SparkPeople Almost empty nester Team Messageboard This team if for those who are facing their teens/young adults moving out or starting college--away from home or close by-- Let's get together and share our experiences. SparkPeople Almost empty nester Team Messageboard New to the group Hi! I'm Yvonne and new empty nester. And, not only am I a new empty nester, but hubby is retiring from the military in 2 months, we bought a new house in a new city, and we're trying to figure out how to do the empty nest/retirement/move across country thing all at one time. And, for me, stay mentally strong and continue on my journey to get fit and healthy.

Our girls are already back to college, a junior 3 hrs away and a freshman 3.5 hours away. And my household goods should... Tue, 1 Sep 2015 06:01:36 EST Been away I've been away, but I've been still tracking my activity and food. We went to Quebec City two weekends ago for a quick family vacation. We came back that Sunday and I started back at work with a workshop on Monday. My youngest stepson started school Tuesday and our oldest left Friday for school. My husband and I then brought in 8 tons (400 bags!!!) of wood pellets in 3 hours Saturday morning, then took down the above ground pool we had Sunday. It's been a very busy time, especially now t... Thu, 27 Aug 2015 21:39:37 EST Hi I'm a new member My is Mary Beth and my one and only child is going off to college in a week and a half. I'm divorced and have no family members in the city I live in and I'm a little worried about how I'm going to react to her being gone. It will be just me and my 2 dogs and a cat Sat, 8 Aug 2015 22:23:22 EST Our 1st time Our oldest will be moving in to the dorms in just over 2 weeks. He'll be playing soccer, so he gets an earlier start. He'll only be an hour away, but it will still be an adjustment for us all. I'm his stepmom, but have helped raised him and his brother for the past 13 years, so I'm just as much a part of his life as his biological parents. Which means, that this transition is just as difficult for me as everyone else. I'm excited for him, but at the same time wish that he was still in h... Wed, 5 Aug 2015 12:29:34 EST Trying to get back on track! O.o Five years ago I was running 5k's and biking easily 70+ miles a week, and walking in between. That ended with a tough bought of pneumonia, then getting RIFed from my school district, and changing schools and districts 3 times, and obtaining my masters through it all. This fall will be the first time in 4 years that I don't have to relocate and recreate the wheel.

During that time I've ballooned gaining 30 pounds. 46 I'm so down about it, but can't get myself back i... You don't have to touch them but the more we try, the more bend we will have.
Dianne, glad you got so much set up yesterday and hope the girls wake up early enough to help out. Too bad you can't do the run with your brother. Good going on those steps after sitting in the car so long. Was she cooking eggs for the breakfast bar or for herself?
Anne, s... I am a single mom. I joined SP Jan 19, 2015. I read an article about how teams can support you. I have never looked up teams before, I just stuck to the teams that were given to me when I joined or I was invited to join. Since then I've been looking at my friends teams to see if they fit me. As well as looking at the teams I am on to see if they fit me. I have been in the process of leaving teams and joining teams. I thought there must be a team for empty nesters. I... Sat, 16 May 2015 12:11:50 EST New to this team Hi!

I've been on Sparkpeople since January but haven't been very active in the community. Today our son just came home from his freshman year in college. It will be interesting to see how we adjust to the situation. In some ways it's like having a stranger, who has a remarkable similarity to someone you used to know, move into your house. Who is this person and why is my living room filled with things that I haven't seen before? For that matter, all of his things are here but where... Sun, 1 Mar 2015 07:04:21 EST hello team Hi everyone! 213 I probably should have joined this team last year when my daughter was a senior in high school. It seems like it was just yesterday that we dropped her off to college back in mid-September. I was feeling sad for a long time, but was also very busy at my job as a teacher for preschoolers with special needs. In other words, I was very stressed out. I am feeling much better now and my class has calmed down since we are halfway through the school year.

We ... Sun, 22 Feb 2015 17:00:12 EST Loving ourselves Feb. Sat, 8 Sep 2012 23:39:37 EST Developing 12 New Healthy Living Patterns/Habits I wanted to start a new topic under challenges to get myself and others into the head space of changing our bad habits into good habits. One of the first things I wanted to do was find another word for "habit" - we all have our likes and dislikes and we all develop patterns of living that suit our comfort needs. Quite often developing new habits - or living patterns means we have to go outside our comfort needs in order to change them .

