SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard We will discuss low carb lifestyles (including Atkins,Protein Power, South Beach and other doctor-recommended low carb plans), trade low carb recipes and team up to do this together! SparkPeople Living Low Carb (Atkins and other Plans) Team Messageboard Feel the Fear October Challenge Boo! Halloween, roller coasters, zombie movies - we like being scared. Sometimes. When we know, rationally, that we're safe. So why do we let fears stop us from succeeding, when, if we look at them rationally, we know we'll be ok?

This month's theme is to look at what it is that's keeping you from succeeding - with weight loss, with health, with your job, whatever. But especially with a low carb lifestyle. Is it fear of success? (What will happen if you do succeed?) Fear of failur... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 19:16:46 EST Tuesday Try to remember the kind of September...

Remember that song from The Fantastiks? I decided eons ago that if I ever married, it would be in September - because of that song. Didn't happen - in September or any other month. I had my wedding all planned out, too - except for the groom. Fall leaves and chrysanthemums in those glorious reds and scarlets and gold and yellows. Who cares that I'm allergic to the mums! Just load up on antihistimines. Oh well.

Slept in this morni... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 10:50:43 EST Monday Wow, did we all sleep in today, or what?

There are a million things on my to-do list this week, so I'm making this short and calling it to-done.

Have a great day, all! Mon, 29 Sep 2014 12:44:28 EST Sunday Going strong. Still a bit tired from fighting the infection but I am finding myself in better spirits and the nausea is not as bad as it has been. Able to keep everything down thus far. Will most likely be called off tonight due to low census in the hospital so, while I enjoy the money, I am looking forward to having the night off to spend with DH and not going back til Saturday night. I did join 3 DietBet challenges last night. One started 4 days ago, one starts Oct 7, and the other starts t... Sun, 28 Sep 2014 05:17:40 EST Thanksgiving I know, it's two months away, but MrThing was asking how to handle it, and I thought others might be wondering the same thing. More much closer to the big day, of course.

I have eaten a full Thanksgiving dinner for about the past ten years or so. I've even had a houseful of guests most years. It's not hard, but it does take some planning. And I'm sure it helps that I'm not with family so I don't have folks telling me that we HAVE to have Aunt Susie's candied sweet potatoes and Uncl... Sat, 27 Sep 2014 16:49:20 EST Saturday Yesterday ended up not being quite as choppy as I had expected. I took Goldie back to the shelter to see the vet (still has diarrhea) and while we were talking to the vet a staff member came in to talk to Virgil (shelter manager) about a couple who had surrendered four cats because of allergies, had their allergies under control, and wanted one of the cats back. They wanted Goldie! So lots of talking between the couple and Virgil, Virgil and the vet, the couple and the vet, and just about eve... Sat, 27 Sep 2014 09:16:37 EST Induction/Phase 1 questions before I get started I'm pretty clear on some of the Phase 1/Induction rules. I see that 20NC or less is my goal for the Phase 1 program and apparently I am supposed to do this until I am within 15 pounds of my goal. Well, that seems like I'll be in Phase 1 for a darned long time. I'd rather reach my goal weight quickly to stay motivated, rather than drag it out another year doing Phase 2 instead. I've been closer to Phase 3 in my current LC plan for NCs.

What I am stuck on are some of the finer po... Fri, 26 Sep 2014 18:51:30 EST TGIF! What no thread yet?? I'm never first!

I made it to Friday, and worked like crazy at a client's workplace last night so I get the whole weekend off (from him). Tonight I have no plans after work except for a face plant in bed. Woohoo! The new GM at work is still marinating in cologne and I'm going to have to tell him that I am allergic to it. The scent itself isn't bad at all - there's just too much of it and I'm allergic to something in it. Ugh.

Another long time... (aka Sweetisha1) Hope you have a wonderful day! Thu, 25 Sep 2014 10:13:50 EST New and Hello...I am a carb addict. I have been one my whole life. I can look back to when I was a kid and I was a little carb addict. Now it's 40 years later and I am still a carb addict. It's starting to take it's toll on my health as I am facing a future of diabetes if I don't do something now. It's not too late...yet.

I am on the path to educate myself and to figure out what I need to do to change. Wed, 24 Sep 2014 16:08:35 EST Wednesday Feeling much better today! I talked to my doctor before leaving work Tuesday morning and he said I had everything under control for the insect bite but if it had not improved by Friday morning to call him. I took my doxycycline on an empty stomach - STUPID me. After I expelled it the way it went in I ate something and took another. Everything is MUCH better this morning. I feel amazing - besides starving. I didn't realize it but all I ate yesterday was the Atkins Sesame Chicken and Veggies an... Wed, 24 Sep 2014 09:52:28 EST Hello...New to the team but not to low carb. I love eating low carb and was looking for an active team. My husband and I have eaten this way for the last 2 years and he is completely off blood pressure meds now. Low carb has also helped me curb daily migraines and has eliminated hot flashes. For me, sugar is evil. Lol Wed, 24 Sep 2014 06:46:49 EST How many carbs should I eat when first starting I am just starting low carb eating and I am interested in knowing how many carbs people eat at first. Do you follow net carbs or carbs. I have a big problem with binge eating at night and from what I have read the low carb eating helps in this area. I did Sugar Busters years ago and I felt great when on that program. Tue, 23 Sep 2014 21:55:46 EST low carb freezer meals Someone was looking for low carb freezer meals. Or low carb once a month cooking. Or something like that.

Anyway, there's a free e-book on the subject. Paleo Freezer Cuisines. Tue, 23 Sep 2014 19:50:20 EST Tuesday Went right to work on housework when I got up again today. It doesn't feel like I accomplished as much as yesterday, though I think I did. Just not as visible, I guess. Among the things I got done was to start assembling a box of emergency supplies. Just stuff from my pantry so far - tuna, canned chicken, ziplock bags, etc. I want to get as much as I can from stuff I already have before I start buying the other things that go in it.

I'll be working at the food pantry for a couple ... Tue, 23 Sep 2014 11:50:11 EST Parmesan Crusted Chicken

58/1/parmesan-crusted-chicken

I made this low carb by replacing the bread crumbs with about a teaspoon of Italian seasoning, it was awesome! I used about 1 pound of chicken breast, it only took about 25 minutes to bake. Mon, 22 Sep 2014 22:08:53 EST Free ebooks at Amazon - low carb and Paleo There were lots of free low carb and paleo cookbooks at Amazon today, so thought I'd go ahead and list them. Mostly paleo, but there's a lot of overlap. Don't know how long they'll stay free, and I know nothing about them, but there might be something you're interested in. And you can download them now and read them whenever. I have hundreds of cookbooks that I've done that with!

Here they are. There were a lot more than I expected.

Low carb for the perpetually stalled <... Mon, 22 Sep 2014 12:17:22 EST Monday: Make it a Happy One! Yup, didn't want to get out of bed this morning, so I'm trying to get myself fired up for a Happy Monday!

Had a more relaxing weekend than I was expecting and actually got some of the home remodeling project tools and junk our of my sanctuary! I feel much better already! It will be weeks if not months before we tackle the next ceiling project, so WHY did I let all the tools take up valuable real estate all these weeks?! Wishful thinking I guess. I was hoping to just keep moving alo... Mon, 22 Sep 2014 09:12:19 EST Keto diet questions I posted this on the Keto Clarity team but figured I would post this here too since this team is much more active. I have read some post by others here that are on a keto diet and was hoping you could shed some light.

