Hi all -- I'm noticing that it seems to have been quite some time since there have been posts in this forum. I'm guessing that folks are migrating over to other SparkTeams with questions and comments as they grow into more experienced runners, and I'm wondering if this SparkTeam is still serving a purpose. Would it make sense to fold this Team into another, more active one? If so, which one or ones would be most appropriate, do you think?

Wed, 19 Sep 2012 08:49:10 EST Graduated to 10K I just finished my 1st 10K, the Atlanta Peachtree Road Race.
I was a BLAST!!!---Now, I'm hooked and am scouting out another 10K for near year's end.

365 232 252 Sun, 8 Jul 2012 17:17:42 EST What is your goal for the month of July My goal for July is to walk everyday of each week and keep track of how many steps I get in at the end of the month. I've been training and am up to jogging 4 minutes to walking 1 minute, so I think I'm okay, except that I haven't been jogging up any hills, and I know that the course is a bit hilly. I'm thinking that I'll try walking the hills and jogging the rest, but I'm afraid of overdoing it and not being able to jog through to the end. I'm also worried about how much I should train before Thurs? Should I keep training or rest until then? Mon, 25 Apr 2011 09:54:21 EST New to team, running first 5K in a few weeks! Hello out there! I've been training since the first of the year and hope to run my first 5K soon, but I'm worried that I'll still be jogging 4 minutes/walking one. Is this okay in a real 5K? Or will I look silly and like a newbie? I'm not sure I want to run a 5K if I'm actually jogging really slow and walking part of it. What's the verdict of the team out there? Thanks for your input!! ~Angela Sun, 10 Apr 2011 08:23:46 EST Hello from Nashville! I'm new to the team, and will be running my second 5k this Saturday, April 2nd. Last night, while running a couple miles, I noticed a dull ache on my left foot. It's at the side of my foot, but along the top of the foot (if that makes sense)...almost in front of my ankle on the top side of my foot. Once I finished running, the discomfort went away. I never gave it a second thought.

Then came this AM. I did a cardio DVD workout, and had no foot pain associated with it. But about 3 hours after my workout, I got a shooting pain in my foot whenever I walked on it.... Thu, 10 Jun 2010 12:28:35 EST WOOOOHOOO!! Hello Everyone, I am new to the team but not to Spark. Lame, I know :D My budget is such that I can't take classes at a gym or train there either, but since I have the running shoes, the Polar HRM and an iPod, I figure why not hoist myself up from the couch (well, from in front of the computer in my case) and actually push past week 2 now that the weather is all nice here in Finland again? Can't see a reason why not, so here I am. Hope I can help motivate ... Sat, 15 May 2010 12:30:19 EST I'm a runner now. So today I went to my 2nd half marathon of the year. I am just starting to train for a 5k which is in a month. I have never been in a race before and was wondering what a good time for the distance would be. I think if i can get a ball park range it will make training easier because I will have a goal to work towards. Tue, 4 May 2010 19:57:48 EST Walking my first 5K I have a goal to be able to run a 5K to Defeat Domestic Violence within the next year. I watched the Biggest Loser the other night and was inspired and even though I am extremely overweight, I want to walk one May 8 to benefit the Amarillo Adult Literacy Council. To be honest I am afraid of what people will think of me. The people that are going to be there are those that have run them before and are pretty much in shape. Any thoughts or encouragement on how to overcome this fear? Thanks... Thu, 29 Apr 2010 10:14:58 EST Running my first 5k on saturday!! I am running my first 5k this saturday and am so excited. I've been working really hard. One question, I read somewhere on here that they don't let you use an ipod/mp3 during races??????? Is that true? Or is it just certain races? I would think something like that would be listed on the race info, right? If I can't have music, I don't know if i can do it! I have to have music and it has to be loud, don't really like to hear myself breath or my feet hit the ground :) Wed, 28 Apr 2010 21:15:52 EST Training for first race I have been debating running a 5k in a month or so. I have run before but never a consistent three miles. Do you guys have any advice on how to train for this type of race? I've been doing the SP thing for a few months... have been seeing lots of progress... and figured this would be a great motivation to do something I've always feared/wanted - run a 5K. I've signed up for one two days after my birthday (Komen Race for the Cure - DC, June 5) and have invited friends/coworkers/spouse to run (or run/walk) with me. Mon, 12 Apr 2010 21:33:29 EST Hi from VA Hi everyone, I'm Brandy. I just signed up for my first official running 5k, I'll be doing it on April 24th and since I haven't been really running in over a year this could be interesting, but I thought there was no better way to get back in to it than to throw myself into it. Sun, 11 Apr 2010 19:13:14 EST Hello from St. Louis! Hi, my name is Mary, I'm a 43 year old married mom of three little boys. Just to put it in perspective, I'm about 5'6" and weigh a touch under 230. I started running about 3 years ago, starting with a couch to 10K plan (which as slow as I run was really only about a 7K plan, but hey, I could run for an hour!)

