Wed, 24 Dec 2014 07:17:50 EST Defending Beef - a great stocking stuffer This book says everything you need to know about beef and why and how it's a very healthy part of your diet and why it is also very good for the environment rather than polluting it. It's all about raising cattle on natural food (pasture and hay with minimal grain) on open grasslands where the manure improves the soil (often after this soil had been abused by mono-culture crop-raising for years where nothing would grow any more).
It also explains why beef, even from CAFOS (confined anim... Sun, 21 Dec 2014 07:29:29 EST Carb/Pro tein/Fat ratios Hi Again,

Reading Sassy's comments got me thinking about how one determines the best ratio of carbs, fats and proteins for their body. How do you know that you are in a good range?

I have been low carb almost one month (50-75g per day) and have begun feeling fatigued even though I exercise moderately and sleep well. I loose weight slowly and have lost a pound per week except this past week. I am not surprised by that because I am really close to my goal.

I won... That makes sense and seems easily doable. I'd just eat my normal LCHF routine closer together.

Another plan was the 5:2 or the 4:3. From what I read, it seemed like people did 'whatever' on the 4 or 5, and then ate super low calories (like 500) on the 2 or 3 days. Research is showing the 4:3 to be... Wed, 17 Dec 2014 11:45:30 EST Is the damage done by the SAD diet reversible? Tue, 9 Dec 2014 09:19:38 EST Hiatal Hernia and Low Carb Hi everyone, after doing research online, books, etc., I am strongly considering switching my diet to low carb to lose weight and get my health back. I have a hiatal hernia and it is getting to the place where I have hard time breathing. Tue, 25 Nov 2014 00:48:53 EST Thoughts on white bean extract and living low carb I've been "living low carb" for approximately 4 months now, have lost 18 pounds, and really only want/need to lose about 5 more pounds. I'm happy with my results but also want to maintain my blood sugar. I read an article about this supplement and some of it's benefits. I wondered if anyone has an opinion about this if they've checked into it, or if they've tried it and know any more about it. Thanks for any input! She'd been to the ER yesterday and said she didn't need an ambulance. Her husband agreed. They went back to bed about 3:45. Hope they're all ok. Usually nothing happens here ... TIA Sat, 1 Nov 2014 09:25:53 EST We Are the Lucky Ones November Challenge We've all been there - overweight, undernourished, aches and pains, on a physical and emotional roller coaster, binging, tired, hungry even though we've eaten too much, and many of us with physical problems, too, like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, and so forth.

We are the lucky ones. We're the ones who have found a Way of Eating (WOE) and Way of Life (WOL) that has let us lose the extra weight, improve our nutrition, get rid of aches and pains, remove... Fri, 31 Oct 2014 02:17:37 EST The truth about carbs I was reading with interest Becky's article "The truth about High Fructose...". Having read it I was amazed that there was pretty much nothing there to disagree with. Sadly it doesn't go far enough. So let's discuss "The truth about carbs".

All carbohydrates are sugars.

olycarbo.html

Sugars are just strings of carbon and water atoms. Thu, 30 Oct 2014 11:04:57 EST Feeling a little discouraged Good morning everyone,
Just wondering everyone else's excperience with the Atkins diet and time frames for results. I started last saturday and haven't lost a thing. I am in ketosis as per my strips, and I have tested at various times of the day to ensure it wasn't just dehydration. I was on this diet about 15 yrs ago and I remember having very fast results and it was encouraging. But does anyone know about Metbolic resistance? Maybe I have a problem with that or maybe my expectations a... Thu, 30 Oct 2014 10:25:02 EST Thursday Good morning! A bit chilly this morning, mid-40's.
Taking Etienne for a glucose check later this morning. He ate well this morning, unlike yesterday, so that's a good sign! Hoping for good numbers. The vet is leaving town today and won't be back until Monday so we need to stay stable over this long period of time!

Thu, 30 Oct 2014 08:59:04 EST Hello - new here. Hello everyone! I have been battling with my weight for over 25 years. I lose and then I regain, I have probably lost and gained the same hundred pounds about 20 times. I have heard about low carb but it always seemed really difficult to do. I started it about one week ago and I am struggling! It didn't help that I was out of town for three days for my stepsons wedding. I would love to hear any tips or advice you have. I didn't realize how much I love carbs and how difficult it is to c... Wed, 29 Oct 2014 17:05:38 EST So happy to find this team and support Hi, I am new to this team, I admit I have been on SP for some time but have not been consistent. I have been on the Atkins diet before and lost 30 pounds but went back to old habits and regained that plus some more over the past 14 years. I was looking at bariatric surgery and decided that since this worked before I would give it a shot before doing something drastic. I restarted atkins on October 25 and I am down 2 lbs. I know the first week is the hardest and I am trying to stay away from t... Wed, 29 Oct 2014 13:58:18 EST Wednesday Morning! I guess I'm the early bird here, most days!!
So happy the cat had a good glucose yesterday, hoping for the same today. Getting an afternoon reading, then we're on our own until Monday, as vet is out of town until then. I do have two vets numbers as back up and ours is going to call and check on us. Last weekend he was fishing on the Gulf Coast during our emergency. This time he'll be in phone contact in case of problems!! Luckily, our cat is acting more and more like his o... Wed, 29 Oct 2014 08:54:51 EST Tuesday Morning!

Found out Walmart gave us the wrong insulin for our cat. Whether the vet told them the wrong kind or Walmart messed up, who knows. Anyway, vet had me bring my insulin in and peeled off the label and read the type and realized it was the right Brand, wrong ingredient. The one I bought cost under $30, the one I needed cost $200. Sigh. At least it will last a long time. So I bought the correct one from a different pharmacy (a locally owned one that the vet recommended) ... Sweetened with stevia and whitened with a dash of whipping cream, which I'm pretty sure is lower in carbs than milk.