I have been researching keto and I would like to give it a try. I used the keto calculator on the website and I'm scratching my head over my results. I have over 100 pounds to loose and my body fat percentage is pretty high but could this be correct?
... Sun, 21 Sep 2014 13:05:04 EST Sunday Sunday School and working in the church nursery this morning. Only stayed for half of Sunday School though - I started on a coughing jag and left. Had planned to play bridge this afternoon, but two of the four players can't make it. So I'll go to the animal shelter and play with dogs and cats instead. :)

Another beautiful day! Maybe I'll do some yard work when I get back. Sun, 21 Sep 2014 12:46:23 EST Coconut Oil Last year I began researching the benefits and culinary uses of coconut oil.
I am a massage therapist and had run out of massage cream and tried coconut oil.
It is now my go to oil for everything!
My wood furniture has never looked better.
Cutting boards are like new.
Love to cook with the oil.
Other things I use it for are: makeup removal, moisturizer, body oil, lip gloss, cuticle softener, oil squeaky hinges, detail my car, and the list goes on and on. <BR... Sat, 20 Sep 2014 19:10:35 EST Zucchini Not really a recipe.

I've gotten some great big zucchini at the Farmers Market. I cut a chunk off of the end and grate it using the big holes on my grater. I suppose it's really more shredded than grated. I mostly use it in two ways.

1. I add it to soup. It thickens the soup up nicely.

2. I fry it and some onion in coconut butter and then add some eggs and scramble it all together. Some diced red bell pepper adds some nice color if I happen to think about it. ... Sat, 20 Sep 2014 17:17:04 EST Saturday Looks like it will be a nice day today. I'll spend most of the morning at the library supervising the Read to a Dog program, then I may go to the animal shelter and do some reading to dogs myself. I really enjoyed it on Wednesday.

Have a great day and a great weekend! Sat, 20 Sep 2014 08:04:33 EST Just Started Low Carbing this Year. Tips anyone? Hi Team! 213

After 'killing' myself eating 'healthy' and exercising for the past 6 years and not getting consistent results, I was tres frustrated.

Anyways, earlier this year, I started eating low carb, moderate protein and high-ish Fat and that, along with some other stuff, seems to have been the most consistent thing so far. Lost 38 lbs this year!
334

Here is my basic plan:

Low Carb - No starchy carbs, sugar, high s... Fri, 19 Sep 2014 11:00:28 EST FRIDAY Guess whose landlord wants to sell the house?
Our lease is until next August (2015) so they can't FORCE us out.

They own both sides of the semi-detached (like a side-by-side duplex), and our side is much nicer, so I have heard. I got a brief message from the estate agent, via hubby, so will call her for more details this morning,

That said, apparently the landlords have offered us the other side (the current tenant, by my guess, are not good -- the back yard has be... Fri, 19 Sep 2014 03:49:15 EST Thursday Got the stuff the handyman needs to finish putting up the grow lights and the shelves. At least, I hope I got the right stuff. He's supposed to be here at 8:00.

Decided last night to have bridge here this afternoon so I'm frantically cleaning and tidying this morning. Thanks to Woubbie it's not as bad as it could have been!

Jeanne, is it your granddaughter whose place burned down? How's she doing? Thu, 18 Sep 2014 07:50:33 EST YaHooooo! I thought it might be nice to start a Yahoo/Wahoo, whatever you want to call it thread where we can say Yahoo....about such and such. I did start a Yahoo Jar as encouraged by Woobie. But I was thinking that it would be nice to share my Yahoos with my team mates. How about it will you join me?

Today my Yahoo is that I made it to work on time after waking up late, riding the exercise bike for 30 minutes and even got to drive through Starbucks for coffee. Yahoo!

244... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 11:53:43 EST Wednesday A beautiful day today! Sun is shining, a little bit of a breeze, and it's supposed to get up to about 70 today. Which is 5-10 degrees below normal, but better than the highs in the 60s that we have been having. I surely do love having the doors and windows open.

Goldie is doing much better. His face is all cleared up and when I took him to the shelter to have his ears cleaned out again, there wasn't nearly as much crud. Something seems to be working. Now if we can only get rid of ... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 10:38:27 EST ground turkey ratatouille I just wanted to share this recipe I posted. It's basically just meat, vegetables, and a little oil. 8 net gram carbs, so I plan on eating 2 servings for a total of 16 net gram carbs daily during my induction phase. I prefer seasoning it with rosemary but you can try other things. If you want to cut back on the carbs, use half or no tomatoes (although, tomato is the essence of a ratatouille, without it it is something else). Here you go

l.a... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 02:05:09 EST 25 Ways to Get Back on Track

ion_articles.asp?id=1062&page=2

Pretty good article. I need it, except for the part about fruit, etc. Keep it low carb! Tue, 16 Sep 2014 12:44:51 EST Tuesday Good morning!

Trying to have a productive day for a change.

I'm going to a Pirates vs. Red Sox game tonight with my DH and sis and other family. Gonna be a chilly one! Should be fun, though!

Have a great day, all! Tue, 16 Sep 2014 09:41:03 EST Monday This business of waking up around 3:00 or 4:00 and not being able to get back to sleep is for the birds! Though actually, this time of year, even the birds aren't up yet.

Bridge this afternoon but that's all that's planned for today.

Hope you all have a good day and a great week. Mon, 15 Sep 2014 04:29:58 EST Salad dressing thoughts, ideas? I've been making an olive oil-apple cider vinger (ACV) vinaigrette for the last month. It fits well with the LC plan.

But lately I've grown tired of it, and the ACV is a bit too acidic to have all the time. Today I opted for the Newman's Own ranch. By count, it was 16g fat, maybe 2g protein, and 1 Net Carb. So as far as LC goes, it seems excellent. But the first ingredient is soybean oil, and lots of other things I don't like.

I started out paleo but have adapated... Sun, 14 Sep 2014 22:25:14 EST Sunday I'm off to "the farm" this morning. A 30 minute drive out of the city, more or less a farmers market but at the farm itself.

I bought a seasonal basket, so I get certain things each week. It forced me to try vegetables I hadn't tried before, which was great. This late in the season there are more and more potatoes in the pickup. I give the potatoes away, but I always feel guilty about that, like giving others the arsenic that you won't eat. Sun, 14 Sep 2014 09:04:22 EST Cordain (Paleo) and Bittman to speak at IU! Indiana University, in Bloomington (where I live) is having a themester this fall on food issues. Lots and lots of lectures, exhibits, films, programs, activities, etc. Among them are Loren Cordain (author of The Paleo Diet) on 9/23 at 7 pm and Mark Bittman on 11/4 at 7 pm. For more events, check out

If anyone is nearby and wants to go to anything, let me know. I'm planning on going to at least the Cordain and Bittman lectures,... Sat, 13 Sep 2014 09:50:34 EST Saturday Not often I start a post anymore.

It got downright cold last night. My stubbornness to not turn the heat on until October has proved to be stupid. I woke up early this morning and couldn't go back to sleep because I was cold. Even my feet, which had thick slippers on. I gave up and flipped the heat on as soon as I got up. At least the sun is out today after 3 days of gloom. Should be a beautiful day!

Have a funeral to go to in Minnesota today, driving my parents. My s... Sat, 13 Sep 2014 09:36:13 EST easy pickle recipe? I have about 12 cucumbers that I need to use and they are not the pickling type (but I heard they can still be used). Do I need to peel them?

Birgit Fri, 12 Sep 2014 16:22:20 EST Some nice recipe videos, espeically for LC newbies

/Low-Carb-Cooking-Videos.htm?nl=1

Some standards on these pages. Video how-tos always make it easier to do! Fri, 12 Sep 2014 13:00:59 EST Friday Cool and overcast. Not bad at all.

