May 16 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53361716 Yesterday I asked how you and your mutt are alike personality wise..... So, how do you and your mutt look alike?

I'd say it is all in our double to triple chins! Check out the pics of us on my page! Wed, 15 May 2013 22:29:38 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! May 15 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53352068 In what ways are you just like your mutt?

I guess I can be as needy as he is and I do love human touch.... We are definitely cuddlers. I can be loud when I want to get my point across too and I like to stop and smell the flowers along my walks! Wed, 15 May 2013 08:16:32 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! May 11-12 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53305716 Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies and dog mommies! Does your mutt give you Mother's Day gifts or cards?

Yes! Hubby makes sure I get at least a card from my baby boy! Sat, 11 May 2013 15:39:11 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! May 10 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53286954 What nice things would you own if you didn't have a mutt or 2?

Well, my floors would be polished and unscratched, the big chair would not look as if it was shedding, a couple of cashmere sweaters would not have had to been retired.... But, I wouldn't take clean, polished floors, hairless furniture or clothes, for Jack! He is my heart! Thu, 9 May 2013 23:05:50 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! May 9 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53282842 Sorry this one is so late! When you have had mutts or other pets pass away, did you bury them or have them cremated?

I'm having Jack cremated. I'm going to put some of his ashes and a bit of fur in a locket to wear close to my heart. He is my first dog that is all mine. My sister buried her dogs. Thu, 9 May 2013 16:31:41 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! May 8 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53261815 I think I missed Tuesday's woof! Sorry!

Have you ever been bitten by a dog? Has your mutt ever been bitten by another dog?

Not badly. Now with Jack's brain tumor I think his depth perception is off and if I am feeding him a treat or something by hand he has nipped me and it has hurt, but it isn't an intentional bite. The place where I get my nails done has a little baby poodle and he still chews on fingers and such, but it is just puppy nibbles. I've never had a... Tue, 7 May 2013 23:14:28 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! May 6 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53234017 Where did your love of dogs come from?

My brother, sister and i would get cornered by 3 large, slobbering, growling, barking german shepherds when we wer small children. They were my Grandma's neighbor's dogs. I had a slight fear from them, but we got a family dog when I was 8 and then my sister got a dog when we were adults and we fell in love with him and we have all been dog lovers ever since but somehow before too! Jack is the first dog that is actually mine if you can cal... Sun, 5 May 2013 21:42:44 EST SUNDAY'S WOOF!! May 5 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53230063 Sorry! I've been in a major depressive funk. Also, very busy wrapping up the semester, visiting my dad and loving on Jack!

Does your mutt have friends?

Jack has several neighborhood friends who used to come visit him thru the fence. Since he has been sick they don't seem to come around. One sniffed him on a walk and turned away. It broke my heart all over again! The one dog that Jack snubs still tries to get Jack's attention though! Jack has many more human fr... Sun, 5 May 2013 15:04:16 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! April 24 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53084957 We are taking Jack to the NC State Vetinary School tomorrow for more tests and hopefully some kind of treatment. He had a bad early morning, a pretty good rest of the day, then a bad evening. He fell and hit his head pretty hard on the coffee table, but seems OK now. Please keep him in your doggie prayers! I'll post when we know something. It may take 2 days for testing.

How does your mutt let you know he or she isn't feeling well?

Well, aside from Jack's unstea... Tue, 23 Apr 2013 20:55:55 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! April 17 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x53005916 Sorry. I get here when I can. Took a day off from visiting Dad and kinda sticking close to Jack because his balance seems worse to me.

What lengths would you go to in order to save your mutt? Any cost limits or distance limit?

Well, for us it was the distance. The only place the neurologist recommended was about 4 hours away and we simply can't make that kind of commute for radiation with my Dad needing us too. Where do we draw the line? But, we got an appointm... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 15:50:50 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! April 15 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52968496 Today is tax day! Wouldn't it be nice to claim our furbabies on our taxes? What costs the most for your mutts?

I guess medical bills overall, but we've spent a fortune in toys and treats too! Sun, 14 Apr 2013 21:39:30 EST FRIDAY'S FUSE!! April 12 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52931917 Does your mutt's overall behavior change with the seasons?

Jack spends more time outside when the weather is warm, but not hot. Last night he went out and slept on the stoop. He likes to lay in the sun if it is not too hot for him. He does seem to pep up a bit as warmer months come, but slows down in hot months. He definitely prefers fall. Thu, 11 Apr 2013 22:48:46 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! April 11 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52918422 Hi my mutt loving friends! Sorry for the extended absence. My life has been in turmoil. If you haven't read my blogs, my dad had a rather significant stroke on March 30. He has been hospitalized and now is in a rehab center. He is paralyzed on his left side and has some other issues going on. I try to visit daily and don't always have time for SP. During the week after his stroke we also learned that our beloved Jack has brain cancer. He has 3 tumors and the largest is on his brain st... Please read her blogs and send out love and emotional support for her.

The question: What were some strategies you used to cope with loss and decline of loved one, both human and furred.

When Sarah was 17, I wrapped her in a blanket and carried her on on our walks with Doogie. She loved getting out even though she could only walk a few paces. Doogie just loved having me lay beside hi... Fri, 5 Apr 2013 12:51:13 EST April Chit Chat Cafe http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52775994 Morning Group -- It is raining in our part of the world. Wish we could send some rain to Texas, Mary Alice. Had plans to get out in the yard and get some work done, but will have to wait until the clouds go away. This week is Easter break for the school children in our area. They probably had outdoor plans, also. Jeffery wasn't too happy about the thunder that came with the rain -- he was up early trying to tell me something was going on. He wants to go for a walk, but that will have to... Can't believe we are at the end of another month! Hopefully warm weather is in store!

I ask this question alot... But, my anser can change daily and I'm sure yours can too! What is that one thing that just makes you want to squeeze your mutt outta love?

This evening Jack was on his chair and I was laying on the couch with my feet up on hubby to warm them.... Jack would jump down and look at us, jump back on his chair, jump do... Fri, 29 Mar 2013 23:02:06 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! March 29 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52734474 I'm posting Friday's woof early tonight.... Big day ahead for me tomorrow.

So, I'm serious.... Do you believe dogs have souls and that those souls go to Heaven?

I know what the Bible supposedly says according to my in-laws, but I've looked into a dog's eyes and I believe they have souls and those souls are purer than any human soul. I believe that they go to the same Heaven we do and we will all be reunited with our dogs as we will with our loved ones. This I bel... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 20:10:57 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! March 28 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52722412 What signs of aging (if any) is your mutt exhibiting?

All of Jack's once black fur is now grey. He has an old man's face! He also suppposedly has this "Old Dog Vestibular Disorder". but, he has no signs of arthritis or anything yet. Wed, 27 Mar 2013 22:34:07 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! March 27 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52712091 Do you fix an Easter (Passover) basket or treat for your mutt? What do you put in it?

No basket really, but I usually get him an Easter themed toy to destroy and some of his favorite treats or chews. My mom always would fix him a basket with an egg with his name on it (died egg) and some treats. Wed, 27 Mar 2013 08:18:13 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! March 26 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52693582 What kind of sacrifices have you made for your mutt(s)?

The only sacrifice I've made is a fur free home and complete peace of mind.... I worry about him as if he were my child and essentially he is my child. I don't consider anything a real sacrifice b/c I can't imagine my life without him or another dog in it! Mon, 25 Mar 2013 22:24:03 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! March 25 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52678488 Do you give your mutt vitamins? March 23-24 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52663470 How is your mutt about posing for photos? Does he or she like to sit pretty for pics?

