SparkPeople Runner Girls United Team Messageboard http://www.sparkpeople.com/assets/nav/nav_logo_v3.gif http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_individual.asp?gid=28100 Hello! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x53327175 Hi everyone!
I'm a 40-something woman who has been running for a couple of years now. I just recently completed my 4th half marathon, am thinking about a marathon, and am currently between races. As I'm between races, I thought it would be a good time to focus on my weight loss goals as I find it really hard to train properly for races while dieting.

I am looking forward getting to know every one. I'd like to get a few pairs of shorts this year, but I am having trouble finding some that don't ride up. Any recommendations? I just ran a half marathon and am thinking about traveling to florida to run the Biggest Loser Half Marathon on Dec. 29th. I'm not sure, it is a very long way to travel from Ohio. Thu, 9 May 2013 20:47:38 EST Hi everyone http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x53220201 Hi,
I'm brandy. I have had an on and off again love affair with running, but right now I'm back at it. Just did my first 5k this morning in 3 years and the running bug has officially bitten me again. Sat, 4 May 2013 19:05:55 EST Hi! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x53132643 Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I've finally started running regularly, after training for and finishing a half marathon (walking) two weeks ago- my first ever! My next race is the Dirty Girl Mud Run in Scranton- I'm meeting some friends there and we're making a girls weekend of it. After that, my focus will be on training for a 5k in July and trying to run the whole thing. I also like Zumba, swimming, yoga, and weights. :D Sat, 27 Apr 2013 21:51:50 EST Just... EXCITED! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x28100x53118423 I just wanted to say I'm so excited because I am running 15 minutes at a time now. I have no pain or anything for the first time in a couple of years. I think I will chalk that up to shortening my stride and increasing my turnover. I'm over the moon, girls. SO EXCITED. I've been trying to get back into running for 2 years, and this past month or two has been fantastic. It is taking patience, but I am so hopeful! Fri, 26 Apr 2013 13:40:21 EST hello fellow runner girls :) http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x53103360 i am definitely not new to spark, but new to this team and to actually calling myself a 'runner'... i had always considered myself a slow, chubby jogger who aspired to be a runner. but since i'm running 4 days a week, training for a half marathon in october, and racing a 10K this sunday, i am taking the plunge and finally calling myself a runner :)
anika Thu, 25 Apr 2013 09:50:43 EST A Newbie both to the Team and Spark People http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x53056934 Hi Everyone,

I'm 39, wife, mother of one and work full time. My son runs competitively, my husband took up running because we were "there anyway" and they finally nagged me into it lol. My trainer set me a goal to work up to 40kms a week and do it consistently by September. I'm currently up to about 30-35 kms a week but this includes race walking.

I have three goals at the moment. 1 to run 5kms without needing to take a break at the halfway mark. I've been a runner for a long time, but since my daughter was born 8 months ago have only been on a few runs. She absolutely HATED the jogging stroller and would scream bloody murder the entire run. Now she is big enough to sit without the car seat and she can have some snacks, so as soon as I'm over this cold I have, I will be attempting a short run. Hoping to get her used to it. My last race was when I was 20 weeks pregnant with her - over a... She has gone through and recovered from so many injuries that she makes me feel so motivated to overcome any little setbacks along the way.

The running advice in the book is solid (I think), but really it is her stories about her journey as a runner that had me hooked. But my feet HATE it. I'm completely flat-footed and run in minimalist shoes (which have no arch support, since I don't have arches), but every time I increase distance or speed, I get horrible painful blisters towards the front of where my arch should be. My feet adjust and the blisters heal after a while, but then I increase speed or distance again. Are there better shoes I should be wearing? Some kind... I went out for my run yesterday, and after maybe 4,5 steps, I felt that horrible feeling that let me know my tampon didn't hold up. I cut it short immediately and walked home the shortest route possible. So, what works for you? Any particular brand of product? I hate putting off my training because I'm afraid that I'll end up with major leakage / dripping. I have been running for about 4 years now...started primarily due to a hypertension diagnosis. Then it became my sanity! The last 6 months has become the season of races for me, and I brought my husband on board! Our first race was the ATM in Oct, where we lost 15 minutes on our time due to my bladder! He won't let me forget that! I must not let that happen again! But it's fun. I enjoy it, I crave it, need it! Love to run! It tracks miles, time, calories burned (though I don't think that part is very accurate as it does not know how much I weigh), average mile pace etc. I really liked it and plan to use it when I start training for my 5k in March. I'm working on running my first 5K in October, I'll be happy with just finishing even if I do have to walk. It was just an off day and I couldn't even run 4 miles. My question is, is it better to just run as much as I can and call it a day? Or should I walk whatever mileage I can't run? I ended up walking the rest yesterday and will attempt 5 miles again next week, but I'm frustrated that the jump from 4 to 5 miles is so difficult. I'm trying to focus one day at a time but it's really mak... Last year I picked up a copy of the book Run Like A Mother by Sarah Bowen Shea & Dimity McDowel (both write for lots of mags including runners world). It talks about fitting it all into your busy life, especially with the craziness and love the kids bring. It is seriously like reading a conversation with good friends. I have been running for a few years now but I took the leap and signed up for half marathon for this August. I just finished week one, where I was running 4 intervals of 3 minutes with a 1 minute walk in between. When I get to the last walk, I usually repeat it, so I walk for 2 minutes.

