Hi everyone,

I thought it would be good to share any functional "natural exercise" that we do. Thu, 15 Aug 2013 01:45:41 EST I'm such a tenderfoot The first time I tried barefoot running last fall, I ran about a mile at a local bike path and got a really bad blister that tore open. I couldn't run even in shoes for almost a week. Then it got cold so I didn't try the barefoot thing for the rest of the winter.

I did buy some Altera Instinct minimalist running shoes and I really like them. I've been working on my form. I think the reason I tore that blister up was because I was pushing off the ball of my foot instead of lifti... Thu, 4 Jul 2013 22:19:23 EST Ow! Starting Barefoot running again First off, is anybody out there? I don't see a lot of activity here…just checking.

If anybody is here, I have a question. I just joined this group and I just started barefoot running again (Hattori shoe). I did this last year and then had an accident (just broke a toe) and quit for awhile. I tried to start jogging again and noticed I was having a hard time with landing (with regular running shoes). I have bad knees and I remembered that the barefoot running really helped with ... Sun, 16 Jun 2013 12:32:55 EST Barefoot Winter runs? What temperature is too cold to make a barefoot winter run? I am just curious I am not planning on running in the snow:) Mon, 4 Mar 2013 17:37:17 EST 5K in June I just signed up for a 5K in June. I'm planning to run it completely barefoot (no minimalist shoes). It will be my first barefoot race. I have plenty of time to train and condition my feet. Tue, 19 Feb 2013 14:25:25 EST How is everyone doing? I had surgery over the summer and couldn't run for ~8 weeks, then did a couch to 5K program (wearing Nike Free's - not really minimalist shoes) over the fall (Sept - Nov). I kept up with 2-3 runs per week and until mid Dec. but didn't do more than a 5K.

Today I went running with my old running partners (who totally ditched me after I had surgery) on a 4.5 mile run. I was a little worried, but it was great! I ran the whole time, it was 17 degrees and pretty windy, and it was fabulou... Sun, 13 Jan 2013 23:56:08 EST Slow Runner I started running a few months ago and had a horrible time with my knees. But, I didn't have any problem with my knees when I was barefoot around the house. So I bought some Vibram Five Fingers and went on a run. I am not planning on going on a barefoot run until the spring time. But, I think I will have an easy transition over to barefoot when it warms up.

I am looking forward to learning as much as I can from you guys.

Thanks,

Leroy Tue, 11 Dec 2012 17:11:57 EST Barefoot to avoid shin splints... I just completed my first barefoot run, .6 miles, pushing my toddler in the jogging stroller, and I feel great! I've always struggled with shin splints, in high school it was only during track, it's whenever I try to run unless I soak my lower body in a tub of ice water immediately after each run. I read Born to Run a year and a half ago and was intrigued. Then I just read two more books about barefoot running (one was ChiRunning) and they convinced me to just go for it. My p... Fri, 19 Oct 2012 18:40:09 EST New to the team with a question! Hi! I'm Katie. I have only recently discovered barefoot(or close to it) running and I am in love. I bought a pair of Invisible Shoes and I've tried a pair of VFFs(which I will be getting soon) and I feel like a gazelle prancing through the plains when I run now. I used to feel more like an elephant stomping down the trail before I tried barefoot running. I've always had a problem with regular sneakers. My feet always cramped and usually I would kick off my shoes during a workout for relief. I... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 14:27:05 EST Winter Boots? I live in Upstate NY and get a lot of snow/rain/ice in the winter. I have been looking for boots that fit minimalist criteria and haven't really found much, especially at a reasonable price. Anyone have suggestions? Sun, 30 Sep 2012 23:10:55 EST Hello! Just started down the path of barefooting a few weeks ago and I love it. No initial leg fatigue, feels totally natural, no soreness or other issues so far. I have run a mile barefoot in grass and a half mile on asphalt so far. Taking it slow, as I've been told you should. I'm looking into buying a pair of Merrell barefoot shoes but haven't decided which ones yet. VFF's don't work for me and my funny shaped end toes. Thu, 6 Sep 2012 20:51:56 EST Great Deal!

h-sandals-womens-2011-special-buy
I believe I will be ordering these immediately! Mon, 27 Aug 2012 19:00:26 EST I ran in huaraches today! I went on my first barefoot run today in huaraches (so not technically barefoot, but pretty close, right). It was awesome. I did about a mile. All the barefoot running websites say to transition by running half your usual distance at first. Except I'm so hit-and-miss with running. I really only run when I'm preparing for a 5K.

