SparkPeople Seasonal Affective Disorder Team Messageboard Are you "up" & motivated in the spring/summer; start dragging in the fall? How can we get through this? MARCH 8, 2015 - DST STARTS!! TIME TO SPRING AHEAD! SparkPeople Seasonal Affective Disorder Team Messageboard Exercise accountability partner(s)? I love to walk in Summer and Fall, but once Winter hits here in Canada it's icy, snowy and freezing most of the time and it lasts forever (or so it seems!). I am wondering if anyone wants to make a pact to check in on here (private message, on each other's page, whatever) to exercise with a set goal?
I am thinking 3-6x a week, a minimum 10 mins or more. Thu, 8 Sep 2016 20:02:10 EST NEW TO THIS TEAM Hello, my name is Judy. I am new to this team but not to Sparks. I get very depressed during fall and winter months and hoping this team can help me at least a little.
I live in Vermont so change of weather is depressing.
Hope to get some ideas on here to help me deal with it.
223
Judy Sun, 1 Nov 2015 20:11:29 EST Best Book On Depression I've read a lot of books over the years on anxiety and depression. The one I am currently reading (and almost finished) is "Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach You & What Medication Can't Give You" by Richard O'Connor.

I was half expecting it to knock medication or going to your doctor, but they advocate for therapy, going to your doctor, and taking medication (when needed), as well as give a lot of insight into how the depressed person thinks and behaves. I have fo... Fri, 16 Oct 2015 12:08:45 EST Preparing for "The Change." What to do? in seasons and the weather 334

The summer just didn't have the level of impact and feel good that I remember having in the past. I don't know if it really was the weather, or just me. Truthfully, what ever it is or was, it doesn't really matter. Today I am thinking about what can I do for the rest of September to get myself feeling good again and prepared to make the best of the SAD seasons.

My beginning thoughts are below. If this topic resonates with you, ... Sun, 13 Sep 2015 09:40:58 EST DIY sad lamp/dawn simulator Hey y'all.

I've been looking for a sad lamp or dawn simulator but being on such a fixed limited income can't afford what's available on the market. :-(

So, I got to thinking what could work in it's place? Then I thought I could hook up a lamp to a timer and perhaps that would do the trick. I just ordered a new floor lamp and a digital timer from Can't wait to get it to try my idea out. I just hope it works like I want it to.

My bedroom ... How do you kickstart yourself into exercising daily, especially when you are depressed? I know what I should do, I know it would help me feel better, BUT I can't seem to do it. Just curious. For me it started in the winter of 2006/2007 year. I had a lot of stressful situations happen all at once and I think that may have played a part in sparking SAD in me. I also wasn't aware that was what was happening for quite a while, until I saw a therapist and discussed what was going on. I just thought something was wrong with me, I was crazy and a lost cause. I wasn't able to hold a job for a long time due to anxiety and depression. Thankfully once Spring/Summer is here I f... Thu, 20 Nov 2014 19:04:20 EST Diet One of the main symptoms of SAD as we all know is craving carbs and sweets, which often leads to weight gain.
I decided to do some research last night and found plenty of websites talking about what foods to eat and which to avoid.
The main point was to have a protein rich breakfast and lunch, a carb filled snack around 4pm (like popcorn, pretzels, Cheerios, Shredded Wheat, etc) and supper would also be carb heavy with rice, pasta, quiona, waffles, etc.
Has anyone followed so... Thu, 20 Nov 2014 13:13:18 EST Happy To Find This Team I have been on the DWD team for a while, but didn't realize there was one specifically for SAD. Happy to have found it. I have been dealing with SAD since winter of 2006/2007. It took going to therapy to realize what was going on and I have been in and out of therapy since. I am so grateful for my therapist. My SAD symptoms seem to come around Fall, but it's the past week or so I've noticed changes in my sleep pattern and food cravings. Today is the worst it has been so far. I feel like I wan... Sat, 17 May 2014 09:36:16 EST Hello from Northern Minnesota Hi everyone, I'm Marci. I've had SAD for years but have only recently decided that enough was enough and I'm tired of going through this every winter. In Northern MN, winter lasts a long time so that's a good chunk of the year that I feel like this! Anyway, my doc has diagnosed me with "major depressive disorder" even though this is seasonal. I mean, *I* know it's seasonal, but she doesn't ...yet. My husband is retired military so when we lived in places like AZ, TX, UT, Okinawa, I didn't hav... Mon, 24 Feb 2014 12:55:36 EST I've never had SAD before now Hi - I'm Jennifer, 54yo, Texas. I usually have more trouble in the summer actually, but right now I'm DYING. I am SO tired - all I want to do is stay in bed & stay warm. So yeah - cold is part of it. But I have NO energy, NO desire to do ANYthing much except self-medicate with various things (not drugs ok). Everything seems overwhelming. I don't know if it's a lifetime piled up on top of me all at once, or it's SAD. This is the coldest winter we've had in awhile which may be contributi... I also have workout equipment (ski machine, stationary bike, exercise ball) here.

