SparkPeople Low Carb For Dummies Team Messageboard Losing weight but increasing body fat Hello,

So, far things have been going very well weight wise. But I decided to check my body fat on my home scale and from my last measurement 2 weeks ago, it went up like 2%. I read that we shed water weight first, which accounts for a bit of a higher percentage but when will it change over to losing body fat? I am using multiple measurements to gauge my success; inches have been lost too. So, I know I'm moving in the right direction, but I'd love for the body fat to decrease too. Sun, 16 Aug 2015 07:29:09 EST New to group Hello,
My name is Philicia and I am trying to get back to goal ... I did weight watchers for years and got burned out from it... I have been told that low carb is easy ... what do you recommend and do you count your carbs... The trainer at the gym was saying not to eat carbs after 2 but that seems hard to do ... Any ideas are greatly welcome... 234 Tue, 4 Aug 2015 19:50:38 EST When family just doesn't understand... My sister has always been thin; she struggles to maintain the appropriate amount of weight to be considered healthy vs. underweight. I decided to do the 2 week low carb induction (kinda like phase 1 on South Beach). So, when I told her of my new eating routine, she was like, why are you on a diet? These first two weeks seem more like a diet, but really aren't for me. It's a resetting from poor old ways to good new habits. But she does not understand my struggle. I appreciate that she has neve... Wed, 22 Jul 2015 17:40:11 EST Starting Low Carb Starting low carb and nervous. Was successful in the past, but this time I NEED to stick to it. Hoping to gain more knowledge this time around. Wish me luck! Sat, 18 Jul 2015 11:57:58 EST Not eating enough calories Hello,

So, the sparktracker says that I should eat between 1300-1600 calories to achieve my goals. With having about 70 total carbs yesterday, I only got to 1100 calories. I don't want to do damage by denying my body a minimum. Today, with my meal plan, I will get to that amount, again! I had two proteins at breakfast (egg white omelet with sausage), one protein for lunch (turkey burger) and one protein for snack (pecans). My main carbs are from veggies. I'm not putting anything ex... Fri, 17 Jul 2015 14:23:46 EST New to group Hi. My name is Marge and I am new to the group. I have been with Spark people off and on for a few years, but is it now time to get serious with this healthy journey. I have Type 2 Diabetes which is controlled with diet only. I would like to get better at eating low carb meals. I look forward to meeting everyone and be able to share advice, recipes and friendship.
Marge
381 Thu, 16 Jul 2015 15:15:33 EST Going low carb, no specific diet Hello,

I've done South Beach before, but didn't stick with it. Now, I'm making a lifestyle change. I am looking to lose a significant amount of weight, but also make healthier habits for my family. I've noticed more belly weight increases when carbs increase. So, I am starting with 50 carbs a day and seeing how my weight loss moves, whether I need to further reduce my intake. I look forward to learning with and from you all! 381 Thu, 16 Jul 2015 13:42:28 EST Good morning from Illinois!! Hello!! My name is Linda. Wed, 3 Jun 2015 11:52:15 EST Hello Everyone! Hi Everyone,
I have been with Spark People for 4 1/2 years now. Ran into a plateau in 2011 and finally figured out how to break it. Low carb is definitely the way for me. I have lost 10 pounds in just under 2 months. When I joined Spark in 2011, I lost 25 pounds, but the weight loss halted and 12 of those crept back on. Looking forward to swapping tips and recipes with you. Feel free to drop by my spark page or my recent blog post;