I take the poor cat to the vet today. His eyes are horrible and there's goop dripping from them down his face and it looks like the skin under the goop is raw. And yesterday I took him to the shelter because he was bleeding from his ear, but apparently only because he'd been scratching it so hard. They cleaned out his ears again - third time in less than a week - and brought out great gobs of gunk. I feel like I'm not doing a very good job of taki... Fri, 12 Sep 2014 10:23:54 EST Home-Made Mayo? Anyone have a good (and easy) recipe?

I saw one, ages ago, with raw egg. I presume that must be okay?

Thanks in advance!
Debb
XOX Fri, 12 Sep 2014 07:37:45 EST Tuna, hold the mayo I love tuna, packed in water. I eat it mixed with Mayo, tomato and celery as a low carb sandwich. My problem is I did not want to measure the mayo, I just get a bog glob and mix. So I hadn't a clue on calories, though it is HIGH.

I love avocados. Today it occurred to me to replace the mayo with an avocado. Avos are great for us, and they have that same creamy oily texture and a great flavor. So today I made a new recipe.

1) 3 cans of Tuna
2) 1 large beefsteak... Thu, 11 Sep 2014 16:32:31 EST Thursday Storms last night but not nearly as bad as predicted. At least not here. I guess they were bad elsewhere. High today of 69, highs for the next 10 days mid 60s to mid 70s, or about 10 degrees below average.

Booked my trip home at Christmas. Was able to use frequent flyer miles and get the aisle bulkhead seats. No one will be reclining in my lap! I have to stay in Twin Falls for a little over a month to get the cheapest FF rates. Oh, the joys of being retired!

A few erran... Thu, 11 Sep 2014 07:44:13 EST Wednesday Absolutely nothing scheduled for the whole day! In fact, all I have scheduled for the rest of the week is taking the cat to the shelter to see the vet. Poor thing had an eye infection and the skin all around his eyes and half way down his nose is all raw and oozy. The shelter staff couldn't figure it out so we see the vet, who comes in Friday afternoons. Poor baby (cat, not the vet) really doesn't feel well. He spends as much time as possible on my lap.

Saw the doctor yesterday and... Wed, 10 Sep 2014 09:58:43 EST Recipes for low-carb dairy/soy-free protein bars? I really need something healthy that my daughter can eat after her swim workouts. I've been thinking of some combo of almonds/almond meal/almond butter, hemp seed and coconut oil, maybe 90% dark chocolate, possibly flavored with cinnamon. If it were no-bake that would make it easier. I've also thought about something that includes eggs for higher protein content. If anyone has a recipe I'd be interested.
Birgit Wed, 10 Sep 2014 00:10:29 EST Another study showing LC better than low fat This study was on the news this week:

00694
Tue, 9 Sep 2014 22:20:28 EST New! Been down this road before 10 -15 years ago I am starting a low carb lifestyle next week. I was on Atkins for about 5 years back in college and have been on lots of different systems since then. I was at my thinnest (if you can say that) on Atkins and it seems to keep me satisfied as well. So I am going back down this low carb road. I have been on HCG in order to fit into a bridal shower dress because I gained 25 lbs in about 6 months and have to fit into it this weekend! It is happening, but I want off the HCG. It is too hardcor... Tue, 9 Sep 2014 10:41:37 EST Tuesday Doctor's appointment this afternoon to talk about the bronchitis/asthma/allergies or whatever it was I had. And which is pretty much over, thank goodness! Will do a bit of grocery shopping while I'm on that side of town.

Got two big boxes of books on Free Day at the library's book sale. Mostly cookbooks. Which I'll copy the best sounding recipes from and then donate to the food pantry. I got some cook books that I have no interest in but that sounded like they might be something t... Tue, 9 Sep 2014 09:18:57 EST low carb trumps low calorie I am still struggling with which diet is the best for me...low carb or low calorie. The main thing I struggle with low carb is not allowing fruit. When I do low carb I am never hungry but I feel like I am heavy with the fat intake and that makes me physically feel like I am doing bad things to my body and blood. Then I start craving fruit and chocolate. I never give the low carb more than a few days before I am back on the low calorie, low fat, high carb diet. I have been doing this for years... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 10:04:50 EST Monday The Friends of the Library had their book sale this weekend. Today everything is free. I'll go down and probably pick up a bunch of cookbooks, maybe some other books, too. They have thousands of books left after the sale ends and I used to think I was being cheap and taking advantage of them by only taking them when the books are free. Turns out their glad to get rid of them because otherwise they have to dispose of the books themselves.

That's about all I have planned for today. ... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 06:44:48 EST Low carbing and need lots of help Hi everyone,
This team was recommended to me. I really want to do low carb, but I always fail at the plans that are too strict and have way too much work to them. Is there a simple way to keep yourself on track without having to cook three meals a day? I work 10-12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week and have no time for that. I don't mind counting carbs, but I just can't do all this cooking. Sun, 7 Sep 2014 21:06:58 EST Gallbladder Pain Ever since I started Keto last week, I have gallbladder pain after my meals. Does anyone else have this problem and what did you do about it? Sun, 7 Sep 2014 12:07:42 EST Sunday Woke up a few times with really bad heartburn for some reason, and ate to try to get it under control. So too much food after midnight and not enough sleep. Oh well.

MrThing, you mention on the Wall about doing Keto now and later switching to low carb. Tell me more about it, please. What exactly do you mean? Both the terms Keto and low carb get thrown around a lot and they seem to be rather imprecise. Do you mean Induction when you say Keto?

Went to the Farmers Market ye... Sun, 7 Sep 2014 09:01:13 EST New to Team Hopeing this works Hi, I have been on spark since 2010 when I started my weight loss journey, I was so excited and so ready to do what ever it took to get the weight off. and it worked I mean I followed every bit of suggestions, spark article, tips tricks and I worked out a lot well the weight did come off I was 330lbs and I dropped 90 and I really have kept it off except 10 came back on over the Holidays of 2013.. I have struggled since January 2014 to lose this 10 and the rest to get to my goal weight of 180.... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 20:08:51 EST Insulin Resistance and starting over with Atkins Hi!! I have been away from Spark for a few years. Was trying so hard to get my weight down and nothing was working. After spending the past year going to doctors I was finally referred to an endocrinologist and was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance. I am now on meds to help with the weight loss and other issues related to this. The meds are supposed to help in conjunction with some sort of diet, so I am trying the Atkins diet since it eliminates the carbs and sugars that I cannot pro... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 16:09:31 EST ALDI has grass-fed beef! OMG! You could have knocked me over with a feather! I don't know if this is something brand new or I just noticed it. I never buy their "fresh" meat. It's full of saltwater and has a nasty texture. So I don't know what caught my eye about this little one pound package, but there it was, 100% organic 100% grass-fed ground beef! I'm so happy! My local grocery stores just don't carry it.

I really don't know why my side of town doesn't have ANY of the good food choices, even though we... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 10:54:20 EST free ebook - Go Atkins without breaking the bank Just ran across this free kindle book. Haven't read it but thought I'd share it anyway. I stayed up for it, though, and didn't get to bed until late. "Slept in" this morning - didn't get up at 4! Slept until about 6:30. Haven't checked to see if it's raining. If not, or not very much, I may try to get to the Farmers Market. Have only been three or four times (actually, I think it's only two or three) instead of weekly like I usually do. Depending on how much that exhausts me, I'd like to go to... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 07:04:24 EST Friday It is Friday, isn't it? I get my days mixed up.

Woke up a little after 3 again this morning, so got up and took my thyroid pill which needs to be taken at least two hours before my prednisone, which needs to be taken with breakfast. Then I have to sit up for at least half an hour. Worked on my food pantry blog which is due this morning. I'll go back to bed in a little bit.

