advise needed I have my first 5K tonight. Mon, 20 Jun 2011 10:29:23 EST Beating the Heat/Pacing Query Question for all: I'm in a part of the country that can get hot-hot-HOT and very humid. When running and you feel exhausted and hot, do you slow your pace way down? Do you walk, for a bit then run again when you can? I was able to run for quite a time without stopping. My legs were feeling strong, no shortness of breath. This week, running has been tough. I still don't feel short of breath but my legs are so tired and weak.

I started a new job last week where I stand for 8 hours a day from a sedentary job. Hi everybody! I've been doing a modified c25k and had gotten to running 5minutes with 1 minute walking in between for a total of usually 30-45 minutes. Then last weekend I ran in a 5K and absolutely blew it! Psychologically or something, I blew it. I jogged for about a mile and a quarter, and then I couldn't go any more. The sun was too hot and there were too many hills and I ended up walking the rest of the way, ending with a 50 minute time. Ugh! All that training for what felt like nothin... I've noticed that my left big toe has been bothering me (more above the toe than the actual toe) and last night I had a GREAT run for a half hour (no walking spurts at all!) but I noticed that my left foot was hurting. I have a 13 year son who has just signed up for X-Country this year at school. I would like to be able to run with him as he is conditioning. I tried this last year but I did not stick to it. My goal this year is to stick to it and hopefully run a 5K by late August. Hi there! I think I am finally going to use the Sparks page and find the community and support that I dearly need. I am the heaviest I have ever been and am at a critical point where I need to decide if I am going to just love myself as I deserve, or if I am going to let myself fall down into a spiral of unhappiness and self-hatred. I find the Sparkspeople site a little difficult to use, but I'm hoping that if I can just give myself to it that I will benefit. Tue, 3 May 2011 12:26:51 EST new Hi everyone. I'm new to Spark People and I joined this group because I've been trying to run on and off for about a year now. I love it, I'm just not very consistent and I'm not in good shape. I'm trying to get back on track and I've been running 30 minutes three or four times a week for the past three weeks. When I say I'm running 30 minutes, that is with many walk breaks. I'm trying to up my actual running time a little bit each week. I'm hoping this group will inspire me to keep going. Wed, 26 Jan 2011 11:24:33 EST New runner here... Hi everyone! Yesterday was the first day I called myself a "runner" and meant it. I just started training for my first 5k coming up this May. I have never participated in a race in my life; in fact, right now I can only jog a mile. Any tips/advice/support you'd like to send my way is very welcome!

Mon, 24 Jan 2011 19:23:49 EST Hi Everyone!! I have been battling my weight since...probably around age 6. and have definitely had moments of success and moments of failure along the way! it's been a while since i have fully committed myself to my health, and my weight has been slowly climbing in the wrong direction. i know that this is a super supportive community, and i also know that i would be about 25% as successful in the weight-loss process were it not for this website! so i am back, and cant wait to really focus on myself and my... Hello! My name is Nell and I am interested in properly learning how to train for a 5K with little to no experience. I am able to run 1 mile so far (never really enjoyed running until recently!).

I hope everyone had a great New Year!

I am trying to better myself and transform my current way of living into a more healthy, active lifestyle. Any suggestions and advice is welcome! Wed, 5 Jan 2011 12:40:50 EST Introduction Hi All,

I'm trying to get into running, but have always disliked running. I can do a stationary bike or elliptical machine for an hour, but once I start on a track or on the road, I have trouble stabilizing my breathing and keeping going. I'm hoping to find some tips on this team to improve what I'm doing and make it more enjoyable vs. a chore. Sun, 19 Dec 2010 13:24:37 EST Hello all! My name is Crystal and I have been a member of Sparkpeople since the middle of November. I am loving the tracking options for diet and exercise, but would like to get more into the social aspect of it. I am a stay-at-home mom with my 22 month old son (after teaching elementary school for 6 years). I have always enjoyed exercise, but have struggled to eat within my caloric range, especially since I'm a vegetarian and am rarely "full". I began running in February and LOVE it! I've completed... Sat, 18 Dec 2010 10:23:49 EST Endurance vs. speed - which to work on? I just finished my first half marathon. I ran/walked it and finished in 3:40. Not very good. However I would like to keep my training up, and do another one, and get faster and faster. So I started the C25K program in December to start running more, walking less. But I would like to re-start my half marathon training in January. Should I hold off on the half-marathon training (long runs/walks) until I finish the C25K and can actually run without having to stop and walk? I am thinking t... Tue, 14 Dec 2010 14:58:51 EST using a pedometer for tracking distance/help I live in the country and was told at Best Buy that GPS tracking may not be as accurate out here so I need to use a pedometer. Did my research and found that the Omron HJ112 was rated in the top five. Now about set up. Should I set up for my running stride instead of walking stride since I will be using it for running. It says it calculates aerobic steps also but I'm thinking that is probably more for the calorie burn than the actual steps! Help! Fri, 10 Dec 2010 11:06:56 EST Nike+ sensor users Hi everyone!

