SparkPeople Quilt and Lose Team Messageboard Okay, now where do you find mystery quilts? I just found out last year what a mystery quilt is (and participated in one!) but I am wondering what/where are the most popular ones found?

-I know that Bonnie Hunter does an advanced one in January (I think) each year

-Merry Mayhem also does one on January 1st and releases the clues each hour

Where else?
Sun, 15 May 2016 22:51:52 EST Where do you find your quilt patterns? I have been busy and in the last 2 weeks I have finished all of my WIPs - 2 baby quilts and 3 lap quilts.

So now I am free to start something new! I want something bright for my bed for the summer but I can't find a pattern I like. Usually when I see a quilt I like I save it and go back to it when it's time to make a quilt. Right now I only have 3 quilts I want to make but I don't want them for my bed. Plus I am not in the mood for those particular quilts ya know?

Where ... Sat, 14 May 2016 10:22:04 EST GARMENT SEWING 101

tchwork-dress-views-of-hong-kong.html

I started my sewing life as a garment sewer, making all of my clothing in my teens and twenties and early thirties. So I like to follow blogs that take old clothing and remake it into something new. Look at this cute patchwork dress! Although I wouldn't wear a dress like this it would make a super cute top! What a great use for scraps! Carol Mon, 9 May 2016 08:20:45 EST PREWASH OR NOT? Excellent article on prewashing. I rarely prewash anything except black and red. Most quilts are gifted and haven't had any complaints from the recipients yet. Always a first time. One of the things she suggests is that you don't have to use soap. She only rinses the fabric in a sink of hot water and if it appears to bleed, keeps rinses until it runs clear. Enjoy. The Inbox Jaunt has an amazing selections of quitling tutorials and motifs and thought I would share. One of the tops I have is shadow boxes with lots of white sashings and I want the sashings to be interesting. So I will go to her site and practice when I am ready. Which is nearing. There is a quilt along starting next week over at Patchwork posse featuring her "Busy Body Medallion Quilt." It looks like you could use up a lot of scraps by participating! Today I visited tryharder2014's page and I was amazed at how well she has done on her journey. 55 plus pounds in less than 2 years! I can do that if I just would try harder! Nice to know you but I don't know your name! Has anyone finished one and have a picture to share? I'm looking for some creative sashing ideas. Mon, 11 Apr 2016 22:36:33 EST Happy April Fools Day! What is the craziest thing you have done for April Fools Day?

Years ago I made my girls ice cream sundaes that were mashed potatoes and gravy. I have also made spaghetti that was cake icing with jelly sauce, and hamburgers that were thin mints. I don't know why they don't trust me anymore.

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 23:28:47 EST April 2016 stash/weight reduction challenge Ok, I forgot to weigh this morning. I have this big post-it note on my mirror that says "WEIGH", but still managed to forget. So I will weigh tomorrow, but don't think I have lost much. I did have 3 people at work last week tell me I looked thinner, so that is a good thing.

As for my stash, I didn't finish any UFO's so it didn't shrink much either. But once I get started on my Splendid Sampler blocks I'm sure it will. Thu, 31 Mar 2016 23:24:02 EST April nutrition challenge Looks like we had a pretty good March challenge. Thu, 31 Mar 2016 23:18:28 EST Making printable fabric Has anyone tried to make their own printable fabric using a formula of alum, washing soda and liquid softener? I want to make a genealogy quilt with pictures of my family. I ran across this formula on Pinterest and wondered if anyone else had used it. Fri, 18 Mar 2016 12:02:12 EST Mid (and long) arm question I have a Fun Qulter 17 on a Hinterberg Stretch frame. Hubby added a dead bar so I don't have to keep raising the frame. When I do small quilts it works great, but I have noticed on the last queens I have done that the top creeps to the left. Does this mean the bars aren't parallel? I have measured and everything seems to be fine. I quilt mostly left to right from the front, so I would thing it would creep to the right.
<img src=" Thu, 10 Mar 2016 22:43:53 EST March 11-13 challenge One of One Day At A Time goals is to learn something new everyday. Thu, 10 Mar 2016 22:31:25 EST March 2016 stash/weight reduction challenge I only lost 2 pounds last month, but I did lose. I have added the 1 pound to my March goals, so will try to lose 4 pounds in March. It isn't really noticeable, but my stash is also reducing. I finished 2 UFOs, used some backing pieces and strings. I did have to purchase some fabric for commissioned quilts, but that doesn't count, does it?