Mon, 27 Oct 2014 08:17:57 EST Glad to be back here! I'm a longtime spark member, but haven't been active in ages! I am doing Atkins lifestyle. I completed 3 weeks of induction, and have now started with the ongoing weight loss. I have plenty to lose, but I wanted to shift to the slower loss rate, and be happier eating a wider variety of foods. I will stick with the plan as far as adding back carbs at a measured rate. I came back here because I really like the people that hang out on spark!. I'm a 57 & 11/12 yo father of 3, grandfather of 5 and... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 21:52:14 EST Sunday Woke up and my diabetic cat has hypoglycemia. Vet is out of town and it's a small town so there are no emergency vets like there were where we used to live. I called and left a voice mail. I put maple syrup on his gums (keep trying that every so often) to try to raise his glucose. It hurts to see him like this! I knew he wasn't feeling so good yesterday! Just wasn't quite himself and then this happened during the night. Sun, 26 Oct 2014 08:33:58 EST Am new here Hi My name is Busara and I am here trying to train my body to eat better and generally get healthy. I have always known that my body generally feels better when I do not indulge in carbs but the challenge I have always had is as soon as I feel better I drop off the wagon and a few weeks/ months later I wake up and realize I can not stand that bad feeling anymore. I would like to be able to stay motivated to make better choices and to learn to stay low carb as a lifestyle and not just for reli... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 05:02:21 EST Saturday Good morning!

I made it to my 30 pound loss goal!! Now to work on the next 10!

Well, gave the insulin shot and then was rubbing the cat's neck and noticed it was wet....the needle went through the fold of skin to the other side and missed. Sigh. I should not be giving shots first thing in the morning!! But I have no choice. So I loaded the syringe again and did it right the next time. Must be more careful in future. And it was definitely the insulin, the wet stuff w... Sat, 25 Oct 2014 07:59:16 EST Anybody try Belviq? Anyone ever try Belviq? What outcomes did you have? Fri, 24 Oct 2014 20:39:14 EST Saying Hi Hi everyone,

I'm new to the team, but not to spark. I returned after receiving some truly terrifying bloodwork and being diagnosed as Diabetic. I'm a big believer in Health at Every Size and am not here to lose weight. If I do, that's great, but if I don't it doesn't matter so long as I can get back to being healthy. I love sharing positive quotes and affirmations, am a huge animal lover and geeky gamer and tv watcher. I realized yesterday evening that you have to turn the insulin bottle upside down to make sure you are getting the insulin into the syringe. Sigh. With all the instructions from the vet on how to put air into the syringe before putting it into the bottle, how to hold the cat, the angle to put the needle into the cat, etc, he never mentioned that obvious fact!! So dear kitty was not getting insulin from me until last night. Well, now... Fri, 24 Oct 2014 08:16:36 EST Intermittent Fasting - Snacks? From my read those of us doing IF can eat as much as 50 calories without "breaking" the (daily) fast. I am not discussing the 24 hour fast where apparently one can consume 600 or so calories, but rather the daily fast.

mittent-fasting

So what can I eat as a late night snack that is less than 50 calories.

For example, I just discovered that dill pickle spears (which I happen to like) are ZERO calories. <B... I took him back to the vet for a glucose test yesterday and no change so we doubled his dose. I take him back tomorrow as vet is off today to check again. Thu, 23 Oct 2014 09:00:40 EST Excited I Found this team! Hello! Hi team! Joined Spark about a month ago, trying to stay active on it, even though it seems everyone is a calorie counter! I've lost weight on LC before and I know it works and I know it's right for me...I fell off the wagon slowly and realized I really have to get hold of myself and keep a hold. I did not gain ALL of the weight back this time (I'm a really bad yo-yo dieter), so I'm really proud of myself for catching myself. Anyways, I'm just happy I found this team.

I know I fe... Then it occurred to me that I started using the humidifier at about the same time I started handling the kittens a lot (per Virgil's instructions) and that maybe there are nasties in the humidifier that are coming out and causing problems. I've done Spark People before and had some success with it. And I've done Atkins before and had good success with it. My problem is continuing what I start - it just seems to be a problem for me. I got rid of 10 lbs earlier in the year with Atkins, and have kept it off. I want to get rid of another 10 lbs and work to keep it off. October Challenge I guess I forgot to start this thread this month, probably because my budget is on the Food Stamp Challenge thread. How are your food budgets coming? Sat, 11 Oct 2014 21:13:48 EST Saturday Got up early to get the heating thing for the kittens and folks looked like I was nuts when I asked for it. They'd never heard of it at PetSmart or Rural King. The little family owned pet store here knew what I was talking about but didn't have any in. So I ordered it online. It won't come until Monday, though. So for today I put boiling water in a quart canning jar and sealed it tightly (I hope!) and wrapped it in a towel. Wed, 8 Oct 2014 08:16:19 EST Wednesday Good morning! I wanted to sleep a bit longer but am taking three of the pets to the vet at 9. Senior dog is going for a check up on how she is doing on her heart meds, DD's dog is getting her bordatella and having her nails clipped, and my senior cat is getting her yearly shots. And since I had to feed the crew and get myself fed and showered and still have time for a leisurely cup of coffee I had to get up earlier than I wanted!

So the cats and dogs are fed, dogs have been outs... Wed, 8 Oct 2014 07:59:44 EST New! Hello! I've been low carb for over three weeks now. It was a result of a weekend where my sugar was 474 and then crashed to 79 and the next morning back up to 450. I decided after 17 years of being diabetic and 7 years of being on a huge load of insulin to make changes. I initially aimed for 18-20 carbs but now I am target 25-50 because I eat small amounts of fruit. My sugar has really great readings although my biggest problem now is trying to adjust the insulin compared to what I'm eat... Wed, 8 Oct 2014 06:41:34 EST unexpected weight gain 198 I lost weight several months ago on the Atkins Diet. My weight stabilized between 268-269. I ate all I wanted of fruit ,corn and watermelon!!! Daily I weighed in to make sure I hadn't gained weight due to what my intake was. I could not figure out why my weight did not go up. Well 2 weeks ago I decided to have bread! That was the turning point. Within 2 weeks I put on 6 lbs. I do not encourage this type of behavior for anyone but now I know what my "Hot" food item is.. No Br... Wed, 8 Oct 2014 03:48:47 EST dieter tired of dieting new to this community 53 years old and still busy ! I am extremely metabolic resistant.I live and work on an 18 acre farm raise most of my own food and can't loose weight .I don't really have time to be tracking but it seems to be the only way that works for me. I read about Fat fasting I have Dana's cookbook I have been following it pretty close I come in at around 85% fat. I have a hard time with it because I will work real hard and come in starved but I am down in one week from 225 to 219 . I look forward to f... Tue, 7 Oct 2014 15:10:49 EST Tuesday Good morning!!
It's my son's 28th birthday!! He's my oldest, out of two children.

