In what ways are you just like your mutt?

I guess I can be as needy as he is and I do love human touch.... We are definitely cuddlers. I can be loud when I want to get my point across too and I like to stop and smell the flowers along my walks!

Well, my floors would be polished and unscratched, the big chair would not look as if it was shedding, a couple of cashmere sweaters would not have had to been retired.... But, I wouldn't take clean, polished floors, hairless furniture or clothes, for Jack! He is my heart!

We are taking Jack to the NC State Vetinary School tomorrow for more tests and hopefully some kind of treatment. He had a bad early morning, a pretty good rest of the day, then a bad evening. Does your mutt's overall behavior change with the seasons?

Jack spends more time outside when the weather is warm, but not hot. Last night he went out and slept on the stoop. He likes to lay in the sun if it is not too hot for him. He does seem to pep up a bit as warmer months come, but slows down in hot months. He definitely prefers fall.

No basket really, but I usually get him an Easter themed toy to destroy and some of his favorite treats or chews. My mom always would fix him a basket with an egg with his name on it (died egg) and some treats.

Is your mutt within his or her recommended weight limits? What are you doing to change it if not?

Jack is a healthy weight. He always looks bigger in winter and even gains a bit of weight, but since he has been full grown he has maintained a weight of 67 to 70 pounds. The vet has always been happy with his weight.

What are your thoughts on "debarking" dogs (removing or cutting vocal chords)? What about shock collars to control barking?

I'm against anything that takes away from what dogs do with the exception of "fixing" them to prevent pet over population. I am totally against debarking. Dogs bark for a reason most of of the time and I feel there are humane ways to control it. That being said I am totally against shock collars for any reason, even to keep dogs behind an electric fence....

No. Jack rarely pays any attention to TV. Theonly thing on TV that captures his attention is occasionally a doorbell ringing or the sound, the beep beep sound, of a truck backing up. If those sounds are on TV he will react, but still not really pay attention to the TV.

Last night when I fed my girls - two beautiful 14 year old Aussie Shepherd/Catahoula mixes - my mom gave me some Chinese food to supplement their dinner. It was vegetable fried noodles. Has your mutt ever messed with your Christmas tree? Has he/she played with the ornaments, tried to climb it, tried to tinkle on it?

Well, Jack always seems as if his last meal was forever ago! He acts like he is starving, but only when it comes to people food. How often do you take your mutt to the vet and how does it go? Is he or she upset about the vet or is it a friendly visit for him or her?

Jack loves going to the vet! From his first visit we always called it "going to see his girlfreiends" b/c all the assistants are women who make all over him and talk sweet to him and scratch him, etc. He goes once a month for grooming which includes his nail trims and he goes annually every December. I like the idea of the 15 to 25 pounder so he could be carried if need be.... Yes, I did say he. I am partial to male dogs with no good reason. I don't have a preference for a look or a mix b/c mutts are so unique. But, I would prefer one who didn't shed as much as Jack sheds! Don't get me wrong.... I love my Jack, but he is a mess! I know we are mutt people around here, but I wonder..... Is there any breed of dog you would not bring into your family?

Yes. An English Sheepdog! While when they are clean they are just darling, but when they are not.... Ick! They also seem to be alot of work to keep clean. I'd probably avoid pure bred great danes and dobermans too due to size. We just couldn't house dogs of that size, any dogs of that size.

I never even heard about canine flu until Kitty posted about it. I checked with Jack's vet and he doesn't feel Jack needs a flu shot since he is mainly isolated and only socializes with the neighbor dogs. I don't know. Does your mutt have separation anxiety? What does she/he do when you try to leave?

A big yes about Jack! He leans across our legs, who ever he chooses that day and tries to block us from leaving. He has been known to sit on our feet, untie shoes and block doors! He always goes to his bowl nand eats too. He is an emotional eater! Poor baby.

Do you have a plan for you and your mutt should you have to be locked down due to an emergency? Do you have an emergency kit, a place or plan for dog pottying, etc.?

I really do not. I honestly don't know what we would do for pottying if we couldn't get out. Jack will not go in the house! I've been thinking about it since Kitty asked, but still don't have a plan.