My goal for March is 4 pounds, finish 1 UFO using only stash.
Tue, 1 Mar 2016 00:16:36 EST March nutrition challenge March, the month of leprechauns, spring flowers, and Easter. Mon, 29 Feb 2016 23:43:26 EST Getting Rid of Stabilizer "Fuzzies" I used a nonwoven stabilizer to draw my quilting design for machine quilting, and most of it tore away, but there are still "fuzzies" in the places where stitching lines are close or cross. Any hints on getting them out? Wed, 24 Feb 2016 15:37:10 EST FAVORITE BAG PATTERNS I like making bags but it is difficult to find patterns that work for my needs. I like the Barbados Pattern by Pink Sand Beach Designs and the Margo Bag by Lazy Girl Designs. THere are always parts of a bag pattern that I don't like. The handles on the Margo bag are not my favorite way of putting them on but it has worked. I also prefer a zipper to a magnet. What are your favorite bag patterns? Sun, 31 Jan 2016 22:27:25 EST Feb 2016 weight loss/stash reduction Well, I did lose 3 pounds in Jan, but since they are the ones I gained in Dec, I'm not sure they really count. But I did reduce my stash a bit by finishing the tee shirt top and the I-spy top. Fri, 1 Jan 2016 00:36:45 EST Question on "re-quilting" MANY years ago my grandmother made me what she called a "car quilt", what we now call a lap quilt. She used an inexpensive (even for that time) muslin for the back and folded it to the front for the binding. I have put a collection of patches on the back, mostly from Girl Scouts when my girls were in scouting. Over the past 50 years the muslin has become very brittle and split in places, so I have removed the patches and plan to "re-quilt" it. The top is a simple brick pattern of double knit,... Thu, 31 Dec 2015 21:50:17 EST 2016 will soon be here As most of you know, I am not a fan of New Year's Resolutions. I make smaller monthly ones which should be easier to keep. I do, however, like to set long term goals. Now is a good time to be thinking about what you would like to accomplish in 2016 and make plans to do it. Losing 40 pounds sounds daunting, but when you plan for 3 pounds a month it becomes reachable. January 1st we will begin our new adventure. Sat, 19 Dec 2015 23:45:47 EST WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I plan to do minimal quilting on the actual tee shirts, but some of them are large enough to require some. There are shapes in most them that lend themselves to being outlined, so that is good. Sun, 1 Nov 2015 23:03:08 EST Nov 2015 weight/stash reduction While I didn't lose any weight in October, I did not gain any either. I guess that is a small accomplishment. I did however manage to reduce my stash. I finished 2 quilts for the Pinhoti Trail Run, and used a piece for the back of my friend's Carpenter Star quilt (queen size). I am however going to have to buy some fabric to finish 2 tee-shirt quilts for my former boss. But she is paying for that so I don't think it will count. Sat, 31 Oct 2015 07:46:42 EST HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS So yesterday I had to wear some sort of costume to my weigh in to get a free week. So I thought I would wrap myself in a quilt. Mon, 13 Oct 2014 16:15:47 EST BONNIE HUNTER'S NEW MYSTERY 2014

rise-quiltville-winter-mystery.html

Bonnie has posted the requirements for her new mystery quilt to start next month. I am deviating from her color selections to use fabrics I purchased in Maine last summer, been looking for a pattern. If it doesn't work out, I will go back to her colors which I has stacks of anyway. Sun, 12 Oct 2014 11:46:07 EST October 2014 stash/weight reduction Well, didn't reach my weight goal for Sept, only lost 2 of the 5 pounds I regained, but that is at least 2 in the right direction. The stash reduction is going better. I have cut all my scraps into usable squares and strips and bundled them into "kits" for blocks. These will be going to my retreat with me next week.

My goal for Oct is to lose 4 pounds and continue working on my stash. Fri, 3 Oct 2014 00:28:50 EST October 2014 Goals and Resolutions Well, things are going pretty well. I am back on the bike, but can't ride more than about 10 miles. We rode 15 on the tandem today, but DH had to do most of the work toward the end. This breathing thing has really upset my plans. But the rooms are getting organized, diet is improving, and I am at least riding.

