SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard We will discuss low carb lifestyles (including Atkins,Protein Power, South Beach and other doctor-recommended low carb plans), trade low carb recipes and team up to do this together! SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard Sunday - National Hanging Out Day Sounds good to me!

It's also National Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day.

Had a busy day planned, but it's changed all of a sudden. I'm working in the church nursery this morning, and had invited some friends over to play bridge this afternoon. Something hit me suddenly this morning, though, and I had to cancel the bridge. Probably just digestive complaints from eating way too much last night. I'll do the nursery, though. We always have two people there, one paid p... Sun, 19 Apr 2015 09:25:21 EST I need help with my steaks! I do not have an outdoor grill and I usually fry in cast iron or use the oven. The problem is my steaks are too tough... need to be tenderized. I have a freezer full from butchering a cow (first time I have ever had a cow rather than a steer which is fattier and probably more tender).

I want to keep my steaks low carb. Marinating is often helpful to tenderize steak but adds calories and carbs. I tried course salt for an hour to break down the steak... but after washing it stil... Sun, 19 Apr 2015 08:18:50 EST Saturday Where is everyone? Hope you're all out enjoying the day. Sat, 18 Apr 2015 14:26:39 EST Just another regular old dinner! LOL! My mom said my dinner tonight sounded awful fancy. But when you cook real food it's really not. and it's too easy!
Of course getting to this point (cooking real food) was hard! You can't dump-boil-and just bake!

We are having
whipped organic carrots. Made with turkey broth, HWC, butter, organic cheddar cheese and bacon bits!
Almond flour onion biscuits
chiocken breasts marinated in garlic oil and tamari, wrapped in bacon with a slice of swiss cheese on top. <B... Fri, 17 Apr 2015 17:12:04 EST Friday - Blah, Blah, Blah Day! Honest! It's even a copyrighted holiday!

Today is also National Day of Silence, which is seems an odd juxtaposition until you realize that the two designations aren't what they seem. Blah, Blah, Blah Day is a day to quite procrastinating and to do the things that others have been nagging you to do. National Day of Silence is a protest against the bullying and harassment of GLBT. But I still think the names of the designations go well together.

Nothing on the calendar at ... Fri, 17 Apr 2015 08:45:47 EST National Wear Pajamas to Work Day Ohhhhhh yeahhhhhhhh. I am totally down with that. Though, honestly, my regular wardrobe is only a step above pj's anyway, so I have nothing to complain about!

Lots on my list today, so I'd better get back to it! Happy Thursday, all! Thu, 16 Apr 2015 09:32:47 EST Wednesday - April 15! And we all know what that means! Except, perhaps those from foreign (to us Yanks) lands. It's also the day the Titanic sank, many years ago. I don't think I knew that the Titanic sank on such an unpropitious day.

Woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep, so got up and did some housework. Did the daily stuff, and then cleaned out the two drawers of my nightstand. Lots of stuff in there, and now it's all sorted out and down to less than one drawer, and I know what I'll do with al... Wed, 15 Apr 2015 09:00:22 EST Seen on shelves: Level protein snack bars Level markets to diabetics, apparently a whole lifestyle/diet program of which the products are a part, promoted on the boxes as a "reduced carb program designed to fight high blood sugar & help lose weight." Nice to see! I eat the occasional Atkins bar, and these seem fairly comparable--a little less sweet and less chemical in taste (though the chemical aftertaste I expect from all such things is still present, just less prominent). Pretty similar ingredients. Can't speak to the progra... Tue, 14 Apr 2015 08:12:29 EST Tuesday - Library Workers Day! It's also International Moment of Laughter Day, Look up at the Sky Day, National Pecan Day, Reach as High as You Can Day, Poem in Your Pocket Day, Dolphin Day, Be Kind to Lawyers Day, Equal Pay Day, Ex-Spouse Day. So, which one are you going to celebrate?

I really, really, really need to just make myself go to bed. I don't know why I resist it so much, even when I'm totally groggy. But I do.

The appraiser is coming over today and I'm not ready. I'm going to have to get u... Tue, 14 Apr 2015 02:06:19 EST New to the Group - Hi! I started a low carb diet back before the holidays, steadily lost a couple of pounds every week or so without really counting anything. I mostly just cut out grains, sugar, fruit, etc... But I ate vegetables freely. Then I fell off the wagon in a major way. I sort of half assed it with getting back on plan after that. I'd do really well for a week, cheat for three days, do okay for four days, etc... The result is that my weight has since bounced up and down between the same five pounds. Getti... Mon, 13 Apr 2015 13:05:31 EST Monday - National Thomas Jefferson Day! And don't forget that he was instrumental in bringing lots of new kinds of vegetables to the US. He grew over 250 different varieties of vegetables in his garden!