And I'm down a pound!! Wow, that's amazing! I've been losing 1/2 pound a week more or less for two months: 5 pounds in Aug. and 5 in Sept. So we'll see how this works out, to lose 1 and a half pounds in three days. Holding my breath as it may come back tomorrow....

Yoga is on the schedule today. Aching muscles during the night mean I need some stretching today! Tue, 7 Oct 2014 08:46:13 EST Does anyone have a good pie crust recipe? MH has requested Chicken Pot Pie for dinner, and I'd like to enjoy it as well. I'm good on the all of the ingredients except the pie crust. I'm sure that there is a recipe out there somewhere for a pie crust with coconut/almond/etc flour out there, but I'd love a tried and true recipe from a fellow Sparker. Thanks! Tue, 7 Oct 2014 08:39:17 EST Monday Surprised I beat Maw to it this morning! Happy Monday!

Monday means my first day off of the week. Go back Friday night - but still going to enjoy being off Mon-Thurs!

Day One of Fat Fast was... odd. I was very busy about midnight but the Physician's scribe went down to the Dr lobby and brought me some sugar free jello and full fat cream cheese to eat while I charted. If I weren't taken I would have kissed him! He is totally awesome!

Anyways... I just thought ... Mon, 6 Oct 2014 07:05:26 EST Sunday It is so dark in the morning these days! I got up about 7 with no signs of light.

I'll help with breakfast at church today, then teach Sunday School, then in the afternoon there's a training session for volunteering at the homeless shelter this winter. I'm hoping to go out to lunch with other folks from church who will be doing the training. That's about it for the day.

Warbie is learning how to play! He's the 3 month old kitten I have who has spent almost his whole life... Sun, 5 Oct 2014 07:33:05 EST Saturday Everybody sleeping in? Sat, 4 Oct 2014 12:35:28 EST Flax and Chia Seeds (and oils) I picked up a flaxseed/chia oil today. I also saw a bag of ground chia seeds and there's flax seeds in bulk.

I wondered if there is any benefit to getting the oil, the seeds, or whatnot. The Omega-3s in the oil were superb--4:1 Omega 3s to Omega 6s. That's a fantastic ratio.

The ground seeds made me wonder if these were any good this way. I would think the VOCs would evaporate somewhat, and the ground up seeds might not be as effective. It sort of looked like grou... Sat, 4 Oct 2014 08:15:20 EST Tamale Pie Saw this on and it looks goooooood.
===================================

This is a low-carb version of the usual tamale pie. It has a relatively thin top crust (and no bottom crust). I use almond meal and whey protein powder for the crust, but you can easily vary it. If you want a "cornier" crust, you can substitute some of the almond meal for corn meal, and add a tablespoon of water for each tablespoon of corn meal you switch. There will be 1 gram of extra carbohydra... Fri, 3 Oct 2014 14:04:43 EST Friday Everyone else's week is winding down but mine starts back tomorrow. Oh well. I am up from my initial SP weigh-in but I have not been eating right. Not at the level I used to be but I am not eating like I should. I have everything planned out for foods, though. Chicken and veggie soup for the day today because it is rainy and dreary outside. Going to take a nap so I can flip to nights tonight more easily. I am staying tired lately. My body is hating the poor eating habits and is telling me tha... Fri, 3 Oct 2014 10:59:54 EST Thursday A day of miracles! Dinah went to the vet yesterday a she and came back today as Perry, a he! Turns out that his testicles were tucked up inside his body and couldn't be seen from the outside. Hence Dinah. They had planned to spay Dinah and instead neutered Perry. Both of his eyes were removed, which is a shame because he definitely had some sense out of one eye, but it wasn't in very good shape. As they told me at the shelter, he's sore from head to tail. Poor guy. He's sleeping it off in his... Thu, 2 Oct 2014 13:00:30 EST October Food Stamp Challenge Anyone up for doing it again? Or doing it for the first time? I'm going to do again this month and I hope that some of you will join me.

The basic idea is to eat for at least a week on a "food stamp budget." How you interpret that is up to you. I chose to use the average food stamp benefit actually received here in Indiana for the most recent months I can find. The average for the two months of May and June this month is $122 per person for the month. That's how much they actually... Wed, 1 Oct 2014 18:41:39 EST Wednesday Took little Dinah to the vet this morning to have her eye surgery. She'll probably be released tomorrow, but not sure whether she'll go back to the shelter and I'll pick her up from there, or if I'll pick her up from the vet. She's sure a spunky little thing! In the meantime, Warbie is lonely.

Ran some errands (including getting a rain check for Chicken of the Sea tuna for 50 cents a can), then met my new learner. She's from South Korea, the wife of a graduate student, and I'll be... Wed, 1 Oct 2014 10:57:23 EST Tis the Season for Low Carb Candy... Anyone have candy recipes they would like to share? The season of sweets is upon us and I'm hoping to have a few recipes to keep on track.
I can google recipes but I'd like to see what other low carbers have actually made and enjoy. Fat bombs included! Wed, 1 Oct 2014 08:35:12 EST Feel the Fear October Challenge Boo! Halloween, roller coasters, zombie movies - we like being scared. Sometimes. When we know, rationally, that we're safe. So why do we let fears stop us from succeeding, when, if we look at them rationally, we know we'll be ok?

This month's theme is to look at what it is that's keeping you from succeeding - with weight loss, with health, with your job, whatever. But especially with a low carb lifestyle. Is it fear of success? (What will happen if you do succeed?) Fear of failur... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 19:16:46 EST Tuesday Try to remember the kind of September...