I *think* this could be alleviated if I slow down a little, but I don't wanna!!!! I'm a new sparker from Tennessee. I'm currently doing a 10k training plan and I'm really enjoying it. I'm concerned about my knees, but I've been wearing compression braces on them and so far so good! :) I've always enjoyed running, but I've never been very good at it. I'd really like to run a half marathon with my bestie in January (on my birthday, actually!)... that's my goal for now.

Its nice to be here and "meet" you.

Janie :) Tue, 26 Jul 2011 10:36:06 EST New shoes http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x28100x43171360 I went to the running store today to get new shoes. I love my Mizuno's that I've had for over a year, but it was time for a new pair. They didn't have my model in so they had me try a few different ones. I love the running store because they have you go outside the store and actually run in them. And they also fit you properly...I roll my feet inward when I run, but not when I walk. So I settled on a pair Saucony's. I didn't want to spend $140 on the top of the line Muzuno's. The Sauco... Just this summer I've picked up the pace and have run two 5k's (doing another one Saturday!) and have started training for a half marathon in November. I'm 33, mom of 2 boys, college student from Nebraska. I've been a yo-yo dieter for my entire adult life and I'm hoping to finally have this lifestyle figured out. Last year I tried C25K and fizzled out after a couple weeks. I'm trying it again and I've found this time that I actually LOVE running. It makes me feel strong and confident. This morning I went on a 10.3 mile bike ride - continuously pedaling (no coasting) - and when I tracked it here on SP it said that I had only burned 353 calories. Doesn't that seem a little low? Is it because I am sitting down on the bike instead of standing up like running?

So, running/walking burns more calories than biking? I don't quite get it. I tried doing searches on the internet and can not find reasons it MAY be. Over the past 3 weeks I KEEP running slower and slower and slower and it is so disappointing and I am beating my self up!! I feel horrible over it.

Just 3 weeks ago I was running my 5 miles in 54:55 mins and then now I am at 57:32. I run the same 2 routes for those 5 miles. Each and EVERY time I run slower.
... I've bought six pairs of running shoes since January, all after being fitted twice at a specialty running store.

MY most HATED shoe: Nike Structure Triax 14 (thought my knees and ankles were broken.)

I raced a half marathon last month in Adidas Supernovas, to which I've lost 2 toenails and still have a wonky right knee and achy ankle.

So, what I REALLY want to k... Now I'm wondering if it would be unwise to run every day? I LOVE to run but the training plans always schedule a rest day. Is this necessary? I will be running my first HM race in September and can't wait. I am lucky to have a running partner that lives in my building. We keep each other motivated. Fri, 20 May 2011 14:03:53 EST Another Runner Girl http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x41929757 Hey to all! I'm new here. I've been a runner off and on for about 12 years. Been more on than off for the last year or so. Last October, I completed my first half marathon and then my second (NYC) this past March. I'm training for my 3rd which is this September.

I work full time and may not be on the team every day, but am looking forward to getting to know some of the other runners here on Spark. It's $24 for the box, which is decent, but getting the 2nd box makes it fantastic. Shipping isn't cheap, it's almost $9, but if you are a member of the PR Club, shipping is free and the price drops to $21.60 for the 2 boxes.

Tue, 17 May 2011 18:09:20 EST Training for my 2nd half marathon! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x41854400 Hi! Just joined this team today. I'm looking for a few like-minded Spark friends who will help keep me going as I train for my second 1/2 marathon on July 31 (San Francisco! So excited! My first 1/2 was in Richmond, VA in November 2009). I'm finding the training difficult, as for the moment I'm just using the treadmill because my allergies sometimes act up in the spring. After May, it should be fine to run outside.

ANYWAY, I've been fighting with 10 pounds for the past 6 year... Mon, 16 May 2011 11:28:03 EST I heart running http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x28100x41842600 Hi everyone! My name is Katie and I am from Iowa. New to this group and really excited that there is a group of Runners! Yay! I started running 6 years ago after my college basketball coach told me I needed to lose weight if I wanted my spot on the team back not to mention my scholarship. After having 2 knee surgery's I had gained 30lbs my freshmen year and had no idea how to lose weight. I was never a skinny-mini but had never thought twice about losing weight. So I started running. At firs... Mine is starting to resent the time I devote to running (though he only has to be "on duty" with DD during my long run on Saturdays), and my successes in general.

Any advice? My name is Renee and I had really NEVER ran before January of this year... I wanted to find my inner athlete and worked hard to run a half marathon a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm HOOKED!

I've had a lot of issues with shoes (buying 6 pairs since January) and am trying to minimalist/barefoot approach with success SO FAR.

I look forward to learning from everyone :) Fri, 13 May 2011 17:53:52 EST Having Trouble and Don't know why http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x28100x41742717 Hello ladies

Lately I have been trouble running at speeds and distances that I have had no trouble running in the past. I do most of my training on the treadmill due to my schedule and my little ones that I have at home. Lately it has felt like a chore. When I do get on it and get going I can't seem to get into the groove anymore. I am training for another half-marathon in August and I have done it before. It just seems to be a lot harder to do this time around. I don't know if... Tue, 10 May 2011 15:07:16 EST How do you deal with slow healing injuries? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x28100x41708545 I injured my foot falling off the treadmill at the gym. The ER docs said that nothing was broken and it was just a bad bruise... I don't know how long these types of injuries usually take but it's been 3 weeks and I'm still having issues.

It's nothing I'm not already used to - pain while walking (not a lot but noticeable for me tho I ignore it), limping inducing pain after lots of walking (which includes 20 mins of walking the dogs).. I'm used that really - I sprained my ankle a fe... Mon, 9 May 2011 02:34:19 EST
