It took months for me to get here but here is the problem... the day after I run a 5K, both my knees have like a very light general ache, even when doing normal things and it's when bending. Like on a scale of 1-10, 1 being nothing and 10 being excrutiating, it's like a 2. I run on very soft pavement at the park (horse trail). Is... Sat, 27 Aug 2011 22:29:19 EST 3 miles/day within reach! Sat, 3 Oct 2009 12:59:36 EST Question about running and resting I have been running and obvously I love it I have already worn out a pair of shoes lol but my question is when a person runs how many days do you run before you give yourself a break to let your muscles rest? I did 2 days of running and rested for a day and ran the next day and it was like I had never ran before! I was so tired. I have gotten different things from different people and I am just confused. Thu, 4 Jun 2009 21:28:11 EST Learning to run! I've decided running might be a fun way to break up my exercise routine (which really doesn't exist anyway) so I bought a pair of cross trainers and gave it a shot! I've only walked/jogged twice in the last week, but I had fun when I did! Last night I was feeling stressed so at 8:30 and in the pouring rain I took off for a 2.3 mile course in my neighborhood. Tue, 26 May 2009 11:15:27 EST achieving a life goal hi everyone! I'm new to this group!! I've been running for a month now and find myself getting stronger every day. I'll be running in my first 5K ever in 2 weeks. I have noticed that my feet are throbbing as well as my knees. I went to a local running store today and was properly fitted into nice running shoes. However I have small, wide feet so I have to wait for them to come in. :( That's ok because I know once I get them, I'll notice a difference. Looking forward to the journey ahead! Mon, 27 Apr 2009 16:46:30 EST Jeff Galloway recommen dations? I am interested in trying Jeff Galloway's run-walk-run method and would like to get one of his books. Thu, 10 May 2007 08:54:17 EST Beginner's Routine Hi. I was wondering if there are any good and easy to follow routines for beginning runners. Until now I've just ran at will, but am looking to start really training, I'd like to work on distance first. I'm just not quite sure how to do this safely and worry about injuring myself, and also worry about progressing too slowly. I've browsed through a couple websites but find most routines difficult to follow or too hard to remember during a run. Thanks. Sun, 8 Apr 2007 13:56:06 EST New to Team Hi! I have been on spark since October 06. I have been walking every day for a while and recently started adding a few minutes of running. I enjoy it more than walking but it's not easy yet! In high school I was in Cross Country running and I keep telling myself, "Ive done it before...I can do it again!" I would like for it to be as effortless as the other runners on the track at the park make it look! Thu, 29 Mar 2007 11:37:01 EST New runner Hey I've been on this team for ..2 weeks..and I finally ran/jog/walked butt is still sore!...I just wanted some tips on posture, how high my legs should go when I run, holding in my stomach, etc. So that I can start the journey on being a better runner. Tue, 20 Mar 2007 10:13:03 EST Shin splints I don't know if any of you subscribe to Runner's World magazine, but it is chock full of information. My husband is a runner & I'm just starting out, so I get to read his mag.

Shin splints seem to be a troubling condition for a lot of runners. The current issue addresses this in a couple of its articles. I would relay them here, but it had too much info & I don't want to get anything wrong. I'm sure the same info is in their website:

Hope this helps.... Sat, 3 Mar 2007 08:42:25 EST Sore Feet What do you use to soothe away the aches and pain?

With increased jogging and running I've noticed that my feet and, bit toes especially, are more sore.

I soak once a week and massage my feet every night but is there anything else I should also do?

I was professionally fit when I purchased my running sneakers so proper footwear is already in place. I've also been instructed on proper running form so I always try to monitor myself when on the track or treadmil... Sun, 25 Feb 2007 01:33:10 EST Which to work on...time or speed Hello!!

I just started running on our treadmill at home. Actually a walk/jog combo. I can run for 5 minutes at 4.5mph, but can only run 2.5 minutes at 5mph. Should I strive to increase my time at a faster speed?? What's work best for y'all???
TIA!!

Mary Wed, 14 Feb 2007 16:27:16 EST Treadmill running Hi, all! I just had a question: does anyone else feel "unnatural" running on a treadmill? I have not done much running outdoors yet since I just started this past month. The weather has been pretty icy & dangerous where I live right now; just waiting for better weather, so most of my running has been on treadmills.

