Without even a potty break. Feels good. Took the dog for a walk, then came in to play on the computer a bit before making a few phone calls, then heading over to my house to water. Then to the doctor's (a visit with the NP to get instructions on having a colonoscopy - ugh!), then probably back to the house. They're supposed to come over today to fix the leak in my sprinkler box. I want to be there to make sure they know ... I'm 44-years-old, I've been married 21 years, we have two teenage sons, and I work from home as an author/freelance writer. My oldest son (who's 18) is a Type 1 diabetic, and my husband has Type 2 diabetes, and we're all trying to live a healthier, low-carb lifestyle. I'm at my highest recorded weight of 350 pounds, so I have a very long road ahead of me, and I look forward to making new friends so we can help encourage each other. Wishing you all the ... I decided to get back to the basics of after surgery which was to eat protein first, veggies/fruit and maybe some carbs. Dr. appointment this morning (new PCP, since I just got here - always a bit nervous about that), then bridge this afternoon. A visit to my house somewhere along the way to see how the carpet looks and how Gary's done with the painting. And that's about it. It should fill up most of the day quite nicely.

According to yesterday's paper, the high today is supposed to be 73! Maybe I'll mow the lawn tonight, too. Finally got up about 1:00 and took a couple of tylenol and another of my RLS pills (it's ok - it's still withing the prescribed range) and read for a little bit, then went back to bed and was out until almost 9 this morning. I have slowly been eliminating processed foods from my diet and while I am eating a good bit more fruit (and therefore carbs) it is the process that is working for me. I tried doing a 50g NC a day without even transitioning and I about lost it. Only thing that saved me was my fruit. So, I am switching from sweets to fruit a... Walked the dog this morning, then went to my house to water and then to the Farmers Market. Squeaky cheese, a huge head of cabbage and some Zuke Dog Bread. Which, presumably, was made with zucchini and for dogs but did not include dogs. (See Woubbie's post yesterday re loving cats.) Came home and trimmed the apple tree (a family project) and scheduled a visit from my niece the first week of next month. I hope I'm in my new house by then. I warned her that I would have just m... Fri, 17 Jul 2015 08:40:21 EST Thursday - The week's going downhill! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x62025091 Have you ever noticed how "downhill" has two diametrically opposed meanings? It can either mean it's getting better and easier (as in when you're riding your bike and you reach the top of the hill and start down the other side) or it can mean that things are falling apart. Take your pick. I'm going with the first meaning, myself.

Spent all morning at the house, Home Depot and Lowe's. I woke up early and did my knee exercises for the first time in several days, then walked the dog and cleaned up the piles in the back yard. Went over to the house so I'd be there when the washer and dryer and microwave were delivered. There's a very small ornamental type area in the front of the house that I weeded, then did some weeding along the side of the... I'm not terribly familiar with it, but looking forward to learning about it. I know it's going to be a change for me, because I LOVE carbs, but I'm probably better off cutting them out completely (almost) as opposed to having them in moderation, which has not worked very well for me.

Would love any help anyone has to offer as to recipes or any other advice.

Donna

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 09:26:18 EST Induction slump http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=79x482x62010569 Well I'm on to week two and feeling really good about my progress. I'm starting to see the scale move and my clothes are already fitting differently which is really helping to keep me motivated. I am kind of in a food slump though. I have been eating foods that all just feel like the same thing over and over. Breakfast is usually some sort of egg dish. This last week was omelets and scramble bowls with bacon or sausage. Lunch is usually a salad or leftovers from dinner, and dinner has pretty ... Tue, 14 Jul 2015 18:54:41 EST Tuesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x62008785 I wrote up a post about my day and, on reading it, found it was rather a downer. It's been that kind of a day - lots of little annoyances but nothing that couldn't be - and wasn't - easily resolved. Don't you hate that kind of day? There are times I think I'd rather have something big happen instead of a bunch of petty things! I do know better, of course, but petty little things can sure be annoying.

However, it's a good day, we got some much needed rain (not much, but every little... Mostly lean meats and salads etc.

