I just joined the team in hopes of learning more about the birds that visit my growing collection of feeders. I'm very new at this, but I'm hooked and anxious to learn more.

My other two main interests are my dogs (my passion!), and gardening. I was complaining one day on a gardening team about pulling up thistle weeds and somebody mentioned how finches love them. Well, I love the song of finches, and one thing led to another until I bought my first finch feeder. W... Sat, 30 Aug 2008 12:27:05 EST What did you do today? Wed, 6 Aug 2008 10:28:02 EST Feeding "scraps" to birds Hey, I have a question about something I thought about putting out to the birds.

The question came about because of my tabletop mill for grinding flour. I had some wheat that was too dirty to grind, and I gave them that and they loved it! I also have some rice flour I made, but really haven't found any way I like it fixed. I've tried a dozen or so ways to make it into something, but don't like the texture. I thought about putting it out for the birds, but you always hear about how... Mon, 4 Aug 2008 08:26:35 EST Bird books Do you have any? If so, which ones? If you have more than one, which is your "go to" book? Tue, 29 Jul 2008 14:43:58 EST Weird I have a new bird in my yard. He's been showing up for about 2 weeks. It is a male cardinal, but he is bald. He has only one visible feather on his head. From the neck down, he looks healthy and normal, but a bald cardinal is definitely weird looking. Sun, 27 Jul 2008 18:32:38 EST Question... we just put in a walk made of paving brick, and the birds seem to really like it....anybody know why? Wed, 23 Jul 2008 12:53:31 EST Guess who?? I had an idea for a fun thread that’s related to the team theme.

Why don’t we describe a bird and guess what it is. Give just enough description to get the guessing started, and then add more clues. The person who guesses correctly can describe the next bird.

So get your bird books out and thumb thru for your pick.

I’ll start.

This bird is a reddish brown above with two white wing bars and pale buff to white with heavy dark streaks below. Any suggestions. Thu, 12 Jun 2008 08:40:45 EST Binoculars Does anyone have a recommendation for decent but inexpensive binoculars? I have binoculars now that were a give-away, but they are not too bad, they are 10x34. The problem is that I wear glasses and they don't have those eye cup things. Thanks for any advice! Thu, 29 May 2008 20:56:00 EST Hey from California.... Joined Sp in January- saw my first grosbeak of the year and thought to myself- "I'll bet there is a backyard bird watching team"- and low and behold there is- So joined today. I live in the East Bay where it can get near 100 in the summer so some of the birds in my yard are just passing through- right now I'm also enjoying the goldfinches while I can. They usually leave end of May, beginning of June. I noted the grosbeaks a couple years ago but this is the earliest I've seen him/her. I think... Wed, 30 Apr 2008 15:22:59 EST Hi! Many residents of Michigan, believe that our robins signal the return of spring, but the real harbinger of spring in Michigan is the Red-winged blackbird.

I'm very happy to have found your team and... Sat, 29 Mar 2008 01:41:39 EST A little bird humor. The Biker and The Sparrow:

A biker is riding along a country lane, when a sparrow flies up in front of him. The biker can't do anything and hits the sparrow. As he looks in his rear view mirror, he sees the sparrow lying in the road. Being the kind of guy he is, he stops, picks up the sparrow and takes it home and puts it in a cage, still in a coma. When the sparrow wakes up the following morning, he looks through the bars of the cage and says, "Shoot, I must have killed the biker... Wed, 5 Mar 2008 09:24:28 EST Great Backyard Bird Count Great Backyard Bird Count was this weekend (fri-Mon). I did a 15 min. count as I tried to walk at the river walk. It was miserable and cold and windy but I saw a beautiful mountain bluebird among others.

