I know this team is basically dead, but on the off chance someone actually does poke their head in here...

I got some new plates (well, used, but new to me) on my skates a month or so ago. They're 45 degree kingpin plates, and my old ones were probably 10. The new plates are really nice, but they don't feel quite right, and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to tell if they're adjusted/mounted correctly or just not right for me.

They feel like they have a bi... Wed, 10 Aug 2016 18:02:36 EST Hello! Hi There. I just joined this team, even though it looks like it might not be that active? Hope I'm wrong about that, because I would love to talk derby with people.

I've been on Spark people for quite a while. I started derby with a recreational, learning team in September. On Sunday, I'm trying out for a banked track league. I'm super excited, but also kinda nervous. I'm certain I will pass, but I'm still worried I'm going to screw up.
41
Anyone else h... Thu, 14 Apr 2016 18:02:42 EST Merry Khaos Season Opener Challenge Is anyone here doing it? It starts on Monday, and she's only charging $15 for it. If I weren't flat broke, I'd be jumping all over it. I'm trying to save my pennies for her next challenge. Fri, 2 Jan 2015 02:28:56 EST hello! Hey all -

One of your NSOs here... I am learning to skate so I can also be an SO, but for the moment I'm the Head NSO for our league. We are in northern Maine and we're just over a year old, but we've played often against other Leagues and most of our play-eligible skaters travel to New Brunswick, CA to scrimmage with some of those Leagues often.

As I said, I'm learning to skate. I'm actually taking some time off from being HNSO and the Secretary for the League (Board-... Mon, 29 Dec 2014 12:19:09 EST Hi all Spark name: EvilynTent

Skater name: Evilyn Tent

Number: 666

Returning SP and derby skater. I joined derby in 2010 and was injured in my first season (severed my PCL during a bout). I've been active in derby since joining and on the BOD of my league for the past 3 years. Figured at my age (42) and injury history that I'd better get at it if I was ever going to skate again. Currently slogging my way through freshmeat, again. LOL

Nice to meet everyone,... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 10:23:25 EST Not a Derby Queen... *yet*. I have recently rediscovered my love of skating. The idea of derby is thrilling and exciting, and something that I think I could do. Maybe.

I have to learn to skate, though. I've always been an adequate skater, but never good. I have always had trouble on turns, for example. And um... well, derby ain't derby without turns. ;) So my goal is to focus on learning to skate. I'm probably going to buy a pair of skates with my tax returns. The rink nearby where I grew up recently reopene... Sun, 9 Feb 2014 20:58:20 EST LEAN AND MEAN IN 2014!! Is anybody out there??? I fell off the earth for a while, but now I'm back. I am so excited because I just ordered a slide board from Amazon. If anybody responds, I will let you know how it goes!
-Vera Left Wed, 29 Jan 2014 20:38:21 EST Test time freakout Hallo! Today was my very last bootcamp session before my test, which is Saturday. I feel pretty good about most everything - I can jump and hop, I can plow and T stop. My transitions are ok - I found out on Sunday I have been transitioning to the left wrong, (which would explain why I kept falling), and I've been practicing that specific move over and over. I think I'll do ok on guide feet and lateral cuts, and coasting and the 13 second lap. I can even do the little steps forward and sideway... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 01:04:41 EST Moooo Fresh meat here, yes so fresh I moo when poked.
(Rimshot)
Ok so after talking about it for almost a year I went to rec league last night for the first time. i fell spectacularly on my tushie. Thats gonna be sore for a while.

I did not grow up on roller skates, and stopped ice skating regularly by the time I was 10. Thu, 9 May 2013 01:17:36 EST Coming back from tib/fib fracture Hey all! I was wondering if anyone on the team has gone through the dreaded tib/fib fracture and made it back to the track? If so, how did you go about it (how long did it take, what exercises did you do beyond your PT, what skills did you focus on first and what did you leave until later)?

I broke my right leg on 10/15 during practice - 5 days before our 1st bout of the season! I was given the go ahead by my ortho surgeon to start skating (gently) again back in February, but then... Tue, 7 May 2013 11:15:11 EST Been AWOL, but things are looking up I've not been posting or skating properly for a while now, but hopefully I'll be getting a car tomorrow after passing my test in January. This means I can now get to practice with ease in 20-30 mins instead of spending 60-90 mins on public transport and I'll be back on track with skating! I know I've been a bit of a loser in terms of leading this team, and I apologise whole heartedly, but I promise to be back on board properly!!!! Tue, 9 Apr 2013 16:11:35 EST NE Derby Convention Anybody else going to the NE Derby Convention? Mon, 8 Apr 2013 17:34:20 EST Running of The Bulls NOLA I live right by New Orleans and this will be my 3rd year inthis crazy event. Anyone coming? IT is Early July and hot as hell but amazing, Wed, 27 Mar 2013 11:47:02 EST coming back after disappointment I am wondering if anyone has any advice for me. Back in October I tried out for my very competitive league. 65 tried out, and 25 (including me, yay!) were invited to train with the league for 6-weeks. At that point, there was a draft and 17 (not including me, boo!) were chosen. I got feedback from the team captains about why I didn't make it. Everything that had to do with my skating made sense. I have improved a lot, but there are rough edges that need smoothing and it would take them... Thu, 17 Jan 2013 05:30:26 EST Rollercon 2013 Is anyone planning on going? I'll be there. WOOT! LOL! Being 37 years old I am hella nervous but super excited!! I use to skate a a kid, I was pretty damn good. My brothers & cousins were at the rink so much the employees called us the "rink rats" and we were given jobs here and there. I was also on a speed team within the rink.....I really loved to skate! They tore down our rink when I was about 13 so that ended my love affair.

