SparkPeople Martial Arts for women Team Messageboard Hi and welcome! This team was created for women to share their feelings and experiences about the arts. My name is Cindy and I earned my blackbelt in karate at the age of 47 in 1998. SparkPeople Martial Arts for women Team Messageboard Hello! Hi all, I'm new to this team. 5 or so years ago I studied ITA Tae Kwon Do. I'm just now starting back at Bushi Ban. I love martial arts of all kinds and am excited to be starting again. I'm also glad to have found this group. Sun, 1 Nov 2015 12:58:49 EST Tang Soo Do Hello all!

I just earned my orange belt in Tang Soo Do yesterday. I've been doing TSD since March of this year and I LOVE it! I never thought that martial arts was for the "plus sized" but boy was I wrong. I've accomplished so much more than I could have ever dreamed. I've come a long way, met some incredible people and have learned so much. I look forward to future belts! Thu, 13 Aug 2015 12:15:54 EST Introducing self Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself. I started Taekwondo/ching sai do (less jumping around, according to Sensei) last year and I'm up to green belt, next belt will be halfway to black.

It's partially to lose weight, partially for exercise, partially for fun and partially for defense. I suck at sparring because I'm afraid of hurting my partner, padding or no, so it makes me timid. Forms aren't too bad and tackling a bag is a good stress reliever.

So, hello! Wed, 5 Aug 2015 12:26:38 EST 2015 Mid January of the new year already! Wow, time flies. How's life ladies? I'm slooowly easing back into activities. Nearly half the weight I'd lost is back, thanks to being sedentary after surgery and eating my emotions.
Well, there's a reason the rear view mirror is so much smaller than the windshield- we're supposed to look forward!

Nationals is in August, martial artists from all over the US will be meeting in Idaho this year for what promises to be amazing training. It's n... Thu, 15 Jan 2015 18:13:12 EST trying to get back in the dojo Hey everyone, I'm earned my blackbelt in tkd in 2008, taught for a year then grad school, car accident and moved. 80lbs later, I'm in the worst shape of my life and miss tkd fiercely. I know if I were to join a school in my current shape I would be so frustrated. I'm working on kicking myself back into the me I know I can be. Sun, 6 Jul 2014 00:32:27 EST July Chat WOW, only 2 posts last month....where is everyone? Please check in and say hi and let us know what is going on!

Alicia Tue, 1 Jul 2014 16:40:57 EST Historical European Martial Arts Hi everyone, I'm Monica... I do Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) and am going to be starting Brazilian jiu-jitsu soon. Mon, 30 Jun 2014 09:31:12 EST June Chat! Wow, I can't believe that it is June already! I am preparing for my start of black belt workouts! It is on June 21st! I am very worried about it. I am having back issues and am not 100% sure I can make it thru the next 6 months! It scares me to think I might not be able to! I am going to the chiropractor today again to hope it helps. I thru my back out some helping my 9yo learn to ride a bike, leaning over holding his bike, running!

i found out that there is a ton that I nee... Mon, 9 Jun 2014 13:59:03 EST April Chat Thought I would start a new thread.

Sorry I was not around a lot in March. My girls worked on the middle school musical and I did help alot too. Then 2 of us in the family got sick along with more than half the cast, crew and parent helpers. I am just getting over it, but now I am having issues with asthma. My back is doing a lot better. I have 2 months to get in better shape for black belt workouts!! I and my 12yo DD will be going for our 2nd degree black in Tae Kwon Do. <... Fri, 4 Apr 2014 23:28:55 EST Tracking Stance Training So if you all do stance training (just holding your stance for a set period of time) how do you track it in you fitness tracker.

For now I have just been rolling it in with the time I do the rest of my training. Does anyone else do anything different? Wed, 26 Mar 2014 19:44:21 EST Endurance for test Hey there ladies!

It is my hope/fear that I'll be testing for my black sash in Kung Fu sometime this spring. It's so very exciting, but I know that I have a lot of work ahead of me. The senior students have been kind enough to prep me for what I'm going to face. I've learned that I need to be prepared to perform all of my forms with little to no break since I will be the only one testing at my rank. That means that I will have 11 open hand forms, 7 weapon forms and 8 kicking combin... Tue, 18 Mar 2014 10:12:30 EST March already! 2 months and 1 week between now and Japan. I'm still in a boot, not close to were I wanted to be physically and struggling to remain positive. A lot of folks close to me seem to sense my despondency and have been supportive and very kind. My next follow up is Monday, I'm really hoping to graduate off crutches.
How's everyone else? Fri, 7 Mar 2014 16:50:58 EST Hello 2014!!! I've had a great start to 2014, how is everyone else doing? Sun, 5 Jan 2014 00:21:11 EST glad to find you all! I'm 55 and overweight. Back in the 90s, finishing up my 20 year army career, I was stationed in korea. I've taken martial arts most of my life, and was able to complete my black belt at kukkiwon there. Then I was stationed back in the states, new duty station, divorce, etc etc happened, and I never found another school. Here I am 20 years later, remarried, 10 year old son, and overweight. I signed my son up for a local class and they were so welcoming that I started working out there too (bla... Sat, 21 Dec 2013 21:07:21 EST Monthly check in December 2013 Final month of 2013, time flies! How was everyone's weekend? My dojo had our annual post Thanksgiving Gashkyu, a 12 hour training session from 6 pm Friday to 6 am Saturday. We worked sticks, knives, throws, ground work, self defense, kata and took a couple meditation breaks. With the long sessions it really seems that more material 'sticks', once you get to a certain level of mental and physical exhaustion, there no barriers to retention. Last year I made it to 2am, the year before I left at ... Sun, 1 Dec 2013 15:45:08 EST Monthly check in November 2013 How was everyone's weekend? I just returned from a Brown Belt Gasshuku in Scottsdale Arizona, the most incredible martial experience I've ever had. I've trained in everything we reviewed, except one or two techniques, so it wasn't brand new material. Instead we refined, reviewed, refined some more and had a great time the entire weekend. The state is gorgeous, I was able to visit botanical gardens, some historical neighborhoods in Phoenix and a beautiful Japanese restaurant. Spending the week... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 15:05:03 EST Still thinking about it. I have been wanting to get involved in some sort of Martial arts for a few years now...particularly in the past few months.

I haven't done it yet since I am a bit intimadated with the physical part of it....being tossed around and such.

I think this would be a fun way to get in some exercise and meet new people. My family is 800 miles away!

I guess I'm looking for encouragement and a little insight on what it's like and which form of Martial arts would be be... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 20:48:23 EST Monthly check in October 2013 Lots going on in the political world (US), anyone out there really affected? Will it interfere with your martial training?

I know multiple people that are furloughed, a couple of my classmates, and they had spoken about meeting for extra training time while the rest of us are at work.

Class last night was good, we divided into beginning and advanced classes right after warm ups and had great time. Most of the concepts and skills we worked are a bit over what I've wor... Tue, 1 Oct 2013 14:07:01 EST *Monthly* check in September 2013 So, although it was suggested months ago, I've held off doing monthly threads instead of weekly. For now though, I think this is best (especially since I keep starting the weekly ones late!).
So, how is everyone doing? Any one training today? Class was canceled, making it a solid week since I trained in the dojo and I'm feeling it mood-wise. Despite daily work outs and drills on my own, I'm feeling very anti-people today so I rescheduled dinner with my daughter A and movie with my frien... Mon, 2 Sep 2013 21:25:41 EST Weekly Check in August 25th-31st Last week of August already?!! shoot.
So how was your weekend ladies? Did you log in some training time?
Class yesterday was amazing, the first hour (our usual open mat/ weapons for brown and above) was spent working jo-kata with some Aikido folks, and they didn't have the drills we were working yet so I felt pretty good sharing information with them. Often when the Aikido black belts come to our class they are teaching us new material, it was a good switch up.
After that we di... Sun, 25 Aug 2013 18:20:06 EST Weekly check in August 18th-24th Late again, I apologize. How was everyone's weekend?
I worked, covered a back country race, football and motocross, looking forward to class tonight. Mon, 19 Aug 2013 15:32:28 EST Weekly Check in August 11th-17th How's the weekend treating you ladies?
I've been busy but in a great way, class Saturday and then a double movie feature last night with friends at my favorite theater. Today I've got groceries to get, floors to clean and food to prep. Dishes, kitchen counters, fridge and salmon (in the smoker) done! Sun, 11 Aug 2013 16:15:43 EST Hi-yah to the fat and back on track! Hi everyone!

My name is Nikki! I am 23 years old and live in Washington State.
I have been doing Kyo-Kai-Kenpo for about 4 years and recently earned my low brown belt. We do a mix of a lot of things.. Jiu-Jitsu, Mui Thai, Kickboxing.. :) our base art is Kenpo, though!

