SparkPeople GIRL SCOUTING! SparkPeople GIRL SCOUTING! Team Messageboard Hello Hi everyone. I am new to this team, but not to Spark.I was a brownie for 2 years as a girl and have been a leader in a large troop in Colorado for the past 5 years. We have 35 girls Daisy-Cadette. I am the Cadette leader of 4 girls. I am excited to be here and get some new insight in how to try new ideas to make the meetings better for my girls and work on being healthier along the way. Sun, 3 Dec 2017 16:16:18 EST Project Idea For my Girl Scout Gold Award, I started a book club at at a community center for children in a low income area within my city. The issue I addressed in my project was improving literacy and reading comprehension in 4th and 5th grade children at Wesley Rankin Community Center in order to inspire a love of reading. The class in the after school program at the community center included 15 4th and 5th graders. I believed that enjoying reading would help the kids do well academically and also enjo... Fri, 19 Aug 2016 13:14:30 EST New! Hey there! I am Tricia and am from Virginia. I live in a rural area, hard to get troops starting and going, but, we have a great group this year. My girls have started participating in Scouts and love it. I signed up as a volunteer and get as excited about their adventures as they do. Last weekend for National Get Outdoors Day, we went canoeing at our local state park. My kids loved it. Can't wait to do it again. I am a Conservation Specialist with our local SWCD and love helping with the ou... Fri, 19 Jun 2015 15:22:37 EST Journey Suggestions I am going to start planning an informational presentation on Journeys. Thu, 8 Nov 2012 10:08:54 EST What would you do? I have a troop of Cadettes and two co-leaders (A & B) who have been family friends without daughters in the troop. We've been having conflict between the leaders to the point where this summer my co-leaders pretty much stopped talking to me.

After a meeting a week or so ago when my daughter was in the car we had a huge argument and one of my co-leaders (A) went home and facebook unfriended me, my husband and my daughter. Mind you, my daughter and my husband had no knowledge of or... Fri, 26 Oct 2012 09:02:44 EST types of art badges for brownies? Since we worked toward the painting badge on our own, and my daughter's troop is planning on having a pottery event for the rest of them to earn their painting badge, is there another badge she earn while participating with the other girls? Thu, 18 Oct 2012 06:56:13 EST Glam Day at Camp Dellwood today My daughter and her troop are going for a half-day of fun activities at Camp Dellwood - making lip gloss and other goodies they can pamper themselves with :-) Had to wake up early so we can all be out the door by 7:30 this morning! I'm not going with her, just dropping her off and picking her up, so I'll be anxious to hear what stories she has to share when she's done. Sat, 13 Oct 2012 06:19:06 EST Investiture/ Rededication help needed! Ok, so I'm still working on this!! A new issue has arisen. We basically have 3 types of girls in our new troop
1) new girl scouts.
2) girls that were daisys last year
3) girls that were daisys AND they did a bridging ceremony and were pinned w/the insignia tab

So, the issue is, for the girls who were daisys, they will be having a rededication. Some have their brownie insignia tab from a bridging ceremony, some don't. Should we just re-pin all the girls together, o... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 14:03:56 EST Have any other girl scout done thiis?? Thu, 27 Sep 2012 20:14:23 EST Went to the Humane Society Last Night My daughter and I took a full tour of the facility after-hours, so it was very informative and we learned a lot about the animals there. I was blown away by how they are so caring and the animals are treated well, and the fairly large space they have! I didn't realize that this particular location is privately run and strives for adoption of ALL their animals and they don't euthanize. I was very glad to hear that! But most importantly, my daughter was in LOVE with all the animals and grav... Fri, 14 Sep 2012 06:46:38 EST do fundraising walks count toward anything? I am considering taking up one of my in-laws on the offer of walking with her in the Juvenile Diabetes walk that will be held here in a couple of months. She is bringing her kids to it, and I was considering having my daughter come along. I didn't know if it is something that could potentially count toward any GS activities or badges? Thu, 23 Aug 2012 06:22:37 EST Question about the star pin & WAAGS pin Can someone explain to me if the girl scouts get that star shaped pin AFTER a year in GS or during their first year? I asked at the store, and she said after, but read something that made me think once they were registered, they got it.