But now I'm back and... I have never been an athlete. To put it into perspective for you, i failed gym class in 12th grade because i hated participating..I had to return for an entire semester of 6 gym classes a day to graduate in time to start college. So needless to say I am growing overweight, i have zero balance and i have always turned to negative inner dialogue rather than staying positi... Thu, 29 Nov 2012 10:49:21 EST Hello, New Friends! I live in a small town, in which there are two derby teams. I've consistently yo-yoed weight my entire adult life and want to become as fit as I was when I was in high school.

I'm primarily a blocker right now, but I'd like to eventually do a little of everything so that I'm jamming like 30% of the time. Thu, 11 Oct 2012 16:42:20 EST Derby Nutrition? I can't decide if this is a dumb question or not... Is there any nutrition advice specifically for derby girls? Like do we need more calcium to keep our bones strong through all the hits and falls? Or is there something that will get rid of a bruise faster? Anybody heard of anything like that? Wed, 5 Sep 2012 00:40:10 EST Try Outs I have my skates, starting to get protective gear, and try outs are on October 14th. Eek! Sun, 19 Aug 2012 14:58:45 EST Skate Out Song If you could (or do) have your own personal skate out song (not a team one, YOURS, lets be spoilt and self centered!) what would it be/is it?

Mine would be the I Want it all/We will Rock you Mash up from Sucker Punch

There is something wonderfully hardcore/bad ass/ don't give a c*** about this song. Wed, 15 Aug 2012 16:28:21 EST Hi Finally! I've totally been a member of this group for at least a year (or close to it). I've never really been involved in the groups on spark, which is why things haven't really been sticking. So I'm changing that.

I'm Sarah! My skate name is Hermione Danger (unregistered). I'm working on getting in shape and getting to be an adequate skater at the moment. The team I joined is focusing on Derby 101 and recruiting right now and has a few people who are well experienced so I thought it could be a good fit. They are called Heavy ArmHer (we're on an ARMY base... assuming it was named by a tanker's wife like me lol). I do have my own gear but no experience. :)
So... since I'm brand new doe... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 07:55:36 EST Setting up for Bouts Do you all have a permenant track, or do you have to set up each time?

I ask, because everytime we have bouts etc, we have to lay down a tape and rope track in the futsal centre we practise in. This wouldnt' be so bad, if more people helped, but as it is, yesterday I got to practise and there were four people laying track and helping to set up for the bout. Needless to say, I didn't get to skate AT all, and it's the second time this month it's happened.

Anyway, off topi... Sun, 22 Jul 2012 08:23:17 EST Potential Fresh Meat Hello ladies! I'm hoping to join the roller derby in Spokane, WA. I SUCK at skating, but I'm hoping to start lessons once I get into better shape (I've recently joined a gym so I have no excuses). Are there any tips I should know? What I should and should not do? What I should focus on? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you! Tue, 10 Jul 2012 17:55:18 EST Get low drills? We had our last bout of this season Sunday. It was my 3rd bout ever. My hubby recorded it for the first time.

The first thing I noticed is that I looked pretty darn good out there if I do say so myself! 334 I don't think I'll be stressing over how I look to outsiders anymore. My ego got a bit of a boost!

The second thing I noticed is that I start each jam low with my butt out but stand up almost immediately! I skated the entire time almost completely u... Wed, 27 Jun 2012 12:08:32 EST What do you do with a weak skater? We're having a major problem right now and I'm looking for advice on what any of your leages may have done in this situation.

There's a girl on the league who came in as the weakest skater, but then she missed a ton of practices (five weeks!). She came back, but still only comes to practice randomly (we don't bout yet, so we have no punishment really for not making practice requirements). But now our league is scrimmaging, and she's nowhere near scrimmaging form. I overheard her as... Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:14:43 EST shoe derby So, we're having shoe derby practise tonight. I have no idea what to expect, but my burning question is: How should I track it-should I track it at all? Mon, 11 Jun 2012 13:48:42 EST MST Does your league "beef up" their MST? In addition to the wftda minimum skills test my league also requires 10 laps in a minute and a half and 5 laps backward in one minute. Wednesday evening I tested to become a rostered skater and the additions were the only thing that held me back. My 5 in a minute I did in 50 seconds and my 25 in 5 minutes I finished in 4:33, so it is not as if I am a turtle or anything. Just feeling defeated. So, did any of you have to do additional things to pass? Fri, 18 May 2012 17:02:03 EST Working Out and Trying Out Hi everybody, my name is Holly and I'm a 'Potential Fresh Meat' with the Burning River Roller Girls in Cleveland. In case you don't know, that means that I'm on board to try-out for the team and become a rookie or 'Fresh Meat'. Tryouts are July 1st (only 8 weeks away!) and I've been trying to get myself ready in every way.

I have a long way to go still skill-wise, but I believe that I can make their requirements by July. I've been trying to add strength training and cardio to my w... Mon, 7 May 2012 18:04:55 EST Outdoor Wheels If the weather EVER pulls itself together, I'm thinking of biting the bullet and attempting practise outside. I only have indoor wheels at the moment, so can anyone recommend some decent outdoor wheels? Sat, 5 May 2012 11:08:17 EST Pre Bout Rituals I've heard of athletes carrying rabbits feet, lucky coins, not washing jerseys, etc... Does anyone else out there have a good luck charm, or pre bout ritual?

