SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard We will discuss low carb lifestyles (including Atkins,Protein Power, South Beach and other doctor-recommended low carb plans), trade low carb recipes and team up to do this together! SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard Thursday Rats! I'm in a-fib this morning. Don't know why. Can't think of anything that might have triggered it. Oh, well. That's how it usually happens for me. It just suddenly appears. Fortunately, I don't have the problems with it that Jeanne and Debb have. I take a pill to keep my heart rate from sky rocketing and just wait it out. It usually straightens itself out in half an hour or so. In the meantime, I take things really easy until it does. So I guess I'll have a lazy morning, at least.
<... Thu, 19 Oct 2017 10:17:29 EST What about Wednesday? LOL I actually had to pull up a calendar to confirm it was Wednesday and no thread had been made!

Hope you guys are doing well today! I am still feeling reactive (probably from eating out this weekend) so I hope it gets out of my system soon.... I have bone broth in the crockpot, but I think I put too much cayenne in it last night... will try it again in a few min on break.

it's still chilly here, which is soooo nice! Mid 70's for a high today! I'm loving it.
... Wed, 18 Oct 2017 11:33:07 EST Terrific Tuesday! High today is supposed to be 72! Two more days in the 70s then highs in the 50s for a few days. Average high of 66. Seems like it's been either 10 degrees or so above normal or 10 degrees or so below normal most of the month. Of course, that ends up being a "normal" month! High of only 49 on Halloween, but at least it's not supposed to rain or snow. So far.

I need to take the time to get out and clean up my yard while the weather is so good. And walk Mom's dog. Mine, too, of cours... Tue, 17 Oct 2017 10:21:18 EST Monday Just got back from walking Russell. To tired to think of alliteration.

Midterm today in Japanese. I am woefully unprepared. Need to go study. Mon, 16 Oct 2017 12:02:17 EST Happy Sunday! It's pleasantly, unseasonably warm here again, so I guess I'll go clean my porch and flower beds! Have a wonderful day, all! Sun, 15 Oct 2017 10:48:12 EST Spiffy Saturday No particular reason. I was just trying to think of adjectives that start with S and came up with that one. It certainly doesn't apply to me today! How about you? Is there a Spiffy Saturday in store for you?

I felt lots better when I got up, but almost an hour of coughing up gunk has worn me out. Waking up feeling good and energetic is encouraging, though.

Need to go to the library today, and take some tomatoes over to Mom. Will make a quick trip to Winco on the way. Tha... Sat, 14 Oct 2017 09:56:48 EST Friday - is this a conspiracy? Friday's thread seems to belong to me these days. I know you're all out there, I've seen you posting elsewhere. Fri, 13 Oct 2017 12:32:36 EST I'm an idiot I have been doing so well and then....BOOM. I forgot my lunch today. I am going to be here for 16 hour, so I have to eat. My only choices at the café were fried fish and chips, chicken parm, or turkey/cranberry wraps. I chose the wrap, but took the tortilla off. I am so ashamed of myself.... Fri, 13 Oct 2017 12:23:28 EST Thwarting on Thursday Who, or what, is thwarting your efforts today? Is it you? I'm usually the one thwarting my efforts to do whatever. I really need to get out of my own way!

I'm glad I made the effort to go to class yesterday, even if I did spend most of it sucking on cough drops. Turns out our midterm in Monday and I didn't even know it! No if I can only get all this cotton wool out of my head before them and give my brains room to get back in...

I'm just about through my second batch of ... Thu, 12 Oct 2017 09:38:10 EST Let's Talk About Slip-Ups I sometimes I feel like I'm the only LC team member that suffers from slip ups and falls back into old habits just to dust myself off and move forward again. I can't be the only one? I think there is something to be learned by seeing that this journey may not be perfect but what is important sometimes is not throwing in the towel......

I've been in slip up mode with sugar and desserts since the end of August. This is the second time in nearly 2 years that I've fallen victim to t... Wed, 11 Oct 2017 18:22:31 EST Wishful Wednesday So, what are your wishing for today? Not the big stuff like world peace or an end to the wildfires or whatever your political leanings, but more personal wishes. Come on, you've got to have some wishes and dreams! If you never have a dream then how you gonna have a dream come true? Same with wishes.

Mine's not very exciting. I wish were over this crud. Or at least had some energy. But that will come. Might take a few weeks, but I know it will come. It always does.

Study... Wed, 11 Oct 2017 10:20:59 EST Tuesday I thought about switching to flannel sheets when I changed my sheets on Sunday, but I'm glad I didn't. High today of 68, then back down into the 40s and 50s. Didn't look at the lows, but I assume they're are commensurate with the highs. I did go ahead and make the blankets into the beds (which sounds kind of funny but I'm not sure how else to put it) instead of just leaving them on top so I can take them off.

I'll go take last Wednesday's quiz this morning, but that's all I have pl... Tue, 10 Oct 2017 10:09:45 EST What will you do to avoid the Halloween Temptation Curious to hear what others will be doing to avoid temptation to indulge your sweet tooth during the holiday? Mon, 9 Oct 2017 15:30:10 EST Monday Another beautiful day here. High of 58, sunny, blue skies, light wind. It's nice to have it cool enough that I can open the windows and flood the house with sunlight! And warm enough that I can still open my bedroom window at night. This is perfect weather, as far as I'm concerned.

I picked a lot of green tomatoes before the first (and only, so far) frost last week. I spread some of them out on my dining room table yesterday - the ones that have at least started to change color. I'... Mon, 9 Oct 2017 10:09:46 EST Sunday The sun is shining, the wind is blowing, and a high of 52 today. A nice day - especially for staying inside and looking outside!

Haven't decided about going over to Mom's to clean her driveway. I think I'll pass, or maybe go later in the day when it's warmer. I definitely have a cold and I'd rather stay inside and drink my green tea with lemon juice and splenda. And I really don't want to give Mom my cold. She seldom leaves the house so isn't exposed to a lot of germs.

L... Sun, 8 Oct 2017 11:39:54 EST Super Saturday Good morning! I woke up at 5:45 and couldn’t go back to sleep, so did a Classical Stretch DVD which exhausted my leg muscles but felt good. Made a LC pumpkin smoothie for breakfast, now I’m watching Lucky Dog and then meeting DD, her fiancé and dog for engagement pictures that DH is doing. Lots of other things on my to do list, hoping I make good progress today.

Enjoy your Saturday!
Sat, 7 Oct 2017 10:13:42 EST Friday - were you waiting for me? I see this is the second week in a row nobody started a Friday thread before me. What, you all too focused on the weekend? Fri, 6 Oct 2017 16:15:51 EST Thursday Hope it's a good one! Thu, 5 Oct 2017 10:44:09 EST October food budget challenge How's your food budget going? Mine's going out of control! Or, rather, my budget isn't, but my spending is.

I'm not really concentrating on a specific budget this month, but I WILL be tracking what I spend. It's only the 4th and I've already spent about $75, but all on "good" stuff - on-plan stuff.

Chickens are 77 cents a pound for whole chickens and for thighs and for drumsticks, so I stocked up. Two whole chickens, over 6 pounds each (sort of mini-turkeys!), and four... Wed, 4 Oct 2017 14:02:47 EST Wet Wednesday Woke up to rain this morning. Russell did NOT want to go out, but I insisted.

Off to view cemetery plots this morning. Not sure how much choice they will have, since they are the free plots for the county indigent burials. Fortunately it's supposed to be nice on Friday for the burial.

Japanese class this afternoon, and I hope I can make it. My teacher has been wonderful about the whole issue with my refugee family. I took the test yesterday morning instead of Monday afte... Wed, 4 Oct 2017 10:06:47 EST Whoopie Wednesday! Wed, 4 Oct 2017 09:12:32 EST Request to join the team Hi. I would like to join your team. I am a busy mom to a teenage son and 2 very lazy cats. I work in a hospital and keep crazy hours. My Cardiologist recommended the Atkins Program and I can use any support you are willing to give. Thanks for listening Tue, 3 Oct 2017 13:20:52 EST Tipsy Tuesday! Just for FUN! LOL~! I got out of bed and danced! Why??? Because it's FUN! I laughed, and bounced through my house without music! Yyyiiipppppeeeee!!! I get to do all of this AGAIN!!!
YYyiiippppeeeee!!!!
Tue, 3 Oct 2017 10:00:47 EST Manic Monday Busy day today. Lots of phone calls to see what needs done, and appointments re funeral homes, et al.

Turns out that the county has funds to pay for indigent burials. I think all states have this. In Idaho the county will pay $950 for a "basic burial or cremation" plus $450 to open and close the plot, and they have a section of a cemetery as a "paupers field" sort of thing. You can't apply the $950 to a more expensive funeral and burial. If there are funds available to pay for an u... Mon, 2 Oct 2017 12:04:56 EST FlyLady October Challenge: Day 19 Today is Sunday: Renew Your Spirit Day

This week we are in Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room

This month's Habit is: Paper Clutter

Morning Routine:
Get Dressed to Shoes including Hair/Face, Brush Teeth
Make Bed
Swish & Swipe
Empty Dishwasher
Reboot Laundry (a Load a Day Keeps CHAOS Away)
Check Your Calendar
Check Your Control Journal

... Sun, 1 Oct 2017 11:45:48 EST Sweets It seems to me that I do better longer term if I just give up sugar altogether.

The times I've made treats with sugar substitutes keep me wanting more treats. It it met my low carb goals, when my real goal is to get rid of the sweet tooth.

Your experience? Sun, 1 Oct 2017 10:53:33 EST Sunday Woke up about 4 am and finally got up. Will go back to bed in a little bit and try to get some more sleep.

Have two young women coming over this morning to study for our Unit Quiz Monday afternoon. Need to get some cleaning done before they come over. Or at least tidy up the kitchen.

Sent a very vague email to the teacher asking for a tentative arrangement to take the quiz at an undetermined time. The family asked me to act as intermediary between them and the hospital... Sun, 1 Oct 2017 06:45:44 EST Sunny Saturday Sunny and no wind, nice after yesterday's gloom. Sat, 30 Sep 2017 14:10:25 EST new to the group hi y'all!

I am new to this group, but not to spark.

It has been FOREVER since I was here at spark. I decided this morning I have to get back into my low carb/Atkins lifestyle. However, it's been so long since I did it I feel like I will be relearning a lot of stuff.

I plan to "study" over the weekend and get a menu and groceries for the week, and start with low carb on Monday.

I haven't stepped on a scale in a few months so that will be coming Mond... Fri, 29 Sep 2017 18:38:15 EST Finally Friday I looked at the electric bill for this month and was appalled. Then my daughter pointed out that there were many more showers, laundry loads, and dishwasher loads, plus everyone is cooking separately. So it isn't really out of line, but it sure gave me a start! Fri, 29 Sep 2017 13:06:09 EST After Wednesday comes Thursday For those of you who managed to find Wednesday...

