Do you save your reciepts for fabric and notions? I did the first year I quilted but then stopped as I charge most to a credit card and have that record. However, a post on facebook was from a woman whose washing machine failed and leaked through the wall to her fabrics, ruining the bookcase they were in and causing a lot of mildew and damage. Her insurance company wants to wash all the fabric and return it to her not ironed. What! If this woman had receipts, she could just present them ... I buy patterns that sometimes never get made. On the fabric side, I buy things on sale and make sure I have enough of each go with item to make a quilt. I'll get 2 yards or more of a large print and smaller amounts of the accent or neutrals that go with it. Then I search for a pattern. That is why I keep all those magazines. Perhaps that will help me do more sewing, but it will require some strict diet control. For June I will:

1) Keep my nutrition below 1100 calories a day
2) Walk at least 1 mile daily
3) Get another quilt in the frame and hopefully quilted
4) Fi... Carol Wed, 28 May 2014 08:55:00 EST ARE YOU A BAG LADY? Something we have not discussed here is making bags! How did we miss that? I love making bags and have made oodles! One of my favorites is "Projects to Go" by WhistlePigCreek. I have mde and sold several, some with correctly placed pockets and some not. Its kind of complicated. Since I have about 5 bag orders on my list right now, I am looking for a simple tote bag with pockets. I've printed off a few. I know we all have vacation plans, but are you going to include sewing in your summer plans? I think I am going to set a goal of finishing my apple core English paper pieced top this summer. I have to admit, I am a slob when it comes to sewing. I sew on top of sewing. If I'm working on one project and want to start something else, I just push the first one to the side of the table and commence to cut and work on the next one. I don't know how I keep up with anything but this is a usual pattern for me. Yesterday, I was so entrenched in the FSU bag I was making that the project from the day before just got shoved into the magazine with the pattern and left onto the edge of the ... My friend let me borrow her Accuquilt to try it out. She has a lot of dies but not a lot of ones that I would want to have. I would want strip sets, like Bonnie Hunter advocates. However I tried it out yesterday when our power was out due to a horrendous storm we had here. I attacked a pile of frayed but clean pieces of children's flannel and now have a pile of neat 6.5 inch squares and bricks. And a trash can full of scraps! Carol Fri, 14 Mar 2014 13:27:42 EST Anyone know how to remove the applique glue? I was appliqu'ing circles and it's been awhile since I've appliqued.

I ironed on the heat glue to the back of the fabric. I then ironed on the fabric to be appliqued onto my backing. Somehow I managed to get some of that adhesive glue from the back to the front of the fabric. As I have limited fabric left over I don't want to have to redo this. But tomorrow the high will be only in the low 40's and down to the 20's tomorrow night. I so look forward to consistent warm weather so I can get some planting done.

What are you looking forward to this spring? I've been thinking of not doing a traditional binding which is totally separate from the backing. My backing is larger then my top as I'm sure most of your are. I have been playing with the idea of trimming the backing so its 2-3" larger then the top. Trim the batting so its about 1-2" larger then the top. Then turn the backing over and sewing it (turned under) to the top.

This is in lieu of a separate binding.