Anyway, the run was great. Hoping to make it a habit now. Sat, 11 Aug 2012 01:04:29 EST Hello fellow barefooters! Hi! My name is Dawn and I'm from the Chicago area (south suburbs).

My journey into barefoot workouts started because I have extra-wide, flat feet and was having problems with plantar fasciitis. I started barefoot because I have such a hard time finding workout shoes that fit me right, so for working out I said "screw it" and started barefoot. Lo and behold, my feet didn't hurt like they normally did. And since I'm over 200lbs, that's pretty impressive. I thought, "I must be on... Sun, 22 Jul 2012 14:29:00 EST First run today!! It was literally only around the block, but I'm taking everyone's advice and starting out super-slow...

And BOY did it feel great!

I'm beyond happy! Excited to be back out on the road. I seriously thought I'd never be able to run again. :) Thu, 19 Jul 2012 20:39:36 EST Apprehensive Hey all! I was referred here by HOUNDLOVER1 after I commented on her trail running blog. I have patella tendonitis in my right knee and so I haven't been running in AGES. So what brings me to this group, you ask? Well I injured my wrist a couple months ago and have been unable to do my regular training (BodyRock). I've put on a few pounds and just am CRAVING some cardio! I just bought a pair of NB minimalist shoes and am hoping they help me if I go running. I plan on hitting up the lak... Wed, 18 Jul 2012 23:03:33 EST New, and psyched! Hi everyone!

I think that I'm among my own here... I've been lurking around and have seen a lot of stories about people who ran more "traditionally" and experienced pain/injury, and so turned to barefoot/minimalist technique as a possible solution. This is my story EXACTLY! A few years back, I decided to do C25k, and I was doing really great with it until the stress fractures set in. Rehabilitation and change of shoes did not help... so I just gave up on it and figured that mayb... Tue, 17 Jul 2012 10:00:00 EST Are you kidding me?!!! Since I've decided to wear (almost) nothing on my feet while running, I figured I'd fallow all the advice ive read and start out slow. So, I figured what better way than to go through the C25K again. I did my first work out this evening, which was also my first time to run without shoes. I went to the track and wore neon blue socks!! :-) I'm LOVING this "no shoe" business !!!! My feet aren't swollen or throbbing or aching and my calves aren't screaming at me, which was the typical outcome bef... Thu, 5 Jul 2012 22:04:01 EST Hi! New member... Hey! Marty here, from Texas! A few yrs ago I was an avid runner, distance. I've been down for awhile, but have running in my blood!! I have decided that it's time to get back at it! I don't like the lazy person I've become. I was thinking this time around I would try barefoot running, or at least minimalistic (if that's the correct term) running. When I was running before I can remember how uncomfortable and swollen my feet felt during and after a run!! I hated it, and yea I was wearing good ... Sun, 1 Jul 2012 11:28:15 EST Yoga (etc) and Barefoot Running It occurred to me in the shower this morning (amazing how epiphanies happen in the bathroom!) that my other "sport" (not really a sport because there is no competition), yoga, is incredibly similar to barefoot running in their philosophies. I've been doing yoga for much longer than running, so it makes sense that I was drawn to this philosophy of running.

In both, yoga and barefoot running, the practice is done without the support of shoes. In both, the reasoning is to have ... Mon, 11 Jun 2012 05:49:36 EST Better Everyday! I have noticed that my feet/ankles/legs have not been as tired as usual doing the same things and I have almost no foot pain! My feet used to hurt every day! Once in a while if I do a lot they will be tired, but no pain like I used to get from the pressure of my shoes! I am getting used to the impact of just walking around, and my heels don't feel it so much anymore as they did at first.