Busy day today. I'll go to Bakomeza's school and try to talk to her principal, then to Mom's to clean her picture window and sweep her patio, which is getting buried under leaves. I have a mandatory study group at 4:30 for my Japanese class, and ESL teaching this evening. Lots of free time, but a very chopped up day. Thu, 28 Sep 2017 10:44:51 EST Where's Wednesday? Wed, 27 Sep 2017 12:42:58 EST Terrific Tuesday! Marwah is coming over at 11 to pick tomatoes (and anything else she wants) from my garden, and then I have a massage at 1. I need to clean up the kitchen before she comes and go to the store after the massage. Meat is on sale this week and today's the last day.

Lettie might be coming over tonight to study. I need to check on that. We were going to study for the Quiz, but with that put off until Monday...

Have a great day, everyone! Tue, 26 Sep 2017 10:10:44 EST Marvelous Monday! No Japanese class today! I actually enjoy Japanese class, but I guess there's enough of the kid in me to revel in a day when school is cancelled. Don't know why class was cancelled. Hope all is well with the teacher.

Nothing much planned for today. Maybe I'll take Russell for a good walk somewhere, since I don't have to prepare for class. Though my legs are pretty stiff and sore from cleaning up under Mom's walnut trees yesterday. I swept up about two gallons (based on the size of... Mon, 25 Sep 2017 10:12:40 EST Happy Sunday! That's all. Sun, 24 Sep 2017 09:40:49 EST Saturday? Not hunting this weekend, didn't prep. Do the prep this weekend, then go next. Sat, 23 Sep 2017 15:34:27 EST Friday Fall Not yet, but in a couple of hours it will be officially fall.

No, 48 is not normal for this time of year. On September 3, it was 100, which is 20+ degrees above normal. On September 21, it was 48, which is about 30 degrees below normal. And, yes, that is a 50+ degree change between the highs on the 3rd and the 21st! Normal, or rather average, for this time of year is in the mid to upper 70s.

It is supposed to warm up over the next week or so. Just a few degrees a day, bu... Fri, 22 Sep 2017 12:10:36 EST Thursday Russell wandered by the heating vent this morning, checking to see if it was putting out heat. So I turned on the furnace It was 63 inside, and not likely to get much warmer, with an outside high today of 48 and raining, so no solar heat coming through the windows.

Absolutely nothing on my calendar for today.

Have a great day! Thu, 21 Sep 2017 09:38:48 EST Need ideas for 50 years My 50th birthday is next month and I've been dreading it for quite some time. After some reflection, I realized that 50 years is a gift and I would feel differently about this if I had a life threatening illness and was praying to make it to 50. So it's all about perspective and it's time to change mine.

I would like to come up with 50 things to do throughout the year to celebrate. This will make the year more enjoyable and may even get me out the rut I'm in and spice things up a ... Wed, 20 Sep 2017 22:47:14 EST Newbie...but no. :) Hello everyone!

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello! I'm Heather and I live in Washington state. I have about 125 lbs to lose. I'm new to this forum, but not new to weight loss...that's for sure! I've just quit Weight Watchers, which worked for me for a while, but I'm such a carb addict that I got to a point that my weight just stalled and I couldn't break free. I'm hoping that low carb will help me kind of break free from that addiction and get me losing again. I'v... Wed, 20 Sep 2017 10:35:31 EST Whew! on Wednesday Finally heard from my niece. I knew she'd evacuated from St John in the US Virgin Islands to Puerto and was supposed to be going Stateside a few days ago, but didn't know if she'd made it. She did. Whew! They tried to evacuate all non-essential personnel (that is, all but a few emergency/disaster types) from St John to Puerto Rico, and now Puerto Rico is in the eye of a Category 4 hurricane. My heart goes out to them.

Anyway, the day is off to a good start. Russell let me sleep in ... Wed, 20 Sep 2017 10:35:16 EST Tuesday Nothing officially on the calendar for today.

It's not quite 9:00 and I've already spent an hour and a half studying. Ugh.

Got in over 15,000 steps yesterday, thanks to walking the dog twice, walking to both of my classes, and then walking in the exercise class, plus the regular around the house walking.

Heading over to Mom's house soon. Will walk both dogs and probably play a game or two with Mom. Then home for more studying and cutting up Russell's chicke... Tue, 19 Sep 2017 10:54:57 EST Macrobiotic and Maintainable Monday! It's been a while since I looked for alliterative words.

Let's have a Macrobiotic Monday and be sure to get in lots of good little critters for our gut biomes, and a Maintainable Monday as we live and eat in way to have long term health and fitness and not just a short term diet!

I am so glad that my niece and her fiance and cat are off of St. John! Hurricane Maria is supposed to hit the island head on. It's also supposed to hit Puerto Rico, but at least that island ha... Mon, 18 Sep 2017 09:32:29 EST Sunny Sunday, too! Oh, I do love fall days when I can take Russell out for nice walks in the middle of the day! We walked along the canyon rim this morning - someone said the trail was a mile long, and we went there and back. Lots of people and dogs out walking or sometimes running. Went to Swenson's to pick up some beef heart for Russell (poor baby was almost out of food) and ended up with probably 30 pounds of assorted meat - mostly for Russell, but some for me. Now I'm home studying.

Have a great... Sun, 17 Sep 2017 13:46:23 EST Sunny Saturday! Should be a beautiful day here. Lots of sunshine and no wind. High of 64. It's funny how relative temps can be. Last spring, 64 was a wonderful warm day. After the unusually warm temps this summer, it seems too cold to work outside. Got to work outside anyway.

Lots of running around to do today. Russell and I will head over to the Farmers Market, starting with a stroll through the wetlands next door to the market so he can, as the saying goes, get things out of his system. (Dogs ar... Sat, 16 Sep 2017 10:47:00 EST Finally fall! High today of 64! It got up to 90 on Monday, and 100 less than two weeks ago. 50s next week. Guess it's time to get out my fall wardrobe. Actually, it's time to shop for my fall wardrobe, since most of my clothes are too big! Fri, 15 Sep 2017 10:11:00 EST Thankful Thursday Or should this one be Tuesday?

Not much planned for today. I'll take Mom's car in to get it cleaned inside and out, and I'll go to Winco while I wait. Probably do some yardwork at Mom's as high is supposed to be 77. Mow my own yard. I need to pick tomatoes. And study, of course. That's about it. Thu, 14 Sep 2017 09:17:28 EST Wonderful Wednesday! We seem to be having a lull in the storms at the moment. Lots of clean-up and recovery and resettlement to do, but the storms are over. Wonderful!

Today is supposed to be the last hot day for quite a while. Only in the mid 80s today. 10 degrees above normal, but it was 100 here within the past week. Then down to the 60s and 70s. And little smoke, which is also great!

Didn't sleep well last night. When I did sleep, I kept dreaming in Japanese! Or at least dreaming about s... Wed, 13 Sep 2017 09:10:36 EST Thankful Thursday We survived here in SE GA. Surrounding communities are still without power. Actually, I think there are areas within OUR community still without power. My school has ceased to be a shelter for emergency personnel out of Brunswick because it is without power.

Since our schools are still acting as shelters, we are out of school until at least tomorrow. We'll probably get an update at some point today or tomorrow as to whether we'll have school on Thursday.

Did y'all see w... Tue, 12 Sep 2017 12:18:11 EST 1000 today is my one thousandth day in a row of logging in to SP Tue, 12 Sep 2017 09:15:07 EST 9/11 Take a moment to thank those who participated in the rescues and other attempts to save lives, then and now. Mon, 11 Sep 2017 12:28:30 EST Monday A new week - the first week of fall! Today and tomorrow are supposed to be in the upper 80s, then low 80s on Wednesday. 60s and 70s for the next seven days - including a high of 60 on Friday! Guess it's time to get out my fall and winter clothes - and keep out some summer clothes, too. Glad I have a big closet!

My "Over 60 and Getting Fit" exercise class at the college starts today. Don't know what to expect, though it's supposed to stress walking. Should get in lots of steps today... Mon, 11 Sep 2017 09:14:30 EST Sunday--Safe Praying for all people that have to find safety and security!

Cool and Sunny here! Packer Sunday! I've decided to move slowly this morning. Putzing around and counting my Blessings! Hugs to All! Sun, 10 Sep 2017 10:01:56 EST Well, its Saturday.... and its early. Woke up stewing about my Saturday morning. Supposed to pick up our new RV and got a call yesterday that they had damaged a door to one of the storage bays. UGH> We haven't even signed papers on this yet and I'm ready to back out. My OCD is over-reacting to all of this and I couldn't sleep. They SAY they will fix this. The SAY they will fix that. I'm just ready to throw in the towel. Is this buyers remorse? Or am I justified being a bit piss**y about this? I don't k... Sat, 9 Sep 2017 07:27:18 EST TGIF It's simple and true! Fri, 8 Sep 2017 08:27:49 EST Thankful Thursday Very little news of niece in US Virgin Islands. SIL said that she and SI "weathered the storm but that's all we know." That's the important thing, anyway! DB and SIL live on the northeast Florida coast, near Jacksonville - right on the coast, with their own dock and everything. DB is currently working in Atlanta, which should be inland enough to be spared the worst of Irma. SIL is going to Houston to be with her son, who is in Houston and OK. People are OK. Stuff can be replaced.

N... Thu, 7 Sep 2017 09:44:09 EST Wipe Out Wednesday W-I-P-E-O-U-T Wed, 6 Sep 2017 11:05:40 EST Howdy Hi So I'm still learning the carb game. A couple weeks ago my Gastroenterologist decided the best way to help my heartburn was to take me off metformin (or something like that) and put me on a 50 carb and day and no dairy diet. This all came about because while on the met I was getting really bad heartburn and my primary doctor hadn't checked my sugar levels since December of last year when I was put on it.
Long story short, I love carbs and this has been a challenge giving up the little ... More ice on my neck and minimal movement. Don't want to startle the muscles into another spasm.

I am playing with loan schedules for a client (nerd fun), and before I take a muscle relaxer, I'm going to make a fast trip to Starbucks.

And maybe some Netflix later.

Or coloring books - if I don't bend my neck.

Or a nap.

... Sun, 3 Sep 2017 11:19:11 EST Sassy Saturday! Had the hubby come up with *s* words....So its sassy Saturday! Have Landon today, so sissy can go to cheer with step dad. Its too hot, but they haven't cancelled the game. It was moved to an earlier time, but not sure that will make much difference today. Its already 72 outside and expected to get to 111. UGH. Enjoy your sassy day, everyone. Sat, 2 Sep 2017 10:23:17 EST The 2-edged sword of low carb becoming well known I guess we had to expect that with the popularity of low carb eating plans and processes, it would become better known and then nearly useless as a term.

