SparkPeople Road Runners Team Messageboard This is for anyone currently running road races or wanting to as one of your goals. SparkPeople Road Runners Team Messageboard Running with a hurt foot I have been training for a half marathon that is on December 13th. I did my long run (9 miles) on friday before last, followed by a shorter run on last Monday (7 miles). I went out an ran on Thursday and about 3 miles in my right foot started hurting on the outside. It has done this before at the end of September when I decided it would be a fun challenge to run 100 miles in a month. I cut back the mileage after completion and gave myself a rest between thursday and sunday during a couple... Mon, 10 Nov 2014 14:37:26 EST What to wear??? It looks like my luck is running out. I've never had a race with bad weather. But, the forecast for next weekend is getting worse instead of better. Rain, Rain, and more rain-- with 60% chance of rain and getting higher. And it's a flat run, but a trail run, so it's going to be muddy. And in the high 30s-low 40s.

So what do I wear for this marathon? Sun, 9 Nov 2014 15:08:42 EST Hello! I am new but here to stay! Hello, I joined a few weeks ago, but have been holding myself back from interacting with anyone else on the site because I wanted to make sure that I was really ready to commit to this journey this time. Well, today is day 5 on track with my eating and day 3 of early morning workouts. I think I am finally ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle and stick to it!! I ultimately need to loose about 100 pounds. I also want to take up running and complete an Appalachian Trail thru-hike before I turn... Fri, 7 Nov 2014 07:25:34 EST New to running/ Team My name is Busara. I live in Kenya, the land of many many accomplished runners. Ironically I can not run to save my life. A few weeks ago I started venturing out and realized I love it outside. I love walking outside and just being with nature and not feeling stressed about anything. I have started running a few minutes at a time and I am hoping to be an accomplished runner some day. I would like to be able to say i run X miles a day. I am hoping that I will be able to do it. And if I lose t... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 05:11:03 EST New to Team Hi all - I enjoy running and I am currently in PT for some knee issues and hip/lower back issues as well. I ran a race earlier in October and had severe hip and back pain one mile in. Thankfully, it was only a 5k and I could walk/jog the rest of the race and finish. Needless to say, I haven't run since or really worked out beyond my PT.

I am hoping to add in swimming next week. I had to back out of two other races this fall because they don't think I'll be back in running form befo... Wed, 22 Oct 2014 14:20:20 EST Any advise for long distance team relay? I was recruited last week to join a 9 man team running the Bourbon Chase this coming weekend. I have run a half marathon last year and was running 10+ miles prepping for a 14k that was 2 weeks ago. So not overly worried about the distances. I am running 4 legs of the relay, between 4 and 7 miles, totally 20 miles. We start Friday at 3pm and expect to take about 26hrs as a team to complete the 200 miles.

Main concerns I have is getting enough rest in the group van and staying loos... Thu, 9 Oct 2014 10:02:41 EST Half Marathon Recovery? Sunday I ran my first half marathon. It was so much fun!

I took Monday off from exercise. Tuesday I did a slow 4 mile run to try to get rid of the DOMS. Today I did my Kettlebell class but went with lighter weights. But I'm still just exhausted and sleeping longer than usual hasn't cured that. I'm using my foam roller daily.

I'm wondering how long it will take to get back to normal energy levels and for my sore quads to recover.
Wed, 8 Oct 2014 19:58:29 EST to marathon or not Hi,

I wrote a more detailed message. But it keeps saying I am using h t ml . So I put it on my sp blog

Basically - I am training for a full marathon. Almost done with it and thinking that I am not in better shape than I was running a half. In fact I think I am slower and not as toned. full marathons seem to be more mental, diet.

If you are a marathoner, what benefits are there from going from 13.1 to 26.2. I am not seeing it... let me know your thoug... Wed, 1 Oct 2014 16:25:01 EST Running & Weight loss restart I just started back on my weight loss & running journey. I started running at the beginning of this year and was moving my time & mileage up until a job change at the end of May. Due to a co-worker's departing, I started working 50+ hour weeks, couldn't make it to my running club runs, missed a couple of 5k's I had registered for, etc. So, I just got really discouraged and gave up.
As of October 6th, I'm moving to a new position with more regular, predictable hours. So, I will be able t... Wed, 24 Sep 2014 18:23:14 EST aiming for a faster 5k Hi, my name is Adinda. I love running. You need no tools, it is just you who has to do it. And that is a great feeling. I used to do to much to soon but with the spark 5K schedule i really got on track. The only thing i miss is speed. I run the 5 K in about 55 minutes. I must say i gained quit some weight due to menopause, seriously. And i feel that when i am running.I very much want to do run some 5K runs but i do not want to be the one they are waiting for every time. Ran 2 and 3K runs, th... Mon, 22 Sep 2014 08:45:03 EST Gels during a marathon My first full marathon is in just under a month, and my 20-mile long run is coming up next weekend. I'm trying to figure out how many gels to plan on for those runs. For half-marathons, I've only ever taken one, around the 8-mile mark, and been fine on water/Nuun for the rest. I think I took a second during my 16-mile training run, but can't remember exactly when--maybe around 13 miles? That's been my longest run so far, because I had shin splints and had to skip my 18-miler. (I have approval... Mon, 15 Sep 2014 18:09:47 EST Running After Broken Ankle About 7 weeks ago I slipped and broke my tibia, the smaller of the two lower leg bones on the outside of my right leg, just above where it meets the knobby bone that sticks out at the ankle. I have been out of a cast for 3 weeks and in a walking boot. The doctor has given me clearance to walk as much as I want (I did 2 miles this morning), swim (I did 20 lengths the other day), and stretch the ankle any which way I can. I am not supposed to start weaning myself off the boot until 8 weeks, b... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 09:37:38 EST New to running Hi there, just join the team! Hubby and I just completed C25k last week! Wanted to get back to running/ jogging again (haven't ran since college. Thought the C25K would be a good start! Sat (8/16/14) will be our first 5k! Tue, 12 Aug 2014 22:28:24 EST Tripped & fell forward onto concrete:( I’m in my early to mid 30s and have run on and off, mostly on for close to 3 years.

Today, for the first time I tripped and fell. I was looking down a street instead of in front of me and wasn’t lined up with the ramp. My right foot hit the concrete curb and I went forward onto the actual concrete sidewalk. I was thankfully only 3.5 minutes into the run and was able to walk home.

I think I Almost flew forward because I only hit on the upper part of my body. I have an abr... Sun, 3 Aug 2014 14:34:43 EST August 2014 Miles Thought I'd start the August challenge.

Goal: ?????

08/02 5.2/10.4
08/01 5.2/5.2 Sat, 2 Aug 2014 20:07:11 EST treadmill training? I'm new to the treadmill. I was actually given one to help with my marathon training because with two babies at home, getting out to run on the road has only been happening on weekends and this way I can run during nap-time. I am super grateful, but I am finding it challenging to actually RUN on a treadmill. I'm able to do a fast walk, I'm walking nearly as fast as I run (because I am S.L.O.W.) but actually RUNNING is not working out so well for me.

Am I strange? Is this a com... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 10:01:40 EST Busted Ankle - Need Some Help! I thought I would post to this forum because if anyone would understand what it's like to suddenly be unable to run, it would be the folks in this group.