Anyway, I let myself get out of the habit and now I'm getting myself back in! I'm 5 weeks into the same 13 week plan I did in the past, and so far so good. I just signed u... Wed, 7 Apr 2010 22:09:04 EST 5k Plano Texas Thinking of entering a first in Plano texas May 1. I am starting to get frustrated! Tue, 6 Apr 2010 09:58:28 EST Hello from North Dakota! Hi I was planning on running my first 5K race on April 17th.
I have been doing cardio like the Elliptical Trainer at the YMCA since October.
This was my third week of actual 5K training...
Two days ago, Day 1 of my 3rd week, I was jogging outside on a path that goes along a river. I didn't want to ... Thu, 1 Apr 2010 10:53:39 EST Hi - 2nd 5K in June Hi everyone!
I did the Adidas Women's 5K Challenge last year in Hyde Park, London. I wasn't serious about weight loss or exercise then so I only walked it. Still proud I did it of course. I did it for the National Deaf Children's Society.

I have just signed up for Race For Life at the Eden Project in Cornwall this June. I really want to be able to jog/run this one! Sat, 13 Mar 2010 21:46:50 EST Running my first 5k This weekend I will be running in my first 5k. I am a nervous wreck. I have been training for 5 weeks and still can't run the whole time. I could you some words of advise and encouragement. I signed up and didn't tell a soul as I was afraid I would back out. But I haven't and I am not, but.........what if I come in LAST!!!!!!! :-) Fri, 12 Mar 2010 17:35:20 EST Warrior Dash as a start? Has anyone heard of this race? It's not a 5K, it's 3.08 miles but includes 12 obstacles (mud run, cargo net, etc.). I'm not a "runner". I do the elliptical for 4-6 miles four times a week - but I'm not sure that is going to be enough training. The race is 5 weeks from tomorrow. I've never compete in anything before, am I crazy to do this first? Ugh, I'm just getting nervous. I initially signed up for this so that I would have a goal. 5 weeks to go... what have I gotten myself into????? Sun, 7 Mar 2010 04:16:09 EST So, Are Your Legs SUPPOSED to Turn to Jello? Sat, 20 Feb 2010 08:16:57 EST Treadmill Cross-Training Challenge As runners we all know the importance of doing a bit of cross training to work other muscles, or the same ones differently. This is why I thought of sharing this fun challenge with you guys.

The rules are:
Run .64 of a mile on a treadmill increasing your speed as you go. Sun, 24 Jan 2010 09:02:02 EST Pushing for 5K Hi There,

I just recently joined the 5K team. My first goal was to run 1.5 mi but then i realized that wasn't a very thought out goal because i have to be able to run that for my career. So i started working for a better time at completing the 1.5mi. Now i am set on a 5K. I can usually complete a 5K when switching from walk to jog. So my new goal is to be able run a 5K the entire way through. Thu, 21 Jan 2010 19:31:32 EST New to Spark Hi...I am new to SparkPeople (about 2 weeks in) and a dream of mine is to run a 5K. Mon, 7 Dec 2009 00:22:50 EST Off-Season Training This probably isn't so much for those fortunate to live in the southern 1/3 or so of the country, but for the rest of our team members, what are you doing between now and the more favorable running weather of spring? Where I live there are a few holiday-themed runs around Christmas and New Year's but then it seems like nothing until St. Patrick's day -- not that I'd be entering a 5K in our winter anyway. Mon, 26 Oct 2009 09:29:03 EST Completed my FIRST 5K Today and OH SO HAPPY! I just ran my first 5k today. I used C25K up to week 6. Then I got a job and my training became spotty as I was busy and caught office sicknesses. I still wanted to participate in a 5k for what would have been graduation. I'm happy to report that although it hurt and my knees are aching, I finished with a time of 35:30. I had never ran over 20 minutes before that and I am completely over the moon. I also can't WAIT to do it again and better my time! Sun, 25 Oct 2009 22:34:36 EST Hip pain Every time I do my 3 mile run my hips hurt. I walked it, non-stop, with no problem in 60mins. Not bad for a first time and I look forward to improving it every week 209 I did hurt my foot tho. It's hard to describe where it's at but I have a feeling it's cuz I need new shoes. It hurts mostly when I'm barefooted and walk. If I tiptoe it doesn't hurt so I'm assuming it's probably something to do with my arch. ... Thu, 1 Oct 2009 11:27:12 EST New To The Group - First Summer For 5K's Hi all -

I was looking for a group of people who run 5K's and I found you all! I just started running them this summer and I'm SO happy I did! I love it!