I picked up the habit on "meditating" and visualizing the bout before hand. It may sound strange, but if I don't do it then I don't feel centered, or play right. :P Mon, 23 Apr 2012 15:11:56 EST wedging I have been trying to work on wedging/breaking through walls as a jammer and I'm *thisclose* to getting through but it is so friggin hard. I know there is only so much advice you can give in a forum like Spark, but does anyone have any suggestions that might help me have that a-ha moment? Are there good sources out there that I might not know about, like a youtube channel or something, that might help me see what I need to do? Wed, 11 Apr 2012 22:41:04 EST Derby Style-what's yours? I am not happy with how I played. So how to you force yourself to be aggressive when you don't feel it? Mon, 26 Mar 2012 01:29:55 EST making it happen Last night was a scrimmage practice. I was feeling okay, but I just wasn't on top of my game. I felt completely ineffective. Things I do well during practice drills -- footwork, hitting, timing -- just aren't coming together during the actual game. The obvious answer is to scrimmage more, but I thought I'd check here in case anyone has any words of advice that might help me get it together. Thoughts? Fri, 23 Mar 2012 00:03:13 EST Bout day nutrition What are your go-to pre-bout meals or nutrition? Especially for away games when travel and timing can add a kink in regularly spaced meals.

I don't yet have a go-to pre-bout meal. For home bouts, for the most part, I try to eat a balanced breakfast and usually hit up one of our sponsors (Tropical Smoothie Cafe) for a protein-packed smoothie (peanut butter paradise w/ whey protein & add acai berry).

What about you? Sun, 18 Mar 2012 21:03:08 EST Roller Derby name suggestion I just passed my level 2 test and get to register my name!!!! Hooray! Now to pick a name. I know this is my own creation but need some inspiration. I REALLY want "punky" as part of my name. It is the nickname my dad gave me and he died from cancer 13 years ago...but as soon as I have punky in the name all I can come up with is something to do with punky brewster...not exactly what I want. Any other suggestions??? Sat, 10 Mar 2012 17:28:02 EST Refs Drive Me Nuts! I know, when you play derby you're playing two games. One against the other team, and one against the refs. But man, I hate hate hate when Jam Refs don't focus on the jammer!

In my bout on Saturday I had the other teams jammer grab my wrist as she was falling, pull me down and the jam ref was looking elsewhere and didn't call it. Grrr! She so should've been in the box for that.

We only lost our game by 20 points, so if we had one or two more power jams we could've won. Mon, 5 Mar 2012 16:19:38 EST Plyometrics I'm trying to step up my workouts by incorporating more plyometrics into my daily routine. I can't seem to find any videos on SparkPeople, or articles, for demos. Does anyone have a good plyometric workout video they like to do or a suggestion of where to look?

I already include some in my routine, but I want to keep pushing myself and not hit a plateau. Thu, 1 Mar 2012 15:15:08 EST Beginner Drills? Our league is brand new -- we just had our 3rd practice last night. I used to skate for WCR, but it's been a few years since I retired.

I've been asked to lead both practices next week, and I'm trying to remember what drills we did in my old league when it was just starting out. I need to be careful not to pull anything too advanced yet -- some of the skaters are still not comfortable on their skates. I have a couple in mind, but any suggestions would be awesome. Tue, 28 Feb 2012 09:53:04 EST How many log on points today? 7+7 Thu, 23 Feb 2012 03:13:33 EST Recruiting/team building Hey guys!

I joined our local league last November. Since then I've learned that there used to be one league in town with one bout-ready team, then drama happened and some of the girls defected from the original league to start their own.

Now, neither league has a team with enough bout-ready people to actually play. Really smart, right? ;)

I am so excited about derby and want to work hard and pass my minimum skills requirements so I can bout, but I will never g... Hi, all...I have a question that I'm not sure there's a real answer to, but I'll ask it anyway.

I have the WFTDA test coming up in just under two weeks. I feel pretty confident about most of it (I skated with the AZ Derby Dames from 2007-2008 but then took a four-year hiatus and didn't start skating again until last month...I'm now in Michigan and am going to try out for the South Bend Rollergirls), but the 25 laps in five minutes has me concerned. I know it's a pretty vague ques... Mon, 16 Jan 2012 18:59:23 EST Hello from VT! Hi everyone!

Just wanted to introduce myself. I just started skating with the Central Vermont Roller Derby Twin City Riot, and I'm in love with derby. Can't wait to get in shape, and be out on the track more often. It's a little tough being 45 minutes away from practice (especially in the winter), but the feeling I get after makes it all worth it. Thu, 12 Jan 2012 21:51:26 EST wanna be Hello ladies, my name is Kathy, I used to be cutting edge, and B.A., but after 5 kids and some years I turned into a frumpy hause frau. I am currently a NSO for the Omaha Roller Girls (ORG) in Omaha, NE. I am only volunteering as an official until I can get a pair of skates and all the necessary equipment. I thought this would be a great place to get a bit of information about skates. I have been on many websites and found a pair of derby skates that I like, but really want some input from an experienced skater/ NSO/ coach to see if they're worth spending the extra money.

Other... Mon, 7 Nov 2011 11:37:32 EST rebounding from rejection I've skated in the recreational league in Austin, TX for the last year and a half, never having been much of an athlete before playing derby. I set a goal of trying out for the competitive league and for the last 6 months I worked with a trainer, set insane goals, and met *almost* every single one of them. Tryouts were on Oct 5th and I didn't make it.