I am just shy of 2 weeks into nursing a broken ankle after a slip and fall at home. I broke my right ankle, which means I can't drive, so I am stuck in the house. I am unemployed and the wheel chair I have doesn't have the wheels to get me through the grass & dirt driveway (I live on a dirt road and there is a sidewalk about 1/2... Sat, 19 Jul 2014 10:45:44 EST Keepin the motivation up when race day is far away We are looking at a half, but the race is 7 months away. It will be my 6th. I did a half last year that was many months away. I thought it would help bc it would be a slow build on increasing mileage. Looking back, I feel like I kind of burned out a little bit and my finishing time reflected that as well.

So I came up with some ideas to maybe help me keep me going and of course I want the opinion of Spark because there are so many of us here at different abilities and experiences. ... Wed, 16 Jul 2014 23:19:28 EST Water stop: hose & trash can/bag-safe? Did a 5 mile race this morning and had fun. Was a little iffy by what I saw at the water stops. As it was sponsored by a newspaper, there were tons of photos online. Photos make it pretty clear how the water stops worked:

A garden hose came out to the street. A 55 gallon trash can was lined with a black trash bag. The can was filled with water from the hose, then a pitcher was dipped in the can and used to fill paper cups on the table.

Between the garden hose and the tra... Sun, 13 Jul 2014 20:32:20 EST Just arrived Hi Everyone! I'm Karla and I have just joined the team. I have been running regularly for about 10 months now. I just ran my first 10K this past weekend and I am training for my first half-marathon, September 27. I run about 100 miles a month. I look forward to meeting all of you.

Karla 524

Tue, 8 Jul 2014 17:32:20 EST July 2014 Hot Miles 7/1- 6.2 miles

July Total - 6.2 miles
2014 Total - 600.3 miles Wed, 2 Jul 2014 10:09:07 EST July 201 Hot Miles 7/1 - 6.2 miles Wed, 2 Jul 2014 10:08:20 EST I want to run faster I have ran off and on for the past 6 years. I usually just run as fast as I feel like running, but I think I want something more. I haven't ran consistently in several months so I am going 3 minute jog, 30 second walk intervals to start building some endurance.

I get that "fast" has different meanings for everyone. My PR's are at such:

2 mile- 9:06 per mile
10K- 9:54 per mile
Half- 10:13 per mile
Full- 10:55 per mile

I would like to start doing... Here we go!

Goal: ??

06/01 7.7/7.7 Sun, 1 Jun 2014 17:33:53 EST Rehab tour 2014 So, for those who know me. HEY THERE! :-)
For those who don't, nice to meet you. :-)
2013 and the first third of this year was a complete washout for me but it's coming back. I got WICKED sick last January (2013) with some sort of virus that ended up getting in to my lungs. They put me on antibiotics which caused even MORE problems and by the time I was feeling better, it was March. So.... I moved on to other things and completed P90X and did some other stuff after that on and off ... Wed, 28 May 2014 16:50:58 EST Running + Asthma + Allergies = UGH I'm a lifelong asthmatic currently training for a marathon. My asthma has been completely under control for years, requiring only a rescue inhaler a couple times a week, if that. Of course, I always have it with me when I run and would occasionally need it at the beginning of my run or after the big hills. Recently, however, I've been DYING, and using my inhaler over and over and not feeling any relief.

Like many parts of the country, we're also having giant pollen storms and I... Wed, 21 May 2014 12:33:25 EST How To Dress for Rainy Race? Help! Sunday I have a 10k race planned. It's supposed to be around 50 degrees and rainy. Spring showers could mean light rain or a real downpour. I'm hoping to finish in 1:03.

Normally for 50 degrees, I'd wear capris and a short sleeved shirt. But adding in my Brooks windbreaker/water resistant jacket, I feel like that would be too warm. It doesn't offer much protection - last time I got caught in a surprise downpour, I was soaked to the skin within 5 minutes.

I'm think... Fri, 16 May 2014 14:58:03 EST Hi from Wisco! Hello!
Just joined the group. Looking for some support with running and hoping reading about everyone else doing it will help motivate me to get out there! I need to get back in shape for a half in September! Sun, 11 May 2014 22:29:41 EST Why Hello There:) Hi!

I literally *just* started running again after a very very long ...ummm let's call it a goal is to eventually run a 5k race. I don't have a time line, I don't like to have that much pressure on myself, but when I feel ready I will find one in my area and go for it! Then of course I'll want to do a 10k and that's where I stop myself...for now:) Fri, 9 May 2014 22:16:56 EST eek! just registered for a full marathon!!! Ok. It's actually my second full and I think i'm mostly freaking out because it's 6 months away-- like it should be for me to train, but I'm full of butterflies!!

It's supposed to be "the easiest marathon in America" and has a 6 hr finish time. I completed a tough marathon last fall in 5:55:33, so I SHOULD be able to do this. eek! (Also, it's a gravel trail and I don't have easy access to a gravel trail to train on, but I do occasionally train on dirt paths so I'm hoping that wi... Tue, 6 May 2014 14:50:16 EST Hi from NoVa Hi everyone! I am Jenn and while I am new to the group....I am not new to SparkPeople. This is my 2nd time seriously committing to using Spark to change my lifestyle....this time it seems to be sticking much better :)

I have been a runner for about 5 years now and have run many different racing distances from 5K to half marathon (my favorite distance). My life schedule is a bit crazy but I am trying to make sure I keep running a priority as it is good for me and my mental health... New to the group and just wanted to say a quick hello. I am not new to running. I am currently training for my first full marathon. I have ran halves 10ks and 5ks. I love to run and find it to be a great stress reliever! Tue, 29 Apr 2014 15:29:07 EST Hi everyone! Hi all,
I'm new to this site and am a former (and future!) runner. Running has always been my biggest passion but due to some medical issues I gained a lot of weight and injured myself every time I tried to run. I'm a little discouraged at starting out from nothing so to speak, although I have kept my fitness up with strenuous biking. I ran a couple months ago and was so discouraged with my body that I haven't tried again. I think I was unrealistic though to expect that I could run even... Tue, 29 Apr 2014 12:21:18 EST Abdominal Pain? I ran my 5th HM yesterday. It was pretty torturous for me, because for the first time, I experienced all of the GI issues that I have long heard about... cramping, nausea, etc...

Today, I've got pain in my upper right abdomen. I've had it hurt before, post long run... even several hours post long run, but never well into the next day. The internet in this case is reassuring, rather than alarming, but I wanted to know if other's have experienced this and if so, if they found rel... Mon, 28 Apr 2014 15:09:54 EST Running Groups? Hi everyone,

I was wondering what your experience has been with running groups. Good, mixed, not great? It would be nice to meet other runners and have someone understand my excitement for it. At the same time, I generally average 10:30 to 12:00 per mile depending on how far I'm going and being the slowest of the group is a bit intimidating. So, yes, please share your experiences and if you're curious about joining a running group, I'd like to hear from you, too! Thu, 24 Apr 2014 09:34:50 EST cell phone holder? What do you use to hold your cell phone?

At a recent expo, I was seduced by a salesperson to buy an HB Tune (
) that straps the phone to your left hand. But it has a transparent (but thick) cover making it hard to use the touch screen on the phone.