I've gotten all nervous since, thinking that perhaps I'm fooling myself into thinking high fat is good. Sorry! I'm still getting accustomed to Spark... it's a little different from when I was on here before... or else my memory is failing. That could be it too.

I didn't sleep well last night. Sat, 4 Jul 2015 08:40:27 EST Funky Friday http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x482x61915216 Good morning! I'm up - I could have slept in this morning but DH got me up... also got our son up and he had the day off too. Oh well... I have a to-do list so I'll get started on it earlier. I don't have many days off so I have to play catch-up - especially since DH is retired and I expect him to take certain responsibilities here that he doesn't. So I go on strike and refuse to do things - and then they pile up and bite me in the butt. I should just go ahead and do them instead of havi... As far as exercise goes, this is more of a 'stretching' warm up for me. I've lost a total of 11 lbs, and I'm noticing that I haven't really been losing much the past 2-3 weeks. There are probably a number of reasons for this.

Firstly I've started putting whole milk in my coffee instead of cream, simply because it's easier to get hold of milk and the bottle is bigger so lasts longer. I felt like I was always out shopping for cream otherwise.

I've decided that I ... And then leave, with the house unlocked. Can you believe it? I told them in no uncertain terms that that was not acceptable (Twin is a pretty safe town and it's a good neighborhood, but still!) so he agreed to call me when he gets word that it's been recorded and I can... (So, any of the guys on the board - if you ever get shingles, you know what a woman goes through!) 198

I'm about 95% healed (I still get some pain, occasionally - but I'm off the heavy narcotics and ibuprofen).
... LOL). Sunday was a major sugar blow-out and I've already posted about the awful cramp in my leg and hip that resulted from that! In a way I'm glad it happened, even though it was agony. I'm really determined this week and have been focused, writing my food down, planning every meal etc. It's an easy week because I have no plans to go anywhere, I'm just studying and writing, walking the dog etc. I'm in control, and can't say t... The problem is that I am having cravings around period time. What do you do when those cravings hit. This is the only time I have wanted something off the diet. There is nothing in particular that I am craving just carbs.

What do you women do around this time of the month? Tue, 9 Jun 2015 18:25:21 EST Tuesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x61718390 Goodness! The day's practically over, even clear out here in the West!

This morning I met with someone from the Refugee Center. Our community college has a refugee resettlement program, where they bring in State Department sponsored refugees and teach them how to live in America, including learning English, getting a job, and so forth. I asked how I signed up (it sounds like fun - and the learning how to live in America was what I liked best about the tutoring I did in Indiana) and... I'm going to work a partial day and then maybe go work at the range. It's a warm day and this boot is going to be even warmer! Mon, 8 Jun 2015 11:54:55 EST Sugar cramps! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x61703868 I've been doing quite well. Last week I stayed the same weight, which I was pretty happy with because I'd spent 2 days with friends and been super busy and had probably over-eaten even if it was LC.

But something hit me at around 4pm yesterday. I was at a carboot sale in the morning with my dog. I was one of the sellers (getting rid of junk) and normally my dog is fine. Up until a week or so ago I admit, I was one of those people. There is a huge amount of information that can be researched with regards to low-carb diets, but trying to decipher what information is to be believed, and what information is simply myth is another thing.
Even the so called 'experts' have different opinions on the subject.

The failure rate for low-carb diets is high because, just like with any d... Sun, 7 Jun 2015 14:51:54 EST Sunday http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x61697319 Just found out that the Ag Dept at our junior college (I guess they're called community colleges these days) has u-pick veggies in the summer. Tomatoes, beans, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, zucchini, cukes, eggplant, etc. - for 75 cents a pound! Also three kinds of raspberries (yellow, red and purple) for $3.50 a pound. It's hardly worth growing my own! At least, it's not worth fussing with trying to get in a garden this summer. I don't know how they grow their veggies, how organic and so f... Not my kind of event. I'll need to get there an hour early to get decent seats. For Max's, two years ago, we sat in nearly the last row, and the chairs were actually subtle torture devices. She didn't feel she could leave him alone long enough to come to the house or to eat out. They had prime rib at the cafeteria! A big slab, plus potatoes and veggies for $7.99. I did it 10 years ago and lost 31 pounds. I just restarted last Thursday. I had the Day 2 Sugar detox headache but since then I seem to feel great. Perhaps it's a coincidence, but since I have restarted this plan, my ankle has not been swollen and my foot does not hurt one bit.