There is plenty of space to put this stuff - in the basement. Thanks! Mon, 28 Oct 2013 11:03:12 EST Hi from "Moving due to SAD" Hey all, I saw this group and just had to join. I moved to Seattle last Christmas and had REALLY been looking forward to it for a long time. The outdoors scene, mild weather in the winters, proximity to skiing/mountains and the ocean, healthy and educated population, not to mention job opportunities... BUT THEN I FOUND OUT I HAD SAD VERY BADLY!!!

I tried all different types and colors of lights, dawn simulators, etc, they helped a bit but I didn't feel normal and they worsened my i... I hope that I can glean some tips here to help her through this time of year. We've had a much better go of it so far because she has been heavily involved in marching band which keeps her outside for several hours each day, but I am dreading when the season is over. Any tips or suggestions? She isn't a kid who likes to be "pushed" into doing something....

Thanks!

~Kelly Sun, 11 Nov 2012 14:07:26 EST Northern Wis Hello! What a great team! In august I was so boosted especially after such a sunny summer we have enjoyed in 2012. Thu, 8 Apr 2010 23:16:43 EST S.A.D. and light boxes... Hi, I'm a mental health therapist and I suffer with SAD myself. I do have a word of caution about the light boxes. They can be wonderful, however, if you have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder in addition to your SAD, the light box can cause you to become manic. Enough said about that. Here are the other things that work. Thirty minutes a day (preferably outside) or sitting in direct light from your window. Yes, the dreaded fish oil capsules (or eating fish). And, in keeping with Spark..... Mon, 29 Mar 2010 10:48:53 EST I've got Spring Fever!! It`s been SO SO nice out lately! I am just loving this weather. I have also been on and off meds for most of my life, which I have finally come to the conclusion that I am better with them!
Look forward to making some new friends!
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:48:41 EST Vitamin D I picked some up; 2000 i.u. tablets. Mon, 17 Nov 2008 22:19:35 EST Another hello from down under Yes Australia does have winters! Particularly down south in Victoria/Tassie. I live in the mountains in Vic and we regularly get snow but fog/cloud is the main issue in winter with it not lifting many days and putting us in a permenant state of no daylight. I used to think I was a bit weird with my very dramatic mood swings in winter but now I know there is a name for it! I am a very different person in the summer and am contemplating moving north where the temperatures don't go below 20. I f... Mon, 3 Nov 2008 21:33:33 EST Hello from Aus! Hi there,

I'm Michelle from Australia and I have S.A.D. We are just about to go into summer here, so its not that bad, but I do have bad swings in winter. They can be quite severe and require anti-depressants. The cravings for carves have hampered my weight loss efforts in the past, with me often living on a loaf of bread and coffee a day!

Last week I had lapband surgery and I'm hoping this will help to curb my appetite for the "wrong" things. I also have PCOS, which... I came home from work, chilled to the bone. I changed into my flannies, and with afghan in hand , headed to the love seat. Didn't cook for no-one. The food demons kicked in. All my choices were healthy, and I stayed within my caloric range. However,I was @ the high end which hasn't happened in weeks. Did not like that feeling of dissension.
I just buried myself on the love seat, and fell asleep.
This was probably a good thing.
I think, no, I K... I seem to be really happy in Spring and Summer. As soon as Fall begins, I have no motivation, have a hard time getting up in the morning and I just seem to have a general melancholy feeling. The worst time for me in January/February. I just want to hibernate in my house. Last January, I felt so crummy that I actually bought a SAD light. It seemed to help somewhat. I've heard of a number of them, including getting 10 minutes of sunlight a day, exercising, and the latest, taking vitamin D supplements. Has anyone tried any of these? How do they work for you?