Wed, 13 May 2015 18:52:51 EST Hey, I'm missing you all Well, it's me again...I'm finally retired!!! Been so busy, busy, busy. Still need to lose weight. Have managed to keep off the 60 lbs. but stuck. Got lonely for some old friends...I say that kindly. :o). So, like the prodigal son (daughter) I'm baaacck. I think that was a famous line in some horror movie. Anyway, hope you guys will let me back in on the conversation. I miss you and I really do need an azz kickin' to get myself back to losing weight and getting my diabetes in control. Tue, 5 May 2015 22:30:00 EST Weight loss I have been low carbing for 5 days. After 3 days I saw a 3.5 pound weight loss. I know I should not weigh myself everyday but I am so eager to see results. The past two days I have stayed the same. I am trying not to get discouraged but it seems when I get to the weight I am now I cannot get any lower its just stuck there no matter what I have tried. I am fearful To say the least. Sun, 22 Feb 2015 10:23:04 EST Hi, new to group - carb and vegan questions. Hi. So I am trying to live a *mostly* vegan, gluten free, low carb lifestyle (except for today, which was my cheat day!) Anyway, I've only gotten seriously into tracking food this last week and I'll be honest, i didn't go over 1600 calories any day, got some exercise in and didn't even lose 1 pound. Anyway... Sunday - Friday I've been eating vegan and gluten free. I'm not really eating anything processed, mostly fruits, veggies, beans and brown rice but I keep going over my carbs and I think ... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 14:18:31 EST Hey everone! I'm new to the group, and looking for help. After the latest research, I want to go more low-carb, but I really can't do diet plans. I always quit, because they are too restrictive and require too much time and energy. Our church had a gathering last night where they provided the meal, and I went with some trepidation. I had 2 of my little low carb peanut butter cookies about an hour before we left. When we got there, as I lined up for the buffet, I was much dismayed. There before me was baked beans, ham, potato salad, and buns. For dessert there was banana pudding with cookies in them. Thu, 13 Mar 2014 11:34:39 EST Total Carbs Hi!
I decided to restart my goals, tracking, etc, but I noticed something about the nutrition tracker. It doesn't track net carbs, it tracks just total carbs. Example, I have seen items in the search (and I have added a few) where I know the total carbs would be, say, 4, but they have the carbs at 8. They haven't taken into account the 4 fiber grams. It is hard for me to track my total net carbs for the day if this tracker isn't accurate for me. Does everyone do this, and just deduct the... Wed, 12 Mar 2014 10:49:12 EST Yay! I gained 5 lbs! I have been low carbing it for 8 weeks and I have gained 5 lbs. I wonder how many other woe and weight loss programs can claim that! Sorry, I am obviously rather upset. I assume it is something I am doing because I am too stupid to get it right, because why does everyone else lose weight after 1 week, and I do nothing but gain? Wed, 5 Mar 2014 09:33:18 EST Hi guys Nice to find a welcoming place to discus low carb views on healthy eating. I am no stranger to Spark. I've been a member here for years. The sad part is that I have been on a very long-tracked roller coaster for most of the time. The first time around, I lost over 100 pounds. That was also my first time using the Atkins diet plan (the original DANDR). Some serious problems in my family life came up and I let that take away my focus. Totally my fault. I'd like to say that it was a new thing th... Tue, 4 Mar 2014 22:45:29 EST Hi new to the team I'm doing a partial meal replacement plan that is low carb (70 - 100 grams) and low calorie (800 -1000). Fri, 28 Feb 2014 17:29:14 EST Portion sizes I spoke with my nutritionist today, as I was frustrated because I am not only not losing weight, I am actually gaining! From what we could put together, I was really going over the carbs for the day without really realizing it (due to inattention on my part), and the fact that I was overeating. Tue, 4 Feb 2014 15:04:53 EST Sweeteners One thing I forgot to ask my nutritionist about is sweeteners. There are a plethora of sweeteners out there, and it doesn't matter who you ask, someone somewhere thinks it is horrible for you, so I am just sticking with Splenda for now until I can ask my nutritionist. I don't get it at all. This makes no sense to my brain. I know our scale is on, because it is always the same as the doctor's. I also know that I don't have to weigh myself all the time, and I normally o... Mon, 20 Jan 2014 08:37:47 EST Meal question Hi. On another note, I found this recipe online for Brown Butter Mushroom Soup. It looks low-carb and the author says it is. My question is, what else would you have with this to make the meal more rounded out? I know if I ate that alone, I wouldn't be satisfied, and start looking for something else. I would normally have a sandwich, but that is out, but the thought of having just vegetables on the side is not appealing. Any ideas? Wed, 15 Jan 2014 10:25:47 EST Lost and confused Hi all,
I have been on this low-carb woe for a week now, but I am so lost and confused. I haven't seem my nutritionist yet (I think I see her in 2 weeks), and I have no idea what I am doing. I am supposed to have started (according to doctor) at 80-100 carbs per day for one week, and then work down to 40-60 per day. Well I am still confused as to how to do that, except hubby and I have been cutting out bread, pasta and wheat, doing more protein and veggies. But I haven't been very good a... This week I've focused on staying beneath my 20g carbs and increasing my fat level.

I've read in a few places about percentages. Fri, 9 Mar 2012 20:46:43 EST Hi Team! I'm not really new to low carbing but I have come and gone once. I don't intend to go back this time. In 2008 I started the LC lifestyle and lost 60 lbs in 6 months. I NEVER felt better in my entire life. So I've read in numerous places that we don't really need to count calories, as long as we are counting our carb. I am keeping my carbs under 50g every day. However, what would happen if I ate, for example, 2200 calories a day, worked out, but every time keeping my carbs under 50g? Do calories really really not matter? Or do I still need to try and keep that 500-1000 deficit Spark is always promoting?

Thanks in adva... Thu, 23 Feb 2012 04:20:42 EST 2012 Challenge Week 8 Good morning ladies and gentlemen. So, I have a question.

I've been doing the low carb and it is really helpful and I feel great - also stresses my heart out less when digesting meals.