Also, the WAAGS pin, when/how do they get that? Mon, 13 Aug 2012 23:40:10 EST Investiture We're starting a new Brownie troop, and I'm curious about investiture. Did you do it w/your troops yourselves or was it something done with your service unit? I've sent an email to the SU lady, but havent heard back. It sounds like a sweet ceremony.

Also, when did your troop pick a crest?? I see it is available for Brownies to do, even though years ago it wasn't available to them. It sounds so fun!! I'm not sure what point in the year we should do that.. Fri, 10 Aug 2012 16:57:32 EST is there a badge for planting trees and flowers? This summer, we spent an hour volunteering at a local park - helping them plant some trees and flowers. Does this count toward any badge? It was another question I had with the local council and couldn't get an answer! Sat, 28 Jul 2012 08:46:36 EST What are the requirements for the Pets Badge? I was wondering if I had my Brownie volunteer at the Humane society if that would count as a way for her to earn the Pets badge, or if I should have her be in charge of our family cat's needs more?? I only have inserts in the Journey book for a few badges and their requirements, and don't even know which ones are worth buying so that I can have all the info! I wish I could just have a full listing of what you have to do for each badge, or even be able to read all about them online! It has ... Thu, 26 Jul 2012 07:49:19 EST Lemonade Day and the Career and Penny Power Badges This May, my daughter participated in our state's Lemonade Stand Day, and we received an email from our local council that she could earn the Career and Penny Power badges. I inquired about it, but was not given any further information, other than to be told that her participation would count toward those badges! I don't have all the inserts in the Journey book, but don't see that they are even shown in the index. Can anyone advise me with this with knowing what exactly she was supposed to... Thu, 26 Jul 2012 07:45:54 EST I'm a mom to a 2nd year Brownie Hi everyone,

My daughter is going into her second year of girl scouts as a Brownie (we sat out for Daisies) in Central Indiana. I was never interested in going into scouting, so this has been a whole new experience for me entirely! I'm so excited that SP has a page for GS so I can get some tips of health for us both to take part in, and chat about different things.

She is changing schools this year to be in a gifted and talented program, but we are still having her sta... Thu, 26 Jul 2012 07:39:15 EST Another Girl Scout Gold idea - Thoughts? Here we go again. My daughter emailed the council six days ago and still no response. So while we waited I thought we would reach out to you for ideas.

She asked if she could do "Cupcakes for a Cause."

Making cupcakes to donate to different organizations. She could make cupcakes for the Ronald McDonald house, cupcakes for fundraiser events such as Duck's Unlimited banquets, PTO fundraisers, Girl Scout & 4H bake sales. She could donate cupcakes to personal fundraiser ca... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 22:39:09 EST The New Girl Scout Program Girl Scouts has been into change since I can remember. Constantly changing uniforms~ a big publicity mistake, I always thought, atempting to cater to the wrong targets. And every decade or so they revise and reorganize, which is good. But this time I was amazed by the enormity and challenge of the changes. Those leaders who had finally gotten all trained and experienced and comfortable with all aspects of the program suddenly found themselves at sea. Most people resist change, I think. Es... Sun, 15 Jul 2012 04:35:17 EST Hi Scouters~ this must be where I belong I'm a green grandma. Our family has a long history of scouting, going back to my mom who started in the 1920s. I've been a leader most of my adult life. Right now I'm not, but I keep busy helping my granddaughters. One especially seems to want to do everything out there. Since the end of last month was the deadline for finishing up all retiring badges, we've been extremely busy. Not only that, she's bridging to Juniors, so she also wanted to earn all the new badges for Brownies before s... Wed, 11 Jul 2012 01:27:47 EST Summer activities What do you do with your troops in the summer?

