SparkPeople Run For Fun, Tryin' For Flyin'! Team Messageboard All levels of running are welcome! Come share with fellow runners as we encourage each other to meet our goals. We don't run unless we have fun, but we aren't afraid of a little friendly competition! SparkPeople Run For Fun, Tryin' For Flyin'! Team Messageboard Rest days I've been running for a while now, and I also Roller skate 2-3 times a week. I know that I should be cross training, which I tell myself Roller Derby accounts for, but what about rest days? I am trying to keep a 10 min of fitness a day streak going, and I feel like rest days are counter productive to THAT, yet I know they are important. Basically, I'm wondering what people on here do on rest days, and how often you take them?

Many thanks!

U_T Wed, 26 Jun 2013 10:13:57 EST Colour Run

SO. What got you involved in running? Why do you love it? Let's share stories and be an inspiration to our other members!

As for me, I was never, ever very athletic, and often quite sick as a child. What got me into running as an adult was my puppy, which you can see on my sparkpage. I knew that Basenjis require lots of exercise so when I got him, I was prepared for lots of walks, and I thought this would be good for me as well - kinda forces one to become fitter! Well, after awhile, w... Sun, 14 Apr 2013 14:34:03 EST What running strategy works for you? When it gets tough, what do you do mentally or physically to make it to the finish line?
Sometimes I like to pretend that I am in a much longer race than what it really is. That might sound weird, but actually it helps because I tell myself I'm no where near finished, even if I'm past halfway....then when I actually am finished, it didn't seem to take that long. This helps me pace myself too because if I think I have a LONG way to go, I don't try to go to fast and over-do it.

... Fri, 26 Oct 2012 08:04:40 EST Pains from running on the treadmill My lower back on the right side has a splitting pain every time I run on the treadmill. It doesn't happen when I run outdoors. Mon, 2 Jan 2012 12:17:28 EST Hello! I'm new here... Hello all. I just joined the team - I've been on SP since April, and started running in August. I have found that I have enjoyed it far more than I'd ever hoped to! I ran in my 4th (yes, 4th - I'm hooked!) 5K today in particularly frigid weather for October in Ohio. Despite that, I still managed to take a few seconds off my time from the 3rd race and came in 2nd in my age group (I'm still shocked). Thu, 8 Sep 2011 09:48:45 EST New to running I started my journey at 323 lbs and in a major depression. Since then I have lost almost 40 lbs and I'm feeling a lot better about myself. I started out walking to lose the weight, but have since moved up to running about a month and a half ago. When I first started out I could barely run 1 minute then walk 1 minute at a time. However, now I can comfortably run for 10 minutes without stopping and I feel great about it. I can't wait to see how far I can get with my training. I am looking forwa... Fri, 15 Jul 2011 15:47:53 EST Started at 300lbs, down to 240 and RUNNING! Hi there! I wanted to join a running group with people who I can ask questions or suggestions to. Since i started this journey (October 15, 2010) my goal has been to just be able to run, that's where I started. When I got on a treadmill at the gym, I couldn't run because it hurt my knees too much. After the first 20lbs were gone I tried it again and was able to run for 2 minutes. I had quit smoking so I attributed my "asthma" (major difficulty breathing) to 7 years of smoking. That may have b... I signed up as a way to push myself into shape, besides the supporting a good cause part. But I have no idea in how to train for that, I guess i just got to run! I ran a little over 3 miles the other day I was really proud of myself, but that kinda scared me, because it took me a long time for that and I have committed to run for 13 miles. WOW "what was I thinking?!" Sat, 17 Jul 2010 02:44:40 EST Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer I have a Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer with a watch and a shoe pod that I have had for some time. When I first began using it years ago it was incredibly accurate. I hadn't used it in some time but I got it out, changed the batteries and recalibrated it on a 400 meter track. But when I run it is considerably off on mileage and speed. Does anyone have one of these? Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong? My name is Kristi and I'm from North Texas. My ultimate goal is to run in the Cowtown Marathon in 2011. I'm not training yet. I plan to begin in April, following the birth of my son in just a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to the challenges and accountability this team presents for me!

