It's about the proper care and storage of produce to minimize waste -- and it costs nothing. Keep fruit out of the fridge -- cold air turns plums into raisins. Same goes for onions, potatoes and garlic: think cool and dry. And what to do about wet produce (lettuce for instance)? Toss it in a paper bag, then place it inside a plastic bag (recycled from the produce section). It'll stay crisp and delicious. Thu, 23 Oct 2008 13:03:40 EST Tip of the Day Did you ever have one of those days when you just seem to be nervous for no particular or known reason? Some psychologists call this 'free floating anxiety' but I call it listening to my gut. Whenever I have a day where there is something seemingly wrong and I just can't quite put my finger on it, I always (and I mean always) reach for the rose ... petals that is. There is a secret Taoist formula for a calming and soothing bath that will, once taken, wash those nerves right down the drain. I ... Wed, 22 Oct 2008 09:40:12 EST Tip of the Day Gardens are generally quiet this time of year, with tomatoes and basil brown on the vine, but oregano still stands at the ready during October. The name itself derives from the Greek words 'oros' for mountain and 'ganos' for joy! This aromatic perennial' leaves are believed to hold the world's strongest natural medicines within. But even though there is natural beauty afoot, changing leaves can leave you with seasonal allergies as well. If you shed as many tears as the leaves fall, then you may want to try a simple therapy from the world of aromatherapy. And why not? You're game to try anything as long as it's economically feasible. Buy a phone with a cord. Cordless phones are energy parasites -- they draw constant electricity in standby and charging modes. In one year, you'll cut your carbon emissions by 28 kilowatts per hour of energy -- that's enough to run a toaster for 70 hours. Mon, 26 May 2008 11:01:53 EST Tip of the Day Frugality is all the rage -- stress and dread aren't. Don't struggle to make those house payments (or rent) because it's time to downsize. Even if you can afford plusher accommodations, why waste the money? It's about being comfortable without sacrificing your comfort: Smaller doesn't have to equal down and out. Fri, 16 May 2008 15:09:31 EST Tip of the Day 'Tis the season for allergies, so take extra time when it comes to creating a nontoxic environment in your home. Use a little of that famous ingenuity to neutralize animal dander and dust mites. All you need is a pot of strong black tea (which provides a rich source of tannic acid). Store in a spray bottle -- make sure you won't stain the surface -- and spritz away. The tannins neutralize certain allergens.