The a/c repair guy is coming today to check out my system. No problems, though it probably needs a... Fri, 5 Sep 2014 04:17:19 EST Lard? Thu, 4 Sep 2014 08:23:56 EST Water consumption and weight loss Sort of a random question, but all the nutrition folks always say 'drink more water'. But there would appear to be a limit to the amount at some point---right?

I find if I chug water I stay hydrated, but I'd swear that the weight loss slows. It might just be water retention, but it seems tricky to manage. I don't drink a gallon a day and wouldn't want to drink too little, but I'm not sure what is ideal.

Some say 'look at your pee' but I take a lot of B-vitamins, so th... Wed, 3 Sep 2014 07:30:42 EST Wednesday Slept a little bit better last night. I kept waking up very hour or so, but I least I went right back to sleep. Usually. Woke up about 3:30 and couldn't get back to sleep, so got up about 4:00 and took my thyroid pill. I'm supposed to take it a couple of hours before the prednisone (actually, before any of the other pills, but I've taken them together for so long that the pharmacist said not to worry about them) and stay sitting or standing for 30 minutes afterwards. So here I am, doing my sp... Wed, 3 Sep 2014 04:28:48 EST It's Never Too Late to Learn September Challenge There's so much to learn about this way of life on which we're embarked! All the studies and science about nutrition and exercise, and how we each, individually, respond to different foods and regimes, including both physically and emotionally.

Let's take this month and really work at learning about the science and about ourselves, so we can give our best to this way of eating and way of life and get the best out of it. We're so worth it!

(Hope you don't mind my preempt... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 10:50:45 EST September Food Stamp Challenge The goal of this challenge is to eat on a "food stamp budget." Define it however you like! I'm defining it myself as the average food stamp benefit actually received per person in Indiana according to the most recent stats I can find. The average benefit received in April and May of this year in Indiana was $120, so that's my goal. To make it stick, if I go over $120 I am going to donate the entire amount I spend (not just the excess by all of it) to our local food pantry. That should give me... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 06:43:01 EST The evidence is piling up Wonder what so-called nutrition expert Becky Hand would say about this?

/344315405/cutting-back-on-carbs-not-f
at-may-lead-to-more-weight-loss

Hard to argue with science Tue, 2 Sep 2014 06:38:17 EST Tuesday So my Monday/Tuesday went well food wise. I did get some pulled BQQ pork from the cafe but I could barely eat any of it along with a few spears of broccoli and some nacho cheese. I just couldn't eat much. I LOVE the Chicken Chile Lime Burgers from Trader Joe's, though. I ate one of those and cheese for breakfast and then half of one and some onions, peppers, and mushrooms in cream cheese and habanero cheese for my dinner... Ended up eating only 1200 calories and at about 60% fat.

... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 05:28:45 EST New to team, trying to learn more I am new to this team and trying to learn how to make things low carb. My doctor told me she wants me on a "modified" Atkins diet and to not eat grains. Haven't got quite to the no grains yet because I don't have the money to replace the grains I already have here. I have done Atkins once before, but it was many years ago when he first came out with one and managed to lose 12 pounds and then nothing more.

Does anyone know what "modified" would mean? I can get fairly low carb,... September Challenge I came in right about where I planned to last month, real close to $150. I had to guess on a few things, like the allocation of a trip to Walmart between food, medicine and household supplies. But it's really close to $150. And my freezer is getting really empty!

My budget for September is $120, which is the average food stamp benefit received per person in Indiana in April and May of this year. Mon, 1 Sep 2014 05:24:00 EST Sept - Hunger Action Month/Food Stamp Challenge Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, designated September as Hunger Action Month. Last year their main push was to get people to try eating on a Food Stamp budget for a week. They're pushing more action this year, trying to get the word out about the roughly 20% of Americans who are food insecure - the new politically correct way to refer to people who don't have enough to eat. Here's a link to the main page about it.

er-action-m... I was well on my way until I had a bike accident and jacked up my knee. I had knee surgery and recovered and went back to work. Sun, 31 Aug 2014 18:13:34 EST Sunday I'm tired of waking up before dawn even thinks of cracking and not being able to go back to sleep! However, I certainly do like waking up able to breath! Don't know if it's the prednisone or the inhaler or it it was just time for the original meds to kick in, but I feel so much better. I know they're just masking the symptoms, but I sure do like being able to take a deep breath.

Nothing planned for the day except maybe some grocery shopping. Not sure about that for two reasons. One... Sun, 31 Aug 2014 05:52:27 EST Kombucha questions I was suggested by a Sparker to try Kombucha. Fri, 29 Aug 2014 10:02:23 EST Thursday Another hot and humid day. Sure wish I could open up the house and air it out! Oh well. Soon.

Nothing on the agenda except taking a few things back to the shelter. Not all of it, but the stuff I think they may need. Like the pen I have set up in my living room. A couple of tiny little leashes. And, most important, Maize's bed. Maybe she'll feel better there all alone if she has her own bed.

No plans for the weekend, either. How about you? What are your plans? Thu, 28 Aug 2014 10:13:29 EST Carb Binge! Staying away from the scale for a week. My eating has gotten out of control these past 2 days. Having episodes of hypoglycemia, blood sugar too low, causing me to keep eating without satisfaction. I think I need to add more carbs. All this hard work on the Atkins induction diet 20 net carbs, and I just binged on 145 carbs! It was a fruit and sweet potato binge. No junk, refined sugars, grains, or gluten. Still... it's a huge set back. I'm very disappointed with myself. Over ate by 1,500 calor... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 20:05:45 EST Wednesday Might do the things today that I didn't do yesterday - return the book, pick up new books, take dogs to shelter. Or I may not. Planning to mostly take it easy today.

Was out of chicken broth, so I cooked up some thighs from the freezer in the pressure cooker, then took the meat off the bones and returned the bones and some smoked ham hocks to the cooker and cooked for a couple of hours. Not as strong as my usual bone broth (which is likely to cook for 24+ hours in the slow cooker) ... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 08:32:41 EST Tuesday I need to return a book to the food pantry and pick up a book at the library and take the dogs to the shelter to visit for an hour or two. I think I'll take the dogs in and stay with them for a little bit, then run the errands and come home, then go pick them up later. I hope that they'll be so glad to see someone they know that they'll both be happy to see me! Maize lets me pet her, and even climbs halfway on my lap when I'm on the floor in the pen. Sable still runs to the other corner. But ... Tue, 26 Aug 2014 09:42:01 EST 2 Weeks on Atkins Induction I've lost 3.6 lbs on Atkins induction phase diet. 10 more lbs to go to get back to my original weight of 2013.

I have no plans to add any more carbs to my diet right now. I'm pretty satisfied with my daily menu. Tue, 26 Aug 2014 07:32:38 EST New Day Hi! I'm a 37 year old mom that has been overweight my whole life. I had good success with Atkins about 13 years ago, so I'm starting over with a low carb lifestyle. Here, in the UK, it's a "Bank Holiday Weekend" -- the end of summer. (It's the last full weekend in August, where the Monday holiday itself is still August.) Seems it's the week before Labor Day. At least, it HAS been for the 10 yrs I have been over here!

So, I will work a few hours Saturday morning, as usual, and make sure I get some ME time in on Sunday and Monday, too! Wed, 20 Aug 2014 15:49:47 EST Wednesday I am exhausted! There was a 90% chance of severe storms last night, so I said I would work at the Emergency Shelter (homeless shelter for women that's only open for severe weather). No one had come to stay by midnight, when I was supposed to start, so they closed it and I didn't have to go in. I checked the weather forecast then, and it said 0% chance for most of the night, 5% towards morning. So the heavens opened up about 1:00 and, as the song goes (and in keeping with yesterday's thread) "... Wed, 20 Aug 2014 08:45:50 EST Bok Choy? Is Bok Choy an approved veggie on the Atkins induction phase? I returned my Atkins diet book to the library, and failed to make a list of the approved veggies! Tue, 19 Aug 2014 09:22:59 EST Tuesday Good morning, SparkFamily!