Please forgive my absence. Been forgetful due to work overload and then spent the day in the doctor's office today.

What kind of leash do you use and do you use a collar or a harnass?

I've never taught Jack to heel, so we use a harnass for walks with a chain leash. AS a puppy he chewed thru every material and leather leash we had, so chain it was and we have stuck with it! He is pretty powerful, so it works well.

How often do you clip your mutt's nails? do you clip them yourself? Do you use some kind of special gadget?

I'd like to have Jack's trimmed every 2 weeks, but it seems to be once a month and his nails get ridiculous! He is a yard dog with not much concrete on which he can file them down! I take him to the vet for nail trims. He senses our nervousness and nearly broke my nose one time. We have never tried any of the nail trimming devices on the market.

A couple dogs have been running loose around here. We live in the county or a more rural setting, but on a busy road. There is no leash law in the county and that sucks. Is your mutt frightened by any Halloween decor or masks or anything to do with Halloween?

As frightened as he is by most things, decorations dont' seem to scare him. Many times Jack doesn't. He want to be scratched and petted and to play and it feels like more pressure, but.... He is easily persuaded to lie down and cuddle or to sit on my lap and allow me to stroke him and scratch him which totally calms me down!

Jack does not nor has he ever chased his tail. How do you know when your mutt is sick?

Jack is not a very active dog, so if he isn't feeling well it is difficult to tell. But, he is more listless instead of lazy. I mean, he doesn't react to his squeaky toys, he doesn't run and dance to greet us, his tail wags only half heartedly. Thankfully he has only been sick a couple of times in his life.

What is your mutt's season? What time of the year does your mutt seem to thrive?

Fall is Jack's season. He loves the cooler temps and will stay out more lying in the sun or sniffing the perimeter of his yard. He will run and play for even more than 2 tosses of the ball for fetch! It depends. I do with about 2 pounds or so, but last winter gained alot more due to an extended illness where I couldn't exercise. Jack looks like he gains alot, but it is an illusion. He has a double coat, so it fluffs up considerable and everyone says he is fat, but his actual weight stays the same!

How does/do your mutt(s) react when you return from a trip or from being gone longer than they think you should have been gone?

Well, for a long time Jack would destroy stuff if we went out of the house again and this worries me about having to leave for a meeting tomorrow.... Here's a just wondering question.... When is the best time (age) to have a dog "fixed" (spayed or neutered)? How old was your mutt when you had he or she "fixed"?

What kind of habits does your mutt have?

Jack has loads.... The whole thing about getting a new bone or rawhide and having to walk the entire house and go outside a few times is 1; eating before he can go outside (when he has no bone or rawhide); so many I'm not sure I can list them!

What have you been suckered into buying for your mutt from an infomercial or some other kind of ad? Did it work? Did it result from an infomercial or something like that?

The only thing I can think of was this spray for dog/pet odors. It was an infomercial a few years back and it swore it would just cleanse pet odors from furniture and any other thing.... It didn't. Do you or your mutt experience chronic pain? If so, do you or your mutt take any medications to manage the pain?

I do. I don't know if it is considered chronic, but my leg that I broke will ache quite often and I do take pain meds on occasion when the pain is too much to bear. At this time it doesn't appear that Jack suffers any kind of pain.If he starts acting like he is pain I will have him assessed to see if medication would help or not.

No. We've never travel very far at all with Jack. I can't stand the thought of him in a cold cargo compartment on a plane and there is no way he could pass as a guide dog!!

Do you contribute to any dog causes or charities?

I do our annual Mutt Strut with Jack to raise money for the local Humane Society, I visit the Animal Rescue Site and buy from them and I do donate food, toys and leashes to local animal hselters. Wish I had more time to donate my time to the shelters.

Has your mutt ever brought you presents, like cats do?

Jack always brings stuff to me and drops it in my lap! He knows I can't see, so that gets my attention.... I'm waiting for a dead animal to end up in my lap one day! That is another reason I'm glad we have a fenced in yard, so nothing can get cornered and killed! He brought me his Kong treat ball that he had buried in the mulch and it was filled with slugs! Have you ever been afraid of dogs? How did you overcome your fear if you were?