I hope I can keep it up :-) Mon, 1 Jun 2015 22:12:11 EST The first Monday in June http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x61644407 Wow, I got off to a rocky start this morning at work. I had left my computer on on Friday to defragment it, so when I came in the morning I restarted it. Sheesh! I don't know WHAT it thought it had to download - no one else had any trouble - but it hung and hung and hung, all the while advising me NOT to shut the computer down. So I logged in at one of the spare computers, and was just getting my email open when our new temp came in and, well, needed a place to sit. I had reconnected a few ca... My name is Leanna. 213

I've just recently experimented with low carb eating (like maybe a week) and am seeing the scale move already! I've NEVER tried or read anything about low carb eating, so I m eager to learn more. It finally worked itself out, but today my calf still feels tight and hurts, especially when I walk down stairs. I remember getting them years ago when I first did LC, but it still kind of worried me, it seemed so much worse than any in the past.

I heard something about concerns about dangerous blood clots breaking off (or something like that). Everyone says that getting burned or even tanned contributes to skin cancer. But, as the Paleo movement people say, we need Vitamin D and it doesn't make evolutionary sense that the source of something we need would kill us. I figure it's probably something in the diet that reacts with the sun to make the deadly rays. Anyway, it's getting to be summer, so don't forget the sunscreen, if you think it's important.

The Senior Center has homemade c... I need to get insurance for my new car (Oops! I should be doing that instead of posting here!), then get it licensed, and take it back to the dealer for a few things they forgot to put in it, like the spare tire stuff. Mom wants to get the dog groomed, and we'd go grocery shopping at the same time, since it's right next door. Maybe go to Office Max at the same time, since it's on the other side of the groomers. I have so much going on at the moment and most of it is reaching a climax by Sunday (my next weigh in day). I've not had time to go shopping so began eating whatever was here, resulting in high carb meals. And I've over indulged (stress eating I think),on even low carb foods so a bit of a mess overall.

I'm always at risk of getting confused or giving up when I hit this kind of bump. I figure he knows what he's doing and I don't. Not that I'm leaving all of the decisions to him. I went through the house and made a detailed list of what I want done, and discussed it with him. I did, once. In high school. We had a potluck dinner for the various language clubs, and someone from French Club brought snails. I ate one. Swallowed it whole. The garlic butter sauce was pretty good, but I'd much rather just eat garlic butter sauce with a spoon!

Church this morning, then I need to plant a few of the extra plants I bought, and do some weeding. Super easy when grocery shopping and reading labels.

BTW, yes hubby might think that to loose weight you need to cut calories, and fat has the most calories per gram, but the goal is not to eat the most volume of stuff, the goal is not to be hungry while loosing weight. Well, around 9:00 last night I was hungry and went to grab a deviled egg, but saw the new Reeses Peanut Butter cereal that I bought for my kids (I know, total cr*p food). Anyway, next thing I knew, I was pouring a bowl of it with milk. I told myself at the time that I wouldn't feel guilty and that I would trac... Thu, 30 Apr 2015 09:45:28 EST Is it Keto Flu or just a cold? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x482x61354808 Hi all. I have been low carb for about 10 days now and have been losing weight and feel great. Carb have stayed under 50, although my goal is Atkins Induction, so many of the days have been around 20.

Anyway, yesterday I woke up with stuffy head, headache and clogged sinuses. I have not been sick in ages (well over a year or more). Is this the signs of the Keto Flu that I have heard about, or did I just get a cold?

I know, kind of a silly question, but at least it wi... I feel like it's some kind of knee jerk reaction to trying to do IF/bulletproof coffee... Ugh!!!

