He did a phenomenal job, with the exception of one move that was lackluster and I talked to him about it. He also didn't keep his eyes on his "opponent" which kind of spoiled the effect. I said to him, "If you can make your face do what your body is doing, this will be fantastic."... Tue, 3 Jun 2008 14:05:53 EST One day down... Had my first "official" training class for September tournament last night...OMG...I think Mr. Hargis is out to KILL me... 40 !

Actually the class was very intense and I was drenched in sweat when we were done but I managed to finish everything and I can actually MOVE this morning so I consider myself lucky...ha, ha!

We started out with alternating jumping jacks, push ups, and sit ups for about the first 10 minutes of class then a quick stretch before we got our... Wed, 21 May 2008 09:35:43 EST Personal Challenge Hi everyone!

Just wanted to let you know about a personal challenge I am starting today. I haven't competed in any tournaments in about 3 or 4 years because I'm not competitive by nature, but I told Mr. Hargis on Saturday that I want to compete in our September tournament and that he has 4 months to get me in shape and help release that "inner dragon" so I can kick butt!! He said okay but I'd better make sure that this is what I want to do, because he's going to ask me again on M... Mon, 19 May 2008 10:54:36 EST May Challenge 216 Hey folks! New month = New Challenge 216

Last month we worked on strengthening our legs with the middle/horse stance challenge. What should we do this month?

This is (in the ATA at least) the Year of Mastership, and we are supposed to work on mastering our basic skills. I was thinking we could do a team challenge, either minutes or reps, of a certain technique (perhaps changing each week, or keeping it the same for the whole month if y'all ... Thu, 1 May 2008 18:44:26 EST Oh how I wish I was still in class! Hi everyone! I'm new to Spark and have been browsing the site and checking out the teams. I was glad to see a Tae Kwon Do team but I gotta say, reading all these posts has me longing for my classes.

I was enrolled in a local school about three years ago. Great school, great instructor. It's a Black Belt Academy and is affiliated with ATA. I was doing well, which was surprising to me, and I had received my orange decided belt. Not long after, I had to have surgery on my foot and ha... Sun, 13 Apr 2008 08:05:07 EST Lineage questions... So here's an interesting note. I've been researching the roots of my lineage (who I learned from, who my instructor learned from, etc.).

I was told most of it but now I've been doing some research. So here's what it looks like for me with Chang Moo Kwan:

Yoon, Byun in (First learned Chuan Fa, then shudokan)
«
Lee, Nam Suk (First actual Chang Moo Kwan)
«
Kim, Myung-soo (Still verifying that this is him)
«
William Buckley... Mon, 7 Apr 2008 15:59:06 EST April Challenge Let's Challenge each other this month. I'd like to challenge everyone to see how long they can hold a middle/horse stance. I find it great for strength conditioning - and I like to do it while watching tv. Anyone want to give it a try? Fri, 4 Apr 2008 23:42:03 EST Kids teaching I'm unhappy about something and I want to talk it out.

We have a couple of teens who are instructors (or in some cases, aspiring instructors who are allowed to teach an individual occasionally). More than once, I've gotten a student who has learned from one of these teens, and I've had to reteach them something.

For instance, I was working with one of the young blue belts on taeguk 6 and there's one place where you're all twisted up, ready to throw a roundhouse kick. H... Fri, 28 Mar 2008 09:16:09 EST Books and Supplements So I read alot and take a bunch of supplements (my wife works at Vitamin Shoppe; it makes that easier on the pocket). I'm wondering what others read and take.

Here are a few things reading-wise:
Anything by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming (YMMA Publications)
The Fighter's Body by Loren W. Christensen
The New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove
Muscle & Fitness magazine

Supplements:
Multi-vitamin
CLA
Fish oil
5-htp
Prote... Wed, 19 Mar 2008 14:08:47 EST March Challenge I would like to make a March challenge. 100 to 200 pushups a day. It may sound like to many but, you don't have to do them all at one time. Here are some examples:
1. When practicing your forms and/or techniques. After each form or 2 to 4 techniques do 10 pushups.
2. Spread them out through the day try doing 10 or more pushup every 30 to 60 min.
3. Your home watching TV pump out as many push ups as you can at each commercial break ( stay away from the popcorn though ).
4.... Mon, 3 Mar 2008 09:56:21 EST Breakings: This question has come up many times in another MA spark team that I'm on. What kind of breaking's do you do?? Is it all planned ahead for you or can you make up you own?? Do you use plastic boards for testings or wooden?? Do you have to break a brick for black belt..would it be a small brick (for building houses) or the ones your will see in a gymnasium?? If we have more to share, share it with us.

For myself, all breaking for the 14 belts are planned ahead of time. We breaking's ... Wed, 20 Feb 2008 11:05:37 EST How to get your hips involved in hand movements? I have the worst time getting my hips into my hand attacks. Punches are so-so, but things like throws, I find I'm trying to do it all from the shoulders.

Anyone have any exercises, techniques, whatever, to get this into my head? Sat, 16 Feb 2008 11:06:51 EST SparksPoints are like 1st to 12th Degrees! lol Ok, I was looking at the SparkPoints and realized there were 12 virtual "trophies" that correspond to the points. Some may think the points are kinda hokey BUT... by working them, I have learned a lot about nutrition, fitness as well as staying motivated. So... with that said, I thought I'm on the 5th trophy out of 12. Then that made me think of it in terms of martial arts and told myself I'm a 5th degree SparksPeople!