Lots to do today, since I didn't get everything done yesterday. Started the day making business phone calls. I'm waiting now for a storage facility in Idaho to open so I can call them. After I get the business calls taken care of, I'll go get some blood work done. They usually schedule the blood work after the checkup, bu... Mon, 13 Apr 2015 10:52:15 EST How? Anyone read Keto Clarity and/or following the plan?

I was reading one of the success story about a woman who lost 200 pounds and she did so by eating 90% fat 8% protein & 2% carbs.

Here are my questions:
What in the world did she eat?
How do you get 90% fat in a day?
8% protein, really?
2% carbs I guess she didn't eat vegetables?

I currently get approixmately 72-76% fat, 22-26% protein & 4-6% carbs a day. I'm not losing weight so I need ... Mon, 13 Apr 2015 09:26:29 EST Thanks, and.... Thanks for the hints and encouragement. I especially feel that I need to cut back on goals and stick to that advice about low carbs, without worry about calories--for now, at least. That is where I think God is leading for now. Sun, 12 Apr 2015 14:45:05 EST Sunday - National Big Wind Day! Officially, it commemorates the strongest natural wind gust ever recorded - 231 mph at Mount Washington Observatory on April 12, 1934. Which sort of surprised me. I thought it probably had something to do with politicians!

Today is also Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day.

Lots of stuff planned to do around the house. That is, lots of 15 minute sessions. I hope to get the house back to being show ready, though I may not get quite that far. But I might. It's amazing how ... Sun, 12 Apr 2015 09:39:05 EST Newbe Started yesterday and did great till around 7:00pm, when Temptation won and I 'pigged' out on carbs. I have struggled with addiction to carbs since I was a toddler. Oh, how hard to let go! Sat, 11 Apr 2015 12:30:35 EST Saturday - National Pet Day Got to love those little furry friends!

Errands today. Have to pick up some books at the library. I took a box of old cookbooks down to the special collections library on campus, and they wanted to keep some of them. I need to pick up the rest of them and then find a new home for them. Then I'll go to the public library for Discardia. There's a group of mostly women who sew and mend, and they take their sewing machines and thread down to the library and do free mending and some alt... Sat, 11 Apr 2015 08:33:00 EST Friday - TGIF and National Siblings Day! National Siblings Day is a day to remember and appreciate your siblings. I don't know about yours, but mine got much better once they moved far away! Or maybe it was just as we grew up. I actually enjoy seeing them now, which wasn't always the case when I was a teenager.

When I was a kid, Mom used to tell my brothers to appreciate me and me to appreciate them because some day we'd be in a situation where they'd suggest that I invite one of my friends over and I'd agree, if they inv... Fri, 10 Apr 2015 10:20:40 EST MY GOOD INTENTIONS After another night of no sleep and feeling totally exhausted today, I postponed an important errand because I was too groggy to drive my car. I came up with these intentions for the rest of my tomorrows:

1 -- Stick to my paleo/low-carb eating.
2 -- Limit whey smoothies to one per day--too many carbs.
3 -- Take all my supplements.
4 -- Do my bedtime routine.
5 -- Ride my ex-bike 10 minutes three times per day.
6 -- Lift weights or something heavy. ... Thu, 9 Apr 2015 22:26:17 EST TGIF Eve Good morning, teammates!

Yes it's the eve before TGIF! Where the heck are these weeks flying to?!?!?

Quiet in my cubicle again. I'm working on a compliance task that I'm supposed to do weekly but hasn't gotten done since Thanksgiving. Yikes! I'm glad the Internal Controls department didn't choose this month to audit me! I accidentally "broke" the database I used to have set up for the task, and during that busy time of the year I had no time to find someone to fix it. I... Thu, 9 Apr 2015 10:10:08 EST Hello! Hi Everyone. I've had a weight issue almost my entire life. To my own amazement, I lost a significant amount of weight on the "old" Atkins diet back in the mid 90s but more importantly, I felt GREAT during that time! But then in 1999, I became pregnant with my last child and gained it all back and then some. I got so discouraged that 15 years later, I haven't lost another pound. I also let myself be convinced that Atkins was not healthy but over the years, I have come to realize that suga... Wed, 8 Apr 2015 11:04:08 EST Wednesday - National All Is Ours Day! Several sites said that today is National All Is Ours Day, but no one seemed to really know what it meant. A couple of suggestions were that it was a day to reflect on the beauty of nature or that it was a day for sharing, based on the "ours." I guess I'm just a basically selfish person. I read it to mean that everything is ours, and the rest of them don't get any. My "our" seems to be pretty limited!