For October my resolutions are:

1) ride at least twice a week, and use my trainer twice a week
2) get fully back on my nutrition and record daily
3) ... Fri, 3 Oct 2014 00:22:49 EST Challenge quilt question The Gulf Coast Quilting Society has posted their challenge quilt for 2015 and it is a red and white quilt. Only red and white. Would that mean I could not use a red Christmas print with another color in it, say green? How strict are these things? I had trouble last year with black and white and one other color with no shades. Had to make 3 entries before I got one I thought would fly. Carol Wed, 1 Oct 2014 16:38:43 EST I need help in choosing a machine. I bought a used Bernina 830 from the local dealer in Febuary, and have had nothing but problems with it, even after I took the "Mastery Class". Well it's out of commission again, and I have to take it in for service again. I've made up my mind ( think... LOL) to get rid of it immediately after its fixed. I've been thinking of getting a Brother Embroidery machine, the 770 is what I'm think of. I've just started a custom made quilt business, and I need a reliable embroidery machine. I have a ne... Mon, 29 Sep 2014 07:56:13 EST Quilt armoire questions Hello ladies! I would, someday, love to own a quilt armoire. I don't know if this is something that can be readily purchased or if it has to be custom-built for me. Any suggestions? Where does one even begin to look (online)? Wed, 24 Sep 2014 14:59:03 EST Quilt Books on sale
C&T publishing has many books on sale, including ones that are $2.00. I found a board book I think I can cut apart and make luggage tags with for $2 so of course I had to add a few more books to make it worth the postage. Carol Fri, 19 Sep 2014 08:29:37 EST Sept 2014 weight loss/stash reduction Well, I seem to be doing better with the stash reduction than the weight loss. I finished the forest service quilt and a top for the trail run prize. Hopefully this will continue. Sun, 14 Sep 2014 23:30:02 EST Sept 2014 goals/re olutions I am so sorry this is late this month, but here goes. For Sept I will

1) continue re-organizing/de-cluttering one room weekly
2) get back on my nutrition program (this is a MUST)
3) get back on my bike Sun, 14 Sep 2014 23:19:01 EST Back again. This has been a very strange month. We were camping the first week (no computer, no cell phone, nice and quiet) and came home on Sunday to find the air conditioner wasn't. It took a week to get the parts in and get it fixed. With it 89 inside, I stayed elsewhere for most of the week. Finally have things going well, a quilt ready to go in the frame, and challenge wall hanging almost finished. Wed, 20 Aug 2014 12:50:48 EST Where do you store your Quilt Patterns Where do you store your quilt patterns?

I use a very large, very deep 3 ring binder and plastic presentation sheets to slip 2 patterns into. (I will soon need another one) One of these days I will put tab pages into it so I can find a pattern faster. For now I just flip through until I find it. The pattern I am working on goes into a file folder and is placed in my pot lid rack where I keep my quilting "bible", so it is at my finger tips. Tue, 19 Aug 2014 08:14:47 EST I have a question about quilting frames I recently purchase a Bernina 830 and I'm wanting to put it on a frame. I understand I will have to have a computer or iPad for the designs, but I don't understand what makes the sewing machine move on the frame! I have asked at two stores and all I get is a blank look. Either my question is not clear or maybe it's a silly question, but I have already spent a lot on a cool machine that I like & the frame & softwear isn't inexpensive either (thankfully I already have the computer), and I don'... Carol Mon, 4 Aug 2014 08:10:29 EST August Bobbin challenge With school starting back soon, some of us will have more time to sew, some will have less. I would like to challenge everyone to find time to sew at least one bobbin full of thread every day. This will include any used in a long-arm. I have been trying to do that this past week and have found it easier than I thought. So lets all try to find about 15 minutes to sew this month. Sun, 3 Aug 2014 00:03:57 EST August weight/stash reduction I guess I am at neutral. I have used a lot of strips and a large blue piece for a quilt back, but had to order some green for backing (okay, a lot of green would be more accurate). But it will be used on the queen quilt and 5 wall hangings for the forest service. So my stash is actually getting smaller faster than I am. That is changing in August. I am gonna start working on ME again! Sat, 2 Aug 2014 23:55:18 EST August 2014 Goals and Resolutions Here it is August, school is starting, and summer is ending. We have spent a lot of time camping and traveling with the grands this summer and my exercise routine has suffered for it. While I have managed to get my walking in, my eating habits and cycling have not fared as well. I did finish one quilt for a friend in July and the forest service quilt should be finished this week. So for August my resolutions are:

1) Get my nutrition back under control and record daily
2) F... I've got some fabric I didn't know what to do with and will try it! It has exactly 6 repeats which is perfect. Anyone done one? Carol Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:06:29 EST Christmas Sewing Plans Well, since Berry4 told us we only have 11 more days left in July, the year is half over, what are your sewing plans for Christmas?
I am not making any gifts for Christmas this year, however, I will be making a wall hanging out of Christmas Stockings Blocks from a swap. Carol Thu, 10 Jul 2014 09:18:33 EST KING SIZE QUILT IDEAS I bought some beautiful Amy Butler fabric on sale and I want to make a King size quilt for son and daughter-in-law. I want a very simple pattern as some of the fabric is a beautiful border. I'm thinking of 12.5 inch squares sewn together of the assorted fabrics that I have and then the border. Needs to be about 108" square. Anyone have a king size pattern that is similar to this idea? Carol Tue, 8 Jul 2014 11:16:48 EST July 2014 goals and resolutions OK, not being alowed to ride my bike for the past 6 weeks has taken it's toll. And I did not do well enough on watching my calories. And taking trips every other week hasn't helped either. So I have shamefully gained 5 pounds. Now that I am allowed to ride again, it is too blamed hot for me (I don't ride if it is in the 90's). Carol Sun, 23 Feb 2014 09:51:31 EST Pins I thought I'd check to see if this question had been asked before; but when I saw that there were 842 topics, I decided to ask again rather than scroll through all of them!

What are your favorite pins for machine piecing? I really like(d) the "flower head" pins by Clover because they were nice and flat, but the flower heads tend to pull off if there is the least resistance by the fabric. And they can seem a bit thick for some fabrics, as well as being rather pricey. But I've h... Sat, 15 Feb 2014 15:13:21 EST Weekend Fun 2-14-2014 This one is almost too easy. The quilt I made from that was one of the first quilts I ever made. Awhile back Quilter's Newsletter magazine asked for reader submissions, so I sent them a photo and little story about the swap, and they are going to run it in their June/July edition! Of course, my only compensation is a free magazine, but still, it will be fun to see! No making plans, just see what the day brings. Sat, 18 Jan 2014 21:24:55 EST Has anyone used the backing as your binding? I've been thinking of not doing a traditional binding which is totally separate from the backing. My backing is larger then my top as I'm sure most of your are. I have been playing with the idea of trimming the backing so its 2-3" larger then the top. Trim the batting so its about 1-2" larger then the top. Then turn the backing over and sewing it (turned under) to the top.

This is in lieu of a separate binding.

