SparkPeople Rookie Running Group Team Messageboard This is a group of people that enjoy to run, and are at various stages in their training programs. Come on in and join this VERY motivational, fun team!! SparkPeople Rookie Running Group Team Messageboard Hello! Just joined... Yay! I've been running almost two years, but I just recently started running outdoors. I would like to do it exclusively, but that would mean it would be early morning, very dark, and kind of scary (for me). Does anyone run in the dark? Do you have any tips? Mon, 28 Sep 2015 23:24:14 EST Sony Smart B-Trainer I have completed a few 5k races now. I have been proud just doing the distance, now I want to improve my speed. I am pretty new to running gadgets having used a FitBit One for 2 years and just purchasing my first smart phone 2 months ago. I have come across the Sony Smart B-Trainer via the ASICS website. I would love to hear from anyone who has used this gadget or has any valuable information about the Sony Smart B-Trainer. It is supposed to link up with the Smart B-Trainer app.
<... Thu, 24 Sep 2015 16:02:00 EST Maybe this isn't for me. I started a walk/jog program through a local running group in prep for a 5K I thought I would run in October. I have been doing this for about 12 weeks now at 2-3 times a week (mostly 2). I stretch before and after and I jog extremely slow. Some people walk faster than I jog, but my goal was to increase my distance I was able to jog and less walking and then down the road work on increasing speed. I had worked up approx. 3 mins run then walk approx. 1 minute intervals. About two weeks ag... Mon, 14 Sep 2015 11:50:24 EST Making progress Yesterday I did week 7 day 1 on my C25K. I got up this morning knowing that this morning would be an off day. It's been odd to not do my run this morning when I've done it every day since Monday. Thinking that tomorrow I'll do the next day of my run. Sat, 12 Sep 2015 21:24:38 EST How far can you go in an hour? My 5K training program is usually between 50 and 55 minutes each time. It's building me up to be able to run about 3 miles (5K, obvs) in that time frame. However, I know once I reach that and can do it consistently that I'm going to want to add distance. Without being a speed runner (alas, I'm built for comfort, not speed, and I don't expect that to change significantly once I hit goal weight), how far could I reasonably get in an hour? What's a decent expectation towards which to work? <... Thu, 10 Sep 2015 10:28:16 EST Every other run - is this normal? It seems like every other run is a good run, where I'm doing better and feeling it and it goes great. Then the ones in between are tough, it's like pulling teeth, my back hurts, I can't run nearly as much, etc.

I'm doing runs MoWeFr, strength training (mostly upper body, but also the lower body stuff that TXHRT4U recommended to help strengthen my running muscles) TuThSa, and Sunday is a day of rest. I don't think I'm overtraining - my runs are about 45 minutes to an hour, but e... Fri, 28 Aug 2015 22:10:11 EST What should I look for in running shoes I'm doing my Google homework and going to do the treadmill thing at Dick's Sporting Goods, but I thought I'd ask for opinions here. What sort of factors should I take into account when choosing running shoes? Typically when I walk my foot rolls to the outside - you can see on pairs of shoes I've worn for long periods of time that the outside of the shoe hangs over the sole.

I've seen a lot of different brands - Brooks comes highly recommended (by the sales people, so take that ... Sat, 15 Aug 2015 17:52:38 EST Making it a habit I have done C25K twice in the past 3 years - doing the Race for Life (UK) - and each time I've 'intended' to keep on running after the race - and each time the habit of running has fizzled out again.

I've read lots of articles and checked out different training plans etc - most of them led me back to Runners World.

The goal I settled on is from Runners World - aim for 30 mins at a slow pace (2mph); 2 miles non-stop; stay with that 3 or 4 days a week - this is enough to... Sat, 15 Aug 2015 03:57:55 EST How many miles I haven't run more than 10 miles a week for the last 6 weeks because of knee issues. I haven't had any issues with it for a little while now, I've just been nervous to do too much. Do you think I should follow the 10% increase rule to get my weekly mileage back up? The knee issues arose after I completed a marathon, took a week off and jumped back into training and upped my miles too quickly. The second week after the marathon I was comfortably able to do 20 miles, it was the following week a... Wed, 12 Aug 2015 16:40:22 EST Issues running/walking with my dog My dog *LOVES* going for walks, like, I walk near the leash and he starts bouncing. The issue is that he stops and smells everything. It feels like a constant fight to get him to keep up with me, which makes it hard to keep a steady pace. It's a little better when I'm running vs when I'm walking, but not much.

