When you are wanting to snack...drink a tall glass of cold water, wait 5 minutes and then ask yourself if you are really hungry or just want to snack. If you are hungry eat something healthy (an apple, cheese or nuts) if you just want to snack I always have low calorie foods that I snack on. Frozen blueberries or carrots are good choices.

If a positive change seems too daunting, ease into it gradually, until it becomes second nature. Tweaking may be needed along the way, and it may take time, but those little bits of just-do-better-than-you-did before will add up to something big.

Exercise daily - even if it is a short 10 minute walk.
At least 3 days a week exercise hard.
Eat clean
Don't worry about the scale -measure yourself
I drink water from a bottle
Watch process foods
Watch eating out - extra calories
Log what you eat
Read the message boards
Give yourself a treat every once in awhile
You want a piece of cake - take a bit and wait 5 minutes before you take another bite. You might not want it.
Food doesn't taste good or your full, stop eating

Start the day with a healthy breakfast.
Go for protein, not sugar.
High protein choices like eggs, yogurt and whole grains, are lower in calories, provide long lasting energy and help to curb mid-morning cravings for sugary pick-me-ups.
and try for at least 8 grams of Fiber. It is another that nutrient that keeps you feeling full longer.

4 years ago I lost about 90 lbs. Over the course of the last 4 years, I've gained and lost multiple times, to the point where I have now gained 40 lbs of that back.

My first tip for success is all in the head. No technique, recipe, exercise or whatever in the world will work if you aren't fully committed to the cause. That is my main problem, that I just don't care enough sometimes, and I start to slack on whatever sound method I have planned to lose the weight. Do whatever you can, whatever it takes, to get yourself in that mindset where you finally aren't making excuses like "a few chips won't hurt" or "missing the one workout this week won't hurt" or "I'll make it up tomorrow." For me, the start to success is all about not making excuses: planning everything I put in my mouth, making sure it fits in my calorie budget, and planning my workouts in advance and fitting them in my schedule first before everything else. I have to be super strict with myself in the beginning, because it's all about forming the habit. Self control is a muscle that has to be trained, you have to get into the habit of being in control and not making excuses. Someone said here that it takes 6 weeks to form a habit, so make your mental exercises your goal, not your weight loss, not your workouts, not your calorie intake. If you can conquer your mind, you can conquer everything else.

Other than that, I like to reward myself with things that I could never justify spending money on. Things like that bottle of perfume that seems too expensive, or a rug for my living room. I like to work out one morning a week, but since I don't like working out in the morning, I run after work in the afternoon for the rest of the week. I like to plan different routes that I run and change them when my body gets used to them. (If you're on a plateau, try changing your route, add intervals, or do something different before you cut more calories out) I went and bought a 48 oz Nalgene that I use to track my water intake. I know that by breakfast I have to have reached a certain level on the bottle, my first snack, lunch, and so on. I try really hard to stick to whole foods and I try to avoid sugar and processed foods as much as I can but with my work schedule and running and the commute, it's hard to cook from scratch for everything.

My final note is that I have become an expert at weight loss. I KNOW all of my techniques work. The problem is my mindset, which causes me to slip, not that my techniques don't work, because they do when they're fully executed properly.

When I feel hungry between meals. I reach for grapes or apples. I don't have a sweet tooth and like my fruit on the tart side. It makes me feel as if I am having a treat every time I eat my fruit.

I take 2 cups of pure water with those snacks and I feel full until my next meal every time.

I've been doing Sparkpeople on and off for a while. I realized writing everything down and being accountable. Now I think twice about eating something if it's going to put me over my calories for the day. Drink lots of water. Exercise when you can, anything you do is a plus.

Taking it one day at a time and not overthinking things helps a lot.
Clean up your diet; dump processed foods and artificial everything.
Forget non-fat and eat healthy fats. (Olive oil, nut oils, avocado, nuts.)
Go heavy on the veggies. Salads are heavenly. (Easy on the dressing.)
No forbidden foods. If I can't have it I'll want it even more. Why torture myself?
Play more, move more. Don't merely tolerate exercise, this won't stick. Find something you love doing, then a workout is fun and time well spent.
Keep track of your progress but don't obsess.
I weigh once a week - this way up-trends can be corrected right away.

I drink lots of water and exercise first thing in the morning. I eat more veggies and when I eat fruit I eat carbs with it to slow down the sugar up take

and understand, that even with all of these tips, you still can veer off track, and that is normal, don't beat yourself up about it. Truth!

I have taken sodium chloride, sugar out of my pantry completely. Salt is substituted with dried herbs - providing better flavors. Sugar is substituted as either select sugar free or a sprinkle of Splenda. Carbohydrate percent of my daily food tracker stays in range.

I have taken all vegetable oils and margarines from my pantry. I only use canola (nut) oil, light olive oil or the best product- Smart Balance Light spread with Omega-3 & Flaxseed oil. Only meats that are 90+% lean. My % Fat slice on the daily tracker is actually less than the recommended range

Above all, portion control. I use a scale. Take a bite or two, put your fork down. Spending a little more time on chewing, relaxing those muscles leading to digestion in between bites can actually signal your fullness feeling faster. emoticon

Be consistent! Whatever you do, makes them LIFESTYLE changes. Will you do them everyday, or a set pattern, whatever works is okay, but when you become a "GYM RAT" but only for a short period of time, and then revert to your old ways, is what gets us to that black hole in the first place.

Lifestyle Changes, One Step at a Time, One Day at a Time....this I can and will do, to the best of my ability!

