Wed, 11 Oct 2017 12:36:53 EST Check points Let's start a thread reminding each other to make sure we are covering some basic things.

In my earlier home-schooling days, I remember reading a home-schooling magazine. A mother had written in and explained what happened when she pulled her two daughters (7th and 9th grade, I believe) out of the public school.
(her reasons were because of negative behavior issues that cropped up, that had never been there before.)
She questioned her girls on what they knew, so she could... Wed, 11 Oct 2017 12:27:25 EST Hello I am new here Hello I am a homeschooling mama to 4 awesome boys. They are 16, 14, 10 and 10 going into the 10th, 9th and 5th grade. Thu, 17 Aug 2017 07:29:20 EST The Dreaded P-word We, my husband and I, talked about sending the kids to PS if I got bad again in Spring (spring is when my PTSD is usually at it's worst). I talked to my therapist today and she said absolutely, but why wait? And my husband said the same. My response was that we'll be moving in December or January and could be different schools, I would not want to move them after all that. But again, why wait. So as far as I can tell, we will be enrolling our two girls into public school,

Can I st... Wed, 19 Jul 2017 15:50:42 EST Question: Budget Okay, I think I asked this before, but DH is having a fit over how much I need for curriculum this year which is a little over $500 (binders and folders and paper not included in that price). I think that is an awesome price. I'm getting a lot of free or really cheap stuff, but some of them are a little pricey like Math U See and Shurley English and the other literature based English I'm getting for oldest DD. I won't budge on what we are getting, I have been researching all summer to find wh... Thu, 13 Jul 2017 10:42:14 EST GuestHollow Anybody familiar with I am in love with their botany curriculum, and it is free. So I took a look at their American History, and it looks pretty good too. The botany is a lot of books and activities from making a compost to growing peanuts. Basically I'll be living at the library, lol. I really like what I see, it looks like a lot of fun, but wanted to see what you all thought. I have a 4th and 6th grader, my 4th grader will be doing the botany even though it is for 6th and u... Wed, 12 Jul 2017 16:33:37 EST Room Cleaning Help!! I'm a little distressed. All this time my Oldest DD (ODD) has been telling me her room is looking better, we cleaned it 3 weeks ago, she made a little mess, I've been having her clean on it 15 minutes a day to get it back in shape... I don't know what she was doing during those 15 minutes, but it wasn't cleaning. I should have been checking on it, but I figured she's old enough to clean her own room right? I won't even describe the horribleness I walked in on when I went to pack her room yest... Mon, 10 Jul 2017 09:06:54 EST Shurley English Does anybody use or know of this curriculum? It looks pretty good, the description is just what I need for my 6th and 4th grader... is it as good as the description?

If not, or you don't know, what do you recommend? My kiddos were in CC for the past 2 1/2 years, we stopped mid year this year because oldest DD just doesn't learn that way and was getting nowhere. I'm not sure either of them got anything out of Essentials, the English/Grammar class, and before that we were doing a cur... Wed, 14 Jun 2017 15:44:23 EST Math U See? I really need something to help my oldest with math and Math U See has been recommended a lot. DH read the descriptions and says it sounds like common core. I told him it's been around a lot longer than common core and it's nothing like it... am I right? I'm horrible at math and have a really hard time teaching it, Oldest DD has had a really hard time with math because of bullying when she was at Public School. I need something that will teach us both.

What do you think of Math U S... Mon, 12 Jun 2017 12:56:06 EST Summer Slump Do you homeschool year round or do you take a break for summer?

What do you do to keep your kids preoccupied during summer? We usually go to the pool everyday but it has been closed until further notice, which is going to be a while. I don't want them constantly playing video games or watching TV... What are some fun things you can do cheap that will occupy them? Been thinking of going to the park but at the moment we are saving for moving and I can't afford the gas to go every day... Some years we do great at keeping track of the books we have read together and on our own. We're not doing so hot this year in that regard, so I thought we would start making a list every time the library bag fills up (~2x weekly). The book list is for our homeschool assessor, but I thought this could be an opportunity to share titles, too. I'm filling up the bag today for our library visit tomorrow, so I will post what we've read since Saturday tonight or tomorrow! Mon, 27 Feb 2017 12:34:06 EST I'm the newest member on the team. Hello! I just realized I'm still the newest member on the team. I hope that changes soon, and I encourage you who have been on the team for awhile to post, too.

I never really introduced myself to all of you. Mon, 27 Feb 2017 12:30:00 EST drinking water effects meeting minimum calories Anyone having troubles getting all of their minimum calories in now that they are eating mostly healthy foods, drinking lots of water, and exercising regularly? I find that after 5:00pm I still have almost one third of my calories left on most days. I try to pile more calories onto breakfast, but to be honest I am just not hungry when I wake up. Fri, 10 Feb 2017 10:02:59 EST Grammar/History Suggestions? So we have been doing CC for 2 1/2 years now, and I've finally figured out this past school year that it is just not how oldest DD learns, she's not doing well. Time for a plan B. As much as I loved CC, it is lacking in the grammar department, so I need a book to help catch her up, I was thinking starting on a 4th grade text and trying to get he caught up (she's in 5th) But I have no idea where to start! None! I don't even have an inkling on what books are good. Any suggestions? I read that A... Mon, 6 Feb 2017 07:16:05 EST Science: Does anyone know of ... I need to get better with teaching Science. I have two DD's, 3rd and 5th grade. We had a very relaxed first semester and I'm worried I haven't pushed them enough. We are behind in math, and I am nervous about that. I just bought Rod and Staff math, social studies and penmanship. We also do CC, but this year had to do so at home due to costs. I'm hoping we will be able to do the community next year. DH was really wanting to do CC, but now is worried because it does not go in depth on... Mon, 16 Jan 2017 09:26:06 EST Hello! Hi everyone. I have been on spark people for quite a while, still working toward my goals. We started homeschooling in 2012 and we love it. Wed, 3 Aug 2016 20:02:40 EST Overcoming Terrorism with Care and Prayer This has been a terrible number of years filled with hate and violence and down right evil. Sometimes it's hard to keep your 'brave' on. But we are people of HOPE and we always cling to the idea that evil will lose it's power someday.