Does anyone else run/walk with their dog? Any tips? Wed, 12 Aug 2015 12:12:33 EST Hungry for Help ;) I run 3-5 miles a few times a week and do strength training. I did my first 10k ever back in May. I can run a 12 min mile, maybe even faster, but very conscious of not stressing joints or breaking something. I started fitness program (exercise/diet) to lose weight (lost 20 pounds) but that goal shifted to losing for health - I want to keep my blood pressure in check to avoid medications. I have the exercise piece nailed, at the moment. BUT I never got into the target BMI zone, I hover right a... Sun, 9 Aug 2015 10:55:43 EST Hi! Hi everyone, my name is Bonnie. I have been on Spark People (for the third and final time) for 14 months now and have lost 109 pounds so far.

Back in April I started a Couch to 5K program and got about three weeks into it before going on vacation, which I took a break from it since I was in a new area and didn't want added stressors to my exercise plan. I came back and my shoes started really wearing out on the insides. Due to that and choosing the wrong shoes when I finally got ne... Sat, 8 Aug 2015 22:06:50 EST I can't believe I'm running Hi! I'm newish to Spark and really new to running. I love the smartphone app Zombies, Run! It's designed for runners, but can totally be used for walkers. I figured I'd walk the whole series - I always used to joke that I would only run if *real* zombies were chasing me. :) However, their 5k app is set in between seasons 1 and 2, and they have several "race" episodes for 5K, 10K, and 20K. Since I am completely engrossed by the story I couldn't skip the "in between" stories, so I decided... Sat, 8 Aug 2015 21:12:23 EST 3 Day Streak! 104 I did 10 minutes two days ago at 3. I couldn't get the incline to work until afterwards. Yesterday I did 15 minutes, increasing my speed to 3.5 and raised my incline, but my calves were feeling like they were cramping, so I brought it down a bit. I also went for a walk with my husband last night, so I was able to increase my steps even more. Today I did 10 minutes with my speed at 3.5 and my incline raised again. My goal tomorrow is to run for 15 minutes, at 3.5 and keep... Fri, 7 Aug 2015 16:26:52 EST I'm not new to Sparkpeople... ...but I've been away too long and need to get on track. I used to run and cycle regularly, but a long run with pneumonia got me way off track. Now I tend to overthink before I do anything and end up not doing any exercise at all.

I went on the treadmill for 10 minutes this morning. It was an easy run, set on 3 with my track flat, but it was still more than what I've been doing, which is nothing. I do plan on gradually increasing my running, but I have to commit to it.
... Wed, 5 Aug 2015 12:42:34 EST Virtual Races? Have you/would you do a virtual race? After I got hooked on the "bling" from my first 5K I signed up for a couple more, but I also signed up for a virtual 5K so I could earn a particular medal I really liked. I found the virtual race to be disappointing at best; it felt pretty much like any other workout. I really missed the camaraderie of the real races.
Have you tried it? What's your opinion? Mon, 6 Jul 2015 16:51:33 EST Looking for people to talk running with My name is April and I'm from Cincinnati. I started running about a year and a half ago and I love it, but I only know one other person that runs. My husband doesn't get my obsession and I would love to have more people to talk about it with/ask questions etc. Would also be interested in friends on map my run. I currently run about 20 - 25 miles a week mostly all on my lunch break at work. Considering a half marathon, but my longest distance at this point is a little over 6 miles. Wed, 24 Jun 2015 08:05:57 EST C25K plus I finished SparkPeople's C25K-like program a couple weeks ago. I ran my 5K at the end of the ninth week of training. After those nine weeks of training I felt fatigued and not ready to settle into 2-3 miles runs or move forward into a 10K program. I needed a break but feared that if I stopped I wouldn't start again. My solution was to start over again with a different C25K using the easy first few weeks to decrease the intensity and then ease back to it. I'm in week 3 now feeling rested and f... Thu, 18 Jun 2015 10:03:16 EST Hi Hi, my name is Brian. I graduated from SparkPeople's 5K Your Way a couple weeks ago. Ran my 5K. I joined the team to stay connected with rookie runners I've met alone the way.
Wed, 17 Jun 2015 17:13:26 EST New to Running I'm just starting to run today actually. I'm going to be using a treadmill. How do you start? Is there a schedule that I follow when I run? Do I start by running a certain distance daily? Does anyone know which direction that can point me to? Thanks! 30 Thu, 11 Jun 2015 12:23:30 EST New Over 50's Grandma running :) Just joined this team this morning and must say I was impressed with the mult email responses. Great job with that. Made me feel very welcome! A little about me and my goals. I started weight loss and walking in January 2015. Could barely walk 1/2 mile. I am now down 33 lbs and just "Ran/Jogged" a 5K this past saturday. It was my 2nd 5K this year 1st one I walked. I did the spark people training to get to that running fitness level. I have had to go slower than I would have thought.... Mon, 1 Jun 2015 09:04:51 EST Want to keep running :) Hi, I've joined this team because I want to keep running. I did a C25K two years' ago - then sort of stopped running again! Got interested in Chi Running, Jeff Galloway, barefoot running.... but still didn't really get going. Have just recently come to the end of the 8-week Rookie Running Programme and have a 5k on 27th May. I really don't want to stop running after the race, but not sure how to motivate myself to keep going - need targets and goals maybe?