Anyway, not much planned for the day except a tutoring session and a visit to my ... Wed, 8 Apr 2015 09:46:42 EST Tuesday - no housework day Ok, it is also national beer day, but in good conscience I had to pick an alternate topic name. Tue, 7 Apr 2015 09:41:27 EST WORD FOR THE DAY MINDFULNESS: BE WHERE YOU ARE ! ! !

Be mindful of the food I am eating today--does it taste good.
Be mindful of where I am walking--be safe.
Be mindful of my feelings--create happiness and joy. Smile at everyone I see. Think wellness, think enjoyment.
Be mindful of how long I sit at my computer or watching TV--keep moving.
Be mindful of where I put my keys! Put them in the same place every day. Mon, 6 Apr 2015 15:49:11 EST Monday - National Sorry Charlie Day! National Sorry Charlie Day has nothing to do with tuna. It's about carrying on with a smile after you've been rejected. How many times have we let a small rejection (that often wasn't even intended as such) ruin or day or kept us from doing something we wanted to do? Stop it!

One thing that bugs me is when people are afraid to ask you something because you might say no. I do a lot of volunteering, and the folks at the organizations don't ask me to help with things because they "don... Mon, 6 Apr 2015 10:51:57 EST Sunday - Happy Easter! I'm off to a slowish start for someone with one ankle in a splint and elevated most of the time. Managed a shower and shampoo, and a friend is on the way over to visit and help with a few things. My anxiety level is up for some reason - no clue why! LOL

I don't really celebrate Easter so I'm not missing any plans. I hope you all are having fun, seeing signs of Spring, and do good things for yourselves today!

And where the heck are you?? Sun, 5 Apr 2015 14:34:08 EST Quick Introduction Hi all

Thought I'd pop in and introduce myself. I am from South Africa but have been living in Ireland the last 10 years, hence the username lol

I am following the lchf woe, its taken South Africa by storm and is known as Banting. There are even restaurants opening up all over the place! Pity Ireland does not feel the same way...

I officially start tomorrow with my eating and starting gym. I will have to take the gym slow because of a knee injury but I love go... Sun, 5 Apr 2015 04:42:03 EST Jello.. Is sugar free jello with coolwhip a low carb desert? I noticed that coolwhip is low in carbs. Sat, 4 Apr 2015 20:36:37 EST Hello there Hey everyone!
My name is Jess and I am returning to Atkins. I really don't know why I stopped, it just kinda happened gradually. The day I decided to go on Atkins was January 5th 2015, this is the same day my father-in-law passed away. He lived with us and, sadly, my 12 year old son found him in his room. I decided to keep going with Atkins because he really wanted me to become healthy. I Stuck with it for over a month and I really had no problems with it - I lost 16 pounds, 3 of which I... Sat, 4 Apr 2015 13:44:05 EST Saturday - Walk Around Things Day! I need to tell them this over on the De-Cluttering Challenge Thread!

And today is also Tell a Lie Day, though you may not believe me about that.

One of the guys who installed the carpet said to let him know if I ever decide to sell my car, because he was interested. So I called him, and he and his son are coming over this afternoon to look at it. I figure I don't want to drive a 21 year old Ford Escort cross country. I don't know how to go about selling a car, so I'm wil... Sat, 4 Apr 2015 11:39:06 EST New to Low Carb! I guess I should have looked here before posting on the wall. Oh well.

I have always just watched strictly calories, and if I was PERFECT (60+ minutes of exercise and logging every bite) I would lose .5 to 1 pound a week.

I've been listening to "Cut the Fat" podcast. He kept mentioning keeping carbs low. So derrrr...I checked my carbs (I use the app "Lose It") and saw I was eating 150- well over 200 g of carbs a day! Maybe this is why I had to work so hard?
<BR... Fri, 3 Apr 2015 17:01:46 EST My First Post Here Good morning and Happy Friday everyone.

I"m super excited to be able to make my first post here a positive one. I nearly posted a few days ago when I was super frustrated with my plateau of a little over 3 weeks. I had been doing relatively low carb but still a fair bit of fruit, in smoothies and half an apple for a snack with peanut butter. Starting on Tuesday I went back to Atkins Induction - down 1.8 lbs as of this morning.

And on a super happy note I went jean... Fri, 3 Apr 2015 12:21:04 EST Good Friday It's Good Friday and it is quiet on the forum this morning ... is everyone busy?