Remember that song from The Fantastiks? I decided eons ago that if I ever married, it would be in September - because of that song. Didn't happen - in September or any other month. I had my wedding all planned out, too - except for the groom. Fall leaves and chrysanthemums in those glorious reds and scarlets and gold and yellows. Who cares that I'm allergic to the mums! Just load up on antihistimines. Oh well.

Slept in this morni... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 10:50:43 EST Monday Wow, did we all sleep in today, or what?

There are a million things on my to-do list this week, so I'm making this short and calling it to-done.

Have a great day, all! Mon, 29 Sep 2014 12:44:28 EST Sunday Going strong. Still a bit tired from fighting the infection but I am finding myself in better spirits and the nausea is not as bad as it has been. Able to keep everything down thus far. Will most likely be called off tonight due to low census in the hospital so, while I enjoy the money, I am looking forward to having the night off to spend with DH and not going back til Saturday night. I did join 3 DietBet challenges last night. One started 4 days ago, one starts Oct 7, and the other starts t... Sun, 28 Sep 2014 05:17:40 EST Thanksgiving I know, it's two months away, but MrThing was asking how to handle it, and I thought others might be wondering the same thing. More much closer to the big day, of course.

I have eaten a full Thanksgiving dinner for about the past ten years or so. I've even had a houseful of guests most years. It's not hard, but it does take some planning. And I'm sure it helps that I'm not with family so I don't have folks telling me that we HAVE to have Aunt Susie's candied sweet potatoes and Uncl... Sat, 27 Sep 2014 16:49:20 EST Saturday Yesterday ended up not being quite as choppy as I had expected. I took Goldie back to the shelter to see the vet (still has diarrhea) and while we were talking to the vet a staff member came in to talk to Virgil (shelter manager) about a couple who had surrendered four cats because of allergies, had their allergies under control, and wanted one of the cats back. They wanted Goldie! So lots of talking between the couple and Virgil, Virgil and the vet, the couple and the vet, and just about eve... Sat, 27 Sep 2014 09:16:37 EST Induction/Phase 1 questions before I get started I'm pretty clear on some of the Phase 1/Induction rules. I see that 20NC or less is my goal for the Phase 1 program and apparently I am supposed to do this until I am within 15 pounds of my goal. Well, that seems like I'll be in Phase 1 for a darned long time. I'd rather reach my goal weight quickly to stay motivated, rather than drag it out another year doing Phase 2 instead. I've been closer to Phase 3 in my current LC plan for NCs.

What I am stuck on are some of the finer po... Fri, 26 Sep 2014 18:51:30 EST TGIF! What no thread yet?? I'm never first!

I made it to Friday, and worked like crazy at a client's workplace last night so I get the whole weekend off (from him). Tonight I have no plans after work except for a face plant in bed. Woohoo! The new GM at work is still marinating in cologne and I'm going to have to tell him that I am allergic to it. The scent itself isn't bad at all - there's just too much of it and I'm allergic to something in it. Ugh.

Another long time... I can look back to when I was a kid and I was a little carb addict. Now it's 40 years later and I am still a carb addict. It's starting to take it's toll on my health as I am facing a future of diabetes if I don't do something now. It's not too late...yet.

I am on the path to educate myself and to figure out what I need to do to change. Wed, 24 Sep 2014 16:08:35 EST Wednesday Feeling much better today! I talked to my doctor before leaving work Tuesday morning and he said I had everything under control for the insect bite but if it had not improved by Friday morning to call him. I took my doxycycline on an empty stomach - STUPID me. After I expelled it the way it went in I ate something and took another. Everything is MUCH better this morning. I feel amazing - besides starving. I didn't realize it but all I ate yesterday was the Atkins Sesame Chicken and Veggies an... Wed, 24 Sep 2014 09:52:28 EST Hello...New to the team but not to low carb. I love eating low carb and was looking for an active team. My husband and I have eaten this way for the last 2 years and he is completely off blood pressure meds now. Low carb has also helped me curb daily migraines and has eliminated hot flashes. For me, sugar is evil. Lol Wed, 24 Sep 2014 06:46:49 EST How many carbs should I eat when first starting I am just starting low carb eating and I am interested in knowing how many carbs people eat at first. Do you follow net carbs or carbs. I have a big problem with binge eating at night and from what I have read the low carb eating helps in this area. I did Sugar Busters years ago and I felt great when on that program. Tue, 23 Sep 2014 21:55:46 EST low carb freezer meals Someone was looking for low carb freezer meals. Tue, 23 Sep 2014 19:50:20 EST Tuesday Went right to work on housework when I got up again today. It doesn't feel like I accomplished as much as yesterday, though I think I did. Just not as visible, I guess. Among the things I got done was to start assembling a box of emergency supplies. Just stuff from my pantry so far - tuna, canned chicken, ziplock bags, etc. I want to get as much as I can from stuff I already have before I start buying the other things that go in it.

I'll be working at the food pantry for a couple ... Tue, 23 Sep 2014 11:50:11 EST Parmesan Crusted Chicken

58/1/parmesan-crusted-chicken

I made this low carb by replacing the bread crumbs with about a teaspoon of Italian seasoning, it was awesome! I used about 1 pound of chicken breast, it only took about 25 minutes to bake. Mon, 22 Sep 2014 22:08:53 EST Free ebooks at Amazon - low carb and Paleo There were lots of free low carb and paleo cookbooks at Amazon today, so thought I'd go ahead and list them. Mostly paleo, but there's a lot of overlap. Don't know how long they'll stay free, and I know nothing about them, but there might be something you're interested in. And you can download them now and read them whenever. I have hundreds of cookbooks that I've done that with!

Here they are. Yup, didn't want to get out of bed this morning, so I'm trying to get myself fired up for a Happy Monday!