Jakc's a regular ham. He likes to pose for pics. Poor baby can't even sit right now without falling over. He still tries to maintain that regal posture even as he falls sideways! Sat, 23 Mar 2013 19:32:28 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! March 22 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52640142 Well, even if we did have a dirty rotten lying groundhog this year, the calendar says it is spring and that usually means shedding season! Does your mutt shed? If so, how do you handle it?

Jack has 2 shedding seasons that last 6 months each! He sheds like nobody's business! I accept that no outfit is complete without dog hair. We brush him often and use the Furminater on him which does work well, but we could use it all day and he would still shed! Someone told me you coul... Thu, 21 Mar 2013 22:27:37 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! March 21 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52625472 Happy Supposed Spring! Wed. was nice, but we are supposed to get snow on Sunday.

Is your mutt within his or her recommended weight limits? What are you doing to change it if not?

Jack is a healthy weight. He always looks bigger in winter and even gains a bit of weight, but since he has been full grown he has maintained a weight of 67 to 70 pounds. The vet has always been happy with his weight. Wed, 20 Mar 2013 22:09:16 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! March 20 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52611266 Wed. is a very busy day for me... Dentist, doctor and workout! Jack goes for a follow up on Friday. He seems to be feeling better. He actually wanted to play twice today and once yesterday. He's still stumbling though. Poor baby!

Has your mutt ever had any kind of "intrusive" medical procedure? I.e. surgery, teeth cleaning requiring anesthetia, tooth removal, Zrays

Jack has not, but if his condition does not clear up he will need X-rays of his neck. He did hav... March 18 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52580399 It has been said that the one thing that distinguishes humans from dogs is our lack of fear of the vacuum cleaner.... What is one thing your mutt absolutely hates and will run and hide from?

Jack is one who does not like the vacuum, but neither do I... But, he runs away from it as if it might eat him. He also runs away from anything on a long handle like a broom, a rake, a hoe.... He also runs away and tries to hide from his ear drops! He hates the weed eater too, but tries ... Sun, 17 Mar 2013 22:53:39 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! March 16-17 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52553912 Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend!

Cathy-- Thanks for all the info about Old Dog Vestibular Disorder. Hope your bite heals quickly. Did the ER ask about Rocko?

Hope everyone has a great weekend with your mutts!

Is your mutt a digger or a burier? Does he or she have a place they prefer to dig or bury stuff?

I guess Jack is lazy overall and likes to dig and bury in the mulch, not the dirt. Ocasionally after a rain when the ground is softer h... Fri, 15 Mar 2013 23:19:17 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! March 15 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52539245 Wow, time is flying for me! How about you?

Does your mutt have a hiding place where she or he goes to avoid you for whatever reason? Where is it?

Jack doesn't like his ear drops. If he can he will run outside, but like a 2 year old child he will hide behind me or behind the office chair the whole time with that tail sticking out and waving! He thinks I will protect him and honestly I feel bad letting it happen! He has me so trained to feel sorry for him! Thu, 14 Mar 2013 22:45:48 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! March 14 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52524051 Has your mutt ever snapped at or bitten anyone?

When Jack was a puppy he snapped at and bit the ankle of one of the guys installing our new windoes. Didn't think much of it at the time except puppy enthusiasm, but he has only reacted negatively to about 4 people and obviously something was off about them. We took him out before he could actually bite. He is a very friendly and loving dog and that was the only bite he ever gave. But, I don't know with those people he doesn't l... Wed, 13 Mar 2013 22:49:03 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! March 13 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52509308 Some experts dog's don't have the capacity to lie or deceive.... So, today's question is do you believe dogs can and do lie and has your mutt ever lied to you?

Oh yes! Before we left for our trip jack was actually doing this fake cough thing. Just like a little kid faking illness to keep Mommy and Daddy home. The babysitter said he never coughed again the whole time she was here. So, Anthony thinks he is faking this occasional stumbling to punish us for leaving him. Also, ... Tue, 12 Mar 2013 23:33:08 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! March 12 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52493519 OK, you all know my tendancy to catastrophize, but I'm worried. Jack has been stumbling a bit and tonight he was walking like he was drunk. I'm calling the vet in the AM. I'm so scared. I've lost so much in my life and Jack was given to me to help with those losses. His stumbling scares me. So, the question is what has your mutt ever done that really scared you?

Besides this stumbling bit he has going on he has run out of the house and straight into the road a few times whe... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 22:55:01 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! March 11 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52477786 So, what is your most recent favorite book about dogs that you have read?

I like books that are "written" from a dog's point of view like my fave.... The Art of Racing In The Rain. But, my friend bought me a couple new books for Christmas and I downloaded them to read while on vacation and loved them! They are part of the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series. Chet is a dog and they have a private eye business. Chet does so much like Jack that it made me miss Jack more on my vacation... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 23:23:17 EST SUNDAY'S WOOF!! March 10 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52471420 Hi! I'm back! I really missed Sparking! Had a great trip, but good to be home! Missed my Jack too! So, today's question, how does your mutt react to you being gone for awhile?

Jack suffers separation anxiety, so any time we come home is a celebration! But, after a long absence like this past week he will turn his butt toward us and pout a little but that is after a great many kisses. Then he snuggles up with us so he can touch both of us. He rested completely and we al... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 14:55:50 EST Thursday Woof, March 7 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52428503 I am missing Melissa. Hope she is having a lovely time.

So, last night, I got sick (suspect food poisoning) and Buddy curled up next to the back of my neck. I woke with no jaw pain, vertigo or tightness in my neck and shoulders this morning despite my tummy troubles which should have had me grinding teeth and in a knot. He has never slept there before. It is like he knows what hurts. He is my own personal nurse.

I am going to keep the question broad. What has your ... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 12:15:07 EST March Chit Chat Cafe http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52345704 Hello again! I volunteered to teach a weight reduction class at the clinic. Besides all the wonderful information that is available on SparkPeople, do any of you use a certain program or book to get started on reducing? So many of our patients at the clinic have diabetes and heart problems -- being on an American Diabetes Assn. diet is very healthy. Due to the need to have simple "carbs", it is easy to follow the listings and try to avoid sugars and fats. It was the diet I used in high s... Fri, 1 Mar 2013 20:08:02 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! March 1-3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52332176 I'm off to cruise several countries including MaryAlice's Belize! (sp?) I'll be gone a week. You all can post questions or maybe Lennie will. Anyhow, here is the question for the weekend:

Does your mutt react to suitcases?

Jack has separation anxiety and he gets very nervous around suitcases and it is difficlut to calm him. At least he has a babysitter he loves this time! Thu, 28 Feb 2013 22:26:24 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! February 27 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52302159 Loved the images your calendar dogs brought to mind! Thanks!

So, we were somewhere and my husband had a cookie and said he was going to enjoy it without doggie eyes watching every bite.... Made me wonder.... Do you miss your mutts when you are away from them, or do you consider it a little break?

I miss Jack. I often find myself thinking about him when I'm not with him. I do enjoy an occasional bite with no doggie eyes, but I miss having him watch me eat! I usu... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 23:21:35 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! February 26 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52286477 If your mutt was featured for 1 month in a doggie pin-up calndare, on which month should he or she be featured and why?

I would say October. He seems to love the cooler temps, but it is not so cold he can't go out and lay in the sun. He seems to thrive in fall. Mon, 25 Feb 2013 23:05:18 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! February 25 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52269726 Just a reminder... I'm leaving for a cruise on March 1, so I won't be posting. Anyone can step in and do the Daily Woof, but ask Lennie to make it a sticky if you wish!