I usually get the girls together to do a journey, but this summer they are all working on awards, so I'm doing one on one meetings to help the girls with their Gold proposals. Mon, 25 Jun 2012 21:32:54 EST Volunteer Appreciation Events Do you (or your Service Unit) have any events for leaders and other volunteers each year? I have been hosting a tea for the past three years. I do enjoy planning and doing this event, but I would like to add some other elements or think about changing up what we do every year. This year, of course, is special since it is the 100th Anniversary, so I am doing a Girl Scout
themed tea and making the decorations and favors to fit the theme. I am especially interested in any GS party games for... Sun, 15 Apr 2012 12:26:08 EST Girl Scout Help Hello all, I'm wondering if you would help me out and cast a vote on Facebook? I wondered what other excuses you've heard? Thu, 15 Mar 2012 00:29:34 EST Happy Birthday Girl Scouts! Wishing you another hundred years of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Mon, 12 Mar 2012 08:11:24 EST 100th Anniversar - How are your girls celebrating? My Brownie troop is doing 100 activities of something at each meeting.

In December, they made 100 snowflakes for the nursing home.
In January we watched the Rose parade and did the quiz that went with it for the Girl Scout 100th Anniversary float.
In February, they did the Fair Play badge and learned about the game of Lacrosse and practiced some of the Lacrosse practices (such at the Stop - where you need to stop moving when the whistle blows) 100 times.

My Mem... Sun, 12 Feb 2012 21:53:39 EST Inspiring Girls from our Gold mtg: What inspires U We had a training for girls / adults about the Gold Award requirements today.

I think this is one of my favorite things I am involved with in Girl Scouts. These girls are so inspiring!

We had one girl make the transition from collecting donations for an animal shelter (great community service, but not a Gold Level Preoject) to brainstorming on how she could put together an awareness day on the importance of spaying and neutering and how she might be able to provide that... Sun, 12 Feb 2012 21:38:31 EST ABC bakery Since our council merged with another council, and we sell Little Brownie cookies, ABC cookies are harder to find. In the past week I've heard of 2 different girls that have quit or are thinking of quitting the program because of "too much reading & book work." I know that this is a leadership issue but what more can I do besides steering them towards a different troop?? The one girl (the one who quit) I talked into coming back, registering as a Juliette & acting as a Jr leader for my Brownie Troop. The other I'm sending mom info about another Troop I know about. As a background, I have 10 Cadettes/Seniors (8th and 9th grade). So one issue is they talk, text and are generally wild at the meeting. They act more like when they were Brownies. They get aggrevated at each other, yet they do it to each other. I suggested troop rules . . . so they made a rule not to talk while someone else was talking. But that didn't seem to help. Thu, 15 Jan 2009 08:23:20 EST Cadette Event I am planning a Cadette Camp. I am not going to plan much for activities, but want a couple things that they can do if they want to. So looking for some ideas on that one.

I'm doing a "Pink" theme. Pink lemonade, pink paper plates and napkins, strawberry cupcakes, etc. Any other ideas for pink foods or decorations, etc. Id like to find a simple service project that might relate to breast cancer, just not sure what.

Thanks Kris Mon, 12 Jan 2009 09:07:52 EST Let's Count Cookies!!!! Mon, 15 Dec 2008 19:46:14 EST GS Awards I have a Cadette troop, and my girls/moms kept getting confused between the different awards (silver, Community service, leadership, etc.) not to mention what used to just be badges as a Junior, now at the Cadette level can be IPs, focus books or journey. I made a list of the awards available at the Cadette level (along with a description) . . . I came up with SIXTEEN. I'd be glad to email to anyone that wants - I don't know of a way to attach a document here.
Does anyone thing that mi... Wed, 10 Dec 2008 13:05:39 EST How did you fare on Turkey Day? Well, for the US folks, the first of the big holidays is past. Let's take a poll - how did you do? Up, down (and how much) or stayed the same?

