OH Man. I have a photo of me on my SparkPage at Cold Stone at Thanksgiving time, indulging in the large size of the Cocoa Banana Cabana. That would be, like, 1000 calories, I bet. Oh so good, though. Darnit, now I'm hungry for that! Sabatage!!

oh now I want a blizzard for lunch. I love DQ, but only allow myself to have it occasionally. and yes I have been know to opt for a small blizzard for lunch which I'm sure was still better than having a burito from the mexican place next door. Obviously I don't do this every day or even every week, but every once in a while.

I selected the right omelette too. But I would never get either of them. I think both of them have too many calories and fat in them. If I was to get an omelette I always get an egg white omelette with lots and lots of veggies, no cheese ever. But of course you have to watch how they prepare them. They definitely don't use pam when preparing so I go for a little olive oil versus butter or reg. oil.

A friend of my mother's used to poke fun at overweight people at restaurants who order dessert. My mom put her in her place everytime by pointing out that it is better to go out and have a piece of pie rather than making a pie at home and eating the whole thing.

DEBRAMN51 thats how I do it now. if I want a cookie and its been awhile since I've had one, I get ONE at the bakery. then I'm not tempted to eat the whole package. same with ice cream. KCBIKERGAL I agree. Thats why certain things aren't allowed in my house :) of course with the oldest being 18 and driving and having his own money, I can't control what he buys :)

Ants on a log! How cute. We love apples w/pb. Actually, his favorite are gripz cookies, about 130 a packaage, have to learn the sugar content. There will be more fruits and fresh veggies from now on. He can't (and shouldn't) have sugary snacks. Come to find out, he does not get them at home. No wonder he loves coming to my house.

Pinky, I've just had this discussion with my daughter about her (almost) 8 yr old stepdaughter. No child "has" to have junky snacks. It just wouldn't happen in my household! (Of course, they probably wouldn't like coming to my house much either - oh well!). Here's what I would offer them: cheese, nuts, carrots, celery (maybe with peanut butter and raisins? "Ants on a log"!), whole wheat bread (toasted or not - I like mine toasted) with peanut butter, or cottage cheese (maybe with some berries in it - strawberries are divine in cc!). I don't care how much a kid "screams" that they have to have cookies, chips, candy, etc. Who's running the show anyway? You (an adult) or the child? Get 'em while they are young and teach them healthy eating habits NOW!

Well, now I have to rethink my food intake. According to this, I'm a sugar junkie! Doesn't help I babysit my girlfriend's 8yr old son, who insists on snacks. He will be getting more healthy snacks from now on. Good thing his mom watches what she eats, so, it won't be so bad for him. Less sugar? I guess more fruit snacks? anybody got any tips?

OH! the amount of sugar in the foods we eat every day is shocking to say the least. I know it is an eye opener for me. Maybe I will have a little better time losing weight now that I realize the amount of sugar I have been consuming. And, I thought i was doing so good by not putting any brown sugar on my porridge every morning.

I have learned over the years that certain things I can not have in the house and certain places I can not go because I know I don't have the discipline to eat in moderation. so yes I struggle with that too. But I have also learned that having an "all or nothing" approach doesn't work for me. I have no forbidden foods. For me, its about learning portion control and learning to make healthier choices about the treats I do allow myself.

i have come to realize and accept that i absolutely cannot eat out at this time in my life. its like restaurant and fast food has become a hallucinagenic!! to me - i lose all sense of time and space and just crave more, more, more. it takes a good two days to "come down" from my cravings. i know this is about double chocolate cookies, but one thought lead to another... does anyone else struggle with this too?

cookies are one of my down falls. And while I could easily fit ONE of those cookies into my weekly calories, I know that if I got a package, I would eat it all in one day. It is good to have choices though.

I really like the showdowns. I try to stay away from cookies all together or buy the plain shortbread, but proud to say I now choose a Kashi granola bar if I have to have something like that. They have some nutrition and fiber way better than a cookie and they taste really good. Have a happy and healthy day Kitt

I haven't had that problem with Applebee's though I always ask to have no butter on my food. As for Subway, I choose the veggie on the whole wheat, and it's only in emergencies(like when we are traveling by car a lot)that I ever eat at anyplace like that. As for dining out, I always try to stick with seafood, and always ask for no sauces or butter on anything, plus change any side to extra steamed veggies.

I love the showdowns. They are very imformative and sometimes enlightening. It's good to know that the roly poly tuna is a good option if I forgot my lunch. Especially if it's on wheat bread. WTG SP. Does anyone know if these are kept in an archive? I'd like to go back and read them or store them somewhere?

It's sad but true...when I started looking into Subway, their "healthy" choices aren't really all that great. Now, granted, the pizza and meatball varieties are worse. Haha!
I have been using Smart Ones meals when I'm really low on time and money, but I haven't researched them. I would assume they're high in salt.
A note about Applebee's for anyone who wants to know...weight watchers implies the caloric and fat content to be PRE-greasy grill. I'm not sure how they do it in other areas, but I have to go in and request that they wipe down the skillet before they cook my shrimp. Otherwise it comes out dripping with butter and tasting like red meat. I would guess that anyone consuming some of the things they've tried to pull off as weight watchers friendly to be more like 400 cals and 10 grams of fat rather than 2 and 210. Just a side note though...might spark a bit of controversy and I wouldn 't want that.
Take care and if you ever need/want, email me!

