SparkPeople Skate and Destroy (Derby Girls Unite!) Team Messageboard SKATE AND DESTROY!!! Roller derby girls who want to lose weight and/or get healthy! We want to be the best of the best for our teams and ourselves! Future derby girls are also welcome! SparkPeople Skate and Destroy (Derby Girls Unite!) Team Messageboard Need Knee Pad Recommendations First, I am not skating derby but just skating in a rink for fun. But whenever I fall I hit my knees and have had some bad falls. The last one left me very bruised and swelled and I have had X-rays to make sure that I didn't break anything!!
So I am hoping to find a reliable knee pad that would offer protection when I fall. I was hoping to find some brands that you might recommend? I will probably buy them on Amazon. Most of what I saw on Amazon was for children...but I did find a brand... Sat, 23 Mar 2013 18:27:48 EST Wheel placement help I've been skating now for about 3-4 months, and am getting close to passing my minimum skills test. We skate on a pretty slick concrete floor, and I found I am so much more stable and fast while using Poison wheels, which I absolutely *love*! As soon as I put them on, they felt "right" :) The only problem is that I find it harder to plow stop (I can still do it,) but *impossible* to T-stop (I always had trouble with this stop, but I can do it in my Atom Snaps) my back foot just keeps bouncing... Thu, 11 Oct 2012 16:43:45 EST crosstraining Hey all i'm new to this group!
what's everyone doing to cross train outside of practice??? Tue, 21 Aug 2012 11:22:29 EST Howdy Hi all,

I'm newish to this group (been lurking for awhile). I'm in my second bouting season now, after starting derby in Oct 2010. I'm with the Soul City Sirens. I'm super excited to work on my fitness outside of derby. I've really noticed a big difference in my speed and endurance since I've been running. I just need to be more consistent in my running (need to set specific days for it, instead of just running here and there). Wed, 8 Aug 2012 09:10:18 EST Brand New Hi, my name is Heather (no derby name yet)... my first practice is tomorrow. I'm working on getting in shape and getting to be an adequate skater at the moment. The team I joined is focusing on Derby 101 and recruiting right now and has a few people who are well experienced so I thought it could be a good fit. They are called Heavy ArmHer (we're on an ARMY base... assuming it was named by a tanker's wife like me lol). I do have my own gear but no experience. :)
So... since I'm brand new... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 00:27:18 EST FRESH MEAT...Kind of :) Hey all, my name is Wilde Hysteria I skate with the Southern Oregon Rollergirls in Medford, OR. I joined SP a while back, but fell off the wagon so to speak. Time to take charge and responsibility for myself and really work on me! We have some down time for the summer and I'd love to get back to skating soon. As my profile says, I've been plagued with injuries and I'm really ready to be done with that and be healthy and I know that dropping a few pounds will def help with that.

... Thu, 5 Jul 2012 17:44:56 EST How do you carry your skates?! I got my own skates! I love them...better than rentals but the first night I used them they were slow? They feel better now though. I had some rubs & blisters from them, but I am going to get one of those moleskin things and stick where I am rubbing (inside my skates) because they are my skates...and now I know where I get rubbed around. That should help me skate with less problems!
So I have been carrying them around by hand. Kind of feels awful to carry them around by the laces, so I ... Tue, 26 Jun 2012 18:54:58 EST My toe is numb... It is my big toe on my right foot. Its been numb since I started skating a few weeks ago. I figured it would go away-yet it hasn't. I don't think it is broken though...I can bend and wiggle it all I want. It is just numb on the bottom part of the toe, and the side closest to my left side.
I was just wondering...what causes that? I keep thinking maybe my skates are the wrong size. But it doesn;t go away even days after not skating.
Sun, 3 Jun 2012 14:32:44 EST June Goals Hey everyone!!!

Do you have any goals for June? Fri, 1 Jun 2012 17:53:46 EST New Skater!! I hope you don't mind that I am just regular skating, not roller derby? I don't even think there is a roller derby team in this area...but it sounds interesting and this looks like a good place to meet others skaters.
I have skated when I was a kid. About 4th -6th grade. I remember really enjoying it even though I wasn't skinny. Though looking back I wasn't too big either. I owned my own skates and between my feet outgrowing them and I not getting another pair, and we moved (away from th... Sun, 27 May 2012 15:22:19 EST BOUT! Who has a bout this weekend? I am Fresh Meat with Hard Knox Roller Girls. I love derby, I am obsessed with derby, I am addicted to derby. :) I started skating in 2011 then I got pregnant, as soon as my doctor gave me the "okay" to workout again, I was back on skates. My daughter is now 5 months old and I have been skating since she was 6 weeks old. I am still fresh meat due to some additional time trials on our MST that I have yet to pass. I just can't skate 5 laps backward in one mi... Sun, 20 May 2012 11:41:26 EST Wrist Guards Hello,

Please can anyone recommend some REALLY good wrist guards?

Since I've broken my wrist skating and don't want to do it again once I'm better :o(

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=4802244

Thank you!

Rach xxx Sat, 24 Mar 2012 09:41:14 EST Team Map I checked the team map and there are only three flags on there. I love being able to see where everyone is so it would be really cool if team members could enable the 'show on team map' option in their settings.