On the doggie police force, what position would your mutt hold? Chief, sitting back and making sure everyone follows his or her orders; Beat Cop, walking his beat and protecting the neighborhood; Detective, figuring it all out and using intuition and senses, Deputy, loyal sidekick to the chief who helps out at ... February 23-24 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52248477 What behaviors confirm to you how smart your mutt(s) really is/are?

Well, last night I told Jack to go get his dragon and he kept sniffing the bottom of the closet door. I couldn't figure it out, so i opened the closet door and there was Dragon! Evidently I kicked Dragon in when I hung up my coat! Somehow Jack knew where he was. Maybe by smell, maybe he saw me do it, but he not only understood the word "Dragon" being that he had several other toys lying around, but he knew wh... Sat, 23 Feb 2013 11:38:31 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! February 22 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52228552 What behaviors would you like to see your mutt(s) do more AND less of?

I'd like to see Jack do more obeying commands and yes, I know I need to work on that one, and less barking at night! Thu, 21 Feb 2013 22:24:55 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! February 21 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52214463 I almost typed December in for the date! Whew!

There have been several break ins around here when people are at work. Would your mutt(s) protect your house if someone broke in?

Jack would make a good show of it. He looks and sounds vicious when he doesn't recognize someone, but if they entered I'm not sure what he would do. He's been aggressive in protecting me a couple times where I had to put him in a separate room, but I trusted his instincts. I just sometime... Wed, 20 Feb 2013 22:57:29 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! February 20 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52199061 What are your thoughts on "debarking" dogs (removing or cutting vocal chords)? What about shock collars to control barking?

I'm against anything that takes away from what dogs do with the exception of "fixing" them to prevent pet over population. I am totally against debarking. Dogs bark for a reason most of of the time and I feel there are humane ways to control it. That being said I am totally against shock collars for any reason, even to keep dogs behind an electric fence.... Tue, 19 Feb 2013 22:25:19 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! February 19 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x52184592 What stuff does your mutt bark at?

A better question for us is what doesn't he bark at?! He's out there barking at whatever animals are night running in the back field right now. He barks at cars and trucks pulling into our driveway and the neighbors'. He barks at the neighbors to welcome them home. He barks at the word "somebody". He barks at alot and we've had a real problem training him not to bark. We need the dog whisperer around here! I'm just a mess these days.

How does your mutt remind you to live life to its fullest?

Well, he exhibits sheer joy at us ocming home and a bit of cheese! He reminds me that love and good food is something to be thankful for. I just love reading your responses to these questions each day! How can we not love our precious mutts? So, thanks!

This question is a bit difficult. But, after my sister died it made me think... Do you have assigned guardians for your mutts should something happen to you?

We do. Right now my dad is our assigned guardian if something should happen to both of us. But, if Dad goes before we do, then we will have Jack... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 08:21:59 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! We are all very lucky to have our mutts in our lives for sure! So, do you "exchange" valentines with your mutt(s)?

Oh yeah! He gets a special cookie and a valentine themed toy he can rip apart and he "gives" me and my hubby both cards signed licks, nibbles & love! Found a really cute one for Hubby from Jack this year. We're not at all. It was like spring here today.

Does your mutt have an expressive face? Give an example.

Oh yes! Jack has one of the most expressive faces on a dog that I ever heard of! He looks up from his downcast eyes and lets us know he doesn't want us to leave him alone. He looks up with those eyes, along with a chin on your leg, to say he wants food or attention. He grins... Fri, 8 Feb 2013 23:03:07 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! Then, he had quite a few toys out on the floor in various places, but then had to dig to the bottom of his toybox to find his old, decrepit, shell of a dragon and wanted to play with it. He kpet lifting his eyebrows at my husband like c'mon, wanna play? Thu, 7 Feb 2013 21:57:23 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! I'd also bet that that it is the love that surrounds him in this house! Wed, 6 Feb 2013 22:42:45 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! Did they attend to you or not?

When Jack was a puppy I started holding him on my lap and telling him the story of the 3 Little Pigs and his big, bad cousin the wolf. If so, which ones?

No. Jack rarely pays any attention to TV. Theonly thing on TV that captures his attention is occasionally a doorbell ringing or the sound, the beep beep sound, of a truck backing up. If those sounds are on TV he will react, but still not really pay attention to the TV. Mon, 4 Feb 2013 21:29:42 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! He barked like crazy all day. I don't know if it is the sound or the flashing lights, but he didn't like it. He also doesn't like that loud stereo sound that thumps, thumps, thumps. December 4 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x51076335 Would you consider your mutt an intravert (quiet, a bit shy, prefers alone time) or an extravert (outgoing, talkative, sociable)? What about you; are you like your mutt or the opposite?

I think Jack is more intraverted. While he has been talkative lately, he still tends to keep to himself around other dogs. He is more extraverted with humans. I am an extravert with canines and humans alike! I've never met a stranger! Could you tell? HeeHee. Mon, 3 Dec 2012 22:43:09 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! December 3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x51060392 If Santa kept an eye on mutts, what would get your mutt on santa's naughty list?

Jack's barking! It has put him on my naughty list lately! He goes out back at night, right at nightfall, and starts barking non-stop. It seems to be some kind of doggie chat thread b/c they are all barking all over the countryside! He will not be quiet or come in when called. It is bothering me, so it has to be bothering my neighbors! He has also taken to pulling up the couch cover and snugglin... First, do you decorate for Christmas or any of the December holidays? And, percentage wise how many of your decorations are dog related?

I do decorate for Christmas. Overall, only about 10 to 15% ar somehow dog related and mostly have to do with pictures of jack with Santa. My tree ornaments are probly more like 59 to 60% dog related from bones to puppies to the PetSmart annuals. So, that is how I come t... Fri, 30 Nov 2012 23:53:59 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! November 30 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x51021133 Wow, last day of November! Time sure does fly for me! I feel like I may be living in "dog years"!

Have you or your mutt ever had food poisoning?

I have, for all I know Jack hasn't. He has however had bad tummy reactions to hot dogs, corn cob (enough to make anyone puke I think) ((he got it out of something when a puppy)). It was bad for me and Jack being sick was bad for me too! Hee. Thu, 29 Nov 2012 22:03:08 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! November 28 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50995398 Have you ever had a professional portrait taken of your mutt(s)?

Oh yes. A few years ago a local photography studio would give you a free 5 X 7 portrait if you brought pet food in at Christmas. They have since gone out of business, but I have had Jack's picture taken twice and he was in our recent family portrait with my parents. He actually is very good at posing. We are expecting a cold rain today (Tuesday). Have you gotten snow where you live yet and does your mutt like to play in the snow?

Jack is not real interested in the snow. He will chase a snowball and then look at us like we tried to fool him when he can't find it. Snow is so abnormal for us though. I wish I had gotten a pic of him right after we first got him and he was sort of rooting in the snow and came up with about an inch of snow on his swee... Does he or she follow you to the bathroom and/or wait for you in front of the door?

Yes! jack has taken to following me in and enjoying a scratch while I am on the potty! He has always followed my husband in or has waited right at the door for him to come out. Mon, 26 Nov 2012 13:46:18 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! The other contest he could win is a cheese eating contest. When he has been totally involved with something, like trapping the skunk behind the bush and ignoring me, all I have to do is rattle a cheese pack and he comes running! But, I also never met a dog who needed... Sat, 24 Nov 2012 00:29:25 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! Do you ever take your mutt shopping at the pet stores?