~Kristi Thu, 28 Jan 2010 09:21:49 EST Training for 10k Hi there. What do you all recommend for training for a 10k. It's in May so I have about 12 more weeks. I'm doing the spark your way to a 10k and I'm on week 2. Do you think this is the best program? Ideally, how long will it take to run a 10k? Thanks! Wed, 27 Jan 2010 12:19:39 EST 10k..possible? Hello there. I am new to running and am on week 2 of the spark to 10k plan. I am planning on doing a 10k in May. Do you think this is possible if I am only running twice a week for training? My issue is my kids. The only time I have to exercise is at night when they go to sleep and I do an exercise DVD. On the weekends I can run outside and/or go to the gym because hubby is here. What do you think? Possible? Every training plan i see says to run 3 days a week but that seems way too little..thoughts? Hi out there,

I am just learning about HIIT training, as I was thinking it could help me with getting ready for a 10K I'm doing at the end of March.

I'm running the Cooper River Bridge 10K in Charleston, SC...the bridge has a 4% slope and is 2.5 miles that's 1.25 miles going up at that slope and 1.25 miles going down it.

In what I've found, it seems like HIIT can help prepare me to handle that bridge...anyone have any thoughts or experience with it? Thu, 14 Jan 2010 08:17:39 EST Hi Fellow Runners!! Hi everyone! My name is Mackenzie and I am 25 years old and live in Orange County, CA. I was training to run for a marathon but i fell off the wagon around October and really want to get running again. I think part of the issue was I challenged myself TOO much. I've never run a race before so now i'm shooting to do a 10k, then half marathon, THEN the marathon! Cant wait to make friends, share stories, advice and all that good stuff! Tue, 12 Jan 2010 00:31:42 EST January Plans....miles, races, and training What are your plans for January.... Mon, 11 Jan 2010 11:40:22 EST Enjoy the feeling jogging gives!! I am new to spark. I did my first half marathon last year. I did a few 5k's and decided I wanted to join a friend and do a half. Will be doing the ING Georgia and the Iron Girl 15k in Florida in a few months. I am getting in my long runs and crosstraining. Gotta get past work and weather and get in my weekly times. I am not a treadmill fan at all so I have avoided it like the plague. Really motivated to stay in training mode all year and do a couple more halfs later in the year. Just curious how others train as far as indoors/outdoors/combination of the two/trails?

I run outdoors almost exclusively. I cannot stand the treadmill. I tried again yesterday and literally .2 miles into it, I was already checking to see how much further I had to go. I love being outside because the scenery changes as you move! Even on a track where the scenery repeats, at least it moves! I've never really trail-run but I'd like to try it. Not as a means of training, but just for... In October I ran my first 5k in years.(Run for the Cure) and lost about ten pounds training for it. Since then the weight has come back on so I've set a new goal. In Kamloops, BC we have the first run of the year approx. in March called the spring river run off and its a 10k. So that is my next goal Tue, 29 Dec 2009 22:05:25 EST Heart Rate Monitor I'm looking to buy myself a heart rate monitor to help me monitor my training progress. I guess what I need it to be able to do is measure my heart rate during training (spin/strength/running). And help me learn how to pace on outdoor runs. The other thing on the wish list is that it looks good (on a girls wrist) and can be worn full time, not just during training.

I've spent the last 2 days endlessly researching but can't narrow it down to just 1. Thu, 17 Dec 2009 11:58:42 EST New Team Leader Hi Everyone,

My name is Mary and I have volunteered to be the new team leader for this group. A little bit about me...I have been running on and off - mostly off since 1999. Starting in 2009, I decided I wanted to be a life long runner.

Currently, at the end of my half marathon training I have been sideline with a case of tendonitis in my left foot. I will be back to finish off my last 2 weeks of training before the Disney Half Marathon.

Wed, 16 Dec 2009 12:55:12 EST Mileage Per Week: Intermediate Fitness I've read/heard/been told various views on how many miles a runner can safely run each week. Now, I realize it largely depends on the individual. Let's just say the person has been jogging on and off for a year and can complete a 5k without difficulty in under 30 minutes.