The rejection hit me a lot harder than I had expected it to. I was proud of myself for working so hard leading up to the tryout... Thu, 20 Oct 2011 00:29:46 EST Newbie with BIG derby dreams hello i am ashley
i am attempting to train with with Cincinnati Rollergirls.
i keep getting hurt because i am out of shape.
doc thinks i have a torn meniscus but that isnt going to stop my derby dreams and involvement.
excited about sparkpeople and im excited this team is here! Wed, 5 Oct 2011 15:46:58 EST O.M.G. On the roster this weekend! A little background...I started skating a year ago, passed assessments in January, got sick and missed league try outs. As a result, I stayed on the ref team while the rest of the fresh meat continued their training. In July, I scrimmaged for the first time at Rollercon (scary!) and a month ago, did try outs and got on the team.

One month ago.

Now the fresh meat team is having their first bout on Saturday. Being one of the newest additions, it didn't even occur to me ... Wed, 28 Sep 2011 11:52:15 EST WFTDA Regional Tournaments Starting this Weekend! Is anyone going to be in Baltimore for the tournament this weekend? I will be there all weekend running around - DC Rollergirls are co-hosting!

What about other tournaments? Tue, 13 Sep 2011 09:44:43 EST 1 year newbie Hello all! I put on my first pair of skates in January 2011 and have been hooked since. Name is Shyster and I play for the Missile Mountain Skate Club in Colorado.

Looking forward to getting stronger and shedding 30 pounds! Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:16:41 EST sleep Derby takes a lot out of me at practice and I train at the gym at least twice a week too. I try to get 8 hours of sleep a night but always still feel run down. I'm curious if other athetic women find they need more sleep too. Maybe I'm just a wuss though too...that is also an option. 198 102 Wed, 24 Aug 2011 15:56:01 EST Roller Derby Workout DVD? Have any of you tried it? What do you think? I just ordered my copy today.... Pros? Cons? Anything??
-Scars Sat, 20 Aug 2011 23:25:55 EST Hey there! I'm starting this up again... I started playing derby in April and have GAINED weight!! LOL! I have finally become ok with my body and derby has helped me with that. But I would still like to lose weight. I'm not fitting in ANY of my pre-derby pants anymore! Anyway, just wanted to say hi to my fellow derby ladies! (and gents?) O! BTW- do we go by derby names on here? If so, my name is Scars Volta. Nice to "meet" everyone! Tue, 16 Aug 2011 04:20:53 EST Back after babies and an injury... Hey girls,
My name is Crybaby and i previously skated for the LA Derby Dolls. I was there for a few years, then i transitioned over to some professional lucha style wrestling, and then after a few years there, i tore my ACL during a show. I then got pregnant with my son, had knee surgery after that, and then...just had a second child, a little girl in march.
goal is to get myself back into shape (i've gained 20 pounds since my first child) and to get back on... Mon, 15 Aug 2011 17:38:23 EST Returning from injury Does anyone have any recommendations?

I broke my fibula and tore my ankle ligament in May and finally got clearance to start my physical therapy next week. Besides whatever they might have to say, is there any tips or pointers or stories that anyone wants to share?

I'm really antsy to get back in the game! Sun, 7 Aug 2011 01:43:19 EST Injuries Hey teammates! I was playing in a scrimmage this weekend and took a tumble. I'll see if I can post the pic to my sparkpage. The injured appendage is my left knee. I had x-rays, and am on anti-inflammatories, and will see the orthopedic on Monday. I am a newbie to RD (about 5 months) and I am so happy to see the changes in my body and my mind as I get more healthy.

I wondered if any veterans out there had advice on keeping up the activity while I am restricted from walking. I ... Tue, 2 Aug 2011 21:11:59 EST Hey all! Hey everyone!

I'm a rec leauger from Austin, TX. Wed, 27 Jul 2011 23:45:53 EST Newbie with ??? A roller derby team is starting up in my hometown and I plan to join (first meeting this Sat.). I am a little concerned about a few things though and would like to have some input from experienced derby women.

1. I'm 52 years young (good health, great cardio shape, very flexible and the strongest I have ever been) and concerned about what a hard impact with the floor will do to my body. Anybody skate with older ladies that can tell me how they fare? I know there are padded shor... Wed, 27 Jul 2011 19:15:21 EST Building Muscle vs. Burning Calories? Hi Everybody,

Since breaking my tib/fib in December, I have been back to skating for about 2.5 months. I've rebuilt a lot of muscle in my thighs and elsewhere and I feel great.

When you started skating more often, did your weight stay stagnant? I have been burning ridiculous amounts of calories and staying within my calorie range every day, but I have only lost about 1 lb./month (frustrating!). I know that I have been building back my muscles, so I'm trying to be patient... Mon, 25 Jul 2011 12:54:24 EST I have no clue what to eat! I posted this on the main SP forum but I'm reposting here, since you girls play roller derby too and I'd love to know what your diets look like:

"OK, so I'm only 24 but I feel like I've tried every diet under the sun, and my weight constantly yo-yo's. I'm about 30 lbs over what I want to weigh and I'm so sick of it, but I can't decide what diet to follow. I know it's supposed to be a lifestyle change but I can't ever find anything that's easy to stick to and affordable!