I do not go out on Black Friday! I don't like crazy crowds. There is nothing, nothing, nothing I want to buy at 3 or 4 or even 6 in the morning! Now, you will most probably find me online on Syber Monday! I do take Jack to PetSmart occasionally. He is pretty good. Very much not like a toddler as usual. He doesn't cry for toys ... Thu, 22 Nov 2012 23:22:20 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! November 20 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50897682 So, I have a dentist appointment bright & early in the morning. This makes me wonder.... How do you care for your mutts' teeth?

I bought little finger brushes and doggie toothpaste when he was young, but that didn't last. He has amazingly white teeth for his age. He gets rawhide treats and his favorite Dentastix and both seem to work. Mon, 19 Nov 2012 23:03:22 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! November 19 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50882428 How does your mutt approach food? Does he or she gobble it down until the last morsel, or does he or she take the time to enjoy it?

Well, Jack always seems as if his last meal was forever ago! He acts like he is starving, but only when it comes to people food. His food sits in his bowl all day and he will go nibble when nervous or when the mood strikes. But, he acts as if he never ate when people food is around! But, he will not take anything unless offered to him. Sun, 18 Nov 2012 21:33:38 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! What are your plans for the Thanksgiving Holiday? Are you eating at home, someone else's home, out? Do you have a healthy eating plan in place? Will your mutt(s) get any turkey?

I am cooking dinner here so to speak. It seems my MIL isn't going to let me cook. She is sick and that is one reason I'm having it here, but she still insists on doing alot of cooking... Fri, 16 Nov 2012 22:05:38 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! What is your prime time, when you are most productive, etc. and when is your mutt's prime time?

Mine is actualy evening to night.... I do best late in the day and I think it is the same for Jack. He revs up in the early evening, but his prime time is much shorter than mine! Thu, 15 Nov 2012 22:43:17 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! November 15 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50832721 Does your mutt ever have bouts of uncontrolled barking? What do you do?

Yes. Especially in these cool evening when the deer and other animals are running Jack goes out back and barks and barks and barks! I call him in and try to distract him, but that usually doesn't last long! Wed, 14 Nov 2012 23:12:33 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! Is he or she upset about the vet or is it a friendly visit for him or her?

Jack loves going to the vet! From his first visit we always called it "going to see his girlfreiends" b/c all the assistants are women who make all over him and talk sweet to him and scratch him, etc. He goes once a month for grooming which includes his nail trims and he goes annually every December. We also wil take him if something seems ... Sun, 11 Nov 2012 21:09:24 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! November 10-11 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50764688 Cathy brought this up in Friday's Woof.... If you were to build your perfect mutt what would he or she be like?

I like the idea of the 15 to 25 pounder so he could be carried if need be.... Yes, I did say he. I am partial to male dogs with no good reason. I don't have a preference for a look or a mix b/c mutts are so unique. But, I would prefer one who didn't shed as much as Jack sheds! Don't get me wrong.... I love my Jack, but he is a mess! My neighbor's dog is a beagle... Fri, 9 Nov 2012 23:21:14 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! November 9 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50750371 I know we are mutt people around here, but I wonder..... Is there any breed of dog you would not bring into your family?

Yes. An English Sheepdog! While when they are clean they are just darling, but when they are not.... Ick! They also seem to be alot of work to keep clean. I'd probably avoid pure bred great danes and dobermans too due to size. We just couldn't house dogs of that size, any dogs of that size. Do you get your mutts flu shots? Do you get a flu shot? Did you get one?

I never even heard about canine flu until Kitty posted about it. I checked with Jack's vet and he doesn't feel Jack needs a flu shot since he is mainly isolated and only socializes with the neighbor dogs. I don't know. I do get a flu shot and got one early this year. Hope I didnt' already ask this question! If so, sorry! Wed, 7 Nov 2012 23:10:41 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! Instead of me asking a question, I'm asking you to say something nice about the person who posted before you. If you don't "know" the person, then look up their Spark Page and see what they are about. We all need some TLC and a scratch on our heads now and again.... Here's our chance! I'll post after the last person posts. But, let me just say that I know each of you is a special person because you love a mutt or 2 or..... That makes you rem... This question doesn't have much to do with mutts directly, but it could. Do you vote? Did you vote today? Do you vote on every eligible topic, or just the "big" offices and such?

I vote. I voted this AM. I do vote for everything for which I am able. I take my right to vote very seriously. Many times people skip voting for amendments and propositions and those often have to do with animal rights, so I read each thing carefully, give it soli... What does she/he do when you try to leave?

A big yes about Jack! He leans across our legs, who ever he chooses that day and tries to block us from leaving. He has been known to sit on our feet, untie shoes and block doors! He always goes to his bowl nand eats too. He is an emotional eater! Poor baby. Sun, 4 Nov 2012 22:11:14 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! November 3-4 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50672277 So, I'm borrowing this question from Kitty again. This one made me think.

Do you have a plan for you and your mutt should you have to be locked down due to an emergency? Do you have an emergency kit, a place or plan for dog pottying, etc.?

I really do not. I honestly don't know what we would do for pottying if we couldn't get out. Jack will not go in the house! I've been thinking about it since Kitty asked, but still don't have a plan. When we get home from a long trip, it takes me about a week to recover, get unpacked, change gears, get adjusted to the time zone, plow through a ton of mail and bills, get the pets to keep following me around like a shadow, find all the things that we have misplaced, get reconnected to our life here. Melissa has been sending you some great questions -- don't think that the November site got set up for us to chat and catch-up and suggest ways ... Sat, 3 Nov 2012 12:15:25 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! Thanks Kitty!

If you and yur mutt had to appear on stage playing your complete opposites, how would y'all appear?

Jack & I would both appear energetic. Both of us tend to be a bit lazy. We would be energetic and athletic! I would also be very organized. Jack would not be hungry. Thu, 1 Nov 2012 22:13:17 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! What do you do about it?

Unfortunately, Jack does develop a doggie odor that is not pleasant after too long without a bath and if he has been outside barking alot. I call it his wild dog smell. We get him bathed regularly and just live with it. It is not as bad as other dogs I've been around and I guess there is no stopping it as one of the dogs was my sister's and he was clean, just smel... Wed, 31 Oct 2012 22:43:37 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! AS a puppy he chewed thru every material and leather leash we had, so chain it was and we have stuck with it! He is pretty powerful, so it works well. He gets very stressed out and at night paces and is very restless. He also is showing some bizarre behaviors, like opening and shutting our bedroom door, over and over again. I feel sad for him, but it's also irritating after a while and I'm definitely feeling the effects of sleep-deprivation from his behavior and it's even affecting my work. If we put him outside in his kennel a... Tue, 23 Oct 2012 12:43:23 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! October 20-21 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50466711 How often do you clip your mutt's nails? do you clip them yourself? Do you use some kind of special gadget?

I'd like to have Jack's trimmed every 2 weeks, but it seems to be once a month and his nails get ridiculous! He is a yard dog with not much concrete on which he can file them down! I take him to the vet for nail trims. He senses our nervousness and nearly broke my nose one time. We have never tried any of the nail trimming devices on the market. Fri, 19 Oct 2012 22:52:37 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! October 19 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50452221 A couple dogs have been running loose around here. We live in the county or a more rural setting, but on a busy road. There is no leash law in the county and that sucks. Jack has a fenced in backyard and he longs to run with the other dogs, but I assure him he has it much better and is loved much more. So, today's question is do you have a fenced yard for your mutts to run and play safely? If not, do they ever run free?

Jack has his fenced yard and it is a little less than a... Just not myself today!

Would you or have you ever considered medical insurance for your mutt(s)?