I'm 60 years old, norma... Fri, 22 May 2015 05:37:11 EST Heart rate too high--why worry? I know that based on the accepted formula my high heart rate for training should be around 150 (I'm almost 45) but it is CONSISTENTLY higher than that if I'm exerting anything resembling effort. I've been going to the gym and doing about half an hour of cardio per day, 4-5 days per week, for about a year and I'm now only about 20 pounds overweight, so I would call myself moderately fit. I've just recently started running, but my heart rate sits in the 180-200 range when I run even though I ... Mon, 11 May 2015 02:19:04 EST I guess I want to be a runner...Hello! I'm Tiffany in Phoenix and as I lost weight I decided to put a 5K on my bucket list. Not sure why, because I've never been a runner, but it seemed like something I wanted to prove to myself. Well, I got talked into signing up for a race we ran last month only to learn that it was the day after I'd promised my daughter we would do the Pride Walk/Run in support of a few of our gay friends in tough circumstances. So, we did a 3K walk on a Saturday (27:38) followed by my first 5K "run" on Sunday ... Mon, 11 May 2015 01:33:04 EST ankle pains Hi all-

I'm a very new runner and very overweight. I currently weigh about 260 lbs and would like to start running for fun and fitness. However, I have noticed that walking around, walking up and down stairs alone makes my ankles and knees hurt. Any suggestions to avoid these things as I don't want to give myself a "way out" of this activity.

Thank you,
Neela Thu, 16 Apr 2015 14:44:41 EST Excellent article for those who doubt

-you-from-the-front-of-the-pack-to-the
-back/

Loved reading through this. Sat, 11 Apr 2015 09:27:05 EST *wave* Helllo! Hi! I'm Andrea! I started running about 4 years ago and fell in love with it immediately. I don't know why I ever thought I'd hate it! I was interrupted from running when we discovered we were expecting our littlest mister - it was a high risk pregnancy, so I had to set running aside for awhile. Last year I found my groove again and this year I am working on running a 10K. I turn 40 next year, and I promised myself I would sign up for a half then. And then told my kids, so of course they are ... Tue, 31 Mar 2015 13:38:25 EST Hi there! Just wanted to introduce myself Hello all! 213

My name is Neela, I am currently 268 lbs and want to get into running. I am interested in the techniques you use to get started at a heavy weight. I want to run for fun, join the runs that are in my area, and get into shape.

Any advise that you will be able to offer will definitely be appreciated. Wish me luck! 224

Thanks,
Neela Wed, 25 Mar 2015 10:52:42 EST Hello I am 54 years old, and walk every where, I have never had a drivers license so walking has been my means to get from A to B. but it is becoming a bit mundane, and i want to shake it up a bit by starting to run. I am a bit scared of falling over when I run, but have started doing it in 1 minute cycles. I have three kids and two grandkids, am studying a Diploma in Business Administration and Advanced Diploma in Nutritional Medicine, keeping the mind active but I want my body to follow suite, an... Tue, 24 Mar 2015 14:36:41 EST Running v. Jogging? This is kind of tongue in cheek and kind of serious: I'm wondering how to define running versus jogging. Is it speed related? Is it a matter of consistency (i.e., how often you go out/week)? Is it miles covered? Are the expectations adjusted for age (I'm approaching 50 faster than I can run/jog!)?