(I'm thinking about how vegetarian used to mean no meat and has gradually grown to mean for some people "only chicken' or 'only fish')

Anyhow, I keep coming across recipes on SparkPeople clicked as low carb and finding that it can be huge amounts of carbs and has low fat ingredients. Sat, 2 Sep 2017 09:59:34 EST Fall Friday Can you believe it's September already? The start of the meteorologic Fall, if not the astronomical Fall. Thu, 31 Aug 2017 07:36:52 EST New Scale I finally purchased a new scale after using an old scale for over twenty years and well aware it wasn't accurate. The scale is making me honest and brought me to begin a long journey of losing both pounds and inches. I am noting physical problems related to my weight, so I am motivated to improve my health. My husband, who now has an overweight BMI with the new scale, believes the old scale is more or still accurate. The old scale weighs you fifteen pounds less than the new scale. What c... Wed, 30 Aug 2017 17:17:12 EST Whoopie Wednesday! I'm finalee going to the doctor regarding my knee. Urgent Care will serve me better than waiting for an available appointment.

Take care of yourself! It's the only BODY you are gifted. Hugs Wed, 30 Aug 2017 07:59:12 EST Tuesday Not much going on today except studying! ESL this morning, and today is watering day, but other than that it will be studying (Japanese) and cooking and freezing some zucchini and/or eggplant casseroles.

I bought a freezer a month or so ago, and it was practically empty when I brought the stuff over that I had in Mom's freezer. It's practically full already! Of course, I have four roughly 11 pound packs of beef back ribs, and they take up a lot of room. I need to get a bunch of to... Tue, 29 Aug 2017 09:58:58 EST Where do you live? We haven't done this in a while. With all the talk about weather (110? Yikes!) I was wondering where folks are. Please share, if you feel so inclined.

I'm in Twin Falls, in southern Idaho. In a desert. Tue, 29 Aug 2017 09:53:55 EST Monday High of 97 today.

Japanese class this afternoon. Studying this morning! Mon, 28 Aug 2017 09:09:41 EST Sunday I'm off to Mom's in a couple of hours, to do some yard work and play some games with her. I might take the two dogs to the park so Sandy can go for a walk on the grass. We definitely don't want to re-open the sore on her foot. Mom usually feeds me lunch but I think I'll take my own with me. It's a lot easier for everyone!

In the meantime, I'm boiling up some bone broth that needs to be canned or frozen. I'll get that taken care of this morning. This evening I'll work on some of the... Sun, 27 Aug 2017 09:27:38 EST Newbie from singapore Hi I am a male 37yo at a height of 168cm and 105kg. My Friend introduce me to this diet and so I decided to give this a try. I didn't manage to find much info on this diet unlike other diets where I could find more info.hope to learn from all of you!! Sat, 26 Aug 2017 13:07:56 EST Saturday What, no thread yet?!

I'm up and moving, but it's already time to regroup and make a better plan. I just made up some client files and got some stuff out of my line of sight - big visual improvement! But that's it for the client work today.

Today Bella is going to have to deal with the vacuum and the carpet steam cleaner - I can't deal with the house like it is any longer! Also got to run a couple of errands.

I really need a whole weekend to myself, but may... Sat, 26 Aug 2017 12:39:48 EST 3 am....Welcome to Friday!! Once again woke up early and needed coffee. LOL. I don't know what it is with my sleep system. I can usually sleep till 5:30 or so, but woke up at 2:30 this morning and sleep just wasn't going to continue. So a very early morning today which means lots will get done...if I just do it!
Have a great day and take time to smell the coffee! Fri, 25 Aug 2017 06:38:22 EST Pretty sure it's Thursday Not going to work today, too hard to get around. I'm using a walker, man does that make me feel old. But too much pain in the knee for just a cane. Thu, 24 Aug 2017 11:55:54 EST Wet Wednesday! Well, or damp, anyway. Though since I live in a desert even damp is good. Unless you're trying to harvest, probably. Which I'm not, so it's good.

Japanese is HARD! Or maybe it's because it's been about 45 years since I last tried to memorize anything. Learn, yes. I've taken a lot of graduate classes and professional classes in the past 45 years. But memorizing? I am discovering that that's a whole different can of worms or bowl of wax or whatever cliche you feel like using today. <... Wed, 23 Aug 2017 13:15:32 EST Tough Tuesday Going to be tough to get through. My knee hurts, my lower back hurts, and I want to sleep. Tue, 22 Aug 2017 13:20:59 EST Where's the sun Monday? The show starts in a couple of hours. Will you be watching, either in person or online?

A busy day for me today. This morning will be full of the eclipse. The actual event only lasts a couple of hours (from roughly 10:00 to roughly 1:00 around here), but there's so much hype about it that it sort of takes over the morning. Then my first Japanese class this afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. Bakomeza is coming over about 4:00 just to chat. And I figure as long as I'm all hyped up about th... Mon, 21 Aug 2017 10:00:35 EST Still Sunny on Sunday! Tomorrow should be a different story, at least for a few hours!

We're supposed to have 97% coverage, but they say that's not nearly as close to totality as it sounds.

Russell and I are going over to Mom's this morning to take Sandy for a walk, pick up apples and walnuts, cut the suckers off the snowball bush, and weed the flower garden. Which sounds like a lot more work than it should really be. I hope! Then we'll play some games with Mom and maybe stay for lunch. I'm t... Sun, 20 Aug 2017 10:55:53 EST Eclipse, NASA, high school, and bragging! You may have heard me bragging about my niece, who is involved with a NASA project about the solar eclipse on Monday. She started the project when she was a sophomore in high school!

Teams across the path of totality, from coast to coast, are participating. They will be sending hot air balloons up 60,000 to 90,000 feet and live streaming pictures of the shadow of the eclipse across the country. Some teams will also be conducting experiments.

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 10:20:45 EST Sunny Saturday! Russell is one happy puppy. It's cool enough in the mornings now that I can put a blanket over my lap while in my recliner. He prefers having a blanket on my lap when he gets up here, and when the blanket is then put over him, too, he's in hound heaven!

It's good that he's getting in a little bit of extra rest this morning. We're going to walk to the Farmers Market! We have walked to the area where it's held before, but never walked to the market itself. One thing for sure - it wil... Sat, 19 Aug 2017 09:56:58 EST Fantabulous Friday! Not much planned for today. ESL, and then, if I remember to do it, I'll go out to a farm and see if I can get some white patty pan squash for Mom. This farm is the only place I know that has them, and, according to Mom, they HAVE to be white. The yellow ones aren't the same. They take them to the Farmers Market, but don't have many. I'm hoping if I go to the farm today, before they pick for the market, I'll be able to get what Mom wants. And, while I'm on the way, I want to stop at a farm sto... Fri, 18 Aug 2017 11:17:10 EST flax bread Hi Everyone
I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask food-related questions?
You may have heard of the Wheat Belly Flax Seed Wrap/Bread/Tortilla/Pitta. Various versions are on the web, basically it's 3 Tbsp ground flax seeds (linseed), 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1 Tbsp oil (original recipe says coconut oil, I use olive oil), 1 Tbsp water, 1 large egg. Mix dry, add wet and mix well, nuke 2-3' or cook in non-stick pan. I usually use a rectangular silicone pan then cut in h... Fri, 18 Aug 2017 01:42:49 EST Thursday? I didn't see a Thread so I'm here to say Hello! I got to show up again Today!
YYyiiippppeeeeee!!!! Thu, 17 Aug 2017 11:31:15 EST Woo-Woo Wednesday! Still counting blessings! Wed, 16 Aug 2017 09:03:10 EST Tuesday Mostly just planning on having a good day! ESL this morning and that's about it.

Hope you have a good day, too. Tue, 15 Aug 2017 10:43:55 EST Newbie in Greece Hi Everyone I've just joined this group. A couple of days ago I started New Atkins. Low-carb has always been my go-to diet to crash off a few kilos, I even have the original 1972 Atkins Diet Revolution book! But in the last year I've gained a lot of weight, probably partly due to endocrinologist fiddling with my thyroid meds. I'm back on the original dosage again but the weight hasn't shifted so I need something drastic for the long haul, not just to lose the recent gain but also to fina... Tue, 15 Aug 2017 00:02:59 EST Monday High today of 74 and humidity of 70%! Temp back up to 87 tomorrow.

I've been cooking one serving per day of beef back ribs in my Instant Pot, then saving the bones and the cooking liquid. Today will be a good day to cook the last serving of ribs and then cook the bones up in the Instant Pot for bone broth, then can the broth. Guess that's what I'll be doing this afternoon.

This morning I'll take Bakomeza's grandmother and brother to their doctor appointments. Grandma's i... Mon, 14 Aug 2017 08:54:39 EST Sunday Off to Mom's in a few minutes to pick up apples, pick up walnuts, sweep the driveway and weed the small flower garden. Fortunately I've got them all more or less under control so it's just maintenance and not starting from scratch. Should take a couple of hours or so. And I'll walk the dogs while I'm over there, too. Can't forget the dogs!

High today of only 87! It's practically sweater weather! Well, comparatively speaking, anyway.

My timing stinks! I'm doing a brief eg... Sun, 13 Aug 2017 10:33:33 EST Saturday Off to the Farmers Market with Marwah and her two kids in a couple of hours. May go to the U-Pick place while we're there. I'll take Russell with us. Not sure how that will work but we'll give it a try. Wisam always asks why the dog isn't with me. Will check the paper and see if there's anything else going on for kids today.

That't my excitement for the day. I did my laundry last night (clothes) and am washing Libby's sheets and towels and the new towels this morning. I hope they'l... Sat, 12 Aug 2017 09:10:34 EST Friday! Got Libby safely to the airport yesterday, and got me back safely. Absolutely no problems along the way. I really enjoyed having her here. I'm glad she got a chance to see Mom (her grandma) again. With Mom almost 92, there's a good chance that this might be the last time, even though Mom's in good shape. A year is a long time at that age.

Libby wanted a milk shake and curly fries when we stopped to get gas. I had the same. Then again on the way home. And ate bread/toast like it was... Fri, 11 Aug 2017 10:35:45 EST Thursday Started to put Thirstday, which should be appropriate, too! Drink up, everyone!

I take Libby back to Boise today to fly home. Doesn't seem like she's been here any time at all! Hope she had a good time, too.

Food has been OK until until last night when I got into her whole grain, nutty, seedy bread. With lots and lots of butter. Oh, was it ever good! It's gone now, except for enough for breakfast and plane food for her. I'm back on track. Thu, 10 Aug 2017 10:04:40 EST Wonderful Wednesday! A front moved through last night, bringing high winds (briefly) and cooler weather (also briefly). A delightful night for sleeping. In fact, I plan on going back to bed very shortly.

