Don't know how I became interested but I sure am glad I did. It is one of the most peaceful and enjoyable activities I have ever done. It has also given my husband and I an excuse to drive to different parks in the state to go birding and have a picnic lunch.
Thu, 18 Jul 2013 13:58:43 EST Red Tail Hawks Ezra and Big Red (redtails) are back at Cornell. Of course this is winter, and it might be a young Hawk, so I'm hoping Kim or Dana can help me identify it before I do my blog. Also two birds were at the top of our tree, and at first I thought they were Finches. However, the male has red around its neck. This is also puzzling me. I can't find a bird like it on-line, or in my bird book. Can you help me identify these ... I am not going to set goals to meet to make my life any more stressful than it already is. I am hoping the stress will be less this coming year. I was taking a Leisure learning class at Pensacola Junior College and our instructor pointed out a feeding flock of Waxwings. They were just devouring all the berries on a Holly Tree.
When he put his spotting scope on the bird, they reminded me of a Doris Day movie. She always has that silky smooth look ( a camera trick I'm sure). There it is my Doris Day bird....Cedar Waxwing. Any suggestions about naturally (without harmful chemicals) removing the grime? Thank you! Sun, 9 Oct 2011 15:47:04 EST Are you living in bondage? You can see some of my paintings on my SparkPage and my website:

I previously owned a retail store called "Camille's Wild Birds & Gifts" -- but realized it was taking too much time away from painting so I closed it. I just began listing the remaining inventory on Ebay if any of you are interested.
• Decorative Pewter Bird Feeders
• An architectural Cape Cod Wooden Birdhouse by H... Fri, 12 Dec 2008 18:05:17 EST Interesting Bird Facts I found this today.....

"Hummingbirds are unique among the bird kingdom: they beat their wings very rapidly in a figure eight pattern, which allows them not only to hover in mid-air as they collect nectar but also to fly backward and upside down" -Time (Magazine/Books), Planet Earth-An Illustrated History

I didn't know they could fly upside down...I would like to see that. I got this book at the library. It has great pictures and interesting facts in it.

Kim Tue, 9 Dec 2008 19:34:38 EST Something Fun - Bird Quotes/R ferences For the birds that cannot soar, God has provided low branches. ~Unknown. Sun, 7 Dec 2008 16:20:39 EST Goals for the Group Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself, again, to the group. My name is Kim and just became a co-leader for the team. I not only want to get myself motivated, but I want to get this group motivated as well. I have been on Spark since the end of May and have not been very motivated the last several months to lose any weight. I had been working 2 jobs and with no spare time, I was not able to exercise or eat properly. I am now down to one job and have time on my hands. ... Sun, 7 Dec 2008 16:08:06 EST Any new birds in the neighborhood? The birds have been eating like crazy. I think we may be in for some bad weather.

About 6 Dark-eyed Juncos have joined our merry band. Most of the finch have moved on. A few hearty souls have turned olive drab and continue to hang around.

I read that chickadees can eat 10 percent of their body weight in a day and lose the same on a cold night. (Wish I could!!) I feel guilty when the feeders are empty for a day or two, but I can't get to my Mom's every day. Any new visi... Thu, 13 Nov 2008 11:39:49 EST Feeding Birds Hi everyone!
I'm new to the team and to Birdwatching. I have recently hung feeders in my Mom's yard. She's 85 and loves to watch the antics at the feeders. We get all the usual suspects - Bluebirds, Grackles, Mourning Doves, Goldfinch, Song Sparrows, Darkeyed Juncos, Cardinals, Chickadees, Mockingbirds, Catbirds, Flickers, Tufted Titmice, Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Nuthatches. I think the birds recognize when I visit my Mom because as soon as I arrive they start moving... Sat, 1 Nov 2008 12:53:04 EST Falconry I may love to watch birds, but I found the "sophisticated form of birding watching"! I am checking into becoming a falconer...this is watching your bird, hawk or falcon, hunt for prey. The quarry won't be mine and not really into the killing anything, but I see this as a natural behavior for the bird, so I have no problem with this. I do, however, have to have the time and money to do this. From what I am learning it can be expensive with the just the initial costs of housing the bird, fe... Wed, 13 Aug 2008 19:04:20 EST Peregrine Falcons Hi All,

Just thought I would post because I was excited today that I actually saw the local resident Peregrine Falcons. They reside at one the buildings in downtown Toledo. I work down there and heard a strange noise as I was walking into work this morning. I looked up and saw both taking flight from the top of the building I work in. They have lived and raised young for years in the area.

We do have another pair living in the area, but are harder to see because o... Thu, 24 Jul 2008 20:32:26 EST New to the Team Hi Sandy,

I guess I should introduce myself even though I answered your hummingbird question first.

My name is Kim and I live in NW Ohio, 3rd house from Maumee Bay. I have a great view of the water and have enjoyed the many surprises of wildlife since moving to this neighborhood 5 years ago. I see the local bald eagle, hawks, owls, and the regular assortment of birds....sparrows, grackles, starlings, doves, robins, etc. I even had a pheasant in my yard on Christmas... Sun, 25 May 2008 14:11:34 EST Hummingbirds anyone? Where do you put your feeders? Do you have luck with attracting them? Has anyone ever had baby hummingbirds? Mon, 12 May 2008 12:40:10 EST What birds have you seen today? I've attracted yellow finches, morning doves, cowbirds, starlings (yuck) sparrows, and red-winged blackbirds to my feeders. I saw 2 orioles in a neighborhood that was more mature and had lots of trees. I couldn't believe it! They are so shy and not common this far north - especially this time of year! Mon, 12 May 2008 12:38:42 EST What region are you watching your birds? Share with us where you're from and what kinds of birds you are getting in your area or yard and what kind of habitat and food you are providing. Mon, 12 May 2008 12:36:23 EST