... Mon, 11 Jul 2011 12:24:15 EST Hi! Newbie here Hi!
I am new to spark people. I just quit Weight watchers because I cant afford it and in my hood its full of grannies. Now I LOVE grannies but Id like a variety of people. This seems like a good place for me. I live in MN and was on the MNRG Recreation team the Debutants. I am not trying out for the NSRG in a month. I am excited to meeting other skaters that are looking to get healthy.
Ann
Antsy Pants
Meyers Tue, 31 May 2011 00:20:48 EST Hello! Hello all,
I am Mae B. Hi all,

I'm a newb to derby, started out my first practice in January with no prior skating skills at all. I'm finishing up my MA degree and ended up having to miss almost 3 months of practices, will be returning to practice in mid-May after the semester ends. I'm so nervous that the girls on my league will judge me for my absence.. Is it better to wait until next season? I want to take responsibility for missing the practices, and have been learning to skate on my own.. I really ... Tue, 26 Apr 2011 14:21:18 EST May 2011 Challenge Our challenge this month is going to be a endurance favorite: 5 min lap challenge. How many laps can you do in 5 minutes? The goal is at least 25 in 5 min according to the WFTDA minimum skill requirements.
Have someone time you at the beginning of the month (or time yourself, if you're talented like that) and then again at the end of the month. In the mean time, we'll all work on building endurance by #1 skating form, and #2 cross training.
If you can already do the 25 in 5, push y... Tue, 26 Apr 2011 10:55:10 EST I am back for good this time! Hey Ladies,
I am Red Death Roxi, the last time I introduced myself I was a fresh meat skater trying to find a name and get in shape! I am no longer FM I am a rookie now! I am back to spark people and wanted to reintroduce myself! I have been a on and off kinda girl for quite sometime! I am currently nursing an injury that has kept me off skates for a month now, and have gained 5 lbs since..lame!! I hope to soon be back and rolling with my team! Mon, 25 Apr 2011 13:40:27 EST Is it Tuesday yet? Ahhhhh!! My younger three had Spring Break last week and my husband had to go out of town to visit his ailing Grandmother (who is 101 years old, btw!) this weekend. So of course, this is the Sunday that we don't have practice because of the holiday! I really needed practice yesterday. LOL

I'm hanging on by a thread, counting the hours till Tuesday practice. Oh, and I have to go get my teeth cleaned this morning. Ugh. Mon, 25 Apr 2011 07:25:44 EST First bout you ever saw? When did you see your first bout? What league did you watch? Was it before or after you joined derby?

I'm always surprised by girls who join a league having never actually seen live roller derby, though I admit I did the same thing. When I joined, there were no leagues playing publicly in Ohio. The league I joined (Gem City Rollergirls) had only been practicing a month or two and hadn't even started contact drills. I went to watch a practice because one of my best friends mentioned... Thu, 21 Apr 2011 10:53:58 EST Derby blog I have quite a few derby blogs in my bookmarks, but somehow I didn't know that Bonnie D. Stroir had one! I know, right? Have I been living in a cave? LOL

I adore her! She kicks so much ass and helps the derby world at the same time. Her Youtube instructional videos are such an awesome resource.

PS- I just went to the derby websites post and saw that this was on there. But, I'm going to make this post anyway. ;) Wed, 20 Apr 2011 20:59:51 EST Hi from MI Hi, i'm Marissa, aka doom shakalaka. Ever since i saw my first roller derby match 5 months ago i was hooked. Im pretty new to derby and skating in general but i learn fast, really surprising the progress ive made in those months. I have been skating with a smaller league in Mt Clemens Michigan the most fun I have ever had. Soon I'll be trying out for the Detroit Derby Girls. From what i heard at derby U and some of their other players i'm practically assured to get in. Anyway i saw this g... Tue, 19 Apr 2011 01:28:16 EST Did you bout this weekend? Did you bout this weekend?
Who did you play? What was the score?
Let's hear about it! Mon, 18 Apr 2011 14:38:41 EST changing wheels? I just bought some new wheels to practice outdoors this summer, but I can't seem to get my bearings out of my old wheels to switch them. How does everyone else switch out wheels? Sun, 17 Apr 2011 14:56:45 EST Tracking practice question So, I'm still pretty new to SP and I have to admit that I have limited patience for the fitness tracker. I like things to be simple, so when I track practice I've just been using "rollerblading/whatever" and tracking time. I adjust the time based on how much actual skating I feel that we did (eliminating the strategy talking sessions, recess, stretches, etc).

How do the rest of you track your practices? Like say last night, we did 25 minutes of plank sprints and prior to that, abo... Wed, 13 Apr 2011 07:50:59 EST New to the Roller Derby Queens team Hi, my name is Maime and I skate with the Cincinnati Rollergirls. I just found this team today and had to join immediately! I'm relatively new to SP and it's nice to find a forum where people will understand what I'm talking about in regards to practice, derby, etc. :)

My husband started using a different app to track his intake and he lost 15 lbs in just a few weeks (stupid boys! LOL). He inspired me to start being more vigilant about my eating habits. I love to eat and I can real... Fri, 1 Apr 2011 09:21:28 EST Derby Injuries Once of the first things most women are told when they join a roller derby league is ,"It's not if you'll get hurt, it's when and how badly.". Injuries obtained during practice or games are seen as badges of honor by most derby girls. So.... what's the worst (best) injury you've had? Did you show it off? Any pictures? Thu, 31 Mar 2011 11:52:48 EST Hey! We have 353 members and a new teamleader Please welcome Bethany as our new team leader, she's been a derbygirl for a year (and sadly even though I have been playing since 2006, between being President of LOCO Roller Derby (3 cities and 4 teams strong in 1year) and a new mommy, and trying to retrain after a c-section, I have been off Sparkpeople. I came to a revelation when I watched ice hockey and thought, "If I was obsessed with hockey like I am with roller derby, I would have to learn how to ice skate. And well!" So I'm not putting the same pressure on myself to learn as fast as possible. Instead, I'm training to be the best skater I can be, armed with the WFTDA skills list and rules!

Gretchen in Tampa, FL Mon, 14 Mar 2011 23:15:11 EST Fresh Meat in Holland Hey all. I live in Rotterdam, Netherlands and can't seem to take my skates off since I got them in the mail a few days ago. Wed, 9 Mar 2011 05:48:39 EST Who's yer derby hero??? I think it's wonderful that we have more girls than we can put on a roster, makes you work that much harder to ensure your spot.