Mom and her dog, Sandy, came over for supper last night. Sandy had found something in Mom's yard to eat in the afternoon and was drinking lots and lots of water. Well, whatever she found plus a bunch of the water came up on my carpet. Lots and lots of stuff. Ugh. Very gross. She must have felt much bet... Wed, 9 Aug 2017 08:48:42 EST Tuesday My tomato plants are full of tomatoes. Mostly still green, but I picked at least 6 yesterday. Today is Tomato Tuesday around here!

Things are going well with Libby here.

My chest freezer seems to be working ok. I don't have nearly as much meat as I thought I did. Which is a good thing. It means I've been using it up. My first thought on seeing how much room was left was, of course, that I needed to rush out and buy more food! I'll use up the food that's left from 2015 a... Tue, 8 Aug 2017 10:47:54 EST Oh, Monday I just hate it when you rest up all weekend and get enough sleep and then blow it Sunday night. I woke up around 4 and just never really got back to a full sleep. Bleh. At least nothing has (yet) exploded on my desk. But give it time....

Have a great day, all! Mon, 7 Aug 2017 12:05:19 EST Superior Sunday "sitting on the dock by the bay, watchin the tide roll away". So lovely before dawn. Boats are readying to go out for a day of fishing and I'm snug in my trailer watching the early morning scurry. It's about 6am and the coffee is freshly brewed. Life feels good today😘 Sun, 6 Aug 2017 09:19:33 EST Saturday Russell woke me up wanting to go out. I agreed, since the didn't want to go out last night. I thought it was about 5, given how dark it was. Instead it was 6! I can't believe how much later it gets light in the morning. I suppose it gets dark earlier, too, but I'm not usually out then.

Breakfast with SIL this morning, then some errands (including picking up meat from Mom's freezer!) and then a frantic session of housecleaning.

Hope you all have a great day! Sat, 5 Aug 2017 08:52:21 EST Finally Friday!!!! Ready to make it a great day! :) How about you? Fri, 4 Aug 2017 10:50:34 EST Newbie - About to get started....soon Well as you see from my Topic title, I'm not really low-carbing - Yet. I'm kind of poking it with a stick. My main problem is consistency with ANY diet. This week I went back to one of my old eating plans, am doing well with it, and gradually pulling my carbs down. My net carbs are under 100 the last 4 days. I felt like moving gradually, I might not get the "low carb flu" or whatever. I know I did get really tired a few times when I went too low.

Note: I have lost 3.5 lbs in... Thu, 3 Aug 2017 15:07:40 EST Thursday I have been having very strange dreams for the past month or two. Very very strange.

Last night I wasn't at all hungry, but I "needed" to eat. Lots and lots and lots of calories, though not a lot of carbs. Today will be better.

Libby comes tomorrow and about all I've done to get ready is do some basic shopping (we'll have to go shopping after she gets here because I don't know what she eats) and wash clothes. Washing clothes is important because I hang them up to dry in ... Thu, 3 Aug 2017 08:44:55 EST Take 2 Thursday It's 53 degrees and it's awesome! I'd take another Thursday like this any day!! Thu, 3 Aug 2017 08:38:40 EST August Food Budget Challenge This is a very informal challenge for folks who want to keep - or get - their food budgets under control. We each set our own budgets, based on our own circumstances, then touch base throughout the month on how we're doing, special challenges and opportunities, ideas, etc.

We'd love to have you join us! Wed, 2 Aug 2017 18:24:24 EST Wednesda y--Weepy or Wispy???? Still working on each of those words. Hhhhmmmmm!!! Hugs Wed, 2 Aug 2017 09:44:20 EST Tuesday: Happy August! Thirty-one beautiful days coming up!

I'm taking tomorrow off, so I'd better get this desktop cleared by the end of the day! Have a great Tuesday, all!

67 Tue, 1 Aug 2017 10:23:20 EST Monday - Already August! Except its really Tuesday And just yesterday it was July 1!

Woke up about 5 with a headache. Took a couple of ibuprofin and went back to sleep. It helped but it's not completely gone. Will take it a bit easy today.

ESL this morning and getting the house in shape for Libby's visit. That's all I have planned for the day.

Will make a slow cooker recipe from Nom Nom Paleo for supper. Basically pork and cabbage and carrots and several seasonings. Here's a link if you interested. For that m... Mon, 31 Jul 2017 15:06:28 EST Monday--7/ 1/17--WOW! Where did the month fly? Hugs as we finish this 7th month of the year!
YYYYiiiippppeeee!!!
Mon, 31 Jul 2017 09:24:49 EST Slenderizing Sunday! Definitely not slender, but there are definitely things I CAN and WILL be doing today to get me just a tad closer! How about you?

I booked a "feel good" massage for August 14 as a reward for losing 50 pounds since the first of the year. I'm not quite there yet, but don't know how busy she is. The two pounds I dropped overnight helped! Just .4 pounds to go. Hope I haven't jinxed myself by saying so!

Will take Russell over to Mom's house this morning to take her dog for a ... Sun, 30 Jul 2017 08:21:42 EST Saturday! A wonderfully cool night last night, and delightfully cool morning today. Poor Russell is shivering. He thinks I should get out the lap blanket for him. That is to say, he thinks I should put the lap blanket over my lap and let him get in under it.

Marwah, kids and I are going to the Farmers Market this morning, then we'll probably do something with/for the kids. Don't know what. I need to check and see what's available today. They sure had fun at the kids' thing last week, and I ... Sat, 29 Jul 2017 09:02:38 EST Finally Fantastic Friday! My bike and I got along better last night. I think we're going to do OK together - even when I'm riding it.

Went over to Mom's house last night and picked up four 5-gallon buckets of apples from under her tree. That's more than two bushels! I sure wish someone could use them for something. I need to add a layer of "browns" to my compost pile/lasagna bed and then I can put another layer of apples there.

ESL this morning, and that's it!

Have a fantastic Friday,... Fri, 28 Jul 2017 09:45:13 EST Thursday That's all. Just Thursday. You can make it whatever kind of Thursday you want!

I bought an exercise bike and a charcoal grill at an auction last week, and they were delivered late yesterday afternoon. Haven't really looked at the grill, other than to see that it's a globe-shaped Weber-type thing. The bike is one of those that has a fan that's worked by the pedals, so the air resistance on the fan makes it harder the faster you pedal. The handles are connected to the pedals, too, so... Thu, 27 Jul 2017 09:26:16 EST Wednesday --Weeble Wobble But don't fall down.

I woke up thinking about Weebles (toys from the late 70's & 80's). No matter what happens I get back up. Lol! I'm not sure I ever 'fall'--I just wobble around until I find my center.

Hugs Wed, 26 Jul 2017 09:39:22 EST Terrific Tuesday High of only 88 today! But humidity in the 40s. I know, I know - for a lot of you that would be great! Humidity yesterday was 21 here.

Got most of yesterday's to-do list done. Didn't go to book club, but did everything else. Even went to the City Council meeting and spoke in the General Public Input time. Pretty non-controversial - I just related about my young friend nearly drowning and said that I'd thank the life guard by name if I knew what it was, and said that I'd talked to s... Serendipity - "luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for"

I wonder serendipitous events are in store for us all today!

I'm watering my garden this morning, then will take Russell for a walk. Marwah and her two little ones (3 and 5) are coming over and we're all going to the Farmers Market. I haven't decided whether to take Russell with us or not. I doubt that I will, though he would love to go. I might go over and pick up app... Sat, 22 Jul 2017 09:59:21 EST Friday--STOP raining in WI! We need to send this rain to CA! My cousin has been living in a draught area for a few years now.

I may purchase a kayak! Hugs to All! Fri, 21 Jul 2017 07:22:02 EST Thursday Had a PT appointment yesterday at 2:00. When I got home, after going to the grocery store and getting meat and dairy and veggies, and then stopping at another store, and then going to Mom's house, and then going to the auction place to check out a few thing, all in 90+ degree heat, I discovered that the power was off. I'd been gone for about 3 hours and didn't know how long it had been off (the paper this morning said "early afternoon" or how long it would stay off, so didn't want to open the... Thu, 20 Jul 2017 09:39:47 EST Wednesday! YYYiiiipp ppeeee!!! I don't see a thread so I JUMPED in! Hugs Wed, 19 Jul 2017 10:01:52 EST Tactful Tuesday? After yesterday I need some tact to continue the policy conversation that happened yesterday with my new attorney. Pray for me to find more tact! Tue, 18 Jul 2017 08:07:59 EST Mondays are never good Mom woke me shortly after three this morning, said she was "twisted up", as if her blankets were tangled. They were not, and after adjusting her this way and that, I put her oxygen tester on her finger and it was at 76. She knew something was wrong, but couldn't articulate it. So she's in the hospital now, and I'm taking a break while my sister and BIL are with her. Mon, 17 Jul 2017 09:23:01 EST Sleeping in Sunday I wish. Evening insomnia, followed by waking too early. Sun, 16 Jul 2017 12:42:44 EST How do you replace the joy of eating carbs? MISSLISA1973 asks a really great question, one that has a LOT of answers:

"I miss the dopamine from carbs. How do you replace the joy of eating carbs? I need a replacement so I stop falling off the wagon." Sun, 16 Jul 2017 10:15:20 EST NSV Real quick, before I go out and weed my garden before heading over to Mom's to weed hers.

I was doing something last night, no idea what, and happened to be in front of the door to the bathroom, so I could see my reflection in the big mirror. Something looked a bit odd, and then I realized I could actually see the wall behind me BETWEEN MY LEGS! Between my thighs, even in my baggy shorts! Wow!

(You may not appreciate this unless you have been morbidly or at least severel... Sun, 16 Jul 2017 09:29:57 EST Saturday Sigh. I seem to be having lots of trouble with machines/equipment these days. Well, not really lots, but what I am having is really annoying.

The screen on my brand new laptop is pink. It's usable (so far) but pink, and seems to be getting worse. I guess I'll be going to Best Buy today and see if they'll either fix it for me or replace it. I have all of my passwords for EVERYTHING stored on it so will need to change all of my passwords if they replace it. Grrr.

Other tha... Sat, 15 Jul 2017 09:23:58 EST Finally Friday! For me, it's Finally Freezer Friday! The freezer that I ordered three weeks ago tomorrow, that was supposed to be here in "seven to ten days" is finally being delivered on Day 21. At least, I think it is. They said it would be. Sometime today, no idea when, but they'll give me 30 to 40 minutes notice. Or so they said. A good day for staying home. Which I do a lot anyway, but it feels very confining when someone else tells me to!