No. I would just find the money somehow if and when Jack needs it to be healthy and happy. I'd sell stuff if i have to in order to raise money to care for him if he ends up having expensive medical issues. Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:22:31 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! October 17 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50423051 Is your mutt frightened by any Halloween decor or masks or anything to do with Halloween?

As frightened as he is by most things, decorations dont' seem to scare him. He barks at trick or treaters as he would at any visitor, but he was a little weirded out by me in my moustache at my moustache party! He kept cocking that head and sniffing me to be sure I was who he thought.... He treated my mom with her moustache weirdly too! Tue, 16 Oct 2012 22:48:09 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! October 16 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50408772 How do your mutts help you relax at the end of a hectic day?

Many times Jack doesn't. He want to be scratched and petted and to play and it feels like more pressure, but.... He is easily persuaded to lie down and cuddle or to sit on my lap and allow me to stroke him and scratch him which totally calms me down! Mon, 15 Oct 2012 23:57:15 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! October 15 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50391385 What does your mutt do more of: play, sleep or follow you around?

Well, for Jack it is definitely not play, but there might be a tie b/t sleeping and following my husband around. He'll follow me, but if he is good and asleep he won't follow me. Sun, 14 Oct 2012 21:56:28 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! Anything?

Jack does not nor has he ever chased his tail. He does not chase cars b/c he doesn't have the opportunity to do so and in fact he really has no concept of cars and would get run over if we didn't keep tabs on him. We have a PO Box so no mailmen, etc. He doesn't chase delivery people, but he does bark ferociously at them. He will chase the lawn mower and the weed eater.... He really h... October 11 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50337385 How do you know when your mutt is sick?

Jack is not a very active dog, so if he isn't feeling well it is difficult to tell. But, he is more listless instead of lazy. I mean, he doesn't react to his squeaky toys, he doesn't run and dance to greet us, his tail wags only half heartedly. Thankfully he has only been sick a couple of times in his life. Wed, 10 Oct 2012 22:51:27 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! October 10 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50321739 As a child (or now) who was your doggie hero?

I'm a bit too young for Rin Tin tin or even Lassie really, so mine were cartoon heroes.... I loved Underdog! He was my absolute fave and then there was Scooby Doo! I think Jack is alot like Scooby. He is very nosey and loves to eat! Tue, 9 Oct 2012 22:52:21 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! October 9 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50313539 Sorry I'm late posting this. Experiencing a back ache and late getting to Spark and didn't want anything to do with the computer last night!

Does your mutt have a favorite toy? What is it?

Jack loves his cow and his dragon. They are those toys with multiple squeakers and he tears all the squeakers out, but then he carries the carcasses around all the time and even will sleep with one! We have several and we rotate the oldest and rattiest ones out ever so often, b... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 12:18:51 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! What time of the year does your mutt seem to thrive?

Fall is Jack's season. He loves the cooler temps and will stay out more lying in the sun or sniffing the perimeter of his yard. He will run and play for even more than 2 tosses of the ball for fetch! He dances, he smiles, he loves it! Summer is my season, fall is his and niether of us care for the dead of winter! October 6-7 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50268357 Do you and your mutt(s) gain weight in the winter?

It depends. I do with about 2 pounds or so, but last winter gained alot more due to an extended illness where I couldn't exercise. Jack looks like he gains alot, but it is an illusion. He has a double coat, so it fluffs up considerable and everyone says he is fat, but his actual weight stays the same! Sat, 6 Oct 2012 12:08:19 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! October 5 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50247345 People are paying alot of money these days for mutts.... Dogs they call "designer breeds". What would be your mutt's designer breed? I.e. Labradoodle, puggle, Golden Doodle....

Hmmm, Jack is a mutt born of mutts, so not sure. Maybe a Shephounddog? A German Hound? Not sure. He is my pure bred mutt and I like him like that! Thu, 4 Oct 2012 22:08:38 EST THURSDAY'S WOOF!! October 4 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50232689 What is the most impressive thing your mutt has done?

Well, bring me joy? Is that impressive enough? He has a rahter remarkable vocabulary reacting to such words as cheese, cookie, Janet, go, bed, somebody.... He also comes and gets us when it is bedtime. Oh, when he tricks me and pretends to sit since I can't see him... I find that trickery rather impressive! Wed, 3 Oct 2012 22:49:23 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! October 3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50216780 Would your mutt be able to survive in the wild?

Absolutely not! I don't know what Jack would do if there was no one to hand him his food in bite sized pieces or snuggle him or scratch him....I don't think he could fend for himself even if he had to! Was out of town and then playing catch up with work! Still not caught up BTW!

Say your mutt is a professional wrestler. What would his or her name be?

Jack.... Hmmm. He would be The Wagging Wonder..... Or the Fierce Face Licker! Both could wear you down eventually! He could make a run of being the Champion Cheese chomper too! Mon, 1 Oct 2012 23:55:40 EST October Chit Chat Cafe http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50189186 Morning group -- here is our site to talk and share for October. Hope Melissa is having a great time in the mountains. We will head for California on Wednesday. Looking forward to some cooler temperatures now that it is officially autumn. Went to a pet adopt-a-thon at PetSmart yesterday with the neighbor. There were about 25 cats/kittens, but only four dogs. One was a tiny Maltese mix that was found wandering around the streets -- it had a tail that was dyed blue. A few cats got adopte... Mon, 1 Oct 2012 11:31:12 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! September 26 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50109634 How old is old when it comes to a dog?

As with humans I think it depends on the body and not the number of years.... An old dog is one who can't walk or enjoy life any more. To many Jack at age 8 is considered old, but he still seems like a pup to me! Tue, 25 Sep 2012 22:54:46 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! September 25 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x50093997 We all do some ungodly things for our mutts.... what are some of the things you have done for your mutt that you never thought you would be doing?

Well, my friend was telling me about how her dog would lick her long, curly hair and ingest some which would lead to well, poop balls hanging from Honey's rear end and Pam would have to "wipe" the gog's butt. I knew if Anthony ever had to do that then Jack would have to go, but low and behold as a puppy he was evidently eating grass ... Mon, 24 Sep 2012 23:12:18 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! He hasn't been as destructive as he used to be, so hopefully the joy he demonstrated to us when we got home tonight will last! He's being a loveable snuggle puppy right now! If not, what do you do with them when you travel?

We don't. Jack is not happy in a car, so when we travel we get a baby sitter for him. Since my mom is so bad off my dad, who is our go to sitter, is not available so we actually have to pay someone this time. Mon, 17 Sep 2012 22:33:01 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! September 17 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49966060 As you all know, I am an avid belly dancer and I practice alot around the house.... Jack just lies there probably with that 1 eye open and pretty much ignores me. So, my question is will your mutt dance with you?

Ocasionally, but rarely, Jack will put his paws up on my shoulders and do a little dance with me. He also dances all by himself when we come home or when he really wants a toy or a treat! Sun, 16 Sep 2012 20:49:35 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! Feel better soon Kitty!

A recent Reader's Digest had an article about Dean Koontz and his dog, Trixie. If you haven't read his Trixie books, you should. They asked him to list his top 5 favorite books about dogs or with dogs in them and his first choice was one many of us read, The Art Of Racing In The rain. Does your mutt snore? Has he or she always, or is it a new thing?

Jack snores on occasion and I think it is allergy related. The poor boy has allergies bad. He sleeps deeply and when the allergies are kicking he will lay on his back and snore like a train! How did he or she become part of your family?

