SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard LCHF foods when feeling nauseous I contracted a stomach virus Monday morning and am still unable to stand eating much at all. Sat, 24 Jan 2015 09:45:15 EST Saturday - National Compliment Day! So how about everyone give themselves a compliment? A sincere, honest compliment. Like "MAW, you have great hair! You are so lucky that it has enough curl and body that you don't have to fuss with it." Or "You sure showed the doctors, MAW! They both said you needed to have your knee replaced a year and a half ago, and you're still going strong with your own two knees. Way to go!" Or whatever. If you want to compliment your family, that's great, too, but let's start with ourselves. OK?
<... Hi, has anyone tried this version of low carb? It's low carb, in phases of 8 weeks instead of 2 weeks, and you can repeat phases as needed or wanted. I am using low carb to keep my blood sugars in check and I was still failing even on 15 grams of carbs (1 serving) a meal. This plan sets the first 8 weeks at 5 gr per meal, and warns you to eat every 5 hours to prevent glucogen release by the liver. It gave some information specific to diabetes and carbs, timing and amounts, that I didn't know ... I've noticed that lately I can't seem to get warm, and I'm so tired. I just want to crank up the heat, and snuggle under a pile of blankets, and sleep. I don't mean to be gross, but I'm having trouble going to the bathroom. I'm drinking more than enough water, I keep my carbs around the 20 allowed for induction, and that's mainly from veggies. I've been having to take a laxative every other day just to be able to go a small amount. Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do? I hate feeling this way. :-( Mon, 19 Jan 2015 12:50:10 EST Where's Marcia? Anyone know where Marcia is? I miss her! It would be interesting to know the genealogy of a recipe. I wonder how many of them started out as "regular" recipes, were changed to low carb back in the 60, to low fat in the 70s, maybe to regular, back t... Thanks Sat, 17 Jan 2015 09:36:08 EST Artificial sweeteners--is it really just cheating? Per Atkins, we take the total carbs and subtract out fiber and sugar alcohols. That's how the 20g of carbs in the bars come out to 3 net carbs. Most of it is sugar alcohol. Its not supposed to raise blood sugar so it is 'Atkins OK'.

Hmmm.

But I've seen a ton of debate over Stevia and Splenda, which is better, don't use either, etc. And a lot of sugar-free stuff uses xylitol and other sugar alcohols to give that sweetness that would be missing without adding sugar. <B... Sat, 17 Jan 2015 08:15:38 EST Saturday - Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day! But that's ok. Because just as we know that low carb is a way of eating for the rest of our lives, we know that resolutions should be changes to our way of living for the long term, too, not just for the short term. Right?

I'll be at the library this morning, helping with the ARF program. I started Monday and so far my blood sugar is better (which is great) and my energy level is up (which I'm happy about) but the weight loss just hasn't happened. Thu, 8 Jan 2015 17:19:10 EST Thursday I got up "early" and got dressed right away so I could take the dog for a walk before I take my shower. Got out on to the patio, with the dog in front of my, and saw that her back legs were splaying out behind her. Carefully felt with my foot and yep, the patio had a very thin slick of ice. It's really foggy out, and just at 30 degrees, and apparently that makes for freezing fog. Decided we'd go for a walk later, after the skim of ice has a chance to melt. Probably wouldn't be a problem, but ... Thu, 8 Jan 2015 11:21:50 EST New Here Last year I lost 86 lbs and took the holidays off. My body stayed pretty much at the same weight (give or take 2-4 lbs up and down) and I told myself that I would begin to drop the last of it starting the first. Here it is the 7th and I just went out today and bought the foods necessary for this. Tue, 6 Jan 2015 20:29:27 EST Back on the Wagon Hi,
After a bad period of not taking care of my eating habits and my diabetes my A1C was 8.2, and I gave myself some neuropathy, and decided I -had- to get back on the wagon. I eat a 60/20/20 diet, that's what seems to work best for me (60 percent fat, the rest protein 20 and carbs 20 percent). That ends up being about 75 g of net carbs and I'm losing weight on it. Not sure why, since it's so high, but I am heavy and I exercise a lot, despite fibromyalgia. It helps keeps my body supple ... Tue, 9 Dec 2014 09:19:38 EST Hiatal Hernia and Low Carb Hi everyone, after doing research online, books, etc., I am strongly considering switching my diet to low carb to lose weight and get my health back. I have a hiatal hernia and it is getting to the place where I have hard time breathing. I believe weight loss in general will help, but I've read that eliminating gluten can also help with digestion issues. Has anyone here had this condition and noticed an improvement after switching to a low carb diet?

Sandy Mon, 8 Dec 2014 18:50:17 EST Monday C'mon, folks, what are we all doing today?

Me? All is low carb except for the spuds.

Kris, how's your mother doing?