Woke up stiff and sore all over. Literally head (head... Fri, 14 Jul 2017 11:03:12 EST Thankful Thursday Very thankful that my young friend didn't drown yesterday! I called Parks and Rec and told them that I wished I had the lifeguard's name so I could officially thank him (I'm not sure I even thanked him yesterday, let alone get his name!) and the woman there said that they report that kind of thing so they would have a record of it. The guy in charge is supposed to call me and give me the kid's name. Sure, that's their job, but it's a part of their job that we hope they never have to do!
... Thu, 13 Jul 2017 10:56:54 EST Wet Wednesday! I just texted Bakomeza and her brother to see if they want to go swimming at the lake. The two oldest boys have said that they like to swim but it's too expensive to take them to the pool. I have no idea whether they actually know how to swim. I doubt it. If they want to go, we'll go about 4:00 and only stay an hour or so, which I told them. I'll have to check through my swim suits and see which one fits me. I have them in several different sizes. They were cheap at Ross many many years ago, ... Wed, 12 Jul 2017 11:39:09 EST Tuesday, July 11 No cool title from me! Haven't had enough coffee yet.

I was up early because I felt something tickle my neck and then my arm, and my brain told me it was a spider. That was it - done sleeping! I tie my hair up, so I hate to think my brain was right but... I'm still shuddering.

Today I'm off to the PT job before lunch, and then home to do some client work. I did a bunch of small things yesterday and now I'm staying home to work. I have a deep tissue massage at 4:30 ... Tue, 11 Jul 2017 10:46:53 EST Medical Monday Not for me, fortunately. I'm taking Bakomeza and her grandmother to the hospital for same day surgery. Grandma is having all of her remaining teeth pulled, and, because of her health conditions, has to have it done in the surgical center at the hospital. We have to be there by 7:40 and surgery is scheduled for 9:40. Don't know how long it will take, but I expect them to keep her for quite a while afterwards to make sure she's OK.

Food will be a bit messed up today. I had breakfast ... Mon, 10 Jul 2017 08:56:22 EST Stupendous Sunday! I'm "officially" down 3.3 pounds this week! That is, the average of my daily weights from Monday - Sunday is 3.3 pounds less than my average weight from the previous Monday through Sunday. Which was 4.2 pounds less than my average weight from the Monday through Sunday the week before! It won't last, but it's sure fun when it's happening. And no, I don't know why it's happening. No particular change from previous weeks. Whooshie and I have just become good buds, I guess.

No special... Sun, 9 Jul 2017 08:30:35 EST Spectacular Saturday! It's supposed to be hot again today. And for the next week, too, or more. I don't like the heat. Not only is it uncomfortable for me, but my tomatoes aren't setting, either. I am so glad I have a/c! And also that I seem to tolerate more heat than I used to, at least when I'm sitting under a ceiling fan. I keep the a/c set at 80 and do fine. Of course, it may just be that the thermostat is off.

Lots of plans for this morning, before it gets too hot. Russell Walk, of course. (Still ... Sat, 8 Jul 2017 08:58:39 EST Friday? I'm all mixed up when it comes to what day it is. I posted this morning's weight on my spreadsheet and couldn't figure out why I was short a day's posting. I was sure that today was Saturday, but I'd forgotten to enter Friday's weight. Or did I enter Friday's in Thursday's spot and I'd forgotten to post Thursday's? OK, so it was just a few seconds, but it sure seemed like a long time trying to figure it out.

This morning I'll take Bakomeza's grandmother to hospital to get pre-regi... Thu, 6 Jul 2017 04:00:34 EST Wonderful Wednesday! Spent the night at Mom's house so Russell could sleep in the windowless basement bedroom. (He was still upset but I'm sure it was lots better than if we'd been home.) The power went off for two hours, from about 7:45 to almost 10:00. Mom's freezer doesn't have a very good seal on it (very old freezer, new gaskets or seals or whatever not available) and it had gotten to almost 100 and the garage was hot, so duct-taped around the door and then taped a space blanket over the front and bottom of ... Sat, 1 Jul 2017 10:08:40 EST Friday! And a beautiful one, too, if I do say so myself! Russell woke me up a little before 5:00, and I opened up the house. Supposed to get up to 86 today, but for now it is absolutely delightful.

ESL this morning, and that's all I have planned for the day.

Stopped by a Mexican grocery store last night to see what they had. It dries out much too quickly, with the heat and wind. And I need to drink lots of water today (and everyday), whether I'm thirsty or not.

I lost 4.6 pounds since yesterday morning! Unfortunately, I had gained 5.6 pounds since the morning before. I think ruts are one of the worst enemies of sticking with a healthy way of life! I get in a rut, quit looking for new recipes or ideas, get bored, stick with the same old things, and then instead of finding something new (or even just different) that fits with my healthy way of life, find something old that doesn't fit with my healthy way of life. Does that sound familiar?

Let's try something new today! It doesn't have to be anything big. A new reci... Fri, 23 Jun 2017 09:42:00 EST Thespian Thursday This goes back to one of Woubbie's daily team challenges. Fake it til you make it! We all have things we have to do (or at least should do) that we don't want to do. Do it anyway! Pretend you like to do it and want to do it and you'll find it's a lot easier than if you do it grudgingly and complaining all the way.

Nick left last night, so things should be more or less back to normal. CalGal, I'm sure you did!

Today is supposed to be about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. 86 vs 97. Much better! I am so glad that I live in a desert, so it does cool off at night.

Dentist appointment at 7:45 this morning, then Nick and Russell and I are going to go over and walk through the wetlands. I mentioned seeing red winged blackbirds there, and Nick said he hasn't seen any of those for decades. It's just a very short walk ... Wed, 21 Jun 2017 08:40:22 EST Triumphant Tuesday! What have you or will you triumph over today? Big or small, all triumphs count. Did you smile your snarky co-worker instead of being snarky back? Did you pass up the donuts/cookies/candy/junk food at the office or that your spouse or kids brought into the house? Did you exercise when you really want to just veg out? Be triumphant today!

One of my longer-term goals over on the monthly challenge thread is to get in one 20,000 fitbit step day before the end of summer. Well, I got it i... Tue, 20 Jun 2017 09:25:22 EST Marvelous Monday! (Can you tell I'm retired?!)

It looks to be a beautiful day today. Hot, but sunny and low humidity. My brother arrived last night and he and Mom are coming over for supper and to hang a few pictures. Mom does not like my bare walls! They don't bother me, but they definitely bother her.

It's delightfully cool now, so Russell and I had better get out walking!

Hope it's a mauvelous day for you, too! Mon, 19 Jun 2017 10:08:00 EST Thanks to all the dads Sunday! Don't think we have very many men who read our daily threads, but thanks to all of the dads out there! And to the women who have to be or have had to be both Mom and Dad to their kids, too.

A busy day today. I've got the chicken broth I was going to can last night in the pressure canner as I write. I'll take Russell out for a walk while the pressure is releasing, then go over to Mom's and finish cleaning up there. I also have beef broth that needs to be canned. My brother comes in ... Sun, 18 Jun 2017 10:45:04 EST Saturday I'm so mad at Russell! I had just finished cooking the first of a batch of great big fluffy pancakes, cooked in bacon fat, and had slathered on the nice soft butter and was pouring on the maple syrup when he woke me up. I rarely dream about food, but boy, did that one ever seem real! Especially the bacon. I could smell the bacon so clearly. It's probably a good thing he woke me up before I got the first bite. As real as that dream was, I'll bet even the dream pancakes and syrup would have bee... Sat, 17 Jun 2017 09:46:35 EST FEISTY Friday! Get UP! YYYiiippppeeeee! Tue, 13 Jun 2017 11:18:48 EST Whole30 vis a vis Low carb I have just spent two weeks adopting the lifestyle Whole30. And I did not loose a lb.
My daughter is having success with it, but for me, because currently I am minimally active (surgery 12 days ago), those nasty carbs still bite my (well you know).

This body of mine doesn't care where the carbs come from, the results seem the same. So back on the high protein, low carb diet for me.

But will bring in more whole foods...looking forward to jumping and running again.... I am a serial restarter, but this time its sticking :) I finished my 2 week induction and I am down 10.8 pounds :) I feel fantastic, no more bloating or lethargy, and the cravings are gone. Just thought I would update you all :)

Kim Mon, 12 Jun 2017 09:01:56 EST Monday Monday Monday Good morning everyone. Have to share what happened yesterday but first some background. You all know I train and compete in dog sports. When we earn a title we are expected to bring a treat to our training class to celebrate. Mostly the treats are deadly sweet, lovingly homemade and delicious. I just ignore what goes on in the small kitchen and concentrate on training. Yesterday a friend brought her treat and made a point of having me try some of it—BRIE and GRAPES! She and her husband have d... Mon, 12 Jun 2017 08:28:04 EST Sunday--Y YIIPPPEEE ! I think SP has finally made the ads obnoxious enough that I'm going to pay for premium just to avoid the videos. They really slow down my old computer and for some reason aren't blocked by my adblocker software. You're the one who recommended the adblocker software, Woubbie. Do you know of something that will stop the video ads, too? I asked SP if they would show up on premium and were told they would not.

I woke up this morning sore... Sun, 11 Jun 2017 08:57:48 EST Sunny Saturday Where is everybody today?

Another hot and windy day here, high of 97 later. I went to the library to pick up a book on hold and then did my grocery shopping. I’m going to read for awhile before I tackle some house cleaning and food prep for Sunday dinner. I found a recipe for Raspberry Yogurt Cake, which isn’t really cake at all, sounds more like a cheesecake, and I’ll use Truvia instead of Splenda and that will be dessert. Something that is refreshing and hopefully nobody notices ... Sat, 10 Jun 2017 14:55:49 EST Fantastic Friday! I seem to be whooshing in lots of ways! Yesterday evening the dog slipped down beside me in my chair and I didn't even notice. It wasn't tight at all. And then a neighbor asked me how much weight I've lost, said that it really showed, and said that I'm walking a lot faster. And this morning I was down 1.8 pounds from yesterday, and yesterday was a new low. And I'm already below my mini goal for June 30.

Actually, it's not a mini goal at all. One of my goals over on the monthly cha... Fri, 9 Jun 2017 10:49:27 EST Thirsty Thursday We set a record high for the day yesterday - 95 degrees. Previous high was 94. Couple the heat with the very low humidity (this is a desert, after all) and my garden just slurped up the water. Me, too.

Today is supposed to be cooler. I was going to go over to Mom's first thing and take Russell and Sandy for a walk, but I need to stay home and water. Maybe tomorrow. Wed, 7 Jun 2017 19:52:10 EST Weary Wednesday Got up about 6:00 and fed Russell and let him out, and then we both went back to bed. Don't know about him, but I slept soundly until about 7:45, then dozed in bed until about 8:15. I guess I needed it.

It's supposed to get up to 96 today, and sunny. We get pretty intense sun around here, since it's a desert and the humidity is really low. Guess Russell and I should get out now for our walk since it will be too hot later.

Have a wonderful day, everyone! Wed, 7 Jun 2017 10:45:59 EST Terrific Tuesday Not much going on today. ESL this morning, then this afternoon I'm taking Magadelena (Bakomeza's grandmother, who was in the hospital last week) for a follow up appointment with her doctor. I'll check with B afterwards and see what this week's assignments are in her online class. There's a political meeting tonight, too. But it will be a terrific day because I shall make it so!