If I can figure out a way to do it, I will post a pic or two Wed, 20 Feb 2008 00:26:49 EST Feederwatcher program I joined a really cool organization this past month. Cornell University has been operating a Feeder watcher program for the past 20 years in order to track winter bird feeding patterns across the U.S. and Canada. It costs the volunteers $15 to be a member. They send you a packed jammed with materials and suggestions and have you do what you are all ready doing. Watch your feeders then report what you see. The information gathered in these reports have helped them to better understand how... Wed, 30 Jan 2008 18:13:29 EST Bring on the Birds! I'm so glad to find a group with the same interests as mine. Hello all!
I'm Lynn and I'm a writer and editor who lives in the sub-Arctic, in the Yukon Territory, Canada. (Up beside Alaska, for those who are geographically challenged! *g*)
I'm fairly new to birds, so I'm afraid I can't discuss breeds and habits as fluently as you people can....but I'm very interested, and have been 'into it' since I had a nesting box in the backyard of a house I was renting a few years ago. It was fascinating...and I cried buckets when one of the babies fell ... Sat, 19 Jan 2008 19:22:42 EST Hi, I'm new I have been backyard birdwatching for many years, we have a large yard with some wooded areas nearby, so we have lots of bird activity to watch. My favorite year round bird to watch is the Nuthatch. (We now have two types that frequent our feeders, White breasted, and Red breasted) I look forward to talking to everyone, sharing stories and learning more. Mon, 7 Jan 2008 10:44:00 EST Bird of the Month For 2008, I am going to do a “bird of the month” feature. I will select a bird, include information about the bird and change the team photo to that same bird. You are welcome to add your comments about the bird and any other fun facts you may know. Also, it would be neat to know if this is a common bird in your area. If anyone has a good photo of a bird they would like to have featured, please sparkmail me and we can work out the details.

Our first bird is the Brown Headed ... Mon, 12 Nov 2007 14:12:07 EST Hello Everyone! Hello,
I am new to this site.
Unfortunately I don't have a "real" backyard. I live in an apartment building. My building faces a river and I have a chance to see all kinds of birds.
I am an avid birder and every year I make a trip to a consevation area specially geared towards bird watching. I have been doing it for about 5 years, so I am still relatively new at this, but I love it!
Good luck everyone! Sun, 11 Nov 2007 11:18:46 EST Nestboxes and Birdbaths Hello, everyone!

I live in an apartment and am trying to figure out how to attract birds. I have a platform feeder in a window that's got plenty of visitors - cardinals, chickadees, finches, and the occassional tufted titmouse.

Now, I have another hook that's attached to a piece of wood in my window. For winter-time I have suet on it, but I'm thinking of changing it up for the spring and summer. Has anyone has luck with nestboxes close to a window... and if so, do you ha... I'm going to put them into a slideshow/movie with music sometime this week. When I get it done, I'll let you know and give you the link to it.

17 Tue, 4 Sep 2007 08:39:42 EST Unexpected changes I only started birding in May, so I'm still learning a lot about bird behavior and migration and so forth. But one thing I've noticed that has been unexpected is that some of the most common birds that people complain about - like grackles and starlings - and others like cowbirds, catbirds, and house sparrows... these were all visiting my yard in swarms back in May, but now in August all I'm seeing are goldfinches, nuthatches, chickadees, titmouses, and the occasional cardinal.

No... Thu, 30 Aug 2007 07:24:28 EST Do squirrels eat hummingbird feeders? This morning I went out to find the hummingbird feeder on the ground and the bee guards had all been removed and chewed up. This is the first time such a thing has happened and I can only guess it was the squirrels.
Fri, 24 Aug 2007 07:02:53 EST Who are regular visiters to your yard? Right now my bird population is down a bit from what it was at back in May when I started. Regularly, I get goldfinches, hummingbirds, nuthatches, titmouses, chickadees, cardinals, and catbirds.

Often, I get both downy and red-bellied woodpeckers. Sometimes a wren will stop by. Housefinches sometimes.

Back in May, I had a lot of sparrows: house sparrows and song sparrows mostly. There are a lot fewer sparrows now, and I think I'm seeing grasshopper or savannah sparr... Thu, 23 Aug 2007 13:08:45 EST New Visitors to Your Yard? I am an avid backyard birdwatcher. :) I do occasionaly seek out birds other places, too, when I get a chance. Looking forward to reading what other people are seeing in their backyards, what they feed their birds and how they solve problem, like deer drinking all the water in the birdbath!