On one of my other teams a friend is making c... I am really trying to cope with it, but it really hasn't hit me yet. DH thinks it has because I am doing all the right things for/with her...packing, buying stuff, laundry, etc.... But I'm not okay with it... We were supposed to go to the movies on Tuesday night, but I was too tired. So I thought, oh, that's okay we'll go next week....but we WON'T because she won't be here!! Tue, 31 Jul 2012 22:09:33 EST Hi - I'm Hannah, looking for ideas I am currently struggling with the almost empty nest syndrome. Daughters #1 and #2 are both moving out. Daughter #2 moved to Milwaukee - she's a senior in college. Rented an apartment for the next year. Daughter #1 is moving to AZ in a week. I still have 2 at home, 17 and 11. It has been such an emotional summer. I can't balance my self. Any suggestions? Sun, 29 Jul 2012 20:24:46 EST One down....two(?) to go! Hi - we have 3 boys (men) all in their 20's. Our middle son who has several medical challenges is the one who has flown first - 10 states away. He is doing great!

Instead of now having two left at home....the older son's girlfriend has moved into the spare bedroom. Mon, 19 Mar 2012 16:41:08 EST New Here with a Semi-Empty Nest Hi! I'm Clare. So happy to have found you all. My 18 year old son is working full-time and is gone more than he's home. He's an only child and my husband usually works nights, so I am getting used to lots of time alone. After so many years of having to be available 24/7, this is a little weird. I enjoy the alone time, but still feel a little lost and lonely. Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:52:47 EST Newbie Hi Everyone, I'm not quite an empty nester and I dread that day. For this I am so very thankful. I can't imagine our home without her in it. Her father and I have been married for almost 25 years, and well, he's a bit boring and grumpy. Claire is the li... So this is a stretch for me. but here I am and I want to be successful. Time for new things and new challenges. Let go of the past and find a new beginning. My son's would say if they knew...Go for it MOM! thank you for letting me join and I hope it works!
Vicki Tue, 14 Feb 2012 12:29:48 EST Daily check-in: how do you feel today? It good for me to acknowledge how I am feeling on a daily basis. I find it ties into my tendency to stand in front of the fridge despite not being sure if I'm even hungry. I feel___________.., is going to be one of my challenges and would like team members to join and support. mmmk?

At this early morning I FEEL tired and restless at the same time. Not hungry or thirsty. Mon, 13 Feb 2012 00:30:59 EST Simple meals to teach a young man before he moves Yes, I know; I should have taught my son how to cook everyday simple meals. He rarely was in the kitchen (oops) and now he's moving out when he graduates.

What simple meals do you suggest I teach so that he doesn't get in the habit of fast food and poor meal plannings.
He makes sandwiches, opens can soups, and makes spaghetti. Yikes, that's is so bad.

TIA for sharing :)
~lola and Gunnie Sat, 11 Feb 2012 09:44:11 EST Hello from Fayetteville! My name is Lola My son will be joining the military soon and Mr. Gunther, my wiener dog, and I will have the house all to ourselves. I'm not looking forward to it. I must now focus on taking care of myself. On a positive note, I will be cooking for one and not eating my son's left overs. I have to learn how to cook for one. Should be interesting. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Sat, 31 Dec 2011 09:43:08 EST January Decluttering Challenge It's a new year and time to get rid of a lot of clutter that is interfering in our lives----there is a tie in to having clutter and being unhappy with our weight and health. So time to get rid of some of this and get ourselves organized. First off, you cannot do this in a day or even a couple of days---why we don't do it to start with it that we get overwhelmed by the whole process. So think small! We're going up there for vacation in a week and my daughter is coming home for a week in June for a visit but other than that, they will not be here. It was kind of strange last summer when they came back from college and David and I had to get used to them "invading" the house, so to speak. But ... Mon, 11 Jan 2010 06:01:13 EST Q.O.D., - Sunday, January 9 Can someone else do the Q.O.D for the coming week?