I can go 2 miles without stopping to walk, so I like to think of it as running, but my pace is 13 mins/mile. Of course, I've only been training a couple of months, and getting my cardio t... Sat, 21 Mar 2015 15:50:45 EST are 5ks safe for couch potatoes? Hi,

I am considering signing up for a 5k race in exactly 8 weeks from today.

The thing is, I am a complete couch potato. I am very sedentary right now. I sit practically all day.

Is it unrealistic for me to attempt to do this 5k? The only reason I am considering it is to force myself to train for it and thus get more active.

Thanks for your feedback! Mon, 16 Mar 2015 15:57:57 EST Hello All Hi, I'm a 60 year old breast cancer survivor who is just beginning running. Have enjoyed running a couple 5K's. I found this article to be really inspiring, it's called 'If You Run Slow, Who Cares?' and I figured I'd pass it on :) the other day I was thinking about my own speeds and the pressure I feel to get faster SOONER so I could have the confidence to sign up for a race..... finding this article was well-timed.

"Here’s a secret about running. Tue, 6 Jan 2015 13:28:15 EST Long runs How much longer (miles or minutes) is your long run vs your regular runs? Tue, 6 Jan 2015 08:09:12 EST I'm Julie Hey, I'm Julie! Mother, wife, dog lover :D
I've been running a while. I have run two 5k in as many years. I'm hoping to up my speed and mileage. 10K here I come, lol! I just moved to Wisconsin a year ago. I'm not sure it's wise to run in 1* weather, hahaha! I haven't run in two months-I hate the cold and treadmills stir up my virtigo.
I'm trying to stay motivated :0) Thu, 1 Jan 2015 16:01:44 EST Need lower calf stretch! Help! Hi all, I've been running for about 2 years now, but was out of the habit for about 6 months before I got my treadmill. I was doing fine on the treadmill until I set the incline up (just to experiment) and now EVERY time I run I get a dull ache in the back of calves, above the ankle but below the "bulge" of the calf muscle.

I've tried stretching my calves with the exercises recommended on one of the articles here, but they don't seem to be doing much for the area where I'm having ... Tue, 30 Dec 2014 12:10:19 EST Did my 1st "hill day" today Or rather, "incline day" since I run on the treadmill. I did 3 (about 30 seconds each) at a 5% incline. My name is Carrie and I'm a runner! :) It makes me so happy to say that! Running has been a goal of mine for years and this year it became a reality. I started training in the spring to walk a half marathon in October. Along the way, walking got old, so I started run/walking during training. I ran my first 5k in July and have completed a few other 5ks since then. I completed my half marathon in October by run/walking it. I am currently working on buildin... Sat, 6 Dec 2014 07:40:01 EST we need a topic now? Okay how can you run in to a boat? they are not small and the ocean is a pretty big place seems like there would be plenty of room to maneuver. Then to think you can hit someone damage their property then just wave like an idiot and sail off. I am glad they caught him what a world class idiot.