I listened to this health summit thing recently. It was days of clever holistic health type people talking about controlling your health with food and exercise, all mostly low carb, and there was a lot of people recommending fasting. Looking back, I've had more oil and fat than I would ever have on a 'diet'. But to be honest, when you think about all the hidden fats and oils in junk food, including icecream etc., I'm not really eating more fat than I would when I'm eating rubbish... except I'm not getting all that sugar. And that makes me know that what I'm doing on low carb isn't unhealthy... it's just allowing to eat what I want, so long as I exclude the unhealthy carbs... I'm glad the Internal Controls department didn't choose this month to audit me! I accidentally "broke" the database I used to have set up for the task, and during that busy time of the year I had no time to find someone to fix it. I... Thu, 9 Apr 2015 10:10:08 EST Hello! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x482x61161544 Hi Everyone. I've had a weight issue almost my entire life. To my own amazement, I lost a significant amount of weight on the "old" Atkins diet back in the mid 90s but more importantly, I felt GREAT during that time! But then in 1999, I became pregnant with my last child and gained it all back and then some. I got so discouraged that 15 years later, I haven't lost another pound. I also let myself be convinced that Atkins was not healthy but over the years, I have come to realize that suga... A couple of suggestions were that it was a day to reflect on the beauty of nature or that it was a day for sharing, based on the "ours." I guess I'm just a basically selfish person. I read it to mean that everything is ours, and the rest of them don't get any. My "our" seems to be pretty limited!

Anyway, not much planned for the day except a tutoring session and a visit to my ... It's about carrying on with a smile after you've been rejected. How many times have we let a small rejection (that often wasn't even intended as such) ruin or day or kept us from doing something we wanted to do? Stop it!

One thing that bugs me is when people are afraid to ask you something because you might say no. I really don't know why I stopped, it just kinda happened gradually. The day I decided to go on Atkins was January 5th 2015, this is the same day my father-in-law passed away. He lived with us and, sadly, my 12 year old son found him in his room. I decided to keep going with Atkins because he really wanted me to become healthy. It was a bit of an experiment for me. I have been pretty much in Atkins phase 1 for like, six weeks. I have been eating bacon, beef, pork, salads, leafy veggies, not much cheese but, a little. I figured my cholesterol would be high and my blood work would be scary. It was really pretty great. My cholesterol is actually down. Yea, down.. Put all of your business records on their system and never have to dig through drawers and boxes of paper again! In the past we have eaten the free breakfast buffet at the hotel, grabbed gas station sandwiches and chips at lunch and eaten in a restaurant at dinner. I know, awful food!

Now that I am low-carb, those ideas won't work. Hotel breakfast buffets are pretty much all carb, and sandwiches, chips, and most other gas station food options are out. I am not following one specific plan, but somewhere in between Atkins and Paleo. Atkins because it's low carb, Paleo because I am trying to eat grass-fed, natural, and have also added sweet potatoes. No induction for me because I have a couple medical issues that prevent me. With that said, weight is falling off, clothes fitting better, and energy through the roof! I went to the animal shelter about 8:30 to try to get Magic to eat. He wasn't interested. I think I need to stay there longer. Came home and did a very quick tidying (thanks, FlyLady and Woubbie!) and a rep from a moving company came to get info to do an estimate. A rep from another moving company comes at 11:00. I'll go back to the shelter about 3:30 to hand out with Magic again and maybe get him to eat. Then groc... The kitchen stuff, a few pictures, and some knick knacks. I'll pack the non-breakables and the I'm-not-terribly-concerneds. I have tried every diet out there over the last year and failed on all of them. The only one I was successful at was low carb. Even that one I hit a wall after the induction period. About a month ago after speaking to my doctor he put me on low carb, but not Atkins. No sugars , breads, pasta, fruits, nothing with gluten. I am to eat a lot of meat, cheese, low carb yogurt, and a lot of green vegetables. Of course vegetables have carbs an... It's not final and finished and all that - there's still the inspection and appraisal and all - but it's definitely getting close. Their offer says that it's supposed to close on or before May 11. That's partly because I don't exercise much, and I'm also not eating enough protein to maintain lean muscle mass. So I need to eat some more protein too.

But the problem is, other than meat, it is tough to find LC and LF sources of protein. Whey powder is almost all protein unless they add sugar to it.