**********************

(Perhaps we can rotate each week.)
Sun, 10 Jan 2010 22:15:41 EST Q.O.D., - Saturday, January 9 Are your Holiday decorations still up?

*******************************
Except for a few snowmen-type items inside (which will remain out until at least the end of Jan.), my Christmas stuff is all put away.

Outside there are two wreaths still hanging, that will likely come down tomorrow. Sat, 9 Jan 2010 16:50:27 EST Q.O.D. JAN. 10 Are weekends hard for you to keep on track with eating and exercise? What do you do to stay on track if you do? Sat, 9 Jan 2010 12:27:37 EST Q.O.D., - Friday, January 8 Any special plans this weekend?

We are having a get-together (about 18) tomorrow afternoon/evening. (GO JETS)

DD heading back to school on Sunday. She's had a heavy bought of sinusitis since she got home. ENT advised she does not fly, so we may be facing an 11+ hour road trip (each way)....

Hope you all have some fun and/or productive weekend plans! Fri, 8 Jan 2010 12:48:13 EST Q.O.D. - Thurs, January 7 Are your kids readers? Do they read for leisure?

(In our generation, at their ages, we didn't have all the technology our kids have access to -- which I think could contribute to hindering reading as a pastime.) Thu, 7 Jan 2010 07:01:59 EST Q.O.D. - Wed., January 6 Does your teen/young adult child cook at home? Wed, 6 Jan 2010 09:08:55 EST "Question of the Day" Perhaps, to generate more posting activity on this team, we might pose a "Question of the Day" or "QOD"

Anyone can start a new thread if one hasn't yet started for that day. Perhaps title the thread "QOD Jan 6" or whatever the day is.

The question can be related to the team theme, or not -- it can serve as a way to get to know each other better. The question can be answered quickly (or in detail).

I saw this on another team and it looks like fun!

Sa... Wed, 6 Jan 2010 09:06:01 EST Empty nest, return, almost empty nester again Ha, that sounds like my time here at Sparkpeople and on my eating plan. Up, down, up, down, etc. you know the cycle.
Our youngest left for a residential high school and then returned home, but this fall she'll be off again and I'll adjust...again.
For health, this time, the plan is to plug into teams to hopefully stay more motivated and accountable to helping others as well.
Nice to meet you all.
Deb Sun, 3 Jan 2010 14:55:32 EST Bummed.... My daughter will not be able to fly home this evening, due to SNOW -- lots of it. This past week is the first time she expressed home-sickness (finals-induced stress).

I just want her home. The pain of missing my Mom is a little more acute this year than last, and I just need my daughter home with me.

Keeping fingers crossed that she can get in tomorrow morning since she has 2pm plans with my Dad. Unlikely.

Thanks for letting me vent. Sat, 19 Dec 2009 07:04:15 EST Favorite Foods for the holidays! You can just pass the stuffing to me---as long as I have that I am happy---but in our neck of the woods we call it dressing---we don't actually stuff it inside the bird.
Also, feel free to share some recipes on here---I love to bake and like shortcut recipes---LOL---but they do create some awesome cookies that way. I bake and give away! Tue, 24 Nov 2009 10:24:39 EST Things we are thankful for! For this holiday season, I thought it would be nice to post--daily if possible--things we are thankful for in our lives!
I am thankful for Spark---I have made such wonderful friends and learned sooo much on this journey---and the weight loss has made such a difference in my life--my quality of life is sooo amazing---never thought I would ever have this much energy. Tue, 24 Nov 2009 10:22:33 EST So, whose kids are coming home for the holidays? I am very excited that my daughter (college freshman) is coming home next week! We are spending Thanksgiving with relatives. (I am not hosting, but cooking/baking and bringing almost all but the turkey.)

