SparkPeople Too Young for Cancer Team Messageboard This group is open to anyone affected by cancer but targets cancer survivors diagnosed before age 35... Because, for many of us, living healthier means living cancer-free longer. SparkPeople Too Young for Cancer Team Messageboard Change a Letter Game How about a new game? In this game, the first poster picks a four letter word. The second poster posts a new word changing only one letter of the first word. For example, the first word is "slot". The second word could be "slow", "shot", "slat", or "blot", etc.

I'll get us started:

Form Mon, 30 Dec 2013 07:53:18 EST Welcome RACERCHIK! I've always felt I wasn't worth much and I tend to just be so negative on myself. Since this battle with cancer and seeing what I've been through, I've started adapting to the idea that maybe I am worth something. I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at age 16 and have been in remission for 8 years now. Cancer changed my life in many ways, and I'm so grateful for the lessons that I've learned from the experience. One of the side effects of my treatment was, contrary to many chemo recipients, weight gain. I've never been able to get the weight off, and have struggled with this for many yea... Mon, 29 Aug 2011 14:30:16 EST Early menopause Hello. I'm new here I was diagnosed with lymphoma, stage 3, in Nov 2009. After a year of lots of chemo and radiation, R/CHOP, RICE, Zevalin, and BEAM, I received a stem cell transplant. It has been 10 months now, and I've received confirmation that I'm post menopausal. This is very sad for me because I'm only 32 and I had hopes of starting a family. Now that will never be possible. Anyone else out there have early menopause? Sun, 28 Aug 2011 18:55:02 EST looking for support. Hello:)

My name is Jaclyn. I've joined this team to find support and motivation. I have had a tough go the past few years. My husband and I own our very own little restaurant. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Stage II in January of 2011. I just arrived back home from chemotherapy. Since January, I have gained a whopping 25 pounds! So, I am hoping to lose that soon! On a happy note, found out today my tumor in my chest cavity is shrinking! =) Wed, 18 May 2011 21:33:13 EST Melanoma I have a question for anyone who has suffered skin cancer, or knows anyone who has. Yesterday was the first really nice day outside, and I went out to plant some flowers and clean up the yard. I sprayed myself with SPF70 and wore a hat and covered up as much as possible, but I still got sunburn on my ears and cheeks. I am so scared of the cancer coming back. Does anyone have any advice, or do I just have to stay indoors for the rest of my life? Mon, 2 May 2011 10:53:24 EST Introducing Myself. . . Hello Everyone!

My name is Kim and at 22, I became a cancer survivor; more specifically, I became a survivor of Stage IVB Hodgkin's lymphoma. Currently, I'm 28 and have been in remission for 5 years. Yet, I find that cancer still effects my "new normal" life.

I hope, through this SparkTeam, to find inspiration on this path of maintaining good health and living life to the fullest as well as provide inspiration in kind. I'm new to this site. I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor back in Dec of 08. Somehow I was blessed and am still here. I finished treatment in Nov 09 and went back to work in Jan 10. I am still dealing with seemingly unending fatigue. The inactivity has caused me to gain some weight. I came here to track my food and exercise and perhaps chat with other folks going through this as well.

Anyone else have fatigue issues? How long do you think this will last? Also my finger nails are still purplish and peeling. I knew these were effects during chemo but my last treatment was in Dec. I thought this should have passed by now. I love dark chocolate.

Can you guess the lie? Thu, 11 Mar 2010 18:51:47 EST Confessions of an Olympics fanatic... I have to admit, I have been parked in front of the TV, watching as much of the Olympics as I can. My favorite events are the figure skating competitions, which, sadly, are over tonight. Least favorite event - curling.

Have you been watching? If so, what are your favorite and least favorite events? Fri, 26 Feb 2010 00:09:53 EST Introduce yourself 2010! Hello Everyone!

I am starting a new thread for member introductions for 2010! Please feel free to post as much or as little about yourself as you want. I'll start!

I am Dawn, one of the co-leaders of this team. I was diagnosed with triple negative inflammatory breast cancer in December of 2008, at the age of 36, and am still having chemo more than a year later.