It didn't start out that way, though. I put soaker hose down in the new garden bed out front, and discove... It was an official day off, an official I-Don't-Have-To-Do-Anything Day and I enjoyed every minute. Actually, it wasn't all that different from a regular day, other than the feeling that I was completely free. Attitude is so important!

I'm back on track today, though. I know, summer doesn't officially begin until the middle of June, but the high today is supposed to be 91 here and that is definitely summery! And anyway, meteorological summer begins the first of June. And women can wear white shoes and white pants anytime after Memorial Day!

No real plans for the day. Fantastic, as a matter of fact! Russell got me up about 7:00, and got right up and planted that new bed out front. It's a lot bigger than I thought it was! I was sure I had way too many plants, but they all fit in just right. I planted two spaghetti squash, one honeydew melon, a pattypan squash, a zucchini, two peppers, six "early" cabbages and six regular cabbages. Plus lined both sides of the bed with a total of 17 marigolds (one 6 pack only had five plants... Fri, 2 Jun 2017 12:34:32 EST June Grocery Budget Challenge Has your grocery budget got you down? Wish you could control it a bit better? If so, please join us on our June Grocery Budget Challenge! It's a make-you-own-challenge kind of a challenge. Mostly just posting about how we're doing on whatever our own grocery budget happens to be. It's different for everyone, of course, and depends on a lot of different factors, including family size, ages, location, what you include in your grocery budget (cleaning supplies? pet food? eating out? paper goods?... Thu, 1 Jun 2017 11:01:20 EST Thursday's for Thinking Like, think before you eat. Think about exercising, and then DO IT! Think about how you can get in some small (or big, but small is good, too) movements throughout the day. Think about how great you feel with this Way of Eating and this Way of Life! And think thankful thoughts on Thursday, too.

Today should be nice and calm. I need it! Magadelena went home yesterday, which involved about five or six hours on my part. Getting discharged from the hospital always takes so long, and ex... Your mission for today is to spend 15 minutes decluttering your dining room. It does not matter what you get rid of, just get rid of anything that does not belong in the dining room. Once again start with a trash bag and toss! If you still have time, then grab things that need to be put away and... Thu, 1 Jun 2017 09:11:45 EST June Team Challenge: Liberality! Wed, 31 May 2017 22:29:27 EST Wednesday Whopper---and NOT the Burger! Today is a good day to do something stupendous. Do a whopper of something. Think I will try a new recipe for ling cod and some zucchini zoodle nests, perhaps with a poached egg in the middle. Something different and wonderful Wed, 31 May 2017 10:01:32 EST wellness wednesday Hoping for healing today. Hannah woke up puking this am :( We have to leave in 2 nights to go to ETSU for the weekend for her Drumline Practice! She needs to get better! She's stressing, which isn't helping her any :(

Woke up with both eyes itching like mad. Been making fat bombs with stevia, which is questionable for me, so I guess no more stevia. the ones I made yesterday were w/o any sweetener. hoping it's not the cocoa butter (which I can use on my skin w/o any issues).... Wed, 31 May 2017 10:01:27 EST Tired Tuesday I'm dragging today. I went to bed pretty much as soon as I got back from taking Bakomeza some money so she could eat at the hospital last night, but didn't get to sleep until after 1:30. Slept really well until about 6:00, got up about 7:00. Not nearly enough sleep for me!

ESL this morning, and that's the only thing that's officially on my list for the day. I will probably go to the hospital first to check on Bakomeza and her grandmother, Magadelena, though I may just text B instea... Tue, 30 May 2017 09:37:57 EST Eating Enough and Staying within Macros - Help! I just feel so confused. Being hungry so rarely, I just about have to force myself to eat.

I love my protein foods - meat, poultry fish, eggs - but if I am to keep my caloric intake at a reasonable amount, my protein numbers end up too high. If I add fats, then my fats see over 70 or even 75%. I imagine it could even go up over 80%.

I read that if one's goal is to lose weight, fats shouldn't be so high; in fact, fat intake "should" be on the lesser end of the range. ... Mon, 29 May 2017 12:10:14 EST Monday Mischief! Okay, its a holiday. What are you doing for FUN? I don't have anything planned, so going to have to figure out a plan! Enjoy the day! Mon, 29 May 2017 08:53:15 EST Sunny Sunday! Another beautiful day here. Sunny, blue sky, high of 80. And no breeze at the moment, so I should probably be out spraying the weeds. I'm going to wait, though, since I'll be working in the garden-to-be and handling the bedding plants, and I'd hate to do that with any weed killer on me! I know, I know - gardeners do it all the time. But that's my excuse for today and I'm sticking with it!

I should be able to get the last of the rocks moved out of the area that I'm going to turn int... Sun, 28 May 2017 09:45:12 EST Stretching Saturday I’ve been reading Aging Backwards by Miranda Esmonde-White and got up this morning and did some of the stretches she illustrates. From my reading I’ve learned that strength training and repetitive cardio contracts and shortens the muscles. Over time this can cause muscle imbalance, put stress on your joints and cause compression and pain. It’s equally important to stretch and lengthen your muscles and be flexible. I’ve done a few of her short videos on Youtube and they have helped my low back... Sat, 27 May 2017 09:32:18 EST Fit Friday! Not much planned for today. Mom's CPA called last night and said her tax returns are done. We're supposed to go in at 10:30 to pick them up. That's it.

I'm still in a-fib, so I sent a message to my doctor on the patient portal thing. If I don't hear back by about noon, I'll call. In the meantime, I'm taking it really easy, which does not please Russell. He doesn't think a-fib is much of an excuse for not taking him for a walk.

It rained last night. Long and hard. Thu, 25 May 2017 12:39:08 EST WoW! It's Wednesday! In my case, the WoW stands for World of Warcraft, of course. Last vacation day of the Fiscal Year. Man, I just LOVE these Wednesdays off! It's my perfect work schedule!

Not much on the big plan. Gonna try to help Max finish moving his stuff in - it always takes weeks to find homes for all his things!

I've also got a couple of little house projects I'd like to finish. Got almost all of my "errands" done yesterday. (What's the word for lots of little piddly things that need to be done but can mostly be done at home? They'd be errands if they involved running around all over town.) Some little ones, like paying a few bills, making some phone calls, righting a letter, printing off a few things, stuff like that. And some bigger ones like taking things to Mom and staying to play some games, two hours of moving rocks in my border, and going to Book Club and the ... Tue, 23 May 2017 10:14:37 EST Make It So Monday! I have a whole bunch of little things that I've been putting off that need to be done. Little as in things that will probably take 5 minutes or so to to (like call the dentist and schedule an appointment), not necessarily little as in unimportant. This morning I made a written list of them (as opposed to a mental quasi-list) and I'm going to get a bunch of them done! There are 9 of them that fall in the 5-minute range, and I WILL GET THEM ALL DONE TODAY! Make it so, MAW. Make it so!
<BR... Mon, 22 May 2017 10:16:19 EST Swampy Sunday It rained last night. It started after sunset and ended before sunrise. Just like Camelot. Seems to have been quite a bit of rain, too. Good for the garden and lawn, not so good for the rivers that are already flooding. But we sure do have some spectacular waterfalls when the snow is melting and it's raining and they're letting extra water out of the reservoirs to prevent or reduce later flooding!

Dinner last night was good. Spent about an hour sweeping my patio for the first time this year. It looks so much better! I might actually use it this summer, if I keep it clean. Sat, 20 May 2017 10:31:20 EST Modification of Nutrition on SPARKPEOPLE. Help! Hey guys! I replied on another post similar to this positing but I just want to make sure that somebody can help me with this because this part always confuses me. I just went on here and modify my carb intake to be 20g - 30g a day but how do you determine how much your fat intake should be? At the moment, it said's my fat intake is 47 - 96 grams of fat per day. Also, does counting calories and other nutrients still a priority on a Low-Carb diet, or should counting carbs and your fat intake ... Fri, 19 May 2017 23:43:59 EST Fantabulous Friday! The sun is shining, the sky is blue, there's just a slight breeze, and it's supposed to get up into the high 60s today. A fantabulous Friday indeed!

Got pretty much everything done yesterday I had planned. Won $4 at Hand and Foot, and didn't eat any of the big spread of delicious looking stuff they had out. I played with a bunch of women I hadn't seen in about two months. One of them looked me up and down and said "You are looking great!" Another looked at me puzzledly and asked, "... Fri, 19 May 2017 10:06:14 EST Thankful Thursday! Couldn't think of a good descriptor for today, so decided that it must be a good day to work on gratitude. So much to be thankful for!

I keep my calendar on my computer and tend not to look at it, though I do have it send me reminders of things. I got a call yesterday from someone asking me whether I needed a ride to Hand and Foot (Canasta) this afternoon. Oops! Forgot all about it. They serve a "light" lunch first, then cards start at 12:30. I find it's a lot easier to just eat be... Thu, 18 May 2017 09:36:15 EST Brrrrr! Wednesday And I planted my tomatoes, eggplants, basil and zucchini a couple of days ago. Not sure how cold it got last night. They were predicting a low of 34 but they were also predicting lots of wind, and wasn't windy for very long. Definitely down in the 30s, though. I put a couple of those big plastic bins/totes over the eggplants and two of the tomatoes, with a gallon of water on top to keep them from blowing away, but couldn't figure out what to put on the others. I'll go out in a couple of hours... Wed, 17 May 2017 10:04:59 EST FYI - butter on sale! Butter has been at least $3 per pound around here for several months. Tue, 16 May 2017 10:23:18 EST Odd and confusing Does this make sense to anyone here working strictly with low carb? It was in one of the topics I visited here in Spark. Maybe it works for some, I don't know.....I just know it would pile back on the pounds if I did it. It was for breaking plateaus. This was what was quoted........

My dietitian says to have a double carb day, which means about 400 grams of good carbs in the week. Headed to Kauai for a few days, some deep sea fishing, sight seeing. This is a small, very laid back island, so hoping to just chill and explore some of the local stuff. I've been continuing on target for my eating. I don't think about it a whole lot anymore. Coming up on a benchmark that I have to get past. I usually do great for about 1.5 years on ANY weight loss program I've followed. Will soon be approaching that. This time ... Bakomeza cooked and prepared everything, with just some (OK, a lot!) of supervision from me. She was amazed when I told her that that used to be a standard evening meal in America - a ... Sat, 13 May 2017 10:10:00 EST Grok Friday! The "word of the day" today is grok. Anyone else remember it from Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land? A few memorable quotes -

“I do know that the slickest way to lie is to tell the right amount of truth--then shut up.”

“If you've got the truth you can demonstrate it. Talking doesn't prove it.”

“I never do anything I don't want to do. Nor does anyone, but in my case I am always aware of it.”