I did my first race in Vibrams on pavement, and even though it was a little rough with the... Sun, 3 Jun 2012 22:53:16 EST Work shoes? What do folks here wear to work?? I am wearing flat as possible cheap shoes right now, but the drawback is not so flexible and not so much toe room. I have the advantage of being a casual workplace, but still I have to have some degree of normalcy in them. I don't think I could get away with water shoes... Thu, 10 May 2012 20:10:12 EST Only a week and I am a convert!! I have had foot/ankle/back/hip problems for a long time now and no special shoe or orthotic has helped. In fact it has made me weaker to the point I cannot hold the balance poses in yoga because my foot and ankle start shaking. I really have been looking at FiveFIngers a while but was scared to try them until a friend did and loved them. I bought a pair and ran 3 miles in them the first day! (I KNOW! Dumb!) But it told me what I needed to know...THIS is what I need!! Been wearing flats ... Sun, 6 May 2012 20:25:42 EST Vibram Girl Hey Y'all!

My name is Lydia. I'm a minimalist runner who has a wee addiction to VFFs. I've been in them Since October of 2009 (well, not the same pair, obviously!). Though many of you have probably already seen this article, I found it extremely helpful and wanted to share it with all of you. Chris McDougall offers a synopsis of "Born to Run" here and - more importantly - shares a very useful training video for those of us trying to run minimally and correctly. I've personally found the 100-up exercise extremely helpful; doing this just before setting out on a run keeps me upright and landing on ... Wed, 14 Dec 2011 02:38:00 EST Cheap high quality minimalist shoes... I was in Dallas the other day and on a whim stopped into an REI to check out the Merrell line of barefoot shoes as its getting pretty cold here in northern Texas. While there I noticed they have a section for returns that don't have anything wrong with them. For $19 I got my wife a pair of Merrell True Gloves that a lady had returned for being too small. For $6 I got my 2 year old a pair of Keen sandals that had been the wrong color. They also had a bunch of VFFs but nothing in sizes we could... Fri, 9 Dec 2011 16:15:19 EST C25K + Bikilas = awesome! ok, so this is my 3rd time around on C25K - first attempt ended w/ minor injury and lack of willpower (regular shoes) - 2nd attempt was in vibrams but ended for reasons I don't remember. So, I did something funky to my left foot a few weeks ago in a ballet conditioning class (after about 45 minutes on tip toe), and went to see a doctor after resting for 5 days did little to help with pain and [lack of] range of motion. Now, if you've been running for a while and have had to deal with any sort of overuse issues, you've probably noticed that most general practitioners are not really that on-the-ball when it comes to sports medicine.

Without knowing anything about my... Fri, 23 Sep 2011 17:01:04 EST The explosion of minimalist shoes Hi Guys,

You may have noticed that there has been this sudden explosion of minimalist shoes (a good thing, I think) - but I've had bad results trying anything but VFFs so far. I thought it might be nice to share the minimalist shoes we've tried and let everyone know what we liked and didn't.

I just received some GoLite "Spring Lite Ashely"s and was VERY disappointed in a very pronounced arch support:( I was looking to use a Groupon for ShoeBacca which didn't have a good... Mon, 22 Aug 2011 16:36:53 EST New here! Has anyone heard of Earthing? I thought I had more time to talk about this but I will be back on later to ask more questions, or answer some. Thanks for getting back with me. Wed, 17 Aug 2011 17:50:27 EST Plyometrics/ Jumping I began barefoot rope skipping not even a month ago. I went from 378 consecutive barefoot jumps and today I jumped 1520 consecutive barefoot jumps without a miss. I can't believe the progress! Wearing shoes, I was very, very lucky if I could reach 100 jumps without a miss. I hear that barefoot is the way to go for all plyometric exercise. I don't know any plyometric type exercising and I would love to learn. Any thoughts or ideas? Fri, 5 Aug 2011 13:13:44 EST Beginner Minimalist Sneakers? I'm mostly a barefooter. My husband is considering it. He needs new sneakers for work now. He's a physical therapist and in the running for a big promotion. I would like to get him a pair of sneakers that still look like regular sneakers and are somewhere between regular and minimalist in terms of support. Any suggestions? Mon, 25 Apr 2011 10:19:13 EST Just checking to see who's still here I haven't seen a lot of posts in this group, just wondering who is still here. Or is everyone out running all the time?
Also would love to know if any of you are on barefoot/minimalist forums elsewhere.
Chris Mc Dougall's book Born to Run is advertised on Spark so thought it was time to see if we can help him out a little to spread the news. 211

