I love anime and manga, so this team looks like a natural fit for me. Making bento looks like a fun way to control portion sizes and take a lunch to school at the same time. I go to art school and spend long hours there, and I am worried about buying food at school during the school year, I think that making bento might be a good solution to this problem. I look forward to talking to all of you in the future. Wed, 6 May 2009 12:42:20 EST New group member http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x11155x25105549 Hi everyone,

I've been on SP for a while now but I'm pretty new to bento making. I'm a stay at home mom so I don't get a lot of chance to practice. But I'm looking to get back into the work force and I intend to make a lot more bentos when I'm working. Sandwiches never did much for me as a lunch and bentos seem like a really nice way to make lunch a little bit special when you're away from home. So in the mean time, I've been collecting up an arsenal of recipes, ideas and equipme... I am an expat from Japan (native German-American)and make bentos each day of the week. I love the art of bento making, so smart are the Japanese. I would love to share recipes and bento photos with anyone interested! I do tend to make traditional Japanese items though so beware if you don't like Asian food. I'm using bentos to help me with portion control. Hubby is getting bento-ed as well. I'm not good at making anything fancy, just trying to make something that tastes good and is nutritious Wed, 11 Feb 2009 00:35:53 EST Tiffin Boxes? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x11155x22325776 Tiffin boxes are from India, I think, but has anybody used those? (They are 2 or 3 tiers, all held together with a handle. Looks similar to some bento style boxes I've seen doing websearches, except made of metal).

I'm possibly going to be buying one tomorrow, depending on the price at World Market. I think the first time I wanted to make one was when I was watching Kyoko Otonashi give Godai a bento with a hot dog octopus on Maison Ikkoku. It was just so adorable. *Sigh.* I can't wait to get back to the states to buy some decent vegetarian hot dogs.... A few years ago my sister got obsessed with anime and manga (still is), and got me into it, too, but I ended up wanting to learn more about the culture and people, and especially the food. I love the ideals of Japanese food: simplicity, variety, color and beauty. Happy to be here! I really can't remember. I came across it sometime last year browsing the net, I think. It totally caught my attention. December 31st I wrote my "Year of Doing Big, Fun, Scary Things Together" list (it's through NaNoWriMo.org (National Novel Writing Month)), and added "Make a bento box for myself at least once" to the list. I still haven't made one.

A couple weeks back I was all set, even started getting one together, but I wanted a "heart... Thanks to ZIRCADIA, the person without whom I would be clueless that this group existed, I have found a new hobby and possibly a new diet, lol. I have already located my nearest Asian food store, since I want to make somewhat authentic bento, and hope to visit there soon. I've been on Spark for a while now, and I'm finally getting in gear and *using* it. My husband and I both love to do bento lunches and snack packs, and I was so glad to find this team. Mon, 14 Jul 2008 10:42:03 EST How can we increase team involvement? http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x11155x15919676 It's been pretty quiet around here lately, and I'm just stumped.

On a different team, someone asked what makes you leave a team. On the same note, I'm curious to know what makes you stay on a team? What kind of involvement are we looking for in our teams?

I'd like to incorporate those into the team here. So, what can we do to encourage more involvement in the team? Wed, 18 Jun 2008 11:00:54 EST Change to team goals! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=203x11155x15919481 I'm super excited about this change. Thanks to popular demand, SP has made checkboxes an option for team goals. No more having to put in numbers if it's a check off sort of goal, like making a bento so many times a week.