I happy danced my way into work today, what made you do your last happy dance? :) Fri, 4 Mar 2011 11:47:20 EST New skates on the way!!! I just have to share this somewhere because it's so exciting :)

I ordered my new skates and they'll be coming just in time to cheer me up from my roller derby grief (I'll explain in a minute). I'm getting white Riedell 265's, Invader DA-45 plates, Bones Red bearings, and Slim G-Rod Wheels. I have been in love with it since I was young and now that I am about to be 28 and going through a divorce, I have realized that I have held myself back all these years because of fear. I was afraid that I couldn't do the things that I admired or aspired to be. My soon-to-be-ex wasn't the type to encourage me. He found it easier to help tear me down. Sun, 24 Oct 2010 19:23:37 EST Any suggestions on pack pacing/getting faster?? Hi guys. I'm really new at this. Our third fresh Meat practice was today and we did some pack pacing, which was sorta ok until it got faster. I really psyched myself out thinking that I would fall/accidentally trip people and found myself falling back. So frustrating! I dunno if maybe there's something you tell yourselves to help focus/ not worry about that. Also, I know I haven't skated in a looong time, but I think I'm one of the slowest girls and would like any advice on going faster/... Sun, 24 Oct 2010 19:16:14 EST Fresh Meat super-new at derby! Hey Guys! I just had my first practice today. I fell, got back up, and lived through it, but I have a LOONG way to go. I haven't skated in about 20 years (I'm 32)and I hit up my local rink a couple of times before our recruitment event. Although I know I'm new, I found out today that I can't keep the pace (thought I wasn't so slow) so I'm a little disheartened, but I'm going to try to go to every practice to get better. Sun, 17 Oct 2010 19:26:12 EST hey I may try out for my local team they just put one together and told me any skill level including beginner welcome. my problem is my mom thinks its too dangerous and that having 2 small kids I can't risk getting hurt. my husband isn't sure what he it really that dangerous besides bumps, brusies and cuts??? I have been interested for a looong time and I really want to try out Thu, 7 Oct 2010 16:49:54 EST Wannabe who hasn't been on skates in a while I went to see a match yesterday and loved it. My name is Sara, i'm 25 and I'm a brand new fresh meat skater in Central NJ. I'm still working on the super basics (not constantly falling, always having derby stance, freaking CROSSOVERS). I've always been decently athletic, but I've always been a big girl, too. I don't want to be tiny. I want to be a big hitter, and a strong athlete. Annnd I want to stop falling on my tailbone(twice in the two weeks I've been skating OWWWW).

I also had a panic attack at my la... Tue, 21 Sep 2010 15:04:03 EST Sorta new Hey there,

I'm not really new just haven't really posted on here. I'm trying to learn crossovers and I'm having a super tough time doing them. Any suggestions from anyone? Oh yeah I'm from Jersey and have only been skating for a few months. Tue, 24 Aug 2010 13:49:46 EST Helllooooo from Upstate NY I'm so stoked to see 4 derby related groups on here! I live near Saratoga Springs, NY and skate with The Albany All Stars. In a few weeks I'll be off my 90 day probation and no longer a freshie.

I'm looking to get into shape to skate better. I don't want to be the weak link on my team. Can't wait to chat with all of you gals and hope to get some mutual motivation. Tue, 10 Aug 2010 00:59:19 EST Always loved Roller Derby Hi, my name is Grace and I've never actually been on a team. I used to love to watch when I was a kid in Miami, but hadn't even heard of any local teams in a long time. I've been trying to find info. I haven't skated in a while, but used to be really good. Thought maybe I could learn more about it and maybe find a local team, hope that's ok. Sun, 8 Aug 2010 22:09:08 EST Hey There Hi all,
My name is Amy & I'm pretty new to Spark & Derby. Recruitment started last Tuesday, and I've been skating only 3 times. Getting better though! Can't wait to try out for my team, Springfield Rollergirls. Happy to meet you all. :) Sun, 1 Aug 2010 20:24:23 EST Very bruised tailbone Friday i fell while skating backwards and hit my tailbone hard. Went to practice yesterday (Monday) and after the drills, I can hardly sit/move today. Anyone have any experience with this type of injury? Anything I should do or not do? Thanks, Ann Tue, 20 Jul 2010 08:34:14 EST New Meat Hey All -

I have been on and off spark for a bit, but haven't really been excited by much - saw y'all and thought I would say hi.

My goals are 95% derby related - endurance, strength and speed. and 5% health, weight loss - all that jazz.

So this seemed like a good fit.
Can post more about me if people are interested..

Cheers - Wham! 213 Mon, 19 Jul 2010 17:34:35 EST Does anyone use insoles? I'm into my second week of fresh meat training and I'm having a problem with my left foot hurting. I thought it was just cramping yesterday but today the bottom of my foot actually hurts. I was wondering if maybe an insert would help. Does anyone have suggestions of anything I could do differently or an insole suggestion? Thanks! Wed, 14 Jul 2010 20:56:51 EST Hey Hey! Just joined (after debating Weight Watchers and deciding I'd rather have a shiny new pair of outdoor wheels and a camera instead). Nice to meet you all! Tue, 13 Jul 2010 17:21:26 EST What to eat before a bout or before practice???? I have been trying to adjust my calorie intake in accordance to my practice schedule and on bout day I was not sure what I needed to eat considering we were skating outside in 90+ degree weather. I don't want to gain any weight and seemed to gain a pound after my first scrimmage?