Birgit Fri, 22 Apr 2011 10:45:26 EST VFF foot pain I've been wondering if anyone else experiences foot pain on the ball of your foot where you strike (posed running) while wearing VFFs? Hey SParkers!

I started running in my Vibrams a few months back - started at about 1/2 a mile and have since upped the mileage slowly. Last week I ran 4 miles in them and came out of it with painful, bursted blisters where the seams are inside [I own the Sprints]. It hindered me from running for almost a week so I'm looking into getting another style (I LOVE my VFFs and literally canNOT run in traditional shoes anymore!).

Any suggestions or tips for dealing with VFF... Mon, 7 Mar 2011 18:45:36 EST VFF Question about sizing and comfort I have been running barefoot on the treadmill and decided to pick up a pair of VFF for the road. I got the KSO.

I have a question about sizing and comfort. When I put them on, I have a bunch of room in the toes (maybe up to a 1/2). I am half tempted to cut and sew the last toe toes together, so it isn't spread out.

Thanks... I live near Buffalo so that means snow for many months ongoing. I wear my VFFs at the gym but regular shoes or boots when I go outdoors for a walk. I just watched a YouTube video regarding the VFF Flows. The guy who was reviewing was walking in the snow. I should know of some stretches to do, but my mind is a blank right now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thu, 22 Jul 2010 13:20:35 EST New to barefoot running Hi, I just got my invisible shoe kit in the mail yesterday! I used to own a pair of VFF Classics, but somehow managed to lose one over the course of several moves. I received that pair for free from a friend who worked there, so I wasn't as mad as I would have been if I had paid for it, but it was still upsetting enough. I loved my Classics, I used them to play kickball and for some running. However, I was running with them without knowing anything about needing to adjust my form, I had never... Thu, 15 Jul 2010 12:56:29 EST Born to Run's Christopher McDougall on NPR this AM On Diane Rehm - only caught the beginning though.

Just thought it was kind of cool - and I was also a bit annoyed by the doc on the show. I went to a podiatrist a few months ago for a pain in my foot that won't go away and asked what he thought of barefoot running. He said "I think we need the extra cushioning now for our modern lifestyles" - I thought that was ridiculous! We sit most of the time now!!! :P Mon, 12 Jul 2010 11:51:08 EST Looking for my group this whole life I love going barefoot and do so as often as possible. Most shoes, sneakers and other footwear hurt my feet and take forever to break in. In addition, I have a small foot with a high arch. Finding shoes that fit is a nightmare. I especially like to exercise barefoot so try to find exercise that accomodates that goal. I'm so happy I found this group and look forward to interacting with many of you. Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:51:57 EST cool dancing "shoe" Here's a foot covering very popular with tribal belly dancers. The covering lets you twirl, but otherwise, leaves your feet free. I see that as a good thing.

Got two more members here in the past few days to bring the total to 39. Not bad for such a niche category, 11 more and we will have an even 50. Tue, 4 May 2010 23:19:25 EST local news report on barefoot running The local Fox affiliate had a short story and video on barefoot running...I checked the web site...they didn't have the video but here is the story. Mon, 3 May 2010 23:50:13 EST My Experience with Vibrams Hi guys,

I know there has been a lot of interest in this forum about the Vibram Five Fingers, so I thought that I would post my experience with them thus far.