I've been using a spibelt (
) but it's a bit of a hassle (while running) to unzip, remove, replace, rezip and to rezip in just the right way so that the volume butto... Sun, 13 Apr 2014 15:40:53 EST Hello Hi all. I've been running 2-4 miles for a couple of years on a regular basis, but this year started off with a 10K program to challenge myself and to break away from the treadmill and get out on some of the really nice trails that we have around my area. Did well, had some mile split PRs and am trying to incorporate more longer runs into my weekends. Recently did my first organized 5K, doing another one this month, and am contemplating a HM this fall. Looking to increase my distance and l... Tue, 8 Apr 2014 12:48:26 EST From 5K to 10K Anyone have a good training plan to get to the next level - from 5K to 10K? My running has been crap of late. I've not had time or gumption to make time. When I did get out, I was stuck at 10k. I couldn't bring myself to move my legs more than 10k.

But, I went out on Saturday in the pouring rain. I gave myself permission to run as long as I wanted. No rush to get home and take care of the kids or clean the carpets-- I didn't worry about my time, because I knew my time would be off because of the rain.

And I broke that *#(* curse! It looks like a great course (I did the Free Press HM in 2009), and I am looking forward to running on Belle Isle. Is anyone else doing it? Would love to meet up if possible.

For those that have not heard of it, it's in downtown Detroit, which is a really cool city venue despite Detroit's reputation. Mon, 31 Mar 2014 08:02:50 EST Half Marathon Training Hey guys!

So ... I stupidly signed up for a half marathon on June 8. I'm excited, but very, very nervous.

(Mainly because I did it not realizing that oh, June 8 is 10 weeks away.)

I can run 3 miles continuously (did a PR time at my 5K this last Sunday), and I know that's the starting point for training. Wed, 26 Mar 2014 08:34:20 EST Marathon Runner making a comeback Hello gang.

I've been running for 15 years, had a period where I gained a lot of weight and later found out it was due to my thyroid function and not plain ole depression like I thought. I'm making my comeback now and training for marathon #7: Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon on April 19.

Oh, and I'm getting remarried 3 weeks before the race, because apparently I thrive under pressure. The week of Thanksgiving, I was going out the door to go to CURVES and fell down the stairs...on my back....legs all fixed! No pain other than normal foot fatigue, I work on a concrete floor all day! Fri, 17 Jan 2014 08:44:17 EST Effective Strength Training I'm sure this topic has been covered in depth, however, I'll ask anyway ..

I'm currently mapping out my training schedule for another marathon and in my research, women my age (40 something) ought to increase our muscle mass and incorporate more speed training to assist us with our depleting VO2 Mass. So, it's time to hit the gym and work on my muscles. My problem ... I have no clue which machines will be the most effective for a runner! I confess, I am a cardio junkie because i... Thu, 16 Jan 2014 17:00:24 EST great app for running - Gipis Hey,

an invite to try out a great new app Gipis.

It sets up a plan for your running goals. The plan is based on you, your running experience.

Things I like about it:
1) it changes based on how you find the work outs. Making them harder or easier as needed.
2) it tells you if you are on pace, too slow or too fast
3) you can sync with your garmin, run keeper, and a little work Nike +
4) It does timed intervals.
5) It is free.
<... Thu, 16 Jan 2014 07:00:59 EST lsb1974 last year my husband of 17 years walked out on me and my girls. he blamed me for everything, when i know there is/was someone else. he has made this very hard especially with his hatfullness, rudeness, name calling and insults. in this time i have probably gained about 30 lbs and the divorce isn't final. i am beginning to come to terms witht he divorce especially with his attitude change and he has compeletly went bonkers. my goal or saying for 2014 is 40 @ 40. i will turn 40 this year ... Wed, 15 Jan 2014 12:03:15 EST Mizuno Wave inspire 9 I finally found a shoe I love that doesn't rub the back of my narrow heels! I had never tried Mizuno before and I love my Inspire 9 shoes, but now they have come out with a new model, Inspire 10, that looks completely different! Has anyone tried the 10's yet? Or can anyone recommend another model that might be similar? I have low arches and overpronate quite a bit. I rotate shoes and occasionally use fivefingers or similar shoes to strengthen my feet and work on my form, but need somethi... Summer and fall I had a problem with patellofemoral-femoral pain syndrome, but that's much better now. I am thinking about signing up for a half marathon in May 2014. I currently run 2-3 days a week and my long run day is 5.5 or 6 miles.

Is May too soon to run my first half? Will I be simply challenging myself or will I be risking injury? Wed, 8 Jan 2014 11:30:26 EST Hi Sparkers! New to the team! I haven't been on the site since oct 2010! whoa I know...but im back slightly slimmer and wanted to say hi to all my fellow sparkers!! Thu, 26 Dec 2013 07:10:23 EST Nike + Application Friends Hello,
I have been religiously using the Nike+ application on my iPhone. I have one friend who used to run quite a bit and we were friends as well on the Nike app. However, she has since stopped running and I miss being able to compete and compare times, etc. If anyone is uses the app to track running and would like to "friend" me, my user name is CELLOTHERE00 just as it is here.
363 Wed, 4 Dec 2013 09:18:57 EST December 2013 run into the New Year Ok, I decided to start the December 2013 miles challenge but give it a slightly different name. Here we go running into the final stretch of 2013 and into 2014!

Goal: 150 miles

12/01 6.1/6.1 Sun, 1 Dec 2013 13:44:23 EST New to team I recently found this Spark Team, thanks to its position on the points leaderboards for running. It looks like a better fit for me than Half Marathon (which is an aspiration rather than a reality right now) or the 5K Your Way team (since I routinely run further than 5K).

I became a runner in the autumn of 2011 after going through 5K Your Way training, and learned to run in cold weather as autumn transitioned to winter. I sat out most of the summer in 2012 and 2013 with injury, go... Fri, 29 Nov 2013 15:17:31 EST Colder while running after weight loss? Hey all, I had a foot injury and so took an off-season. I kept losing weight anyway, and when I start running again soon I will have lost just over 20 lbs.

In preparation for running outside, I'm wondering if anyone has felt colder running outside after losing weight? Did you have to wear more layers? Or was it not noticeable?

Thanks! Sat, 23 Nov 2013 16:06:21 EST Tried out my new tech gear... I'm the person in the room who is always cold when everyone else is warm, so when I decided to run outside this winter, I did my research and bought all the technical clothing I would need to keep warm.

Today, it is 20F with 25 mph winds, so I thought I'd try out some of my gear. I put on my Smartwool base layer, my insulating fleece layer, and my windproof polypropylene layer...and was miserably overheated. By the time I was finished running, I felt like I was slogging along in a... Sat, 23 Nov 2013 14:54:40 EST SNOW! We had a major winter storm move in yesterday that's expected to dump 21 inches altogether. I had every intention of running this morning, but I woke to find 8 inches of fresh, undisturbed snow on the ground this morning. I made a decision not to run because of safety, but I don't really know if there was a safety issue. I'm a new runner and haven't run in snow before. Do any of the more experience runners in the group have experience with deep snow running? Is there a snow depth or cond... Thu, 21 Nov 2013 13:35:10 EST How Do I Fix My Form? The salesperson at my local running store says I run with my feet pointed somewhat outward instead of straight ahead, that my arches collapse a little and that my knees roll inward. She had me try a pair of insoles with stiff arch support but I found them painful. She said they weren't right for me if they caused pain.

