If someone keeps bringing in sweets to the breakroom, how about typing up a little anonymous note and leaving it there for the person/s to see about how some people (you're not the only one who feels the way you do) really feel about this "habit." You might also suggest a challenge to your colleagues to find some healthy, sugar-free recipes for a snack bakeoff. Many of us are tired of trying to resist those sweets - and if there were a healthy alternative, it might be just what others want too! emoticon

Get more butternut squash! The one that I have cooked and in the fridge now is soooo sweet! I also need to learn to use Vietnamese (a/k/a Saigon) cinnamon more. Our health food store here in Plymouth stocks it - and it's strong and sweet! Put it on oatmeal and you don't miss the sugar! Also, I have "Monkfruit" in the house for my son's herbal tea. It's about the only sweetener that's safe and doesn't increase the cravings for sugar.

Be vigilant about reading ingredient labels for hidden sugar in foods. The difference in things like tomato sauce will surprise you.

I have given up soda/diet soda and replaced it with flavored seltzer water and just plain water. I also have gotten dove chocolates/bite sized and will have one of those 1x a day if I am wanting something sweet/chocolate. Good for portion control and 1 bite sized piece is only around 40 calories.

Our break room always has tons of sweets... I started buying really good dark chocolate to keep at work. Rather than take the oreos or whatever sitting on the table in the break room, I have a square of dark chocolate with my tea.

It's expensive enough that I don't binge on it (because I want to make it last), and the flavor is so intense when you eat it slowly and let it melt on your tongue that one square really does do the trick to curb that craving. At only about 60 calories a square, this is working for me!

Right now I have Godiva, but Trader Joe's "Pound Plus" dark chocolate is pretty good too, and you get a huge chocolate bar (literally more than a pound) for $5-6 so not too expensive.

By the way, if you are a Godiva rewards member, you get one free piece of chocolate a month; the chocolates in their display case have the calories listed on them and range from about 60-120 calories each, depending on what you select. If you have a Godiva store near you check it out! emoticon

I started the sweet tooth challenge and have been reading A LOT of labels and cutting back on my bread -which I love- but just reading the labels too is helping target the hidden sugar.

Hi all, i am using a sugar alternative what is coconut nectar. It is 100% raw and natural, it tastes really nice and rich. You can pick it from Holland & Barrat or Amazon, the brand is called Tiana Organic Crystallised Coconut Nectar. Have a look for me this has been the best thing, i have tried many other brands however this has been my favorite.

I do not use regular sugar. Many years ago, I was addicted to sweetness such as Equal and Splenda. I was able to stop using both. I did it cold turkey and as days went by it got better. Now occasionally I will use Organic Stevia and other times I just drink coffee or tea with nothing added. If I have a latte, it is a skim or almond and no added sweeteners.

I just refuse to eat processed food. If the label has the words "High Fructose Corn Syrup" it goes back on the shelf - period. Cravings go away in a matter of days/weeks if you remain committed. How has this worked for me over that past 6-months -,well here is what I just posted on another board: Goal achieved! Scale reflected 202.0 this morning down from 252.4 on Apr18. That's 50 lbs my fellow Sparkers. Tracking every calorie works!

If you really need a sweetener, try to find Monkfruit - it's marketed under the name of Lakanto. See www.LAKANTO.com.
What I'm doing to reduce my sugar intake is eating VERY Dark Chocolate - 85% and higher. Lindt makes a great one - the more real chocolate it contains, the darker it is and the less sugar - 5mg. or less.

I am so thankful for all your ideas. I am starting a challenge next week and in preparation I have been decreasing/paying attention to sugar this week. It is literally everywhere- hiding! So I have been 1. reading labels 2. cooking at home 3. donating prepared foods with high sugar to the local food pantry 4. cleaning out my cupboards and fridge - removing temptation

First I replaced sugar with artificial sweeteners, after a few months they felt too sweet, so I decreased amount... and a few months and just one tablet felt too sweet.
At start I put 4 tabs in tea, 2 in oatmeal, now it is zero in both,
the fruit I eat has enough sweetness for me.

I would use caution with sorbitol. It is a laxitive and it's long term use effects haven't been studied yet. Any long term laxitive use can do intestinal damage in the long run.

must be good tasting lick-your-fingers sugar free product or I won't use it!
sugar free pancake syrup is cheap and easy to replace sugar for Greek yogurt, coleslaw simple mayo & syrup dressing (instead of vinegar, sugar, milk and mayo) use on stir-fry with ginger and soy sauce, excellent on oatmeal, use it in smoothies, hot or cold tea...use in making bbq sauce
my preference is sorbitol sweetened generic sugar free pancake syrup $2.50 per bottle

caution when baking since it will dry out products, producing a "heavy, dense" result... but bakers find ways around that too.

I've noticed that I switched from artificial sugar to real sugar. It's not as sweet and I don't use it my coffee anymore and sweet tea isn't near as good so I don't drink as much. Knowing there is calories in it helps too.

I've already cut my consumption way down when I started eating better to control my pre-diabetes....so the occasional indulgence in my coffee or the rare dessert doesn't really throw me for a loop.

Have high protein snacks and/or raw veggies to munch on during the day, such as nuts, cheese, celery with natural (no sugar) peanut butter, etc.

The less you eat sugar, the less you like the taste of it. Processed carbs are like sugar, too, so I cut those out, and get my sugar from two fruit per day. Limiting my carbs decreases my appetite so I find that helpful, too.

If the mind mends, the body will follow. Gluten free is working for me!

Good ideas. I'll add read nutrition and ingredient labels. There are plenty of hidden sugars in the foods we buy. Especially avoid high fructose corn syrup.

Preparing and eating real whole foods at home is the best way to control how much sugar you're eating. When you make the food yourself you can add as little or as much sugar (or any other ingredient for that matter) as you want!

Sugar doesn't worry me because I don't have sugar added to my food/drinks, other than mostly from fruit/veggie in their natural state.
