I was actually given one to help with my marathon training because with two babies at home, getting out to run on the road has only been happening on weekends and this way I can run during nap-time. I am super grateful, but I am finding it challenging to actually RUN on a treadmill. I'm able to do a fast walk, I'm walking nearly as fast as I run (because I am S.L.O.W.) but actually RUNNING is not working out so well for me.

Am I strange? Is this a com... I broke my right ankle, which means I can't drive, so I am stuck in the house. It will be my 6th. I did a half last year that was many months away. I thought it would help bc it would be a slow build on increasing mileage. Looking back, I feel like I kind of burned out a little bit and my finishing time reflected that as well.

So I came up with some ideas to maybe help me keep me going and of course I want the opinion of Spark because there are so many of us here at different abilities and experiences. ... Was a little iffy by what I saw at the water stops. As it was sponsored by a newspaper, there were tons of photos online. Photos make it pretty clear how the water stops worked:

A garden hose came out to the street. A 55 gallon trash can was lined with a black trash bag. The can was filled with water from the hose, then a pitcher was dipped in the can and used to fill paper cups on the table.

Between the garden hose and the tra... I've been running 2-4 miles for a couple of years on a regular basis, but this year started off with a 10K program to challenge myself and to break away from the treadmill and get out on some of the really nice trails that we have around my area. Did well, had some mile split PRs and am trying to incorporate more longer runs into my weekends. I worked my way up to running half a mile, walking half a mile. Then at the start of July, my doctor took me off the beta blocker I was on for migraine prevention. (It wasn't really helping much and I was getting dizzy and came close to passing out). Since then, my heart rate understandably is higher at rest and while exerting - by about 20 bpm. So now running feels much harder! My heart rate goes up to around 160 and stays there unless ... I'm new to Spark and semi-new to running (used to run is HS and started up again about 6 months ago). I remember lots of early AM jogs when the sun was coming up, and that excellent feeling that no matter WHAT else happened that day, I had accomplished something good.

Good luck to everyone with the weight loss goals! I found it to be an excellent way to reduce stress, and challenge myself as well :-).

I'm using the Zombies, Run! 5K program, and absolutely loving it. Trying to find ways to fit it into my weekdays, since I'm at work quite a bit, and I have a loooonnng commute back and forth. For now, I'm running on the weekends. I need all the motivation I can get :-). Your support and tips are very much appreciated :-D. I was using a Polar (non GPS) HRM for the last year. My calorie burn has always been pretty high compared to my partner but I wrote it off to my exertion being much higher than my partner. His HR is always lower than mine when we run together. So this weekend using my Suunto my normal regular 60min run at 151 average came in at 600calories. This would have normally been closer to 800 on my Polar. I even contacted Polar about why it was so h... I remember telling a friend that I had to quit jogging 17 years ago when I developed a back problem so would "never be a runner". In April, I walked my first 5k race on a very hilly course. In May, I started adding running intervals to my walks. Now I can run 3/4 mile before I have to take a walk break. About 4 years ago I ran the bloomsday race in spokane, and now I can barely run 3km. There is always hope though, and that is why I have joined this team! I am running the 5km Color Me Rad race next month and am hoping to not only have fun, but also pushing myself to run the best I can! Short term goals are to run 5km, but as a long term goal I would LOVE to run 10-15km again! I am a 39 year old "almost graduate" of the C25K program. I am on week 8 and loving it! I started the C25K program b/c back in February my 10yr old came to me with a "Girls on the Run" sign-up form and begged me to do it. I figured I would walk or run the silly thing with her and then forget all about it and go on with my (sedentary) life.

Well I HATED that damn program at first! Here's my situation:

Lately I've been feeling some pain in my right foot as I hit the 2/3 - 3/4 mark of my runs. After running the other day I started feeling a slight pain( like a bruise) on the bottom edge of my heel almost on the side. It is just a slight pain I can walk on it and I ran yesterday but it is still there. I'm right now tapering for a half marathon in a week.

Any suggestions Wed, 7 Nov 2012 09:31:58 EST Beginner's Question http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50702248 How often do you run? What do you do for exercise on days you don't run? Is walking considered a break from running?

I'm trying to figure out a new exercise schedule (if you can't tell!)

Thanks.
Mon, 5 Nov 2012 14:10:20 EST Mild Injuries http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50698200 I'm not sure when something is just slight discomfort or when i need to actually see a doctor.

When I go on short runs (3-5 miles) I feel fine afterwards, I do all the stretching etc.

However when I go on longer runs (7+ miles) I'll do all the stretches then the next day the side of my foot hurts, right in the middle between the heel and the toe, and right along the sides.

i've asked a few running friends and they say it could be the shoes. the mild pain ... Mon, 5 Nov 2012 09:38:55 EST Greetings! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x123x50689173 I have never considered myself a runner. I enjoy walking my dog and such - but running is work, right? My sister talked me into doing a 5K today. I have never had more fun or felt so proud of myself. I completed my 5K in 32 minutes. So I guess I'm a runner. I want to do more 5K's and maybe move up to longer runs in the future!

