It started out that she was so fussy when I'd walk/run with her...then by the time she was better in the stroller, I was back to work full time and right in the middle of a hectic lifestyle, so I ran here and there, but nothing consistant.

Now, I'm 4 months post-partum with my 2nd child and DYING to get back to running. I'm guessing that folks are migrating over to other SparkTeams with questions and comments as they grow into more experienced runners, and I'm wondering if this SparkTeam is still serving a purpose. I joined about a week ago- I'm an incredibly shy person- both in person and online- I contribute a lot of that to being uncomfortable with my weight- so I am now finally introducing myself - and taking steps to lose weight, feel great... This year I'm dedicated to completing my first 5K in May. Just looking for a little motivation and commaraderie from those of you who have completed a race or who plan to complete one this year. My friend and I finished second and third in our age group, which was definitely a surprise. After our race, I stopped running altogether - I had completed my goal, so now what?

With the new year, I decided to set a goal for myself of running 4 races throughout the year, and I am determined to make at least one of those a 10K. The first one is March 5th, and 8-week training starts Monday. Hopefully the motivation... So I plan to start the "running" portion of my training by using my elliptical.

How closely does this simulate the effect running has on the body? If I can do 5K on my elliptical with relatively little trouble should I also have a similar amount of success when I finally hit the pavement?

I have never been a runner but completing a 5K is one of my... I have a 7 mile "foot race" coming up Saturday, which I plan to walk/run. But I want to have good endurance and do as much of it as a run as possible (not just a fast walk). I ran this morning for an hour (about 1/2 running and 1/2 at a brisk walk), and got in 3-1/2 miles. In fact today is my 29th year anniversery. I have been running on the treadmill for about 3 years. the more weight I lose the longer I can run on the treadmill. I thought I would try to run a 5k on the treadmill this past week and see how I could do. I surprised myself and I ran the whole time without stopping to walk and I did it in 35:40. I was so proud of myself.

I have attempted to run 5k on the treadmill before but always had... Mon, 9 Mar 2009 16:31:08 EST Running After an 18 Year Break http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x14759x23615530 About 18 years ago, I ran some road races (5K, 5 Mile, 10K) but stopped as other things in life got in the way. My physical at the beginning of the year (it was about 6 years overdue) was a real wakeup call. I had ballooned to 260 pounds (I was around 180 in my running days) and had blood pressure issues. I discovered SparkPeople and started making changes to the way I lived. Part of it was exercising everyday. At the beginning, most of it was on the treadmill at home that I burned out after ... Sun, 8 Mar 2009 23:07:08 EST My First!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x23614264 I completed my first 5k on Saturday (3/7). It was the APSO Power Run near my hometown. Not only was it my first but it was an inaugural event, so that was kinda neat. About 200 runners/walkers.

My only goal was to run the whole thing and I did! I was so excited! i really had no idea how long it would take me since I've not been running 3 miles long and I ditched the watch a couple of weeks ago on my runs. I told my wife that if I finished in 30-35 minutes I would be a happy... Sun, 8 Mar 2009 22:21:25 EST I walked in my first 5k today!!!! Susan G. Komen 5 http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x23583026 I had a great time! But I must admit that it was one of the most physical things I have done! The distance wasn’t the problem for me but the race was on the LSU campus and that sucker is full of hills and the road full of holes. So that took a toll on me. Another thing that I wasn’t use to is passing up people. People would just stop dead in their tracks for whatever reason so I had to dodge them, then I would get behind a wall of ppl going slow so when a hole opened I had to take it, runnin... Sat, 7 Mar 2009 19:47:32 EST I did it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x23579625 I completed my 1st 5K this morning. I kept putting off doing one and kept signing up for the 1 mile fun runs instead, but this time my 6 year old wanted to do the 5K. I figure -- why not, now's my chance. Needless to say running with a 6 year old is not fun, but we finished in 45 minutes. I probably would have done 30 minutes, but I had to keep walking, stopping (at one point carrying) and waiting on her. I had a lot of fun, I think it will be easier for other runs now that the initial ... I am working to run my first 5K on May 9. I NEVER thought I would like to run, but I am loving the challenge of finding out how much I can do. Three years ago, I set out to lose weight and found sooooo much more in the process. I am a married, working mom, over 40 and discovering this for the first time. A late bloomer, I guess. I am looking forward to getting tips and support from experienced and beginning runners. I am able to run close to 1 mile almost 1 1/2 miles without stopping...then I do a run/walk. Good luck to those of you getting ready for your first 5k run. Best of luck. It is awesome and such a great feeling crossing that finish line. WOOHOO!!!!! So I need to bring my speed up and maybe even start running.