I've always been a "kind-of" runner. I played soccer and was a cheerleader in HS. Yes we ran hard for cheerleading too. I was always one to push it and be ahead of the pack. I always wanted to be the best. After HS I never ran consistantly, although I'd run on and off through college and beyond. I still push to be the ... Mon, 28 Sep 2009 21:11:39 EST New... and doing first 5k in a month. Advice? Hey! I just joined sparkpeople yesterday. I've been running every day with my trainer and I'm hoping to run my first 5k on 10/24/09. Any tips to give a newbie?? I'm nervous but determined. I'm hoping that joining this group will help me further my goal of being able to run a 5K. I have walked a 5K once, many yrs ago, and enjoyed it completely. Now that I'm really looking to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle I want to incorporate events that will help me stay healthy and active. I started doing a walk/jog program that I put together myself. Nothing elaborate - I walked 9mins and jogged 1 min 3 times equaling 30 mins 4 to 5 times a week. After a few d... Fri, 25 Sep 2009 17:08:08 EST new to the team Hi everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I started running for the first time a few months ago using the couch to 5k program. When I first started I could barely run for a minute straight and now can go for 30 minutes on a treadmill at a pace of 5.5 mph! I've never run a 5k but hoping to do so by next Spring. Would first love to increase my speed so I can do a 10 minute mile, something I was never able to do years ago in high school. Mon, 21 Sep 2009 09:02:40 EST 5 K in a week.... I'm not ready I've been training for a 5 k for almost 4 months now but three weeks ago I moved to a new city, and caught the flu so have been out of comission. In the last three weeks I've run only twice and once I was really out of breath...
I know that this is the last run before next spring so I really want to try it - and it will be my first too but now that I'm healthy I have just one week to get ready and don't really know where to start! Sun, 20 Sep 2009 09:41:51 EST Completed 2 OF 4 MILE RUN BUT PROUD!!!! I am only in Week three of the 'Couch to 5k" program. However, I was determined not to run alone this Saturday. Yesterday, my town's running club had a 4 mile race. I knew i would not be able to run 4 miles, but i wanted to be among avid runners. I made a deal with myself that i would complete at least 1 mile. I made it to the 1 mile mark and then back. I did it. 2 whole miles. I ran, then I walked for 90 seconds when i was tired. Then I ran for 3 minutes then walked for 90 seconds and ... Sun, 20 Sep 2009 09:31:30 EST Brand Spankin' New My name is Erin and I'm in Northern California. I'm new to SP and new to running - Or at least the dream of being able to run.
My ultimate goal would be to run the Boston Marathon. People laugh at me (especially people who know me), but it will happen. Oh yes, it will happen.
Baby steps. I need to walk before I can run. Being fat and lazy is a hard habit to break. So... I think I'll take a walk around the block today. Fri, 18 Sep 2009 12:12:41 EST Shin Splints I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions about shin splints. I did a little more running yesterday along with my walk and today my shins are hurting. I did a little stretching before I went warmed up with a 5 min walk and then alternated between walking and running (C25K) did a cool down walk and stretched when I got home. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. Thank you :) Thu, 17 Sep 2009 12:12:02 EST podcast music for C25K I just wanted to share this link with all of you. Sun, 30 Aug 2009 10:40:37 EST Just Joined this team! Hi everyone, I just joined this team, because running 5k seems like a good goal to get to. At this point I have about 75lbs to get rid of, and I'm walking 1/2 hr a day. I am thinking it's time to take it up to a new level.

I have no idea, never having run before, how to do this, but with your guidance and support, I feel confident taht I can.

thanks everyone! Mon, 24 Aug 2009 13:32:46 EST New to the team... Hi!

I just found this team while reading a blog from one of the members. I am preparing to run either a 5K or 10 K in October- the last one I ran was 10 years ago. I am not a natural runner, but I always liked the satisfaction of finishing a good run. I also know that running (or in my case, jogging) is an exercise that has a lot of value for the time put in. I have been jogging about 3 times a week 3 miles each time on trails behind my home. I am struggling with the worries of jog... Sat, 22 Aug 2009 19:50:01 EST Hi, I just joined the team Yesterday I set a goal to become a runner again. It's been 20+ years since I have described myself as a runner. In high school I ran cross country and loved it. Some years later I hurt my knee playing soccer and it killed me to run. I'm hoping that doesn't rear its ugly head on me again.

I'll start the C25k program tomorrow. Question: Do you run on a treadmill, on the road, a track, or all of the above?

Tue, 18 Aug 2009 11:10:04 EST Hello Hi everyone. I am a newbie to running/jogging and to motivate myself I am considering signing up for a 5K run on Thanksgiving Day.
I am on week 3 of a 6 week C25K pogram (been there for a while!), and am excited because I think I am actually close to being able to run/jog a whole mile non stop. Just started running again (like this morning)! Decided to start with a 5 K and then do a 1/2 marathon next year.
I have done 5K, 1/2 marathons, and even the LA marathon before, but then life got in the way and I stopped training.
But I'm back and ready to do this! I downloaded the c25K podcast last night and did my first day this morning. My 5K is 8 weeks away....wish me luck! I really want to complete it in under 30 mins too!
I look forward to getting to know you all! Mon, 20 Jul 2009 19:31:44 EST 5K in October Hi, I'm Christina and I plan on running my first 5K in October. I've never run a 5K before, but I've always wanted to. The furthest I've run at one time is about 2 miles, but I haven't been able to repeat it since. I think I've been too tired and haven't been drinking enough water. I live in Chicago, so it can be really humid at 7am. I am open to any suggestions and tips on how to successfully complete a 5K. Thanks! Sun, 19 Jul 2009 21:26:06 EST Day Before the Day Before the Race Sounds pretty good doesn't it, except I'm really only racing myself. I have a 7 mile "foot race" coming up Saturday, which I plan to walk/run. But I want to have good endurance and do as much of it as a run as possible (not just a fast walk). I ran this morning for an hour (about 1/2 running and 1/2 at a brisk walk), and got in 3-1/2 miles. I'm thinking that tomorrow should be a rest day and am wondering if there is anything special you would do, food wise, the day before. I'm a total beginne... Thu, 9 Jul 2009 16:10:24 EST Need some encouragement! I signed myself up for a 7 mile fun run this Saturday. Two years ago I walked it and came in with a time of 2:45 yes that's two hours 45 minutes, ladies and gentlemen! Now I know I can do better, at least I think I can run for part of it (I walked the whole thing two years ago) but I am feeling a little nervous. Any words of encouragement would be welcome, and especially any strategies for keeping my spirits up. The previous time I walked with a buddy and this time I'll be alone in the crowd ... Thu, 9 Jul 2009 02:03:49 EST The Road to a Half-Marathon Ok, so every year I volunteer at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN. Every year I go to the Health Expo and sign up for free entries.. always saying that if I won an entry to the half marathon, I'd do it... Well, this year I guess was my year. I got the call last Monday saying that I'd won a half-marathon entry! GREAT! Ugh... now I have to do it. Granted, my plan is NOT to actually run the whole thing, but to just complete it!