Sewing the sides down turned over. Then the top and bot... Fri, 20 Sep 2013 08:21:23 EST fall weather make me want to quilt All summer I had no desire to quilt none at all. I did make corn hole bags and my daughter a sun dress but that was all I cared to do. I didnt drool over magazines and get great ideas. I didnt stand and ponder my shelves of fabric . BUT the weather dropped to 70 and its like a guy looking forward to hunting season. I have taken on a bunch of orders for blankets most of them are for christmas but a few are baby shower gifts. I have came up with some great ideas for baby blankets I want to make... Wed, 18 Sep 2013 21:45:43 EST WHY DO YOU STASH? I was trying to go on a fabric diet and was doing pretty well until recently starting coming home with fabric again. Smack me! BUT, yesterday I wanted to make a Christmas Table Runner in preparation for a Sew Simple PIneapples class I'm helping with in October. So I pulled out my Christmas stash and found a bundle of Jinny Beyer vintage Christmas that had been donated to me and proceeded to make the three squares required. Then I looked around for sashing fabric and voila, already had it.... Mon, 16 Sep 2013 09:18:32 EST Flying Geese Tutorial I get daily postings from Lori at Bee in My Bonnet. We are big Florida State Seminole fans and our living room is garnet and gold with sports and football stuff all over. I am getting ready to order some fabric for new drapries and I thought it would be appropriate for me to make a Seminole Patchwork throw for over the sofa which is a garnet colored chenille. And we have a gold chair and ottoman and a leather red recliner. The draperies are a white background with gold embroidery in a moroccan desi... Wed, 4 Sep 2013 12:29:09 EST Do you have a design wall? I use my king size bed for my design wall, however, I put a plastic, flannel backed table cloth down, plastic side on the bed. Then when I lay out my blocks they stick to the flannel side and I can carry it to where ever I need to. No re arranging every time you go to work on the quilt. It is portable and works well.
Thu, 29 Aug 2013 13:22:01 EST gluten free I am new to celiac and don't have the slightest idea how to work the program. Sat, 24 Aug 2013 15:35:44 EST LOSING MY MIND (FABRIC) I usually have 3 or 4 projects going on at once, in piles, waiting for me to come back to them. So I was working on some exploding pineapple blocks by Karin Hallaby and had a few cut along with the book. I moved them somewhere. Can't find them anywhere. Can't even find the book. I've been working on cleaning up my room, but honestly, where oh where could they be! Sew frustrating as I would like to work on some this weekend. Sewing zippy strings is getting a bit boring so I need a diver... Sat, 24 Aug 2013 11:22:10 EST My Voyager is sick again. Yesterday I was merrily quilting along with my Voyager and at the end of the row the presser foot would not raise. So I took it apart (again) and everything turns and moves, but the cog on the presser foot lift does not move the shaft collar to raise the foot. I watched a video on how to fix it, and everything looks right. DH is going to work on it today, but he did send an e-mail to Nolting (they bought Hinterberg that sells Voyagers) to see about trading it in on one of theirs. We are b... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 09:21:25 EST Things to do on a Rainy Day! Here in Sunny Florida it hasn't been so sunny all summer! Rain has been in the forecast nearly everyday since April. We are grateful for the rain to fill our reservoirs and eliminate the need to run the sprinklers, but come on, Deluge after deluge is so foreign to Florida except during hurricanes. A hurricane this year would devastate us with the flooding! At any rate, today proves to be another rainy day and so I'm setting my quilting hat on. After church I'm heading for the sewing room... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 08:10:01 EST Round Robin Center Block idea needed Hello, Next month I need to have a center block for the next round robin in our local quilt guild. This will be my 3rd. I have done a paper pieced Alaskan Star block and a Mariners Compass block. But I need a new idea for this upcoming one due in September. I was thinking maybe something Chrismas-y but I have no ideas. I am just drawing a blank this time. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks so much Lisa Tue, 13 Aug 2013 11:17:00 EST Quilts from Thrifting!

s-collection.html

Now here is a lady who takes thrifting to a new level. She collects shirts from thrift stores for her stash and creates quilts from them. I wonder if she ever buys new fabric! And think of the button collection she must have! I love scrappy quilts. I am sending a finished quilt to the cousin whom we stayed with on our trip and today I made 2 pillow shams out of the leftovers from the quilt. Then I took the rest of the scraps and carefully ironed and folded them and put them in a plastic storage bag. When I say scraps, I mean, 1 to 1.5 inch strips and small squares and triangles. I hate throwing anything away but at least I got it out of a big scrap bag, used some of it today and put it in a small scrap bag. I... Sat, 3 Aug 2013 18:15:25 EST August stash/weight reduction challenge OK, so July was a big bust for me. If I keep this up I will have to take some of my quilts apart so I can increase my stash as much as my weight. Not really, but it does feel that way today. I learned this in a class at the quilt shop. They sell a template, but I really think you could do this with out one. You have 4 fabrics 16x22, and 2 pieces of iron on fleece type pellon. You put 1 fleeced and one regular right side facing. Then you sew it and you only sew around 1/2 of the oval; then you flip one of the "wrong sides" over the sewed side. Put the next fabric right sides and repeat the se... Carol Fri, 5 Jul 2013 09:21:41 EST July weight/stash reduction challenge I am sad to report I did not reduce my weight in June, but I did reduce my stash by a bit. I made pillow cases for the children of my co-workers and made 2 baby quilts for tornado survivors. In July I will get back on track and lose 2 pounds and make a block for each one. Thu, 4 Jul 2013 17:23:55 EST July 2013 goals/re olutions Here it is, the middle of the year. I do hope everyone is doing well with your goals and resolutions.

I haven't been logging like I should, but I have been writing everything down. I'm getting back on track, but still have a ways to go. For July I will:
1) be back on my proper nutrition
2) finish cleaning/organizing my sewing room
3) finish 2 UFOs