I have become a bit unfocused, hence why I'm on sparkpeople! It's pretty awesome being a part of a group of fellow female (I am the only girl in my class... which can be interesting) Martial Artists wh... Sat, 10 Aug 2013 03:55:34 EST Hi Hi I'm Pam, I am just getting started back in to TKD after about 7 yrs. I was a 1st degree ( Recommended Black Belt) and a Instructor Trainee with ATA when I quit due to a lot going on in my life. I didn't take my decided Black Belt test so I am starting back as a Red Belt again which is fine because it has been a long time. I am also taking Kickboxing classes to get back into the swing of things and loving it.
Wed, 7 Aug 2013 15:21:04 EST Weekly Check in August 4th-10th How was everyone's weekend? We had our seminar, was pretty wonderful. I felt like such a dunce much of the class but the part that involved actually throwing and falling, I did great. Its a big jump for the brain to study new forms with new people that have trained for decades in their arts. Many times the Sensei would look at our teachers, Mr. R and Mr. C and ask rude or condescending questions. Everyone ha ha'd and he he'd but I left feeling 'eh'. The seminar was meant to focus on universal... Mon, 5 Aug 2013 02:26:25 EST Weekly Check in July 28th- August 3rd Not late this week, woo hoo! How is everyone's weekend going? High points? Training?
I worked all weekend so no class for me, I did some free time and trained ground work drills and moving basics on my own for more than an hour. Today was motocross and after 13+ hours of being pelted with dirt and rocks kicked up by bikes, running up and down hills and all over the track, and putting a few on backboards and sending them out....I am beat! Mon, 29 Jul 2013 00:34:05 EST Weekly Check in July 21st -July 27th Late again! I apologize ladies, how was everyone's weekend?Trinity, if you make it to class let us know how it goes please?
I have class tonight too, got a really horrible sun burn over a week ago that I had thought was totally healed but in class Saturday we worked some techniques that pull your uke's face into your gi....I came out looking like I had scales on my face after I was uke for J 40
Today is better, a little, so I asked Sensei if he would skip the class for t... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 16:23:27 EST Question for veterns How many pounds did you lose before you could tell a difference in the dojo? Any kind of difference, less soreness, more speed, feet that weren't completely torn to shreads? Wed, 17 Jul 2013 11:42:25 EST Hello Starting up on SparkPeople again after a couple of years away.

I started practicing Kuk Sool Won at the end of January with my 8 year old son, mostly because he wanted to do martial arts and I thought it would be a good mother-son activity, but found out I love it! I got my yellow stripe in April and I think I'll be testing for my yellow belt in the next few months. I thought I was going to die half way through my first test, but I feel so much more confidant in my own strength... Wed, 17 Jul 2013 09:32:17 EST Weekly check in *late* July 14th-20th I hope Trinity made it to the doctor, her shoulder injury sounded serious. How is everyone else doing?
I had a great weekend, my deck was rebuilt by family and friends mostly from the dojo. We started at 9 Saturday morning, finished after 11 that night! Sunday I went fishing in Kasiloff, came home with more than 10 reds, successfull!
Class last night was fun, we worked some techniques we haven't done in a while and I got some refinements on my newest kata. Life is good. Tue, 16 Jul 2013 17:34:03 EST Weekly Check in July 7th- 13th New week, new chances and opportunity! How was everyone's weekend? I am starting this at 11pm Saturday night because I am working crazy hours this weekend, covered the mud run/ obstacle course this morning, a neighborhood fair in one of the city's worst neighborhoods this afternoon and then the Scottish games tonight, so beat! Mon, 24 Jun 2013 04:08:18 EST To our own advantage I read "Parting the Clouds - The Science of the Martial Arts: A Fighter's Guide to the Physics of Punching and Kicking... by Mr. Grenville Harrop and Rebecca Harrop" and it got me wondering and advantages in karate and how to optimize what we have physically. In other words, tall people with strong long limbs obviously have a certain advantage. Speed has a certain advantage. What about short, stocky people?

Here is my thought process: men have a center of gravity in their sho... Sun, 16 Jun 2013 21:37:06 EST hello Hello all!

I'm new to spark people and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the weight loss journey in martial arts is working for other women! I practice shotokan karate, I'm a 4th kyu purple belt, training for my brown belt. You may recognize that I picked a kata for my screen name. Since my first week as a white belt I have be excited to start learning the bassai dai karate (my dojo's first black belt kata) because it has not only so many different moves and requires a lo... Sun, 16 Jun 2013 13:53:25 EST Weekly Check in June 9th-15 How's everyone doing? I am halfway through a busy weekend with another 3 just like it coming up. Yesterday I worked a split shift, got done with my morning event just after class ended for everyone I train with and then had a 4 hour break before I needed to go back. During that time I was able to do a lot of housework, took the dog on a nice 6 mile walk and did kata on my own at the gym. Today is a motocross day, dashing up and down hills to get to injured riders is one heck of a work out <... It's our 'busy season' at job #2 so now's my chance to save up for the lean times this coming winter. Our dojo nationals are coming up, 3 weeks from now and most of the black belts (an... Sun, 2 Jun 2013 15:02:16 EST hello hi. i am 34 and from Canada. I am training in BJJ (Brazilian jiu jitsu) and kickboxing. My goal is to eventually fight in the ring. I sure hope so. That would be so exciting. I can't wait to meet everyone in this group. Sun, 2 Jun 2013 12:49:07 EST ?? about the Team goals I joined the 100 jumping jacks goal for the team but when I go to check it off on my Other Goals place, instead of checking that I did it I am asked for "how many" times.

Am I supposed to enter 1, for 1 time per day? Or do I enter 100, or whatever number of jumping jacks I did for the day? Thu, 30 May 2013 06:32:24 EST Weekly Check in May 26th- June 1st Sorry to start this 2 days late! My gym has a class and afterwards I'm headed to M's to help with house work she can't do with only one arm. Have a great day ladies! Sun, 13 Jan 2013 04:15:09 EST Weekly Check in January 6th-12th 2013 How was everyone's first few days of 2013? New goals, plans, dreams?
I've been with a friend from the dojo over the weekend, she had her right shoulder rebuilt basically, and her bicep re-attached. Lots of girl talk, watching movies and just R&R, I feel pretty good. Have a great week ladies!
Mon, 7 Jan 2013 02:40:34 EST Weekly Check in December 30th '12- January 5th '13 Welcome 2013!!!!
2012 brought some big changes in my life, and I'm sure I'm not the only one in this group. Would anyone like to share some of the highlights from 2012 in their lives?
I promoted to Brown III, considered the lowest of the 'upper belts' in my school. A huge thrill for one that supposedly could never again train in martial arts.
My daughter and I moved into a new home and welcomed a German Shepard/Husky mix, Neko, into our lives.
My other daughter married her... Sun, 30 Dec 2012 23:20:31 EST Weekly check in December 23rd-29th 2012 Last full week of 2012 already! Wow, time flies.
We had our regular class yesterday and it was a full one. Many of those that only train on weekday evenings made it and I like to think it's because they knew I was handing out cookies and wine as Christmas presents 4
Not likely though.
Today I'll be driving around town, delivering more cookies and cards, hope everyone stays safe over these last hectic days of the holiday season! Sun, 23 Dec 2012 16:35:00 EST Hello Everyone! Hello!

My name is BriAnne, and I train in WTF Tae Kwon Do. I just turned 32, and started training about 18 months ago. I was a white belt for a ridiculously long time (5 months), because I started at a class at the local community center, and then my instructor started his own school, so it took 3 months after that before I actually tested up. When he tied on my yellow belt, he said, "Finally, right?"

I just tested for my high blue belt yesterday, which with our bel... Sun, 23 Dec 2012 08:28:57 EST Weekly Check in December 16th-22nd CFMOSS, it sounds from last weeks threat like you are doing pretty good! Keep it up 386

Almost Christmas time! With the belt test, wedding and EMT practical behind me, now I can focus on holiday prep.

The belt test was tough...I actually began to question whether I would survive (really!). We did written first then moved to basics and kata. For basics and kata we tested in pairs but self defense was one student at a time. My daughter's wedding was at 3 and... Sun, 16 Dec 2012 23:20:28 EST Weekly Check in December 9th-15th 2012 Hello ladies, hope we are all having a wonderful weekend! I've got a belt test next weekend, so I'll be working hard and pretty distracted. The day after the belt test I've got my EMT practical exam and I'm also trying to prepare for the holidays..baking and fun.

Make sure to take time for you this busy season! 5 or 10 minutes a day to meditate, stretch, or relax. Sun, 9 Dec 2012 15:17:20 EST Howdy! Hi from San Antonio! Not sure why I haven't found this team sooner. My name is Jen, and I'm a black belt candidate in two different forms: Ketsugu Ryu Jiu Jitsu and a blended system of Krav Maga, Muay Thai KB and Jiu Jitsu. I have also recently begun BJJ.
I'm looking forward to connecting with other martial arts ladies! Tue, 4 Dec 2012 14:27:18 EST Weekly Check in December 2nd-8th 2012 Just a few more weeks of 2012 left, wow. It feels like the blink of an eye but then I look back on all that has happened.
Today I was paid to watch a karate tournament, how much greater does it get 334
It was fun to recognize techniques and a few kata, some of the competitors today were really fantastic.
Class as usual this week for me, hope everyone has a great week themselves! Mon, 3 Dec 2012 00:14:08 EST Weekly check in November 25th-December 1st Well, I have a dilemma. I have a big work deadline Dec 5th and a lot to do to get ready. My head says that this week is totally disrupted with Drs. appointments, including MIL staying for a few days around more eye surgery and the extra choir performance for DS10 - you need to work late on Monday. My heart says go to adult training for the 4th week in a row. I'll probably end up going to Karate, and feeling guilty.

Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and found ways to stay acti... Sun, 25 Nov 2012 20:59:15 EST Weekly check in November 18th-24th Thanksgiving week for some of us, any plans? I don't know what I'm doing for 'turkey day' yet, will most likely be simple at home. The following day though....Gashkyu!!! our 12 hour marathon training session, 6pm Friday evening through 6am Saturday, it's the first I'll have the opportunity to stay through the entire session.
I'm super excited!
216 326 414 418 Mon, 19 Nov 2012 03:18:59 EST Weekly check in November 11-17th New week, new thread, how is everyone doing? I'm having a wonderful weekend so far, class yesterday and a good work out today, plus getting a lot done (housework etc.)

I have PT tomorrow morning, it's a traction session and after last weeks I was still in a lot of pain so not sure if I'll be able to train tomorrow night or not. Last week was still only 1 week out from re-injury and today it's like a night and day difference though, so we'll see.
Hope everyone is doing great! Sun, 11 Nov 2012 19:07:26 EST Weekly Check-in November 4 - 10, 2012 Wow! It's really November already.