So, on Friday my cousins called me to see if I wanted to... Mon, 29 Jun 2009 21:55:11 EST How can you tell you are ready for an official 5K? I am currently walking 3.5 miles 3 times a week, and have slowly added jogging. I jog until my breathing becomes difficult, walk for a bit, and then resume jogging. Up to 1.2 miles of the 3.5 mile is jogging. The fastest I've completed the whole 3.5 is in 45 minutes.
Should I be able to do the whole 3.5 jogging/running before I sign up for a 5K?
What have you all done? I just joined the team today. I signed up for my first 5K in September with a friend who has done plenty of runs (she is actually doing the NY Marathon this year). I just started. I can't run a 5K yet. I don't care if I walk half of it. As long as I do it! My plan is to run intervals. Right now I'm doing 2 minute intervals of walk/jog at 3.5mph/4.5mph. I made up a timeline that puts me at 1 min walk at 3.8mph/5 min jog at 5mph by the time September rolls around. I hope... Sat, 21 Mar 2009 21:35:34 EST I am new to 5k My name is Mike, I am married and 1 teenage kid 16. In fact today is my 29th year anniversery. I have been running on the treadmill for about 3 years. the more weight I lose the longer I can run on the treadmill. I thought I would try to run a 5k on the treadmill this past week and see how I could do. I surprised myself and I ran the whole time without stopping to walk and I did it in 35:40. I was so proud of myself.

I have attempted to run 5k on the treadmill before but always had... Sat, 21 Mar 2009 13:09:33 EST Hello!!! Hi!
I am just starting to run 5K. So far I have jogged three on my own and I have a 5K fun run next weekend :) Mon, 16 Mar 2009 11:26:45 EST HI I'm new and getting ready to start Couch to 5K Hi everyone...I got my new running shoes this weekend. I walked my route to make sure I know exactly where I'm going and my Ipod is ready with the Podcast. I'm nervous, but excited about running. Thanks! Mon, 9 Mar 2009 16:31:08 EST Running After an 18 Year Break About 18 years ago, I ran some road races (5K, 5 Mile, 10K) but stopped as other things in life got in the way. My physical at the beginning of the year (it was about 6 years overdue) was a real wakeup call. I had ballooned to 260 pounds (I was around 180 in my running days) and had blood pressure issues. I discovered SparkPeople and started making changes to the way I lived. Part of it was exercising everyday. At the beginning, most of it was on the treadmill at home that I burned out after ... Sun, 8 Mar 2009 23:07:08 EST My First!! I completed my first 5k on Saturday (3/7). It was the APSO Power Run near my hometown. Not only was it my first but it was an inaugural event, so that was kinda neat. About 200 runners/walkers.

My only goal was to run the whole thing and I did! I was so excited! i really had no idea how long it would take me since I've not been running 3 miles long and I ditched the watch a couple of weeks ago on my runs. I told my wife that if I finished in 30-35 minutes I would be a happy... Sun, 8 Mar 2009 22:21:25 EST I walked in my first 5k today!!!! Susan G. Komen 5 I had a great time! But I must admit that it was one of the most physical things I have done! The distance wasn’t the problem for me but the race was on the LSU campus and that sucker is full of hills and the road full of holes. So that took a toll on me. Another thing that I wasn’t use to is passing up people. People would just stop dead in their tracks for whatever reason so I had to dodge them, then I would get behind a wall of ppl going slow so when a hole opened I had to take it, runnin... Sat, 7 Mar 2009 19:47:32 EST I did it! I completed my 1st 5K this morning. I kept putting off doing one and kept signing up for the 1 mile fun runs instead, but this time my 6 year old wanted to do the 5K. I figure -- why not, now's my chance. Needless to say running with a 6 year old is not fun, but we finished in 45 minutes. I probably would have done 30 minutes, but I had to keep walking, stopping (at one point carrying) and waiting on her. I had a lot of fun, I think it will be easier for other runs now that the initial ... Sat, 7 Mar 2009 17:04:45 EST New here, Ready to run a 5k. Hi My name is Kristie, I'm married with 3 children.

I recently completed the C25K program on Friday 2/27/09. I was only able to run 2.6 miles in the 30 minutes on my last run. BUT I'm still so excited that I completed it. I was ready to quit in week 1 and I pushed and pushed and made it through and Now I'm a RUNNER, I'm a Runner, that feels so good.