Have a great day everyone and a Happy Easter!

Xana Fri, 3 Apr 2015 10:56:14 EST Sweetener I've been reading an article about sweeteners and what to use for hot, cold, cooking methods, etc. I'm basically interested in cooking or hot drinks (like tea). Does anyone have an opinion about monk fruit? the article sounded positive that it doesn't spike sugar and that it's natural. I found one online but dextrose is added to the monkfruit. It's confusing! Just wanted others opinions, and maybe there's a better choice. THanks! Fri, 3 Apr 2015 06:59:20 EST April De-Cluttering Challenge Is clutter still taking over your life? Join us in our De-Cluttering Challenge and take back control!

There are no rules for this challenge. Thu, 2 Apr 2015 11:34:34 EST Thursday - No Official Holidays today... Unofficially it's PB&J Day, Reconciliation Day, and Ferret Day. Take your pick!

I'm stuck at work trying to figure out how to tell my boss how I spend my week. He sent me a list of my official Task Assignments and wants a breakdown by weekly hours. Unfortunately, many of my most time-consuming tasks are:

Monthly
Quarterly
Seasonal

So I'm wracking my brain trying to standardize all the measures so I can take an average and come up with realistic numbe... Wed, 1 Apr 2015 08:44:13 EST Wednesday - April Fools' day After a very long time of not loosing I finally lost 3 pounds last week? What changed?

I was in the dollar store, and in the food section I found some packages of Sensa. I remember seeing the info-mertial a few years ago and at one dollar a package rather than ten, I thought I'd give it a try.

I've been sprinkling it on everything I eat. An odd taste, but it is so worth it. Last year at this time I tried a fat blocker with disasterous digestive results. I've had a low g... Wed, 1 Apr 2015 08:30:12 EST Interesting day I had a big physical yesterday. It was a bit of an experiment for me. I have been pretty much in Atkins phase 1 for like, six weeks. I have been eating bacon, beef, pork, salads, leafy veggies, not much cheese but, a little. I figured my cholesterol would be high and my blood work would be scary. It was really pretty great. My cholesterol is actually down. Yea, down.. He looked at my lab work and said: "Your keytones are up.?." Forgetting about what keytones are I was like: "What's t... Tue, 31 Mar 2015 11:23:22 EST Tuesday - World Back Up Day! No, we're not talking about driving in reverse. Today's the day to be sure that all of your files are backed up. (We had a client 15 years ago or so who was really pushing paperless files. Put all of your business records on their system and never have to dig through drawers and boxes of paper again! Which was fine, except that their computer system crashed and they're own stuff wasn't backed up. They thought it was, but their self-proclaimed IT guy had turned off something to make their syst... Tue, 31 Mar 2015 09:01:14 EST Yesterday was a bit of a struggle Yestarday, for the first time in more than a month, I started craving sweets bad. If there had been a Reese Easter Egg I would have eaten it. But, there wasn't and I didn't. Mon, 30 Mar 2015 09:47:39 EST Monday! Just a few minutes ago I emailed my boss at my main job and told her I could no longer work every Saturday and Sunday. I am PRN but was automatically scheduled every Saturday and Sunday. As summer approaches and DH is now off only on weekends I am no longer willing to do this. So now I can be free to work weekends at my other jobs! Yay! I wasn't going to undedicate myself but after the way they have been treating the staff with time off requests and the fact that they DENIED my bonus? No way ... Mon, 30 Mar 2015 03:24:31 EST Eating on a road trip? Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for eating on a road trip. In the past we have eaten the free breakfast buffet at the hotel, grabbed gas station sandwiches and chips at lunch and eaten in a restaurant at dinner. I know, awful food!

Now that I am low-carb, those ideas won't work. Hotel breakfast buffets are pretty much all carb, and sandwiches, chips, and most other gas station food options are out. Because we will have our pets in the car, we can't really do a rest... Sun, 29 Mar 2015 13:33:05 EST Sunday Ahhhh. I always feel so good when I get to sleep in 2 or more consecutive days.

I finally sat myself down to read an eBook I printed off from Chris Kresser's site about Thyroid Disorders. Yup, I belong in there. I've addressed a few of the issues he brings up, but I should still have detailed tests done to check my levels.

I keep putting off getting tests done (not just for thyroid but for some dental issues and other minor things as well) because I don't have the paid t... Sun, 29 Mar 2015 11:04:34 EST Saturday - Weed Appreciation Day! What's the difference between a weed and a flower and crop? Not much, except that weeds are easier to grow!