Don't have a lot of time, but wanted to report that R did a good job at his karate test yesterday and has been promoted to yellow belt. The test was rescheduled because of the storm, and there were only 4 kids. With the small group, Robert didn't manage to keep his mouth shut (we'd talked about it was a "no questions" time), but he was respectful and more attentive than usual. I wish we could get this level of attention during the average clas... Sun, 4 Nov 2012 09:46:03 EST Weekly Check In October 28-November 3, 2012 New week is upon us ladies, what are your goals this week?

My party last night was a huge success, my class today was even greater, and my main goal is to get rid of all the left over party food and Halloween candy without throwing it away or eating it myself! Sun, 28 Oct 2012 04:44:21 EST Weekly Check In October 21-27 2012 New week, what are our goals for the last full week of October. Any one making plans for Next month yet? Any parties planned for this months' end?

I'm having 'Ghoul's Just Want To Have Fun' Friday night, it's going to be a lot of fun. 21 and up only, grisly and ghostly menu, friends from the dojo and from work, martial arts meets medicine, should be a heck of a good time! Sun, 21 Oct 2012 23:20:38 EST New to Karate Hello I am new to the team and to Karate. My husband and son (9) started a few years ago and are orange belts and a month ago my daughter (5) and I (35) started on our white belts. I am enjoying it and doing ok I guess. My worst warm up is, what we call "the bunny hop" you go down on your haunches and hop form one side of the gym and back. I can go one way fine but pretty well collapse half way back. I know this will come with time but it is very frustrating to me to have my legs turn to jel... Tue, 16 Oct 2012 17:02:03 EST Weekly Check in October 14-20th New week, new thread 30
We got our first 'sticking' snow yesterday, its a wet mess out there today, I don't see any kata in the park in the next few weeks.
Have a great week ladies! Sun, 14 Oct 2012 14:09:23 EST Weekly Check in October 7- 13 I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Today a group of us from the school I attend are going to see 'Brave'. It's playing in one of the discount theaters here in Anchorage, Bear Tooth. The place has tables in each row along with booths in the back and serves a full menu, including the best pizza and micro-brews in the state. Great times!

So how many of us work on martial skills outside of class? I try (and usually succeed) at practicing 1 skill at least 10 minutes a day. Someti... Thu, 4 Oct 2012 20:29:29 EST Weekly Check in September 30- October 6 So here's our new thread of the week, how's everyone's weekend going?
I'm taking advantage of my first scheduled day off in several weeks and didn't pull my lazy bum out of bed until just before 10am. Friday I did a pretty hard resistance training session, and didn't favor it yesterday in class so today I'm really feeling it. With my back recently flared, it's been a while since anything but that really hurt and this is a good hurt, the one that says you know you worked for it! Yes, I'm... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 14:14:15 EST Weekly Check in Sept 23-29 Hi all....i said yesterday that i was hurting....BUT i am hurting even more today!! I walked from 9:45am to 4:45pm. I am disappointed in a lot of it. the person i sparred did not go by the rules. she punched super hard and we did not have chest protectors on. She also scored her 1st 2 points by punching my hand that i was blocking with ?!?! HUH??!?

I saw 2 of the other girls that i train with, one punched in the nose and one kicked in the face, by the same girl, they did not call it...then she was standing near me and i heard her tell the other girl that she... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 17:15:18 EST Weekly Check-In Sept 9-15 I'm gonna be cheeky and start this week's thread. After suffering from karate withdrawal during the month of August, we've started up again and just finished the first full week today. We're missing some of our regulars because they're still in China, but we've also got three new students which is always fun. Two six-year olds, boy and girl, and one eight-year old boy.

Today we practiced our weapons - mostly bo, and a little bit of sai. Tuesday we had kata class, and on Friday was... Sun, 9 Sep 2012 19:08:47 EST Anyoung ha sayeo Hello and good morning.
I'm Chellie, a second year TKD student, mother of two, just turned 50. My rank is Cho Dan Bo. In my do jang, it comes right before a temporary black belt. Temporary black comes before 1st degree black, which is the pretty belt with the name and rank embroidered on it.

I've been with Spark since 2007 and would love to join a community of folks who are active on Spark and active in life. This group sounds like a good one. Glad to be here. Sat, 8 Sep 2012 08:17:01 EST Weekly Check In Sept 2-8 I am so sorry I am late starting this thread! I have not felt good. What the heck, where did winter go?
New week, new thread. My class attendance had been horrible and I feel terrible about it, working again on Tuesday but I will be able to train Thursday! The last class I made was Tuesday last week so I'm eagerly anticipating.
This Saturday (after class) I'm moving! We are super excited about it, it's a great little house.
Have a great week everyone! Sun, 26 Aug 2012 13:46:43 EST Hi! I just heard about this group and thought I'd introduce myself.

I got my yellow belt on Saturday, it was great to get out of my white belt and felt nice to get promoted. Small accomplishment but great for the self esteem!

My kids have been in karate at the same dojo for a year, I started at the end of May. It's good family time as well as great exercise.

216 Tue, 21 Aug 2012 08:51:49 EST Weekly Check in August 19th-25th A new week here, coming up on the end of August. I've been working tons, my quick reflects have been coming in handy the last couple days. Today I helped cover motocross, some of the competitors are amazing to watch but when they wreck it's pretty terrible. Getting to an injured rider by running across the tracks and dodging other riders, a bit scary! We did not have anything we couldn't handle today, only a couple went to the hospital and they did not need ambulance transport, a good day. <B... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 22:47:40 EST Weekly Check in August 12th-18th New week, new opportunities!
I've had to take a second job and was really sad with how much class time it's going to take from me, however with my work schedule I can not get to most of the events needing coverage in class nights and on Saturdays there are plenty of events starting later. I'm still loosing a great deal of free time but I have the benefit of a second income, I'm getting my EMT current again and I will not miss to many classes!

Happy enough to dance, think I'l... Sat, 28 Jul 2012 13:41:28 EST Team Leader Our Team Leader has been inactive for a bit, I'm considering trying to take over. Feedback? Fri, 27 Jul 2012 20:35:39 EST Team Challenges? Any interest in starting new challenges?
Fri, 27 Jul 2012 20:29:45 EST New to team and to Karate Hello,
My name is Alicia. My husband and I just signed up for classes at the same school our girls train. They are very young but have been enrolled since November of last year. I'm really excited to start but at the same time a bit terrified.

I'm most likely the heaviest person in the class, and although I've been attending cage fitness classes at the school I am still a bit self conscious that I won't be able to keep up with the group. I would appreciate any advice or ti... Sat, 21 Jul 2012 22:06:26 EST Weekly check in July 21-27 Hi ladies, hope everyone is doing well. We had a very damp class today, it started warm and muggy and ended with everyone streaming, lots of kata and ground work. My ex showed up 101 after not seeing him for a few months I'd hoped he wouldn't be back, but I do not have to work with him so it was fine. In our school we're expected to take responsibility for our own safety and not working with a partner that you don't feel safe (aside from the normal risks involved in any contact act... Sat, 21 Jul 2012 19:43:23 EST Weekly Check In July 14-21 Hey ladies, hope everyone is having a great weekend! I'm at work today but still floating with joy over last nights 'invite-only' training. I was the lowest rank invited, and the training was held by the amazing Judo master that thrilled me by coming to my wine party a few weeks back. We worked some pretty advanced material that's really 'old-school Japanese', things that are not taught at 'Sport' Judo schools.
Fun! Sat, 14 Jul 2012 13:49:42 EST New to the team HI, I just joined the team. It looks like it's not really active, but that's ok. I just tested for my Purple belt and passed. I do tkd and love it. It is a real challenge because I am short 5'2 and over 200 lbs. I am the only woman in my class except for my dd10. My dh, and ds6 also take the class with me.

I have searched sparkpeople and would really like to know of some stretching moves that can help me in tkd. Anyone have any advise? Mon, 9 Jul 2012 16:27:48 EST Weekly check in July 7-13th New week, new thread, how's everyone doing?
Japanese festival today and we (my class) have a demo, got to run to get ready for that. Have a great day ladies! Sat, 7 Jul 2012 13:25:45 EST Weekly Check in June 30- July 6 I hope everyone has a great weekend and wonderful week in the coming days.
Things at work have been tough, at home it's been tough and now that I have my car back and can get to class, I'm not doing great. Thursdays class had me in tears, so I may not go tomorrow (today). I probably will, but it's crossed my mind to take a day to relax. Sat, 30 Jun 2012 04:14:23 EST Weekly Check in Jun 23-29 I thought i would go ahead and start this weeks check in since i was gonna post!

Today was Black Belt Workout! Wow, I am HURTING again! I need to practice forms again and again. I still keep forgetting some parts!

Push ups and sit ups were not as bad, but still Bad! LOL!

Legs are hurting more today. Guess I should go take a rest!!