Have a great day, everyone! Sat, 6 Dec 2014 08:33:17 EST New to LCHF HI everybody. Good morning, and happy Friday!! I'm Interested to know for any of you who've been doing low carb for a while/years, etc., how many grams of carbs do you try to stay around? Not talking an induction or anything, but what is your lifestyle like now in grams of carbs per day? Also... if you happen to go over that, (like quite a bit) can your body feel it? It seems yesterday, I must have been way over (not tracking this day) and the next day, I just felt sooo sluggish, stomach ached, headached, ... Fri, 14 Nov 2014 08:17:38 EST Recipes that contain flax meal I bought some flax meal yesterday bc I hear a lot of people on low carb use it. Now just needing recipes that contain it. Also have some pork broth and chicken broth that I made a few days ago. I plan to make chicken soup (chicken, broth, carrots, onion, celery) and can that, too. Need to check how many jars I have left, though I can can the soup in quarts if needed.

Bridge this afternoon, then possibly a shift at the homeless shelter tonight. Sun, 9 Nov 2014 10:28:45 EST Sharing my FB page... Check out my spark blog "Simply Low Carb" recipes. Some people were asking me about induction and OWL so I decided it was easier to share. Sun, 9 Nov 2014 08:11:32 EST Sunday The cat room still reeks of bleach. No way I can coop a cat up in there. And Handsome started to squat in the corner of my closet. I'm ashamed to have to say that but it's true. Eleven years ago lost 30 lbs for my daughter's wedding thru Atkins -- it worked like a charm! Then, in 2010-11 timeframe, found SP and went low carb - no specific plan - and lost 40 (30 that I had gained back + 10). Wanted to lose more but at least I maintained for about 2 years. Then hubby had a stroke and my emotions went crazy - gained back 10, then 20 -- than another stoke this year and the additional 20 found me.

Last night... Sun, 2 Nov 2014 15:44:06 EST Newbie :) Hello all :) I'm new(ish) to the low carb way of life. I went on a low carb diet before back in my late teens/early 20's. I dropped a bunch but only lived off bunless burgers and turkey roll ups. I gained almost 100 pounds over the years by eating horribly, shocking huh? So here I am back to the low carb lifestyle and hoping I can find some great recipes and different ideas of what to make to eat. I'd like to stay on phase 1 of Atkins as long as I can since I do have so much to lose. Any help... Sun, 2 Nov 2014 12:37:40 EST New to this Forum Hi All. I started last saturday and haven't lost a thing. I am in ketosis as per my strips, and I have tested at various times of the day to ensure it wasn't just dehydration. I was on this diet about 15 yrs ago and I remember having very fast results and it was encouraging. But does anyone know about Metbolic resistance? I have been battling with my weight for over 25 years. I lose and then I regain, I have probably lost and gained the same hundred pounds about 20 times. I have heard about low carb but it always seemed really difficult to do. I started it about one week ago and I am struggling! Wed, 29 Oct 2014 17:05:38 EST So happy to find this team and support Hi, I am new to this team, I admit I have been on SP for some time but have not been consistent. I have been on the Atkins diet before and lost 30 pounds but went back to old habits and regained that plus some more over the past 14 years. I was looking at bariatric surgery and decided that since this worked before I would give it a shot before doing something drastic. I restarted atkins on October 25 and I am down 2 lbs. I know the first week is the hardest and I am trying to stay away from t... Wed, 29 Oct 2014 13:58:18 EST Wednesday Morning! I guess I'm the early bird here, most days!!
So happy the cat had a good glucose yesterday, hoping for the same today. Getting an afternoon reading, then we're on our own until Monday, as vet is out of town until then. I do have two vets numbers as back up and ours is going to call and check on us. Wed, 29 Oct 2014 08:54:51 EST Tuesday Morning!

Found out Walmart gave us the wrong insulin for our cat. Whether the vet told them the wrong kind or Walmart messed up, who knows. Anyway, vet had me bring my insulin in and peeled off the label and read the type and realized it was the right Brand, wrong ingredient. The one I bought cost under $30, the one I needed cost $200. Sigh. At least it will last a long time. So I bought the correct one from a different pharmacy (a locally owned one that the vet recommended) ... I'm a longtime spark member, but haven't been active in ages! I am doing Atkins lifestyle. I completed 3 weeks of induction, and have now started with the ongoing weight loss. I have plenty to lose, but I wanted to shift to the slower loss rate, and be happier eating a wider variety of foods. I will stick with the plan as far as adding back carbs at a measured rate. I came back here because I really like the people that hang out on spark!. I'm a 57 & 11/12 yo father of 3, grandfather of 5 and... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 21:52:14 EST Sunday Woke up and my diabetic cat has hypoglycemia. Vet is out of town and it's a small town so there are no emergency vets like there were where we used to live. I called and left a voice mail. I put maple syrup on his gums (keep trying that every so often) to try to raise his glucose. It hurts to see him like this! I knew he wasn't feeling so good yesterday! Just wasn't quite himself and then this happened during the night. Sun, 26 Oct 2014 08:33:58 EST Am new here Hi My name is Busara and I am here trying to train my body to eat better and generally get healthy. Then it occurred to me that I started using the humidifier at about the same time I started handling the kittens a lot (per Virgil's instructions) and that maybe there are nasties in the humidifier that are coming out and causing problems. So this morning I ga... I decided not to try to look it up online because right now I don't trust whatever I find due to the craziness related with eating low carb (i.e. they think low carb is 200g NC a day!!!)