Went to the animal shelter this morning. Magic is feeling so much better! He ate a whole can of A/D, an expensive canned dog food. He refused to eat it out of the bowl, though. I tried putting some on the treats he was eating, and he licked off the A/D before eating the treat, and then licked the blanket to get every bit. I asked for something flat, and they gave me a plate. ... Sat, 28 Mar 2015 11:14:59 EST Biscuits Man these are good. I did not add honey and I added 1 tsp onion powder.

I used regular almond "flour" so at the end of chewing you have teensy bits of nuts instead of the "flaky" we think of. Just something different because we are so used to grain flour.

I "dropped" mine in the pan- no parchment because it is a pretty slippery finish.

Slather with butter- YUM!

eo-southern-biscuits.html
Fri, 27 Mar 2015 19:37:00 EST Low carbing, losing, and LOVING! Hello everyone!
I've been low carbing for about 3 weeks now, just joined Spark today. I am not following one specific plan, but somewhere in between Atkins and Paleo. Atkins because it's low carb, Paleo because I am trying to eat grass-fed, natural, and have also added sweet potatoes. No induction for me because I have a couple medical issues that prevent me. With that said, weight is falling off, clothes fitting better, and energy through the roof! Helps that I never have to be hungry ... Fri, 27 Mar 2015 15:48:01 EST Friday - A very special day! Because it's my birthday!

Today's going to be a sort of choppy day. I went to the animal shelter about 8:30 to try to get Magic to eat. He wasn't interested. I think I need to stay there longer. Came home and did a very quick tidying (thanks, FlyLady and Woubbie!) and a rep from a moving company came to get info to do an estimate. A rep from another moving company comes at 11:00. I'll go back to the shelter about 3:30 to hand out with Magic again and maybe get him to eat. Then groc... I needed this today.
And he mentions "66" days the norm to change a habit. I used to beat myself up because I couldn't do it in the "30" days everyone else suggested.
Of course this Team- the best Team on SP taught me that its different for each of us. So I am learning, stop sweating the stupid stuff, let it go and move forward!
244 Fri, 27 Mar 2015 08:06:41 EST Thursday - Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! Honest! It's true! Today really is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. I didn't make it up. I found it in two different sources.

So, I hereby declare that today is Eat a Healthy Meal Day. That's what I'm going to do today. I've hardly cooked at all since I got my house painted and have had to keep it all cleaned up and everything, and my health has definitely suffered for it. So today I am going to have at least one real meal. It will have a protein and a vegetable and a salad. That's go... Thu, 26 Mar 2015 09:25:08 EST Wednesday Feeling much better today, I'm glad to say. Have pretty much decided that I'm going to fly back to Idaho and buy a car there. Also that I'll probably have at least some of my stuff professionally packed. The kitchen stuff, a few pictures, and some knick knacks. I'll pack the non-breakables and the I'm-not-terribly-concerneds. I'll have to wait and see what they'd charge for that.

Worked at the homeless shelter this morning, will tutor later this morning, and may get my taxes done ... Wed, 25 Mar 2015 07:57:23 EST Just Tuesday I have all day training tomorrow, so I'm trying to be ultra-efficient today. Thus, "Just Tuesday". Have a great day, all! Tue, 24 Mar 2015 09:17:23 EST Monday - National Puppy Day! Guess I'll have to go to the animal shelter and do some lovin'!

Bridge this afternoon, and some errands, and lots to do getting ready to move. I'm thinking of leaving here about May 1, so I'll be home for Mother's Day. That means I have just over a month to get everything packed! Yikes! Oh well. I got everything ready to have the house painted and carpeted, and that was a Yikes! too. As was getting everything ready to show the house. I'm getting pretty good at Yikes!'s.

... Mon, 23 Mar 2015 10:01:00 EST Happy National Goof Off Day! Well the official National Day calendar says they don't know who started it, but I've found a reference to it in a 1995 online article, so it's at least 20 years old!

I am totally down with this one! Gonna go goof off right now! (World of Warcraft, I'm looking at you, babe!) Sun, 22 Mar 2015 12:34:36 EST New to the team and very excited Hi everyone, my name is Dianna and I am new to the team. I have tried every diet out there over the last year and failed on all of them. The only one I was successful at was low carb. Even that one I hit a wall after the induction period. About a month ago after speaking to my doctor he put me on low carb, but not Atkins. No sugars , breads, pasta, fruits, nothing with gluten. I am to eat a lot of meat, cheese, low carb yogurt, and a lot of green vegetables. Of course vegetables have carbs an... Sun, 22 Mar 2015 09:52:20 EST Saturday - National Common Courtesy Day! Wouldn't it be nice if every day were a common courtesy day? Or, better yet, if courtesy were actually common? Please?