I've been doing exercises to strengthen my hips and fix an imbalance in my quads prescribed by my physical therapist for patellofemoral pain syndrome for months. I am looking for motivation and buddies to help keep me going through out the winter, and people to share and hear about others journeys. Sun, 17 Nov 2013 15:00:17 EST Help, my tank hit empty without warning Science of running question

I got home after a 22k run on Sunday and just wilted. It took 36hrs (two nights of sleep) to get off the couch. I just felt like I'd lost a liter of blood, all wilted and droopy. No energy, low brain function, spacey. But the funny thing was I had zero, nada, muscular pain or tendons or joints. I didn't have any of the normal signs of a hard run. The run itself was hard for the first 30minutes on the flat feeling tired and lead-like but as I starte... Mon, 11 Nov 2013 19:42:38 EST Altitude running vs. sea level I live in Utah and the regular routes I run are between 5100 and 8400 feet above sea level.

In December we are traveling to Hawaii and I'm curious as to what is realistic to expect, result-wise. We'll be at maybe 1000 feet and I'm planning to take advantage of that and see if I can shave some time off of my 5k and 10k times.

I've done a little research and a lot of what I am finding says it doesn't make a big difference. Does anyone have experience with this? Sat, 9 Nov 2013 12:58:25 EST What's your "Running Mantra"? What do you tell yourself while you are running to get through a rough mile? (or a rough run altogether). Here are a couple of new ones for me:

"It hurts because you're doing it, the pain would stop if you stopped, but then you wouldn't be doing it. "- thought of this while holding goal pace during a recent half marathon

"Exhaustion is not a reason to stop. The only reason to stop is injury." Wed, 6 Nov 2013 09:59:13 EST in training question food & calorie counts I'm currently in training for a marathon. I wanted to be down to 120 which according to here I should have already met that goal. I hit 121 then it jumped up to 124.2 and I have held that for 2 weeks. I fixed my tracker several times to allow more food but it still will not allow me above 1550 calories. Here is the thing I'm irritated about. Halloween landed on my rest day but I decided to do a little bit of something which burned a little over 400 calories. I took in over 2000 calorie... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 11:48:47 EST What to look for in a treadmill? I'm thinking about getting a treadmill. Sometimes the weather just isn't inviting for outdoor runs. My gym has a hard and fast 30 minute limit for treadmill usage during peak hours and I'm trying to stay 10k fit through the winter.

What do I look for in a treadmill? Any idea what price range is the minimum to get a sturdy, durable machine that won't be super noisy? Sun, 3 Nov 2013 00:34:53 EST Rain Gear for Running I just started running in April so have no experience running through a fall and winter. It rains here pretty much every day from October to the end of April. When I say it rains, it really pours down. Temps are usually from just above freezing to the low to mid 50s Farenheit. It's gray, gloomy and fairly dark.

What gear do I need from head to toe to stay warm (but not too warm) and dry?
Related question, any tips for a waterproof way to carry my iPhone for safety?

Sun, 3 Nov 2013 00:29:46 EST November 2013 miles challenge Anyone up for a mileage challenge?
I'll aim for 150. Fri, 1 Nov 2013 12:52:04 EST Running outdoors in winter I've been running for over three years now and have a few 5Ks under my belt, so now I'm thinking about doing a 10K and half-marathon next year. In the past during the winter, I would run on the treadmill. This year, however, I have decided that I'd like to keep running outdoors as much as I can. There are several reasons for this:

1. My treadmill is old, and the display has gone out, so I don't use it anymore because I don't know how fast or or how far I'm running. Unfortunate... Fri, 25 Oct 2013 09:21:24 EST I've lost my mind Hi everyone, I think I've lost my mind.

This is normally the time I get bit by the racing bug so I start signing up for races like crazy, but this time around I'm going big. Tue, 15 Oct 2013 22:41:21 EST Final training week before first half marathon I am about a year and a half into running. Have been doing 5k, 10k and did a 14k a month ago. So far so good. No injuries and keeping just under a 10min/mile pace on average in the longer runs. After doing 14k I decided to just push a head for the half marathon since I was already in the training pattern for it. So I signed up for the Cincinnati Half Marathon. I started off excited when I signed up a month ago, now feeling a bit burned out...and just looking for completion. :D

... Fri, 11 Oct 2013 08:16:41 EST Minor catastrophe! Fri, 27 Sep 2013 22:10:08 EST Over-training recovery So, my training for my marathon this summer got all messed up. I knew it was going to be massively tricky and it was. I finally got a clean bill of health to train fully again, and went from my doctor prescribed 2 miles-only runs, back to full 10-15 milers over night, stupid of me, I know. Well, last week, while still 4 miles from home, my legs just quit. They were like, "what the hell lady! We're not gonna take this!" Bear with me; this might be a bit of a wordy question. :)

I'm training for my first half-marathon, and based on my most recent 5k pace (8:44/mile), the McMillan calculator says I should expect my time for my half to be 2:07:56 (which is a 9:46 mile). My long runs (just did 12.6 miles this morning) are averaging around 10:30/mile or so. I'm trying not to make that a hard effort, which I generally judge by my breathing. I do the first mile with 5 breaths to each step, second mile wit... Sun, 15 Sep 2013 23:24:16 EST Chaffing? Sorry for so many questions of late! I'm now 27 days to my first full marathon and am now experiencing my longest runs ever! I have also apparently crossed some sort of "chaffing threshold". I've never crossed this line before, but my clothes are chaffing now. My sports bra which has served me well and wonderfully up to this point, left sores on my back yesterday. My underarms chaffed as well. I know body glide should help on the underarm chaffing, but what to do about where my clothes a... Mon, 9 Sep 2013 10:17:53 EST How do you mentally recover from a terrible race? I've had bad races before, but today's 5K took the cake. 3 walk breaks and I finished a good 3 minutes slower than my goal time. Wed, 4 Sep 2013 11:51:28 EST spring vs. fall races Hello!

I guess this depends on a lot of different personal factors, but I'm wondering if you think you perform better in spring or fall races? Hi All,

I've been experimenting with more electrolyte replacement. I've noticed that when I would first come back to running after having to take a few days off for illness, my sweat is very salty. The effect goes away after the next few days, however I'd have increasing fatigue with my runs. I attributed it to dieting and perhaps depleting myself of carbs, but now I'm not too sure. I also noticed I felt dehydrated and tired a lot though I was drinking a lot of water.

I... Fri, 30 Aug 2013 12:26:18 EST How do I improve my cardiovascular endurance? I started adding jogging intervals to my walks in May. I worked my way up to running half a mile, walking half a mile. Then at the start of July, my doctor took me off the beta blocker I was on for migraine prevention. (It wasn't really helping much and I was getting dizzy and came close to passing out). Since then, my heart rate understandably is higher at rest and while exerting - by about 20 bpm. So now running feels much harder! My heart rate goes up to around 160 and stays there unless ... Thu, 29 Aug 2013 17:55:19 EST Another newbie Hi everyone! I'm new to Spark and semi-new to running (used to run is HS and started up again about 6 months ago). I'm training for a half-marathon in October -- really excited to be joining this community of like-minded folks! Wed, 28 Aug 2013 17:17:57 EST Getting started Hi all,
I used to run quite a bit (5-6 days a week) but got out of the habit, and now I want back in! I remember lots of early AM jogs when the sun was coming up, and that excellent feeling that no matter WHAT else happened that day, I had accomplished something good.