Had a more relaxing weekend than I was expecting and actually got some of the home remodeling project tools and junk our of my sanctuary! I feel much better already! It will be weeks if not months before we tackle the next ceiling project, so WHY did I let all the tools take up valuable real estate all these weeks?! Wishful thinking I guess. I was hoping to just keep moving alo... Mon, 22 Sep 2014 09:12:19 EST Keto diet questions I posted this on the Keto Clarity team but figured I would post this here too since this team is much more active. I have read some post by others here that are on a keto diet and was hoping you could shed some light.

I have been researching keto and I would like to give it a try. I used the keto calculator on the website and I'm scratching my head over my results. I have over 100 pounds to loose and my body fat percentage is pretty high but could this be correct?
... Sun, 21 Sep 2014 13:05:04 EST Sunday Sunday School and working in the church nursery this morning. Only stayed for half of Sunday School though - I started on a coughing jag and left. Had planned to play bridge this afternoon, but two of the four players can't make it. So I'll go to the animal shelter and play with dogs and cats instead. :)

Another beautiful day! Maybe I'll do some yard work when I get back. Sun, 21 Sep 2014 12:46:23 EST Coconut Oil Last year I began researching the benefits and culinary uses of coconut oil.
I am a massage therapist and had run out of massage cream and tried coconut oil.
It is now my go to oil for everything!
My wood furniture has never looked better.
Cutting boards are like new.
Love to cook with the oil.
Other things I use it for are: makeup removal, moisturizer, body oil, lip gloss, cuticle softener, oil squeaky hinges, detail my car, and the list goes on and on. <BR... Sat, 20 Sep 2014 19:10:35 EST Zucchini Not really a recipe.

I've gotten some great big zucchini at the Farmers Market. I cut a chunk off of the end and grate it using the big holes on my grater. I suppose it's really more shredded than grated. I mostly use it in two ways.

1. I add it to soup. It thickens the soup up nicely.

2. I fry it and some onion in coconut butter and then add some eggs and scramble it all together. Some diced red bell pepper adds some nice color if I happen to think about it. ... Sat, 20 Sep 2014 17:17:04 EST Saturday Looks like it will be a nice day today. I'll spend most of the morning at the library supervising the Read to a Dog program, then I may go to the animal shelter and do some reading to dogs myself. I really enjoyed it on Wednesday.

Have a great day and a great weekend! Sat, 20 Sep 2014 08:04:33 EST Just Started Low Carbing this Year. Tips anyone? Hi Team! 213

After 'killing' myself eating 'healthy' and exercising for the past 6 years and not getting consistent results, I was tres frustrated.

Anyways, earlier this year, I started eating low carb, moderate protein and high-ish Fat and that, along with some other stuff, seems to have been the most consistent thing so far. Fri, 19 Sep 2014 11:00:28 EST FRIDAY Guess whose landlord wants to sell the house?
Our lease is until next August (2015) so they can't FORCE us out.

They own both sides of the semi-detached (like a side-by-side duplex), and our side is much nicer, so I have heard. I got a brief message from the estate agent, via hubby, so will call her for more details this morning,

That said, apparently the landlords have offered us the other side (the current tenant, by my guess, are not good -- the back yard has be... Fri, 19 Sep 2014 03:49:15 EST Thursday Got the stuff the handyman needs to finish putting up the grow lights and the shelves. At least, I hope I got the right stuff. Which is 5-10 degrees below normal, but better than the highs in the 60s that we have been having. I surely do love having the doors and windows open.

Goldie is doing much better. His face is all cleared up and when I took him to the shelter to have his ears cleaned out again, there wasn't nearly as much crud. Something seems to be working. Now if we can only get rid of ... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 10:38:27 EST ground turkey ratatouille I just wanted to share this recipe I posted. It's basically just meat, vegetables, and a little oil. 8 net gram carbs, so I plan on eating 2 servings for a total of 16 net gram carbs daily during my induction phase. I prefer seasoning it with rosemary but you can try other things. If you want to cut back on the carbs, use half or no tomatoes (although, tomato is the essence of a ratatouille, without it it is something else). Here you go

l.a... Tue, 16 Sep 2014 09:41:03 EST Monday This business of waking up around 3:00 or 4:00 and not being able to get back to sleep is for the birds! Though actually, this time of year, even the birds aren't up yet.

Bridge this afternoon but that's all that's planned for today.

Hope you all have a good day and a great week. Mon, 15 Sep 2014 04:29:58 EST Salad dressing thoughts, ideas? I've been making an olive oil-apple cider vinger (ACV) vinaigrette for the last month. It fits well with the LC plan.

But lately I've grown tired of it, and the ACV is a bit too acidic to have all the time. Today I opted for the Newman's Own ranch. By count, it was 16g fat, maybe 2g protein, and 1 Net Carb. So as far as LC goes, it seems excellent. But the first ingredient is soybean oil, and lots of other things I don't like.

I started out paleo but have adapated... Sun, 14 Sep 2014 22:25:14 EST Sunday I'm off to "the farm" this morning. A 30 minute drive out of the city, more or less a farmers market but at the farm itself.

I bought a seasonal basket, so I get certain things each week. It forced me to try vegetables I hadn't tried before, which was great. This late in the season there are more and more potatoes in the pickup. I give the potatoes away, but I always feel guilty about that, like giving others the arsenic that you won't eat. Sun, 14 Sep 2014 09:04:22 EST Cordain (Paleo) and Bittman to speak at IU! Indiana University, in Bloomington (where I live) is having a themester this fall on food issues. For more events, check out

If anyone is nearby and wants to go to anything, let me know. I'm planning on going to at least the Cordain and Bittman lectures,... Sat, 13 Sep 2014 09:50:34 EST Saturday Not often I start a post anymore.

It got downright cold last night. My stubbornness to not turn the heat on until October has proved to be stupid. I woke up early this morning and couldn't go back to sleep because I was cold. Even my feet, which had thick slippers on. I gave up and flipped the heat on as soon as I got up. At least the sun is out today after 3 days of gloom. Should be a beautiful day!

Have a funeral to go to in Minnesota today, driving my parents. My s... Sat, 13 Sep 2014 09:36:13 EST easy pickle recipe? I have about 12 cucumbers that I need to use and they are not the pickling type (but I heard they can still be used). Video how-tos always make it easier to do! Fri, 12 Sep 2014 13:00:59 EST Friday Cool and overcast. Not bad at all.