I totally agree about Applebees! We are traveling by car a great deal(our children play college sports)and the two places I know I can eat guilt and stress-free are Applebees and Subway and the food tastes great too! It really helps you stay focused when you know you have healthy alternatives.

Holey Moley! Those chocolate smoothies are 1/3 of my days total calories! I'd have to have it as a meal and snacks for the day. Instead I'd much rather go to Max and Erma's and have a great tasting strawberry smoothie for 124 calories! All fruit, no ice cream, no protein or malt powders added.

I love reading how the 2 foods compare. It is mind boggling to think of the fat and calories people, including myself, have consumed eating out. I can't wait to try the Applebee's Chicken Quesadilla -- yum! Great way to make better choices and to be prepared with information!

I've never seen any of the foods featured in the food showdown around this area, so I have not tried any of them, but it is interesting to read and try to guess which one is the best one for you.

I find these Food Showdown articles interesting, though I would never eat anything that is featured in them. If they show people how unhealthy they really are, than that's a good thing, however, if people are actually eating this food, it's a big mistake. I truely believe that we need to lose our old bad eating habits and adopt new ones, if we continue to try and find ways to accomodate those old bad habits, than our weight loss will only be a short-term thing. I know that I cannot afford this to be short-term it has to be for the rest of my life. So, I'll continue to read with interest these comparisons, but thanks but no thanks.

I've tried Auntie Amy's products and they're great. I'd like to know why all packaged foods find the need to contain so much sodium. Does anyone know of good tasting products without the salt?

I've never seen the "Amy's" products around here but will try them if I see them. I do eat several of the organic frozen meals by Cedarlane. LEAN Pockets do have only 7 grams of fat. I don't remember the exact calories...about 210 or something close to that. They are actually very good but I rarely eat them because I have to keep fat grams even lower than that (health reasons). I buy them in bulk at Sam's all the time for my teenagers (and their ravenous friends) and they devour them. That's a pretty good taste test if you ask me!

Amy's Cheese Pizza in a Pocket Sandwich is the clear winner here. It packs all that cheesy, pizza taste into a handy 300-calorie pocket with 9 grams of fat and 3.5 grams of saturated fat. On top of that, it's trans-fat-free and boosts your fiber (4 grams) and protein (14 grams) intake. Hot Pockets 4 Cheese Pizza is the sore loser here. Not only is it higher in calories (390), but it contains more than twice the fat (20 grams or 31% of your daily value) and double the unhealthy saturated fat (7 grams or 37% of your daily value). It's also much higher in sodium, and while it lists zero trans fats on the label, it does contain partially hydrogenated oils (which means trans fats ARE present but add up to less than 0.5 grams). Amy's Organics can be found in the natural foods section of your supermarket. Try their Roasted Vegetables in a Pocket to save even more calories and fat and still get great taste! I love Hot Pockets, so when I read this food showdown about Amy's Cheese Pizza in a Pocket with only 300 cal. and 9 grams of fat, and organic, I knew I would be replacing the Hot Pockets with Amy's Cheese Pizza in a Pocket. I will also try The Roasted Vegetables. Gia

There are very few foods that I cannot resist...my will power is pretty strong. BUT I cannot pass the pretzel place (it's not Aunt Annie's, it's better) in the mall. The smell traps me every time. I do order it no butter & no salt so it's not quite as bad. They are not bad as far as fat grams are concerned.

Today's Food Showdown was Auntie Annes butter vs dipping sauce.. Auntie Anne's pretzels: butter vs. dipping sauce Auntie Anne's Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels are warm, chewy, and downright delicious. Compared to other mall food fare, these options only take a few of your shopping dollars, but will they add a lot of inches to your waist? All of Auntie Anne's pretzels are available without butter and you also have your choice of dipping sauces. Here are two options, both for their sweet Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel. You're trying to save calories without sacrificing flavor. So will butter or light cream cheese be your lower calorie topper? The Low-Cal Winner Auntie Anne's Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel (no butter) with Light Cream Cheese This is a tricky one, but the Light Cream Cheese dip (a 1.25-ounce serving size) comes in lighter than that butter coating that they spread on the pretzel. This option, with the butter-free Cinnamon Sugar Bagel, dipped in Light Cream Cheese will cost you 420 calories, 8 grams of fat (12% daily value) and 4 grams of saturated fat (18% daily value). Adding that wash of butter to the Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel, even without additional dips, will set you back 450 calories, 9 grams of fat (14% daily value) and 5 grams of saturated fat (27% daily value). Overall, every Auntie Anne's pretzel is lighter without the butter. Skip on that and you'll save between 30 and 100 calories. Order the butter-free Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel (with no dip) and you'll take in 350 calories, just 2 grams of fat and 0 grams of saturated fat. I used to love Auntie Anne's pretzels - but at a 1/3 of the days calories I think I'll pass on them thanks :D It's a filling snack but for a snack the amount of calories are insane... though the garlic is way better than the butter - i think i'd be afraid to see the number of calories in that