Not much going on here. Trying to be more aware of what I am eating calorie wise but still just can't get going on the exercise. Thu, 4 Dec 2014 09:31:53 EST Running Alone Hello! Hi all, I'm new to jogging/running/wabbling! I did my first 5K on Thanksgiving day. Finished at 41:29. There were like 2,000 participants! I was trying to train with Sparks 5K training program but could only train sporadically because of work, school, family obligations, but I am very proud of my time, as there was time I was so de-conditioned, it would have taken me 90 minutes to walk a 5K! My next 5K is this month on the 27th! I hope I can improve my time! Mon, 1 Dec 2014 17:49:11 EST Hip Flexors Sore sore sore, all the time! Will it ever go away? I'm new to the team (actually was here before but am rejoining). It's funny, I've been running nearly 4 years, but I still feel like a novice. I've done a lot of 5Ks and keep plugging away at trying to run faster or longer, and then I'll have a setback and have to build up again.... so I never really feel like I'm GREAT at this running thing. But that's okay. I'm doing it mainly to keep the weight off and because it motivates me psychologically to prove to myself that I can achieve my... Thu, 6 Nov 2014 17:05:41 EST Starting over: cross-training through an injury. Hey, rookie runners! I have a questions that's tangentially related to running. I'm injured and being forced to cut mileage for at least a month. I want to take up swimming as a rehab/cross-training activity, but I'm so nervous! I'm not a very strong swimmer, and I don't have all the fancy gear, and I don't even really know how lap swim hours at the pool work. I've done 2 half marathons and I've got my 3rd in a few weeks. I run/walk for my long runs. I feel great up to about 10 miles, but then my calves cramp up and I have to walk most of the rest. It's both calves, they ball up and it's pretty sudden. The furthest I've made it without leg cramps is 11 miles. I've always got a hydration pack on long runs. I can't even tell you how much weight I have gained because I threw out my scale 6 years ago when I was rocking the program.
Today I did a walk/ wasn't pretty, but it did happen (4k in total). I had a difficult time even jogging 200 metres...ok, her... Tue, 8 Jul 2014 02:32:11 EST Heat it up Rookies - let's run through July! I really enjoy it, but I seem to always have something go wrong that hinders my progress. Illness, shin splints and now planter fasciitis. I am 40 and probably 85 pounds overweight. My foot is getting much better now and I am itching to get back at it, but nervous at the same time. I will probably be starting from square one all over again, as it has been 3 month since I jogged. I am saving my pennies for a pair a REAL running shoes p... Thu, 12 Jun 2014 14:17:13 EST Panicking! So ... my friend and I signed up for a half marathon about three months ago.

We were training REALLY well for the first two months - it was great! Two short runs and a long run per week, with cross-training in between.

Unfortunately, we're both teachers, so our standardized testing, end-of-year crazy murdered the progress we'd been making.

Well, Sunday is our half ... and it's a trail half that's considered "moderate difficulty." Sun, 25 May 2014 08:43:26 EST Running playlist Hi everyone. It's time to mix up the tunes in my playlist and thought I'd see what everyone is listening to. I know not everyone listens to music while running, but for those who do, what are your favorite motivational/workout songs?
One of my favorites is a cover of Stevie Wonder's Uptight by the Tedeschi Trucks band. It's a 15 minute track with a great cadence. When I first started running, I was amazed when I got to the point that I could run through the whole song :) Wed, 21 May 2014 00:12:03 EST Running again Hello Everyone! I am back to running more seriously after a long absence (not really sure how long!) and things are finally starting to click. When doing some goal setting recently I realized that I really do want to run a marathon someday. The longest race I have run ever was 4 miles about 20 years ago. I have my eye on a half marathon near the end of September.... We'll have to see how I do this summer. This looks like an active group so I thought I would join up to help my accountab... Tue, 13 May 2014 07:08:47 EST Hows it going? I'm new here! Good morning!
I joined the other day, but am just now getting to introduce myself.
I tried to start running last month but ended up pulling something in my ankle and had to give it a rest for a couple weeks. I had been using a couch to 5k app but it just pushed my weak ankle too hard. So i created a timer with longer walk time in between to let it rest. So far its working great! Just did my second run with it this morning and I feel fabulous! Had to cut it a little short because ... I'm registered for a 5k on Mother's Day and they offer a virtual race too. Distance options are 5k, 10k and 10 mile. Anyone interested? I joined awhile ago but haven't been too active here.

I started running last August or so, about 5 months into my weight loss journey...I have lost about 70 pounds in a year from April 28. First, it helped me quit smoking - YAY! I progressed from barely being able to run around the block to my 1st 5k (ever), then the 10k and was on my way to my first half marathon when I had some setbacks. I had surgery that prevented me from running that half, recovered and was back at it again. I fell this winter during a 5k and tore some tendons in my ankle. It's been about 10 weeks and the docto... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 22:48:09 EST Cold weather running Hi, I've been running for about 6 months now, and the cold is wreaking havoc on my endurance. I don't run really far or everyday, but over my weight loss journey I went from only walking (lost my first 25 lbs or so) to adding in a few mins of jogging to being able to run a full mile straight. I am currently running/walking 2 days a week with another 2 days of zumba classes for my weekly workouts. Thu, 22 Aug 2013 09:03:25 EST Seeking running buddy: Hyde Park, London UK Hi all. I am new to this team but not to SP. I have recently started a C25K programme with the intent to carry on through to being able to do about 8K three times/week.

At the moment I am running solo in Hyde Park as the days are still long but it would be nice to find a buddy to run with for safety and motivation as the daylight hours grow shorter. I would be happy to run in the early morning (6 or 7) or evenings after 6PM.

Let me know if you're interested. :) Sun, 18 Aug 2013 03:16:41 EST Anxiety about signing up for upcoming race I'm not really a rookie...I've ran my fair share of races, but I don't think it was completely on accident that I didn't make the cut-off to signing up for the local Half Marathon to get my name on my bib. I still have 6 weeks to train, but I'm suddenly in a panic about this race, and if I should do it!!

Last spring, I ran a half marathon, and it was HANDS DOWN the worst running experience I've ever had...and it was a RACE! I had a horrible experience with the heat, the race wasn... Thu, 15 Aug 2013 09:46:04 EST New to running... So, my family has convinced me to train for a half marathon (Disney princess 1/2 marathon in February 2014). I know, that's a big goal for someone with no running experience and quite a bit of weight to lose, but I thought why not? We are a... "fluffy" family, but my ~55 year old aunt (also with no running experience before training) ran her first last year, which convinced me that if I put my mind to it. Mon, 12 Aug 2013 23:15:31 EST Gotta bounce back! My name is Stephanie and I had lost 70 pound by combining a good diet with the Couch to 5k app. I completed the 9 week program and then some and had gotten to where I could jog a 5k. I had never been a runner before this and was feeling amazing. Then, around March or April this year, I stopped. I have gained 20 pounds back and am super out of shape again. I've got to get my weight back under control and down again. I once was just 20 pounds from my goal, now I'm 40 pounds from my goal. Wed, 7 Aug 2013 10:06:10 EST Hello! I just finished the Couch to 5k training program and was looking for a new group to join. I think this would be the place 213

I used to run when I was in my 30's, then a back injury ended my running. I finally found a doctor that got me back on course, and now after 11 years I'm running again. I just finished the 5k running program and I've got two 5k's under my belt. I'm still in the running/walking stage, I'm moving up slowly. I run for 8 minutes then walk for 1... Wed, 7 Aug 2013 09:28:49 EST Doctor says I can't run until further notice 39 I fear this may be the end of my training for the Chicago Marathon in October. I have a type of plantar fasciitis in the center of my arch which apparently is harder to heal. Yippee! I have exercises that I intend to do religiously, and an apparatus to stretch my calf/bottom of my foot twice a day for a half hour each time. I was optimistic when I left the Doctor's office this afternoon that it's possible to still do the Marathon, but 2-3 weeks without running. I am not to wal... Sun, 21 Jul 2013 20:26:18 EST Getting back in the groove Hi everyone!

Over 2 years ago, I did the couch to 5K program with much success and continued running for 18 months. About 6 months ago, I allowed some life events and other stress inducers to...well, stress me out. As a consequence, I gained back a great deal of weight and about 3 months ago stopped working out altogether. I'm repeating the C25K program, and working out 5-6 days a week. I'm hoping this team will help keep me motivated and give some good insights into running. ... How do I bust through my mental block? Tue, 11 Jun 2013 09:14:58 EST Hi Everyone! Just joined and excited to find this group! I joined a Boot Camp in January for 3 weeks after basically not exercising for years. I would exercise here and there, but nothing that would make a lasting impression on my body. Anyways, the Boot Camp obviously kicked my butt, however, I realized that despite not having a routine exercise regimen, eating like crap, and letting work/family take over my life, I was still pretty tough! I was amazed at what my body could do. After that, I started runn... Thu, 6 Jun 2013 22:53:05 EST Hamstring Question Hello! We love cheering each other on!

Mon, 18 Mar 2013 14:47:40 EST How do I find my race pace? I've been running for a few months now (finished C25K in August), and have run five 5ks and an 8k so far. My problem is that when I'm running a race, I seem to run at the same pace I do for my training runs. (I should note that I don't think I'm running too fast in training. When I run with a friend, we can carry on a conversation.) So, I guess I'm wondering if there's some magical way I can determine how much faster my race pace should be? If my training pace hovers right around a 10-minute ... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 13:59:36 EST Tailbone/back injury...when to head back out? About three weeks ago I fell very hard on my back and tailbone. I went and had xrays and thankfully there were no fractures. I was prescribed muscle relaxers as the Dr. said the muscles were likely spasming and causing the pain. I told the Dr. about my new found exercise (jogging) and asked about if/when I could head out again and how long this would take to heal. It was not my regular doctor and she wasn't super helpful, merely stated let my pain be my guide.