Alicia Sat, 23 Jun 2012 14:08:24 EST Weekly check in June 16-22 I hope everyone is having a great weekend!
Today I'm playing hooky. I could go to class, but my almost good reason for not oldest is dancing in a performance downtown today. In order to see the performance, I would need to leave class 45 minutes early.
With my 8 year old guest, craziness at work and my daughter's upcoming Tuesday departure to take a 90 day job in the bush, I'm losing my mind (just a little).
Today, I give myself permission to skip. Sat, 16 Jun 2012 13:41:19 EST Weekly check in June 3-June 9 About 30 minutes early by my clock but my internet's been spotty, want to make sure this gets going 30

After a very frustrating evening Thursday, I'm looking forward to class tomorrow. Saturday's class is an hour and a half like the weekday classes, but upper belts and those invited by Sensei (I'm one of them) meet an hour early to work weapons and refinement. It's in some ways more laid back and mellow, but the bo and sanka (sp?) are very traditional and full of ritual... Sat, 9 Jun 2012 03:39:45 EST Weekly check in June 2-June 8 New week, new thread. In 1 1/2 hours I will begin my first belt test in 7 1/2 years! While I am incredibly nervous, I'm also excited and just thrilled that I made it this far. 1 1/2 years ago I was 300# and couldn't put my own socks or shoes on. Today I'm testing in Jujitsu. 104
Have a great day all, I will post results tonight. Sat, 2 Jun 2012 12:54:03 EST Weekly Check in May 26- June 2 Last week of May already! Wow.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, originally my class was to test today, but half the students that would've tested are out of town for Memorial Day. The test is now scheduled for next Saturday, so another week to prepare (yay) or stress (oh no!) depending on the mood.
Take care ladies. Sat, 26 May 2012 13:03:22 EST Kung Fu weapon bag Hello there ladies!

This may not apply to many of you, but I figured I would put the feelers out there. In my Kung Fu class, we learn both open hand forms and weapon forms and my weapons are starting to add up. Most of the people who go to the school use ski bags to hold their weapons in, but I was wondering if there are any martial arts bags out there for such things. The ski bags are difficult for me to find locally out of season and my google fu is weak and I haven't been able t... Thu, 24 May 2012 13:51:27 EST Aikido anyone Hi does anyone do Aikido? I am working towards my 3 kyu Mon, 21 May 2012 21:51:05 EST Weekly check in May 19-25 Hi all, while we are wrapped in the joys of the weekend, make sure to find time for yourselves!
I'm off to class in a few minutes, last week before our belt test and the nervousness is palpable in the dojo. It's also my birthday today and instead of a party I'm hosting a birthday hike, it should be wonderful.
Have a great one! Sat, 19 May 2012 12:52:31 EST Weekly Check-in May 12 - 18 Happy Mother's Day. Just checking into Spark after some weeding around my Mother's Day marigolds and saw that no-one had started a new thread.

Question: Most of my other teams have a monthly chat topic rather than changing threads on a weekly basis. Now that the activity in this group has slowed down, do we want to change to a monthly discussion?

Ari Sun, 13 May 2012 16:51:15 EST Bye for now I had a long talk with myself this weekend and finally bit the bullet and quit kung fu this morning.

When I was at Alpha, I was made to feel dedicated and committed. At Plum Blossom, I was made to feel lazy and worthless. I'm the same person with the same attitudes and behaviors. You tell me what's different.

Anyway, don't expect to see me around much. After two bad experiences with martial arts, I'm not in a big hurry to try out a third. So if you want someone who ... Mon, 7 May 2012 08:49:36 EST Weekly check-in May 4 - May 11 I was all set to go to class this morning and fell asleep on the couch. Ah, well, I'll do Monday.

Hope everyone has a great week! Sat, 5 May 2012 12:17:20 EST Help - How to Calculate Calories I'm having lots of trouble figuring out calories used in martial arts and planning my day correctly. I seem to move between not eating enough and feeling faint to eating so much that I gain weight despite all the exercise. I just can't seem to find the right balance since I can't seem to figure out just how many calories I am burning. Anyone have any tips for figuring this out?

My stand-up classes involve full contact sparring (continual not one or two step) as well as lots of ... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 09:00:17 EST Weekly check-in April 28 - May 4 Didn't go to class - slept on the couch so that DH wouldn't be woken up by my coughing. :-( Hope everyone else is doing well! Sat, 28 Apr 2012 11:57:36 EST New Member =^_^= Hi everyone! I've been on and off with SparkPeople since 2009 but things are finally falling into place for me and I'm doing well. I currently practice Isshinryu Karate, and though I have graduated and moved far away from the home dojo at Penn State, I work out once a week with a number of sensei's who live in the greater Philadelphia area. I have also practiced Tai Chi in the past and would love to get back to it once I am more settled (prepping for wedding now!). Otherwise, glad to be here,... Wed, 25 Apr 2012 15:54:07 EST Weekly check-in April 21 - 27 Seriously? No one started this week's thread?

I woke up this morning with a sore throat and coughing up junk, so I didn't want to get anyone sick, but Laoshi had said they were doing a lesson on effective strikes so I wanted to hear it. I went in with a notebook and sat on the edge of the floor and took notes and watched. It was interesting. It was also unfortunate that I wasn't in class because there was an uneven number of people. :-( Natalia was urging me to join class (ye... Sat, 21 Apr 2012 22:45:47 EST New Hi ladies! I'm new to Spark People and love martial arts. My issue with weight loss has always been the nutrition side since I enjoy exercise. But, as I've gotten older and had kids all the accumulated extra weight is really slowing me down and contributing to problems with knee pain and such, so I'm hoping I can finally get my eating under control. I currently practice BJJ and also a modified type of Thai Boxing. Before I had kids, I took a few years of Kung Fu,, which was also lots of ... Thu, 19 Apr 2012 12:44:43 EST Weekly check-in April 14 - 20 Today Laoshi took four experienced students and paired them with the four white belts and had the experienced students test the white belts' ability to handle random blocks. That left me and Allen who worked on what Laoshi and I were doing yesterday. I realized I keep aiming my punches for his midsection, which leaves my head wide open. I've always been bad about protecting my head - no one really targeted it in tkd. There were a couple of kids who could kick at head height, but they were... Sat, 14 Apr 2012 12:28:00 EST Weekly check-in April 7 - 13 Hey all... I guess I'm back to starting the thread again. Well, okay.

Ann, I'm sorry too, that you needed to dash out like that - what scary thing!! I'm so glad it mostly turned out okay. That is awful.

Alicia, I hope the race went well and you achieved your personal best. :)

Cassie, I hope the move goes/has gone smoothly and you find an equally nice place to train. Good luck in the process!!

Annette, hope you do get to a class somewhere along the ... Sat, 7 Apr 2012 09:47:47 EST Weekly check-in March 31 - April 6 Hey everyone! Surprise!!

Thought I'd start the thread, because I have a bit of time on my hands, and all things being equal, I'm hoping to get back to karate this week, so I feel like I can be here more "legitimately"... :)

I haven't had a chance to read through how the last couple of weeks have been for people - my apologies, but I hope things are generally going well for everyone.

I have heard from the dojo a couple of times since I announced that I'd be ta... Sat, 31 Mar 2012 08:08:20 EST Weekly check-in March 24 - 30 Based on Irene's status on Facebook, I don't think she's starting this week's thread, so I'll do it. :-)

I haven't been to class since Monday. I have been angry about it and trying to decide what to do. Definitely not going to Masters Class again, and definitely not looking forward to the large piles of crap I'm going to take when they ask why not and I say I've decided I'm not ready for it. Sat, 21 Jan 2012 08:14:29 EST Weekly check-in Jan 14 - 20 Hey all...
Well, we got dumped with a ton of snow over the last 36 hours or so, too.... It's all pretty and white out there right now, but this morning it's a bitter cold, and I'm supposed to run about 7K... Ugh. Oh well, it's going to force me to see how good my gear is. I've got a lot of good stuff, so I'm not terribly worried. Tomorrow's going to be much nicer for my longer run, so that's good news.

Ann, sounds like you had a really fun class tossing your teenager around.... Sat, 14 Jan 2012 08:12:16 EST What do you do when it stops being fun? These past few weeks I've been having a lot of trouble with motivation. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice for what to do when you start feeling really lackluster about martial arts practice. I'm midway through my second year of studying kung fu with my college's branch of our school, and a lot of the wild enthusiasm I've always felt for it has been fading recently.

I feel like some of it is due to personality clash with a couple of the newer students, but there must be... I'll make it to BB class Wed night, though.

I'm off to run a "Santa Shuffle" 5K race. It snowed a couple of days ago, and this time it stuck around, so it should be interesting. Sat, 29 Oct 2011 08:16:40 EST Black Belt Testing Requirements Hi Ladies,

I know this topic has been visited before, but my boss asked me to get your input on your own school's Black Belt Testing Requirements. We are changing our curriculum a little with the coming of the new year and Mr. Hargis wants things to be more challenging at ALL levels, but especially at the Black Belt Testings. Any input you could offer to give us some ideas of what to add, take out, tweak, etc. would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Donna Sat, 29 Oct 2011 08:06:00 EST Weekly check-in Oct 29 - Nov 4 Holy smokes, people!! I never thought about taking Karate except when I was my sons age. We changed Karate schools and the new teacher (sensei)? I wanted to introduce myself. About a two months ago, I started taking my 6yo daughter to kung fu after months of her asking about it because her little bff has been taking it for awhile. My 13 yo son has been sedentary and interested in not much else besides movies and video games for awhile, so about a month ago I finally persuaded him to take a class and he was hooked after the first class. I played around and started to learn the first form so I could help my son, and real... Thu, 15 Sep 2011 13:36:39 EST Weekly check-in Sept 10 to Sept 16 Interesting discussion on the differences between men and women in the dojo. I would have to say that there are no differences in how men and women in our dojo are treated, for the most part. I can remember that when we were doing warm-ups in my early stages, and it didn't matter who was running them, if Shihan was around, and we were flat on our backs doing some sort of core work, sometimes he'd "walk" on the guys' stomach. He wouldn't put much weight on...he'd just walk around the room and ... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 07:38:14 EST New and training for my FIRST Kung Fu sash! Hello Ladies!

It’s nice to find a place where women can discuss their arts! I’m new to Spark, new to weight loss and new to Kung Fu.

First, I’d like to share that this time last year I was an overweight couch potato with zero motivation. I then turned 30 and decided the next 30 years would be lived healthier and happier. I needed a change, mind and body. I am really looking forward to being just another pair of hands, but also sending as much positive energy to those participants as possible. I talked to Shihan about it ... Sat, 23 Jul 2011 07:22:55 EST Newbie here! Hello fellow martial artists!