Have joy!
306 Sat, 13 Feb 2010 17:14:11 EST scar tissue Do any of you have any issues with scars left over from cancer surgeries? I have had 4 surgeries on my abdomen, including a hysterectomy and a c-section (not in that order). Anyway, my surgery scar is really tight and I'm doing the best I can to get it stretched back out so my abs can heal and I can gain some strength. I am currently taking a hatha yoga class. Do you have any other suggestions/ tips for me? Wed, 10 Feb 2010 16:59:40 EST New cancer I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's B-Cell Lymphoma when I was 16. They found a large mass (about the size of a grapefruit) around my heart, lungs and arteries in my chest. I went through several months of chemotherapy and was lucky enough that it got it all. I have been in remission ever since. I am now almost 29.

Today I got results from my second Pap Smear. My first one in Oct came back abnormal so they wanted a repeat in Jan. The results show pre-cancerous cells. I have t... Wed, 10 Feb 2010 12:24:52 EST new here so no one every told me i would put on 100 pounds with cancer and stress and 2 pregancies later. now i am getting healthy and would like to put my weight no track. looking for friendships that are going the same direction as i am.
Nancye Fri, 29 Jan 2010 16:20:33 EST I'm new here! Hi, everyone. I'm so glad that I found this team! I am a 3 year survivor of ovarian cancer. I had a full hysterectomy at age 28, along with 6 chemo treatments of taxol & carboplatin. I did ok going through the process, but afterwards I was left with a nasty case of depression/PTSD. It seems like it has taken forever to get my energy back and I'm still very limited in the exercise that my doctors will allow. (yoga, walking, swimming) It has been difficult being menopausal and in my earl... Wed, 27 Jan 2010 17:41:49 EST Chemo and scans and transfusions! Oh my! We put our bodies through a lot in our quest to get better, especially with cancer. We take the chemo, which is poison. Have scans with dyes that make us radioactive. Is it any wonder that, after a while, the body screams for a break or some help? I've had 2 blood transfusions and an infusion of platelets in 2.5 weeks. Still, I carry on, persist, and strive to beat this thing. After all, rolling over and just letting cancer win is NOT an option. Wed, 20 Jan 2010 10:51:13 EST Goals for 2010! Better late than never...

What are your goals for 2010?

Mine is to maintain my weight. Although I am not the ideal size right now, my doctors have been concerned about the amount of weight I have lost during my treatments. So, my goal, at least for now is to maintain my current weight.

Please jump in and share your goals for 2010. Let the discussion begin! Tue, 12 Jan 2010 15:55:25 EST Getting Started again is rough, but good My husband knows very well that getting started has been rough for me, but now that I have started again, I am thinking to myself why did I ever stop! My legs were sore this morning but I did the routine anyway and I am so glad I did! I really didn't want to get out of bed, but knew that I had new goals to reach and 3 Marathons this year! I better get my but up and do this! Tue, 5 Jan 2010 07:03:21 EST New member! :) Hi, everyone...
I've been searching for a team that fits me best, and although I've tried to "move on" after cancer, I think this might be just what I need, physically - to lose this weight I'm struggling with - and emotionally - because lately I've been feeling like the stress of treatment is just now catching up with me.

I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, stage 2B, in 2007 at the age of 28. Large tumor in my right mediastinum. I went through six months of ABVD and... Mon, 21 Dec 2009 01:00:06 EST Anyone for a huddle? Hi Team! Anyone for a huddle? Tue, 15 Dec 2009 17:57:06 EST Sharing a cool video This video was produced by a hospital for breast cancer awareness. It is very cute.

Mon, 7 Dec 2009 17:23:24 EST Revving back up! Hello Everyone!

I've been MIA for a while and I want to apologize for that. Unfortunately, the chemo has caused neuropathy in my fingers, which makes it hard to type, so I haven't been on the computer too much...

That said, I am hoping to rev back up from now on and visit the team at least daily and spark some conversations around here.

I hope that everyone is well!

Have joy! Sat, 28 Nov 2009 22:16:37 EST new and loving it I started Spark People a week ago and I can't believe the support I have found on here. It's nice to know there are other cancer survivors dealing with more than one health issue (weight) and reading that it is a daily struggle like our current diagnosis can be. Thanks! 220 Fri, 30 Oct 2009 10:44:02 EST Newbie here :) Hi everyone! I am Christine and I'm new here. I was diagnosed at age 31 (4 years ago) with a rare form of uracheal cancer....not much is known about it, just that is very rare and very aggressive. I don't know why God chose me to get through it, but he did and I'm so far cancer free.