I guess you'd have to know my humor. I know this doesn't rea... Sun, 10 Feb 2008 10:04:21 EST Just starting out and lovin it 6th Kup, green belt in Kyuki-do. This is totally out of character for me,,but I love it. Our class is different than most, Our chief instrutor is a Pastor (also ex marine now navy reserves gunner) our class is Christ centered and with each form comes a verse to memorize. My daughter and I both began 5/07. Fri, 8 Feb 2008 00:55:39 EST February Challenge How many days a week do you practice your Martial Art? What kinds of things do you practice? I challenge you all to try and do "something" TKD'y for at least 30 min 4xWeekly. This can be strength training, form practice, technique practice, drills, or your classes. Post here once in a while and let us know how you're doing - share your exercise plan and maybe it will help motivate one of the team members! Fri, 1 Feb 2008 17:39:34 EST Introduction Hello!
My name is Kari. I belong to an IBBF gym in Minnesota. I am currently a red belt. I was training for my first degreee black belt when I became pregnant with my first child. I'm looking forward to getting back into the gym when life settles down a bit. Have a great day!
Kari Thu, 31 Jan 2008 11:53:21 EST How do you train outside of class? So how do you train for your TKD outside of class? Cardio, weights, isometrics, plyometrics? There are so many different schools of thinking, I'm just curious.

For me it is a mix of weights, plyometrics, and cardio in that order. Thu, 10 Jan 2008 16:06:17 EST Another new member Hi! Sorry, new to Spark and to teams, and wasn't sure if you wanted introductions under the sticky topic or separate topics... Sorry! Anywho...

My name is Matt and I've been involved in martial arts for about 7 years now. I am a 1st gup (red/black). I was supposed to test for my black in February of 2006. That got pushed back when I returned to school. Then I was supposed to test again in August of 2007, but the school closed in June! I have just found a sister-school in our... Wed, 9 Jan 2008 16:57:27 EST Testing Time Well, we had our December Testing last weekend. It was supposed to be the weekend before but we got iced out :( Things went great this time. I was REALLY nervous though, since it was my first one. But, although it was a blur to me, DD and DH say that I did great. I received my orange decided and they both received their brown recommended. They also got medals for their devotion to the demonstration team. Hubby got an award for leadership excellence for being a great instructor trainee.... Mon, 10 Dec 2007 09:44:03 EST hello i started this team awhile back. i got pregnant and then stopped exercising and coming to this site. i didnt realize that there were people in this group, so if anyone would like to be team leader..let me know. Sun, 9 Dec 2007 19:28:20 EST Hi All! HI EVERYONE!
I am relatively new to sparkpeople and am looking for a great team to help me stay motivated. As well as help out in any way I can. I have been practicing Tae Kwon Do for about 5 years now and have attained my black belt. And in December I will be testing for my second degree. Unfortunatly it seems that I have hit a wall in my weight loss goals but am not giving up because every practicioner of the martial arts knows that Perseverence is the key to your goals. Anyway thanks ... Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:47:41 EST Second degree black belt Midterm Just passed my Tkd mid term which was to do my Second degree form that has 82 moves in 2 min 10 sec.
They were 8 Of us testing at this mid term I some how got paired up with the young teens who move much faster than I, meaning I am 43 with a bum knee so to say the least it was a little rough I believe they were a little fast getting done and I was the last one to finish the form however I did end up missing 3 moves to my form which of course I beat my self up over . I have 2 years to pe... Sat, 13 Oct 2007 16:38:55 EST Let's talk about our Martial Art?? Mine is Tae Kwon Do under Master Sang Kim Martial Arts in London, Ontario. I'm will be @ 8 months by next week and I just advanced to orange on the 4th. Mon, 10 Sep 2007 12:34:00 EST Hi, I'm a new member!!! Hi all. I'm glad this team is here. I am a martial arts student, but I do not practice Tae Kwon Do. My art is Kajukenbo. I wanted to join your group because I like the martial arts clases that I take, but I am having difficulty because I am over 200 pounds. I wanted to re-commit myself to leading a more healthy life because I am of advance rank in my art and I am very physically out of shape. Fri, 20 Jul 2007 23:08:57 EST 2nd degree recommended black belt Hi I am testing on June 15th for a mid term which is pressure points and then in August I will be testing for my 2nd degree decided .I have been in Taekwondo for 4 almost 4 years now My husband and I are studying to be instructors we test for our red black collar on June 10th I am a little bit nervous I need to know white yellow and orange belt forms and the one steps I practice everyday for 1/2 to an 1 hour the memorization was hard but I feel confident that all my hard work will pay off . Sun, 3 Jun 2007 17:04:19 EST Hey, It's you! Hello Bullet,

I don't mean to be following you, but I took you advice and searched for some martial arts teams. This is one of the martial art sites that I have found. Taekwondo is a great sport and art. The resources on Sparkpeople will help me with my goal of strength and cardio. Additionally, the actual TKD exercies will help me with my goal of strength and cardio. Looks like a marriage made in heaven.

I was doing good with TKD earlier, now I am trying to tak...