It is costly for her to come home, so I am grateful she is able to (which may not be the case in the coming college years). Definitely NOT looking forward to flight delays that usually go in-hand with the "busiest travel day of the year". And I'm a bit nervous about her flying on h... My daughter just got married October 3, 2009 - a happy occasion. She had moved in with her finance a year ago so when she got married - at least I was used to her being gone. Her 2 older brothers were still home. Well on the very same weekend Kelly got married, Mark, my middle son moved out and bought a townhouse with his girlfriend. And my oldest son, Matt is in... Thu, 5 Nov 2009 10:18:19 EST Day in Court WELL, COURT WAS INTERESTING. WE HAD TO LAUGH AT THE LAWYER. TALK ABOUT SOMEONE WHO WAS NOT PREPARED TO DEAL WITH US! IT ENDED UP BEING THROWN OUT OF COURT BY THE JUDGE--THE JUDGE ASKED US IF WE WERE CONTESTING---WE SAID YES---DO YOU HAVE WITNESSES? YES---THEN HE ASKED THE LAWYER---NO---WELL, YOU ARE NOT THE AGENT FOR THE PARK , YOU CAN REPRESENT THE PARK BUT YOU CANNOT TESTIFY AS YOU ARE NOT THE AGENT. THE PAPER WORK YOU FILED REQUIRES THE AGENT TO BE PRESENT IF IT IS CONTESTED. HEHEHE AND HE... Wed, 28 Oct 2009 15:24:30 EST College searches Hi everyone,

Daughter in Sr year and only looking at small colleges - like 5,000 to 7,000. EEEKKK To me that only defines "private" colleges.

Is an A+ student with high GPA but did minimal on ACT. Not to mention hubby out of work since 2/08 real monies here. Need to push for as many and as much scholarship funds possible. Just wonder how private colleges do on that. Would love for her to find a great Christian college... I haven't visited her, we don't "video chat" -- I can't wait to see her/hug her! Mon, 12 Oct 2009 08:42:59 EST Autumn Highlights Okay, time for a new activity. Autumn is my favorite time of the year---orange being the key here---and there are so many activities that are associated with Fall. So let's see how many things we can come up with---it can be a fav food for this time of year, an outdoor activity, a holiday tradition, a decorating tip---anything related to this wonderful time of the year. Have fun with this. 465 426 427 431 422 420 429 <em... Sun, 4 Oct 2009 06:50:00 EST "Care" Packages What items do you find to be popular requests from your college kids? Do homemade cookies travel well, LOL?

I know that most items can be obtained on or around campus, but even in this age of technology it's still fun to receive a letter or package, right?

I am sending off a package today: sweatpants (requested), along with some Vitamin C drops and some packages of travel-tissues. (She had a cold this past week.)

Also -- thinking of holidays (Halloween/Autumn)... Sat, 12 Sep 2009 11:46:42 EST My son leaves for college Friday.. .waaaah! Hi All, This is my son's second year in college and I thought that I would be fine with him returning to college in Boston (we live in the DC area), being that it's his second year and I survived. But I have been having butterflies, wakeful nights, and a little weepy too. He's been home all summer and it's been great having him around!! I just was surprised at my reaction and wondered if anyone has experienced this the second year??

Thanks Almost Empty Nesters!! Wed, 9 Sep 2009 12:53:49 EST Saying hello.... I was looking for a team for parents of first-time college students and this one was closest :-)

My daughter is a freshman at college this year, close to 700 miles away. Sun, 12 Jul 2009 20:25:01 EST Hi All...I am new to this team Just discovered your team. I am a happy mom of two "kids." My son just finished this first year at Emerson College in Boston and is now home for the summer! My daughter is a live-at-home grad student of Univ. of MD. I have been through the struggle of leaving them off at college for the first time and boy does it ache. I cried for days when each of them left. It gets a little easier as time goes by, but it's one of the hardest things to do. They are both around this summer, and hubby a... Wed, 17 Jun 2009 14:58:13 EST Glad I found this team Hello everyone. I am reconnecting with Sparkpeople after a long absence. I turn 50 next month, then send my son, my only bio child, off to college in another state in the fall. I also have a stepdaughter who just finished her freshman year in college (also in another state) and who is home for the summer. Have noticed in the last year that I seem to have hit another metabolism slowdown, so the weight is creeping up, just as the body seems less inclined to move. I don't have a lot to lose, but... I am truly grateful that his education is paid for as long as he keeps his grades up and remains at that school.