Christine came over and worked in the yard for a couple of hours. Just basic spring cleaning out there. Then I went to the library for the reading to the dogs program. Kids just love it! We get regulars who want to read to all of the dogs and who will sit quietly and wait their turns, even it takes over an hour to get to all of them. Then home. I may do some more w... Sat, 21 Mar 2015 13:08:28 EST It's sold! I got an offer on my house this afternoon! It was about 3% less than I asked for (that's including what they wanted me to pay for their closing costs), so I countered with splitting the difference. And they accepted! It's not final and finished and all that - there's still the inspection and appraisal and all - but it's definitely getting close. Their offer says that it's supposed to close on or before May 11. I guess I'd better get cracking on the packing! Fri, 20 Mar 2015 22:23:57 EST Friday - TGIF! What, no daily thread yet?? Maw?! Woubbie?! Anyone?

I'm at my desk at work - not thrilled to be here, but I'm okay. Still reeling from the behavior of coworkers I trusted, but I'm moving past it. No work at the range tonight, so I am going shoe shopping! I'm several years overdue for new shoes. I'm also buying new muffin tins (probably another stop at Bed Bath & Beyond) because the tins I'm using for my egg muffin breakfasts are really old, tired, and gross.

What'... Fri, 20 Mar 2015 13:06:32 EST Luna's LCHF progress thread Something some of the students at my university do is to create a progress thread and update it daily with how things are going.

So here goes!

Yesterday I didn't stay awake but for like two hours so I didn't eat. Been up 9 hours now and still not hungry but I did eat a small bowl of beef stew I made for DH. In fact I made enough food for the next four days! I didn't plan on it but it just kinda happened. Made recipes from Dana carpenters fat fast book. Gonna add meat as... Fri, 20 Mar 2015 10:16:03 EST High protein, LC and LF foods? I've come to realize that while the scale has gone down, I've lost some strength in the process. That's partly because I don't exercise much, and I'm also not eating enough protein to maintain lean muscle mass. So I need to eat some more protein too.

But the problem is, other than meat, it is tough to find LC and LF sources of protein. Whey powder is almost all protein unless they add sugar to it. That's good, but spendy. I just bought some and will see how it goes.

... Fri, 20 Mar 2015 06:19:28 EST Thursday - Absolutely Incredible Kid Day! Hadn't intended to be here, but they only had one person signed up for this shift, and they need at least two and at least one male and at least one female. Thu, 19 Mar 2015 02:19:12 EST Sweeteners- not so sweet :o( I have been off sugar and "sweeteners" of all kinds for so long. Sure I drink the once in a while diet pepsi, or sprinkle a sweet and low packet on something once in a blue moon.

But for the last 2 years I have been craving a chocolate chip cookie. I've have been too lazy to attempt an LC/HF version. I eat unsweetened coconut flakes when I crave a sweets. Maybe better luck with the showing this morning.

I was scheduled to work at the homeless shelter this morning from 3 - 6 and from 6 - 8. Mon, 2 Mar 2015 10:17:03 EST Idita-Walk March Challenge You've heard of the Iditarod? The Alaskan dog sled race? They go 1049 miles across the snow and ice.

We're doing the Idita-Walk, which doesn't involve dogs or sleds. Either exercise (walk, swim, whatever) for 1049 minutes during February and March, or do some version of distance, based on the 1049 miles of the Iditarod. For example, I'm going to walk at least 104.9 miles over the two month period.

Woubbie and I started the first of February, but you can start now. Ther... Sun, 1 Mar 2015 11:18:07 EST Sunday - National Pig Day Ya gotta love those critters who give us bacon! I used to buy my pork from a local farmer who said that his pigs had a wonderful life and only one bad day. He was picky about who did the butchering, to make sure they did it humanely, and even picky about how his animals got to the butcher. They weren't thrilled about the ride, but he found some way to get them there with minimal stress.

On the other hand, one of our local TV stations had a segment on how pigs are raised commerciall... Sun, 1 Mar 2015 10:30:03 EST Saturday - and February Is Over! Well, it will be at the end of the day. It's been quite a month and seemed awfully long while we were in it, but now it seems like "where did it go?" Here's hoping that March will be better, at least weather-wise.