Thu, 4 Jul 2013 17:21:16 EST What do you think of as a quilt? Growing up our quilts were always "blankets" used on the beds as cover and draped a few inches over the edge of the mattress. There would be a bedspread on top of the bed that was folded down (or removed at night) to reveal a brightly colored/patterned quilt underneath. But the quilts I am seeing displayed on websites now have the quilt going all the way to the floor. That would make a queen quilt large and king size quilt HUGE (especially with our big thick mattresses these days).
<BR... Yesterday I was cleaning out the fridge and I chopped up veggies that were going by and needed to be used or pitched. An onion, end of a head of lettuce, some outer cabbage leaves, a bag of baby carrots, limp celery, peppers and a soft apple. I covered with water and then simmered for about 2 hours. Then I strained off the liquid and threw the veggies away. It made an awesome base for vegetable soup. Slightly sweet, I think the carrots an... Mon, 10 Jun 2013 09:41:44 EST Anyone from Minnesota? So I decided I wanted to make a cityscape night sky wallhanging with a yellow taxi in the street. I have all the fabrics and just need to get it planned out. However, yesterday we went to see The Great Gatsby and I'm thinking I want to replicate the mansion that Gatsby lived in and place his yellow Dussenberg Auto in front of it. I might even try to embroider his l... Mon, 3 Jun 2013 07:44:16 EST Moda Schoolhouse

_embedded&v=YdfbwOfYW_Q

This is a video of the Portland Moda Designer's Schoolhouse. I went outside my comfort zone and did a design which was very complicated. I knew it was not going to lay flat but I'm stubborn and I was going to force it. I stretched it and really reduced the puffiness but it still doesn't lay flat.

I was going to do a QAYG (Quilt as you Go) so I could really quilt the devil out of the center to flatten it as much as possible and then add borders. Sat, 18 May 2013 18:49:19 EST Quilting set aside for now As much as I would like to spend the day sewing and quilting, it is not to be. My MIL passed away last night and there is much to do to prepare for the memorial and to welcome visitors and family to our home. Must I say that there is fabric everywhere? You know what I mean. This is a good way to put things away. Carol Sat, 18 May 2013 09:05:01 EST Broccoli question Do you measure your broccoli by the spear, or by the cup? Raw or cooked? I was just looking at the calories for broccoli and was wondering why a 5 inch stalk of broccoli could go from 10 calories to 49 calories just by cooking? Or that one cup of raw chopped broccoli is 24 calories and one cup of cooked chopped broccoli is 54 calories. What is it about cooking that more than doubles the calories? My grandmother, mother & aunt were quilters but I don't think they thought I was serious when I would ask them to show me how. So a few years ago I took a couple classes, made my first quilt (ok, really my second, you see, I made my first one for my son 20 years ago but didn't really know what I was doing th... I needed more batting so went to my local Joanne's and spotted a fusable batting for both the top and bottom. Never heard of it and I so much HATE basting thought I would give it a try.

Anyone else try it. I suspect I'll have to do some basting but I'm hoping it will be a lot easier . Sat, 26 Jan 2013 16:16:28 EST Anyone do an Art (Picture) Wall Hanging? Hi,
Has anyone ever done an art wall hanging. The kind with bits and chunks of fabric that you just stipple over? I want to do one for a girlfriend for her birthday in April. It would have to be simple as I have never done one. I guess it would be a picture quilt?

Do you cover it with netting and stipple over that. I think Bev had a site to look at a while back and I thought I kept the site, but alas it is gone.
Thanks Sat, 26 Jan 2013 10:25:33 EST 1-25 Weekend Fun This week I have been using my crock pot everyday. I can put dinner on in the morning and it is ready at night. Usually there is enough for us to have lunch the next day. My favorite so far is potato, onion, (touch of salt) and pork chops layered and covered with mushroom soup. Recipe said 6 hours on high, but I did 2 on high and 4 on low (crock pot temps vary) and it was nice.

Do you have a favorite crock pot recipe you can share. My name is Annette and I live in West Palm Beach, Florida. I am new to quilting. I tried to get into it a few years ago and started a quilt but I had no idea how many resources were out there and gave up. I am back into it in full mode and have actually just completed my first table topper (yay me!).
1. I not only love quilting, but crochet, knitting, sewing, working with clay and a bunch of other crafts!!
2. I learned at 35 years old that I was adopted. (I'm 37 now) <B... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 13:29:30 EST Wash or not to wash Do you wash your fabric before using it?

I do. It gets the chemicals and extra dye out and shows the true grain of the fabric.

But I have good friends who don't. What do you think? Wed, 16 Jan 2013 01:09:56 EST Joining you from Northern California I am 61 years old, live in northern California, and have a lot of weight to lose. I've only been quilting for about 6 years but I've enjoyed taking a lot of classes to improve my skills and can now almost sew a straight line (I'll never be totally good at this because I don't really care enough)

I started sparkpeople back in 2009, lost about 70 lbs with additional help from another program and then just stopped doing anything. So I have begun cleaning and organizing storage areas and closets, and piecing batting pieces together. How do you spend your yucky rainy days? Sat, 12 Jan 2013 09:42:14 EST Fabric and Memories I decided this afternoon that my coffee table in the living room needs a table runner. So I went through my quilting stash and found three fabrics that my Mom had picked out for me to make placemats for her. There was just enough left for a table runner. It turned out gorgeous and what sweet memories it brings back of shopping with my Mom.

How many of you have fabric like this that brings back wonderful memories? What are those memories?