Jack was given to me when I made the statement that my childhood died after my brother died. My friend's brother gave him to her after her 17 year old shelty died and she wasn't ready for a new dog. So, he came to me and I can't be happier! It would've been my brother & sister's 44th birthday, but they both died in 2004 within 4 months of each other. Sometimes I still can't believe it. Anyhow, today's question.... What makes your mutt dance?

I have a dancing dog and he seems to dance only when he is happy! When is the best time (age) to have a dog "fixed" (spayed or neutered)? How old was your mutt when you had he or she "fixed"?

Hubby's boss's wife is having her puppy fixed and he is only 3 mos. old. That seems young to me. Jack was already 4 months old when we got him and the vet said it was time at 5 months, but I wonder if we weren't a little early since he does squat to pee. He gets along with other dogs OK, but the only cat he has ever seen has been thru a window. He growls at her and she growls at him, so.... He tries to keep all other anmals out of the yard, so I'd have to say no. Mon, 3 Sep 2012 23:44:06 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! Time is flying!

Has your mutt ever had any surgeries? If so, for what?

So far, the only surgery Jack has had was to fix him. I think that may have been too soon b/c now he squats to pee, but at least he has never humped! Wed, 22 Aug 2012 23:10:36 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! August 22 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49573100 When you have quality time with your mutt, what aare y'all doing?

I have to admit.... Quality time with Jack is lying on the bed with me scratching him from head to toe until we both drift off to dream land! He is a big ol' snuggler, so it is very special. If so, do you or your mutt take any medications to manage the pain?

I do. I don't know if it is considered chronic, but my leg that I broke will ache quite often and I do take pain meds on occasion when the pain is too much to bear. At this time it doesn't appear that Jack suffers any kind of pain.If he starts acting like he is pain I will have him assessed to see if medication would help or not. August 19 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49529153 We all love our dogs, but some things we jus wish we didn't have to do for them or with them.... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 15:08:38 EST Intro Post http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x2304x49518554 Hi! I'm Trish, mom to Nefer-A3 Ranger Danger Khasekhemwe, retired agility dog and BEST DOG EVER!!!! Called Ranger for short. The ridiculous name was for his agility card/awards. He looks like a border collie/GSD mix, but runs like a greyhound. go figure :) I'm really glad he suckered me into adopting him 7 and a half years ago, because he is just amazing! I can just LOOK at him and he knows what i want. I have pics of him on my page, along with my late, beloved Rottie. We have been through ... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 19:35:38 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! August 13 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49431527 Has your mutt ever brought you presents, like cats do?

Jack always brings stuff to me and drops it in my lap! He knows I can't see, so that gets my attention.... I'm waiting for a dead animal to end up in my lap one day! That is another reason I'm glad we have a fenced in yard, so nothing can get cornered and killed! He brought me his Kong treat ball that he had buried in the mulch and it was filled with slugs! Slugs are one of God's creatures that I cannot stand!! Ugh! Sun, 12 Aug 2012 23:28:06 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! They are spread out all over the house! Jack generally doesn't hide things, but they can be stuck down in cushions, in the bed and occasionally buried in the mulch! I guess the mulch is the strangest! Sat, 11 Aug 2012 11:19:32 EST FRIDAY'S WOOF!! How did you overcome your fear if you were?

Actually, I was. Lucille lived 3 houses down from my grandparents and she had 3 huge german shepherds that would occasionally escape from her blocked off back porch and corner me and my brother and sister on Grandma's porch! They seemed so huge and slobbering and vicious! I can't remember if their tails were wagging or anything, but we believed they would eat us up at the time! so, for a long time... There are 3 dogs up the road at the walking trail who are often not on leash or within a barrier and they have approached us and growled and barked, but their 'owner" has always called them off thus far. I carry bug spray on walks up there now to spray their eyes if they do try to attack! Mon, 6 Aug 2012 21:47:34 EST MONDAY'S WOOF!! August 6 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49323479 Wow. Time flies! I didn't stay gone as long as I thought. It was a great belly dance workshop, but boy did I miss my boys!! I was so envious when some of the local ladies said they had to go home at lunch to walk their dogs and feed them! As soon as I got home I got the full family reception complete with practially being tackled and covered in kisses!! We then snuggled on the bed for a short while. Love that dog! I guess, what celebrety is your dog most like?

Let's see.... Who is the most over-pampered, spoiled celeb out there? Maybe one of those Kardashians (sp?)?! I do like him so much more than I like any Kardashian though! Wed, 1 Aug 2012 23:42:47 EST August Chit Chat Cafe http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49252936 Well it is August and we switch gears now -- winding down summer-mode and concentrating on back-to-school. I stayed up late last night to watch the Olympics events -- our athletes are terrific and they worked so hard to get their medals! It is fun to watch the parents' reactions as their children perform. Keep posting, keep focused, keep taking care of those mutt buddies! Lets have a great month of walking, exercising, cutting back on calories!! Wed, 1 Aug 2012 07:36:48 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! I'll try to do it Friday before I leave, but may not be able to get to it! So, if any of you want to post the weekend woof Lennie can make it a sticky topic!

So, this question comes from something I just learned from Kitty (BIGPAWSUP).... Do you get your mutt's anal glands expressed or do it yourself? If so, how often?

I don't know! I didn't know it should be done ... Tue, 31 Jul 2012 22:52:56 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF!! July 31 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49234542 What is your mutt's favorite toy?

Jack likes squeaky toys so he can tear the squeakers out! But, he will carry the carcass around and sleep with it and want to play tug with it for a long time after.... Usually until he gets a new one to destroy! He's never had 1 favorite toy. July 30 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49214955 Some say that dogs are incapable of deceit, but I know differently.... How has your mutt "lied" to you?

Jack is a little sneak.... He knows I can't see, so when I tell him to sit he simply moves his back legs to make it sound like he is sitting. My husband has had to tell on him a couple of times and now Jack will move those back legs and then look to see if my husband will tell! It is crazy! Sun, 29 Jul 2012 21:13:25 EST SUNDAY'S WOOF!! My apologies!

What do you do about your mutt's shedding, or does yours not shed?

Mine sheds like crazy! Jack has a lump on him. I'm sure it is just one of those fatty cysts older dogs tend to get, but it worries me. I'll get it checked first thing next week. It doens't seem to hurt him and is not too big. How old is your mutt?

Jack will be 8 in September. He doesn't seem all that old to me and he is still energetic (to his own degree), feisty at times and fun loving. He doesn't appear to have any arthritis or joint pain, but a... Not sure this is a good question for Tazzy! heeHee!

My personal prime time is usually mid-morning to early afternoon. I'm not a morning person and I can't stay up but so late, so.... July 25 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49152389 I read recently that people often choose pets that they want to reflect how they (the human) wants to be seen by others.... What about your mutt do you hope reflects what you hope to portray to others?

Jack is so friendly and non-judgmental and open. I hope I am that way. I try to be.... July 24 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49133068 What is something your mutt does that is just sort of odd or peculiar or eccentric?

Hmmm.... Not sure. I think the most peculiar thing when compared to other dogs is that Jack doesn't have a "spot". He doesn't have that spot that makes his leg go when you scratch it..... He is needy. He needs to be touched and loved on alot. He doesn't like to ride in a car. I don't know. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know he is a dog! Tue, 24 Jul 2012 12:15:34 EST THE WEEKEND WOOF!! July 21-22 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49085774 What is something your mutt does that just makes you fall in love him or her all over again?