So if you look, you'll see I've changed the current team goal to allow for checkboxes instead. Those are nice for my protein. Sticky rice is a must. Snap peas and carrots for my veggies. Tempura fried broccoli or sweet potatoe good too, but that's once in a while. And challenges that particularly appeal to you? I've set one team goal for making 3 healthful bento per week. What else would you like to see for goals or challenges? Water drinking? Mon, 26 May 2008 23:32:00 EST So salty! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x11155x15236007 Ok, so I have a confession to make. Last week, I tried my first umeboshi. I had it tucked away into my bento with my rice. When I licked the juice off my fingers from packing it, all I got was sour, but a delicious sort of sour. So when I bit into the little plum at lunch... HELLO! I was not expecting it to be so salty! Wow! Anyway, it's great with rice, but I'd definately not suggest eating it by itself. It might pickle your tongue! I have been doing my own version of ghetto bento for a while with foods that I'm used to eating. I haven't been able to find a real bento box here yet, so I am going to order one off the internet as a reward when I loose a certain amount of weight. I'm really new to all of this so I'm looking forward to learning everything. I'm a college student and I think this will keep me from eating yucky student center food. (My college has a TERRIBLE food selection.) I do need to get myself a bento box but I will make do with some gladware containers until I reach a goal or two. If anyone has some beginner tips, I'd love to hear them! I know I don't have any local shops so I purchase my items from eBay sellers, and would love some recommendations from everyone!
30 Wed, 5 Sep 2007 12:49:06 EST Noob. http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x11155x8710605 Hi there. I'm Kristen, 28, mom to two-under-five.

I was turned on to bento lunches by the Vegan Lunch Box blog and cookbook last year, but not until this week did I buy any bento lunch boxes for our family.

I finally decided to take the plunge when my son started back to preschool this year. The school asks that the kids bring HEALTHY snacks to eat in the mornings, and apparently most parents' ideas of "healthy" includes cookies and potato chips. Well, of course, my son... Wed, 5 Sep 2007 09:48:51 EST The best thing about bentos http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x11155x8638015 besides the automatic portion control, is that ever since I started taking my lunch in them I have been eating more fruits and vegetables. If I am going to the trouble of packing a bento and taking pictures of it to put on flickr then I don't want it to be full of beige food! It's kind of funny that the only reason I eat them is because they are pretty, but I guess any reason is good enough if it works. :) Fri, 31 Aug 2007 23:26:39 EST Cheap Box! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x11155x8161016 I'm not sure where to put this post, so if it needs to be moved, let me know!

I was cruising through the drugstore yesterday and found some really cool little boxes with the clicky sides and a rubber seal. Not as cute as some of the bento boxes I've seen, but a pretty cheap fix for getting started. They were at Kerr Drugs (don't know which states have these stores) and they are $1.99. i got a blue one that is about 5x8" and 2" deep. I was so excited! Unfortunatly it didn't survive ... Tue, 7 Aug 2007 16:57:50 EST my self-intro http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x11155x8019737 Hi! Hope y'all don't mind me joining in! I have a Mr. Bento, and I LOVE to use it, but I have trouble thinking of good, healthy, creative things to take for lunch. I'm hoping I'll find some interesting ideas here! I *thought* I had a good idea, fixing tortellini with a couple of tablespoons of pesto for the main dish, but then I checked the calories and fat and was floored!

Are there any other vegetarians in this group? Tue, 31 Jul 2007 22:25:55 EST New here . .. and to bentos . . http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x11155x8013147 Hello to everyone!
I am Gen and have recently joined up here at Spark, and have been doing research on japanese cuisine and ran across the bento box concept about a month or 2 ago. I have yet to get one, but I hope to soon. I love the presentations and creativity that bento lovers show. I also like the idea of cool lunch boxes that can hold the perfect amount of goodies!
I will be keeping in touch here and hopefully be set up and posting pictures of bentos soon. 4 Tue, 31 Jul 2007 16:31:35 EST Sorta new to team http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x11155x7710135 I joined a little while ago, but i haven't been active. Mon, 2 Jul 2007 12:07:58 EST New to team and Bento boxes http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=-1x11155x7199824 Hi, my name is Julea and have been doing sparks since the begining of the year. I have been lurking and not participating for over the last couple of months. I have not given up hope but need desperately to get back on track. I love bento boxes and need to get myself a cute one, actually one of my rewards for weight loss. Lunch at work is really tough. I think I do worse at work and then the day is shot. looking forward to getting some ideas and support. My small one is good for portion control, but if I want to make a bento with a lot of fruit it wouldn't fit.

I would also like a family-sized celebration bento box so I could make things to share. :)

I have an onigiri shaper that I like, but I also want some weiner shapers!

Here are some:
http://www.jbox.com/IMAGE/jddfe
http:...