It's also Public Sleeping Day. Personally, I prefer to do my sleeping at home, but whatever. Thu, 26 Feb 2015 10:44:43 EST Spark People tracking and low carb It looks like to me that the Sparkpeople trackers are for low fat diets only. Is that true or can I modify my tracker for low carb? Wed, 25 Feb 2015 20:17:33 EST I'm new to this group, but not to low-carb dieting Hello! I'm tired of being obese. This time I'm determined to lose weight and the only thing that functioned for me in the past is the low-carb dieting, little or non-starch. I need a group to help me in having consistency. I love eating natural unprocessed foods, so that part is not difficult to me, but to cope with stress.
I hope we all get our goals! Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:15:52 EST Wednesday Today is National Chocolate Covered Nut Day and National Clam Chowder Day. Either or both of which we can celebrate as low carbers!

Nuts, as we all know, are good for us (watch the cashews, though - they're higher carb than most), as is dark chocolate. Try melting an good dark chocolate and mixing it with almonds or pecans or walnuts. Yummm!

And you can make either New England clam chowder (the white kind) low carb by using cauliflower instead of potatoes and using heav... Wed, 25 Feb 2015 09:11:54 EST One of the things I have learned about low carb. A couple of years ago I low carbed and it didn't go well. The constipation was awful. This time I am keeping the cheese consumption way down. I don't even buy cheese at the grocery store. Granted, it's low in carbs but, it makes the life style unbearable for me. I do get cheese in some meals. Like the Adkins chili, which I really like. Or I'll get it on a Subway chopped salad, which is basically two slices of cheese sliced in half.

The first time I ever did low carb it wor... Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:01:22 EST Tuesday - Spay Day USA I like that better than National Tortilla Chip Day. (Jeez, so many "Days" for carby junk food!) Created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1994 as a day to bring attention to the pet overpopulation problem in the United States. Good idea!

Another cold but sunny day, weatherwise. Another anxiety-ridden "Kyle won't go to school" day for me. I'm going to try to get him up at 9:30 so he can get to school by 10 and at least get his feet back in the door. (Last Monday - off for Presidents... Tue, 24 Feb 2015 08:31:49 EST Also, back to low carbing...LOL.. It cracks me up to see that I'm not the only one coming back to low carb to lose weight. Lord knows I've tried other diets. The only one that works for me is low carb. It's funny that my wife had zero success with low carb. I had awesome success with it. So, I'm back on low carb and it's been 9 days and success so far.

My wife lost a lot of weight on Nutrasystem so, that's what she's doing. I tried it and in like six months I lost ten pounds. Miserable. In that same time ... Mon, 23 Feb 2015 07:56:41 EST Advice on my meal plan, please. Hi Everyone,

I am pushing the reset button after getting into sweets and carbs for a week. I wanted advice on my meal plan. Honestly I haven't read too much about eating low carb (I got through one paleo book) so I want to make sure I am covering my bases. I aim for 30-50 total carbs a day because my energy levels are good in that range. I still don't quite understand the net carb thing. My meal plan has 1200 calories a day. I am close to my goal weight and can loose 1-2 pounds a m... Sun, 22 Feb 2015 14:19:40 EST Double post Double posted the Sunday thread. Go read Maw's. Sun, 22 Feb 2015 08:49:29 EST Sunday - World Thinking Day! Wow! We have lots of choices for today. It's George Washington's birthday. It's Be Humble Day.(I'll refrain from the snarky comments.) It's Walking the Dog Day. (Go for, all you dog owners!) But my choice is International World Thinking Day.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone - especially world leaders and people who make policy - were humble and were thinking today? Does anyone drink this? I bought Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond coconut milk and it's very low in everything except fat... so is that why you drink it, for the fat? This is unsweetened with 1 gm carb. It's pretty bland!! Being on a LCHF diet, is this a good choice? I was surprised to see only 1 gram of protein ! Sat, 21 Feb 2015 09:22:59 EST Friday - Love Your Pet Day! Especially these bitterly cold days. I hope no one has been leaving their pets outside. Or at least, if they have to be outside, that they have a really warm place to stay. (We once had a doghouse with not just wall to wall carpet, but floor to ceiling carpet, too! And a Van Gogh on the wall, a la Snoopy. No pool table, though, poor puppy. What a deprived life he lived.)

The painting is almost all done now. I have been on the Adkins diet now for about 6 months, and I have yet to lose and keep off any weight. I have had some really good loses (30 lbs) and without any caloric increases, carb increases, or other dietary changes, I've had the same dramatic increases (30 lbs.)

Right now I weigh in at 297.6 lbs. When I started the Adkins diet, I was 307 lbs. I cannot express in words how tired and how done I am with being 300 lbs.... Thu, 19 Feb 2015 12:12:34 EST Thursday - Happy New Year! Today is the Chinese New Year. It's now the Year of the Sheep!