One thing that probably everyone groks is Friday! Fri, 12 May 2017 11:45:21 EST Yyyyiiipppeeee! Thursday! I got to show up to do IT all over again! Lucky! Lucky! Hugs to surround us with Energy to LIVE! Thu, 11 May 2017 07:42:30 EST Wednesday Off to jury selection! Wish me luck, though I'm not sure what that means. I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. The trial is supposed to last one to two weeks, which I assume means something big. Wed, 10 May 2017 09:29:33 EST Tuesday Where is everyone? It's after noon even here in the west, and no thread started for today.

Took Mariam in for an Upper G.I. Endoscopy (a licensed driver over 18 had to stay there the whole time) this morning. Sun, 7 May 2017 10:25:03 EST Springlike Sunday Not necessarily in the "best" sense, but definitely springlike. It rained yesterday and last night and is wet and gray and windy today. But that's ok. Nothing on the calendar.

Have a wonderful day and enjoy the May flowers that the April showers brought! Sun, 7 May 2017 10:19:22 EST Allergic... to carbs? So I noticed something tonight. Yesterday my back didn't hurt much at all - totally great day - best in nearly a year!

Tonight I ate some hot dogs that were apparently not low carb. I didn't think about my cafeteria changing brands of their hot dogs but apparently these have 20g carbs each! Sat, 6 May 2017 07:36:33 EST Sensible Saturday I was going to say that yesterday (Friday) was a day of bad choices, but when I got to thinking about it, there were really only a few bad choices. A couple of them were humdingers, but it was still just a few. Mostly I made good choices all day long. And I will go back to making good choices today! In fact, I've already done so, by realizing that yesterday wasn't all that bad. And I (me, myself - it's hard to put "I" in all caps) wasn't bad. I just made some bad choices. Absolutely nothing t... Sat, 6 May 2017 03:12:24 EST Finally Friday This post is all about Bakomeza and her problems, so feel free to skip it.

Bakomeza and her support system (parents, me, Refugee Center/school liaison, maybe brother and/or BIL) are meeting with the principal at 12:30. She has to either ask to be allowed back in school to finish the semester (though it may be too late - they may say she was out for too long unexcused) or withdraw. Period. End of discussion. Just being here is a win!

I take Mariam in for a CT scan this morning, then probably over to Mom's to work on her freezer and to walk Sandy this afternoon. The lawn needs mowed, too, and the dishes need washed, and it must be time to do laundry because I'm almost out of undies. Lots to do today, but none of it difficult or critical. A good day. Wed, 3 May 2017 08:58:04 EST Insomnia Tuesday I woke up at 02:30, about an hour and a half ago, and no sign of wanting to sleep more. I know I need more sleep, but not looking good. The killer is that for the last several work days, I've been literally dozing off in the afternoons. I went to sleep fairly easily last night, but now it's gone.

So I figured, what the hey, I'll just get up and do something tedious for a while. And start the daily thread. He threw up in the bed this morning. About 5:30, which is really last night. Except when a dog throws up in your bed, you tend to get up. At least I did. Can't even go back to bed, since the sheets and the mattress pad are in the washer. The sheets are no problem, but the heavy quilted mattress pad is a real pain to wash. And much much worse to dry! However, I heard him throw up, so didn't find out about it accidentally, and I got it cleaned up immediately, and it was... Fri, 28 Apr 2017 10:24:21 EST Thoughts on fiber? I am not concerned about "going", I don't usually have too many problems there, but I find I stall when I don't eat veggies (aka salad or celery, etc), but like yesterday I just didn't want any (it was a stressful day at work). I know there are no essential carbs, but find it interesting that I lose as I eat veggies, and stall when I don't... so it has to be the fiber?

Some people use oat fiber for cooking (not sure I want to go there, it makes me nervous with my allergies), but I... Fri, 28 Apr 2017 09:56:15 EST 10 pounds gone :) I finally hit the 10 pound mark yesterday :) I have been trying intermittent fasting and that seems to have helped. One more pound to my first goal!! Fri, 28 Apr 2017 09:01:02 EST Thoughtful Thursday! On the one hand, it's great when this way of life becomes so automatic, so second nature, that we don't have to think about it at all. It's just the way we eat and the way we live. On the other hand, not thinking about it can lead to carb creep, to slight strayings from our path, and to missing insights along the way.

What can you think about or pay attention to that will help you on your journey to recovery and health?

Darn it! Hi all, this is my fourth day in, and I already have a problem. But just so you know, I have been around the block for some years now. Thanks to a grastic bypass five years ago,I have had some success. I found myself slipping into the carbs and redirected this into the low carb diet. I am also hoping that I can loose the 30 lbs I gained back (plus another 20).

is the problem, I need potassium. I get nasty cramping in toes and legs if I do not get it. Pickles and b... You're pretty special, you know, just as you are!

Yesterday was sort of a bust, what with spending the day at the hospital with Mariam. It actually went pretty well, though. Bakomeza decided to take the day off from school to be with her mom, though she wasn't actually with her mom much of the time. We had to be there two hours before... Tue, 25 Apr 2017 10:28:29 EST Monday Magic! The magic happens cuz hubby goes back to work today after taking the last few days off!! Woo hoo!! I don't know what I'll do when he retires and is home all the time......sigh. And I used to look forward to his retirement. Oh, well. A couple more years to figure out what is going to happen on this front.
Last nites dinner was light. Poached some eggs in boullion and that was it. It was very tasty and could easily be my breakfast. I did retain more fluid last nite and am pretty ... Mon, 24 Apr 2017 08:37:42 EST Serendipitous Sunday! What a great day today! It's supposed to warmish (64), the sun is shining (or was a minute ago), and it rained early this morning so I can't dig dandelions!

And you know that old theory about calories in equals calories out? Well, when you're eating low carb, the calories go out in ways other than just exercise, so more calories can go in than "they" say are going out. Way to go, low carb!

I slept really well last night. Like until 8:30 this morning. And Russell let me,... Sun, 23 Apr 2017 11:08:00 EST Super Duper Saturday! Sunny today, high of 67. A glorious day!

Or maybe I should have called it Science Saturday. There will be Marches for Science all over the country and the world today. I'll be in one, myself. First time I've ever "marched" for something. No idea what to expect.

This afternoon I'm taking Bakomeza's brother, John (it's really some long hard name and he decided he'd rather go with John) to Mom's house to weed the garden. We'll see how it goes. I'm sure Bakomeza would be ha... Sat, 22 Apr 2017 09:15:06 EST Freakin' Great Friday! Happy Friday, everyone! And it's going to be a great one, right? Let's make it so!

I'll have to work it during my free time today. ESL this morning, then someone is coming over to measure the house this afternoon for new siding. It desperately needs replaced. One of the things I knew when I bought the place a couple of years ago. A Russell Walk or two and some housekeeping before the siding guy gets here. And that's about it for my day, in terms of formal planned stuff.

... Fri, 21 Apr 2017 09:28:31 EST Thirsty Thursday! Got to work to get in lots of water today. Or other liquids like home made bone broth or tea or herbal tea, but water is best. I definitely see a difference on the scale when I drink more water.

Hand and Foot (Canasta) all afternoon. They'll serve a "light lunch" but I'll eat at home before I go. I find that it's a lot easier to just not eat anything at something like this than to only eat the right things. Even if I know that there are right things to eat. It's much easier to make... Thu, 20 Apr 2017 09:24:55 EST Motivation! What do you do to motivate yourself? Hi guys! So I desperately need some motivation. I completely lost control today on my Low Carb Diet, which I should have no reason to do terribly at all because all I really have is Salad, Vegetables, and tons of protein in my Refrigerator and Freezer. I was wondering, how do you motivate yourself to stay on a Low Carb Diet? What do you do on a daily basis to stay within your routine? I also could use words of encouragement as well :) Wed, 19 Apr 2017 19:20:18 EST How do you stay within your budget on Low Carb? Hi everybody! So I started on a Low Carb, High Fat diet but I feel like I am having trouble budgeting during the week. On Saturday, I bought everything that I would need for my Low Carb Diet and my boyfriend and I ended up spending 179 dollars on food for just the week. Now, I know most of this food is probably for me because David has his bread and his pasta, and I am all about the protein, vegetables and salad but I was wondering, for those who are Low-Carbing it especially, how do you budg... Wed, 19 Apr 2017 19:16:16 EST WHatzup Wednesday!! Whats on your *plate* today? I'm going to the casino with some new friends from my new neighborhood! This is just a ladies day and I'm really looking forward to it! I haven't developed friends in the last 20 years and am so in need of a ladies support system. Very new for me and a positive thing!~
Food wise I'm on track! Have been losing slowly and just a couple pounds from my low two years ago and then moving on down. Just 20 or so left to go before I reassess, but really don... Wed, 19 Apr 2017 10:02:20 EST Terrific Tuesday! How's your mom doing, Leslie? How are YOU doing?

Yesterday started out raining, but it quit by about 8 am and was mostly sunny the rest of the day Bakomeza and I got in about an hour and a half of digging weeds. She's from Uganda, you know, and didn't understand why I was having her dig up all those pretty yellow flowers in the lawn! She pointed out how much prettier the lawn was where she hadn't dug up the flowers.

It's raining again today, but I think it means it. Look... Tue, 18 Apr 2017 10:12:47 EST Quiet Monday It's gray and drizzling today, a good day to just putz around the house. Which sound delightful, actually. I think the drizzle is supposed to stop this afternoon, though, so I may get out and do something. Don't know what.

Easter dinner was nice. The casserole turned out ok, as did my Tomato Tulips. Took Sandy and Russell for a short walk. Mom says that Sandy is having trouble getting into the car. She's definitely old and slowing down but still loves to go for walks. I've been tr... Mon, 17 Apr 2017 10:02:56 EST Eagerly Easter! A Happy and Blessed Easter to all for whom Easter is a special holy day. And a happy and blessed Sunday to everyone!

Had a good time at the Easter Egg Hunt yesterday. Then we went to the Falls ("The Niagara of the West") and then to the animal shelter. I think the kids had fun. I did, anyway. The egg decorating, which would have been with a different bunch of people, didn't happen. Turns out someone was coming over to help them with their Green Card applications, which was definite... Sun, 16 Apr 2017 10:06:19 EST Sunny Saturday Hope your day is as sunny as mine! :) it's so pretty out today! We are going to be smoking a beef brisket today, so nervous! I will be cleaning the kitchen/doing some prep cooking since tomorrow is Easter and will be busy most of the day
Sat, 15 Apr 2017 09:52:43 EST Sunny Saturday! High of 56, but sunny and nice out. Which is a good thing, since there's an Easter Egg Hunt at City Park this morning. They're dividing kids 0 - 10 into four or five age groups, and hiding 1000 candy-filled plastic eggs for each group! Not sure how they'll organize it, but will find out. I'm taking my Iraqi friend Marwah and her 2 and 3 year olds.