I'm mostly just nosey, but Derby is taking over the world, so it would be fab to see how we spread out. :) Thu, 19 Jan 2012 06:29:35 EST Hello from Scotland! Hey ladies (& gents?)

I'm just returning to my league after 18 months off. 12 months of pain after a broken tailbone that took a LONG time to stop hurting constantly, then 6 months thinking about building up my confidence again. I'm back at our recruits course for a while to get back up to speed and also to get back to the point (weight-wise) I was at before I was injured to carry on with that fitness/diet journey.

Have to dash as I have practice tonight. So glad to... Tue, 17 Jan 2012 13:30:58 EST Going back to derby? Hey guys! I skated for four seasons in Chicago, and had to retire due to a knee injury I just couldn't come back from (I'm still paying for the physical therapy that didn't help). That was about three years ago. I moved out to the burbs in NW Indiana for work, and there's a new league just starting up out here. It's in the very early stages -- there hasn't even been a skating session yet.

I'm really torn on it, because I miss derby every day, but I don't want to get injured again, ... The off season is quickly approaching for my team so I want to be diligent at keeping at my fitness goals. I really like the nutrition feedback charts! They're making it way easier to eat in a more balanced way. I haven't been practicing regularly since I'm officially (semi) retired. I'll be doing an open scrimmage this weekend and can't wait to get back on my skates. Thu, 20 Oct 2011 00:36:44 EST Building Muscle vs. Burning Calories? Hi Everybody,

Since breaking my tib/fib in December, I have been back to skating for about 2.5 months. I've rebuilt a lot of muscle in my thighs and elsewhere and I feel great.

When you started skating more often, did your weight stay stagnant? I have been burning ridiculous amounts of calories and staying within my calorie range every day, but I have only lost about 1 lb./month (frustrating!). I know that I have been building back my muscles, so I'm trying to be patient... Mon, 18 Jul 2011 12:03:29 EST My Derby Weekend What are everyone's derby plans for the weekend?

Tomorrow I am driving up to NYC with the DC All Stars to coach them playing a Gotham home team! Fri, 8 Jul 2011 09:46:08 EST Hello from DC Hi!
I am a member of the DC Rollergirls and really working to get down to my pre-relationship weight. I have been active on SparkPeople since March.

I have found through derby that sometimes I have a lot of motivation to go to every practice, the gym, yoga, running and sometimes I barely can drag myself to the minimum number of practices and forget about outside of derby workouts.

I have been skating for 4 seasons, bouting for 3.

Excited about joining thi... Mon, 25 Apr 2011 23:57:37 EST Numb toe solutions Hello,
I'm freshmeat and relatively new to skating...
My skates were professionally fitted in a skate shop (specializing in derby skates, owned by derby girls), so I know they fit properly. However, after about an hour of skating, my toes start to get numb. Is this due to the way I lace my skates? Or does it have to do with my endurance?
I'd appreciate any solutions/advice you may have...
thanks! Thu, 31 Mar 2011 13:18:53 EST Other Exercise? What do you do to work out besides derby? I believe cross training is very important to becoming a better skater and would love to hear what everyone does. I am hoping to join a derby team in the next year, but for now I am just practicing on my outdoor quads. I look forward to getting to know some other kick@$$ girls and get ready for my own spot in the action. Wed, 7 Oct 2009 13:26:22 EST Alli? Hey Kat - You had mentioned that before you used Alli as part of your diet & exercise program to drop those 50 lbs. Did you like it? Were there any crazy side effects, like being all speedy or anything? Thu, 6 Aug 2009 10:09:08 EST Recipe Builder Does this site have any type of recipe builder? That's one thing I really love about Weight Watchers online. I am not the cook in the house. So when Blair makes dinner, I ask him to tell me what he is putting into say his chili. I can then enter all that info and WW will calculate the points for the final dish instead of having to guess.

Thanks!

Pinky Wed, 5 Aug 2009 17:09:55 EST Week 1 - Weigh in!!! I lost 3 lbs this week!

It's amazing what eating better foods will do for you!

Also, getting back into riding my bike and lifting weights have already made a difference in my skating. I felt much more comfortable against Charm City yesterday and even got past Dolly with reasonable ease a couple of times. Way better experience then when Detroit played them at ECE! Mon, 3 Aug 2009 10:31:10 EST AWESOME. Hey Everyone,
I saw the chatter about this on Facebook and decided to join, because I'm having a hell of a time dropping the pounds. I've gained about 30 pounds since college and I'm only now starting to realize that it's not gonna go away by itself.

The boy and I are going to Jamaica in October and I know that if I go as-is, I'll spend half my time there trying to cover up and avoiding photos. I just want to feel comfortable with my body so that I can concentrate on having ... Tue, 28 Jul 2009 14:12:24 EST Let's get this started! Ok kiddies, a long time ago in a far away land called Detroit, Kat used to weight 180 lbs and was a blocker.

Kat came out of retirement and lost 50 lbs and became a jammer.

Kat slacked off and has gained 12 or 13 lbs and she would like to lose that again!