By "unnatural" I mean that my stride seems a little awkward(sp?). It almost feels like I'm modifying my natural stride to fit the machine. I guess I won't find ou... Tue, 6 Feb 2007 14:16:08 EST New to Running I've always wanted to run but everytime I try psychologically I tell myself I can't do it. I ready to change that thinking and hope this team will help me do that. Sun, 4 Feb 2007 01:16:41 EST Running challenge Since we're all pretty new at running, I was wondering how everyone was doing & if you're all getting out there to run on a regular basis. For me, it's a challenge to get to the gym & use the treadmill ( too icy here in Chicago to run outside, might slip & break a hip!), but I did make it 3x last week in spite of it all.

My challenge to all of you is to run at least 3 times this week (or more for you over-achievers). Good luck to everyone! Sun, 28 Jan 2007 23:55:58 EST New Member I doubted very strongly that I would ever learn to enjoy jogging or running but since deciding to get serious about cardio at the beginning of the year I have noticed that running has not only become easier but more enjoyable.

When I first started it felt as though I would drop after a short 2-4 minute run. So I decided to try interval training after reading a SP article along with other information found online. I am very pleased to say that I am now up to walking 4, running 12 ... Mon, 22 Jan 2007 06:15:12 EST Injuries, overuse, advice? Hi! I'm wondering if anyone has advice on shin splints and sore knees. I think it's a technique issue and I'm trying to figure out the right way to put down my foot. I'm also working on strengthening my quads, hamstrings, and abductors / aductors (I've heard that this helps with the knees). Anyone have anything to share? Sun, 21 Jan 2007 17:38:05 EST Beginner I've started trying to run...but I'm just terrible at it. My first day (before Christmas), I ran to the end of my driveway (timed today, 52 seconds), and I thought I was going to die, so I walked back, and repeated that about 3 more times, taking a break between each one.

Today, I walked down and back first, to warm up, and then ran down and walked back 3 times, taking a 30-60 rest between each one. It already seems easier! I hope I can run again on Monday (not have such a long bre... Fri, 29 Dec 2006 16:05:53 EST How to begin running? i've never ever been a runner, I've always hated it. Not to mention, I have ashtma. It is very hard for me to do a very aerobic exercise for over 20 minutes. I've never even wanted to run. But recently, I've kinda thought I would like to start running...but I really suck at it! I'm not able to run well, or for any good distance or time...especially with having asthma.

However, I know that if I condition myself and work at it, I WILL be able to do it in time. BUT I have no idea how ... Thu, 7 Dec 2006 12:43:31 EST Benched! I've been having some minor knee pain which manifested right as I increased my daily mileage to about 4 miles/11:30 pace. So, I haven't run since Saturday.

I'm using the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and continuing my strength training. I have a couple of ideas about why the pain started and I hope to hit the pavement again on Saturday.

Hopefully, it's nothing too serious and I get can back to my training schedule as I have a race in about a month. <B... Thu, 19 Oct 2006 06:54:50 EST RESOURCES - books, websites, etc. If you have a good resource to share, why not post it here. Share the love. : )

For newbies like moi, I would suggest the book "The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life" by John Bingham. It's an easy, entertaining, and inspirational read. Bingham is a writer for Runner's World magazine and specializes in the "slow and steady" runner. Enjoy! Sun, 10 Sep 2006 07:11:02 EST Really just getting started It seems that everyone is akready running a 5K or more. I am just starting with the Runner's World 8 week beginning runner's training program. I am just finnishing the first week of running 1 minute, walking 2 minutes x 10. Next week is running 2 minutes, walking 1 minute and goes up from there. It started out exhausting me, but today I felt a little more energised when I finished. Hope I can keep on going up in the running. If anyone has any ideas on getting an energy boost I would appreciat... Fri, 8 Sep 2006 06:37:57 EST New Guy Hey all,

I love running, and have been on and off for a few years. I would go as far to say that I'm a professional beginner. It seems that I always end up working up to being able to run about 3 miles straight, then wind up slacking off and eventually quitting.

This time, however, I'm committed to getting into a healthier lifestyle, and that includes running 5 times a week. So far I've been jogging the resevoir (1.57 miles) in Central Park (NYC) every weekday morning b... Mon, 14 Aug 2006 19:30:11 EST Running Music There must be a few more people out there like me, who would crash and burn within 2 minutes of running without their mp3/cd players. So what sort of music do you listen to while you run? What keeps you motivated? What do you recommend others listen to?

Currently on my mp3 list:

Matchbox 20 - Mad Season
Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions
A workout mix of 80s dance songs (think Cyndi Lauper, Wham!, ABBA)

I've tried listening to these, but they don't se...