Since then the pa... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 09:19:42 EST Outside V's Inside I have been training for several months now for a 5K I am going to be doing in April. I am really excited and looking forward to doing my first 5K ever. Currently I am doing the 5K Runner app on my i phone, which has me walk/running for certain time frames. All of my training mostly so far have been done on an inside gym track and it has been working out good. But the weather is starting to warm up in my area so I have tried to do the training outside, but finding that I am getting frustrated... Tue, 12 Mar 2013 16:55:16 EST Building a Better Me Hi, all you wonderful Sparkpeeps! My name is Anna and although I am on a new "journey", I'm not entirely new to Sparkpeople. I have learned that each time I stray from this wonderful site, I stop holding myself accountable and the weight come back on. Actually, I have tried many other sites/programs and have not stuck to it or seen results like I have with Sparkpeople. I live in the wonderful state of CO and want to lose about 15 lbs. I love the outdoors, hiking, biking, running, photogr... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 17:02:34 EST Does this sound reasonable? I'm not new to running, but I haven't been any good at it or ever kept at it for very long since I was in high school, which was back in the 80s. It feels to me like things are going very well for me right now with returning to running and getting fit, but I need a reality check on my goals.

Here's where I am right now. I've run 25 minutes straight both yesterday and today; yesterday, with my son in tow on his bicycle, at a bit over 11 minutes per mile pace; today without him, at... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 21:02:41 EST Back on the bandwagon! I guess I am not a "newbie" to running...but I am a newbie for this year! I gained A LOT of weight over the winter and doubted that I could even jog for 15 minutes. I hopped on today and did a very slow 3mph at a 4% incline for a half hour! Joyful I could "run" for that long and I wanted more! I feel great. So for all you true "newbies" out there, I applaud you all because you are doing it! Have done a few 5ks and sprint triathlons. But the run is always weak for me.
I dream at night of being a lean fast runner. When my dad was in the military he had a sub 5 minute mile with gear on, so I know I have the genetics for it.

My mind always holds me back, and the fact that I usually start too fast and overtrain.

I'm here again at Spark People, after having lost much weight a few times over and I need to take ... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 10:37:27 EST shin splints :-( Sometimes it seems that the exercise gods are conspiring against me...everytime my running starts going well something happens to throw me off my game. Sat, 23 Feb 2013 12:28:38 EST Predicting half-marathon pace I've been running for about nine months now, and have run several 5Ks. I just registered for my first half-marathon, which will be in October. The registration form asked for my expected finish time, so I used a pace predictor (

s-predictor
). I'm just wondering if those predictors tend to be fairly accurate or not. Any feedback? (My 5k time, btw, ranges from 30:41 to 32:31, and the predictor gave me a time just under 2:30:00.) Tue, 19 Feb 2013 00:29:04 EST Hello I am Sarah and am here in the hopes of figuring out running basics and how to get started. I have found some articles on the site that are helpful, I have trouble finding some with how the sites organized. If anyone has advice on what I should know and how to start would be helpful along with how to find articles on the site better. Fri, 15 Feb 2013 20:43:08 EST Pre-run snack I have been searching for a pre-run snack that doesn't make me feel heavy or give me a stomach problem. I have tried yogurt and oatmeal and cereal bars, but I just can't seem to find one that works. I usually have them 45 minutes to an hour before my run. Any suggestions on some other things I can try.

Thanks, Kim Thu, 14 Feb 2013 11:16:19 EST Pre-Training, Cross-Training? April. What can I say? I'm a planner :)