Actually, I was. Lucille lived 3 houses down from my grandparents and she had 3 huge german shepherds that would occasionally escape from her blocked off back porch and corner me and my brother and sister on Grandma's porch! Have you or your mutt ever been attacked by another dog?

Thankfully the anser is no for us! There are 3 dogs up the road at the walking trail who are often not on leash or within a barrier and they have approached us and growled and barked, but their 'owner" has always called them off thus far. I carry bug spray on walks up there now to spray their eyes if they do try to attack!

Wow. Time flies! I didn't stay gone as long as I thought. It was a great belly dance workshop, but boy did I miss my boys!! Well it is August and we switch gears now -- winding down summer-mode and concentrating on back-to-school. I stayed up late last night to watch the Olympics events -- our athletes are terrific and they worked so hard to get their medals! It is fun to watch the parents' reactions as their children perform. Hmmm.... Not sure. I think the most peculiar thing when compared to other dogs is that Jack doesn't have a "spot". He doesn't have that spot that makes his leg go when you scratch it..... Jack does. He is very calm and affectionate and doesn't snap if they pull his hair or tail or whatever. He's always been pretty good with children, but as a pup if they ran he chased and jumped at them. Now he loves to get petted and loves to give kisses!

Does your dog have a favorite human other than you?

Jack pretty much loves anyone and everyone, but he is just crazy for a friend of ours. If we say her name he jumps up and runs to the door looking for her! It is really really hot here! What is your favorite way to keep YOU and/or your mutt(s) cool in the balring heat?

For me, I like to jump into the pool... Jack doesn't want any of that, so staying in the AC is best for him! I keep his water bowl full and put ice in it and visit him often in the indoors where the AC is as often as I can. Hubby did buy a fan for Jack for outdoors, but he still wants to be indoors which I feel is safest for him! He doesn't like the heat at all!

Does your dog like to ride in the car?

Jack gets all excited about going somewhere, but once in the car he starts to get antsy and doesn't seem to like the ride. He goes other places than the vet, so that is not the problem and actually he enjoys visiting the vet. We call it going to see his girlfriends, but he is not a good car rider like so many dogs!

Around here we had a very mild winter and the bug population is supposed to be horrific this summer. They keep putting out alerts about ticks. What do you use to protect your mutt from fleas and ticks?

We use Frontline Plus and inspections. Jack had fleas as a baby, but he hasn't had them in a long while and so far (fingers crossed) no ticks.

Hello, all!
Please forgive me for jumping in here with a desperate plea.
I am in need of loving placements for 4 senior dogs - my father's, as he is terminally ill and will not be returning home to them. They are currently located in St. Louis, MO (I am in Ohio) and we have exhausted outlets there, so I am expanding my search. What is one behavior you wish you could change in your mutt?

Today is my husband's birthday and Jack is the only one to "buy" him a card so far! Augh! Life gets so busy sometimes!

We try to stick to a schedule to give him a spa day every 3 weeks. We stopped bathing him since he has a multi-layer coat and stays wet for so long and hates a hair dryer. We send him to his girlfriends at the vet's office.

Does your dog prefer to be indoors or outdoors?

During the day Jack prefers to be inside, but at night he likes to lay out on the deck. Not sure if it is b/c it is cooler or he feels he has to be on guard! In fall he will lie outside some, more than in other seasons, but he is definitely an indoor dog!

What is the 1 sure sign that your mutt is spoiled?

You won't believe this.... My husband bought Jack a fan to put out on the deck to blow on him while he lays under the table. Does your dog bark alot and what do you do to control it?

Jack barks way too much, but I am hesitant to stop it since it is our warning when someone he doesn't know comes to the house. How does (do) your mutt(s) greet visitors to your home?

Jack is an exuberant greeter! He barks madly and does jump up to give kisses! I wish we had taught him to not jump up, but we didn't and that is how he greets most. I swear if I had the chance to get my eyesight back for 10 seconds the one thing I would want to see is Jack grinning! He will grin sometimes when we come home and alot when we speak directly to him about almost any topic!