This afternoon I'm taking a bunch of hard-boiled eggs over to my Congolese family and teaching them how to die Easter Eggs. Also taking... Sat, 15 Apr 2017 09:45:51 EST Frustrating Friday It's 3 a.m. and I've been awake for 45 minutes with no getting back to sleep in sight. No clue why. Maybe I'll go take a hot bath. Fri, 14 Apr 2017 06:00:06 EST Thinner Thursday Maybe, or maybe not. If the scale is moving down, Way to Go! If not, remember all the health benefits of our way of eating. And all the yummy, delicious "unhealthy" foods we get to eat guilt-free! There's a lot more to eating low carb than what the scale says.

High yesterday was 71. High today is supposed to be 53. Sigh. And it's supposed to rain later today and tomorrow. High tomorrow of 43. Sure am glad I got the backyard mowed yesterday, and spent another hour or so digging weed... Thu, 13 Apr 2017 10:16:55 EST Wishful Wednesday! That is, hoping that your day is full of wishes that come true! Which is actually the definition of wishful, but that's how I'm using it today!

Absolutely positively nothing on my calendar for today. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Wonderful!

It's supposed to get up to 70 today, and the sun is shining, which should make it a good day to get out and dig dandelions. Lots of dandelions. LOTS of dandelions! Also, of course, a couple of Russell Walks. Who knows, I might even walk over to... Wed, 12 Apr 2017 10:02:41 EST Tantalizing Tuesday Hope your day is Tantalizing!

having or exhibiting something that provokes or arouses expectation, interest, or desire, especially that which remains unobtainable or beyond one's reach:

I am going to try a new recipe today, and pretty excited about it! ;) I can't wait to see how it tastes and if it works well with my allergies! :) Tue, 11 Apr 2017 08:59:43 EST Frustrated Remember I said there was a challenge at work - that everyone who wanted to particpate, paid an entry fee and winner took all?

Well, I've been doing my "thang" and weighing in at work and what have you, but I haven't heard anything at work. I contacted the person who is responsible for this and she said the challenge was supposed to end before Spring Break but another teacher wants to continue until the end of the school year! The nurse, however, says that I'm the only one weighing... Mon, 10 Apr 2017 17:25:32 EST Electrifying Monday! In a good way, I hope!

There's a yellow light on one of the GFCI outlets in the kitchen. It came on when I plugged in my Instant Pot, and the IP didn't come on. I moved the IP to a different outlet, and it worked fine for a while then quit. As did the lights on the microwave and the stove. I tried to find the circuit breakers for the kitchen - especially the GFCI outlet - but that outlet seems to be on the same breaker as the fridge. I'm hoping to get Terry to come over today and ... Mon, 10 Apr 2017 10:24:14 EST Splendid Sunday! The sun is shining, there's a robin right outside my window, and I feel much better than I did yesterday. What a splendid day! Sun, 9 Apr 2017 09:54:24 EST Commitment I am making a commitment to track three meals a day this week. I need to figure out what calorie range and carb/protein/fat percentages work best for me. And I need accountability :) Sun, 9 Apr 2017 09:00:25 EST Surely I'll be stupid Saturday Another power outage sent me to bed with the sunset, then woke me by coming back on shortly after 11. Now I can't get back to sleep.

These power outages plus the resulting insomnia are going to kill me
Sat, 8 Apr 2017 04:33:33 EST Frightful Friday Just got an emergency alert about the high wind warning, schools canceled and people advised not to travel. Power has been out for at least an hour, and I can't get back to sleep. Fri, 7 Apr 2017 08:28:35 EST Thankful Thursday Isn't it odd that the more we have to be thankful for, the harder it is to see them? How about it, what are you thankful for today?

Among the things I'm thankful for today are my health, knees in pretty good shape, Russell (my dog), getting my taxes done today for free (and finding my SS card last night!), and, of course, all of you!

Taxes this morning, then over to Mom's to take her to Grocery Outlet (3 lbs blueberries for $3.50!), and probably Alberston's (24 oz mushro... Thu, 6 Apr 2017 10:17:38 EST Weather Wednesday Hear it's supposed to be bad some places. DB#1 said the rain was coming down 4 to 5 inches per hour yesterday, with winds 40 - 50 mph. DB#2 said they had 10 inches of rain in 10 hours. Ugh. Stay safe, everyone!

High today here of 67, light wind, blue skies. I'll take living in a desert! Wed, 5 Apr 2017 10:19:37 EST Plugra Whoever told me about this, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart!! LOL

Feeling slightly better this morning, more energy than yesterday, but not my normal energy, but my voice is half gone. had some bone broth with chicken for breakfast. it was just enough for then, but now plowing through the coffee hoping it helps my throat.

Enjoying the roses I bought myself last week, they are on my desk in the sunshine and so pretty! :) I've been married almost 24 years and very seldom does he bring me flowers, a few we... Tue, 4 Apr 2017 10:56:03 EST Monday Made a big batch of bone broth yesterday. It's still working away, actually. I put some bones I'd saved in the freezer (chicken and pork and maybe some turkey) in my Instant Pot and have had it simmering away for about 16 hours now. I'll give it several more hours. I'm having a big mug of it for breakfast. I even added some plain gelatin powder to it for some extra oomph. Anyone remember back about three or four years when the thing was to have gelatin every day? Not Jello, but just plain old... Mon, 3 Apr 2017 09:41:08 EST Excellent podcast I think I mentioned this podcast a while back that I was listening to about gut health. It was so informative that I wanted to share it in case it can help someone. It's two parts. You can follow these links and scroll to the bottom of the page to listen (the text is just an overview), or if you have a podcast app on your phone like Stitcher you can search for The Chalene Show and find the episodes with Dr. Zach Bush. Don't be intimidated by the length. I like to listen to podcasts in the mor... Sun, 2 Apr 2017 16:31:40 EST Sincerely Sunday! I guess I put most of you off by calling yesterday's thread Sunday. Hope to get more activity today.

Nothing planned for today except a long hot steamy shower. And a Russell Walk. I'm feeling a bit better, but still get very tired very quickly.

Was going to go out and dig dandelions today, but it involves sitting on the ground and not a good idea since it rained a bit overnight.

Down .4 pound for the week, which I consider a big success since I know that my ... Sounds like a perfect month to focus on tracking and accountability!
248
Not surprisingly, Truthfulness as a virtue is very similar to what we modern folk call Self-Esteem. Sat, 1 Apr 2017 10:52:41 EST Suddenly Sunday! And not a single thing on the calendar for today! Well, except that Terry will be coming over to nail a couple of shingles back on the roof. It was a rough winter.

I hadn't planned on grocery shopping until Wednesday, when the new ads come out,, but may go today. I need more veggies to make more chicken soup. I could probably squeak by, especially with a quick visit to Mom to get some veggies out of her freezer. We'll see how energetic I feel later.

Debb, I remember you... Sat, 1 Apr 2017 09:43:18 EST Finally Friday!!!! Hope everyone had a good week! Been really focusing on food and getting some exercise (did WATP 3 miles again last night) and am rewarded with the scale finally moving down. I also cut out alcohol, so maybe that was a big part of my stall. Will see what monday brings

This weekend is super busy. To bed about 7;30 tonight (I hope!) up at 1:30 out of the house by 2 am, to drive to a college for a tour and we have to be there by 8;30. We are both stressing as it's in a different t... Fri, 31 Mar 2017 09:47:12 EST Thursday Gee, thanks, ladies! All that talk about being sick and all. You must be contagious. Now I've got it! Or something, anyway. I think it's just a cold.

I had a haircut scheduled for this morning but I think I'll cancel it. Not fair to Sherry to be breathing germs in her face.

Bakomeza texted me this morning about 6:00 to say her mom doesn't feel good. Says she's running a fever and has a headache. I'll go over this morning. She had her spleen removed last year and I know... Thu, 30 Mar 2017 09:24:28 EST Wonderful Wednesday! Not much special going on today. I'll take Mariam to the doctor this afternoon. I'm teaching her how to take the free transportation, but she's not comfortable with that because she doesn't speak much English. But we're working on it.

The wonderful part (or one wonderful thing, anyway, but I'm sure there are many) of today is that Terry is going to come over and patch my roof. A couple of shingle tabs blew off in the rough weather this winter. The wonderful part of that is that I h... Wed, 29 Mar 2017 10:59:56 EST Small Weight Gain... Hi All;

I started LCHF about 3 weeks ago. I lost 7 pounds the first 10 days :) I saw a reference to 'The Diet Doctor', checked out the website, and decided to try the 2 week challenge, starting with dinner last Sunday (Mar 26). I also had some white wine the same day. Monday morning my weight was up 2 pounds and won't budge.
Was it the wine? The very high fat on the challenge (everything seems to be swimming in butter and heavy cream) ? Or am I just impatient??
Wed, 29 Mar 2017 09:41:32 EST Typical Tuesday Nothing much planned for today. Which is not a bad thing at all! ESL this morning, then stop at Albertson's and pick up a few things for Mom, then over to her house to walk her dog. Hand and Foot (Canasta) this afternoon, then I'll probably give Bakomeza a ride home so she can help me talk with her parents. Maybe there's more planned for today than I thought!

However a typical a Tuesday it is, let's all see what we can do to make it a Super Tuesday! (But without all of the electio... Tue, 28 Mar 2017 10:01:10 EST Special Monday! Special for me, anyway, because it's my birthday! I hope it's special for you, too, but you'll have to find your own reason.

Book Club this noon, at Perkins. I'll probably have an omelet with salad/and veggies. Or I might just have a big salad. Something on plan, anyway.

Mom's taking me out to dinner tonight. Not sure where. I'm thinking prime rib sounds pretty good. I'll ask around at noon and see if anyone has any suggestions.

Other than that, a Russell Wal... Mon, 27 Mar 2017 09:42:26 EST Sleepy Sunday Not sure what's going on, but I have my suspicions.

Got to bed last night about 10:30, which wasn't easy. I probably would have just stayed in my chair all night if the overhead light weren't on. Woke up about 6:30 to go potty and turn on the heat, then right back to sleep. Russell woke me up about 8:00. I fed him and put him out and then back in and right back to sleep. Woke up about 11:00, more or less ready to get up. I did get up, anyway, ready or not.

Something sim... Sun, 26 Mar 2017 14:25:51 EST Joining Just wanted to introduce myself. Today is day 3 for me on a low-carb lifestyle. This is not the first time that I've done low-carb but it's been decades since I've been low-carb. This time it's doctor prescribed. Sat, 25 Mar 2017 21:40:43 EST Newbie to HFLC - I love carbs-need to lose weight Hi everyone, I am 43 years old and I have been trying to eat what I have considered "healthy", but I can't seem to lose any weight and keep it off. I'm terrified to eat so much fat, but I don't know what else to do. I need some encouragement that eating HFLC will actually help me lose weight. I'm also worried about carb cravings.