But I am kind of disappointed because my weight keeps bouncing back and forth. How many carbs do some of you usually try to... I bought some at the health food store yesterday because of the low-carb/high fiber content but not sure what I want to do with it. I found these recipes surfing the net that I thought I would share. I am not ready yet to make this kind of stuff because I think it would trigger me to want more bread/dessert stuff but it may come in handy in the future!

r%20Recipes.pdf Mon, 8 Aug 2011 17:11:45 EST anyone else up all night because you gotta tinkle? I know this is a personal question but I just have to know. For over a month I have cut out soda and been drinking mostly water and occasionally sugar -free teas. Anyhow I know that would make me have to pee more but for the last few days while doing this low-carb eating, it has been crazy! I have been getting up 3 and 4 times throughout the night having to pee. And the scale is going down so I shouldn't be complaining too much but is this normal at first? I have a doc appointment this week ... Sun, 7 Aug 2011 10:52:26 EST New to this low-carb mentality and new to team :) Hi Team!
I have been doing some research and trying to find out what kind of approach is best for me. I am definitely looking to decrease my carb intake. I am not an extreme person though and limiting my fruits and fruity juices and smoothies is going to be the toughest part of this journey. I do think though that I can say goodbye to the cupcake shop down the street and maybe not eat a whole boat of pasta at my favorite Italian restaurant. Since I am new to this I am just going to go w... Wisewife died of unknown causes. She was a wonderful friend and I will miss her. Fri, 8 Jul 2011 20:15:27 EST Low Carb Nibbles Out I was just wondering how everyone fares when Low Carbing and eating out? In my week, there are often opportunities that I just have to pick up and go out with no forward planning-this can be to a cafe or sandwich bar (oh no!), or something like that. Aside from obviously not having anything, what are some good choices when out and about? Fri, 8 Jul 2011 11:16:38 EST Hello Everyone! I am elated to have found this site. It suits all of my needs to inspire me to be successful in my weight loss and fitness journey. I have already seen so much positivity and beauty in people here. I have been on a plateau that I am sure has lasted 50 years, despite the fact I've only been alive 20, and I believe my dependance on carbs is partly to blame-I am going to try and rid myself of the 'bad' carb dependance! I'm also doing the P90X regime, so I'm really looking forward to cooking (love!) some good food and changing everything!
Please remember this exhuberance when I'm grouchy from lack of pasta! Thu, 7 Jul 2011 12:44:03 EST Have to find this book After spinning wheels for 2 years, I started low carb 3 weeks ago. It works! One worry, though, I don't like the foods so much.

For the past two years, when I was thinking about how to eat, I was buying books. I checked my past Amazon orders, and I did buy Low Carb for Dummies in 12/09.

From checking on Amazon just now, I see this book does recommend some carbs, so I'm planning to find it and read it.

Increasing foot and knee trouble are my bi... Fri, 6 May 2011 10:12:37 EST What is your favorite low-carb shake or drink? I'm mystified about what I can carry in my purse to eat when I hear a candy bar calling my name. Nuts are good, but I tend to eat too many of them when they are convenient. If I had a can or bottle of a low-carb shake, or meal replacement handy, I'm pretty sure I could quit sabotaging myself by turning to sweets or chips when I'm away from home, the fast food drive-thru is just around the corner, or the convenience store is close-by - if I just had a "survival kit" with me. I know I am.

Although it isn't scientific or even fair, I tend to be able to guess who will be successful at dieting and who won't. Successful dieters are often those who are more adventurous and flexible because, regardless of what anyone says, dieting will require discipline and eliminating or cutting back of certain foods. Dieters will have to find something to replace the trashy carbs that the majority of people are consuming.

I don't hold out ... She is one of those people who writes a blog that is like opening a gift or someone else's toy box - you never know what will be inside but it will be great. I warned her I was thinking of stealing this idea. It's from a book she is reading and is about creating your own toy chest.

-----

"The title sounds funny huh? Interval training is simply alternating short bursts of intense activity with periods of lighter recovery activity. It is a great option for people in good health and some experts swear by it.

In theory you can boost your metabolism, burn more calories in the same amount of time, increase your aerobic endurance capacity, improve your ability to burn fat, get more oxygen to your muscles, and reduce the build up of waste products in your muscles.
... How do your clothes fit? Have your measurements changed?

Today your challenge is to take your measurements and answer these questions.

Wed, 2 Mar 2011 09:01:38 EST Challenge 3/1 Goals It's the first of the month and your challenge today is to evaluate your success, or lack there of, with your February goals and post your March ones. Fri, 25 Feb 2011 09:50:08 EST Challenge 2/24 Goodies In my opinion one of the best ideas that Sparkpeople came up with is goodies. Sending and receiving goodies is fun.

One of my favorite things I've read on sparkpeople was related to goodies. A friend of mine admitted in her blog that when she first started sparkpeople she thought the goodies were real. Wouldn't it be wonderful to earn points to buy a friend a trip to a spa or send them some flowers? I love the idea. If only Sparkpeople had that kind of funds.

Most of us ... LOL.

Adults only need 500 mg of salt per day yet most of us consume a lot more than that. The maximum recommended daily intake of sodium is 2300mg if you are healthy and have no medical problems. 2300mg is the equivalent of 1 tsp. The average person consumes twice that amount and many people consume up to 30 times. If you have high blood pressure, heart disea...