I am struggling to lose 30-35 pounds I gained all within 3 months of finishing chemo....has anyone else experienced this? I'm told it could be my body reacting to the chemical makeup that changes... Sun, 25 Oct 2009 16:53:54 EST Hi Everyone!! New to this site!! Hello, I am a 2 time Breast cancer survivor. It is time to start wrapping up our summers while looking forward to fall.

What are your aspirations for August? I fully intend to exercise more regularly. That is an ongoing goal for me. My hope, or aspiration, is to be completely tobacco-free by the middle of this month. Yeah, even with chemo, I've cheated - which is absolutely beyond dumb... Hoping to be smarter and healthier this month. Sun, 2 Aug 2009 00:25:00 EST Needing Lots of Help! I don't know what the problem is lately with my poor eating habits! What are your favorite outdoor activities?

I am going for 30 minute walks during my lunch break these days. Has anyone heard of the fasting before chemo study and actually tried it?

I just had a mastectomy and am waiting to talk to my oncologist about chemo, so I'm doing a bunch of research. I found some amazing new ideas and a study involving the wonderful effects of fasting before chemo doses. Basically, it seems counter-intuitive but mice actually were stronger and more likely to eat AFTER each dose of chemo when they fasted for 2 days BEFORE. The fasting seems to protect healthy cell... Woohoo! Mon, 1 Jun 2009 01:32:04 EST Hi! I am new to the team. I am so glad that I found this team! I was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2003 just 3 months after I had my twins. I had surgery and 12 rounds of chemo. As of today I am 6 years cancer free. Chemo really messed things up. After the treatments, I thought that I could eat whatever I wanted because I was glad to be alive. Now, it has been so hard to take the weight off. I lost 25 pounds 2 years ago, but gained it all back. I believe that SP will help me lose it this time and ke... Wed, 27 May 2009 11:37:39 EST Welcome LUKKA01, IN2IT4FUN, and STEVENH512! My husband informed me this morning that on one of the morning shows, there was a 10 year old diagnosed with Breast Cancer! I couldn't believe it, he also said something about the doctors not going to do radiation because they didn't want to damage the other breast. Does someone else have information on this story? I already put this in my blog, but I wanted to post here as well. I recently received a card from a person I don't know. Apparently, a friend of mine, known on Sparkpeople as JUNETWO, made a donation to one of her walks in my honor. The woman added my name to her websites and will be adding my name to her walk shirts. I cannot tell you how touched I am by this. I started to cry and made my family read the card several times over (they know I am sappy). Theoretically, I know that there a... Fri, 1 May 2009 18:24:10 EST Motivation for May! Hi Everyone! May is almost upon us. Have you thought about what your motivation for May is?

I am looking forward to completing my last two chemo treatments and moving on to the next step of getting well. Thu, 9 Apr 2009 20:26:34 EST Coping with Chemo Chemo puts a cramp in your lifestyle - big time. Let's make lemonade, so to speak, and share some of our tips and tricks to living well while having chemo.

Since chemo dries my skin out (a lot), I splurge on 100% shea butter for my skin. The one I buy is organic and has very little scent. It does wonders!

What are your tips? Questions are welcome, too! Wed, 8 Apr 2009 23:29:18 EST Small Victory I am very excited. Today I went to the hair salon and got my hair colored and styled. I can't remember the last time I did that. It's got to be about a year and a half now. For the first time in a very long time I look like I have a hair cut I intended to have, not something just growing in! There's still a long way to go until it looks like it used to, but I finally don't mind my hair and might be able to put my wigs away soon. 36 Sat, 4 Apr 2009 20:38:53 EST Let's get this party started! Hi Everyone!
I've been MIA since my last chemo and, for that, I apologize. I am hoping that everyone is doing well.

I figured since there hasn't been much action in the past few days, I would introduce a "party game." So, from A to Z, what are your favorite things to have at a party.