I stayed the same (had extra time, so got back to working out) Mon, 1 Dec 2008 16:00:20 EST Camping IP I am taking my Cadette girls camping the weekend before Christmas ("The Ultimate Christmas Camping Event"). Of course they want to earn an IP. I looked and wow, there's one called "camping". The weird part is that I read it and most of it can't be done WHILE you are camping. Anybody familiar with this? I miss chatting with everyone. I went to a coucil retreat for enrichment training on Sat. One session was about silver awards. I know the girls have to come up with their own "passions" but my girls are hounding me for ideas. Our council discourages GS focused activities, so that leaves out try-it workshops, etc. Thought I'd put it out to all you great minds for some projects I could throw out to get them going. Mon, 20 Oct 2008 15:52:02 EST Hello ! New Brownie Leader Here! Hi Everyone,

I have been a member of Spark for awhile, trying to get back on track (once again!) I am a new leader of a Brownie Troop with 18 girls. Last year was my daughter's 1st year and I took over this year as leader. I am trying to muddle my way through! So glad I found this team - hopefully I can pick up some tips from veteran leaders. I live in Central New York, about a 1/2 hour west of Syracuse. Wed, 15 Oct 2008 05:28:14 EST Halloween is Coming And to us GSers - also Juliette Low's b/day. What does your troop have planned? Service projects, parties, etc.?
Last year we took treats (halloween decorations) to an assisted living facility. This year we are opting for a costume party.
Our SU is reviving a game we did a couple years ago. Juliette Low trivia using a life size playing board (think candy land) and "decorated people" as playing pieces. Lots of fun for a large group. Tue, 14 Oct 2008 13:14:26 EST Easy help! I was also a cub scout leader and taught second grade sunday school. Fri, 5 Sep 2008 08:08:34 EST Recruiting I was just wonder what some of the other councils/service units do for recruiting. We hold rallies at the elementary schools in the two or three weeks after school starts. We try to send flyers home in the first week of school, but sometimes it's difficult to say when they actually get put in the girls' take home folders.

On that note, who pays for your recruiting materials? We had issues this year with the council stating that the service unit has to pay for printing flyers if ... Wed, 20 Aug 2008 21:03:45 EST Hello from Bandera County Texas!! I love Girl Scouts and it's nice to have found a SparkTeam of other Girl Scouts!!! Wed, 20 Aug 2008 13:22:08 EST Boo Hoo Well, I am up 6 pounds from a week ago. Yes, I went out to one Mexican meal, but tried to be better the next few days to make up for it. I really, really don't know what happened. I had been on such a good role, finally losing 3 pounds this month. I am having trouble finding things in the closet that fit. Thu, 31 Jul 2008 11:52:49 EST Hello from College Station, TX! Hi! I just found reference to this group through a Yahoo! group and thought I would swing in to see what was going on. I am starting my 6th year as a troop leader (doesn't seem like it has been that long). We started as a Daisy troop with 6 girls and are now entering our second year as Juniors with 12 girls. It has been amazing to watch these girls grow and develop into such courageous and confident young ladies. I am also on our service team (the newsletter editor) and a council trainer. W... Mon, 28 Jul 2008 11:20:32 EST Unidentifiable Jr Badge Hi Gang!!! My daughter brought home a badge that they say she earned but we can't figure out what it is! She doesn't think she earned it. It has a green background with what looks to be a yellow & brown checkered mug that has a hammer, a rolling pin & a paint brush sticking out of the mug. The paint brush is actually sitting across the hammer & the rolling pin.

