Tue, 17 Aug 2010 22:35:45 EST Need some advice I had the worst day with my ADHD student. He tested nearly off the charts on the hyperactivity. Yesterday was one long tantrum. He refused to do any class work, stomped around the classroom, and was verbally abusive. How can I break the cycle when he gets in this mood again? I don't want to see him fail. By the way, I am his mom and this is why I homeschool him. Sat, 14 Aug 2010 14:34:24 EST work plus weight! Anyone else have difficulty eating less and exercising more when working? I'm currently starting my 3rd year as a special education teacher. I teach inclusion high school math at an alternative school. We also have an extended day that puts me at the school from 7AM-4:30PM. It definitely has caused me to gain some weight. I hope to recommit myself to working out more often now that I have completed my education classes. The additional 3 hours a night 2-3 times a week made my life quite a chaotic one! He likes the attention he gets, and to him chase is just so fun. We try to prevent the behavior and we are working on his communication skills so that he can request activities like that, but he can be very unpredictable.
His mom almost... Tue, 15 Sep 2009 00:11:14 EST September Daily Check In Good morning team!
I hope this first day of September finds you all well and making things happen to meet your goals!

Tue, 1 Sep 2009 10:12:45 EST Some creative help needed here! PLEASE! The end of the school year was not completed on a positive note in my district. We are entering the second year of working without a contract. We had a lot of bad publicity in our district when our superintendent was arrested, a teacher was fired, and the board decided to cut positions just because they could. Morale in our building was at its worse because of poor/weak administrative leadership. Still, we are a wonderful group of educators and keep trying.

A couple of colleagu... Mon, 31 Aug 2009 11:13:45 EST Acupuncture My Pilates instructor has allergies like me. She went to an acupuncture person and her nose is no longer running. Mine is still out of control. Does anyone know anyone else this has worked for? I am really tempted. A few needles sounds so much better than the drowsy pills that make me feel like a rag doll...Ragweed doesn't die until mid-October. So I have a long way to go until the clogged nose will go away... Thu, 27 Aug 2009 09:54:53 EST new web site! Hi everyone - I'm working on a web site for my Master's thesis. It's just getting started, but I'd love some feedback. Seriously, please point out any errors or flaws you find in fact or in grammar/spelling/whatever! It's a tough project!

Sun, 23 Aug 2009 21:31:39 EST Roxell's Rant I thought I'd start a new thread for this so I don't clutter up our daily chat with my crap. :) And also so people can skip it if they don't feel like reading about someone else's drama!

SO... I am going to just be selfish and rant, but I just need to get it all out of my system to friends who are not involved or who do not work for my district. When I talk to my husband about it he just wants me to be grateful that I even have a job, which I am, but I could use a little "yeah ... Sun, 23 Aug 2009 19:39:23 EST Another newbie Hi! I am not new to Spark, but I am new to this team.
I teach a K-2 intervention class for kids with autism in Northern California.

This is my 5th year teaching. I started working on my masters last year, but dropped out (we are looking at moving soon and I didn't absolutely love the program) and will resume at a later time. I love teaching, but hate the stress it puts on my body and mind all the time. Every year I am getting better at handling it all, so I have high ho... Sun, 23 Aug 2009 12:53:52 EST Back to school staff meetings, how do you chart? So, I did pretty well today, brought my own lunch and everything for the new teacher orientations. But, I did have a mini chocolate muffin. Only one though. Problem is, I have no idea how many calories are in it. How do you go about charting things like that? Do you just make an educated guess? Maybe I should have thought about that before eating it, haha. :) Mon, 17 Aug 2009 17:53:08 EST How do U survive back to school staff meetings? How do you survive and stick to you diet plan when the school provide donuts, coffee, and Sunny Delight for breakfast and carry-in pizza for lunch and we're supposed to meet and share with other teachers during that time? (If you don't go, you're a loner; if you bring your own food, they think that you think you're too good for their food.) 40 Tue, 11 Aug 2009 07:41:16 EST Materials /Strategy Question For those of you who have read about my tough parents dilemma I have a question.
The psychologist they are using wants to know how we're measuring the student's reading growth when he isn't an auditory learner. We're using DIBELS weekly, just to get words per minute.
She has other questions about vocabulary/comprehension and we're using many different things for this.
I ordered some social skills books last year and used some of the suggestions. We have lunches with peers 3 ti... Mon, 10 Aug 2009 17:35:44 EST About Herbal Magic A couple of people asked on the daily update thread and I thought I would post it in a thread of its own because there may be some who are just not interested and it just doesn't really fit in the daily update forum anyway :).

I'm not sure what details people are looking for but will give a brief overview. Please note that they have several different food plans. I'm on the one for people who need to lose more than 50 pounds (or men). I do not know exact numbers but do know that ... Fri, 7 Aug 2009 19:47:04 EST Dyslexia paper For my English Comp 2 class, I had to choose a topic related to my future career, research it, and write a paper on it. I chose to do mine on "Successful Methods for Teaching Children Who Have Dyslexia". I have learned quite a few great ideas on this topic and have gotten a perfect score on my first draft, which only needed to be three pages in text (not counting the title and reference pages), but now I am having trouble finding enough resources to round out the final draft, which needs to... Thu, 6 Aug 2009 15:47:25 EST Future Special Education Teacher Hi, my name is Michelle, and I am currently attending Ashford University with the goal of becoming a special education teacher. I believe that all children are designed with a plan in mind, and I look forward to the challenge and the reward of helping special needs students to reach their full potentials. Wed, 5 Aug 2009 00:31:45 EST Goals for the 09-10 school year I was just wondering if any of us are making goals to help us through the new school year.

I need to figure out how to keep up the water intake when my new classroom doesn't have a sink, and the nearest water source is too far to get to except at lunch. I also need to get in some exercise during the week, not just the weekend. Finally, I anticipate a challenging year ahead and I don't want to revert back to having NO LIFE outside of school.

I realize these are just t... Mon, 3 Aug 2009 21:39:00 EST