Good luck to everyone with the weight loss goals! Mon, 26 Aug 2013 16:11:16 EST Newbie here! Hello, all! I just recently decided to take up running. I found it to be an excellent way to reduce stress, and challenge myself as well :-).

I'm using the Zombies, Run! 5K program, and absolutely loving it. Trying to find ways to fit it into my weekdays, since I'm at work quite a bit, and I have a loooonnng commute back and forth. For now, I'm running on the weekends. I need all the motivation I can get :-). Your support and tips are very much appreciated :-D. Sun, 25 Aug 2013 18:32:18 EST "Maintenance" training? The thing about running that I don't understand yet is this: Maintenance. If you're not training for a certain race goal, how are you supposed to train to maintain your speed, endurance, or other accomplishments already achieved?

All of the training plans I've seen online seem to lead up to a goal of one particular race length. What if you just want to increase your distance, but also have no particular "end goal" or end time for that goal? My ultimate goal is to someday run a ful... Tue, 20 Aug 2013 11:00:01 EST Which course would you pick for a faster 5K?
Course A: Has more 90 degree turns on the course (10! mostly due to a loop run twice on an out and back course), but is flat, temp 66 degrees.

Course B: Has fewer 90 degree turns (3), but is slightly hillier, temp 57 degrees. Fri, 16 Aug 2013 14:51:22 EST 5K -- now what? I started running with the Couch to 5K app, and now that I've completed that and done my first 5K, I'm not sure where to go next with my training. (I intend to run a bunch more 5Ks this summer and fall, and I'm walking our city's Half Marathon in October.)

Should I just continue trying to run 3.1 miles three times a week and try to work on my speed? Or should I try to add some distance? I'd like to start a 10K running training program, but I didn't want to do too much too quickly a... Mon, 12 Aug 2013 10:04:10 EST New HRM, New Calorie Burn? I just used my new Suunto Ambit2 w HRM (GPS). I was using a Polar (non GPS) HRM for the last year. My calorie burn has always been pretty high compared to my partner but I wrote it off to my exertion being much higher than my partner. His HR is always lower than mine when we run together. So this weekend using my Suunto my normal regular 60min run at 151 average came in at 600calories. This would have normally been closer to 800 on my Polar. I even contacted Polar about why it was so h... Mon, 12 Aug 2013 00:48:35 EST A New Passion I always run but I just do it for sake of a routine or sometimes to just get a cardio logged in. But along the line, I realized it is becoming a passion for me and I feel like igniting the fire. I just got a Fitbit which I believe will help me with tracking my miles.

I hope joining this team will be an encouragement to do better.

Temi, Sun, 11 Aug 2013 13:12:06 EST Effects of running? Okay..quick question...I ran a half marathon back in May. I wasn't properly hydrated, I came down with the stomach flu the week before the race. So I blamed the intense headache and nausea (which eventually led to me throwing up the little water I was able to keep down after the race)...I took like an hour nap and then was fine and could eat and everything.

I'm in training for another half marathon. I completed 8 miles for my long run last week and was fine. I did nine miles to... Thu, 8 Aug 2013 07:22:41 EST Training plan I took the plunge and signed up for a 10 mile race the end of October. My longest run is 8 miles just because I got a little lost on a 6.5 mile run. I have completed a few triathlons this summer with an Olympic distance coming up in a week and a half. Any suggestions or training tips from getting from 6 ish miles to 10? Plus this course has a gradual downhill grade, any tips for tackling that?

thanks in advance! Wed, 7 Aug 2013 10:49:48 EST new to running Hi all! I'm new to the world of running but love learning about it and making progress! I'm at 20 minute miles with spirts of 15 minute pace. My goal is to increase my mileage and decrease my time. I hope to be down to 10 minute miles by this time next year! Mon, 5 Aug 2013 14:23:01 EST Garmin 610? I know the price tag is relative to an individual's finances, but I think most would agree that a $400 sports watch is expensive.

Anyone have experience with this model? Is it that much better than the 210?

I don't have a Garmin and am struggling with the decision of which one to get. I am at the point in my running journey and my racing goals that I need something more precise than my iphone app. Mon, 5 Aug 2013 09:25:32 EST Addicted to Running Hi!
In December, I got some medical news that got me off the couch and walking. I remember telling a friend that I had to quit jogging 17 years ago when I developed a back problem so would "never be a runner". In April, I walked my first 5k race on a very hilly course. In May, I started adding running intervals to my walks. Now I can run 3/4 mile before I have to take a walk break. I'm training for a 10k in September so last weekend I ran 5 miles and loved every minute of it.

... I am not new to spark people, but am fairly new to running. I was part of the spark people 5k team last year, did a 5k, then stopped running. I have been running again for about two months now and am loving it. From the looks of things I am way behind most folks posting with this team. My longest, no walk, run is 4 miles and my average pace is 12 min per mile, but I figure with all of the experience here I can surely learn something and get advice from time to time. Tue, 30 Jul 2013 12:59:18 EST ST while race training? I'm currently training for my first full marathon, and completed my third half marathon this past weekend. My training is going really well, but I've been neglecting ST during my training. I know its important to keep my muscles strong, but I just dont really know what to do. My training plan calls for 2 days of cross-training and I can fit ST in those days (not directly before a long run), but I am unsure what is the best way to approach it. Should I be going to the gym and lifting heavy... Tue, 30 Jul 2013 12:23:45 EST Am I a cheater OK, I don't think I cheated, but maybe kinda I do. This morning half way through my training run, my phone died for no reason. My training app is on my phone. So, when I got it started again, I tried to restart the app, but it wanted me to start from the way that was happening, I was already tired from running and only getting 6 hours sleep.

So, anyway, tonight when I got done with work, I did my training. I accidentally found out today that I can end the training e... Mon, 15 Jul 2013 22:13:11 EST Need some advice/help I'm training for my third half marathon in early September. My knee is acting up. I get sharp pains just behind the knee cap. Sharp, and gone as fast as they come on. They are not continuous. When I'm running, it's fine. When I'm walking, it's fine. When I start to run, sometimes the first step on that foot hurts my knee, then it's all good. Or when I am looking for traffic/turning my head and shoulders.

I am treating it with RICE. Then out of no where, it comes back. I... Mon, 15 Jul 2013 20:03:15 EST Came across this today... I've been running for only the last 3 1/2 years, one of which I had to sit out due to pregnancy and c/s recovery. And, I'm only up to HM, while training for my first full this fall. But, I thought this was wonderful. And terrible.

Mon, 15 Jul 2013 17:15:43 EST Any advice for a first time mud run? What to wear? What not to wear? And any other advice would be greatly appreciated. My sister and I are very new to 5ks and we've registered for the Dirty Girl in Milwaukee in August. Thanks! Sat, 13 Jul 2013 08:23:08 EST So... Marathon training... I'm hoping, hoping to just go to "complete" a marathon in late October. I'm an experienced HM, but 14 miles is my longest ever run. The marathon I'm hoping to complete has an 8 hour "finisher" limit and I'm thinking I can complete, even by just walking in under 7.