I have a boat ton of paperwork to do today (I WILL get it done! I WILL!), so I'd better get to it. I was in such great shape a few years ago. I lost weight on Atkins and was very active. For several reasons, I am far heavier than I've ever been in my life and it's time to get healthy again! Starting tomorrow, I'll be back on Atkins Induction. Mon, 18 Aug 2014 21:19:52 EST Hello, starting tomorrow! Hi, starting Atkins Induction tomorrow,so psyched! I've read the book, have my foods in my fridge, have my plan. I've been eating lower carb for several weeks and have lost 5 lbs, but need more structure and guidance. So I'm ready to reduce the carbs, up the fat, ditch the whole grains and fruit and get serious!
Mon, 18 Aug 2014 20:05:02 EST Day 1 Today is the first day of Induction, and I am nervous as heck! I have never went a single day without copious amounts of caffeine, sugar, and carbs. I stocked up on meat & veggies this weekend, got some sparking water to help fill the soda void, and signed up for a 2x week Zumba class. I am so excited about what lies beyond the next few weeks, I hope I can draw on that during the hard times!!

249 91 4 mm Mon, 18 Aug 2014 12:04:59 EST Hello Hello everyone! My name is Jess and I am new to both low carb and this group! I am an receptionist from Iowa, married, and 2 fur babies. I never thought in a million years in my yoyo dieting I would end up on a low carb path, but recently I have fully realized how bad my dependency on carbs and sugar is. It is my go to for all brands of emotional eating and all of my triggers for my binge eating are carbs or sugar. I decided enough is enough, it is time to take that final step and break ... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 11:56:07 EST Fat for Energy?? I get these strange bursts of energy, then I feel incredibly fatigued afterwards. Is that my body burning fat for fuel, instead of glucose? It feels very different, I feel good in the morning, then a few hours later I feel like a limp rag, and I can't feel my limbs. I just have to lay down and rest until another small burst of energy happens.

Also, about 2 minutes into exercise... my thigh muscles feel like they're ripping apart! Mon, 18 Aug 2014 06:54:03 EST Did anyone else lose their nutrition setting on SP I had a bad carb day yesterday and was surprised in running the nutrition feedback that SP congratulated me on getting enough carbs.

That's when I noticed that the goals I had set for fats and carbs had been reset back to SP's defaults.

Does this happened on a regular basis?

I can't find the website I used to help me set the ranges originally. Sun, 17 Aug 2014 12:21:00 EST Sunday Good morning!

I'm hoping for a nice quiet productive day. I'm still fighting fatigue, so I decided to sleep in instead of going to church. I've read that some people lose 15 lbs on the 2 week Atkins induction phase. Is this also possible for people who have 20 lbs or less to lose? Or is that only possible for people who have a lot of weight to lose? Sun, 17 Aug 2014 05:15:12 EST Is Pork a Problem for Anyone? Does anyone have their weight loss stall if they eat pork? I think I might have an allergy to it. I've not eaten it in years, but I recently tried some natural pork, no sodium added. I gained 2 lbs overnight! And my face and eyes were puffy.

Has anyone else experienced this reaction to pork? Right now, I'm sticking with beef, chicken, turkey, and lamb. I have a mild allergy to all fish and shellfish, so I know I have to stay away from those too. Sat, 16 Aug 2014 14:13:48 EST Sodium Question?? I'm used to following a low-sodium diet. But I've heard you need more sodium on Atkins induction phase because you tend to lose so many electrolytes through the water elimination. How many of you track your sodium?

I do not eat any packaged, canned, processed, or cured meats. I only add natural salt to the low-carb food I cook.

What is a good recommendation? I try to consume 1,500 mg of natural sodium or less. That is what the American Heart Association recommends. Do a... Sat, 16 Aug 2014 14:09:09 EST Help! Sat, 16 Aug 2014 10:29:13 EST Magnesium Question? Will it impact my induction weight loss if I take Calm Powdered Magnesium supplement? I can't find a carb count on it. Not my babies, though. The ARF dogs are special trained therapy dogs. It will be good to see them again. It's been several months.

That's about all I have planned for the day. It's supposed to rain, so a good day to stay home.

Anyone want to join me for a Food Stamp Challenge next month? Fri, 15 Aug 2014 09:33:08 EST Good Morning from a Low Carb Veteran Good Morning All,

I'm rather new to the group but certainly not new to low-carb living. I find that going low-carb and gluten-free is the only way of eating that makes me feel better and helps me lose weight. I've done Atkins, South Beach, the Mediterranean, and the Ketogenic diet. Lately I've been doing Keto only, making major changes to my life but I found that I just can't seem to get my digestion in order while doing strict Keto. I think too much fat and not enough fiber. <... Fri, 15 Aug 2014 07:29:55 EST New to low carb and group Hi everyone, For the past 15 yrs I have been struggling with my weight. I lost weight on WW but found it didn't address my love of sugar. I'm an emotional eater and sweet foods are my comfort foods. For me to successfully lose weight I need to get my carbs under control. I think Atkins will help me accomplish this. I've been away from Spark for about two years but decided to come back to see if there were any low carb groups. I'm so glad I found this team! Thu, 14 Aug 2014 19:45:55 EST THURSDAY well, it's 7:30 am and my day has started -- I am at work but checking in here first.

Been even busier with our business, but I am getting more organised, and we have a young man helping us 2 days a week, for several hours each day. So that is helping a ton.

Food on plan -- YAY!

Rainy today, but got the dogs out once already, and regardless of the wet, I will get them out at least once again today.

Well, onwards and upwards.

Have a super ... I've been reading posts from Living Low Carb for quite awhile now and would like to join the team. Not sure how to go about it, where to post, and how to set my tracker up for low carb eating. Would appreciate any help you can give as I'm not real computer savy. I've been glued to the computer nightly reading all the posts and feel this is an excellent group to join. I appreciate any help you can give. Wed, 13 Aug 2014 09:16:11 EST Wednesday Humidity is supposed to be way down today, which is wonderful!

How are you doing, Lithgirl? Sat, 9 Aug 2014 17:20:10 EST Hi Team Just joined this team.
I have played on Sparks for a while and I have been successful in losing weight before (70 pounds) but maintenance didn't go quite as planned ;-)

A rebound of 40 pounds and a desire to encourage someone else who can't exercise, I researched and joined up with Ideal Protein. It is expensive, but the local support, weekly weigh-in and coaching seemed to balance out the costs.

I have been on this plan for just over a week and lost 9 pounds the... Sat, 9 Aug 2014 12:43:02 EST Saturday I have two bum knees, but they haven't been giving me too much trouble lately. Until yesterday. When I woke up my bad knee was swollen and hard to bend and hurt when I walked on it. I could barely walk around the house, let alone out to the car in the driveway, and I had doubts about whether I'd be able to work the clutch. So I stayed home. Also stayed home because I took some really heavy duty NSAIDs the doc gave me in case my knee acted up while I was in Idaho and they made me really groggy... Sat, 9 Aug 2014 12:17:01 EST Activity trackers Hi!

I am getting ready to purchase an activity tracker. I am looking for one that counts my steps, calories burned, and definitely plays nicely with Spark fitness and food trackers.

I may be interested in sleep information, measure altitude for hiking, and heart/pulse monitor.