Hoping to meet some friends and get helpful hints and tips on how to be the best runner I can.

Here's to Run... Thu, 5 Mar 2009 13:42:52 EST How many days a week do you run? I was running 5 or 6 days a week. I noticed that when I alternate days between running and lower impact cardio like cycling that I'm able to run further and faster. Sun, 1 Mar 2009 21:25:30 EST Really Want To Make It Happen In 2009 Hi Everyone! Just finished reading all the posts and am excited to be part of such an encouraging group of folks! I am the working mother of 3 great kids. I am just starting my journey through the 40's and it's time to starting checking things off my life list. One is to run a 5K. I'm new to this team and I'm so excited to be here. This afternoon I'm going to go and run my Wk1 Day2 of my Couch to 5K training. I was so encoraged when I finished my run on Tuesday. Wed, 25 Feb 2009 08:07:36 EST Hello all! Hey everyone. I am just finding this team and am excited. I am working to run my first 5K on May 9. I NEVER thought I would like to run, but I am loving the challenge of finding out how much I can do. Three years ago, I set out to lose weight and found sooooo much more in the process. I am a married, working mom, over 40 and discovering this for the first time. A late bloomer, I guess. I am looking forward to getting tips and support from experienced and beginning runners. Sun, 22 Feb 2009 10:12:05 EST My First 5k I am so excited to say that I ran my first 5k today. I ran a time of 39:17. I think I did pretty good for my first time considering that I thought it would have taken me alot longer to finish. I am so pumped right now. I can't wait for my next one. I am able to run close to 1 mile almost 1 1/2 miles without stopping...then I do a run/walk. Good luck to those of you getting ready for your first 5k run. Best of luck. It is awesome and such a great feeling crossing that finish line. WOOHOO!!!!! Sat, 21 Feb 2009 21:01:17 EST Newbie Hey there, I am just starting out. My kids will have no problem running the whole thing. They are 9 and 7! I am very proud of them. I know that I can walk it but I am trying to build up a bit of endurance between now and then so that I will be able to run some of it. Hopefully this will be the first in many races for us to complete together. Sun, 1 Feb 2009 21:27:40 EST Hi everyone! I'm new I have started running and am up to 2 miles so far. There is a 5k in February, but I might wait until the April one. What do you think? Wed, 28 Jan 2009 12:12:50 EST running makes me hungry! Hi y'all-
I am new here! I started running last summer, and have been working my way up with the ultimate goal of running a 5 mile race in June. Right now, I can run about 2.5 miles, so I'm getting there despite this cold weather.
My biggest problem however is that running makes me super super hungry.
I try and eat a small snack about an hour before I run, something to just get me going.
My problem is after I run, I cook dinner, I end up overeating, and I'm starving for th... I am so excited! My best friend and walking buddy is going to do it with me. We walk every morning since September after putting our boys on the school bus. It should be a lot of fun and a great motivation to keep walking and exercising. Part of the reason for doing this is also knowing that I will be in front of and with so many people. It is a good kick in the butt after New Years to get in better... Fri, 16 Jan 2009 08:29:26 EST New Training Plan I have started a new plan. I am 23.5 weeks along and still running, YEAH for me and baby! The number one item on my list of baby gear is a jogging stroller, but I am clueless. I've been running consistently since September. I usually run outside but I recently joined a gym because the weather hasn't been ideal (I live in Michigan..). All of the sudden I'm getting shin splints. I'm not running any more than I was before. I'm just running on a treadmill instead of pavement. What's going on? What should I do? Fri, 2 Jan 2009 22:03:23 EST Hello I used to run a lot at the gym but quit and regret it. Ive been wanting to do a 5k for a long time and never got around to it. I have goals set up, and one of them is to participate in a 5K the end of June. So what better place to me a part of a group than with other peole who want to do the same things. I would love a shirt with that on it. Just to say that I can run a 5k would be nice. In the mean time I'm walking them. My best time is 46.01 which is a 5 minute improvement from my first one. I'm making progress. I'm looking forward to reading how you all are making progress and which races you run.

I've been doing a 5k a month. Todays is New year... Wed, 31 Dec 2008 07:40:09 EST Hi Everyone! Hello all - just found your team, hoping I can join. I just signed up for my first 5K - it's Feb 8, 2009. I ran 3.1 miles on the treadmill for the first time a few weeks ago, and have been wanting to run a 5K race for some time now. I have 5 full weeks to train (5.5 if I get my butt to the gym this week) and am trying to decide if I should add strength training & interval training to my 5K program. I plan to use the cool running podcasts from the couch to 5k to gear up for the race - pick... Wed, 31 Dec 2008 00:36:38 EST 5K in the Detroit area? It's my goal to run a 5k sometime this spring. Do any of you know any 5k races in the Detroit area coming up this spring? It would be more motivational for me if the race was for charity. Thanks! Thu, 25 Dec 2008 16:25:39 EST Hey! I'm new. I've just recently started running. I have asthma and running is a pretty big challenge for me which is why I have avoided it for so long.