I ordered a pair of VFF Sprints from at the beginning of February, right before my running group started on the Couch to 5K program. I ordered them sight unseen, using the sizing guidelines on the VFF website, and managed to buy the right size. I have now run most of the C25K program pretty much exclusive... Wed, 28 Apr 2010 20:20:10 EST Invisible Shoe Huaraches Kit Well I got and constructed my first pair of Huaraches from
. Once I figured out how the heck to tie the damn things up, I found them to be quite comfy and wearable...

Invisible uses Vibram material for the soles and it is quite sturdy, and light weight. If you want to feel the ground just as well as the FiveFingers, want to pay 1/3 or less the price, and can follow simple directions... I highly recommend this option. (Heck if you want ... Mon, 26 Apr 2010 20:17:14 EST a question Hi everyone!
A little background.... I have been wearing vff or a pair of vivo barefoots since September and totally love them both.

Since it has been warm out (yey for spring!) I have started c25k using my vff.

Last week was my week 2 and after my last run of the week my big toes swelled up. The bottoms where a little sore as well....

This past week I have not ran at all (work has gotten crazy), so I have had time to heal (or something).

I ... On my lunch break today, I went for a walk along the Lake Michigan shoreline and out on a pier.

The weather is still a bit cold, but it still felt great. (Especially when wiggling my toes in the sand.)

How bout you? What did you do barefoot today? Wed, 24 Mar 2010 13:47:53 EST Again?! women's VFF Performa delayed I preordered a pair back in November when I thought they'd be ready by the end of the year, and now I see on Kayak Shed that Vibram isn't sending them any until mid March. It seems like Vibram has some serious production issues they need to take care of if they're going to try to keep up with demand.

(Just a quick vent, and in case any one else is in my shoes (get it, heheh :p), wondering where their shoes are.) Fri, 19 Feb 2010 21:56:38 EST Barefoot 5k-er Hello Team!

My name is Aileen, and I've been a Sparker since October. I'm planning to run my first 5k this year, and due to my love of being barefoot (combined with inspiration from reading Born to Run), I'm hoping to do it sans footwear.
I'm so excited to do this, and I was very happy to discover this team! Fri, 22 Jan 2010 10:06:49 EST Huaraches, the original minimalist footwear In the book Born to Run, Barefoot Ted took some time to explore the types of sandals that the Tarahumara wore. The Tarahumara sandals, known as Huaraches, consist of tire tread soles and leather straps.

Some in the BF/minmimalist footwear world think that huaraches are superior to the Vibram Fivefingers and similar products. My calves are a little sore, so will stretch them out. I run with my dog, but I might stop doing that. She's very little and I hook her leash to my pants with a caribeaner. She kept darting off the road to check stuff out and almost tripped me a bunch. Maybe I'll leave her at home next time. I may go out again later today. All in all, good second day.
67
-Sarah K Mon, 5 Oct 2009 12:08:38 EST Where? Where do you do your minimalist running? On natural terrain? Cleared trails? Tracks? Pavement?

I've only done one bare-run so far, and that was at an indoor track. I typically run (shod) either there or on a bike trail (with fine gravel). I think I could do the trail in minimalist gear...not so sure about barefoot yet. Tue, 29 Sep 2009 15:47:13 EST Minimalist Runner GoogleGroup Here is the Google group that is linked from Barefoot Ted's site (somewhere). I thought it might be of interest.

There is a considerable archive of information there already. Easier on the body. ;) Fri, 18 Sep 2009 15:32:48 EST Well, I tried it! Tonight was slow and quiet at the indoor running track. So halfway through my workout, I stripped my feet. I did intervals, but all told I probably walked 1/2 mile and ran another 1/2 mile unshod.

I gotta say, I really liked the feel. Without even thinking about form, I ran almost exclusively on the balls of my feet. (OMG it hurts to heel-strike...why on earth do we wear shoes which encourage it??) I will try again soon. I've done a few barefoot walks on pavement but am not sure I'... Wed, 16 Sep 2009 23:48:11 EST Favorite Near - Barefoot Running Gear? To learn and share about natural and barefoot exercise gear. I have never tried a minimalist running shoe before, but have been very intrigued by the research.