I will admit, I know nothing more than putting one foot in front of the other. So I'm looking to learn and have fun.

Kitty Sun, 4 Nov 2012 17:30:22 EST Hello http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x123x50669192 I'm 26 years old and have spent virtually all of my life battling my weight. Finally, two years ago I ditched 55 pounds, ran a half marathon and completely changed my diet and lifestyle. My biggest struggle has been with emotional/disordered eating, so I've watched 15 pounds creep its way back on and I've been lacking the right kind of motivation and accountability to safely lose it; I'm the first to take it as a personal failing and weakness. I'm here to get my relationship with food on trac... Sat, 3 Nov 2012 08:37:38 EST Thoughts on New York Marathon http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50658330 Just curious what people here are thinking about it. Should they run it or not? I mean parts of New York are in absolutely destruction, people can't get gas or electricity, or in some cases food. They are still finding bodies. Wouldn't all those runner just add to the mess?

But their argument is that it brings money to the city and that it shows the world that New York is resilient.

Thoughts? Wed, 31 Oct 2012 10:41:44 EST Keeping feet warm http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50593523 I wear a very lightweight breathable running shoe that I was able to use last winter because of the mild weather. Any suggestions on how to keep my tootsies toasty when the snow falls and the temp drops? I see that Brooks makes a gore-tex waterproof shoe which is probably quite pricey. How do you keep your feet warm and dry? Sun, 28 Oct 2012 23:06:15 EST To all my friends on the east coast... re: Sandy http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50582553 My wife and I are putting all of our outdoor stuff in the basement this morning and doing last minute prep - picking up batteries for instance for our radio (just in case). Then we're going (maybe) to drive out to the coast (about 45 minutes) to check out the storm surge before the storm actually gets here (northeast ct). Be safe my friends. Sun, 28 Oct 2012 08:16:26 EST Bra for jogging http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50580826 I recently had a baby and I'm nursing. Today I tried to jog while walking and learned that my sports bra just isn't meeting that need. (It was fine before baby. I'm mostly a walker, but it was fine when I did run.) I felt like I had bouncy rocks attached to me. Any suggestions on a running bra? Does anyone know of anything i can do to help things along, so i don't have to worry about it. Wed, 24 Oct 2012 13:25:50 EST Suffer from asthma? This might help you http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50513055 I was diagnosed with asthma 12 1/2 years ago - 6 weeks after I stopped smoking. One day I just started coughing and I couldn't stop. Ever since, I've been trying to find a way to get it under control. There is no cure (dagnabit) but I have hit upon something that helps immensely.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I was using my emergency inhaler upwards of 3 and 4 times a day sometimes and was REALLY sick of it. I don't know what the long term implications of albuterol are for my lun... Tue, 23 Oct 2012 08:52:08 EST Yucky Marathon http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=1090x123x50512511 I just finished my 11th marathon. I hired a running coach, very expensive and did exactly as he instructed for the months of training. I have NEVER trained this hard for a marathon.
I had my family waiting a the finish line. I had my water belt on packed with gels, eletrolite tabs, Heed, Bonk Busters, plus plenty of course support. There was a water stop every mile.
I had done the training now it was time to bring it. My goal was 5 hours 20 minutes. I ran the first ten miles very ... Tue, 23 Oct 2012 08:12:29 EST headlamp http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50499248 Do you run with a headlamp? It gets dark early this time of year where I live, and I want to keep up with running. I have a reflective vest so cars can see me. I'm doing a Halloween-themed 5K next weekend and apparently the trail will be partially dark and the organizers suggest bringing light.

Is it heavy? Does it feel weird? I looked at some in a store yesterday but they were all packaged up so I couldn't try one on.
Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:24:42 EST Ran my first race! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x123x50497699 I ran my first race on Saturday they have not posted the official times yet but I think I did pretty well. I feel like I was in the middle group which I'm happy about. I feared I was going to be towards the end.

I was nervous going into it because I expected everyone there to be rail thin and run a 5k in 15 minutes. I was happy to find that I was not the largest person there and even happier when I started passing people during the race.

I had a great time and I'm... Mon, 22 Oct 2012 09:52:39 EST 5k to Half-Marathon? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=1090x123x50485604 I'm seriously considering entering a half marathon in March, considering that on my long runs, I'm currently running 7-8 miles. Granted, the only race I've run so far is a 5k, and have another as well as a 4 mile race planned next month, and am planning on running some SP virtual 10ks in the interim, but am I being reasonable that I'm ready for a half marathon in March?