I challenge all of us to do this:
EVERY time we get a new report of terrorism, police deaths, or parents abusing/killing their children, GET OUT THERE AND DO SOMETHING CARING for another individual. Fri, 26 Feb 2016 11:21:16 EST Getting to know you all I was just wondering how long everyone here has been homeschooling, and what your reason(s) were for doing so. This is our second year - it's really the first full year that I've homeschooled all 3 of my kids. The main reason I considered/started homeschooling was because my oldest daughter was falling between the cracks at public school (she was diagnosed with mild dyslexia and inattentive ADHD) and I wasn't convinced that the 'help' they were offering was really going to be of benefit. My m... Mon, 11 Jan 2016 08:11:29 EST Checking back in I wasn't very active when I first joined this board, but I'm trying to regain momentum in my healthy efforts. Fri, 1 Jan 2016 07:36:30 EST Hi - Just getting started Hi all - I am a Christian homeschool mom of three who has struggled with my weight for most of my life. I am currently homeschooling the older 2 but we have got off to a rough start having a baby that nurses so frequent. As our baby is nearing 6mo I know I need to start getting my body back in order. Hey Everybody, I began a team as a support group for people who are in the middle of raising children AND caring for aging parents. It's pretty tricky to balance it all and I thought Spark would be a great place to find support. The team is called The Sandwich Generation. It is a private group and needs an invitation. This team's goals will focus on finding UNWINDING time for yourself, fitting exercise in your busy day, and finding creative ways to be a blessing to your aging parent. Mostl... Mon, 5 Oct 2015 12:43:05 EST Can't I tweak these goals? So here's the thing. We started our homeschooling year today and an interesting problem that I never encountered popped up today. Even when we do work over the summer (to try to stay in a routine), the transition is always a bit strange for the kiddos because my husband is a public school teacher- so suddenly he is out of the house, usually before they wake up. Mon, 31 Aug 2015 16:57:12 EST New to the team Hi everyone. I have been with SparkPeople since May. I lost 20 pounds before joining, but just gained back 10 on a vacation. =( I am hoping joining some new teams that are a better fit will motivate me.
This will be my third year of homeschooling. My son is a 1st grader (we started with him in Pre-K). He has Asperger's, so his quirks and high IQ have made homeschooling an interesting adventure. My daughter is in her second and final year of Pre-K. My binge eating is always worse if I've had sugar during the day. Planning on a large evening snack (reserving some calories for that) and then pre-planning several healthy & satisfying options seems to work sometimes. Any other ideas?
... Mon, 28 Feb 2011 22:06:23 EST QUESTION OF THE WEEK: February 25 How do YOU bust a Plateau??

TIP #1
Make sure you are following your SparkPeople nutrition plan correctly. During set-up, did you accurately account for your level of activity? Or, if you are more or less active than when you started the program, have you changed this option in your set-up so that your caloric plan will be accurate for you? This is very important so that you don’t eat too little for your body’s needs, which can actually hinder your weight loss.

In a... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 14:35:41 EST Calculators. I was tutoring a neighbor boy that goes to public school yesterday in Math. He can do the work with a calculator but not on paper. My children are both in the 7th grade. Can we go to using calculators? My girl has such a hard time with the times tables. This would save us a lot of frustration.

I would love to have your opinions. I have also posted this on other homeschool teams, if you see it more than once that would be why.

Thank you for your thoughts. Wed, 23 Feb 2011 19:16:11 EST Lose a Kid, With a Kid Challenge. How many of you have gained weight during your pregnancies? ......yeah.
When I met my husband, and I was 20, I weighed around 120. Three years later, I was 140ish. That was totally our fault because our dates WERE Taco Bell. And we didn't realize the calories and fat that were REALLY in that food, or weren't willing to ADMIT that it would make us gain so much.
By our 1st anniversary, I weighed about 160ish, and I'm sure some of that I can blame on the HATED BIRTH CONTROL PILL. <... Fri, 11 Feb 2011 17:04:53 EST Liven Up Your Homeschool Day! Hi!
I wanted to encourage you with this idea. Purchase a poster board (mine is kinda foamy/plastic), buy two packs of colored index cards. Cut them in six squares. Using a glue stick place the squares around the poster board to create a game board. Use some of your colored index cards to make little bridges or whatever. I used pink/red for the first easy 'level' of the board, then orange, then yellow, then blue and finally green. Use the bridges to connect the colored levels. We e...
