I just rejoined SP after some years I was thrilled to see such a large group devoted to quilting!!! You may recognize my username from various quilt forums. I love sew-alongs and swaps. I am no perfectionist, but have a general goal to improve my stitching.
I am married and have a son, daughter-in-law and one granddaughter. who will be 3 in May. Also 2 dogs, a black mouth cur and a mini schnauzer. My favorite exercises are walking and canoeing. Sun, 26 Feb 2017 18:14:27 EST Lent starts March 1st ... Carol Wed, 22 Feb 2017 08:27:56 EST Photo scanning question I have been working on organizing thousands of pictures from many family members and trying to get them into reasonable collections. I am now having strange things happen with my scanner. I try to scan photo's in "groups" (by year, event, family of origin ...) then transfer them to an external hard drive which will hold the entire collection and delete them from the SD card in the scanner. However, when I scan the next group the preview pictures are not the ones I scanned but previously s... Wed, 8 Feb 2017 23:07:40 EST FEBRUARY UFO We can list the UFO we are going to finish this month right here on this thread. Note, I said, finish. I am relisting Fractured because as soon as I get the two bags made that I'm working on for the shop, that is next on the list. It will be sewn together this month! I guarantee it. Carol Wed, 1 Feb 2017 07:36:47 EST February nutrition challenge I have a Feb goal to eat a fresh vegetable daily. February may not seem like a good month to do this, but I think it will force me to try some new vegetables. So my challenge to you is to eat a fresh (non canned or frozen) vegetable daily. It does not have to be a new to you vegetable, just a fresh one. Tue, 31 Jan 2017 23:11:29 EST February 2017 goals/re olutions Here we are entering February already. I did well on my January resolutions. I think I missed 2 days exercise, but did all the others. So for Feb I plan to continue them and add 3 more.

February goals:
1) Organize/improve something in my home daily
2) Eat a fresh vegetable daily
3) Learn something new Tue, 31 Jan 2017 23:04:14 EST Need some sashing input, please. Started working on the sashing for the wedding quilt. The picture I'm using for a pattern used a sashing the same size as the strips in the block. But I'm not sure I want it that wide so I put some samples on the design wall, but still can't decide. There will be green corner stones if I use the wider one.

Sun, 29 Jan 2017 21:53:39 EST Hello quilters! Just joining this group. I live in Nelson BC and have been quilting for about 16 years. I love all techniques and genres of quilting. Presently I am working on several large projects. A double wedding ring quilt for my daughter and her husband, a Piecemakers quilt which I'm hand quilting and a Dear Jane quilt which I'm hand piecing. I also love doing art quilts, dying fabric and am just starting down the road of scrap quilting. I have lots of fabric as I worked in a quilt store for 10 ye... Sun, 29 Jan 2017 20:55:43 EST FEBRUARY UFO AND JANUARY UPDATES Its time to be thinking about your next UFO out of the gate. Did you have time to finish January? I did not because of the mystery but I still have 4 days left to work on fractured and since I will finish the mystery today, it is next up on my plate. After I tidy up a bit. I may carry fractured into February but I need to also start thinking about the next UFO I want to finish. How about you? Fri, 13 Jan 2017 14:11:13 EST February Charm Swap - Red While sorting our scraps, lets collect up some extra red charms to share for February. I don't have a lot of red scraps, but will let you know what I come up with. Please post if you have some to share. Sat, 7 Jan 2017 23:29:13 EST January fun-cabin fever ideas The past 2 days have been full of rain. After almost 120 days of drought I'm not going to complain. It has cut into my daily walks and hammock naps, but that is ok. I'd rather have the water in the lake. The grands have been cooped up and stir crazy cause they can't play outside and their friends are not at home. So I know you ladies can come up with some interesting ways to spend a rainy/snowy day inside (besides sewing or watching movies).