I still have water dripping out of each of my faucets, so I think I managed to survive the bitter cold all right. After 2 weeks without a loss, I started weighing and tracking everything I ate. I found out I wasn't eating enough fat! So, I made some cocoa/coconut oil candy - and I eat that in the evening if I haven't reached my fat intake for the day - and guess what? I have had 2 days with a loss. Go figure. Thu, 19 Feb 2015 06:45:10 EST Wednesday - Brrrrrrr! Don't know what it's like where you live, but it is COLD around here, and supposed to get worse! I'm glad I get to stay inside all day, though I special ordered some fruit for the food pantry. Cantaloupe are on sale and they were out when I was at the store last week. I'll give the store a call and see if we can work something out, because I am NOT going out!

Things are moving along nicely with the house. I definitely prefer my white walls and light carpet and flooring to the more ... Wed, 18 Feb 2015 06:21:39 EST Tuesday - Random Acts of Kindness Day! Which, like Thanksgiving Day, should be something we do every day!

Stanley Steamer came over yesterday and pulled back the wet carpet and took out the wet carpet pad and left three very noisy fans and a huge de-humidifier. They're supposed to get rid of all of the moisture in the house. A contractor came out and fixed the pipe. The carpet guy is coming today, I hope to put down new carpet pad and put the carpet back. Stanley Steamer is supposed to come today and take away the fans ... Tue, 17 Feb 2015 08:34:07 EST Guilt I'm full of it. I got coerced into lunch with s friend at Saffron, an Indian restaurant. I had a Thali platter 29 I only had a couple tablespoons of dahl. Wouldn't you know it, the raita had pineapple. I hd 3/4 of a piece of roti and a half cup of jasmine rice. I'm so ashamed 234 and now I feel horrible. After logging as best I could, I came up with 69 carbs and only 3 fiber.

Afterward, I stopped and bought Lousiana Hot Links for Fat Tuesday tomorrow, choriz... Mon, 16 Feb 2015 19:24:36 EST back to low carbing I was all the way to goal on atkins and stayed there for a few years, the my fiancée left me, so I ate and ate. I am now settled and married a wonderful guy last year, but still not eating right, my honey likes to go out a lot, eats anything, and stays slim, but I can't . Carbs also trigger binges especially when I am alone, so I need a strict induction and then still no flour or sugar. Mon, 16 Feb 2015 18:11:51 EST Monday - National Do A Grouch A Favor Day I wonder how many of us will (or at least should!) have someone do us a favor today?

I'm in limbo at the moment. The painter was supposed to start with the laundry room, kitchen and living room today, but those are the rooms with the water damage. The other rooms aren't cleared out and ready for him.

I called my insurance company first thing this morning, and was told that the carpet guys should have a water mitigation team come out and check for damage everywhere - wal... So, the purpose of low carb is to make your body start burning fat for fuel (Ketosis) instead of sugar, right? If so, does anyone test for the presence of ketones to indicate that fat is being burned?

I understand that the urine testers are only good for about 2 weeks, until your body adapts to the new eating regime. After that you need to test for the presence of ketones in blood (expensive test strips) or in breath(initial higher cost, but no strips to buy afterwards).
<B... Hi there,

I recently met with a doc that recommended a ketosis diet, just having protein and veg. Definitely not something I've done before, or at least not that restricted. I guess the hope is to kick start the weight loss and then reintroduce other foods as I get accustomed to eating less. We didn't really talk about that but I'm thinking that's the plan since I doubt nothing but meat and vegetables is something I can keep up forever! So I thought I would see what others were exp... This plan sets the first 8 weeks at 5 gr per meal, and warns you to eat every 5 hours to prevent glucogen release by the liver. It gave some information specific to diabetes and carbs, timing and amounts, that I didn't know ... I don't mean to be gross, but I'm having trouble going to the bathroom. I'm drinking more than enough water, I keep my carbs around the 20 allowed for induction, and that's mainly from veggies. Thanks Sat, 17 Jan 2015 09:36:08 EST Artificial sweeteners--is it really just cheating? Per Atkins, we take the total carbs and subtract out fiber and sugar alcohols. That's how the 20g of carbs in the bars come out to 3 net carbs. Most of it is sugar alcohol. Its not supposed to raise blood sugar so it is 'Atkins OK'.

Hmmm.

But I've seen a ton of debate over Stevia and Splenda, which is better, don't use either, etc. And a lot of sugar-free stuff uses xylitol and other sugar alcohols to give that sweetness that would be missing without adding sugar. <B...