I don't know.... Jack does so many things that make me love him! The tail thumps when I talk to him.... The head on my chest or tummy when lying in bed.... The paw slap to remind me to pay him some attention.... The way he grins when we come home.... I'm sure there are alot more things I can't think of right now!! July 20 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49065101 Well, I could've sworn I posted a question for thursday, but guess not! My mind is slipping!

Do you use or have you ever used any kind of gadget on or with your mutt?

We use the Furminater, but never tried anything else. Don't like the electric fences b/c they don't keep other dogs or animals out and never tried any of those things to trim nails. Oh, as you all know we did try the Thunder shirt with no success! In fact he seemed to be petrified of the jacket itse... Thu, 19 Jul 2012 22:03:50 EST WEDNESDAY'S WOOF!! July 18 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49033835 Does your mutt do well with children?

Jack does. He is very calm and affectionate and doesn't snap if they pull his hair or tail or whatever. He's always been pretty good with children, but as a pup if they ran he chased and jumped at them. Now he loves to get petted and loves to give kisses! Tue, 17 Jul 2012 23:28:20 EST TUESDAY'S WOOF! July 17 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49028486 Have you ever taken your mutts to an obedience class? How did he/she do?

Well, we are doggie school dropouts! Jack actually did very well, but I caught the so called trainer beating one of her dogs with her leash and I quit. I reported her to parks & rec, but don't know whatever came of it. I wish we had enrolled in another class, but we never did. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Tue, 17 Jul 2012 16:40:09 EST MONDAY'S WOOF: July 16 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x49000928 I'm stealing this one from a member's blog.... What inspires you to lose weight and exercise regularly?

I'd like to say that Jack is my inspiration, but he's not. I do play with him daily, but would like to walk him more often, but can't on my own and my hubby works weird hours. My health or lack there of inspires me to try to eat healthy and since I don't always eat healthy that inspires me to exercise! Sun, 15 Jul 2012 23:05:31 EST The Weekend Woof!! The MOST? Do your mutts stay out of your way?

I like working my core the absolute least and probably b/c it needs the most work! I don't like crunches or any of the variations. I can't say I really like working any muscle group, but tend to do more on my upper body since I can do that sitting at the computer and... If we say her name he jumps up and runs to the door looking for her! I don't know what it is, but he goes nuts when she does come over and when he hears her name. He is partial to my husband over me when my husband is home and he is crazy about both of his grandpaps too! I was rather sick with a very high blood sugar and then it stormed again. It is pouring down rain right now. I know we need it, but ugh!

Jack kept us up all night last night with Thunderstorms. I went out and bought him a Thundershirt today and it doesn't seem to be working.... Flea control can be accomplished by washing your pet with a shampoo of chrysanthemum flowers -- the active ingredient, pyrethin, kills fleas but won't hurt your dog. You can make your own flea dip by using two cups of fresh rosemary leaves or peppermint leaves in 5 quarts of warm water -- steep the solution for 30 minutes. After the water cools, dip the pet in the mixture. Fi... Play safe today! Is your mutt afraid of fireworks?

Funny thing.... Jack's storm anxiety is steadily getting worse and worse, but tonight the nearby ballfield had fireworks and he stood at the door and listened and barked at them like he was mad, but didn't get scared as he did earlier with the storm. We've taken him with us in the past to see fireworks and he didn't get scared either. He was too busy wanting to kiss all the children! Not sure why th... Let us know how you are doing with your exercise program, diet changes, etc. Looks like our area is going to be warm for quite awhile. Sounds cool in Oregon and other areas along the West Coast. So many people without power due to storms and so much loss due to the forest fires. I am thankful that we still have electricity and that the fire danger has lessened due to the rainfall. Take care of those pooches and other pets! Sun, 1 Jul 2012 21:19:12 EST Question of the Weekend: June 30-July 1 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x48767289 It is really really hot here! What is your favorite way to keep YOU and/or your mutt(s) cool in the balring heat?

For me, I like to jump into the pool... Jack doesn't want any of that, so staying in the AC is best for him! I keep his water bowl full and put ice in it and visit him often in the indoors where the AC is as often as I can. Hubby did buy a fan for Jack for outdoors, but he still wants to be indoors which I feel is safest for him! He doesn't like the heat at all! Sat, 30 Jun 2012 21:58:39 EST Question of the Day: Friday, June 29 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x48740700 The heat is on! If your part of the world is as hot as mine & Jack's, please use extreme caution when walking your mutts, exercising or even just doing daily activities! Keep both of you (all of you) hydrated and cool as possible. If you stop sweatting seek shade/cool immediagely and drink water. Call for emergency help if you do not resume sweating or become dizzy or lightheaded. Keep track of how hard your mutt is panting and if where she or he are walking is not too hot on their paws!... He goes other places than the vet, so that is not the problem and actually he enjoys visiting the vet. We call it going to see his girlfriends, but he is not a good car rider like so many dogs! Wed, 27 Jun 2012 23:57:50 EST Question of the Day: Wednesday, June 27 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x48708888 Sorry for missing the post for Tuesday! It was a bad day for me!

Do you take your mutt(s) on vacation with you? If not, where do they stay?

I don't. Jack is not one for rides, so we get a babysitter/house sitter for him. I can't imagine him kenneled and stuck in a cage when he has so much freedom here. So, he stays at home with a babysitter! Have any of you watched that show on CBS about City Dogs or something like that? What did you think? And, did anyone see results from the Ugliest Dog Contest this year?

I didn't see either. I want to try and catch that Dogs in the City or whatever it is on Wed. night, but I keep forgetting about it and kinda also got sucked into the New Dallas! I always need ideas!

How has your mutt trained you?

I think the better question here is how hasn't he? I'm a big sucker for his doggies kisses and head on my lap or chest or butt or however I'm laying or sitting when he decides to be a cuddle puppy! Let's see, I head right to the bed for a cuddle session whenever we hear thund... Sun, 24 Jun 2012 21:10:54 EST Weekend Question: June 23-24 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x48648783 Around here we had a very mild winter and the bug population is supposed to be horrific this summer. They keep putting out alerts about ticks. What do you use to protect your mutt from fleas and ticks?

We use Frontline Plus and inspections. Jack had fleas as a baby, but he hasn't had them in a long while and so far (fingers crossed) no ticks. I hate to not post the questions, but life happens! Please, if you have any dog related questions I can post, Spark Mail them to me! I need some ideas!

If you had to describe your mutt in 1 word, what would that 1 word be?

This is tough.... Jack has some very distinctive personality traits, but they are sort of dependent on the situation. I'd have to say Needy. He wants attention and he wants it ALL the time! He has to be touching one... They are currently located in St. Louis, MO (I am in Ohio) and we have exhausted outlets there, so I am expanding my search. I am willing to transport within reason anywhere along the I-70 corridor between STL and Columbus, OH.

You can see pictures and find out more a... Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday.

Does your mutt's name fit him or her? If not, what should his or her name be?

Jack was named by my nephew and it is fitting enough, but had we waited to see his personality we should've named him Shadow b/c he follows us everywehre! He is lying right at my ofice doorway right now.... Another good name would've been Jethro b/c I think he would eat in his sleep if food was available! But, Shado... Jack is worn out from trying to avoid the little dog all weekend! He'll be glad to have me all to himself tomorrow.

What "bad" habits do you and your mutt share?

We both love to sleep and eat! We'd rather nap than take a walk in the hot sun, we both are anxiety eaters, we both will eat until stuffed if it tastes good! Yep. Sun, 17 Jun 2012 21:10:13 EST Question of the Weekend: June 16-17 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x48545035 Happy Father's Day Weekend to all daddies and dog daddies!

How does your dog get along with other dogs?

