SparkPeople Runner's Cafe Team Messageboard Kick off your running shoes and join us for motivation, conversation, and FUN!!! From novice to advanced.... weight loss to maintenance. Let's Chat! SparkPeople Runner's Cafe Team Messageboard New, but not a newbie Hi everyone!

I'm new to this team, and I know it looks like I'm new to Spark, but I've been on and off (mostly off, for the last 2 years) of the site for nearly a decade, and after a few years of basically falling apart on the fitness and health front, I'm in the worst shape of my life and looking to restart. Running has always been one of my favorite activities, so I'm planning to make it an integral part of my routine going forward. Looking forward to chatting with you all and ... Fri, 3 Apr 2015 13:01:00 EST Long Winter Runs I love my long runs, even if i can only get one run per week in I try to make it over an hour. I'd like to run longer but I struggle to fit longer sessions in.
Anyone else like the longer runs? Wed, 14 Jan 2015 16:43:32 EST Hi There! This team caught my eye because it sounds motivating, positive and fun. I am a fairly new runner, been running about a year now. I am training for a 1/2 right now. I live in a fairly temperate region of the U.S. but it has been a somewhat cold winter and sometimes I find it hard to get outdoors and get my runs in. But, I usually make it out there and get it done! Looking forward to joining in some of the conversations with this team! Tue, 13 Jan 2015 20:26:31 EST New to the team but not to SP Good Morning!

My name is Bobbie, I started running in 2009 when a Sparkfriend wanted me to participate in a 5K with her. While I knew I wouldn't be able to run the entire distance I still signed up and started with the Couch to 5K program. But I also quit running that year. I got frustrated that I could walk faster than I could run.

But in January to 2010 I decided to give it another try. While I could still walk faster than I could run I decided to just give myself to ... Mon, 20 Jan 2014 07:52:27 EST New Team Leader Hello everyone :)

Just wanted to introduce myself and start getting to know the group. My name is Heather ( mzkyndly) I live in MI, brrrrrrrrrr though i am a transplanted southerner. I have been around sparks off and on for a couple of years, but it wasn't until the past few months that I started bucking down and getting serious.
Most days , especially in midwinter I can be found hiking with my 3 dogs ( a pug, pibble, and boxer) around our 40 acre middle of nowhere piece of ... Fri, 17 Jan 2014 08:58:36 EST I'm New! Hi Everyone! I'm Kiera and I just started a C25K program 8 weeks ago. I'm finally up to running almost 30 minutes straight and am definitely getting hooked on running. Looking forward to getting to know you all and motivating each other! 244 Wed, 19 Jun 2013 17:46:39 EST I'm Gill and I'm a new runner! Hi! Having just completed my first 5k (my own measured route) at the end of the Spark People's Walk/Jog C25K programme - I am sitting here with my coffee browsing the teams, wanting to be part of a supportive community to keep me going with the running. This looks like a cosy group - so, here I am!
My next step is the Spark programme to be able to jog the whole 5k with no walking. I have signed up for a charity 5k event in May (Race for Life) and so that is my immediate goal.
But... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 08:09:29 EST Hi Hi I'm Anne, I love to run. I run for health, I run for my mood. Amazing how much better I feel after a good run. I've taken a few days off here and there so running this month has been sparse but tomorrow I want to make a fresh start and run at least 6 days a week. Low mileage to start and build from there. I'm a married sahm to two kids Sun, 24 Feb 2013 07:46:02 EST :-D Hello again! Some of you may remember me, a few years ago I was on SP ALL THE TIME! But my hubby left for BCT in the Army and I kinda fell off the horse--I didn't have as much time to run because I didn't have a babysitter. Well, I've been back and forth the past few years--yesterday my wonderful hubby got me a Garmin 410--it got here yesterday rather--and now I'm back on the horse!! I'm so excited! I took it out yesterday and it was the best run I've had in a long time! 334 Wed, 30 Jan 2013 12:06:59 EST New & Excited I am 27 y/o. I'm married, no children yet but I have a great little black lab/ pitbull mix who thinks he's a person. I started running about a year ago, completed my first half marathon in October and I'm training for my first full marathon taking place April 28th (Gettysburg North/South Marathon). My goal for my first marathon is to run the entire distance and soak up the experience. I'm training and running the race with a more experienced friend and neighbor which is making it seem fun... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 10:04:18 EST What motivates you? What is it that motivates you to run, workout, eat healthy or whatever other goals you have?