My name is Valerie and I'm new to this Spark Team and also to the world of martial arts. I started taking Kung Fu classes about a month and a half ago and I'm already hooked. Last Friday I actually passed my first test and will be presented with my white sash tonight (excited!) and start learning my second set of forms. I'm extremely lucky to have a fantastic Kwan Jang-Nim (9th degree in Tae Kwon Do, Hap Ki Do, and Kung Fu) and very supportive classmat... Tue, 19 Jul 2011 13:54:19 EST Weekly check-in July 16 - 22 Another Saturday, and another hot one around here...!!

Just got back from a 4K run, and I'm glad I went relatively early, or I'd be sweltering through it, for sure.

Hope everyone's weekend is shaping up well.... Tell us what's up! (No karate again for me until Mon night....) Sat, 16 Jul 2011 08:18:27 EST Hello, I'm new to the team! Hi everyone!

My step daughter (she's 13) and I just started taking Tae Kwon Do at the beginning of June, and we're loving it so far. I figured it was something healthy that we could do together, and I think every woman should know how to defend themselves. So far it's going great and I look forward to going each week (we go twice a week actually).

I also enjoy running, lifting weights, snowboarding and pretty much anything active.

I'm looking forward to chat... Tue, 12 Jul 2011 11:32:11 EST Ni Hao Ma Hey all!

I've just recently re-found Sparkpeople and decided to look for a martial arts SparkTeam.
I'm so glad to have found you guys.

I started Nei Wai Chia tai chi and kung fu about a month ago. I've just received my first promotion last week. Todai Erh/yellow sash. I can't believe I've fallen in love. I figured I would like it, I would enjoy it.. but I really did not realize that it would be life altering. I'm sore, I sweat, I'm covered in weird bruises that I ha... Tue, 12 Jul 2011 08:40:09 EST Weekly check-in July 9 - 15 Hey all....

Well, I hope Shelley got away - we'll know on Monday, I'm hoping....

Only workout for me today is my 3K run. Had a day off yesterday and LOVED it. I apparently needed the break. Whew.

Gorgeous day today here.... Hope you're all having the same and a good start to a wonderful weekend.... Looks promising here! Sat, 9 Jul 2011 08:16:32 EST balance As I posted in my previous post, I am 47 years old. I have had fibromyalgia since my early 20s. One of things I have noticed over the years is that is really, really affects my balance. Does anybody have any tips or suggestions for improving general balance and coordination.

I realize that this may sound like a dumb question to some, but Fibro really does mess with your equilibrium for some reason and this seems to be one of my greatest challenges in training. I can work thro... Thu, 7 Jul 2011 09:47:42 EST Kind of new here I joined a long time ago but have been MIA. I went to the Dr last week and he made me get
On the scale so I am back. Will post more later. Phone not cooperating. Sun, 3 Jul 2011 11:27:23 EST Weekly check-in July 2 - 8 Hey all.... Here's the start of this week's thread. Raining heavily here...sporadically, so I will have to look for a window to get my 3K run in.... It shows promise of letting up and/or clearing, so I should get a bit of a break in there. I just won't run when one single raindrop is like a bucket of water. They've been coming down that big on and off.... Drizzle doesn't bother me much... We'll see.

Cindy, that does sound like a lot of testing going on in your relatively small doj... Sat, 2 Jul 2011 08:35:37 EST It's time to say farewell... I want to say thank you for the many moments of laughter and good memories I have had over the years with all of you ladies. I am so proud of each and every one of you...I'm even blessed to be able to be called "friend" by some of you and I know my life would have been much different without each and every one of you being a part of my journey. To Irene and two are closest to my heart and I cherish our many chats together...I will never forget your comfort and support. To all... Tue, 28 Jun 2011 13:32:01 EST Weekly check-in June 25 - July 1 Okay, gang, here's hoping for a much better week for some on this list...! It has been a doozie!

No combat, no anything else today. I have already logged ridiculous amounts of exercise this week, so I am just doing my 3k run this morning (I hope), and that's IT!! I need a 'rest day'! Sat, 25 Jun 2011 07:41:05 EST Eat yogurt, not potatoes Interesting article. Not a ton of detail, but I'm sure the study is out there for the googling.

th-science/potatoes-bad-nuts-good-for-
staying-slim-harvard-study-finds/2011/
06/17/AGRWmIgH_story.html?tid=sm_twitt
er_washingtonpost
Thu, 23 Jun 2011 17:51:00 EST my deepest apologies... When I made my post about the tree last night, I was still rattled and very much thankful that I wasn't killed in a freak accident. It was never my intention to insult or offend anyone with my comments about who I was greatful to for what I considered a close call. I can only apologize and ask for anyone's forgiveness that might have been offended by my post.

Take care to all and I hope you have a great day,

Donna Wed, 22 Jun 2011 13:00:06 EST Weekly check-in June 18 - June 24 Happy Saturday morning!!

Well, yesterday was a rest day (after 4 straight days of gruelling workouts, I'm okay with that!), but today I'm going to hit the gym for Combat. It's the last time they're offering it until the fall. Poor Jana who has been leading it every Sat morning for over 2 years wanted a break from the steady commitment of her weekends, and they couldn't find anyone else willing to take the Sat morning time slot, so off it went. I think Zumba will be replacing it, or... Sat, 18 Jun 2011 08:22:59 EST Hello everyone - New Member Hi all!

I'm Heather, currently a stay at home mom of three (4, 6, 8)

We are all training in martial arts - the Korean Tang Soo Do to be exact. I LOVE it. I started about a year ago. It gives me a huge sense of pride knowing what I can do, what ive learned, and how i feel after class.

Myself, husband, and three children are all training together. My daughter (4), is a Tiny Tiger. My oldest son is on our Demo/Comp team, and is an Orange Stripe (Orange w/ green... Mon, 13 Jun 2011 21:30:45 EST Weekly check-in June 11-17 Just a reminder - anyone can start the weekly thread. If you're the first to visit the team on Saturday, go ahead and start it off!

I had forms class this morning. At first I thought I was going to be the only student. Then Allen showed up, and then a bunch of people trickled in. Interestingly, a lot of the regulars didn't show, so the highest ranked student there was a yellow sash. There were five of us with no sash, and I was the only one of us who knew beng bu, so the rest ... Sat, 11 Jun 2011 11:55:25 EST Bowing In! So glad to find this group. I am 37 and just started Kenpo Karate in August after watching my son participate and compete for over 3 years. Currently an alpha yellow and working toward passing my belt requirements for orange. Takes me a little longer because of the demands of my job not allowing me to put in the hours at the dojo that I would like.

I absolutely love this sport (especially sparring which I have decided is my new healthy addiction). I love to do sport karate an... Wed, 8 Jun 2011 13:06:58 EST Hello there! I'm brand new to SparkPeople, but I'm pretty excited to get going. I've been doing Capoeira for four years and Northern Shaolin style kung fu for around one year, and all I want to do recently is practice! Capoeira may be my first love, but Northern Shaolin is a real passion for me these days.

I'm actually looking to lose weight partially because of martial arts--I want to drop a weight class in shuai-chiao--permanently, not through reducing--because at my last tournament I was in... Tue, 7 Jun 2011 11:00:31 EST Weekly check-in June 4-10 No karate stuff today, but Combat this morning and another session this afternoon. Just as well. There's a thunder storm in full swing there's no way to get stuff done outside, like laundry and gardening.... Guess that'll wait until tomorrow.... Sigh. Sat, 4 Jun 2011 08:30:27 EST Hi! :) Although I haven't been doing martial arts for too long, I absolutely love everything it has to offer!
I started Judo back in September thinking it would be a great way to cross-train on land for my swim team (I have a lot of strength and stamina, but I can't run to save my life.. O__O), and boy was I right, and then some!

Joining Judo was one of the best decisions I've made. I love how I feel during and (especially) after practice, learning new things, and because the female ... Fri, 3 Jun 2011 12:53:48 EST New ideas? Apparently the 12-week challenge the company put up only included 11 weeks of workouts. I keep watching for week 12 and it doesn't appear. I don't expect another challenge until Fall - they don't do them over the summer for some reason. And it doesn't seem like this was particularly popular - there were an awful lot of workouts that required access to equipment. :-p

Anyway, since that's done, and since I haven't changed the other challenges since that started, it seems time for... Wed, 1 Jun 2011 08:35:05 EST Weekly Check-in May 28 - Jun 3 Well, I have nothing going on today, but figured I'd start out this week's thread.

Happy Memorial Day to the Americans on the team! Sat, 28 May 2011 12:42:56 EST Hi From Texas!! Hi Team!!
My name is Lori and I just restarted WTF Tae Kwon Do after a four year absence. My rank is green belt and that is where I stopped my training after I broke my arm in a competition. After 6 months of being in a cast from hand to shoulder and 3 months of physical therapy, I let my fears get the better of me and I never returned. My children, 12 & 9 are 1st Poom Black Belts. They earned their black belts in January 2009 and were so burned out that they wanted a long break. We... Mon, 23 May 2011 17:26:42 EST Weekly challenges - week 11 Sorry, folks. I seem to have forgotten to put up last week. If anyone is interested, holler and I'll put it up.