What do you have? Someone's coming over tomorrow morning to look at my babies and maybe adopt them so I have to get the house cleaned up. Wed, 6 Aug 2014 10:39:04 EST Tuesday I'll do a stint at the food pantry this afternoon. My official time is 12:30 to 2:30, working the Tool Share desk, but I'm going to be demoing something, too. It's crazy that I need to spend that much, but that seems to be about what I should budget for. Especially in the summer with the Farmers Market, though I haven't been but a few times this summer. My budget is $200, but I'm shooting for $150.

I have to be careful this month, because of the dogs. Sable is really the one the shelter wants in a foster home. She's about 4-1/2 and very nervous. She shivers practically bigger than she is and cowers in the back of the kennel behind Maize. I'm on day 4 and have lost 5 pounds. My mood is great and I haven't been overly hungry.

My friends are all on a Vegan diet, but I can't do that long term. I tried, but my stomach would become upset and I ended up with gastritis because of eating so many veggies raw or cooked. My Dr suggested a low carb diet.

So here I am. Tue, 29 Jul 2014 12:37:43 EST Calories The thing I love about Atkins is that you don't have to count calories but at some point don't calories matter?

I have been in inductions for the last several weeks and my calories range is in the neighborhood of 1400-1600 and I'm wondering if that's too high? I would love to make some low carb SP friends on here. I would just love to have some support from people who are on the same journey I'm on. So please feel free to send me a message and add me. I would appreciate it so much. Or just comment here and we can add each other.

Thanks and best wishes! Mon, 28 Jul 2014 13:41:31 EST Monday Yes is me starting the thread. Had a great weekend. Still "STREAKING." Staying on track. Weight is still not budging much. Mon, 28 Jul 2014 12:13:15 EST Sunday I'm up, but barely awake. I worked a the emergency homeless shelter last night from midnight to 3 am. They were forecasting severe weather, but it missed us. I think that's happened every time they've opened the shelter because of bad weather - it passes us by. Got about 2 hours sleep when I came home, then woke up at 5:30 as usual. Dozed until about 7:30 and then gave up. I think the shelter will be open tonight, too, but once a week is enough for me. Let those young, idealistic college kids... Sun, 27 Jul 2014 10:11:38 EST Saturday Our beautiful weather is supposed to change for weekend. 80s instead of 70s. Which is where it's supposed to be this time of year.

Made Zucchini Meatloaf at the food pantry yesterday. Turned out pretty good, except it needed more salt. I think the original recipe was wrong. It made too much (an 8-cup casserole instead of 6-cup), was too bland, and took lots longer to cook. The recipe called for 2 pounds of ground beef and I think 1 pound would have made everything else work better.... Sat, 26 Jul 2014 10:32:29 EST Friday Yes it is. Fri, 25 Jul 2014 10:57:57 EST Not letting minor slip-ups derail the low-carbing Well, this is pretty good news.

Yesterday, I was mostly on plan, but due to 'hormonal influences' (enough said), I gave in and added a few tsp. of sugar to two separate cups of coffee.

I also overdid it on chicken pepperoni sticks. Low carb, and I turned to them rather than something filled with carbs, but still placed me my plan's 1200 calorie limit. And I had two bowls of grapes.

This morning, I was only 1 lb. up from yesterday.

And the great new... Fri, 25 Jul 2014 10:00:51 EST THURSDAY Here's a START! Crazy day! Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:00:02 EST Caffeine's effects on ketosis I'm looking for some info - anecdotal or scientific - about how caffeine affects ketosis. I've known for a long time that my Ketostix are pale in the morning, even if all I've had is coconut oil and half and half in my coffee, but as the morning wears on and the caffeine wears off (I switch to decaf at 8am) the stix get darker. I'm not eating a solid breakfast anymore, so the only fresh calories in my system are from the coffee.

I'm pretty convinced that, for me at least, caffeine ... Wed, 23 Jul 2014 11:16:41 EST Wednesday A big storm right about now. Lots of thunder (and I assume lightning) and rain. Not severe, though - not much rain.

The only thing on the calendar for today is a couple of hours at the Animal Shelter making dog toys out of old tennis balls.

Happy Hump day, everyone! Wed, 23 Jul 2014 09:16:52 EST First four days -- a bit headachy, mild cravings Hi, everyone.

Well, I'm relieved to say that I've lost four lbs. in my first few days of low carb eating.

I've been having some mild cravings, but I've been okay with them. I did find that having some fruit helped. I'm not doing a very low-carb plan (more like 50-100g. maximum) so some fruit works for me when I have a sugar craving.

But the headache I have today is really tough. Is this typical in the first few days? When does it resolve? I'm also a bit lighth... Tue, 22 Jul 2014 13:42:09 EST Are there any decent low carb/wheat free foods? I've been wheat free for over 6 weeks now and following a moderately low carb diet keeping my carbs at less than 100g per day, though I do try to shoot for 50g per day.

I certainly don't want to fill my diet with "replacements" and gluten-free items, but wouldn't mind having some gluten free pretzels or maybe some low-carb/wheat free wraps on hand for the occasional sandwich/wrap.

Any suggestions on items that actually have flavor, don't have wheat, and taste good? Mon, 21 Jul 2014 08:38:23 EST looking for a low carb potluck recipe My workplace is big on potlucks, the only problem is that low carb items are in short supply at these events. Most of the protein brought to these events is high carb: fried chicken, meatballs or sausages in sweet & sour or barbecue sauce, so I can't count on getting protein w/o carbs. I have a couple of co-workers doing Paleo that have simply refused to come to potlucks any more. I know I have to get up in the dark in the winter, but in the summer?

I found an article about 50 things to do with zucchini. Thu, 17 Jul 2014 09:13:03 EST 40 something mom hoping this diet will work! Hi, everyone.

I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I could write a book about my rapid weight gain (from size 6 to 20) because of medications, and my many attempts at losing the weight. But I won't. :) Instead, let's just say that in my 40s, I have 152 lbs. to lose to reach my goal -- really, 125 lbs. to reach the normal weight range for my height. And after all of those attempts, I lost faith in myself -- in my ability to set a goal and keep my word to myself on an ... Wed, 16 Jul 2014 20:32:10 EST WEDNESDAY! Almost Noon! And I can't get the paper in the chimney lit. Note I didn't say I couldn't get the charcoal lit. No, I couldn't get the PAPER lit! Just then I see that the paper is burning nicely and... Mon, 14 Jul 2014 17:51:23 EST Monday Happy Monday, everyone! And welcome to a new week!

I'm still having trouble with my cat. Teicholz examines the history of the diet-heart health myth, how the theory evolved and was promoted throughout the United States and the world, revealing the fact that there is NO hard science backing up the recommendation to reduce or eliminate saturated fats in our diets. She examines the results of this advice, specifically our increase... July Challenge OK, I'm home now and need to get back to a budget. I'm shooting for $150 for the month, though $200 is more likely. I spent $31 at the Farmers Market yesterday, but that included $16 for 4.5 pounds of bacon ends, so $15 for veggies. Figuring two more Saturdays this month and $15 each time, that's $60 right there. Pork loin is on sale for $1.77 at Kroger and I'll get two of those and have one sliced up for chops and the other into a roast and some chops. Figure that's another $15-$20. Plus I'm... Thu, 10 Jul 2014 10:08:19 EST Back on Atkins Hello All, Just joined this group, looking for recipe ideas and support. Did Atkins last year. I lost well for 3 weeks and then nothing for 4 months, finally gave up. I've been having headaches/migraines daily and I'm beginning to think it's sugar that's the cause. So, looking to see if induction stops the headaches. Then what I don't know. Really need to drop some pounds. I don't feel I can exercise at this weight, hope to start after I drop some.