Sewing the sides down turned over. Then the top and bot... Here it is, the end of an old year and time to think about what we would like to accomplish in the new one. I have been challenged with some health issues these last 2 months and that has changed my expectations. I had my gall bladder removed in November and found out I have liver disease. I have had to drastically change my diet and exercise routines and was cautioned not to lose more than 2 pounds a week due to possible worsening of the liver condition, so weight loss will be slower tha... I've got plenty of sewing to do and I need to get a handle on some of these UFO's I've got hanging around. I ordered some really cute Christmas fabric called Tree Shopping in White with coordinates. Instead of trying to come up with a difficult quilt, I think I will just keep it simple and make large rectangles and squares. Then I'll have a quilt for my bed next year. Yes, that is what I'll do. I a... Mon, 30 Dec 2013 07:48:35 EST Need a Bee Gift idea!! I need some ideas for a Dirty Santa gift for a small Bee that I am in. Thu, 21 Nov 2013 18:27:00 EST I'm home I posted this on my other thread, but thought I'd better start a new one. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Today is much better than yesterday. I got pictures of my liver and it is pretty and pink, but he did the biopsy anyway. The gall bladder was large and adhered to my liver so it took a bit of manipulation to get it out. He said it had been inflamed for a long time, but I had just learned to live with it. I got a shower and hubby changed bandages today and I am doing well. To... Thu, 14 Nov 2013 20:27:14 EST Machine Quilting Question I'm trying to learn how to machine quilt. I took a class, but it wasn't all that helpful. I'd like to know if you think it's important to bring the bobbin thread up to the top whenever you begin sewing. I'm having some trouble mastering that technique. Do you do it when you start AND stop? All opinions gratefully accepted! Wed, 13 Nov 2013 13:56:33 EST Just a note I will be having gall bladder surgery and liver biopsy this Wed. Hopefully a quick recovery and good report. I will keep everyone posted. I've been working on cleaning up my room, but honestly, where oh where could they be! Sew frustrating as I would like to work on some this weekend. Sewing zippy strings is getting a bit boring so I need a diver... Sat, 24 Aug 2013 11:22:10 EST My Voyager is sick again. Yesterday I was merrily quilting along with my Voyager and at the end of the row the presser foot would not raise. So I took it apart (again) and everything turns and moves, but the cog on the presser foot lift does not move the shaft collar to raise the foot. I watched a video on how to fix it, and everything looks right. DH is going to work on it today, but he did send an e-mail to Nolting (they bought Hinterberg that sells Voyagers) to see about trading it in on one of theirs. We are b... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 09:21:25 EST Things to do on a Rainy Day! Here in Sunny Florida it hasn't been so sunny all summer! Rain has been in the forecast nearly everyday since April. We are grateful for the rain to fill our reservoirs and eliminate the need to run the sprinklers, but come on, Deluge after deluge is so foreign to Florida except during hurricanes. A hurricane this year would devastate us with the flooding! At any rate, today proves to be another rainy day and so I'm setting my quilting hat on. After church I'm heading for the sewing room... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 08:10:01 EST Round Robin Center Block idea needed Hello, Next month I need to have a center block for the next round robin in our local quilt guild. This will be my 3rd. I have done a paper pieced Alaskan Star block and a Mariners Compass block. But I need a new idea for this upcoming one due in September. I was thinking maybe something Chrismas-y but I have no ideas. I am just drawing a blank this time. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks so much Lisa Tue, 13 Aug 2013 11:17:00 EST Quilts from Thrifting!

s-collection.html

Now here is a lady who takes thrifting to a new level. She collects shirts from thrift stores for her stash and creates quilts from them. I wonder if she ever buys new fabric! And think of the button collection she must have! A related post would be Barbara Brackmans story on rag fairs! I love these interesting tidbits!

205&group=0&frame_type=a&blog... Sat, 10 Aug 2013 09:07:21 EST ARE YOU A SCRAPPY NUT? I love scrappy quilts. I am sending a finished quilt to the cousin whom we stayed with on our trip and today I made 2 pillow shams out of the leftovers from the quilt. Then I took the rest of the scraps and carefully ironed and folded them and put them in a plastic storage bag. When I say scraps, I mean, 1 to 1.5 inch strips and small squares and triangles. I hate throwing anything away but at least I got it out of a big scrap bag, used some of it today and put it in a small scrap bag. I... Sat, 3 Aug 2013 18:15:25 EST August stash/weight reduction challenge OK, so July was a big bust for me. If I keep this up I will have to take some of my quilts apart so I can increase my stash as much as my weight. Not really, but it does feel that way today. For August I must bet back on track !!!

Hope everyone else is doing better reducing. Fri, 2 Aug 2013 12:12:51 EST August 2013 goals/re olutions My how time flies, here it is August already. I didn't track my food like I wanted for July, but I did keep a log. For August I must start tracking better. The grands will be back in school soon so I can get back on the bike. Gotta get them to riding with me even if it is short ones. DD and I have been working on sorting boys toys/clothes, and cleaning out closets and storage houses getting ready for a yard sale. Gotta finish that, too.

Resolutions for August:
1) actual... Fri, 2 Aug 2013 11:15:18 EST Old patterns and more - where can we donate them? My dad is cleaning out my mother's old sewing room. TONS of old sewing patterns as well as yards upon yards of fabric my mother never got around to use.

The fabric appears to be primarily polyester.

Any ideas on where he can donate this? It would be a shame to throw it out. Fri, 2 Aug 2013 10:55:00 EST hello from Michigan Hello I was told about this site from another one, they thought it would help me because I am so into quilting.