Beginner workout:

_plan_generator_details.asp?id=53

Advanced workout:

_plan_generator_details.asp?id=68
Mon, 23 May 2011 08:28:22 EST Weekly Check-in May 21 - May 27 Wow, Annette, that does sound like some jam packed sparring seminar. In my knee jerk reaction, I'd have to think that sparring is sparring is sparring, but apparently there's a lot to learn from the different styles. Who knew?! That would be one distinct advantage to studying in more than one style. Or, at the very least, it would be great if a number of different styles could come together and just hold a massive sparring workshop for people from all those styles. I think that would be very ... Sat, 21 May 2011 08:09:28 EST Back to Tae Kwon Do A year and a half ago I earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 37 (I'm 39 now). For various reasons I took about a year off and in that time I gained 20 pounds and lost stamina and agility. I'm back in the dojang so I'm ready to get back into fighting shape. It would be awesome to reach my goal before my next step test (application Yi Dan). Tue, 17 May 2011 00:02:06 EST Weekly check-in May 14 - 20 Good Saturday to all...!! Here's hoping this week brings better news to those who are in one quandary or another.... I'm thinking thoughts of receding water and a return to health, in particular!!

Well, no Combat this morning at the gym, because Zumba training has taken over the space. That's twice in recent memory that they've thrown out our schedule on a Saturday for the sake of training new instructors...always for Zumba, and it's a class I can't even get to. It's hardly fair - ... But I just finished my Insanity Plyometric Cardio Circuit workout so I wasn't totally lazy today. :-) I'm loving Insanity. It's exactly what I wanted, and no one yells at me when I feel like I need to take a break. My heartrate monitor blinked at me this morning because I'd gotten my heartrate to 101% so I was working to keep it around 97% after that. Burned somewhere around 350 calories in a 35 min workout. :-) Sat, 7 May 2011 12:12:08 EST Martial Artist needs motivation I have been doing Martial Arts for almost 4 years now. I just recently became a Senior Red belt. In my system, the next step up will be Probationary Black. Right now I am struggling with motivation to continue Martial Arts. For me this is a big deal, because M.A. has been a very big part of my life. It was the main driving force of me losing 65 pounds about 2 years ago. Besides physically , it has changed me for the better mentally as well. 4 years ago, I started with my 3 children. As time w... Bad cold has me pretty flattened today, so I'm laying low. No Combat...maybe just going for a walk since it's a spectacularly beautiful day. Hope all is good with everyone. Sat, 30 Apr 2011 08:59:31 EST Weekly challenges - week 7 Oddly, the beginner workout requires machines and the advanced is all machine-less.

Beginner workout

_plan_generator_details.asp?id=200

Advanced workout

_plan_generator_details.asp?id=61
Sat, 23 Apr 2011 12:58:10 EST Weekly check-in Apr 23 - 29 In the midst of the Easter weekend. Best wishes to those of you who celebrate it. It's the 'big mass' tonight in our church...I'll be there!

Will be hitting Combat later this morning, and then off to work out again with John, since he happened to have some time in his weekend - and he offered an extra workout if I wanted it. Oh heck, yeah!! I don't plan to go nuts this weekend with food, but the additional workout is still always a good idea, I think.

Well, time to cook... Kind of a grey day around these parts. And cold. Makes me want to stay in and putz. But I will be getting to Combat this morning. Didn't get there Thurs because of multiple meetings in the evening, but ended up doing cardio at home instead (at least a bit, anyway - not the hour I would have liked).

Hope everyone is having a good start to their weekend.

Annette, I could see where the expectation of Kung Fu being a good workout (and then not ha... I wanted to introduce myself, I'm 29 and for ~ 2.5 months have been consistent in working out and eating healthy with a modest amount of weight loss. ~ 3-4 week ago discovered Hap Ki Do at my local YMCA and have since been attending classes 3 times per week with one of my friends. I absolutely love it. I see some results, although I still look ridiculous most of the time with kicks/ rolls/ etc.

I am really excited about finding a martial arts group for women! Sat, 9 Apr 2011 15:02:48 EST Weekly check-in Apr 9 - 15 Hey all. Happy Saturday!!

Had my second workout with my new personal trainer. Oh. My. Word. He really went easy on me Wed, because yesterday was CA-RAY-ZEEE!! I was HEAVING at intervals throughout the workout, and today every part of me is feeling it!!! Everything except my quads. The really exciting thing is that I was chatting with his client right after me (I think John had gone off to get a snack), and she was saying she has lost 18 lbs since Christmas! And she's already pretty... Sat, 9 Apr 2011 07:58:23 EST Hello! I'm excited about this phase in my life. I will be turning 40 in June and want to be a healthier me. Although I don't have any health issues right now, they could start to creep up if I don't get it together. I am a red belt in UPKUDO karate and I love it! I love what karate does for me mentally, physically and spiritually. 30 Wed, 6 Apr 2011 17:09:24 EST Weekly challenges - week 4 Beginner

_plan_generator_details.asp?id=42

Advanced (no gym equipment this week, but does require weights)

_plan_generator_details.asp?id=41
Mon, 4 Apr 2011 20:51:02 EST Weekly Check-in Apr 2 - Apr 8 Hey gang... Back on Canadian soil, but not quite home. I guess the travel agency thought that being up for 22 consecutive hours was going to be bad enough (by the time we cleared Customs, etc) that they didn't want to tack on another 4 hour bus ride on top of that... So we're heading home later this morning. Talked to DH already (last night), and all is ok at home...

The trip was quite extraordinary... Lots more I can say, but not exactly MA related... :) it was really a pilgrimage... Sat, 2 Apr 2011 05:42:44 EST Inspiring video :) Hi,
I just had to share this link to a super inspiring video from an all female martial arts championship in Maryland. How would one go about doing so?

Karate classes aren't static - some nights we do a more physical stuff (kata, etc.) and other nights we do a lot of discussion.

I feel guilty for wanting to somehow track my karate on the fitness tracker, but it would probably make me feel less guilty for eating mid/high on my food range 46 Tue, 22 Mar 2011 16:13:02 EST Weekly challenges - week 2 This week's advanced workout requires gym equipment. I thought I'd post them here in case anyone else wants to do them. Not much else to report for now. Sat, 12 Mar 2011 08:40:14 EST Hello Hi! I just joined this team. I recently restarted TKD a few weeks ago after an 8 year hiatus. I did TKD throughout high school and the beginning of college. I got to 1st Dan and had to quit when life got too busy. I'm back and training again! It's been very challenging, learning new techniques, relearning old techniques and adjusting physically to the level of fitness required for this sport. :)
I'm glad I found this team! I've been active on SP for about 4 months now and I love it!
... Fri, 11 Mar 2011 19:22:18 EST Weekly check in Mar 5 to 11 Hey all.... Get to head out to shovel snow this morning. Oh yay. DD comes home tomorrow night because this is their Reading Week...she's off visiting highschool friends until tomorrow, then here by bus. She and I are heading out to the west coast as of Wed, so I'll only be popping in here to see what y'all are up to, because I won't be in karate this week at all. Sat, 19 Feb 2011 07:16:31 EST Hi Everybody I have been doing martial arts off and on since I was in high school. I started in Taekwondo and got to be a brown belt but my money ran after this three year stint and I had to quit, it took away a major pillar of my self esteem and I had to compensate with other fitness activities. I did do some mixed martial arts before moving but now I have yet to find a place to really get started here in Finland. I want to keep doing martial arts. I like taekwondo, boxing, wing chung, and some others th... Fri, 18 Feb 2011 07:36:19 EST New Karate Woman I'm Judy. I'm 39 and live in Maine. Sun, 13 Feb 2011 13:59:38 EST Uniform/Gi Construction Hi all.

Recently there's been a lot of talk in the Weekly Check-In threads about making a karate gi. That's fine, but it takes away from the purpose of that particular thread which is to check in and support each other with what challenges we are facing and congratulate each other on our successes (or at least that's my interpretation. If I'm wrong, I humbly apologize).

If anyone is interested, I would like to post periodic photos from layout to completion of a uniform... Sat, 12 Feb 2011 10:29:27 EST Weekly check-in Feb 12 -18 Hey all.... Starting us off with a fresh new thread.

Heading off to Combat later this morning, and then tomorrow, we've got a 3-hr training opportunity with Shihan Yabunaka, who's coming up just to offer the session. He loves us all up here, so it'll be kind of fun. It'll be all about kata, I'm pretty sure, with just brown and black belts. Shihan has been putting the pressure on for all of us to attend. I had every intention of it, though I can hardly afford the time.... Just one ... Sat, 12 Feb 2011 08:03:51 EST Weekly check-in Feb 5 to 11 Hey all.... Here's our thread for the next week....

Nothing too exciting here.... DH is away for the week so it's just the lad and me. He's got me a little worried (relationship issues, maybe...I'll probably find out later today) but we get on real well, so it should be an okay week. He's having a bunch of friends over for a Superbowl party tomorrow, so that should be fun. They'll take over the basement, and I'll just keep throwing food down at them now and again. Hah.

A... Sat, 5 Feb 2011 08:06:24 EST New member Hey! I'm excited to find a team that has such a unique common interest! I have been studying Karate since April and just earned my green belt. It began as a family thing, as I was going with my six year old son. Now, I have begun to think of this endeavor as something for myself- I new goal to accomplish! I am just at the beginning to my weight loss process and Karate has a lot to do with it. It makes me feel a lot better about myself! Sun, 30 Jan 2011 22:17:47 EST New member Hey! I'm excited to find a team that has such a unique common interest! It asks my age and weight, and then gives me a count of calories burned as I go. However, when I enter the time spent on the elliptical into fitness tracker, it gives me a totally different amount. Today, for example, I was on the elliptical for an hour, and it said I burned 504 calories. The fitness tracker said 772. Does anyone else have this problem, or any ideas about it? Sun, 30 Jan 2011 14:02:11 EST Another new member :) Hi,
I am 41 and yesterday earned my yellow stripe in kyukido along with my 10 year old daughter. We've been practicing since September but go only once a week. I'd like to attend more but we have scheduling conflicts. :( I do enjoy it, and if I have to be in my 50s before I make black belt then so be it. It's nice to have a forum of women to share experiences. Sun, 30 Jan 2011 10:58:03 EST Weekly Check in Jan 29 - Feb 4 Seriously, I'm the first one here?