I've been trying to lose weight for 3 years or so. I've tried a lot of different cardio workouts and nothing seemed to work for me. Over the summer I got rid of my gym membership because I was out of town for work and I wasn't able to use it anyway. This September I decided to try running because it didn't require paying for a gym membersh... Tue, 23 Dec 2008 23:18:49 EST Newbie to group!!! I just signed up for my first 5K today and I'm excited! I cant wait but I'm also very nervous...I added running a mile to my work out last week...1st time was 17 mins, 2nd 15, and then yesterday I did 14 mins 10 seconds...Improvement and reminder of how I used to feel running cross country in high school.
I live in South Dakota so I'm doing my running inside on a treadmill for now. Tue, 23 Dec 2008 17:59:08 EST Hello! I have been meaning to take up running for about 6 month now. I have everything except the motivation!

I did try once and within my first 1 min fast pace interval i nearly died! Well, it wasn't quite so dramatic as that, but i couldn't go any further needless to say :(

My chest was in agony and i have been quite dishearted since... It wasn't just be being out of breath, but it being really painful to breathe.

I don't smoke or have any breathing issues, i'm jus... Thu, 18 Dec 2008 14:07:20 EST hi hi Ive decided that I am going to run a 5K in spring its a bit ambitious for me as I have only just started jogging and can currently job for a max of 8 mins! But I am determined to do it and have set myself a mini goal of jogging for 10 mins by christmas! Tue, 16 Dec 2008 07:31:03 EST beat my personal record I was on the treadmill for 60 minutes and was able to do my 3 miles in under 20 minutes - this is a great accomplishment - I walk 5 and run 2 minutes - so I actually ran for a total of 16 minutes and finished in 59 minutes - but great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together (Vincent Van Gogh).

Whereas a 20 minute mile to some may not be a accomplishment - it is to me and my short penguin legs (lol).

Keep moving forward 198</... Thu, 11 Dec 2008 09:25:17 EST Hello I just started walking/running and am training to run a 5K in spring - but I am a penguin - if anyone has heard about that - Its a great book for beginners who are starting to run - Its called the courage to Start by John "Penguin" Bingham. Great book very encouraging. Glad to be here and good luck to all. Jess 213 Tue, 9 Dec 2008 15:47:21 EST My First 5K I did it! I ran/walked in the Jingle Bell 5K. I have been wanting to do one for a long time. I finished at 50:35 but I did finish and I am happy that I did the race. I now know what I need to do to make my time better. I am working on the next one which will be in Feb. 2009. It was just fun being there among all the runners and knowing I could do it. Mon, 8 Dec 2008 16:57:53 EST If you run too much, can't you plateau?? I want to do a 5k in March. I have looked at the couch to 5k program. My question is do you run the risk of Plateauing if you run all the time?? Or if your only doing it 3 times a week, and something else 2 times a week, is that enough of a change??? Sun, 7 Dec 2008 15:05:28 EST Asics I've officially run my Asics gel-1120's to the ground and am in serious need of a new pair. I've been through Nikes, Brooks, New Balance and then I found Asics and fell in love! I really want a new pair and am wondering if anyone has a specific model they recommend or recommend staying clear of even!

I have high arches, run 3-6 miles 4+ times a week (intervals), and I have a bunion on my left foot. I loved my gel-1120s but would like maybe a nicer shoe?

Any information ... Sat, 6 Dec 2008 00:20:22 EST Which is better? When training for a 5K, is it better to workout running a shorter distance fast or a longer distance slow?
the reason i'm asking is because right now i could probably run a 5K (on flat ground) at a slow (pretty darn close to walking pace), but i wouldn't want to enter a 5K run if i'm going to be that slow.
would it be better to run a shorter distance to train at a faster pace and just work up to running at that pace a 5K? Mon, 1 Dec 2008 18:03:54 EST Be a Glady-ator! I saw this article on CNN and it really inspired me. I like how she has the determination to achieve her goals, regardless of age.

tail.html Mon, 24 Nov 2008 15:43:36 EST My first 5K I'm new to this team, and new to the 5K runs...I will be running a 5k on November 22 and another one on Thanksgiving day. Any ideas on how to prep me up? I'm not a runner, i'm more of a power walker/jogger, and even at that i dont do much of.

What's your advice on my first 5K run?

Thank you sooo much in advance.

Hugs,
Ana

Mon, 17 Nov 2008 11:52:31 EST Starting to Run? I am walking and hiking every day, but my goal is to do a 5K, and at least part of it must be run, because that is important to me. I am pretty overweight. Can anyone give me advise as to how to start, i.e. go from walking to running? Or, is it as simple as just doing it? Does it help to do walk-run? Or just run 90 seconds, then 2 days later 120 seconds etc.? Thu, 13 Nov 2008 13:29:13 EST 1/2 Marathon! I completed a 1/2 marathon (walking) last week. I came in second last but my only goal was to finish. I was sooooo not trained for it. I have several 5 & 10k's lined up and another 1/2 marathon in the spring. So I need to bring my speed up and maybe even start running.