Is it possible for such an individual to safely jog, say, 30 miles per week--every week?

If not, why? Is it simply a matter of fitness level?

I myself am considering alternating 10k's and 5k'... I ran last year and had to stop because my left knee hurt so badly for about three months. This time I thought I would start out slower but it is starting to hurt again at only one and a half miles. Before I started training for the 5k, I used to take classes at my gym, and lift weights too, but since I decided to do this 5k, I mainly run, and I love it! So, I'm supposed to go for a 7.5 mile run today (trying to build up to a long run of 10+ miles) but it's SUPER windy out right now and the weather channel reports a high possibility of scattered thunder storms throughout the day. I really don't want to be halfway out and then have to run over 3.5 miles in a thunderstorm. Plus, I hate running against the wind (currently it's 20mph). Anyway, what I'm wanting to know is if YOU would run if there was a possibility that you could be running back i... Sun, 8 Mar 2009 10:19:48 EST Uh oh, my knees are starting to hurt! I've continued running, but have just come out of my off-season (aka, the holidays) and am getting back into gear.

While I once ran 4-6 miles, 3-5 times a week, I currently max out at 3 miles. Darn that... Thu, 8 Jan 2009 10:48:31 EST Hi from AZ! I'm Natalie. I just ran my first 5K on my 36th birthday last November.

I've never been athletic and always thought running was pretty cool, but something I could never do with my short legs. I'm now realizing it's something you have to work on to develop, just like any other skill or talent.

I want to get better and train for a 10K. Wed, 31 Dec 2008 08:14:45 EST Hi from North Carolina I am new to this site and felt it was a great support group to be a member. I have been a runner for many years but in the past few years there have been some bumps. I am trying to resume my running and get on a regular schedule. I have competed in some races and even completed two marathons in the past. I know I will not return to that level but would like to get fit again. Looking forward to participating and meeting the members in this group. Wanda Mon, 8 Dec 2008 18:27:10 EST Hello from FL :) Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to running...started on october of this year!. I can now run 4 miles comfortably and signed up for my first 10K on 12/ I've been training for that (distance and pace wise). I'm dealing with a Morton neuroma so that has slowed down my training a bit (currently on alcohol shots every two weeks, my 3rd was this week and it's already better!).

I look forward to this group and getting tips/advices from other runners!

Cheers,
Andreina Wed, 3 Dec 2008 14:15:14 EST Winter running Hi guys,
It will be winter here soon (Quebec, Canada), with it's generous gift of snow and ice. I would like to keep running outside because (I'm insane) I don't own a treadmill, like winter and don't want to lose what I've gained so far (I do own an elliptical but I use it in addition to running). I was just wondering if any of you plan to do it, how you go about it and what kind of gear you have (specific to footwear - I'm ok with other clothing).
Thanks!
Soon-to-be-freezing... Tue, 18 Nov 2008 09:49:10 EST Hi from (really cold) Quebec! Hi guys! I started running in early September and just finished my Couch to 5K program. I hadnt completely stopped because I have been running on the treadmill at the gym but it just isnt the same to me and I truly do not enjoy it like I do to get out. So, with my birthday coming up ... Since I have low arches, I can't afford to wear shoes that lack proper support. Now the market is flooded with shoes that are very expensive to pretty cheap. Hi, just thought I'd join up with you guys. I started running (for the first time ever) in April with the Couch 2 5K Program and I'm totally hooked. Sat, 26 Jul 2008 13:31:46 EST stopped the soda? Okay, I used to drink full leaded coke ALL the time. Then I switched to Diet. I hear a lot that the body still thinks the fake sugar is real sugar and still makes you crave more snacks, sugar whatever. So I'm cutting back (can't quit altogether if I want to remain a decent human being!) by not buying any for home. My question is has anybody stopped drinking DIET soda and noticed a weight change? I'm wondering if this will change my appetite? 222 Thu, 24 Jul 2008 18:43:24 EST Hi from the west! Hi everyone! I am married and have 2 kids, ages 5 and 2. I recently began running at the beginning of January as my New Year's Resolution to lose weight. At the beginning I had to force myself to stick with it, but have grown to really love to run. I run on average 4-5 days each week and I am currently up to about 3.5 miles per run/walk. I am also training for my first 5k race in April, which I am very excited about. Up to this point I have only bee... Wed, 20 Feb 2008 11:22:31 EST My first 12K I ran my first 12K on Saturday. It was a great race. The weather was perfect and the course was fairly easy, besides the fact that they didn't completely stop traffic on the busiest road. Most of it was flat and through a residential neighborhood, the same neighborhood I usually run in anyway. I ended up finishing the 7.46 miles in 1 hour and 4 minutes.... an average pace of 8:38. I was very happy with that! Just wanted to share!! Tue, 19 Feb 2008 10:45:12 EST Hello Hello Hello fellow runners. I am joining this team after I finished my first run of the new year.