I take the poor cat to the vet today. His eyes are horrible and there's goop dripping from them down his face and it looks like the skin under the goop is raw. And yesterday I took him to the shelter because he was bleeding from his ear, but apparently only because he'd been scratching it so hard. They cleaned out his ears again - third time in less than a week - and brought out great gobs of gunk. I feel like I'm not doing a very good job of taki... Fri, 12 Sep 2014 10:23:54 EST Home-Made Mayo? Anyone have a good (and easy) recipe?

I saw one, ages ago, with raw egg. I presume that must be okay?

Thanks in advance!
Debb
XOX Fri, 12 Sep 2014 07:37:45 EST Tuna, hold the mayo I love tuna, packed in water. I eat it mixed with Mayo, tomato and celery as a low carb sandwich. My problem is I did not want to measure the mayo, I just get a bog glob and mix. So I hadn't a clue on calories, though it is HIGH.

I love avocados. Today it occurred to me to replace the mayo with an avocado. Avos are great for us, and they have that same creamy oily texture and a great flavor. So today I made a new recipe.

1) 3 cans of Tuna
2) 1 large beefsteak... Thu, 11 Sep 2014 16:32:31 EST Thursday Storms last night but not nearly as bad as predicted. At least not here. I guess they were bad elsewhere. High today of 69, highs for the next 10 days mid 60s to mid 70s, or about 10 degrees below average.

Booked my trip home at Christmas. Was able to use frequent flyer miles and get the aisle bulkhead seats. No one will be reclining in my lap! I have to stay in Twin Falls for a little over a month to get the cheapest FF rates. Oh, the joys of being retired!

A few erran... Thu, 11 Sep 2014 07:44:13 EST Wednesday Absolutely nothing scheduled for the whole day! In fact, all I have scheduled for the rest of the week is taking the cat to the shelter to see the vet. Poor thing had an eye infection and the skin all around his eyes and half way down his nose is all raw and oozy. The shelter staff couldn't figure it out so we see the vet, who comes in Friday afternoons. Poor baby (cat, not the vet) really doesn't feel well. He spends as much time as possible on my lap.

Saw the doctor yesterday and... Wed, 10 Sep 2014 09:58:43 EST Recipes for low-carb dairy/soy-free protein bars? I really need something healthy that my daughter can eat after her swim workouts. I've been thinking of some combo of almonds/almond meal/almond butter, hemp seed and coconut oil, maybe 90% dark chocolate, possibly flavored with cinnamon. If it were no-bake that would make it easier. I've also thought about something that includes eggs for higher protein content. If anyone has a recipe I'd be interested.
Birgit Wed, 10 Sep 2014 00:10:29 EST Another study showing LC better than low fat This study was on the news this week:

00694
Tue, 9 Sep 2014 22:20:28 EST New! Been down this road before 10 -15 years ago I am starting a low carb lifestyle next week. I was on Atkins for about 5 years back in college and have been on lots of different systems since then. I was at my thinnest (if you can say that) on Atkins and it seems to keep me satisfied as well. So I am going back down this low carb road. I have been on HCG in order to fit into a bridal shower dress because I gained 25 lbs in about 6 months and have to fit into it this weekend! It is happening, but I want off the HCG. It is too hardcor... Tue, 9 Sep 2014 10:41:37 EST Tuesday Doctor's appointment this afternoon to talk about the bronchitis/asthma/allergies or whatever it was I had. And which is pretty much over, thank goodness! Will do a bit of grocery shopping while I'm on that side of town.

Got two big boxes of books on Free Day at the library's book sale. Mostly cookbooks. Which I'll copy the best sounding recipes from and then donate to the food pantry. I got some cook books that I have no interest in but that sounded like they might be something t... Tue, 9 Sep 2014 09:18:57 EST low carb trumps low calorie I am still struggling with which diet is the best for me...low carb or low calorie. The main thing I struggle with low carb is not allowing fruit. When I do low carb I am never hungry but I feel like I am heavy with the fat intake and that makes me physically feel like I am doing bad things to my body and blood. Then I start craving fruit and chocolate. I never give the low carb more than a few days before I am back on the low calorie, low fat, high carb diet. I have been doing this for years... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 10:04:50 EST Monday The Friends of the Library had their book sale this weekend. Today everything is free. I'll go down and probably pick up a bunch of cookbooks, maybe some other books, too. They have thousands of books left after the sale ends and I used to think I was being cheap and taking advantage of them by only taking them when the books are free. Turns out their glad to get rid of them because otherwise they have to dispose of the books themselves.

That's about all I have planned for today. ... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 06:44:48 EST Low carbing and need lots of help Hi everyone,
This team was recommended to me. I really want to do low carb, but I always fail at the plans that are too strict and have way too much work to them. Is there a simple way to keep yourself on track without having to cook three meals a day? I work 10-12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week and have no time for that. I don't mind counting carbs, but I just can't do all this cooking. Sun, 7 Sep 2014 21:06:58 EST Gallbladder Pain Ever since I started Keto last week, I have gallbladder pain after my meals. Does anyone else have this problem and what did you do about it? Sun, 7 Sep 2014 12:07:42 EST Sunday Woke up a few times with really bad heartburn for some reason, and ate to try to get it under control. So too much food after midnight and not enough sleep. Oh well.

MrThing, you mention on the Wall about doing Keto now and later switching to low carb. Tell me more about it, please. What exactly do you mean? Both the terms Keto and low carb get thrown around a lot and they seem to be rather imprecise. Do you mean Induction when you say Keto?