Tue, 4 Nov 2008 23:36:23 EST I did it! I completed my first 5K yesterday morning! YAHOOO!!! My goals were to make it without walking and to come in under 35 mins. I ran the whole time and clocked in just under 32 mins. I'm very proud! Mon, 27 Oct 2008 08:35:09 EST new here, and getting ready for my first 5k! Hey I'm new here! I'm Lorraine, but most people call me Raine. I'm from NJ, 25 years old and a recent law school graduate, planning on going into the USAF JAG Corps (as long as I passed the bar exam - fingers crossed!). I used to love running when I was younger, but after 4 knee surgeries, including a reconstruction to realign my left leg, I was very weary about running again. But 4 years after the reconstruction, I finally decided to give it a try. In May, when I started, I couldnt even... Sun, 26 Oct 2008 17:05:24 EST Hi from Mesa, AZ Hi there!!

I've been on sparkpeople over a year now, and I've lost 55 pounds. I love being a size 12 again and am now working on my fitness level rather than just watching the scale.

My husband is a triathlete and has hoped someday I would join him in the training and all that. I am just starting my walk/run program. I hope to improve each week!!! I know I will if I can just keep it up!!!

Once I learn to run, then I get to learn to swim... really swim, ... Tue, 21 Oct 2008 16:14:07 EST My first 3.5K? 4K? I'm not sure... I did a 3k walk today with my university, and apparently, they messed up the path for the walkers (there was also a 5k run going on at the same time...something's telling me I should've registered for that instead), because it wasn't supposed to be as long as it was.
Mind you, I was speed walking and jogging most of the way (with full-out running at the end), but I finished in 43:45.

I don't know if this is "good," per se, but I'm really proud of myself for at least finishing... Sun, 19 Oct 2008 13:57:30 EST First 5K on December 6th Good morning everyone!

Here's my brief story: I broke my left femur in two places in February of this year. My bones are healing fantastically, but it takes a *long* time to get 100% muscle strength back in some of the biggest muscles in the body; I couldn't walk for 9 weeks so every muscle on the left side of my body totally atrophied. I had a titanium rod put in my femur through my knee and had 4 screws put in at the distal part of my femur.... I then had the screws removed 4 mon... Wed, 15 Oct 2008 10:54:31 EST My First 5k I started off doing the couch to 5k program and after completing it competed in my first 5k. My time was 24:48. I was ecstatic and can't believe I ran the whole thing. It was exhausting and exhilerating and I cannot wait to do it again. 104 182 Sun, 12 Oct 2008 10:51:23 EST On my way to my first Hey everyone my name is Tracie and I have 3 wonderful kids and I am getting ready to run my first 5k on November 14th for a little girl who has cancer. I am super excited and hope that I can do it. I hurt my knee awhile ago and ever since them I have been trying to get the strength built back up in it. Its getting there. Can't wait to chat with everyone. Have a great day. Thu, 9 Oct 2008 12:31:04 EST Mommy with plans to 5K Hello!
Since I started my weight loss journey several months ago, I've been telling myself that I'd run a 5K by the end of October. I mostly picked that time because it felt so far away! Now it's coming up!

I've been running little spurts with my double stroller, and was finally able to do some just-me time at the track recently and was happy to find I can do almost 2 miles without stopping. With about 3 weeks to go until the race I plan to do, I know I can work up to the full... Tue, 7 Oct 2008 08:27:27 EST New lady runner here! Hi everyone! I just joined SP and this group, and I can't wait to "meet" everyone and share advice on getting ready to run a 5K. I was a runner years ago and had a knee injury. This coincided with my weight-gain, and everything went south for awhile. Well, not anymore! I'm back, and I'm here to get ready to run in 2009. Let's all cheer eachother on to victory! 182 Sat, 4 Oct 2008 12:01:29 EST My New Shoes Ok so I finally went to a decent running store to get an opinion on shoes and oh boy am I glad I did. My first pair of shoes were a ok shoe but bottom line starter shoe. These new shoes are a great fit so far. I haven't run in them yet. They have a 30 day trial period as long as you don't wear them outside you can return them if they don't feel right. So I have to wear them around the house and at the gym to get a good feel for them. But so far I think they did a great job fitting me especial... Sat, 20 Sep 2008 20:57:40 EST A new runner from Munich Hi, I live in Munich and started the C25K program in July. I'm up to running 25 minutes solid now, and ready to do more.

I'm looking longingly at the Munich Marathon in October and wishing I would be ready for the 10K part of it in time, but I guess I should "walk" before I can "run". So I'll look for a 5k to work toward first! Sat, 13 Sep 2008 06:26:46 EST New and motivated..... New here and I am excited and motivated. I am doing whatever I can to keep up my current level of motivation as I know it will inevitably wane. Two years ago I was really fit, but took it a bit for granted and now I am back at the beginning. Isn't it 'funny' how tough it is to get fit and how easy it is to lose it...aggh... I was never really a runner (actually really disliked it - it was a means to an end), but I have done a couple of 5ks in the past and plan on doing my first in several ... Thu, 11 Sep 2008 10:28:56 EST New Gal Here! Hi everyone,

I came into Spark People not knowing how much I was going to enjoy running. I am a happily 40 year old mother of two boys, one 19 the other 11. They are both heavily into sports, as is my husband who has been a coach for the YMCA for about umpteen years.