Tue, 4 Nov 2008 23:36:23 EST I did it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x19686736 I completed my first 5K yesterday morning! YAHOOO!!! My goals were to make it without walking and to come in under 35 mins. I ran the whole time and clocked in just under 32 mins. I'm very proud! I'm Lorraine, but most people call me Raine. I'm from NJ, 25 years old and a recent law school graduate, planning on going into the USAF JAG Corps (as long as I passed the bar exam - fingers crossed!). I used to love running when I was younger, but after 4 knee surgeries, including a reconstruction to realign my left leg, I was very weary about running again. But 4 years after the reconstruction, I finally decided to give it a try. In May, when I started, I couldnt even... I love being a size 12 again and am now working on my fitness level rather than just watching the scale.

My husband is a triathlete and has hoped someday I would join him in the training and all that. I am just starting my walk/run program. I hope to improve each week!!! I know I will if I can just keep it up!!!

Once I learn to run, then I get to learn to swim... really swim, ... I'm not sure... http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x19466887 I did a 3k walk today with my university, and apparently, they messed up the path for the walkers (there was also a 5k run going on at the same time...something's telling me I should've registered for that instead), because it wasn't supposed to be as long as it was.
Mind you, I was speed walking and jogging most of the way (with full-out running at the end), but I finished in 43:45.

I don't know if this is "good," per se, but I'm really proud of myself for at least finishing... My bones are healing fantastically, but it takes a *long* time to get 100% muscle strength back in some of the biggest muscles in the body; I couldn't walk for 9 weeks so every muscle on the left side of my body totally atrophied. I had a titanium rod put in my femur through my knee and had 4 screws put in at the distal part of my femur.... I then had the screws removed 4 mon... I mostly picked that time because it felt so far away! Now it's coming up!

I've been running little spurts with my double stroller, and was finally able to do some just-me time at the track recently and was happy to find I can do almost 2 miles without stopping. With about 3 weeks to go until the race I plan to do, I know I can work up to the full... I just joined SP and this group, and I can't wait to "meet" everyone and share advice on getting ready to run a 5K. I was a runner years ago and had a knee injury. This coincided with my weight-gain, and everything went south for awhile. Well, not anymore! I'm back, and I'm here to get ready to run in 2009. Let's all cheer eachother on to victory! 182 Sat, 4 Oct 2008 12:01:29 EST My New Shoes http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x18657233 Ok so I finally went to a decent running store to get an opinion on shoes and oh boy am I glad I did. My first pair of shoes were a ok shoe but bottom line starter shoe. These new shoes are a great fit so far. I haven't run in them yet. They have a 30 day trial period as long as you don't wear them outside you can return them if they don't feel right. So I have to wear them around the house and at the gym to get a good feel for them. But so far I think they did a great job fitting me especial... Wed, 7 May 2008 09:22:01 EST Hello http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x14759x14405174 Hello, I'm Allison I just started running in March and my first 5K is on May 18th. I'm still having to walk sometimes when I run, but I hope to stop that soon. I run/walk a 3.1mi. in around 36-38min. I'm hoping to run the 5K in around 35min. Where I run is very hilly and where the race is, is very flat. I don't really know if this is good or bad. Well, I'm glad to have joined this team and I hope to get to know all of you soon. Have a great day. Free shipping and handling/delivery. Best Deal I've seen on any mag. I've been working on running for a few months now, and have recently just stepped up big time. I had a personal goal to run a 5K in the fall sometime, but realized such a late goal was only making me procrastinate - so for a few weeks now, it's been a serious priorty! Our school district is having a 5K for their scholarship foundation, so I thought it was a great cause.

So, I said I was in for it, and now I'm a little hesitant! I have 5... Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:14:34 EST The 5k season has begun http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x14162954 So here it is. The race I have been planning on and I fell short of my training goals but I am just going to go and do the best I can. There will be more I can make up for. Wish me luck I just don't want to be last. But with 2000 runners there is bound to be someone who will let me pass 100

Good luck to the rest on your races Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:32:32 EST 5K in 12 days - any suggestions?? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x14759x14052640 OK. I'm going to attempt my first 5K in 12 days. I've never been able to run 5K before, and I sort of signed up for the race at the last minute. I'm raising money for cancer research (my uncle has bone marrow cancer). I've been running at the gym to train for about a week, and the furthest I went was 2.5 miles, at great difficulty. I also know that I have difficulty running outside, in general, due to exercise/pollen induced asthma.

HOWEVER, I am going to try my hardest to mak... Sat, 12 Apr 2008 21:20:06 EST New to running http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x14759x13751992 Hello. My name is Iba. I recently started running. My husband ran cross country and still run occasionally. He talked me into running a 5K race this July. I am a bit apprehensive about it still but excited at the same time.