Jack is very arrogant. With many dogs he acts very aloof and sort of stands there with his head up and not looking at them. when he was younger he always tried to be alpha dog and would run like a lion and knock the other dog's legs out from under them like they were unfortunate antelopes! Now, he will either sniff a greeting, touch noses with those he deems wor... But, one that I really want to change and work every day on changing is Jack's habit of eating something right before he goes outside. He is a deep chested dog and I've always worried that he might have that stomach twisting issue like Marley had in Marley and Me. They say it is not good for a deep cheste... Augh! Life gets so busy sometimes!

How often do you bathe your mutt?

We try to stick to a schedule to give him a spa day every 3 weeks. We stopped bathing him since he has a multi-layer coat and stays wet for so long and hates a hair dryer. We send him to his girlfriends at the vet's office. The place that when scratched gets the leg pumping or the very best place (in your mutt's opinion) to be scratched?

Jack loves to have his inner thigh scratched. If you even brush his leg when he is laying on his side that leg flies open for a scratch. he doesn't have a sweet spot at all. But, today I was scratching his side and he started kicking that back leg! It doesn't happen often, it might have happened 4 times since we got him in Dec... He is a very friendly dog, but there have been 3 people who he didn't like and we had to take Jack out to protect those people. they were doing business and so they had to be in the house. I trust Jack's judgment better than I trust my own! Mon, 11 Jun 2012 22:12:31 EST Dog Dreams http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x48460106 From an article in the July/August issue of Discover Magazine: Dogs have the same brain structures that produce emotions in humans. They have the same hormones and undergo the same chemical changes that humans do during emotional states. Dogs even have the hormone "oxytocin", which in humans is involved with love and affection. The mind of a dog, however, is roughly equivalent to that of a human who is 2 to 2 1/2 years old. Therefore, a dog doesn't have all the range of emotions that hum... Including it in the weekend Q this time.... I am carrying on Kitty's tradition with this one.... He knows I am blind, so he just moves his back legs so it sounds like he is sitting! Then he looks at anyone who might be with me to see if they will tattle! Sometimes he will do something he is not allowed to do just to get our attention. He has also taken up waking us up in the middle of the night by pawing the handle on the bedside table drawer. He can get out on his own th... More on that in another question! He is a guard dog and scans his kingdome endlessly. I can tell if we know who is approaching the door by the way he barks. Strangers get a ferocious growl and mean bark while friends and family get barks of joy and then whining b/c they are taking too long to come in and pet him! He has a deep throa... Not sure if it is b/c it is cooler or he feels he has to be on guard! In fall he will lie outside some, more than in other seasons, but he is definitely an indoor dog! Jack will not stay in on hot days if we are all out at the pool, so hubby bought a fan to blow on him as he lays under the umbrellaed table. Not to mention that he has a live in babysitter while we are away, he has his own chair, he is loved on and scratched by all! Had a grand day with my 11 year old nephew!

Do your dogs swim?

Jack won't go near our pool. I'm thinking it is b/c it is a ladder entry and he is unsure how to get in or out. He has never been to a lake or beach, so don't know even if he could swim. He backs away from the pool if anyone makes a motion like they would put him in it! I really hope to get him up to the lake this year and see if he can swim. He doesn't mind if I am sick and want to lay in bed with him, but he is not really sympathetic or empathic. My sister's old dog, Bacchus, was the most loving dog in the world. He hated for you to cry and would likc the tears away. He would kiss you if sick or upset. He was very anxious and watchful when he heard sirens. However, there is a field out back from our house and deer and other animals roam out there and Jack barks at them until late! All I know to do is to bring him in and keep him in! It's gotten so that our neighbors fear something is wrong if they don't hear Jack barking at night! That's not good... Wed, 25 Apr 2012 22:45:01 EST Question of the Day: Wednesday, April 25 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x47748231 If you could create your own mutt, what breeds would you mix to create him or her, and which would you have, a him or a her?

I'd create a him.... I've always been partial to male dogs. I would want the loyalty, strength and personality of labs or retrievers, the anti-shed of a poodle, the size of a small retriever or collie, the temperment of a family German shepherd. No yipping, yaping or hyper dogs for me! I don't know what other breeds don't shed, but after Jack being the ... Terribly busy right now!

Have you ever had a bad experience with a vet?

Our vets are brothers that went to HS with my husband and we really like them. Jack likes them and they love Jack. Jack especially loves the gals who work there as receptionists and vet assistants. We've always been pleased with their care and their recommendations for Jack. So, Trixie refused to do #2 on their property. Does/Do your mutt(s) have a preferred bathroom?

Jack will go do his big business out behind the garage usually, but he is not against going in the yard, but usually along the fenceline. He does not like for anyone to watch him do his business! Busy time for me!

What are some of the nicknames you call your mutt(s)?

Jack has a bunch of nicknames! He has always been my Puppy Love and he responds to that! As a pup Jack ate the bottle of my tranquilizers, not any of the actual pills, but the bottle! He ate a pumice stone off the side of the tub and he ate a piece of my deck! I don't know how the boy survived this long! He outgrew all of that and only eats his food and mine now! Mon, 16 Apr 2012 23:02:38 EST Question of the Day: Monday, April 16 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x47611021 Don't you wish you could use your mutts as a tax deduction? I know I spend enough money on Jack that he should be considered! So, today's question.... do you do your own taxes or get them done by someone else?

Much of the time I work as an independent contracter so I get an accountant to be sure my taxes and eductions are all in order! But, stuff of mine.... HOw long do you have? As a puppy he would lay under the table and steadily chew on the chair rails. Hot sauce and anti-chewing liquid just seemed to flavor them for him. He chewed a cashmere sweater and selectively pulled out a... I try to never say the words "I never had...." It comes from me once saying I never broke a bone and then breaking 1 that next day and saying once I never had a stomach virus and coming down with 1 that night! If I do say "I never had" I will knock wood after! so, 2 superstitions wrapped up in 1 theme! Sorry I missed the question for the weekend.... Just busy!

I have painters coming for the next 3 days.... So, my question is: How does your mutt react to strangers?

Jack is a good judge of character. If he doesn't like you, then something is wrong. He is a very friendly dog, but very protective of me and when he doesn't like someone, then I take caution! He will bark and growl ferociously when someone comes to the ... Sun, 8 Apr 2012 23:11:18 EST THE MIXED MUTT LIBRARY http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x2304x47458223 This is a thread to post titles of books about dogs, or with dogs as a key character, or give tips for care of dogs. We can post titles and why we recommend the book and discuss any that we've read here!

I made a mistake in the QOTD, the book I suggested was Th The Art of Racing In The Rain and it is told from the point of view of the family dog! They truly are the best "breed" ever! And, Cathy, if Buddy is anything like Jakc then you are one lucky dog Mama!

How does your mutt treat squeaky toys?

Jack treats them like they are the supreme enemy! He gets them, rips them apart as quickly as possible, takes the squeaker out, chews it until it cannot be reassembled and then drops it on the floor! It dismays my friend who always gives him a toy when she gives me a ... Do you consider "designer dogs" like puggles and labadoodles, etc. to be mutts?
Somehow I don't. I think of mutts as sort of unknown heritage, or mixed heritage, and very unique when it all comes out! Share with us!

I know that that bowing down with their tail up in the air means they want to play. I know that ducking their head shows submission, but I kinda doubt that b/c Jack does not view me as a leader and he will duck his head to me... I think tail wagging generally means happiness. This is:

Where do you and your mutts like to walk?

Our road has no sidewalks and is too busy for walking, so we like to go to either of 2 walking trails....