I love to run. I have run TONS of 5ks, a half marathon, and 3 full marathons. I finished my last marathon at the beginning of December. I had to take a few months off due to an injury, but today I got back out there and felt GREAT. Running is totally my thing.

I am gong to be doing my first 10k in the beginning of April so I will be getting back into things slowly. Sat, 16 Feb 2008 16:50:36 EST Training Last night, I ran an easy 3.62 miles...and I ran it under 9 1/2 minutes...which is REALLY good for me! I'm used to 11 minute miles because my running partner is a bit slower than me. I was surprised at how easy it was to pick up the pace, and I was even more surprised that my body naturally found a good running stance. My form was stronger and my stride smoother. My knees stopped hurting and I felt AWESOME when I was done! I'm going to have to increase my training pace, with or without m... Fri, 15 Feb 2008 14:28:24 EST Are carbs really THAT bad? Hey, I need some runners' input! I'm tracking my food everyday, and I'm always within my calorie range. Usually my protein is very close (about half of the days it's under), my fat looks great, but I'm always over on carbs by about 10-70 grams. But I'm also a runner who runs about 17-26 miles/week. So is being high on carbs really all that bad for my weight loss goals? Tue, 5 Feb 2008 06:38:57 EST How many miles today? Like many threads you see on points for the day - I thought it would be cool to see how many miles we all cover each day. Tue, 29 Jan 2008 21:05:32 EST Hi all--New "Trotter" here I think of myself as more of a trotter since I am not really a runner or a jogger-- sort of in between. I have completed one full marathon and a couple of halfs. Of course all have been Disney. I like to do "different" races--like the Las Vegas Santa run. That was really neat. Hoping to draw inspiration from all of you to get leaner and maybe even quicker.
30 Tue, 29 Jan 2008 18:50:35 EST spinning /running Anyone love spinning AND running? how do you balance it? Tue, 6 Nov 2007 22:07:13 EST New Here Hi all! I'm new to the team. I've been running for about 3 years now. I've picked up about 10 pounds in the last year and I can totally feel it in my runs. I'm looking to lose that.
I just completed my second marathon a little over a week ago, so I'm looking for motivation to keep running and particularly to watch the diet. Tue, 6 Nov 2007 11:54:21 EST Treadmills I am thinking about getting a treadmill so that I can run during the winter when it is crappy outside. I'm a little lost when it comes to research.

Does anyone have recommendations or things I should look for? I'm a little worried about cost and it seems a lot of "runner" treadmills are super expensive.

Any help would be appreciated. Anyway, looking forward to "meeting" everyone! Mon, 10 Sep 2007 00:51:09 EST Question for you all... I'm an experienced runner, but I'm going to be in a weird position next week. I'm training for a 5K race in the beginning of October. But next week, I'm going backpacking on an island (about 10 miles by 10 miles) for 6 days. During that time, I "should" (according to the Plan) run 2 times, 3 miles each. But for 5 days, I'll be backpacking probably about 3 miles/day with a backpack on. Also, there's no running water (for showers), although there will be a cold lake (Lake Michigan) and I co... Tue, 4 Sep 2007 23:26:13 EST Headahce Prevention So, I just got back from a walk/run. Does anyone have a good training program. Also I would REALLY like to be able to get up early in the am to run, however I am super lazy in the morning. Open to any suggestions. Thanks!