Any healthy foods I should be considering? Mon, 28 Jun 2010 13:22:30 EST Riedell Boots? Ok, so I finally can purchase my first pair of skates and really get into derby instead of just talking! So I've been looking around for a skate that's not too crazy expensive but still a good one. What do yall think of the Riedell Boots? I've read mixed reviews but would be great to get your feedback. Thanks in advance Derby Queens! Hey Ladies!

I am completely new to roller derby but wanted to try something new and challenging for me and only me. I've been looking around to buy some skates but could use some input. I've been to 4/5 pactices for the HRD Rec League Machette Betties. I fell in love with Dreby last year, a friend had introduced me to it. This year I decided I'd like to play. Tue, 8 Jun 2010 15:54:02 EST July Challange So competition really motivates me and I was wondering if anyone would like to do a team challenge with me for July. I'm going to a newbie meeting this Tuesday here in Phoenix. I'm so excited! I haven't roller skated in a looong time. Hello! I'm Leslie (that's my regular name) I went to a local Roller Derby practice yesterday as a volunteer and was asked why I didn't want to play instead. Sat, 19 Sep 2009 23:10:39 EST Calories burned at practice I found this really interesting, so I thought I'd share. I wore my Polar Heart Rate Monitor to practice today. I'm curious how those of you who are tracking fitness here record your practice time. I attend 3 2-hour practices a week, but I never log 120 minutes of rollerskate/blade time...I don't even log typically 60 minutes when we account for track laying and pulling up and the inevitable chitchat. I figure that my heart rate really isn't up that high during a lot of drills, so it seems somehow dishonest to log those minutes. Am I overthinking this? I've been training with the local team for 3 weeks now and although it kicks my ass, I've never thought of quitting.

Well, that isn't totally true. The fact that I'm the biggest girl out there, the fact that I have trouble getting up from one knee falls... are a bit discouraging and on a few really bad nights where my... Just wanted to say hi! Wed, 27 Aug 2008 20:59:06 EST music video Ok, most of you know I took up Roller Derby as part of my weight loss/ exercise plan. Well we made a "rock" video for a local band (Atomic Johnny). I'm in some shots through out. But at 3:17 it's me!! If you watch the video I'll warn you now, it is a local band!!! The guys are sweet just not my type of music. We had to listen to the song for about 6 hours straight! :) So here's the link if you're curious! Sun, 9 Mar 2008 23:50:33 EST question I saw the thread about the January 2008 challenge.

Why haven't there been anymore challenges since then? Can we get this going again? I think it's a great idea!!! On top of that, we all want to be the best we can be right? Let's do it! I don't mind helping out with the challenges, just let me know!

Frankie Sun, 2 Mar 2008 16:49:33 EST fresh meat Hey everyone! I'm a newbie to sparkpeople! My name's Frankie Facebreaker of the Oklahoma Victory Dolls! Been skating for abouot a year and a half now, but I'm new to OKVD (I used to be captain of Cell Block 9, Tornado Alley Rollergirls). I'm loving derby and want to be the best skater I can be! So if anyone wants to exchange workout drills or anything, let me know! Fri, 29 Feb 2008 12:25:27 EST Hiya I'm Valerie, aka Laverne N. Surly, and I've been skating with the Dutchland Derby Rollers in Lancaster, PA since our inception a little over 2 years ago. This is my second try with SP, I successfully lost 27 lbs last year and than started slacking and gained it all back. Hopefully this time round I'll stick it out.

I'm back on the wagon since the beginning of this month and I have the added motivation to regain my overall health in that our travel team tryouts are Feb. 13th. I m... Fri, 25 Jan 2008 11:00:27 EST what do you eat before practice? I'm a newbie rollergirl, just made the Houston league back in August. I'm still struggling A LOT with endurance during practices. I've started working out more outside of practice, and am also in the process of adopting a vegetarian diet. I've got high cholesterol, so it was either meds or veggies...I went with veggies.

Anyway, I'm on day four of the new veggie diet, and I feel fabulous! Seriously, I wanna dance all day long. And I'm not at all hungry...which is actually th... The challenge: do a wall sit every day. Do it while you're waiting for the microwave, while you're talking on the phone, when you're watching TV, or right before bed. Or be a dork like me and do it in the bathroom stall at work.

Beginner: hold for 1 minute
Average: hold for 2 minutes
Kick ass: hold for 3 minutes

ALSO PART OF THE CHALLENGE: check in h... Fri, 4 Jan 2008 09:10:48 EST Challenge: December 2007! Report in! Ok, we are in winter and have snow (at least where I am) so skating outdoors is out. So practices and home are all I have. Here's my challenge and if anyone wants to join me - come on!

Since it's the Holidays it's tempting to eat Christmas cakes and cookies and sweets, and easy to not have time to go to practice and work out. So, for the rest of the month I propose to:

Not Miss any team or league practices for the rest of December, other than those cancelled on Christma... Mon, 10 Dec 2007 16:51:11 EST New to this group Came across this group while randomly browsing and glad I did. I play for Ohio Rollergirls (just like StingRay - we're actually on the same home team). Been on Spark for about a month now and have lost 15 pounds so far. Going into my third season and I want to get in my best shape yet. Sat, 8 Dec 2007 19:12:04 EST One year in derby; new to SP Hi! I'm StingRay from the Ohio Roller Girls. I just finished my first year playing derby. I had an injury that took me out of the first 2 bouts of the season, so my "off" season is time for me to really start kicking ass! SP was introduced to me by Dixie Heartless (she hosts another roller derby themed team on here, if you're interested), and I'm glad I finally listened. I'm not looking to lose weight- just gain muscle and become a super vicious derby queen. Tue, 4 Dec 2007 12:11:15 EST Let's work our group! I've seen some comments about our group not being that active, or not posting that much anymore, and that's sad. We have more in common than most of the other groups out there, we have the same workout plan, love the same sport, get all the same injuries, and are all really busy on top of it.

