Tue, 9 Feb 2016 17:03:15 EST New to the forum Hi I am new to this forum (long time Spark member but not very active until recently) I was also just diagnosed with Lupus this year. The past few months have been a roller coaster for sure. In April when I was diagnosed I spent a week in the hospital with fluid around my heart. They sent me home and a week later I was back with fluid on my lungs. That was when they got a Rheumatologist involved and I was diagnosed with Lupus. Things were going along pretty well for a while (although gaining ... Am not taking any medication now, but will probably start Plaquenil soon.

Anyway, my question in related to diet. Before being diagnosed i have been kind of vegetarian for about a y... Thu, 23 Jul 2015 17:08:25 EST Hand Tremors I recently experienced my first hand tremor. I went to my primary physician today and she wants me to get an MRI and visit a neurologist. Ok so since before I had my last child I knew something was wrong and it wasn't just being tired from pregnancy when I wold sleep all but 3 (maybe) hours out of the day and still feel tired. Well I have managed and gotten my days like this down , but it still happens.

How do I explain not wanting to get out of bed to my husband? Fri, 3 Apr 2015 10:32:11 EST Giving Up Wheat? I'm confined to bed with congestive heart failure, not allowed to get out over 10 minutes at a time, just to go to the bathroom and get something to eat. Since I'm on diuretics, I have to get up a lot! LOL

My doctor suggests that I give up wheat. I don't eat a lot of bread or processed foods, so I probably get less wheat than most people. Still, I'm not sure I'm ready to give it up completely.

Who has given up wheat, and what has it done for you?

Also, has a... Fri, 27 Mar 2015 21:48:25 EST SLE and Silica I've done some research since someone posted how back silica is for people with SLE. That is in regard to people who work with large amounts of silica dust in industrial, farming or mining operations. There are two grades of silica: industrial and food grade. All silica is dangerous if inhaled, because it does not dissolve inside your lungs, and can do damage. The studies were suggesting that for people working in those occupations and inhaling large quantities of the dust, it may be a cause ... Sat, 21 Mar 2015 21:59:45 EST Pain level is increasing, any suggestions? Winter was very hard on me. The cold weather put me into a lot of pain. I've lived in a warm climate for so long, I didn't realize how hard it would be up here in a more temperate place. Now it seems we have gone from winter right into summer. One week, it was in the 50's the next in the mid-to-upper 80s. I'm already using my a/c.

Maybe it was the rapid change in temps, but I've been having a lot of trouble with pain in my legs, feet, lower back and shoulders. So far, haven't had t... Since then I've been eating healthy and doing whatever I can to stay physically active, however, I still get flares from time to time. I even take vitamins. Is there anything I can do to help lessen my flares? Something other than what I'm all ready doing? Mon, 23 Feb 2015 21:12:17 EST Goal of the Week Sometimes a month long challenge doesn't work for everyone. That's ok! You know that each small change can lead to big results. So if you would like to set a goal for a week, post it here and let us encourage you!

Each week you can post a new goal, or you can post as you are able to. I usually have a couple of days of brain fog during the month that make it impossible for me to work, but this month, I've had it every day. My mind won't even wrap around how to put words together into coherent sentences. It's strange, because I can write non-researched non-work things just fine. It's just trying to write professionally that is impossible.

I had not been taking my supplements, so I set up reminder timers on my computer to be sure I take them ... I used castor oil on my scalp and took all sorts of supplements, and it would get a little better, then start falling out again. Someone asked me if I had tried diatomaceous earth. I thought that was something you used for parasites, but it seems it is 99% silica, which is essential to grow hair. I thought what the heck -- I've tried everything else, so I bought some and started taking it every day. I am happy to say that it is working! ... Mon, 26 Jan 2015 21:29:25 EST Eye pain I have eye pain behind and around my right eye. Evidently, it's not only common, but it's common for it to only be on one side. MS has the same symptom. It will go away for a long time, then I feel like there is something crawling in my eye and it starts again. When it happens, I use antibiotic ointment and iodine eye drops and it seems to make it go away for awhile. Doctors have never been able to see anything in my eyes. Thu, 1 Jan 2015 17:35:56 EST You Know You're in a Flare When... Hi Friends...
Many people have asked me personally or in other forums recently what I mean by a flare up or what symptoms I have.
I realize that flare ups are different for everyone and even for the same person one flare can be dramatically different from another. But it also occurred to me that with many people on this team, including new members, it might be helpful to share some of our common flare up symptoms.

I am not trying to make light of this disease with the t... Tue, 30 Dec 2014 09:59:58 EST Spark goals!? Hi Team Butterfly!