For me it's the energy I feel and the way I sleep when I eat well. It makes my running so much easier and more enjoyable and means I can indulge in my running for moments of freedom. Fri, 4 Jan 2013 04:03:18 EST 2013 Big Challenge The way this challenge will work is you post the number of miles you ran on your last run and your running total. You will also be able to accumulate bonus points, usually on special days. Tommorrow, New Years Day will earn you 5 bonus points for getting a run in. You will keep track of your own score and at the end of the last day of the month I will award Spark Goodie Prizes to the person who accumalets the most mileage that month and the most mileage in total (I will use the dates and time... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 04:28:56 EST Motivation in winter months Just wondering how everyone's motivation is with the cold weather and nights drawing in early.

My motivation has waned lately but for different reasons, the winter makes it that bit harder to get going again though! I'm hoping for a good run tomorrow morning.... Fri, 30 Nov 2012 12:05:30 EST Staying Visable at night I bought 'iron on' reflective stars that I have ironed onto my hydration pack and baseball cap. They have attached really well. I also bought led reflective arm bands that flash red and my dad gave me a hi-vis vest. I was hit off my push bike by a car a couple of years ago so I'm probably a bit obsessive about being seen!

What do you wear to make sure you're seen at night? Tue, 20 Nov 2012 16:26:11 EST Introduction and Hello! Good morning everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself. Unfortunately I strained my calf rather badly a while back, and now I'm stuck with biking and strength training. I was hoping to be able to live (or rather, run) through you in this group until I can get back on the running track myself! 334 Tue, 31 Jul 2012 15:54:00 EST Does running trails build fitness faster? Hi All,

I've recently started running on hiking trails again which includes some uphill running. I usually run through the city on flat land. I've noticed that running the trails works me a lot harder. Also, because I'm not used to running up hills, I do have to walk some of them...whew. My question is, will running on these types of trails increase my fitness and make running on flat sidewalks easier because of all of the uneven land (up/down etc...) I'm running on or is it pretty... Tue, 5 Jun 2012 18:16:22 EST new to sparkpeople! hello everyone! my name is Ashley and I recently joined sparkpeople. i LOVE running!!! I try to do a 5k once a month and am hoping to do a half marathon within the next year. i'm about to join my local runners club also. I was brought to sparkpeople because I want to lose about 20lbs. In April, my 10K had one goal: finish without walking. Did it. But it was 81 minutes (not bad for a guy 52 years old and 230 pounds).