This was day 2, woke wit... Wed, 9 Jul 2014 21:35:59 EST Wednesday Set the alarm for 4:45 this morning (is it even morning at that hour?) but couldn't sleep anyway so got up about 4:00. They reduced the number of flights in and out of here from four to two to reduce the average weight time in Salt Lake City, which is the only airport flights go to. Haven't figured out how fewer flights reduces the average weight time, but that's what they said. Between that and eliminating the direct flights from SLC to Indy, they've made it a much longer day for me. Oh well... Wed, 9 Jul 2014 06:32:24 EST TUESDAY! CELEBRATE! Here we ARE! YIPPPEE! She just wanted a walk. So I got dressed and took her for a walk, then thinned apples. Picked and/or picked up about 8 gallons of apples, most of which are good enough for pies or applesauce, but not ripe enough for just eating. I think Mom's going to give them to the neighbor whose apple tree has no apples on it at all. Somehow it doesn't seem very nice that Mom gives her the windfalls and the ones... I started Atkins induction last week and have been in ketosis for a few days. Most success stories or posts on Atkins forums will boast 15, 20+ pound losses in the first month, but my starting point is different than most of these cases. I've been dieting and exercising for over a year and have already lost almost 60 pounds, so I'm not expecting the same big numbers and water weight loss as a new dieter.

I went from 190 (obese) to low 130s (normal) and would still like to lose aro... Tue, 24 Jun 2014 19:45:56 EST Tuesday Been a crazy weekend for me. I was so tired when I got home from work Monday morning that I slept until 5, ate a little and watched 3 episodes of Star Trek... then back to sleep until I woke at 730 this morning. My body was exhausted and needed a break. I would have slept right through if DH hadn't woken me up to eat. Undoubtedly I was getting clammy and my hands were shaking in my sleep. I never realized I did that but he said I do whenever I haven't eaten in a while. My mother mentioned the... Sat, 21 Jun 2014 23:25:41 EST New today Hi, just checking in to see how you use SparkPeople and low carb together, I was doing Atkins for awhile last year and was 15 lbs successful, but I got tired of it and gained it all back. Sat, 21 Jun 2014 22:56:45 EST Wheat, carbs, diets and allergies? How do you know if you have a problem with eating wheat or carbs and if that is what's keeping you from losing weight? Will probably be ready to go back to bed about time to get up.

Have to get the house ready for the cleaning lady this morning. Mostly a matter of washing a few dishes. Need to get my hair cut some time this week and need to get a few toiletries. It rained yesterday so maybe we can get out and pull some weeds. Oh joy. Tue, 17 Jun 2014 07:52:29 EST New to the team and lifestyle change! Hello,

My name is Lauren. I am 26 years old and just found out that a small medical problem has turned into more. I was diagnosed with PCOS and Fatty Liver disease when I was 18 and started to gain weight. I went from 135 pounds to 180 pounds within a few short months. I then shot up to 200 pounds and stayed at that weight until I was 25. I then met my husband in May of 2013 and as all new relationships go I started to put on a few extra pounds here and there. In March 2014 I had ... Tue, 17 Jun 2014 07:50:24 EST Monday - never mind - duplicate Duplicate Mon, 16 Jun 2014 16:13:34 EST Monday I went bounding upstairs this morning and told Mom that I'm finally feeling fit and well and have energy and I'm ready to start helping get things ready for our trip! Then proceeded to put teabag in a cup of water and put it in the fridge to brew. Don't you just love Mondays?

Went to Winco and got a bunch of groceries for the trip and started putting together the stuff we'll take. Either Mom is going to be surprised when we end up having to buy lots more food or I'm going to be sur... Mon, 16 Jun 2014 16:09:53 EST Suggestions for Brown Bag Lunches My DD#2 is starting Induction today. Sun, 15 Jun 2014 10:24:45 EST Macronutrients - percentages, grams, or both? So on certain days my protein is really high because I don't eat like I should. But my fat percentages ARE at 70% or higher. I was at 2800 calories, 31g net carbs, 210g fat, and 189g protein. Yeah, I know... that's a LOT of protein. I'm ashamed 46

I can't see eating more fat balancing the too much protein but I just wanted an opinion on this since I know you guys know this!

334 Sun, 15 Jun 2014 04:10:04 EST SATURDAY My blood sugar this morning was back down to 7.1 mmol/L. (128 mg/dL)

No meds. A few days ago I was doing renovation work and didn't have time to eat properly and ate 3 Atkins bars (19 grams of carbs each) in addition to some other carbs, probably bringing me to near 100. My morning BS then was 8.7 mmol/L. ( 157 mg/dL).

Yes 90 grams of carbs is too much for me.

James Sat, 14 Jun 2014 10:35:39 EST Time Magazine: Eat Butter

35825844/Ending%20the%20War%20on%20Fat
.pdf
Sat, 14 Jun 2014 06:42:54 EST High Carb Caveman After noting how hard it is to eat 50 Net Carbs, eating lower glycemic carbs from fruits, and veggies, I wrote a blog, and decided to do a thread here that I think will be fun.

The idea being, that on a 2000 calorie diet, we need 50 % carbs ( 1000 calories or 250 grams ).

So in the beginning.. or after we crawled out of the primordial ooze...there was a caveman. Fri, 13 Jun 2014 10:43:00 EST Great Rhubarb Recipe? My friend is trying to stay LC when visiting her mom and she insists on making rhubarb pie. I'm thinking if she brings a recipe with her for a LC dessert she can make that instead and her mom will have to oblige. Any favorites? Thu, 12 Jun 2014 16:11:06 EST New to Group Hello! I am new to this group - looking for motivation and strength as I get back on a low-carb lifestyle. A few years ago I lost about 40 pounds doing a medically supervised low calorie, high protein, low carb diet and I felt so awesome. Then, of course, I took a trip out of state and it all went downhill. I gained it all back plus like an extra 20 lbs. So I have been yo-yoing ever since and I am just done with it! I know that carbs are not a friend of my waistline so I really just need to d... Thu, 12 Jun 2014 13:06:21 EST Thursday What a start to the 'day'! I stayed up all night so I could flip back to night shift mode to work this weekend... but I wanted to go out for a short 20 minutes walk this morning to enjoy the nice weather and hear the birds sing... what I found was a skunk on our side porch! The darn thing sprayed my porch, too! Now I gotta get DH to get hydrogen peroxide and baking soda so I can spray the porch and get rid of the smell. I was wondering why my cat was meowing at the door but I just figured ano... Thu, 12 Jun 2014 06:41:26 EST Low-carb and physiological insulin resistance I just came across this link researching why my A1c level does not drop on a very low-carb diet. Go to the bottom of the page to see all the articles linked.
Any input/discussion welcome.
I'm hoping to read a lot about this to find out if there is any possibility that a somewhat high A1c is not a problem on a ketogenic diet.

sistance/

Birgit Wed, 11 Jun 2014 13:25:25 EST Starting Over with Atkins I'm new to this board. Last year I lost 35# using Atkins, but during the winter, I was managing a major project at work and let the stress derail my efforts and have gained everything back. So here I go again. I'm so glad to have found this board on SparkPeople. Wed, 11 Jun 2014 13:11:28 EST Wednesday Arrived safe and sound at Mom's house about midnight, or about 2 am my time. Had a good trip but extremely carby. I ate things I haven't eaten in years, but at least I enjoyed them. Better than eating carbs that you don't enjoy. But even better to not eat them.

Was probably in bed by 1 am, and boy did I ever sleep! Woke up expecting it to be about 4 am for my usual 6 am potty break, and it was 8 o'clock! 10 o'clock my time. Was really tempted to go back to bed again after dozing on... Wed, 11 Jun 2014 11:26:33 EST Tuesday It rained last night and I didn't even know it. I'm glad. The yards and gardens need it, and I put down a bunch of straw as mulch last night and the rain will help it to stay put.