If I am going to be doing T25 or some other HIIT... Do I need to up my carbs? I know my body will be in ketosis and thus burning fat for energy but I wonder if I need to shift when I eat my carbs in order to keep from needing to up them. ... I've done Spark People before and had some success with it. And I've done Atkins before and had good success with it. My problem is continuing what I start - it just seems to be a problem for me. I got rid of 10 lbs earlier in the year with Atkins, and have kept it off. I want to get rid of another 10 lbs and work to keep it off. I really look forward to meeting you folks and getting to know you! Hope you have a great day.
Carol Tue, 14 Oct 2014 12:01:00 EST Bulletproof Coffee, High Fat Percent, and Nutritio I was looking up a recipe for Bulletproof Coffee, thinking I would modify to make Bullet-Resistant Tea, and saw a post on Three Reasons Not To Drink Bulletproof Coffee. (No, I am not criticizing anyone who does!) I don't remember one of the reasons, but the other two make sense to me.

First, while saturated fats are not the enemy, BPC seems to be anywhere from 2 to about 10 tablespoons of fat - butter, coconut oil, or MCT fat, whatever that is. My name is Laurie, I'm 53 and really tired of battling my weight. I recently lost 30 lbs but fell off plan and have since gained 10 back.So I decided to take back control before it gets more out of hand. I still have at least 40 lbs to lose. I know I can't do this alone. This looks like a great group and I believe I will find support here as well as motivation for those times I might feel like giving up. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone and making some new frien... I figured that I would buy them and see how long they could go without being eaten and every day that they are NOT eaten I will give myself $1 towards a reward. I might do that with a Reese's, too. There is something I am wanting to buy but have not been able to bring myself to purchase... so that would be a good incentive to not eat them!

In fact... I have an idea for an entirely new reward system!! Time to... Sun, 12 Oct 2014 03:43:27 EST What's Your Food Budget? October Challenge I guess I forgot to start this thread this month, probably because my budget is on the Food Stamp Challenge thread. It's $120 for the month, including $5 for the first two meals I ate out (a breakfast one day and a lunch the next) and $3 for each meal I eat out after those two.

How about the rest of you? How are your food budgets coming? Sat, 11 Oct 2014 21:13:48 EST Saturday Got up early to get the heating thing for the kittens and folks looked like I was nuts when I asked for it. They'd never heard of it at PetSmart or Rural King. The little family owned pet store here knew what I was talking about but didn't have any in. So I ordered it online. It won't come until Monday, though. So for today I put boiling water in a quart canning jar and sealed it tightly (I hope!) and wrapped it in a towel. One of the kittens is sprawled on top of it sound asleep.

... Sat, 11 Oct 2014 11:20:41 EST Shirataki Either noodles, dumplings, or rice work for me. It has very low carbs, very low calories, does not use actual animal milk and it tastes good.

I am using the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze brand simply because that is what is readily available near me, at Alde, Walmart and Food Lion. Wed, 8 Oct 2014 22:39:06 EST Keto and Intermittent Fasting I finally got my Keto test strips. I am in Ketosis!! The indicator came out as dark as it could. I feel great. I have consistently lost each day for the past 7 days.

I have also began Intermittent Fasting. I decided to skip dinner instead of breakfast. So I eat my Breakfast around 8 and my "Linner" (Lunch/Dinner) at 1:30 - 2. No eating after 3pm. That seems to be working so far.

Down 5.8 pounds in 7 days. Wed, 8 Oct 2014 08:16:19 EST Wednesday Good morning! I wanted to sleep a bit longer but am taking three of the pets to the vet at 9. Senior dog is going for a check up on how she is doing on her heart meds, DD's dog is getting her bordatella and having her nails clipped, and my senior cat is getting her yearly shots. And since I had to feed the crew and get myself fed and showered and still have time for a leisurely cup of coffee I had to get up earlier than I wanted!

So the cats and dogs are fed, dogs have been outs... Wed, 8 Oct 2014 07:59:44 EST New! Hello! I've been low carb for over three weeks now. It was a result of a weekend where my sugar was 474 and then crashed to 79 and the next morning back up to 450. I decided after 17 years of being diabetic and 7 years of being on a huge load of insulin to make changes. I initially aimed for 18-20 carbs but now I am target 25-50 because I eat small amounts of fruit. My sugar has really great readings although my biggest problem now is trying to adjust the insulin compared to what I'm eat... Well 2 weeks ago I decided to have bread! That was the turning point. Within 2 weeks I put on 6 lbs. I do not encourage this type of behavior for anyone but now I know what my "Hot" food item is..