But, here's the thing... I really only ever have an hour or so a day to work out. Every other weekend or so, I get a long run in, at 2-3 hours. And I'm having surgery in late August that will put me down for a week,... Fri, 12 Jul 2013 17:45:00 EST Heel spur? Anyone been sidelined with this kind of injury? Did you have shots or surgery?? I just wanted to say I am running my first run tonight. It is only a 2 mile run, but it is awesome. And, in my practices I am only up to 2.5 miles anyway, so I don't think I could do more than that.

Anyway, it is the Just Us run for Justice. All the proceeds go to the International Justice Mission to help end world trafficking and slavery. Wed, 10 Jul 2013 07:52:25 EST Training for HM I'm running my first half in October, and am looking for some input on my training plan. I've looked at a bunch of different ones and have kind of just been winging it with sort of a combination of a few of them.

My problem (if it is a problem) is that my long runs are already up to 7.5 miles, and none of the plans have me getting up to that distance before late August at the earliest. Sun, 7 Jul 2013 22:10:55 EST Training question I have a technical question I'm hoping you all can help with! I'm training for a 10K in September (and a half in November!) and I'm following a training plan.

My 50:00 pace run says I need to do 20:00 at an easy pace, then repeat 2:00/half marathon pace & 1:00/easy pace 5 times. Then 15:00 minutes of easy pace to finish.

My question is this: Wouldn't my half marathon pace be slower than a 10K pace? I think the middle section is supposed to be harder than the easy 20 at... Fri, 5 Jul 2013 23:53:58 EST Watch and Music Device Choices? My Motoactv died which I've been using since I began running two years ago, and it holds both my music and is my running watch.

I have a Bluetooth headset and would really like to stay wireless. Tue, 2 Jul 2013 00:03:09 EST time of day you run 90% of the time, I am up with the sun and run before most people's alarm clocks sound. I love running in the morning, I love listening to the birds wake up and I love that it isn't stifling. Mon, 1 Jul 2013 21:48:04 EST Galloway run walk timer Hi Road Runners!!
I'm starting marathon training next Monday using the Galloway method for my long runs. I'm looking for a good interval timer app for my phone. I had one I used in the past but it got really "buggy" and very annoying to use, kept restarting and stopping...the problem is that there are too many apps to choose from and I don't want to waste any more money on crappy apps that don't work! Which ones worked for you?
Mon, 1 Jul 2013 11:56:52 EST Finally...but it took over a YEAR! I am not a natural runner. I have been training on my treadmill for over a YEAR to run a 5K. I started running to lose weight, but now I'm really loving it! I am doing the Couch to 5K program... but it's actually a longer version. I'm on week 6 of 12 and I'm running 4 days a week and I really look forward to my nightly run. I'm a stay at home mom, so it's nice to be able to put my daughter to bed and go for a run (when my husband is home of course :) ). That way he gets some alone time and I get some alone time. There's a race in August I'd like to register for and the choices are 5k and 15k. I wish there was a 10k, because I know I can do that, I just need to work on my pace. I am running the 5km Color Me Rad race next month and am hoping to not only have fun, but also pushing myself to run the best I can! Fri, 17 May 2013 07:56:23 EST Hello out there! Hello to all! I am a 39 year old "almost graduate" of the C25K program. I am on week 8 and loving it! I started the C25K program b/c back in February my 10yr old came to me with a "Girls on the Run" sign-up form and begged me to do it. I figured I would walk or run the silly thing with her and then forget all about it and go on with my (sedentary) life.

Well I HATED that damn program at first! Hello, all out there:

I'll be in Salt Lake city, near convention center, for a business trip. My marathon race is coming up soon so I need to continue to train. I just learned that the hotel my boss had us stayed in just closed their fitness room recently. Does anyone know if there's a good running route near convention center/downtown in Salt Lake city? Is it safe to run on the streets in that area early in the morning? Any areas to avoid?

Thanks for any tips! Sun, 14 Apr 2013 06:47:38 EST Run a 10K with no running only spinning? I am running a 10K in 2 weeks. I did a couple 5 Ks last fall, have been running consistently and am almost done a 8 wk training program culminating in a 12 K training run. I did the 5Ks in 30 min, and my my long training runs have averaged at 12 or 11.5 min miles. I am 44, 5'6" and about 20 lbs overweight...but working on it! friend from work entered the race too. But I just found out that he has done zero running in prep!!! He is 30, in good shape, goes to the gym a couple time... Wed, 10 Apr 2013 21:33:44 EST Hydration belts? I've decided that I might need to start carrying some water with me on my runs. Do people like belts or backpacks? What belts or packs? And why on earth are they so darn expensive? Since I'm a seriously budget runner, any life hacks to make something that works? (Right now,I keep water in my car and just run a path that runs me past it a couple of times so I can grab some sips... Or I run on a path that has a couple of water fountains.) Tue, 9 Apr 2013 16:35:43 EST What apps do you use? Wrote about Map My Run today in my blog - I find it to meet my needs for the most part, but just wondering what everyone else is using to log training runs when outdoors instead of on a treadmill? Sat, 6 Apr 2013 08:14:52 EST Committing to P90X I'm already in good shape, but I'm not getting the sculpting (the 6 pack) that I'm looking for. I've had P90X for a long time but I've always been too busy running and couldn't commit to the program. This year, my running enthusiasm has seriously dropped and my mileage has dropped like a two ton anchor and the workouts I'm doing aren't getting me the results I'm looking for - so, of we go - P90X, trail biking, kayaking, mountain hiking beginning at the end of this month. I should be the sexie... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 08:07:05 EST I'm going for the dream! Hello Everyone! My name is Tanya, I'm a married, home schooling mom of 5 beautiful children. It's been my dream to become a "runner" since I was 17 years old! Unfortunately, I'm now 42, and I'm FINALLY, making my dream come true! I completed the C25K Program about a month ago, and am now training for my first 5k, on April 13th! I have an amazing friend who is helping to train me, and is running the race with me. She runs 14 miles, and is training for a marathon, so my 5k is cake walk for her.... Fri, 5 Apr 2013 16:23:49 EST Running = Peanut Butter craving? GRRR - I was over calories again last night. I'm looking for suggestions.

I stay good, on target of the low end of calorie. I run after dinner (the only time I really can). About 2 hours later I am CRAVING peanut butter, I mean to the point I cannot think of anything else. Two slices of toast with peanut butter and I'm over by about 200 calories.

I've tried ignoring the craving, and I can't sleep.

Now, if I don't run, I'm fine. No cravings. I stay in cal... Fri, 5 Apr 2013 10:23:37 EST Nike Plus Friends Hey, I joined hoping to find new running pals of the virtual kind. I have one friend on NIke+. Let me start out by saying that I'm so glad I found this SparkTeam because I absolutely love to run. Now, when I say I love to run doesn't mean I'm good at it but hey I'm working at it. I'm preparing for my first 5k in June, the Color Run. I've heard that the Color Run is more about having fun than time which made me think it's the perfect 5k to start with. I'm hoping to run more 5k events in the future and eventually I want to slowly work my way up to a marathon.
I'm looking forwa... Tue, 2 Apr 2013 22:22:37 EST Shoe Frustration I have been running for several years. I have a real pet peeve that I think a lot of runners have, and I am wondering how you handle it.