I may not be a points leader - I don't really track my food, but I do come by and login, and I do pay attention and track my weight. (I'm just not losing much right now) I am losing more size... Mon, 26 Nov 2007 17:02:16 EST New Member Hi Everyone!

I'm a ref for CRG. I actually tried out and made the league, but decided to wait until I finished school and had more time for practice to actually bout. I think making it to practice regularly and really knowing what you are doing out there is key to player safety... for yourself and others. So, I hope in a year to be on a team.

For now, I'm reffing and trying to get into/stay in shape!

Nice to meet you all! Fri, 23 Nov 2007 13:41:28 EST Championship bout today! Send good thoughts towards Atlanta today. My team, the Toxic Shocks take on the reigning champions from seasons 1 & 2 the Sake Tuyas.

It's bitter sweet because it's my last game. I'm retiring after today to ref next season.

Think I'll hit the top of my calorie range today! Sun, 5 Aug 2007 12:23:55 EST More adding to my stress level The league that my league split off from has offered 2 of our girls positions. They have hacked our myspace, and our yahoo group. They schedule all of their fundraisers on the same day that we have scheduled, and are now trying actively to steal our rink out from under us. I just bought a new house, started a new job, my 2 yearold tried to smother my 8 month old, and my grandparents are sueing me for custody of said 2 year old. Ya wanna know why I stay fat???? I don't have time to eat ri... Mon, 16 Jul 2007 21:07:04 EST RollerCon Is anyone going? Sat, 14 Jul 2007 11:23:13 EST July Challenge From July 1 to July 30 my challenge is to do strength training for core strength 3 times per week, skate twice and bike at least once. Through in a swim if I have time.

I am also giving myself over to Spark People's nutrition based diet plan and will going with the meals they suggest to see if I can get off the junk food and bad choices I am making.

The challenge is to lose 0.7% of my body weight (6 pounds) up to 14.7 pounds (7% of my body weight) with the Punk Rockers... Fri, 29 Jun 2007 09:07:30 EST Season is over and Training is on Ok, so I won't be helping too much with points, as tracking everything i eat and all that is just too time consuming for me, I will help out the team I have created here because I will start tracking my exercise, both in minutes and in blogs or jounral which will get me points, as well as help me track my workout plans a bit for the next two months while I am into training only. I want to improve my speed and endurance, and at the end, my hitting, maneuverability and jumping because I think I... Mon, 18 Jun 2007 12:41:03 EST Tryouts are next month! Any tips on what the will be looking for. I've been practicing in the neighborhood but I'm not great (yet). 216 Sat, 16 Jun 2007 20:58:14 EST I'm new Hey there, I'm new to this site and to roller derby, I see it's been awhile since the last post, anyone still here? Lexy Wed, 6 Jun 2007 23:13:05 EST I'm back sorta Hey everyone, and all those that have joined over the last couple of months. I got busy, (not off training, but just too busy for Spark People stuff) with work, Roller Derby with MTL Roller Derby - I play for Les Contrabanditas. I started this team hoping it would keep me going and it helped, and I've gotten down to a size 16, I threw away my scale, and I'm happy to be getting fit. I can do a pyramid up to 5 laps easy now, and I've done it to 10 and not collapsed, so I know I'm getting into b... Wed, 25 Apr 2007 12:24:35 EST Just call me newb... Wow! This is great! Well, I'm a member of The Panama City Roller Derby. Right now I'm out, awaiting pin removal (4 to be exact) from two fingers!

Anyway, I'm here at spark for the third time. Maybe this time it'll stick! Wed, 21 Mar 2007 17:52:28 EST Hi, I'm new... Hey ladies-

I just joined today and was so happy to find a group of roller girls!

Unfortunately, I tore my ACL in November and had surgery about a month ago.

I'm all about getting back in shape and on skates again. And losing a bunch of weight along the way.

xo
Kate Tue, 13 Mar 2007 01:21:52 EST First derby experience! I'm a rookie no more!

Our first intraleague bout was this past Saturday. We had the biggest crowd ever at over 3900 people. Wow!

We Dagger Dolls bouted the Rockits, last year's champs. It was one of the lowest scoring matches ever at 47-33. We lost, but dang our defense looked good.

Skating in front of a huge crowd was amazing. They just sort of disappeared when the bouting started and I was able to focus completely on the game at hand. I got knocked do... Wed, 31 Jan 2007 11:50:28 EST Derby Health & Wellness I found this somewhere and it seemed pertinent to this community.

* After a tough practice, keep your body moving the following day. You want to work your lactic acid out. Do a light round of cardio combined with
stretching excercises the day after our practices. This could be speed-walking, a light jog, swimming or a long bicycle ride. You want to do this activity long enough to work your heart rate up for at least 15-20 minutes.

*Lactic acid is toxic waste from... For exercise, that is!

Do you rely solely on practices for fitness? What are your practices like? Do you train outside of practice and if so, what do you do?

Thu, 18 Jan 2007 15:44:31 EST This weekend... I finally went to see my first bout - live & in person! Naptown vs. Nashville - it was the first bout for both leagues and it was an impressive showing by both, with Naptown coming out ahead 160-114. I think this is probably the first sporting event that had me actively cheering on from the stands! Yay! I think it also calmed my nerves quite a bit about what it will be like when we have our first bout!
What was your first bout like? How long had you been training beforehand? What advice...