Goal of all this training: to beat 65 minutes. I've done it in training. But in a race you never know the terrain or weather. But it's been a success regardless! I am new to the team and I was hoping to get some opinions about sneakers. I really like New Balance, I find them the most comfortable. But I wanted to know if you actually need running shoes to run, and walking shoes to walk? Does it matter. I recently bought a pair of NB Trail - does it matter if I use them to run/walk/go to the gym?? Thanks! Tue, 23 Aug 2011 20:41:12 EST New around here! Hi all, newbie here! I ran my first 20K today and plan to run the Las Vegas Rock n Roll (1/2 marathon) in December. I wouldn't say it was a picnic but I was happy with my time for my first 20K. Very excited to have it under my belt. Prior to this I had only done 5K races. Was thrilled to have my daughter run it with me. We supported each other. It was great! Sun, 28 Nov 2010 08:37:08 EST Indian Summer - possibly the last really nice day Here in Ohio we have had some absolutely BEAUTIFUL fall days this week. Very pleasant- lows in the 30's but highs in the 60's and 70's. Today it got to at least 70 and I did a long run of 10 miles, drinking in the sunshine and enjoying listening to an audio book in MP3 format. I am hoping to get out for a run this morning, but it is SO windy here. I swear its been blowing a gale for 2 weeks. Sun, 8 Aug 2010 18:43:53 EST Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer I have a Fit Sense FS-1 speedometer with a watch and a shoe pod that I have had for some time. When I first began using it years ago it was incredibly accurate. I hadn't used it in some time but I got it out, changed the batteries and recalibrated it on a 400 meter track. But when I run it is considerably off on mileage and speed. Does anyone have one of these? Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong? This is one of the first things I tell people about myself, often even before my name. I. Love. to. Run. I'm newly graduated from high school, currently on foreign exchange with Rotary International in Belgium (Wallonia, for those of you in the know). All through high school I ran track, and my senior year was my first year of cross-country. Now, I've always been a sprinter - third leg of the 4x1, frequently thrown in the 200, the anchor in the 4x4 - a hurdler primarily. 400 me... Anyways I am always up for talking about running and ways to run faster. When I started SparkPeople I weighed in at 260lbs. Joined SP in January of this year as I worked to lose weight. I have shed 25 lbs thus far, and have another 24 to lose. After building up endurance on the elliptical, I plugged into the iPod and went for a slow, steady run. After 3 miles, the rest is history! I prefer to run over any other activity now. I just ran my second 5k, and I signed up for a marathon in training starts next week. Well I just got back into running and after my first 6.45K on Friday, I started to get a somewhat productive cough and feel quite a bit more tired. I tried running the same distance today and only could make it 3/4 of the way and had to stop and walk. I have asked a few doctors and received a different response each time. One doctor says if you are coughing then you should not run until you are feeling better (don't mess with the lungs), the next doctor will say as long as you slow down if... Mon, 16 Mar 2009 22:26:10 EST running outside in wind and possible t-storm? So, I'm supposed to go for a 7.5 mile run today (trying to build up to a long run of 10+ miles) but it's SUPER windy out right now and the weather channel reports a high possibility of scattered thunder storms throughout the day. I really don't want to be halfway out and then have to run over 3.5 miles in a thunderstorm. Plus, I hate running against the wind (currently it's 20mph). Anyway, what I'm wanting to know is if YOU would run if there was a possibility that you could be running back i... Sun, 8 Mar 2009 10:17:39 EST There is always a new gal! Hey to all of you! Tue, 6 Jan 2009 10:55:19 EST Hello All!!!! *waves hi* Hello all,
This seems like a really great forum, I'm really happy that I found this SP team. :) I'm April, 20 years old, just getting back on the road to running after recovering from a knee injury. :) I do 60-90 minutes a day, I am absolutely ADDICTED to this wonderful sport. :) I don't really have any weight to lose, I'm more looking to 'get fit', stay healthy, stay motivated, have time to myself, etc.

Thank you for reading this, everyone!!
Peace!! Thu, 4 Dec 2008 13:38:38 EST treadmill vs road running Hello, i need some advice. i am running my first 5k next week but I have only ran on the treadmill. My name is Tom and I run for the fun of it and to be outdoors. I typically try to run on trails 3-4 time a week and mix that with my mountain bike. I am curios about running and nutrition. I log in all my food intake everyday and eat around 2000c, I am trying to lose the fat on my stomach. Do I need to add more calories on the days I run?

Thanks

Tom Fri, 12 Sep 2008 22:11:53 EST Accuracy of Garmin Forerunner or similar product? Hi all,

From previous threads here it seems that several of you have one of these.

I was looking at Garmin's website today and saw that several of their gadgets let you set alarms so you know when you've gone a certain distance or have dropped below a certain speed. Does anyone know how accurate that is? Somehow getting up before 5 seems obscene...Do any of you do it? Tue, 12 Aug 2008 20:18:21 EST Any podrunner users? For anyone who uses podrunner, do you happen to know the equivalent of the bpm? Just wanted to give you a heads-up on what happened to a training buddy of mine at the gym today. She was jogging as usual on the treadmill and her hands started to itch. They soon broke out into a full-blown allergic reaction that started to works its way up her arms. She's better now-- the itching has stopped and the swelling is going down after going home and taking some Benedryl. We've been to this gym a million times and always clean our equipment, but I know for a fact MOS... Wed, 6 Aug 2008 19:00:10 EST Running in the Dark Hi all. I'm a teacher who has gotten back into a great routine that includes a 4 mile run. Summer is almost over & the only way I can keep this up is to run early early morning or late evening in the dark. I live in Vermont and will be running along both country dirt roads and along the side of a highway. Any suggestions for maximum visibility? I will eventually move to the treadmill in my basement, but I'm not ready yet! Mon, 4 Aug 2008 10:07:05 EST Does this injury sound familiar?!?! Ouch!! On Thursday, I was running sprints on my treadmill. About an hour later, I started feeling some pain in my lower leg, like a dull ache. It's still there. Yesterday morning, it wasn't bad at all and I didn't even notice it. Then I ran through the sprinkler with my 4 year old, and ouch!, there it was again. As the day progressed yesterday, it ached more, and I had a hard time walking last night.

It's hard to pinpoint where the aching is. It seems to be in my calf, and when I ...