Would you like to share you goals? Mon, 1 Dec 2014 09:52:50 EST Here's an odd one for you..... Since mid-October, I have had a problem with dry lips. It's driving me nutty - and it's never happened before. I am the Chapstick Queen so it's not like I don't use moisturisers constantly on my mouth. I know I recently had a flare, and the gritty eyes seem to be coming back too so I'm wondering if it's just some new symptom? I also am chronically low on Vitamin D so I'm taking that again. I remember reading somewhere that cracked, dry lips were a sign of either Vit D or one of the B vit... Wed, 26 Nov 2014 16:07:58 EST Scuba Diving Do any of you scuba dive?

I want to try scuba diving. It's something I've always wanted to do, but never got around to doing. I've thought about trying it lately, but am concerned because I have Lupus and my flare ups ebb and flow, so to speak.

Thoughts?

I've had some bad months( mostly) and am feeling, not so bad, right now.

Wed, 12 Nov 2014 19:27:15 EST Change of Season Symptoms? I have a grown son and I live with my boyfriend of 13 years. We have three cats. In 2008, I lost 30 pounds. Later, I went on Prednisone. I've gained all that weight back, almost to the pound.

I have lupus, antiphospholipid antibody and epilepsy and all the other syndromes and phenomenon that go along with those. Wed, 2 Jul 2014 09:29:01 EST Peeling lips Does anyone else have a problem with peeling lips? It happens to me about every two months. My lips just start peeling in long strips -- just my bottom lip, though. It's not affected by the seasons. The only thing that stops it is keeping a layer of Aquaphor on my lips at all times. Any kind of lip balm, even Burt's Bees, makes it worse. It's driving me crazy! Tue, 10 Jun 2014 09:24:07 EST Dealing With the Heat and Summer SAD ETA: Sorry this is in the wrong place. I found I could not delete it, so it will have to stay here unless a mod moves it.

Florida is not the best place for lupus sufferers, but I am more sensitive to cold than heat, so here I am. Still, it seems the heat gets to me more every year. It's going to be 92F today with a heat index of 102F, so I'm pretty much stuck indoors all day. I try to get out early, like 7 a.m., to do my chores, but lately I have been suffering from my usual summer... Wed, 28 May 2014 09:23:11 EST Pain, frustration and wanting to give up Just so you'll know, I am classified as an untreatable lupie because I have bad reactions to all the drugs they give me. My doctor pretty much gave up on me, and only saw me once a year. I'm in a new town and don't have insurance, and no money to get in with another doctor right now. I can go to the free clinic, but the hours are in the late afternoon, and the neighborhood isn't so good for walking after dark. The bus doesn't run out where I am past 6 p.m., so I probably wouldn't get seen bef... Trying to determine whether that's what it was, or if I was having a reaction to something i ate. (Only odd thing I ate yesterday was some Cadbury mini eggs...the horror if it was that!! :) ) My skin was patchy and bright red with some spots that almost felt like hives. I've been on SP on and off for 5 yrs (just recently returned). I was diagnosed with Lupus about 3 yrs ago. I am told I have a mild version of SLE. Sat, 22 Mar 2014 10:00:25 EST Anyone doing the Lupus walk this year? Hi everyone!! I have been MIA for quite some time. 2012-2013 was a really rough year for me in terms of my lupus so I had to take a break from SparkPeople for a while. It got me thinking, should I stop shaking hands as well? Having lupus, and being on immune supp... Fri, 11 Jan 2013 10:59:11 EST Moon face...going away?! Finally, finally, finally, I think I'm noticing a difference in my moon face. I'm down to 5mg/day of prednisone, and I've been on it for several years now, so I can't tell you what my highest dose was. But, I'm finally noticing a difference! So, there is hope, everyone!
104
I'm super excited about this, if you can't tell. Haha! I jumped all over this challenge when I saw it:

ndividual.asp

Starting January 6th, you do one 10 minute spark video/day, and 30 minutes of exercise. Thu, 3 Jan 2013 13:49:41 EST Wild Ride OR Diagnosed with Pulmonary Emboli Hello all! It's been quite sometime since I've posted or even visited. It's been a wild ride in "unclear what autoimmue condition you have"- land. I got sick with what we thought was bronchitis the first of October. I was admitted to the hospital on Halloween with bronchitis and acute asthma exacerbation. Stayed 4 days, but never really felt I was breathing well enough.

I did well the 1st week out, but noticed that I had reducing exercise tolerance. By 11/30, I was getting short of... Mon, 10 Dec 2012 22:07:22 EST December Challenge Hello! It's only Dec 2 but I thought I'd get this thread started. I'm doing a challenge inspired by Coach Nicole to work out every day this month.