Mon, 2 Jan 2017 01:03:34 EST January nutrition challenge I thought I had cut back on my processed foods, but I have discovered I can do better. So my challenge for January is to use as little processed foods as possible. I have a LOT of home grown fruits and vegetables in the freezer and canned. I don't have any excuse to not be eating home prepared meals. Mon, 2 Jan 2017 00:50:17 EST January 2017 goals and resolutions Here we are at the start of a new year, can you believe it? I may not have reached all my goals for 2016, but I do feel like I made a good effort. For 2017 I intend to concentrate on improving my health and life rather than losing weight. I do wish to lower my lipids and blood pressure, and improve my A1C, so I am going to concentrate on less processed foods and regular exercise. Hopefully that will lead me to weight loss. Remember, it takes 21 days to create a habit, good or bad. So b... Sun, 1 Jan 2017 22:49:35 EST JANUARY UFO 2017 Starting this month, we will have a UFO challenge where we pick one UFO that has been languishing in the UFO pile and finish it. I had previously selected a different UFO but I think that the one I want to finish came from a workshop with the guild in April. That UFO is:
1. Fractured. Everything is cut out and ready to sew. Just need to finish it.

I'm not listing any other UFO or project until I finish Fractured! What is the one UFO you want to finish in January? ... Sun, 1 Jan 2017 08:34:22 EST Organizing Scraps - Ideas? Happy New Year, Everyone!

One of my goals this year is to tame the scraps that I've accumulated but I could use some advice...a lot of what I have is oddly shaped, with a chunk or two cut out and I'd like to trim everything up into usable sizes. I'm thinking 2 1/2 inch squares, 5 1/2 inch squares, and 2 1/2 inch strips seem to be the most popular but my math is terrible and I want to cut things up so that the smaller strips and squares can be paired with the larger ones and not com... Sun, 1 Jan 2017 05:15:32 EST Let's get Carol organized. Not that I am the most organized person in the world, but I have developed some things to help me over the years. We all know Carol (4dognight) hates to waste anything, so let's chip in and help her organize.

The first thing I had to learn was just because I don't use it doesn't mean it goes to waste. I'm sure there are home ec classes, girl scouts, girls (or boys) clubs, art studios, or civic organizations that would be happy to use your scraps. I have put bags of scraps in ou... Tue, 27 Dec 2016 22:53:38 EST JANUARY UFO Starting a new thread here for 2017. Each month I will post a spot for you to list the UFO that you will be working on for the month. The first month, of course, is January. Start thinking about the UFO that you really want to finish next year and list it here. Maybe we can motivate ourselves to finish something.
I'll be continuing to work on the mystery quilt but I have several UFO's I should finish.
1. While I was walking the other day I was thinking about my goals and how I felt about "accomplishing" them. I thought about the goals I have been having and wondered if they are really helping me reach a bigger goal. When I finished my walk and got back in the warm house, I realized I felt better because I had walked, not because I got to check something off a list of things to do. I also realized I'm not 17 anymore. Things don't... Thu, 15 Dec 2016 23:51:45 EST All you dog lovers! and maybe cat's too. Let's try sharing some here.

One year I opened vegetable cans upside down and washed them well. Then I packed presents in them and glued the bottoms back on. Everyone was surprised to get cans of corn, beans, peas, etc. Sometimes I made personalized labels and glued them on the can. Just be very careful when gluing so the gift doesn't get stuck to the can. Thu, 1 Dec 2016 23:28:51 EST January Charm Swap - Whites Our first Scrappy Charm Swap will be in January. Thu, 1 Dec 2016 23:05:14 EST December 2016 nutrition challenge With the holidays in full swing and parties popping up everywhere sticking to a good nutrition program can be quite difficult. Your challenge for December is to eat only when you are hungry. No grazing the snacks co-workers bring in, no munching on leftovers just because they are there. Make a conscious effort to watch what you eat.

