This time last year I was nearing the 200 lb. mark! And since I'm not 6 ft tall, that was NOT a healthy weight for me. So I gave away all my "thin" clothes because I didn't think I'd ever wear them again, then bought a size larger jeans. But then last October DH and I came to the realization that we HAD TO find AND STAY ON a healthy lifestyle. He's lost over 30 lbs. and I, well, I lost 20 pounds! Sun, 18 Mar 2018 08:55:53 EST April 11-15 retreat I know this is short notice, but our retreat group on HOUZZ quilting forum is having a retreat April 11-15. We have had some members drop out and there are a few openings if anyone is interested. Price is $140 for the weekend and all you need are snacks for the snack table, clothes, charms for playing games, and things to sew. Everything else is provided, and there is a small quilt shop attached. We will have to prepare our meals, but that is pretty well covered. This is a new location f... Fri, 16 Mar 2018 00:08:54 EST Looking for advice.... I'm working on this wall hanging (Sunset by Arlene Walsh). Instructions include needle turn appliqué. Because of arthritis, I decided to use Lite Steam-a-Seam2 to attach appliqué pieces. I would appreciate any advice with topstitching around each piece. Should I use monofilament or cotton thread? What kind of stitch (straight along the edge, zigzag, blanket)? Or should I not stitch at all around pieces? Thank you for your time and suggestions.

<img src="http://photosaws.sparkpeop... Can't believe this landed in my inbox! You can make one quilt label from spoonflower for $5.00! I just paid $15 for one embroidered label! You can also have a sheet of labels printed up with your name on them and a space to write the quilt name and recipient. I might have to give this a go and see if I can figure it out. Mon, 1 Jan 2018 00:53:12 EST January 2018 goals and resolutions Hopefully we have all thought about our big goals and resolutions for 2018. But yearly goals/resolutions can seem so very daunting it is good to break them down into smaller ones. It takes 21 days to form a new habit, so I like to make monthly resolutions. By the end of the month I (hopefully) have formed a resolution into a habit that I can continue. The same goes for goals. Carol Sun, 31 Dec 2017 06:40:17 EST New Years Day plans Anyone have something special planned for New Years Eve and/or Day? Hubby will be working, but we will have a cup of coffee when he gets home. Perhaps I will do some sewing, who knows. New Year's Day we will have our traditional turnip greens, black eye peas, cornbread, and ham. Probably have some mashed cauliflower since we have grown to love it. It isn't supposed to get above freezing most of next week, so our exercise will probably be limited to treadmill and/or bike trainer. Fri, 29 Dec 2017 23:24:54 EST Preparing for 2018 Monday I will be posting the January goals/resolution thread, but I think it would be nice to look forward to the end of 2018 and think about what we would like to accomplish during the year. Then we can break our yearly goals into smaller (monthly or weekly) more manageable ones. It would also be nice to have a list of "bucket list" items we would like to complete. We all have them, some are quilt related, some are not, but let's start making an effort to mark some of them off. But I could not resist passing on this offer of $13.99 for a 2018 calendar that includes patterns each month for an entire scrappy quilt. I love scrappy and certainly have enough. Or I have fat quarter bundles as well. Those quilt calendars that you buy in Hallmark don't always work out and cost nearly as much. Carol Mon, 14 Aug 2017 08:37:13 EST INTRODUCTION TO TRIP AROUND THE WORLD!

ppy-trips-around-world.html

The Trip around the world quilt pattern has been around a long time and Bonnie has developed an easy way to make one. I just finished the Jurassic Park Quilt top in records time with a different technique but an easy one. Bonnie's version uses 2.5" scrappy strips! Carol Fri, 4 Aug 2017 08:46:43 EST BONNIE HUNTER INTERVIEW
//
-bonnie-hunter-interview/

I thought you would enjoy this interview with Bonnie Hunter about her quilting experience. Included are links to 3 of her scrappy patterns. I think I am going to try the scrappy bargello with 2.5" strips that I've been "saving". Enjoy. Carol Fri, 4 Aug 2017 08:10:36 EST Christmas Projects Okay Christmas is coming and the only one who is to get fat is the goose! What projects are you planning on for gift giving?

I want to make 2 totes for friends, a cloth book for youngest girl grandchild, a car quilt for on the floor for 1 grandson to run his trucks around. That is what I have so far.