I'm very fickle about eating plans. Should I do paleo? Soups all day? No S? Intermittent fasting? Count calories? I just can't seem to stick to anything. So I am cutting myself a break and decided that I can do all of those things. I wrote up about 20 different daily eating choices and every morning I pick one for that day.

I agree - trying to eat "perfect" all the time just leads to burnout and overeating. I think this is a great tip to have something you want in a lower calorie way.

Azyln1983,
Whenever I try to establish a new habit, I try to link it to an already established GOOD Healthy habit, creating a habit chain. And sticking up a post it note reminder in a few places might help you until the habit IS a habit. Need an auditory reminder? Ask a good friend to call to gently remind you or check to be sure you took the meds.

Example: I had to get used to taking my thyroid pill 45-60 minutes before eating anything. That seemed impossible for me to remember or work out. So, I started linking that pill to my first foray out of bed in the morning to go to the bathroom. I keep a glass and the pill bottle right there. That created a problem of not remembering if I had taken it or not when I actually woke up for the day. Now they go into a sectioned container with a spot for each day's pill.

It depends upon when you need to take your meds. You might link to brushing your teeth, or taking your shower. Or your meditation routine?

Now, the food diary. Use whatever method you respond to. I don't keep track of an actual paper diary. I've tried and tried. But I DO keep the Spark People Nutrition tracker and actually post everything that goes in my mouth. To start that, I made my nutrition and activity trackers available online. Just the thought that someone might be checking those kept me recording and posting everything.

Give yourself a chance to find out if keeping a food diary will be helpful to you. I like it when I need to check sodium, or postassium, or B12. I can get a pretty good idea of how I'm doing on those things without needing to look up and compute everything myself. And when I started food journaling, I was amazed and how far off my ideas of servings was.

I have had to come up with several 'hacks' to get my water in.
hack 1. fill a 2 liter bottle, put it in the fridge and know that i must finish that during the day.
hack 2. if my water bottle is 2.5 cups and \i'm aiming for 10, i put 4 elastics on it. each time i finish it, i move one of the elastics to the lid. all elastics must be one the lid by the end of the day.
hack 3. 'flavour' water with lemon or cucumber, or strawberrie slices or lime and mint ~ fancy!
hack 4. water can be warm when drinking it too! add a couple of slices of ginger or lemon! ~ yum!

i don't know if you guys have the same McD's value menu where you are, but in Toronto, we have a McDouble.
I like big macs: they are 540 calories...
I have found that I can order a 'McDouble Like A Mac' and it tastes the same as a big mac, only it's about 300 calories because the bun in different! Craving = gone!
also way cheaper! ($3 vs. $5.95 or whatever)
I eat the mini fries in my daughters happy meal (we don't feed her fries if we can help it!) She has the Grilled chicken wrap with the yogurt and AJ... I have soda water and I'm outta there for around 500 calories instead of a 1000!
I know it's not health food, but trying to be 'perfect' leads me to failure. this is a way I can feel like I'm part of the world and have something fast on a busy day that won't break my calorie budget!

Great tips here!

I am on maintenance and what helps me most is to weigh every day and write it on my calendar. I realize this isn't for everyone.

So true. Forbidding certain foods make them have more power over you. I take a bite of that chocolate cake, it tastes wonderful. The second bite its just so-so, the third bite I am just not feeling the same rush as the first. I am done. I haven't wrecked my whole day but I had my cake. emoticon

Somehow there is a part of our psyche that is prone to give in to temptation. If you remove the idea of "forbidden" foods and "cheating" on your nutrition plan it removes the temptation. What works best for me is to banish the word diet from my vocabulary. The word brings negative connotations like being deprived of anything that tastes good and then binge eating those foods when you can't stand not having them anymore. I have no foods that are "bad". I only have foods that are more and less useful to my body. Nothing is "forbidden" in my nutrition plan! I find this helps me actually stay away from foods that aren't as full of useful calories. When I start thinking of a food as "bad" or "forbidden" these days I immediately correct myself and start feeling better immediately.

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.

LOVE YOURSELF FIRST! Right, here, right now, exactly the way you are in this moment. Love yourself. Treat yourself gently, and let go of the guilt. QUIT beating yourself up over that piece of cake, or skipping exercise. The guilt will only make you feel bad, which we all know feeling bad is a sure way of falling down the rabbit hole. Also, the power of positive affirmations daily, even multiple times daily, is so helpful. One last thing, take the time to TRULY ENJOY the food you eat. Turn off the TV, put down that dang cell phone, and focus solely on your food. Chew it slowly, take the time to really taste and feel it, savor it. You will notice it takes far less to satisfy you if you truly enjoy the whole eating experience.

Stop trying to paddle against the current. Instead, point your boat downstream, put down your oars, and go with the flow. Enjoy life because that's what its all about.

My best tip for success: know yourself and figure out what works best for you. Figure out what type of exercise to do and keep at it. What types of healthy foods do you like.

Some people get really motivated by giving themselves rewards when they reach a certain goal, doesn't motivate me. Some people can enjoy a small portion of their favorite foods a couple times a week, others will binge if they start eating their favorite food and do better if they stay away from it.

Also, keep active on a site that is going to encourage you to continue your healthy lifestyle, like SparkPeople.

I find for myself it is not depriving myself good food. If I really want chocolate I will have some but only a bit and it can't be the cheap stuff. I also love to eat more natural foods. Your body feels so much better if God made it over some manufacturer. Finally getting back on track after taking care of someone with cancer for a year. No more emotional eating.

I'm with SEAGLASS, a good night's sleep is the start to a day of good choices, with one caveat...educating oneself to know what good choices are is very important too. SP has been a huge help, so has reading everyone's tips for success.

SEAGLASS, I love the pic of the kitten, what does it say under his paws?