Went to the Farmers Market ye... Sun, 7 Sep 2014 09:01:13 EST New to Team Hopeing this works Hi, I have been on spark since 2010 when I started my weight loss journey, I was so excited and so ready to do what ever it took to get the weight off. and it worked I mean I followed every bit of suggestions, spark article, tips tricks and I worked out a lot well the weight did come off I was 330lbs and I dropped 90 and I really have kept it off except 10 came back on over the Holidays of 2013.. I have struggled since January 2014 to lose this 10 and the rest to get to my goal weight of 180.... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 20:08:51 EST Insulin Resistance and starting over with Atkins Hi!! I have been away from Spark for a few years. Was trying so hard to get my weight down and nothing was working. After spending the past year going to doctors I was finally referred to an endocrinologist and was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance. I am now on meds to help with the weight loss and other issues related to this. The meds are supposed to help in conjunction with some sort of diet, so I am trying the Atkins diet since it eliminates the carbs and sugars that I cannot pro... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 16:09:31 EST ALDI has grass-fed beef! OMG! You could have knocked me over with a feather! I don't know if this is something brand new or I just noticed it. I never buy their "fresh" meat. It's full of saltwater and has a nasty texture. So I don't know what caught my eye about this little one pound package, but there it was, 100% organic 100% grass-fed ground beef! I'm so happy! My local grocery stores just don't carry it.

I really don't know why my side of town doesn't have ANY of the good food choices, even though we... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 10:54:20 EST free ebook - Go Atkins without breaking the bank Just ran across this free kindle book. Haven't read it but thought I'd share it anyway. I stayed up for it, though, and didn't get to bed until late. "Slept in" this morning - didn't get up at 4! Slept until about 6:30. Haven't checked to see if it's raining. If not, or not very much, I may try to get to the Farmers Market. Have only been three or four times (actually, I think it's only two or three) instead of weekly like I usually do. Depending on how much that exhausts me, I'd like to go to... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 07:04:24 EST Friday It is Friday, isn't it? I get my days mixed up.

Woke up a little after 3 again this morning, so got up and took my thyroid pill which needs to be taken at least two hours before my prednisone, which needs to be taken with breakfast. Then I have to sit up for at least half an hour. Worked on my food pantry blog which is due this morning. I'll go back to bed in a little bit.

The a/c repair guy is coming today to check out my system. No problems, though it probably needs a... Fri, 5 Sep 2014 04:17:19 EST Lard? My kids have not enjoyed my attempts at LC biscuits (coconut flour) using butter or coconut oil. Anyone use Lard in their LC diet? I "searched" our forum but no Lard comments were found!
Thanx! Thu, 4 Sep 2014 22:04:28 EST MIM/OIM Muffin in a Minute/One Minute Muffin MrThing is looking for good snack options, and MIM/OIMs haven't come up lately. Thu, 4 Sep 2014 08:59:38 EST THURSDAY---It's storming here in WI! Breathe in . . . breathe out! Don't mind the rain . . .it's the wind and the sirens. Thu, 4 Sep 2014 08:23:56 EST Water consumption and weight loss Sort of a random question, but all the nutrition folks always say 'drink more water'. But there would appear to be a limit to the amount at some point---right?

I find if I chug water I stay hydrated, but I'd swear that the weight loss slows. It might just be water retention, but it seems tricky to manage. I don't drink a gallon a day and wouldn't want to drink too little, but I'm not sure what is ideal.

Some say 'look at your pee' but I take a lot of B-vitamins, so th... Wed, 3 Sep 2014 07:30:42 EST Wednesday Slept a little bit better last night. I kept waking up very hour or so, but I least I went right back to sleep. Usually. Woke up about 3:30 and couldn't get back to sleep, so got up about 4:00 and took my thyroid pill. I'm supposed to take it a couple of hours before the prednisone (actually, before any of the other pills, but I've taken them together for so long that the pharmacist said not to worry about them) and stay sitting or standing for 30 minutes afterwards. So here I am, doing my sp... Wed, 3 Sep 2014 04:28:48 EST It's Never Too Late to Learn September Challenge There's so much to learn about this way of life on which we're embarked! All the studies and science about nutrition and exercise, and how we each, individually, respond to different foods and regimes, including both physically and emotionally.

Let's take this month and really work at learning about the science and about ourselves, so we can give our best to this way of eating and way of life and get the best out of it. We're so worth it!

(Hope you don't mind my preempt... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 10:50:45 EST September Food Stamp Challenge The goal of this challenge is to eat on a "food stamp budget." Define it however you like! I'm defining it myself as the average food stamp benefit actually received per person in Indiana according to the most recent stats I can find. The average benefit received in April and May of this year in Indiana was $120, so that's my goal. To make it stick, if I go over $120 I am going to donate the entire amount I spend (not just the excess by all of it) to our local food pantry. That should give me... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 06:43:01 EST The evidence is piling up Wonder what so-called nutrition expert Becky Hand would say about this?

/344315405/cutting-back-on-carbs-not-f
at-may-lead-to-more-weight-loss

Hard to argue with science Tue, 2 Sep 2014 06:38:17 EST Tuesday So my Monday/Tuesday went well food wise. I did get some pulled BQQ pork from the cafe but I could barely eat any of it along with a few spears of broccoli and some nacho cheese. I just couldn't eat much. I LOVE the Chicken Chile Lime Burgers from Trader Joe's, though. I ate one of those and cheese for breakfast and then half of one and some onions, peppers, and mushrooms in cream cheese and habanero cheese for my dinner... Ended up eating only 1200 calories and at about 60% fat.

... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 05:28:45 EST New to team, trying to learn more I am new to this team and trying to learn how to make things low carb. My doctor told me she wants me on a "modified" Atkins diet and to not eat grains. Haven't got quite to the no grains yet because I don't have the money to replace the grains I already have here. I have done Atkins once before, but it was many years ago when he first came out with one and managed to lose 12 pounds and then nothing more.

Does anyone know what "modified" would mean? I can get fairly low carb,... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 14:23:08 EST So it looks like Russell is off Spark I was perusing my blog subscriptions, and when I clicked on him, I was informed that "We couldn't find that user."

Has anyone communicated with him elsewhere? I'd like to know if he left voluntarily before I go blast Becky. Mon, 1 Sep 2014 13:58:20 EST What's your food budget? September Challenge I came in right about where I planned to last month, real close to $150. I had to guess on a few things, like the allocation of a trip to Walmart between food, medicine and household supplies. But it's really close to $150. And my freezer is getting really empty!