Forms class this morning. We went through ba shi as a group and then everyone worked beng bu. Alana, Helena and I were shuffled off to the side as usual. Helena is a tai chi instructor and a yellow sash in kung fu. She was away from kung fu for a while which is why she's saddled with us newbies, but with her tai chi background, she's absolutely amazing to watch. Very flowing. I want to be like her when I grow up.

I really like ben... Sat, 29 Jan 2011 11:54:03 EST Weekly Check in Jan 22 - 28 Hey all...never mentioned that I didn't make it to BB class on Wed night because Shihan was running another refereeing clinic in lieu of training (sorry, but not my cup of tea, and he knows that so I hope he wasn't annoyed that I didn't show). That day I also found out that the husband of a good friend of mine died of pancreatic was about a 2.5 year battle. Her twin boys studied at our dojo, and they went to school with DD and played football with DS...they all go to our church...... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 08:41:35 EST HELP! To All Moms...Young & Old... Calling on all moms out there...

It's been 22 years since MY baby might have any of these issues so I'm calling in the experts...YOU LADIES!

Is anyone dealing with or has dealt with a 7 month old baby who wakes up from a dead sleep throughout the night about every hour SCREAMING like someone had put hot coals to their feet? And then take about an hour or more to calm down enough to go back to sleep before waking up again the following hour SCREAMING from a dead sleep? ... Fri, 21 Jan 2011 12:01:26 EST New to team Hello ladies,
I am new to your team but not to Spark People. My son (7 1/2) and I joined a Karate dojo about 14 months ago and have been doing our Martial Arts journey together. I take classes three times a week and he comes with me two of those days. We started because he wanted to learn Karate and talked me into coming with him. (Our dojo is very family friendly with lots of parent/child groups in class.)
I am loving Karate and everything we have learned in the past year plus ... Tue, 18 Jan 2011 16:12:06 EST Weekly Checkin Jan 15 - 21 Here's the new thread... Happy snowy Saturday to all (well, it's snowing around here...). Sat, 15 Jan 2011 09:12:43 EST Glad to be a new team member! Hi everyone! I'm a 43 year old mom of two who practices and teaches the traditional Korean martial art of Kuk Sool Won. There aren't a lot of women at my school, and no one else is on a weight loss journey.
I'm excited to learn from other women martial artists! Wed, 12 Jan 2011 15:48:39 EST Hi! I'm the 400th to join! Glad to find this team. I'm the only woman at my aikido dojo and I think it will be fun to find out you all's point of view and fitness suggestions. I started aikido August of 2010 and started spark people in December 2010. After 5 months I can definitely tell a difference in my core strength but wasn't losing any weight because of my increased appetite. Thanks for starting this team! Tue, 11 Jan 2011 09:42:48 EST Weekly check-in Jan 8 - 14 Morning all! Off to Combat later.... Not much else new. Did my Insanity DVD last night.

Finally down a POUND!! WOOOHOOOO Long and slow battle, but I'll take it! Sat, 8 Jan 2011 09:25:17 EST Hi Hi everyone! I'm Bree and I started taking Ketsugo (a blend of Karate,Judo,Jujitso, aikido and savate) 9 weeks ago and love it. I've been interested in martial arts since I took a self defense class (hosted by the dojo I'm going to) about 10 years ago but just never started because it seemed intimidating to jump in with all the higher belts at our local school. My 8 year old Son had been asking to start so when a friend mentioned that her and her son , her SIL and her kids were starting I sign... Fri, 7 Jan 2011 11:06:42 EST Returning I was in this group a couple of years ago; then I started having internet connection problems, and got out of the habit of coming to sparkpeople at all.

Last October, I tested for my 5th degree black belt in TaeKwon-Do, and as part of my preparations I worked out 3-4 days a week in other instructors' classes, rather than the 1-2 I usually do (I also teach my own class twice a week) and because of the extra workout, I lost about 15 pounds. It's starting to creep back on, and I wa... Tue, 4 Jan 2011 09:25:47 EST new to the team HI,
I practice Tang Soo Do. I am a third degree bb. I have been having problems with my back and knees. Hoping to lose 50lbs so I can train easier. Sun, 2 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST Weekly Check In January 1 - 7, 2011 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Here's hoping we all have a healthy, happy and prosperous 2011!!

Sat, 1 Jan 2011 08:26:48 EST Something different in January I was trying to come up with something different for this month.

Jan 1 - do one push-up.
Jan 2 - do two push-ups.
Jan 3 - do three push-ups.
and so on ...
Jan 31 - do thirty-one push-ups.

Do as many as you can from your toes with good form. That means getting to about 3 inches from the floor, butt in line with shoulders and toes. I'm hoping that on Jan 1, everyone can do one of these. After that, you're your own best judge, but do as many as you ca... Tue, 28 Dec 2010 21:10:29 EST Introduction Hi. I'm Felicia and I study Taekwondo. I started years ago, when I was in college and achieved a rank of green belt(5 belt system). But I seriously hurt my knee and had to re-think the whole thing, stopped for about 20 years. My two boys ages 8 and 10 started and love it. I was so excited and decided to join the Mom's class. I started over from the beginning and am working on my green belt.

I love my do jang, it is kid friendly, mom friendly, and has several "older" adults ju... I hope everyone that celebrates has a wonderful time with family and friends!!

I can't believe the new year is right around the corner. Time flies! Here's hoping 2011 is a better year for all. Sat, 25 Dec 2010 06:56:01 EST Weekly Check in December 18 - 24 I'm feeling like a bit of a hypocrite... Here I am starting off the new thread when I've barely been checking in.... What a couple of weeks I've had. I'm still adjusting to working full time. What was I thinking starting a new job on December 1st?!?!

I tried to go to class on Tuesday. I should restate that... I tried to participate in class Tuesday. We started class with running around the dojo - after 4 laps we had to stop and do different ab exercises, then repeat this cycle... Sat, 18 Dec 2010 08:28:16 EST New member intro Tang Soo!

I've just begun studying martial arts, and re-committing myself to my health as well.

My daughter started this fall at a local Do Jang, studying Tang Soo Do / Mo Duk Kwan (Korean style). She just got her yellow belt, and I promised her that I'd start, too. So I'm a new white belt, learning it for the first time.

I LOVE my Do Jang. First of all, it's close to home. Second, it's a great studio - rated best in the county for all martial arts studio... Wed, 15 Dec 2010 18:39:35 EST Weekly check-in Dec 11 to 16 Good morning ladies!

I've never started a new weekly post before but since I have been awake since 2 am, stressing over my seminar which starts in 2 1/2 thought I would get this ball rolling!

My left heel doesn't hurt too much this morning but my right leg could be better. Mr. Hargis has already told me to be extremely careful with the floor and pad drills this mornings and to modify as needed...he basically reminded me not to do anything stupid!
<... Sat, 11 Dec 2010 06:34:24 EST New (karate) Kid on the Block Hello all- I'm relatively new to martial arts, but am more well-versed in SparkPeople. I've tried a number of diets from Weight Watchers to South Beach, but for me, it's exercise that really does the trick. Therefore, I joined my school's karate club over a year ago, and I have been loving every minute of it since.
I am involved with Penn State's Karate Club- Isshinryu Style, and I have also done some work with Tai Chi, which I also enjoyed. I am looking to continue in both after gradua... Fri, 10 Dec 2010 14:04:54 EST Weekly check-in Dec 4 to 10 Wow...the big countdown is on. Three weeks until Christmas!! Do people have big plans? How long are your dojos/dojangs/schools closed over the holidays?

We have our Sake Ceremony on the 16th, after which the dojo will be closed and it doesn't reopen until Jan 3 probably. So that's about 2.5 weeks without karate. But I'll be back to the gym by then, so that's okay. And I'll be there A LOT!! (Got a lot of lost time to make up for!!) Sat, 4 Dec 2010 08:03:06 EST Hi! New here! Hi everyone! I hope I'm doing this's my first post ever on these boards. I just started SP this week (to lose all that weight that came from 3 pregnancies and an international adoption...and a lot of stress and eating too many sweets! ;-) )

I'm training in Tang Soo Do in the World Tang Soo Do Association, which is a Korean martial art. I started in January of this year, and have passed my orange, orange stripe, and green belt tests (green stripe test is next week). T... Fri, 3 Dec 2010 21:26:00 EST December challenge I added a nutrition challenge. I figured tis the season to over eat, so let's see if we can beat the trend!

And for our martial arts challenge, 30 minutes practicing basics. Should be a pretty easy one for everyone to meet unless you *only* do advanced classes in which case, you're on your own. ;-) Wed, 1 Dec 2010 14:53:00 EST Hello Everyone from Saskatchewan Hey there.

Just sticking my nose in to introduce myself. I started a poorly managed Tai Chi class at the age of 47, progressed from there to a different dojo two years ago, and now, at the age of 50, have found a new dojo in Winnipeg, MB to which I travel every couple of weeks.

I started over from scratch (I had received my 8th kyu/orange in Goju Kai, but the school was FAR too competitive and didn't understand that I am NOT 18 years old anymore. It didn't help that th... Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:54:03 EST Weekly check-in Nov 27 to Dec 3 Wow, folks! We're heading into the last month of 2010. Is anyone else having a hard time believing how quickly this year flew by?? I swear time speeds up the older you get!!