Whenever I find a pair of shoes that I LOVE, the manufacturer always makes "improvements" to it so that totally change the shoe to the point that I can no longer run in them. It happened with Asics Kayanos, and now with the Mizuno Wave Riders. I started with version 13 of the Wave Riders, and I got to version 15, and I am now suffering foot and... Mon, 1 Apr 2013 21:50:53 EST Is it bad that running is a secondary exercise? I went from mostly JUST running (200 miles per month many times) to a combination of running, stairmaster, biking, kayaking and strength training - which, as you can imagine is a fairly good and broad way to exercise. So is it BAD that running has become a secondary or even third exercise option in my life? Mon, 1 Apr 2013 16:20:57 EST April - Come Run with Us Spring has sprung! For the last couple of days I've had a pain on the inside of my lower left leg a few inches above my ankle bone. It doesn't always hurt, but when it does the pain is very sharp and makes it hard to impossible to walk without support. Looking up the anatomy and symptoms it seems like the thing that best fits is a stress fracture.

I've only been running a little over a month and I haven't been overdoing it -- if anything triggered this it was all of five minutes of running on my tr... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 12:40:26 EST Cycling/Spin for cross training = knee pain? I am currently running 3 days a week, with strength/yoga/core as cross training. My goal is to add cycling to the mix, but have found that it mildly aggravates my IT band (which has been a big problem for me in the past, 3 months of PT and regular ongoing strength/core/yoga!). I've made sure my bike fits properly, seat is in correct position, etc. Has anyone been able to overcome this? MY PT loves the idea of cycling two days, but my knee seems to be a little less excited about it. I hate to ... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 11:06:55 EST New to running, question about foot pain Hi All,
I've decided to start running and signed up for a 5K at end of next month. My only goal is to finish. I planned to start training this week by running outside at the local high school trac, however, I have not done so because since last week I've had a nagging pain in ankle/arch. At first, I could barely walk after a long period of sitting or when I first awake in the morning. I know it's not plantar facitis, which I do have, because the discomfort is concentratated in the arch a... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 10:46:37 EST Hello!! Hi everyone! :)
I'm not new to Sparkpeople, but I'm fairly new to running. I started running in January, and have slowly been running farther and faster, and even signed up for my fist 5K in August. I'm super excited to join this team!! 334 Wed, 27 Mar 2013 16:31:25 EST Sick! Ick! I have 32 days until I have my first of back to back HM. And, I am SICK. I mean, sick. And I've been sick for a long time. I keep saying, "I've been kindergarten-ed!" since I seem to be catching every illness known to man and I think my kindergartner is the one bringing it all home. I haven't been for a long run in 3 weeks. I've done short, 1-3 milers, but nothing strenuous at all. I am currently battling a double ear infection, pink eye, a sinus infection and good old fashioned laryngiti... Wed, 27 Mar 2013 13:54:32 EST Dust Bowl Series Done! So I decided I'm going to start running again after a couple years off. The thing I worry about is that I have arthritis in my knees. I work out for an hour a day, six days a week on my nordic track which is really great for my poor old lady knees. But I want to get out of the house! I was wondering if anybody else has had experiences with this.

344 Wed, 20 Mar 2013 22:26:59 EST Question about new running shoes So I just bought a new pair of running shoes and the first time I ran in them one of my feet hurt by the time I was done. The second time I ran in them my foot hurt at first but then felt better after running for a while. It still wasn't perfect but was definitely better than the first time I wore them. I haven't been out again in them yet (probably will go out tomorrow) but I am thinking that they will continue to get more comfortable based on what I have seen so far.
Is this normal ... Wed, 20 Mar 2013 12:24:43 EST It's time! Hello everyone! I have been a member of SparkPeople for a while, but I was mainly a lurker who read other people's blogs and tried to avoid actually being accountable for anything. I have finally changed my mind set and am looking forward to putting much more effort in to fitness and nutrition and reaching my goals. I'm hoping to add some new friends and find motivation any and everywhere! Tue, 19 Mar 2013 09:34:47 EST 5ks as HM training? Hello!
I'm training for my first half marathon, and actually ran my first race, a 7k, this past weekend. I now seem to have some strange desire to run every race I can find. But they're expensive! 8k or more, and I'm in for sure, but I'm wondering if it's really worth the money to run a bunch of 5ks as well. I know I'd have fun, but do you guys think shorter races will also help with my training? I'm still really new to this. Are there other benefits I haven't considered?
Thanks, an... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11:57:35 EST Another foot pain question Another foot pain question!! Here's my situation:

Lately I've been feeling some pain in my right foot as I hit the 2/3 - 3/4 mark of my runs. It typically lasts about 5 minutes and is never so bad that I feel the need to stop. After 5 minutes or so, it goes away. I don't get it every run either. No pain any other time than during the run - walking around in my everyday shoes feels fine. I do however feel it when I'm doing lunges during my strength sessions - seems like the bending ... Karen Tue, 12 Mar 2013 17:44:31 EST Building a Better Me Hi, all you wonderful Sparkpeeps! My name is Anna and although I am on a new "journey", I'm not entirely new to Sparkpeople. I have learned that each time I stray from this wonderful site, I stop holding myself accountable and the weight come back on. I also did a 4 mile walk this am. Problem is, I'm doing it in new shoes with new inserts. See, I went last week to get shoes and had my feet evaluated. Turns out the arch of my left foot collapses when I walk/run. Makes sense as this foot was shattered when I was 13. LONG story short, we found shoes and inserts that support my left foot and cushion my right. No more shin splints!!!!

But she told me to "take it slow... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 12:35:50 EST First 5K of the season I have my first 5K of the season tomorrow. I'm a bit nervous as I haven't done much running in the last month. Too cold and wet. I intend to give it my all. I know this sounds weak but if I can finish in under 40 minutes (about a 13 minute mile) I'll be thrilled. Fri, 8 Mar 2013 12:38:57 EST Adjusting to Daylight Savings Time Hi Road Runners - for those of us living in North America, this weekend is the one where we lose an hour. My husband and I are running are first relay together - the American Odyssey Relay from Gettysburg to DC. Anybody have any experience with that relay or relays in general? Who else is running it this year? We are very excited to be doing this with a team of 12 good friends.

While I have been running for quite some time, it's new to my husband and I *think* he's enjoying it. The goal is to whet his appetite to sign up for the Disney Wine and Dine half marathon in November... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 08:39:05 EST New Here Hello I'm a mom of three and fairly new to running. I have recently lost about eighteen pounds from working out and am almost through with week 6 of a c25k program. Right now I can run about 2.5 miles and can run for about twenty minutes. I've got endurance, but I'm slow that is what I need to work on. I would like to try my first 5k in June, I think I can do it by then. Thu, 28 Feb 2013 12:28:50 EST Pace bunny I have my first pace bunny assignment on Sunday. I am pacing 2:15 at the local half marathon. I can run 2:14 in hilly, horrible winter conditions with 1 leg tied behind my back (almost), so I'm not worried that I won't hit my goal. I have a very clear race plan in my head.