I am, as always, looking for ideas!
Tue, 1 Aug 2017 11:58:33 EST AUGUST TAMING OUR SCRAPS 2017
//
V8ETTF0cUFEbmJsd1k/view

I decided I would start a new thread for taming our scraps each month. It is starting to get pretty overwhelming. Here is a really cute free pattern that uses 5 fat quarters. I have a fat quarter bundle that I've been waiting to use. Oh, I probably have more than one fat quarter bundle but I have one in mind for this. The pattern has you cut 3.5" squar... I'm sure there will be some duplicates if that is ok. Mon, 31 Jul 2017 22:48:48 EST August 2017 nutrition challenge Well, I had fun with red, white, and blue fruits/vegetables for July. Our garden is just about gone, and my parent's have planted a late one, but it won't be in for a while. I don't have any fresh picked veggies to eat. For August, let's eat a fruit with each meal, and stop eating when we are full. It is not necessary to be in the clean your plate club. Mon, 31 Jul 2017 22:24:10 EST AUGUST UFO I think my August UFO ought to be pulling out the quilt organizer book and filling it up with UFO's. Then on the first of January, I can attack one per month. If I would just stop and finish something instead of starting something else. Ok, I do finish things but not always in a fast fashion. Carol Mon, 31 Jul 2017 08:06:52 EST Free-motion quilting at home I want to be able to do free-motion quilting using my new Singer Superb, a basic machine with lots of different stitches. However, after lowering the feed dogs, they resume to the raised position while stitching is engaged. I made several attempts to lower the feed dogs using the lever switch in the back of the machine, but each time they rise automatically without me changing their setting. Again and again, the feed dogs pop up from the lowered position on their own after approximately 10 st... While I was walking the other day I was thinking about my goals and how I felt about "accomplishing" them. I thought about the goals I have been having and wondered if they are really helping me reach a bigger goal. When I finished my walk and got back in the warm house, I realized I felt better because I had walked, not because I got to check something off a list of things to do. I also realized I'm not 17 anymore. Things don't... Thu, 15 Dec 2016 23:51:45 EST All you dog lovers! and maybe cat's too. Let's try sharing some here.

One year I opened vegetable cans upside down and washed them well. Then I packed presents in them and glued the bottoms back on. Everyone was surprised to get cans of corn, beans, peas, etc. Sometimes I made personalized labels and glued them on the can. Just be very careful when gluing so the gift doesn't get stuck to the can. Thu, 1 Dec 2016 23:28:51 EST January Charm Swap - Whites Our first Scrappy Charm Swap will be in January. I swore I would not do it this year and I'm really not fond of the colors because it is too close to the mystery of two years ago where I substituted purple for pink. Thu, 12 May 2016 07:54:19 EST GARMENT SEWING 101

tchwork-dress-views-of-hong-kong.html

I started my sewing life as a garment sewer, making all of my clothing in my teens and twenties and early thirties. So I like to follow blogs that take old clothing and remake it into something new. Look at this cute patchwork dress! Although I wouldn't wear a dress like this it would make a super cute top! What a great use for scraps! Carol Mon, 9 May 2016 08:20:45 EST Cheats and Helps Lets start a thread of shortcuts we have learned.

I love black borders and bindings, so to make things simple I cut LOTS of 2 1/2 inch black strips and sew them together. That way I can just cut as much as I need for a project. Also, I only buy Kona black, because all blacks are not created equal. Fri, 6 May 2016 00:23:17 EST PREWASH OR NOT? Excellent article on prewashing. I rarely prewash anything except black and red. Most quilts are gifted and haven't had any complaints from the recipients yet. Always a first time. One of the things she suggests is that you don't have to use soap. She only rinses the fabric in a sink of hot water and if it appears to bleed, keeps rinses until it runs clear. Enjoy. Fri, 18 Mar 2016 12:02:12 EST Mid (and long) arm question I have a Fun Qulter 17 on a Hinterberg Stretch frame. Hubby added a dead bar so I don't have to keep raising the frame. When I do small quilts it works great, but I have noticed on the last queens I have done that the top creeps to the left. Does this mean the bars aren't parallel? I have measured and everything seems to be fine. I quilt mostly left to right from the front, so I would thing it would creep to the right.
<img src=" Thu, 10 Mar 2016 22:43:53 EST March 11-13 challenge One of One Day At A Time goals is to learn something new everyday. Fri, 1 Jan 2016 00:36:45 EST Question on "re-quilting" MANY years ago my grandmother made me what she called a "car quilt", what we now call a lap quilt. She used an inexpensive (even for that time) muslin for the back and folded it to the front for the binding. I have put a collection of patches on the back, mostly from Girl Scouts when my girls were in scouting. Over the past 50 years the muslin has become very brittle and split in places, so I have removed the patches and plan to "re-quilt" it. The top is a simple brick pattern of double knit,...