This might be a challenge if celebrating Christmas with lots of people around, or at someone else's house. I know I'm going to be in a small town with no gym for a few days, and it'll be too snowy to run outside, but I know I can at least go for a long walk those days. I don't normally consider walking a workout, but if I also do a S... Sun, 2 Dec 2012 22:46:47 EST Summer is the worst! Got way behind. I hate summer. I can't get outside, in fact, my doc says that due to my light and heat sensitivity, that summer is my S.A.D. season, and I agree. Went through a really hard time this summer, stopped even trying to exercise or eat right, got really depressed, but now I'm ready to try again. I think if I can get into better shape and get my nutrition balanced by next summer, I will be able to exercise indoors and feel a little better.

I need to get onto a lupus anti-inflammatory die... My latest attempt is crochet.
I've found there are some hobbies I just can't enjoy since lupus. That, and migraines. When I was in high school, I would walk two hours a day. Crazy, huh? If you find the pessimist in you coming out too much, or tend to get depressed or 'the blues' at this time of year you may find this exercise in gratitude helpful. If not, that's okay too. (Note: this exercise will not 'cure' true depression or Seasonal Affecti... Sat, 3 Nov 2012 10:45:53 EST Prednisone and withdrawal Ugh. That ugly word we all dread: prednisone. Paired with another word I'm sure a lot of us now dread as well: tapering. Ick! I have a question, but first a very short background.
I have been on prednisone for four years now, minimum of 10mg/day, max of 60mg/day (and more when I was in ICU after surgery, but I don't count that, as I tapered down to 60 quickly after.) I have yet been able to get off of prednisone, as I've flared with each try. My doctor and I are trying again, very slowly... Mon, 15 Oct 2012 11:27:10 EST awaiting diagnoses Hi everyone,
I am so glad I found this team of supportive people. I was feeling like a crazy lady, always complaining of aches and pains and thinking it is all in my head. My dear husband had to keep reminding me that my multiple diagnoses of joint and bone injuries, together with multiple other things prove that it is not in my head. Well I finally found a dr who is taking me seriously and sending me to a rheumy for tests. I had so many surgeries, renauds, memory loss, etc, that I do no... Mon, 15 Oct 2012 09:44:17 EST need rheumatologist I have had a run around from my GP for years. He did not connect my symptoms and sent me for bandaid solutions to different specialists. I started having breathing and heart trouble and only now did someone take me seriously, (my pain dr and still not my GP.) He told me that he sees connective tissue disease and thinks its lupus. When I asked for a rheumatologist recommendation, he did not have one he knew well. His nurse gave me one from the list in the building. How did you find a good rhe... I hope so at least!

With the prednisone, I've been gaining and gaining and gaining weight. I keep trying to lose, but it's not happening, obviously.
That's not the issue, though. The problem is clothing. I got a pair of pajama jeans from my MIL after my surgery, for recovery. Of course I have yet to stop wearing them, as they've expanded ... Tue, 25 Sep 2012 11:42:26 EST You ARE an INSPIRATION! Hi Friends,

A lot of you have stories about how you have overcome different aspects of what you are dealing with whether it is Lupus or something else. Some of you have done things despite the disease that you never thought you could do or would be able to do again. Some of you just plain kick the symptoms to the curb and get out there every day and live the best life you can. But what most of us don't realize is that our story is full of inspiration and hope for other people. So I... Fri, 21 Sep 2012 10:46:17 EST PSA: Flu shots! Fri, 7 Sep 2012 10:58:50 EST flare up For months I have been fighting off a flare up and I think my body has finally given in. I hurt all over. Fri, 10 Aug 2012 23:20:06 EST New Revelation Well let's see where do I start. My dear mother who passed away in 2000 was first diagnosed with Diabetes (which ran in the family starting with her mother) and then around 1985(ish) Lupus after having me in 84 (which also ran in the family staring with her father). I was diagnosed with Lupus and Fibromyalgia in 2000. It is such a daily battle. Stress adds to it and I recently found out my father who passed away 2 years ago is not my real dad, boy that has caused me to have a flare up. My mom is not cooperating and telling me who my real father is.
So anyway enough of that! I just needed to find a good thread to help me through this flare up and to come and share our good days as well as... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 07:20:37 EST Waking up sick? The past couple of weeks, and in the past, I've been waking up feeling awful. Terrible heachache-type ache, body aches, sore throat, grogginess, puffy eyes, etc. Like I have a cold, but I don't. It's very odd.
The only thing I can think of that's different is my doctor is *finally* tapering me off prednisone again. I have a really bad history of this, and am wondering if this could be the cause? But, I've had this 'cold' issue in the mornings before, so I'm doubting that could be it. <BR...