My budget for September is $120, which is the average food stamp benefit received per person in Indiana in April and May of this year. And that's $120 for all food, with no relying on the food in the freezer and fridge an... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 05:24:00 EST Sept - Hunger Action Month/Food Stamp Challenge Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, designated September as Hunger Action Month. Last year their main push was to get people to try eating on a Food Stamp budget for a week. They're pushing more action this year, trying to get the word out about the roughly 20% of Americans who are food insecure - the new politically correct way to refer to people who don't have enough to eat. Here's a link to the main page about it.

er-action-m... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 05:14:50 EST Monday Happy Labor Day!

Nothing planned for today except getting the house in shape for a cat or some kittens. I'll pick them up Tuesday or possibly Wednesday. The house feels sort of empty without animals.

I had planned to start my September Food Stamp Challenge today, but the store where I'll buy almost everything is closed for the holiday. I'll start tomorrow, instead, and go through October 1. Yikes! October!

I just read in the paper that it is acceptable to wea... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 04:27:40 EST Drop kicking the carbs to lower my glucose well I just joined the family here,... to get my mind into the mindset.

I joined SP back in 2008 and lost about 67 lbs. I was well on my way until I had a bike accident and jacked up my knee. I had knee surgery and recovered and went back to work. So I stayed where I was for a while (weight wise) and then I slowly slid into a less healthy lifestyle going from 187 to 206 again. I know - I want to cry when I think about it.

I recently went to the doctor and got my la... Sun, 31 Aug 2014 18:13:34 EST Sunday I'm tired of waking up before dawn even thinks of cracking and not being able to go back to sleep! However, I certainly do like waking up able to breath! Don't know if it's the prednisone or the inhaler or it it was just time for the original meds to kick in, but I feel so much better. I know they're just masking the symptoms, but I sure do like being able to take a deep breath.

Nothing planned for the day except maybe some grocery shopping. Not sure about that for two reasons. One... Sun, 31 Aug 2014 05:52:27 EST Kombucha questions I was suggested by a Sparker to try Kombucha. I bought my first bottle ($3 a bottle?!) and tried it for the probiotics. I am having some recurrent fungal infections that antibiotics brought on--killed the ear infection, but brought on jock itch.

I was eating yogurt before the LC switch, but the yogurt carbs are way too high and apparently lactose was screwing me up (wish I had known!). Limiting dairy (just cheese and sour cream) has helped considerably. I've recently started m... Sun, 31 Aug 2014 03:50:50 EST Anyone on Ideal Protein? Anyone on Ideal Protein and using copy cat alternatives? Sat, 30 Aug 2014 14:50:25 EST Saturday Got a good night's sleep last night and I can breath this morning! It feels so wonderful!

Was finding it increasingly difficult to take a full breath, so went back to the Walk in Clinic yesterday evening. (If you want to be seen quickly, gasp out your name and date of birth and when the receptionist tells you to breath slowly and take a deep breath, tell you can't! It helps if there are only two other people in the waiting room.) Anyway, saw the nurse right away and then the doctor... Sat, 30 Aug 2014 06:07:37 EST Free Groceries but how do I cook a beet? I was given a whole wack of groceries today, including a small beet and a end cut (about 6 to 8 inches by about 4 inches across) of a zucchini (I think it is a zucchini ????) Boy is it big....

I also got lots of salad fixings, several different fruits, a couple of minute steaks and several fast fry pork chops and a box FULL of tinned goods, a box of Rice a Roni, 3 boxes of Kraft Dinner and a Cake mix........

Boy, I am one lucky lady......

Anyone have any go... Fri, 29 Aug 2014 19:05:08 EST Friday Nothing planned except trying to get my health insurance stuff straightened out. I don't know if it's just their computer or what, but I have FOUR explanations of benefits for the same items, approving them, disapproving them, reversing them, applying my deductible (I have no deductible on my plan), saying I owe all of it or twice as much as was billed... Yikes.

Other than that, slowly trying to get my house cleaned up. Very slowly. I did manage to catch the sanitation engineers :)... Fri, 29 Aug 2014 10:02:23 EST Thursday Another hot and humid day. Sure wish I could open up the house and air it out! Oh well. Soon.

Nothing on the agenda except taking a few things back to the shelter. Not all of it, but the stuff I think they may need. Like the pen I have set up in my living room. A couple of tiny little leashes. And, most important, Maize's bed. Maybe she'll feel better there all alone if she has her own bed.

No plans for the weekend, either. How about you? What are your plans? Thu, 28 Aug 2014 10:13:29 EST Carb Binge! Staying away from the scale for a week. My eating has gotten out of control these past 2 days. Having episodes of hypoglycemia, blood sugar too low, causing me to keep eating without satisfaction. I think I need to add more carbs. All this hard work on the Atkins induction diet 20 net carbs, and I just binged on 145 carbs! It was a fruit and sweet potato binge. No junk, refined sugars, grains, or gluten. Still... it's a huge set back. I'm very disappointed with myself. Over ate by 1,500 calor... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 20:05:45 EST Wednesday Might do the things today that I didn't do yesterday - return the book, pick up new books, take dogs to shelter. Or I may not. Planning to mostly take it easy today.

Was out of chicken broth, so I cooked up some thighs from the freezer in the pressure cooker, then took the meat off the bones and returned the bones and some smoked ham hocks to the cooker and cooked for a couple of hours. Not as strong as my usual bone broth (which is likely to cook for 24+ hours in the slow cooker) ... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 08:32:41 EST Tuesday I need to return a book to the food pantry and pick up a book at the library and take the dogs to the shelter to visit for an hour or two. I think I'll take the dogs in and stay with them for a little bit, then run the errands and come home, then go pick them up later. I hope that they'll be so glad to see someone they know that they'll both be happy to see me! Maize lets me pet her, and even climbs halfway on my lap when I'm on the floor in the pen. Sable still runs to the other corner. But ... Tue, 26 Aug 2014 09:42:01 EST