I don't use Nike shoes but I do use the Nike+ sensor to track my runs and so much more. I also use the website
lus/en_US/plus/#//runs/ to connect with runners all over the world.

Does anyone here use this as well and want to become friends on Nike+?

Happy running!
312 Fri, 10 Dec 2010 10:23:05 EST Road ID Have you heard of this? Wed, 8 Dec 2010 16:05:45 EST Shoes put away for the winter :( Well, after I'd been so committed to going out and had a routine, I needed to accept that I just can't run outdoors anymore due to slippery conditions. I know I could purchase those crampon-like traction control things but we also already have a few feet of snow...more than a few actually.
And I just can't do the treadmill thing. Running for me is an excuse to get outside & take the dog for a walk, so, unfortunately, my running shoes are put away for the winter.

I am; howe... Any tips Wed, 10 Nov 2010 10:15:13 EST Running and weight gain I began a slow jog and was working my way up to 5 days/week at 30 minutes. Doing well, but found that I am eating the same calories and sticking to the sparkdiet when I began to slowly gain weight again. I'm increasing my ex routine to include more strength training, and thought i would begin to do intervals in my running, so my heart rate intervals from 160bpm, back down to 130, and back up to get the idea. Anyone have any suggestions of what worked for them??? Mon, 8 Nov 2010 21:12:33 EST Made to 3.1 miles!! After training for a few months I've finally made it up to 5K yesterday! I am really excited! I have my first actual 5K race the sunday after Thanksgiving!! I was going pretty slow though, do you guys think I need to go faster than an 11 minute mile at an offical race? That's the pace that "feels best" for me. I could probably go faster but I wouldn't enjoy it as much. :) My husband is up to 3.5 miles! I am so stinking proud of us! hahah! Fri, 22 Oct 2010 13:43:04 EST Re-re-re-r(?) starting Hi!
So my husband & I went on a major cycle tour this summer and lost a bunch of weight and I'm lovin' it! I don't want to put the weight back on (now in a VERY sedentary job) and the community we moved to is an uber-fit, mountain town so I've decided to take up jogging since, as we all know, it's a very cost-effective means of working out.

I've run in the past, nothing major, working up to 10k, etc and then stuff stops me: winter, boredom, etc BUT that's why we moved her... I have been working on a run/walk program (C25K), although I have not been super consistent. I am a work in progress :). I did have to go get new shoes since in the last six months my form has gotten better. I am getting stronger so that is a good sign. I can't wait to poke around and read and learn. Glad they have a place for people to ask new questions :). Mon, 18 Oct 2010 12:48:30 EST Treadmill did you start?? I am from Philadelphia and it's starting to get cold out. I don't want the fact that it is cold out to stop me from jogging and eventually running. I have a treadmill at home. It's a nice one that has an incline and different speeds.
My question is how did you get started when on the treadmill?? What pointers do you have for me.

Should I try to do it for 30 minutes or should I go for distance?? Then do I try to beat my time or beat my distance and time?