I have done the spinning, aerobics and all that jazz, so to speak, but once I started running, it took me to different heights. Sat, 6 Sep 2008 21:39:46 EST New here Hi all,
I just started doing an interval running program to try to shake up my workouts and I am really enjoying it. I have been doing it about three weeks, mostly running on the treadmill but hoping to start getting out some before the weather turns bad. Right now I'm doing 5-8 min. run intervals, doing longer intervals at the beginning of the workout, and shorter, faster ones toward the end.
Anne-Marie Sat, 30 Aug 2008 14:17:25 EST New Guy Hello everyone, my name is Garin. My name is Kate. I am at the moment a walker, but am really wanting to get into running. I'm taking it really slow so that I don't scare myself off. My dream is to one day run an entire 5k without stopping/walking. Tue, 12 Aug 2008 20:03:42 EST My third 5K completed!! This past weekend I ran my third 5K, an annual all womens 5K!! It was the coolest thing I have done in a long time. This is the second year that I have done this and this year was joined by a friend and her 10yr old daughter!! It was so exciting to see how excited her daughter was to be involved in the race. I had my best run, and felt great!! It is exciting to see so many women so excited about running and about getting and staying healthy!! Mon, 4 Aug 2008 09:34:24 EST Start Over Well, I started training for my 5k earlier this year. Ran into some health issues that I'm still working out, but as soon as I get them sorted out I think I'm going to start training again! I did the couch to 5k and got up to week 4 or 5. I know it was one of those two. Anyways..that's it hopefully I can be ready by the end of the year so I can cross a 5k off of my goals list!!! Sun, 3 Aug 2008 21:00:12 EST Hi! My name is Jess, and I'm very new to the Couch to 5K program. I'm doing this because my mom and I have decided to run a 5K together sometime this year; and in part because my ultimate goal is to participate in a triathlon (registered) by next August. :) I can't wait to meet and chat with you!

:) Jess Tue, 29 Jul 2008 13:41:09 EST 2 days til 1st race! I only started running in April, but I know I am ready. I ran my 4mile training loop 3 times last week, no problem. This week I have taken it easy, only 2 light runs on the treadmill. I know I am prepared and I have no doubt that I can do it.

But, I still have a bit of the jitters. I am so excited and nervous and excited. I guess I just wanna ask for some love people, support, encouragement, anything you have to offer.

Thanks so much, and I will be sure to post a de... Thu, 24 Jul 2008 11:48:36 EST Hey! My name is Julie. I recently decided that I wanted to run a 5k race, but I'm not much of a runner. I enlisted the help of my boyfriend who ran track and cross country in high school. He hasn't been running much and is always saying how he needs to get back into it. I thought a 5k would be good motivation for me to get out there and also good for him to get back into running. I kind of made him my personal trainer! =D But I'm a little worried when he started telling me his game plan. Let me te... Fri, 11 Jul 2008 16:58:40 EST Hello! Hello! My name is Melissa and I ran my first 5K last November and was so proud of myself for finishing in 34 minutes. Unfortunately, i've not been able to get back into the swing of things since, does anyone have any advice? I'd love to get back into it, and maybe even shoot for a 10k or 1/2 marathon next year. How do you get into your zone when you train? I did great at the race keeping pace with the other runners, but I don't enjoy my training runs at all. Thu, 10 Jul 2008 15:11:09 EST I think I'm gonna do it... I think I am going to do it folks- I am signing up for my first ever 5k!! I have mostly been walking but it is a month away and I think by then I can at least jog some of it... I have heard I don't need to worry about coming in last but I have to say it is a bit nerve-wracking just signing up!! I would love any advice or stories of your first 5k's as a bit of inspiration... Thu, 10 Jul 2008 10:47:28 EST First 5k on Saturday, any tips? Hey all, I am going to run my first 5k on Saturday and I am really excited and anxious about it. I know it is just for fun, and last time I pushed myself on my run I got it to about a 7 min mile, but I would love to hear if you all have some advice for me! Wed, 9 Jul 2008 23:47:16 EST Two things every new runner should know I began the Couch to 5k program almost a month ago and have figured out a few things since then. Two are very very important for new runners to know in order to avoid injury and I though I would share them with everyone (there is a whole article on other things new runners should know on my blog, but I think the following two are THE MOST IMPORTANT!):

FIRST: Get a pair of running shoes

The right pair of running shoes really does make a world of difference. I began my pr... Sat, 28 Jun 2008 11:37:44 EST IPOD nano and nike plus system I use my ipod nano on both treadmill and outdoor runs. I have noticed that when I use it on the treadmill it shows my mileage about 3/10 of a mile longer than what the treadmill says I ran. I have recalibrated and still have the issue. It makes me question how far I am actually running on my outdoor runs. Is anyone else having this problem? Wed, 25 Jun 2008 17:30:05 EST My first 5K June 22nd I ran my first 5K. What an accomplishment it was. I was running good and strong and in my first lap I started to pass people. As I continued on and warmed up around the second half of the course I then started to pick up my pace and pass others. What a great feeling that was. The last 1/4 mile my husband came back to see me after he completed his run and met up with me. He ran with me to help encourage me to finish at a good time. He told me when to pick it up and kick it in to fini... Wed, 25 Jun 2008 09:38:12 EST How do I get started training I am newly back at the gym. I have been working out consistently for almost a year and have decided to dedicate myself to running a 5K. My goal is to run the Hoosiers Outrun Cancer run on October 4th of this year. ...