I leave in just 5 hours! Leave from home, that is. A friend is driving me to where I pick up the shuttle, then half an hour going to all the other stops here in town (mine is, of course, the first!) and an hour to Indy, then sit around the airport for three hours. Fly from here to Salt Lake City, sit aro... Woke up early and promptly sat down at the computer. I did just get up and put some clothes in the drier so I'm sort of multi-tasking at the moment - doing laundry and playing on the computer!

Have some errands to run today. I need to make a list of them so I don't forget anything. Have to pack; I think I can get everything but my carry-on packed today and then just have to do the carry-on tomorrow. Usually by now I would have a packing list ... Mon, 9 Jun 2014 06:56:06 EST Hi Everyone Hi everyone, I'm new to SparkPeople (kinda) and am back in weight loss mode again. The only way I've ever lost weight in my life is by eating low carb and maintaining low carb. Over the last two years I've re-married and my weight has slowly crept up due to poor eating choices. I'm happy to meet you all and excited to be part of the team!

I enjoy crochet, wine, and am a foodie (hence my issue - duh!). I go jogging and do yoga and love to visit gardens, collect art, and travel w... Sun, 8 Jun 2014 11:05:14 EST Help! Tips on adjusting I have been low-carb since April and lost 21 pounds (South Beach) with 26 pounds to go. I am in Phase 2 of South Beach, so I am allowed carbs in limited amounts. I hadn't been eating them often, but recently felt pressure from media and people around me in general to be "normal", which meant eating large amounts of carbs like "everyone else". The problem is that I overate carbs in my attempt to prove how normal I could be, and though I only gained 1.4 pounds..I still know that getting a bunch... Sun, 8 Jun 2014 09:59:57 EST Sunday Happy Sunday, everyone!

It rained last night, which is very good. Might rain some more today, which is also good. Though not for those who have outside activities planned, of course. But we really really need the rain. And it wasn't a downpour, which makes it even better.

Yard work this morning, getting the garden bed in the front of the house put to bed since I won't be using it, or at least not until the middle of next month. If then. A young couple I know from Korea ... Sun, 8 Jun 2014 09:18:58 EST overcooking HB eggs?? I forgot my eggs, and they boiled for 25 minutes. Normally I do them 15. I plan to mix them with mayo for lunch, but wondering if cooking them longer is a problem health-wise, or if they become too rubbery maybe.

Anyone have any experience with this? Sat, 7 Jun 2014 11:06:04 EST Children and Consumerism- Then vs Now I came across this amazing video in Dr. Mercola's latest newsletter how companies targeting children are a big reason for the diabetes/obesity/ADHD/ depression problems in youth today. The weather forecast even has warnings out.

It's nearing 8 am here, and have had the dogs out to the park behind our home. (I even managed to sleep in until 7 am!) So the day is starting out well.

...especially since I was super low carb yesterday. FINALLY! No sugar, wheat, fruit or anything high carb at all. An... Sat, 7 Jun 2014 02:58:22 EST How much weight have you lost this year? Wow! Everyone here seems to have their ducks in order with this low carb lifestyle. I am so there with you all! The food ideas that were discussed sound soooo yummy! I get excited about all the weight that will be lost while doing low carbs! How much weight have you lost this year? I have lost 19 pounds while doing lower carbs but then stopped but I am back on it! Fri, 6 Jun 2014 14:36:02 EST Friday Cats were quiet last night, so got a good night's sleep. I needed it!

Handyman is coming this morning to replace a downspout. Then errands this morning and bridge this afternoon. Maybe yard work this evening. Spent about an hour last night on yard work and could hardly move afterward! Feel much better this morning.

Have a great Friday and a great weekend, everyone! Fri, 6 Jun 2014 07:31:59 EST Lunch ideas that don't require reheating I work in the field several days per week and will go see clients back to back at their house. I try to pack a lunch these days but I am getting bored of the same old thing. I don't have access to a microwave or anything to reheat what I bring with me. I do have a cooler though to keep the food fresh.

I have been taking cut up veggies, lunch meat with cheese, salads, etc. but looking for something different. Any ideas for anyone that has been in this situation before? There has to... Thu, 5 Jun 2014 02:27:04 EST THURSDAY A bit after 7 am here -- been up for an hr and a half. Took the dogs to the park behind our house and am checking personal emails etc before digging into work (I am at the office already).

Yesterday's food was much better, although not perfect. Nearly zero carb all day till I got home and found some bread pudding I'd forgotten about. Well, it's gone now and I won't bring any more into the house. On the (very) up side, I did not buy any ice cream, candy, cake, etc, which I'd bee... Thu, 5 Jun 2014 02:21:11 EST Wednesday A bit of lightning about 3:30 so I checked on the cat to see if she was freaked. No, she was sitting on the patio enjoying the light show! So I went back to bed. Lots of lightning and thunder and rain about 6:00, so I just went ahead and got up. The rain and lightning and thunder are supposed to stop until about 11:00, so I should be able to get out and do the shopping that desperately needs to be done. I could manage without the food part of the shopping, but I'm almost out of toiletries tha... Wed, 4 Jun 2014 07:00:53 EST Thank you, All! I really believe had I not heard from those who sent me messages/Sparkmail/notes, I would not have been back for lots longer.

I have gained back nearly all my weight (not to my top weight, but to the highest I've been since joining Spark), and have been experiencing a really tough time emotionally. Facing one's own anger and pain is really hard, and food has been my drug of choice for years.

That said, I am on NO SUGAR today, to start with. Not even fruit. And although... Wed, 4 Jun 2014 04:16:20 EST Tuesday Yikes! It's almost 5:00 and no Tuesday thread.

Did some housework this morning, worked on moving some blog posts to the new blog for the food pantry, and spent almost 3 hours at the animal shelter. A good day.

Hope your day has been good, too. Tue, 3 Jun 2014 16:51:12 EST Gary Taubes article from 7/7/2002

what-if-it-s-all-been-a-big-fat-lie.html

What if it's all been a big fat lie? Had never read the article before, and happened upon it. Thought others might have read his books, but not the original article. Tue, 3 Jun 2014 10:28:31 EST Hi everyone I've lost 37 pounds doing South Beach and feel and look so much better. I'd like to lose about 20 more, but find myself dealing with the same 2 pounds over and over, so I hope to find some inspiration here to get momentum back. Tue, 3 Jun 2014 07:07:41 EST Question: What Motivates You? I don't understand something. Why do some people think that they can take pills for their diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., then continue to eat the same unhealthy way that made them sick? Why are only some people motivated to try to be healthy? What motivates you? Mon, 2 Jun 2014 15:39:07 EST Monday It was going to be a busy day, but I decided not to do the morning stuff. I'm on the computer, instead. I do plan on getting out and working in the yard for a while this morning, though. We had a little bit of rain last night. I'm hoping that it was enough that I can pull weeds.

Then I'll pick a bunch of mint and gather up some other things to take to the food pantry (I often feel like I'm using them as a garbage dump when I take stuff I've decluttered from around the house, but so... June Challenge A strange month for me food budget wise. I'll only be here for 9-1/2 days, then will spend the rest of the month and the first week or so of next month in Idaho with Mom. She'll provide the food, I'll take her out a couple of times. I want to use up all of the fresh stuff before I leave, so in the best of all possible worlds I wouldn't spend any money on food before I leave. I'd just clean out the fridge and eat from the freezer and pantry. However, although this is a pretty good world we hav... And I never knew we had a Team Wall. When did that happen??

Anyway I'm starting anew, being the First of June and all. Some yardwork and tracking/journaling.