Well, after a REALLY good night's sleep, I'm feeling even that much better. I swear it's going to be virtually impossible not to exercise vigorously for a full two weeks. I think I will give it a week (I can probably handle that) but I honestly don't think I could stand not to do SOMETHING of a cardio type work... Sat, 27 Nov 2010 10:10:42 EST Hi there! Hi all, I'm Rona (pronounced like Donna), and I've been a Spark member for a while but don't have much luck losing weight. I'm 40-something, work full-time and married with three kiddos. Our son (10 yrs old) started Universal Kempo Karate in February and just earned his blue belt, and I finally decided to join in, along with our almost 5 yr old daughter, at the end of October. Now, if I could get our 16 yr old daughter and my hubby to join us! Oldest daughter is a cheerleader, though taking ... Tue, 23 Nov 2010 09:22:31 EST Weekly Check in - November 20 - 26 Good morning team! I thought I would start us off today in Irene's absence. I hope she is doing well in Mexico, although one of her Facebook posts is making me wonder.

I wasn't thrilled with my last class. We spent quite a bit of time on sparring drills again. My hip just doesn't like it. Sensei continuously reminds me to modify things so as not to inflame things, but I have a hard time doing that. It feels as though I'm doing it wrong and that irritates me. Sigh.
<B... Sat, 20 Nov 2010 09:15:00 EST Weekly Check-in Nov 13 to Nov 19 Jess, that's pretty young to be starting peri-menopause, but things CAN begin to go wonky (the actual medical term LOL) at least 10 years before you are actually clearly in peri-menopause. (BTW, people typically mis-label this whole phase of life: Menopause is marked by an entire year without a cycle. Everything before that is peri-menopause. The things you learn, whether you want to or not.....) You just never know how things are going to go, but my own personal experience has been that my p... Sat, 13 Nov 2010 07:49:13 EST Weekly check-in Nov 6 to Nov 12 Last night a bunch of us gals affiliated with karate got together for another girls' night out. We went to dinner at a nice place downtown. There were 9 of us all together - mostly it was loads of fun, but one of the girls invited her sister-in-law who doesn't hold her liquor very well.... She had a couple of huge glasses of wine and you could definitely tell as the evening wore on. I'm not very good with that, I've decided. It was the only down side to the whole evening. Otherwise, we had a ... Sat, 6 Nov 2010 07:14:06 EST Weekly Check-in Oct 30 to Nov 5 Wow... Coming down to the wire of 2010. Does that not just amaze others of you? I'm astounded how quickly the year has gone.

Well, not much new in my corner of the world. Adrian was feeling much better yesterday, though he stayed home from school since his head was still pounding when hubby woke him up in the morning to check on him. By last night he was feeling well enough to carve a pumpkin with the girlfriend and today he's going in to work....

I'm heading off to Com... Sat, 30 Oct 2010 08:33:37 EST Weekly Check-in Oct 23 to Oct 29 Ok, where is everybody?

I went to a women's self-defense seminar today, hosted by the Kung Fu school I checked out several weeks ago. It was run by the school owner. It was *not* a Kung Fu class by any stretch of the imagination, and it's techniques anyone could learn and do. He taught us all these techniques out on the mat, then did things like take us into a closet (he was all in sparring gear with a cage helmet) and we had to get out. Once the door was open, once the door wa... Sat, 23 Oct 2010 16:16:03 EST Hello Hi I'm a newbie. I haven't practiced Kata for sometime. Looking forward to that! Cheers! 345 Sun, 17 Oct 2010 09:58:07 EST Weekly Check-in Oct 16 to Oct 22 Peg, sorry to know you weren't able to train after all, but I totally get the frantic shopping for a (teenaged?) daughter. Gees. Mine was like that until she could drive. Even when she came home last weekend, first thing we did was to go out and get her some make-up because she had left hers at school (but, conveniently, she needed more anyway...). Of greater concern is the headache. Sorry to know that prevails.

So, the karate camp weekend started last night. I went for the second... Sat, 16 Oct 2010 08:07:54 EST Weekly Check-in Oct 9 to Oct 15 Hey all...okay, here's the new thread.

MARY: Go get 'em, girl!!! Write when you're done, though I'm sure it'll only be good news!!! Good thoughts are with you!!!

Last night at DS's football game, a young student from the dojo was there (maybe 10 or so?) and as he was walking by, said "Hi Sensei!".... I looked down to see who it was, and was surprised to see him. He was part of the half-time "entertainment". He's part of a football league in the city that takes kids in e... Sat, 9 Oct 2010 09:45:46 EST Weekly Check-in Oct 2 - Oct 8 Hey all,
Let's keep that positive thought for Mary.... GO GIRL! (And please let us know how it all went!!)
306 244 Sat, 2 Oct 2010 08:35:31 EST Weekly check-in Sept 25 - Oct 1 Hey all, back to Combat today. Went Thurs for the first time in a couple of weeks, just due to all kinds of things...and it felt SOOOO good! Back again today. LOVE IT.

Hope everyone else has a great training day, whatever form it takes.

How's Scott doing, Annette? Sat, 25 Sep 2010 07:48:35 EST Hello from British Columbia I've been on SP for a while but didn't know about this team - thanks to MIKITTA for the invite!

I'm practicing Tai Chi Chuan and Nisei Karate. I'm a brown belt with three stripes which means the next level is black belt - likely in June 2011. Our club is small so I'm getting to do a lot of teaching already which is great fun.

Looking forward to making this journey together! Wed, 22 Sep 2010 00:15:10 EST Weekly check-in Sept 18 to Sept 24 Annette, your proposed resolution to your situation sounds good.... Just to play devil's advocate...are you sure that will do it? I thought the final straw was how Tim was treated...what would your plan achieve toward resolving THAT situation? I don't want to imply that I don't think you should go forward with what you have in mind. I think your differences of opinion are resolvable. But I thought there were more issues of principle at play that you couldn't overcome. I mean, if he *listens* ... Sat, 18 Sep 2010 07:30:59 EST hello hi everyone - my name is Lisa - I am 41 - and currently a high brown in TaeKwon-Do. I started TKD after sitting in the back watching my son do class and thinking it looked like fun. My initial goal was to get a green belt and quit because I didn't want to spar. Then I decided to continue and just go to red, because I didn't want to get hit in the head...Well I just started back after taking some time off - I was really doubting my abilities and readiness to present myself for a recommended b... Fri, 17 Sep 2010 09:29:19 EST Looking to October Ok, my personal pity party is over.

I was looking at some of the other martial arts teams and they had challenges like doing a kata per week (we've done that) or team challenges of attending a certain number of class hours per week.

Any interest in either of those? Wed, 15 Sep 2010 21:14:39 EST Hiya INtroducing self. I am Jess. I take Kenpo here in St Louis. Currently I am working toward green belt. Gained a lot of weight and am working my way to a healthier lifestyle and eventually my blackbelt. Though I have put on weight I have never given up the desire to learn martial arts. Tue, 14 Sep 2010 03:52:57 EST Weekly check-in Sept 11 - 17 Ah...Annette, now I get the reasoning behind Shihan's continued search. So, no it may not have anything intrinsically to do with you, but the fact that he is soliciting your help sure sends a message. And, I repeat, it's one that contradicts Andrew's position, quite resoundingly.

Off to Combat for me, today. FINALLY!! I have been unable to do ANY exercise for a couple of weeks, due to the crazy work schedule I've had, and moving the daughter down to school. I'm going to have to wa... Sat, 11 Sep 2010 08:05:40 EST New to the group Hello!
I've just joined your group. My name is Marguerite but most people just call me Meg. I have recently started taking Tai Chi classes. I am a Cho Dan (first Dan) in Tang Soo Do, but had a mental melt down about my forms and my abilities, so took some time off and started Tai Chi classes to learn to slow down and de-stress. So far, it seems to be working. I can definitely see a correlation between Tai Chi and Tang Soo Do, so I know that it's similar to what I already have as a b... Mon, 6 Sep 2010 10:05:43 EST Weekly check-in Sept 4 to Sept 10 Mary, I suspect maybe you're doing better than you give yourself credit for, and maybe that's why Sensei passed you over without giving much more attention than to your kiyais. And I LOVE the story about becoming 'cool' with the teens. Cute. I think I have that status with some of DD's friends, but I'm not so sure with DS's friends. Not that it means a heck of a lot to me..... It's just funny.

Welcome Mik, happy to have you back among us!

No karate in the coming week. B... Sat, 4 Sep 2010 08:15:17 EST Team lead volunteer? I need someone to volunteer to be team lead for this team since it's not fair to leave the team without someone who can manage the options, and since the lead ought to be someone practicing martial arts.

You don't have to do a lot, but you do have to check in from time to time. Almost no one does the challenges, so you can probably ignore that, too, unless you have better ideas than I have.

I do want someone who will be around for the long haul, though, not someone who ... Thu, 2 Sep 2010 22:34:59 EST Hello and training for competition! Hi everyone, I'm new!

Right now I am training and teaching in WKF Shotokan karate. Recently, to the delight of my female students, I decided to re-enter the competitive world, which I have not inhabited in fourteen years.

This means that I am now training for a women's black belt division. I have planned out my gym time so that my strength and speed will be where they need to be, and I'm working the nutrition end so that I'll weigh in where I need to, but I'm a bit worri... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 19:50:57 EST Weekly check-in Aug 28 to Sept 3 Here's the new thread for this week.

Off to Combat later this morning, but this time Sensei Donna will be joining me at the gym. Yay! Will report back later...... Sat, 28 Aug 2010 09:20:50 EST Weekly check-in Aug. 21 to Aug 27 Okay - here's this week's thread started for everyone.

I did Combat class this morning - have decided I want to try to incorporate some of the great drill patterns that we do to the music in our dojo for warm-ups. I bet people would LOVE them. My next project..... Sat, 21 Aug 2010 13:06:24 EST New to group and MA I've just taken my first Tae Kwon Do class, and don't think I'll ever go back. It was the most exciting thing I have done in months. I loved it. Wed, 18 Aug 2010 23:27:31 EST