I can't find any mention of it at "" Do any of you have any idea what it might be??? Sun, 27 Jul 2008 08:27:52 EST EAST COAST PEOPLE Just a curious question. I here back east you send your kids to camp for many of weeks or almost all summer. Is that true? Sat, 26 Jul 2008 15:55:10 EST The Girl Scout camp and Council that my daughter is attending right now has away for us to send emails. So I sent my very first one a few minutes ago. She only gets the notes, but can't respond to them. She will have to respond in a old fashion letter. But I think this is pretty neat. Since mail can take anywhere from 3 to five days getting their. The council only allows emails coming in and that's it. I paid the small amount of seven dollars. So I can have seven letters sent to her. Now if I... Thu, 24 Jul 2008 09:00:37 EST Cadette Trip Wow, my asst. leader just emailed me that if you are going on a 5+ day trip over state lines, you had to turn in a form 9-12 months ahead of time to council. That seems a bit excessive. Our goal is to go to Savannah, GA next summer but if we can't raise enough money (we are planning a reality check the end of this year), we will drop back to our 2nd choice trip - New Mexico. Guess we will have to move up our decision. Anyone else's council have to plan that far ahead on forms? Wed, 23 Jul 2008 14:49:39 EST Any GS Summer Camp Veterans out there? I thought about manicures, but got some feedbck from Brownies that it wasn't too cool. It can't cost too much as the SU is low on funds. They can be mean, but the word click doesn't meen mean. But I do believe it is where girls group together and others might feel like a outsider, because of this. Am I right in my definition? I feel that this has happened in our troop. I am not the leader I only help in our troop. But this is the one thing our leader said she didn't want happening five years ago. But now I see it has happened. When I mentioned it. I could see a look on my leader's face... Please help, I am getting desperate. Tue, 13 May 2008 04:16:13 EST Back from Spring Conference WOW, my head is spinning with all I experienced and learned at the Spring conference in NJ. It was an interesting mix of staff and volunteers from a bunch of Councils. I was surprised at some of the animosity between some people from councils that are merging. We (3 staff and 2 volunteers from VT) traveled down with four (2 staff, 2 volunteers) from New Hampshire and we found we're pretty close to being on the same page. We've been working on the merge for quite awhile though.
There ... The Hostel cost 25.00 dollars per girl and we got breakfast of toast, bagels, cream cheese, ora... Mon, 12 May 2008 16:58:11 EST New Girl Scout Team FYI-There is a new GS team. I'm a backup for when leaders can't make the meetings and I just went with the troop on their first weekend camp out. I lost 3 lbs this weekend (weighed myself before we left out of curiosity). This other message came from the team leader. Is our team leader still active? Wed, 23 Apr 2008 13:22:03 EST FUND RAISING IDEAS The majority of our girls are becoming Cadet's this year. We always need extra money and I have heard as we get older it becomes harder to earn money the cookie route. We had a lot on money to earn this year, because we are going to San Francisco for our bridging ceremony. Mon, 14 Apr 2008 07:33:22 EST ideas Due to scheduling and what our troop has decided it wants from Brownie scouts we have had a meeting a month and an "outing" a month this whole year. It has worked out great! This summer we intend to do a campout, a week long day camp with our service area, and then maybe another event. Now looking ahead to next year I would like some new "monthly events" that the girls would enjoy. It is our last year before juniors when we really kick it up a notch. Last week we had our leader appreciation dinner (at a Mexican restaurant no less - blame me). My husband was there to move some stuff around for us. Afterwards, he had these comments: "My image of a GS leader was a healthy, fit person who sets an example for the youth. Do you realize most of the leaders were overweight?" Wed, 30 Jan 2008 14:03:45 EST Making Decisions Just wanted to get some ideas on how to handle a decision in our troop. We voted on what service unit event to do and it was a tie between a spa day and a daddy daughter dance. So the leaders suggested we do the dance in the spring as it's easier (we have done a couple before) and then do the spa day as a fund raiser in the fall (which will give us time to make and try out facials, etc.). So far so good, the girls were all for that. So now we are voting on the theme. You guessed it - a t... Wed, 30 Jan 2008 13:55:56 EST Thinking Day Food Good Morning All! For the life of me I can't find it now that I want to do the craft. It was in a Canadian Guiding Magazine. Has anyone tried this and how do I go about doing it with 10-14 year olds. Do I dilute the bleach? 24 Tue, 16 Oct 2007 09:56:33 EST GS cookies for troop This spring my girls sold GS cookies to donate to the troops. We had a soldier in IRAQ from then church we meet in, so we wrote letters, sent pictures and cookies to him. A few weeks ago he was at church and I asked him about the cookies. Can Brownies help and do they get recognized without earning the award? This is our idea: We want to help out the local Violence Shelter, with shoeboxes of necessities & security blankets for the babies. The brownies are working on a quilt and want to donate it. We also want to paint the school ground. Ok, so brainstorm for me!! thanks Paula Tue, 4 Sep 2007 22:58:00 EST I'm getting so stressed already! Ok, I am a brand new troop leader - Junior level. Last year I did attend almost all Brownie meetings with my daughter, but that's all - no experience here at all.
When I decided to be a jr leader, I was thinking a small troop, maybe 6-8 girls.
