When we sometimes struggle to carve an hour out of our day to practice yoga at home, that hour is a precious block of time that we can’t afford to waste by getting stuck in old habits. I used to think that it was enough to just do a few asanas (poses) each day to keep myself going, and like many of you, I would defer to the “I’ll do ... I am a yoga newbie but already obsessed. For years I thought you had to be already fit in order to practice yoga, a few months ago I found out this was not so - it is also a good way to get fit. I have a lot of health problems and I love the way yoga addresses the whole person and not simply the physical. Crippled with osteoarthritis, I am always on the hunt for modifications of the asanas. I love my home yoga practice, but I hope to get into a studio sometime this year, my options are limited and I may end up taking them at the YMCA instead of an actual studio, but that doesn't mean they won't be any good. Yoga and Meditation can help us to go through. Set your goal and be ready to have a "me" time to recharge "batteries". You deserve it!

Namaste!!!!!

Sat, 1 Dec 2012 01:54:20 EST Relatively new yogi http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x13x51035488 I searched for yoga classes in my area on and off for years and finally stumbled across a new studio opening very close to home. I was so excited! I'm sure that I bugged the new owners to death asking questions about when they were opening, schedules, beginner classes etc. They opened Aug 1, 2012 and I took two classes that day. My first ever class was a gentle class and I was hooked. The 2nd class that day was called Basics and was a beginners slow flow. They offered an 30 day unlimited pack... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 09:38:58 EST A view on compulsive desires http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x13x50960551 I am, very slowly, reading a book by Eknath Easwaran that is linked to my interest in yoga. This part 'jumped out' at me today:

"To use a cruel simile, these chains have become part of our feeling, thinking, and being. How is it possible to remove something that you believe is part of you, "bone of your bone, flesh of your flesh"? Sun, 25 Nov 2012 13:54:37 EST Integrating yoga with weight training... http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x13x50939095 So I wanted to do yoga and weight training together. I can't do them on the same day because I know my muscles will be way too tired to hold poses. Therefore, I plan to do weight training on Mon, Wed, and Fri and yoga on Tue and Thur. I know my body needs rest for the muscles to repair so I'm looking to do a mild yoga practice primarily for stretching. I'm an extreme beginner with yoga so I don't know the difference between the different types. I'm wondering if someone could tell me what type... I've been doing yoga on and off for years, whenever I stop and then come back, I never, ever can understand why I stopped, it brings me such peace and balance. I'm trying to make yoga a part of my everyday life for the rest of my life.

Love the support here!

414

Fri, 23 Nov 2012 14:32:02 EST 'The accidental yoga student' http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x13x50932888 I've been a member of this team for a while now and read posts, but I don't think I've introduced myself yet. This is, in part, because I tend to feel shy in talking about yoga. Because it's very important to me. Warning: very long post - once I started it was hard to stop! LOL

I started doing yoga some time in the nineties, I think 1996 or so. Back then my 'opinion' was that 'I didn't believe in yoga'. I only went to a class to support a friend of mine who had asked me to come alo... I am done with this body and want my old one back! I'm not sure what happened but instead of getting depressed (that wasn't working for me)! I am going to get on the ball! In 2004 I lost 85 lbs. and kept it off for almost 8 years! And then... it started creeping on. I had partical knee replacement and quit taking my vitamins. Totally unsure why? Then went on Zoloft for anxiety... and it really came on.... I gained almost 40 lbs. over four or five mos. I am miserable!... It causes a lot of pain and discomfort so I feel like I am not getting the best out of those poses because I am focusing on how to situate my body into a comfortable position rather than focus on the pose. It is frustrating because I really love the benefits and way I feel when I practice. I just can't seem to get my hips and legs to cooperate. I have hyper extension in my knees and elbows so I'm not sure...