A - Appetizers!!!! (vegetarian, of course) Thu, 19 Mar 2009 17:14:31 EST Can You Help Our Team Reach its Goal? For the last 2 years our Team has participated in raising funds for St. Baldricks which is an organization where volunteers raise money for Childhood Cancer by shaving their heads. In 2007 our very own Sister Snowflake shaved her head raising only $40 due to the short notice for the event. Then last year, A member of Team Snowflake flew into PA from TX, to shave her head along side Snowflake herself and together raised over $1000 dollars for the event held in Edinboro Pa.
Well this year ... Thu, 12 Mar 2009 21:52:45 EST Procrastination Well, I have joined a new gym and went for the first time yesterday. It's one of those 24 hour gyms so I figure I have no excuses! I finally was honest with myself and my weight tracker and recorded my true weight - exactly 10 pounds heavier than I was last June... when I stopped logging into SparkPeople! I was diagnosed in December 2007 and went through 6 months of chemo, my last one being on June 19, 2008. During the course of the chemotherapy I gained 26 pounds. Thu, 22 Jan 2009 22:25:42 EST Newbie Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas. I am 36, which is a bit older than your stated target population, but when I saw the name of the group, it just felt like it fit. I have inflammatory breast cancer, stage IIIB, I believe. The information they have been giving me has been very good, but, as you all know, sometimes it is all just a blur. I am going to have my second chemo treatment next week Tuesday. I am glad I found this team. Wed, 21 Jan 2009 23:01:46 EST We Need More Team Leaders! In order to make this great team more great and as active as it should be, we need more team leaders. I'm a new member Hi all,

I'm a new member. My boyfriend is 22 and was diagnosed with Stage III stomach cancer back in May ('08). This is a very deadly cancer and very rare for his age. At one point he was given around a 3% chance of a cure; now his outlook has improved and he is on chemotherapy every day until at least January. His hard work and great attitude have inspired me to want to train for a half-marathon (and maybe someday a real marathon or triathlon) in his honor and to help cancer fundr... Thu, 27 Nov 2008 15:09:53 EST Childhood Cancer Awareness Month So, as a mom of a 3 year old with leukemia I feel it is my "duty" to remind everyone that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. I was diagnosed in August 2005, when I was 26 with stage 2B invasive dutal breast cancer. I've had a modified radical mastectomy and going in for my third attempt of reconstruction next month. Wishing myself luck...again, lol! I, as I'm sure a lot of you, didn't have any of reason to get b.c. They can't figure out how or why. The only thing I could possibly contribute it to, and one the many causes, is being slightly over weight the majority of my life and I've gained 40... My name is Audrey and I was unexpectedly diagnosed with a rare type of ovarian cancer (germ cell ovarian cancer) when I was 23 years old. I went through 2 surgeries (one to remove a giant cyst from my left ovary and one to remove the ovary) and then I had a 12 week round of chemo. I had to go to the hospital every day to get treatment. Well, PHASE 1 is behind me - next week will be one week. I posted on here months ago about how I was trying to get into good shape for this surgery. The good news was, my very good cardio health (from exercising) really helped I think in my progress so far - the doctor is pleased with how fast I am recovering. The bad news was that I didn't lose much before the operation, which was why I joined Spark in the first place :(

But... I am now losing weight. Even though I can only shuff... Tue, 1 Jul 2008 11:44:49 EST Hi, I'm new! My name is Tracey & I just found this team this morning. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999 shortly before my 27th birthday. I am happy that they were able to remove the cancer, but am unhappy about the weight that I have gained since then.

I recently had my eyes opened by my father and his situtation and am serious about losing this weight. I am hoping that in doing so, I will ensure my not having the same lifestyle choices that my father has made.