Personally, I eat about 5 times a day. I have smaller meals and eat more often, sometimes just a piece of fruit or yogurt between meals. However, measure your strips as you go along to prevent ripples! Do you have an antique quilt in your collection? I have one from my husband's grandmother made in the 30's and one from the early 1900's. My church was gifted a 30's Boston Common that quilted and bound and made into a fundraiser for supplies. I swore I would not do it this year and I'm really not fond of the colors because it is too close to the mystery of two years ago where I substituted purple for pink. And I literally just finished last year's mystery and it has been gifted to my son and daughter-in-law and I didn't even take a good picture of it. The colors a... Fri, 28 Oct 2016 08:25:33 EST New to Forum I am new to SparkPeople (just 3 days now) and very excited to find this group. I live in Wisconsin and have been quilting since the mid 90's. I really enjoy all aspects of quilting (both piecing and quilting). I do quilt all my own quilts on my Janome Horizon. I am very interested in loosing more weight (I have lost a considerable amount the past year and a half, but have recently gained back a few instead of continuing to loose). I really love all the tools and inspiration that SparkPeople h... Thu, 27 Oct 2016 13:58:32 EST QUILT SHOPS NEAR YOU? When I was at retreat, there were women from Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Alabama and Georgia. Most were moaning about the fact that there were no quilt shops near them or very few and not very good ones. My friend and I realized that we are sew fortunate where we live. There are literally 9 shops within an hours drive from us. Two are right down the street with Joann's as well. Today we are venturing to Margie's Sew Much Fun and A Quilter's Place in Crestview. I re threaded and when I started to sew again, the needle bar would not go completely down. I removed the bobbin and case, and the needle, but it still won't move up or down. I cannot see anything obviously holding it in place. Has anyone ever had this problem? I sent a note to the dealer and hope he will be able to help sinc... But the first "real quilt" I completed on my own was for my oldest DD's nursery 32 years ago. It was simply squares of yellow gingham and tied at the corners. It matched the curtains, bumper pads, etc that I made for her nursery and was not intended to be "used", just ... Tue, 9 Aug 2016 23:04:17 EST Q&L Participation Challenge Got your attention? Excellent article on prewashing. I rarely prewash anything except black and red. Most quilts are gifted and haven't had any complaints from the recipients yet. Always a first time. One of the things she suggests is that you don't have to use soap. She only rinses the fabric in a sink of hot water and if it appears to bleed, keeps rinses until it runs clear. Enjoy. She used an inexpensive (even for that time) muslin for the back and folded it to the front for the binding. I have put a collection of patches on the back, mostly from Girl Scouts when my girls were in scouting. Over the past 50 years the muslin has become very brittle and split in places, so I have removed the patches and plan to "re-quilt" it. The top is a simple brick pattern of double knit,... I am however going to have to buy some fabric to finish 2 tee-shirt quilts for my former boss. But she is paying for that so I don't think it will count. I buy patterns that sometimes never get made. On the fabric side, I buy things on sale and make sure I have enough of each go with item to make a quilt. I'll get 2 yards or more of a large print and smaller amounts of the accent or neutrals that go with it. Then I search for a pattern. That is why I keep all those magazines. We had two tables of donated items, one table was $2.00 and the other table was 50 cents.... Carol Tue, 10 Jun 2014 08:20:22 EST Shop Hops Has anyone gone on an organized shop hop? I signed up for an overnight one at a local quilt shop. It sounds like fun. Free gifts and games, good food, different ideas, etc.

I am just wondering what to expect. Anyone do something like this before? Mon, 9 Jun 2014 08:44:07 EST June 2014 goals and resolutions Well, I did not do well in May. I have had some breathing problems and the doctor took me off my bike and limited my exercise till they finish tests. That won't be till the middle of June, so not much riding in June either. Perhaps that will help me do more sewing, but it will require some strict diet control. I really like the produce one. Wed, 28 May 2014 11:09:40 EST Fabric Twine from scraps

-handmade-scrap-fabric-twine.html

Found this during my morning roaming on the internet. Carol Wed, 28 May 2014 08:55:00 EST ARE YOU A BAG LADY? Something we have not discussed here is making bags! How did we miss that? I love making bags and have made oodles! One of my favorites is "Projects to Go" by WhistlePigCreek. I have mde and sold several, some with correctly placed pockets and some not. Its kind of complicated.