In the meantime, I thought I'd do some cross-training mixed in with walk-running (oh yeah, I can't run for more than two minutes). Spark map your route says 4.5 miles and my Runtastic Pro app that uses GPS says 4?? Thinking I should believe my app but man that sucks cuz I'm not running as well as I thought :o( Mon, 11 Feb 2013 18:51:04 EST Running outside after the treadmill I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I have been running on a treadmill for the winter. I hate the cold, I won't get outside until it warms up. The question is that will it be harder to run outside after running on the treadmill for so long, or will there be no difference? I am concerned that transitioning to the outside may be slower that the treadmill, but I am not sure. Hope someone will know about this, because I really don't know what to expect.
Thanks, Kim Sat, 9 Feb 2013 12:00:53 EST 52 and beginning again to run Hey, my name is Kim and I am almost 52 and am a beginning runner, again. I ran some over the summer but stopped to do some distance bicycling. Starting Jan. 1st I am running again, on a treadmill until it warms up, and strength training. I am a slow runner right now, about 13.55 minute mile, but hope to improve on that number by April when I attempt a 5K. I hope to learn alot from everyone here, and look forward to sharing my journey. Wed, 30 Jan 2013 10:41:59 EST Toenails Hi All,
I did the Disney Marathon a few weeks ago and my big toes (and feet for that matter) were very sore afterwards. My question comes to toenails, and losing them. the toenail on my left big toes was very bad, and I believe it will likely fall off. the top quarter has already disconnected, and the pain has finally lessened to the point that it does not bother me. The catch is I had a great pedicure done before the race in the event that I blackened a few, and I do not want to remove... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 09:59:09 EST Trust/Not Trust Heart Rate Monitor Readings? If anyone wears a monitor I would like to know your experiences. I wear a heart-rate & calorie burn monitor when I workout. The brand is The Sharper Image with a chest strap. I use it mainly for my cardio workouts; bicycle, C25K training, treadmill and rowing machine. The heart-rate (HR) monitor is very close as the treadmill or recumbent bike readings, but where the huge difference is the calories burned readings. For example: During my last treadmill workout, C25K training W1D2, my monitor... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 12:22:27 EST Are you racing this week? Jan 21st - Jan 27th Are you racing this week? I'm a rookie runner, and I need advice. I really want to do a 5k! I'm not able to run a full 5k yet -- I'm on week 2 of an Ease into 5K program and I'm doing a fair amount of walking in between my running. I live in the South Bay and my family is in Santa Monica. Wed, 9 Jan 2013 20:16:48 EST Sore Calves Hi all! I have just recently re-started running again after some setbacks. I decided to start over in my journey and have started with the C210K program. I plan on running a 10K by the end of this year. I am already signed up to run a 5K in March. Anyway, I am on W2D2 of my program and my calves are really sore after the workout. I run in the Nike Free+ because I don't like the heavy feel of regular running shoes. I am new to the group and somewhat new to running. I have been running for a couple months and just finished my first 5K on New Year's Eve. Hey my name is Ashley and i recently quit smoking, now I am trying so hard to get in shape. Only thing is when I run I'm fine for like 45 seconds then it becomes difficult to keep up with my breathing while running so it is possible for me to keep running. In the end I'm panting and am out of breath. I try to always breath in my nose and out my mouth...just doesn't work all the time. If anybody has any tips or tricks maybe even breathing exercises. Fri, 16 Nov 2012 15:43:44 EST Hi! Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and SparkPeople for that matter. I've been back to running the last few weeks. I'm up to 3 miles 3-4 times a week at about a 10:30 pace. Looking forward to getting faster and stronger. I live in Escondido, CA (Just north of San Diego). Lots of great trail running near me. I look forward to joining in on the discussion. Tue, 13 Nov 2012 18:54:09 EST First 5K next week I am running my very first 5K next week. I am super nervous. I wish my time was better. I can run a 5k in 32-33 minutes, but this course has hills and I am use to running on flat roads. Any advice, trips, motivation? What can I expect? HELP!! SO Nervous! Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the team and new to running. One of my goals is to run a 5K, and I got a bit sidetracked with it because late last year I was told by my doctor that I have osteoarthritis of the hip.

So I'm curious, does anyone here run significant distances with a bad hip? Are there any stretches that I should focus on to manage pain? Any tips would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance :)
Sun, 4 Nov 2012 13:37:59 EST No Excuses November! Hello from rainy and windy Western Pennsylvania! I am 45 years old Polish lady who lives in Pittsburgh area. Started running (jogging, actually) about 7 weeks ago. I'm very slow and sometimes I just struggle, but I really like all this running thing. Signed up for a local 5K on Thanksgiving day morning. Hope to finish it!
Wed, 31 Oct 2012 17:55:12 EST Anyone else NOT focusing on time? I'm one of those people who was never good at running at all and, until this year, couldn't jog a mile without slowing into a walk. Now I'm up to 2.5, but I always feel discouraged when I look at my times since they don't improve much. Thus, I've decided to just focus on how far I can jog without stopping rather than how fast I can do it. Anyone else doing this? Your thoughts?