I am anxi... Fri, 27 Jun 2008 10:06:15 EST the begining of treatment Okay so two weeks down and I have done pretty well. The nausea and vomiting has landed me in the ER twice for severe dehydration and the mouth sores have sucked but other then that not too bad. I am still coaching and school and work but the doc thinks I should cut back slightly as so to not over do it and keep my ANC and WBC up. My moms mom had breast ca in her 40's. I smoked for 17 years an... Sat, 14 Jun 2008 00:10:17 EST Does cancer discriminate? Correct me if I am wrong... but I'm pretty sure that there are no men on our team! Not that I am wishing for more people to join our group... because in order to be part of our team... that also means that we've all dealt with some terrible stuff... However, I am wondering, does SP have less male members in general? Even though I belong to quite a few of them, I don't look around on the other team pages all that often. Let me know what your other teams look like! Thu, 12 Jun 2008 00:21:36 EST It's official [sort of] I have lost 20 pounds! I say sort of because according to the tracker on SP it's only 19... but according to my gym scale, I have lost 20 since the first day I stepped foot in the gym. It amazes me to see this number because although I feel that I have accomplished great things, I'm not sure that I feel like I have lost 20 pounds. I still have "fat" days and it makes me wonder... How did I not realize that I was letting myself get out of control? When I feel that my accomplishments are s... I went to the doc on friday thinking maybe I have a cold or something. He could not put his finger on it but to be safe he drew blood and my worst fears have began. I got a call that night and he tells me I am going to have to come see him on monday because my white cell count is through the 45,000. noe for those of you who know my story you know I had Acute lymphoblasic leukemia as a teen. the biggest signs of it are high whi... Sun, 8 Jun 2008 12:22:09 EST Aromatase Inhibitors I have been reading a lot about these aromatase inhibitors; medication that decreases the body's actual production of estrogen. I have read that a patient may be put on these inhibitors after they are finished with Tomoxifen - which works by sheilding the cells from absorbing the estrogen and its harmful effects. Is anyone from the team taking these or does anyone have more information? Do you know if these are perscribed in all age groups or do you have any information related to pre-meno... Thu, 5 Jun 2008 12:46:59 EST Let's huddle! Alright, this challenge forum is new for our team so I thought that I would start small. Lets see how often we can huddle with our team! I know that I am not checking the page every day but I don't think that I have been on here when anyone else has huddled.

If you have any ideas for a challenge feel free to create a new topic and post them... Lets have some fun with this! Thu, 5 Jun 2008 12:42:51 EST What did you do for exercise today? We all know that a major part of weight-loss sucess is exercise! Sometimes the hardest thing about exercising is finding the motivation! I thought that if we could all share the different types of activities that we are doing, maybe we could encourage one another to get out and try something new! Thu, 5 Jun 2008 12:33:39 EST *~TEAM GOALS~* We have a new team goal!! Please make sure that you are tracking the amount of water that you drink so that we can reach our goal! Tue, 27 May 2008 10:46:49 EST MIA I would like to apologize for being MIA for the last month or so. I would like to say that I have some good excuse or reason... but I really don't. I am sure that we can all relate, life took over and I got busy and forgot about SparkPeople! I did not however, fall of the rocker completely; I have still been able to maintain my fitness and weight loss goals. I hope all of you are doing just as well!

Welcome to all of the new members that I have not been here to greet personally... Tue, 27 May 2008 10:42:36 EST prayers please I go in on monday for my yearly checkup to be sure the cancer has not come back this includes a CBC and a bone marrow biopsy and some other test. I am not so much worried about it being back as I am sure I would feel it or have some kind of indication from doc visits or er visits but I worry about the Bone marrow biopsy it puts stress on my body and sends my blood sugars through the roof thus causing me to have to get my blood sugar back in check.

also I have a relay for life even... Sat, 12 Apr 2008 19:24:06 EST The Taste of Chemo (Eating After Cancer) Hey everyone! First off, congrats to those of you fighting the fight or holding tight to that wonderful r word (remission). I was wondering, for those of you who've had the lovely pleasure of chemotherapy, have you noticed that months after treatment your taste buds have changed?

There were few foods I was positive about during treatment and now that I'm three months past treatment I find that my taste buds are totally different. Suddenly, I'm craving more sour foods and I'm int... Sun, 6 Apr 2008 19:15:36 EST CANCER SUCKS!! I hate to state the obvious but we all know that cancer sucks! So, thanks to a suggestion from Cindy, I have created a place for us all to vent!! I have noticed other teams doing things like setting challenges for one another. If you have any ideas please post them here!! Wed, 12 Mar 2008 18:03:07 EST Where are we from? Well, I created this group just about 2 months ago and I can't believe how fast we have grown - we are up to 21 members now! As we are adding more members, it gets harder and harder to check out everyone's individual spark pages. I am curious as to where everyone is from so please take a moment and post your location :) Wed, 12 Mar 2008 17:58:03 EST Hello New Members Hello all, I am hoping to recruit some new members very soon! As a young cancer survivor myself I have learned that many factors influence my weight loss success that my friends do not have to face. I am hoping that this team will help to take young cancer survivors one step closer to their weight loss goals. Shortly before my 21st birthday, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After 6 months of chemo and 7 weeks of radiation, I barely recognized myself when I looked into the mirror. Now,... Sun, 13 Jan 2008 01:49:45 EST