I kno... I have recently decided i would like to take up jogging and would like to aim for a 5k run to raise money for charity for my sisters and brothers illness, so last wednesday morning i went to the park and managed to jog and walk for 10 minutes, and i felt great afterwards so the next morning i again went to the park and jogged and walked for 10 minutes and managed more jogging than walking than i had the previous day. Thu, 14 Oct 2010 12:00:56 EST Plantar Fascitis - heel pain is killing me! I am training for a HM in January and have been running for 9 weeks 3-4 times a week. During the week I've been doing 3-4miles each time I run according to my training schedule with Saturday being the long run, this Saturday was 6.8 miles. I've had a pain in my left heel right where the arch meets the heel for about a month now and it definitely gets worse on the longer run. Hi,
Just wanted to introduce myself and give a little background. Throughout my life (I'm 41) I have always dabbled in running but for some reason I always fizzled out right when I felt like was getting good! I'm not sure why. I hope not to do that again because I feel like my life is passing me by and I'm not doing the things that I want to do. I live very close to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. I am new to this board, and fairly new to sparkpeople in general. My name is Heather and I am a brand new runner. I guess you can say I caught the "running bug." I have no training or experience, and I worked my way up to 3 miles really fast. Well, I think that was a problem! My shins started hurting so now I am back to resting until it goes away. Tue, 5 Oct 2010 20:18:26 EST Running Towards Health (10/4/2010) Hi everyone,

For this week (10/4 - 10/10), pick one area of your running to improve on. Maybe you've been thinking about switching up the terrain you run on (i.e., road vs. treadmill, or road vs. trail), maybe it's that you want to work on getting faster. Whatever it is, let us know...if you crystallize it by sharing it here, then you're more likely to do something to start working on it.

For me, I'm going to work on increasing my overall distance this week...I'd like to... Mon, 4 Oct 2010 15:16:00 EST New shoes, new day, new to running I have been rulking (run/walk) for about 2 weeks now. Started going to the park when the weather finally cooled down enough to make it less uncomfortable to be out and about. I was unsure I wanted to run, so I slogged around in my earth sandals knowing they were a bad choice but not wanting to invest in a decent pair of shoes.

Friday I rulked (more walk than run) round the park for about 5 miles and decided I needed to invest in some shoes before I hurt myself. So, I picked up a pa... Sun, 3 Oct 2010 06:51:12 EST New Shoes How often should I buy new shoes? I currently have a pair of Adidas and Saucony that I switch between, but I've had them since April. They are still in okay condition. The soles are still good, and they still have tread on the bottom. Plus, my feet don't ache or anything, even after running for more than a hour. Should I be getting ready to purchase some new shoes? Sat, 2 Oct 2010 09:04:39 EST Hey Guys I grew up as a husky kid, and as part of that running was never a focus for me. Even when I played football in high school, running stayed at the bare minimum of what was required for a defensive lineman. I've been running for about a couple of months now. I'm still not that good at it, but every day is new day, and a new chance to become a better runner.
-Jeremy Mon, 27 Sep 2010 20:00:08 EST Hi everyone! I have recently started running. Fri, 24 Sep 2010 20:20:15 EST Question regarding Beginner Running I have been going to the gym for about 3 weeks. I can now run 1 minute at 4.2 and walk one minute at 3.8 and of course alternate for about 20 minutes. My question is how beneficial is it to me to learn how to run on the treadmill? I don't want my gym membership to go to waste if I have to run outside due to the gym benefiting me in other ways. Also if the treadmill is ok, at what incline should I learn to run on. I know that 0% does not mimick the outdoors. Any help will do. Oh by the ... Thu, 23 Sep 2010 15:21:38 EST Running Towards Health - 9/20/2010 Hi everyone! Mon, 20 Sep 2010 09:06:36 EST Numb feet? I have just started training to run in my first 5k. I have run this distance only on a treadmill and only occasionally. Now I am running outside. After the second mile, my feet start to get numb, and they ache for the entire day after that. Does this happen to anyone else? Do I just need time to adjust to running this distance on an outdoor terrain, or might it be time for some new sneakers? Any advice?

Thanks! Sun, 19 Sep 2010 12:22:05 EST Stuck at 1.5 miles! Help! Hi everyone...
I started the Couch to 5K program back in May. I did mostly treadmill training because I live in central Florida and it's just too hot outside. So I've made it to 3.1 miles on the treadmill and have signed up for a 5K. Now, a couple weeks ago I took my running outside to really prepare for the 5K (early morning or evening). I cannot seem to get past 1.5 miles outside! I think it's a mental thing.