Has anyone ever done pacing before? How much under the prescribed pace is too much? Want to increase from a half to a full, but I am worried about being a heavier runner, so I want to lose about 20 lbs before I increase distance. Run 3X per week, a couple of 10Ks and a 15K. Next race is the 12K Spartan (obstacle course). Would like to do a fall marathon - see how the weight loss goes. Thanks! Mon, 25 Feb 2013 12:35:40 EST First Marathon Selection - Need Help I want to run my first marathon this year. It's very ambitious but I found a training schedule aimed at newbies with the intention of having them complete the marathon not set record times or anything.

It comes down to 3 top contenders for me and I'd really appreciate some advice or opinions on which would be the best fit for a newbie like me.

"Run For The Hills" in Treherne Manitoba. I have been out of running for a couple months due to some knee problems that were a result of running too much without any strength trainings and yesterday was my first time back to running. It felt awesome and I was able to run a full 5k with no knee pain during or after my run! This was some of the best news I have had in a long time because before I had to stop running I signed up for a 5k race on March 9 and I thought that I was going to have to at least walk part of it if not all of i... Thu, 21 Feb 2013 10:44:31 EST First race in 10 days, not feeling very confident. I am running a 5k in 10 days, Sunday the 3rd. My very first race ever. I'm... not feeling too confident about things. I can walk 5k no problem, I'm just not very fast yet. I haven't finished my couch to 5k program yet, so I can't jog continuously for any great length of time yet. Right now I walk at a 15 min/mi pace and jog at a 13:30 min/mi pace. I usually jog for 2-3 minutes, then walk for 4-5 minutes. This is all on a treadmill, so I keep telling myself it doesn't count and I'll be too sl... Wed, 20 Feb 2013 16:41:38 EST Registered for the Chicago Marathon 2013 - I think was a crazy day trying to register. I took the day off of work so I'd be ready to go at 12:00 pm. I had everything filled out, and hit submit right at noon - only to get a "server error" message. I'm running to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities, so we had a different link to use. After 2 1/2 hours, I gave up so I could volunteer at an after-school thing at my sons' school. I came back, clicked on the "see if I'm registered" link, and lo and behold I saw my name!
... Tue, 19 Feb 2013 22:43:21 EST Clean hospital gift basket Hi everyone! A friend of mine's baby is in the hospital for a number of days and I want to give her a gift basket to give her some love. She is a fit mom who loves to fact she takes time out of caring for her little one to jog a few miles every day at the hospital. She is trying to make healthy choices with food but I'm sure that we all know that it's pretty lacking. Please help me put together a gift basket that fitness/Clean based that won't cost me more than $40. Thanks! :) Mon, 18 Feb 2013 11:15:44 EST First Long Distance Race Report Hi Everyone,

This weekend I completed a 10 mile race in Blacksburg, VA. The race was fairly well run, it was chipped time and they had 5 water stations along the course with volunteers that cheered us on.

I did pretty well (for myself at least) I finished the 10 miles in 1 hour 49 minutes. and I increased my pace from 12 minutes a mile at the start of the race to under 10 minutes a mile on the last mile of the race. (I have a nike sportband that shows my pace, and it ... Mon, 18 Feb 2013 08:28:28 EST After some soul searching about the future.... I've been doing alot of soul searching about how I want to proceed with my running. I've come to the conclusion (for now at least) that 3 - 4 days a week of around 20 or so miles is more than sufficient for decent cardio. What I want and need to do is work in an upper body strength training program. With that in mind, I'll be adding 3 days a week of a 12 week beginner strength training program. The one I'll be following is below.
I'm not necessarily looking to build muscle on like a mass... Sun, 17 Feb 2013 10:57:42 EST Pushup challenge 2013 - 3x a week. Set a goal I should have set this challenge up earlier (like the beginning of the year) but better late than never!
So here's the challenge...

Do pushups AT Least 3x per week and set your own goal for the year. personally, I would like to do at least 300 per week (3 days per week - 3 sets each time, average of 33 per set). Not sure what that comes out to at the end of the year but i'll go with about 45 weeks at 300 per week = um, 13,000. That actually seems like alot and i want to do ot... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 19:32:19 EST Hello~ Hi everyone! I just started walk/jogging about a month ago, and I'm "running" my first 5k in two weeks! I don't think I can jog the full length of this particular race, but I know I can walk 3.1 miles at the required 15 min/mi pace, and I will be able to (slowly) jog parts of the rest of it.

My phone was stolen recently, so I haven't been following a set couch to 5k program, but after this race I will start one so that hopefully I'll be able to jog the entirety of my second race wh... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 19:24:33 EST Run On It or Not Run On It Hi gang - it's been awhile since I've been around. I was sidelined for a few months in the fall, but am finally getting my speed and endurance back. That is, until I kind of screwed up my knee doing bridge work. It wasn't my first time doing bridgework since coming back, and I had been running the same bridge for a few weeks about twice a week. It's not even a big bridge. So I'm not sure what happened or what I did.

Anyway, after one evening of doing bridge repeats, the next da... Tue, 12 Feb 2013 21:16:45 EST Strange "cramp" I'm not certain what to call this other than a cramp that I've been getting the day after I run. Back of my thigh, just above my knee? It doesn't "hurt" just very uncomfortable and doesn't move well for a while. I can work it out with a good deal of slow walking (thus calling it a cramp).

I'm guess I'm not stretching something. Any suggestions? Tue, 12 Feb 2013 10:49:52 EST foot pain Recently, after a run I started getting pain in the bottom of my feet. In early 2011 I decided to run my first race which was a half...I was out of shape but made it!!! Sadly that was really the last time I ran. I had the mentality that I did what I set out for...not the mindset that I was a runner. This time I want to be a runner! If you don't know the reference, it is from a series of books called The Dark Tower series and the main character is Roland of Gilead. In Roland's world, the reference has many meanings and applies to many facets of life. In this case, it means that I remembered WHY I run in the first place. Tue, 29 Jan 2013 11:22:59 EST Less injuries with MORE running??? I need to check with the group to see if anyone else has experienced this. For the last 2-3 years I have been using the FIRST (Furman Institute) 3 day a week running program. I originally switched to this program because of some lower back issues I was having. I am now working with a coach and he has added a 4th day of running and if I tolerate that well we will add a 5th day. So here is the strange thing...the more mileage he is adding the better my body feels! My back has less pain, my hips... Mon, 21 Jan 2013 21:38:30 EST What annoys you while you're running? #1 annoyance for me is people who don't leash or control their untrained dogs. Doggie running up to edge of yard barking is ok. Doggie running out onto street barking is so not cool. And woman standing in middle of yard ineffectively calling "Oh Jojo come here" as doggie continues down the street barking threateningly is just plain pathetic. I need to get some pepper spray.

#2 annoyance: Woman who pulls up beside you in car to ask directions. As she holds her smart phone that shou... I did my first 5k in November 2011 and my second in January 2012, but what has really hooked me was finishing my first HM this past weekend. That was only the beginning.
On that day I went to the urgent care and the doctor prescribed me an antibiotic and prednizone. I've been an off and on runner since I graduated high school (in high school I was a sprinter and a hurdler for the varsity team--I certainly do miss hurdling!). So, I have an "easy" week next week - meaning no hard training obviously, and I had originally planned on 32 miles but my mileage has been slightly higher than I had originally planned on because I feel good and I believe the extra mileage will benefit me in the long run for the race.
