emoticonHello, everyone! Walked 2 miles Monday, traveled into Tookland and am heading to the slopes of Green Hill Country.

Missyshmoo and Gamergirl...you are both really traveling on! I wish I could keep up with you, but have to move at my own pace. Hopefully I'll pick up speed as I roll along...See ya when I see ya...

I didn't get any walking in this weekend (sigh!) and it's supposed to rain Thursday - Sunday this week. But I did manage to get in 2 miles this morning. So I'm up to 16.2.

Hi...I slipped into the water just past the plank bridge and spent a few days drying off. I did add 1.5 miles Sunday.

Missyshmoo; Yes, I am a Lost fan! However "Badrobot" is from a cartoon-type ending after the credits for Alias. (It's very short and quick - easy to miss.)

Also, I have a route that I measured out by car for mileage up and down my street. And at work we have a crosswalk that connects two buildings that has the mileage posted - walking back and forth a certain number of times will add up to a mile.

5total/453togo Here's to Rivendell!

The weather was beautiful today so I got in 4 miles. I stopped in a birch grove and ate a frugal supper and am almost at the Stock Rd. (Total: 14.2)

And I'll have to start figuring out how far away things are close to home so that I know how much I've walked. (assuming that my kids won't interfere with any walking plans)

Gamergirl,
i usually clock the miles in my car with my trip odometer and i always walk at the same three places so i dont have to keep clocking. really rainy days i walk on my treadmill. you can buy a good pedometer at brookstone. they are more acurate than the cheaper models. if your looking for a round about mileage you can get one at walmart for $10. see you on the road to rivendell

I got in another 3.2 before I got unmercilessly sucked back into work. Hobbiton is now hidden from sight and I'm walking towards a frugal supper. (Total: 10.8)

How do you measure the miles that you walk? I've just been going around a marked track, but I don't have that luxury on the weekends.

Badrobot - My times of slow going will start happening soon! I have to go a conference for a week.

ROFL Caryn!

When I read that I had this image of Mt. Doom, with all of us tossing huge blobs of cottage-cheese like fat into the fire. Quite possibly Middle Earth's biggest 'fry daddy'? It's a disturbing image, much like the whole Gollum/Frodo scuffle - and I may now be cured of fried foods forever! LOL

I'm glad everyone is having fun with this Challenge.
Good companions make the road less weary - thanks for joining in with me!

Hello Fellow Travelers!

The walk to Rivendell will be starting soon...May 1st is right around the corner.

I hope the Peoples of the Middle-earth are ready to greet us. Aragorn beware!

"The Fellowship of the Spark" might be a good way to identify us to the Hobbiton residents...What does everyone think? I like it!

Everyone have a good week and prepare for the beginning of our journey. Good luck to all...

I was going to say that folks might want to put their walking goals reached into their signature lines as we go on. (Sorry, somehow it ate my post!)

Some links for you, Badrobot:

http://www.tuckborough.net/
http://www.danielgovar.com/taba/book.html

The first link is to "The Thain's Book", and acts as an Encyclopedia of Middle Earth in the Third Age.
The last one, if you click on the "Lore" link on the left hand side, will open up to info on all the known races of middle earth, and has some great info on the locations we will be heading to as well!

If you want some more in-depth looks at Tolkien's world, I recommend visiting http://www.glyphweb.com/ARDA/ for the Encyclopedia of Arda.

Welcome aboard everyone!

How many miles a day, and how long it ultimately takes you, is strictly up to your discretion. I figure we will begin on May 1, and keep travelling until August 1, see how far we are, and compare mileage. If folks want continue to walk the whole LOTR trilogy, to Mt. Doom and back again, we can keep going. The website I quoted earlier has all the mileage goals calculated for us.

Some of us will start small - I mean, it might take you a week to get to Buckleberry Ferry, and that's OK! We don't want anyone overtaxing themselves.

Bring Aragorn, bring Gandalf, anyone you like. Bring the audio books or the soundtrack from the movies on your walk! Recite the Lay of Luthien in Elvish, if that's your thing.

The thing that I love most about this journey, and in particular sharing it with others, is that it is a fun way to set goals. Also, thinking about Tolkien's works is a lovely distraction from that nasty hill near my house (I refer to it as Fanuidhol)!

I am ready. I need a great challenge and I am not afraid. Alas, this could be the journey I need to give me purpose. I must keep in mind...458 miles.

To Rivendell!

When shall we go forth?

It is 458 miles from Hobbiton to Rivendell.
Are you up for the journey?

I'd like to do the Walk Through Middle Earth again and as Frodo and Sam can attest to, it's always easier with a friend.

Mileage for the entire Middle Earth Walk can be found at the website listed below:
