My gastro recommends eating a big bowl of salad every day. I switch up between iceberg, romaine, red leaf and green leaf.

I prefer spinach or kale because they have more nutrients but iceberg is good for tacos, burgers, ect. So I do use it but not often for salad.

I'm not a fan of iceberg lettuce; I used to use iceberg lettuce, then I discovered iceberg lettuce, is mostly water, with very little nutritional value, I use mostly Romaine and spinach; I sometimes use kale, dandelion leaves, and chard.

Iceburg does have it's own benefits including being high in water content, and iron. As well as trace amounts of a dozen other minerals, and a substance that helps induce sleep if you suffer from sleep issues.
It should be used along with other leafy greens when in a salad, and works just fine as a topping for burgers, sandwiches, tacos, etc.

Also, wrap it in tin foil before storing in the fridge. It keeps it more fresh, and crisp longer. Up to four weeks to be exact. It also works for broccoli, and celery.


ETA: Berry, I don't know how good of a nutritionist your chiropractor is. Studies have shown that iceberg lettuce may reduce common digestive disorders like constipation, acid reflux and irregular bowel movements

I use it along with other green leafy vegetables in a salad and rarely alone as a salad base.

Of course Romaine and spinach are better but the iceburg lettuce is inexpensive and if youre like me and eat alot of salads on a daily basis then it is the most economical. Iceburg tends to last a little longer in the fridge

As a kid I have fond memories of mother cutting iceberg lettuce into quarters and putting thousand island dressing over for salad.

We grew it in our victory garden.

All we had as a kid was iceberg lettuce, but the only way I ever liked it was in a big chunk of a head drowned in salad dressing as served at my college cafeteria...

Later I discovered Romaine and never looked back. I also love butter lettuce (any color) and spinach leaves (baby or otherwise) and kale (only have had baby). Red or green leaf lettuce is also good. I'm too disorganized to get anything but pre washed bag blends from Dole or Fresh Express, but avoid the ones with iceberg lettuce (they spoil fast in the bags also). But if you prefer iceberg- go for it. Just make sure you taste others sometime. They're all very different in taste.

Cabbage leaves are tasty and crunchy in sandwiches, by the way. Don't know how they compare nutritionally with iceberg, but I made that substitution as soon as I had my own refrigerator (sorry, mom). I'll use shredded cabbage as salad fixin's, or Mann's wonderful broccoli slaw. Will also add lots of either into a sandwich. I usually end up with quite a pile outside the sandwich, but a bigger plate takes care of that. They're really good with no dressing.

I like iceburg lettuce mixed with half romaine and that's the most common way I see restaurant salad mix-unless they are using the crap in the bag. But I love the mixed greens and spinach too! Any vegetable is probably better for you than packaged food! But it's certainly my fall-back salad staple when the price of the others gets too high!

The best cure for stressing is to count your blessings...and a long walk won't hurt either!

I grew up eating iceberg and it is still what I really prefer. But I realize other greens are more nutrient dense so mix them into salads. That said, I MUCH prefer iceberg on sandwiches!! And BTW one cup has 77.6 mg of potassium, a nutrient I have a hard time meeting the requirement for. We all think of bananas as a great source of potassium - so 18% as much as a banana isn't too shabby. A cup of spinach has 167 mg of potassium.

I'm a Romaine fan, and I also like the more exotic lettuces, but the other day Romaine was up to 4.99 and iceberg was 1.08, so I bought that and shifted how I'll be using lettuce this week or so. I personally think iceberg is better on tacos and sandwiches and shredded for taco like salads. For straight salads, I prefer the Romaine.

One "trick" is to look for the greenest one you can find. Ironically, people say to weigh heads of iceberg in your hand and get the heaviest one (if you are paying by the head), to get the best value. BUT, sometimes the lighter looser heads actually have more "green" and the heavier dense heads have more "white," and it is the green that has the most nutrients.

One of the most elegant, delicious salads I ever had was in a fine restaurant which served about an eighth wedge of iceberg on a plate, with this absolutely out of sight house dressing. It was very fresh and crisp and wonderful.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of salads - most of them are just lettuce and tomato, and to me that's not a meal. Also, I quit buying iceberg because it doesn't keep as well as romaine or spinach. I would never eat ANY lettuce by itself, gotta throw in some carrots, cukes, etc.

Have you ever tried mustard greens? I like those. Beet greens as well (much like chard), plus you get to eat the beet.

Ha, I hear you, once you get accustomed to eating more flavourful greens, going back to plain old iceburg is.... yeah, you suddenly realize it is very, very bland. Kind of like when you get used to eating quality whole grain bread, and one day you go back and try a slice of grocery-brand sliced white.... blahhh. No taste!

That said, it has its uses. When looking for something to add "crunch" or "bulk" you can't beat it. i.e. on a burger. Spring mix just won't hold up on a burger. Or to add texture-variety to a mixed-greens salad. Or, a salad i really like in summer is torn up iceburg lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, dressed with a good squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkle of salt. It's good and crunchy and fresh and summery, and you just can't make it with leaf lettuce.

tl:dr while your "restaurant salad" may have fallen short on the "is it worth eating scale" - iceburg has its place.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I hear you on the taste. I used to drown my salads in Ranch because the lettuce tasted horrible, but with romaine, I find I can put a Tbsp. of olive oil, and some chicken, and cheese on it, and it tastes so much better.

As I told my doctor, I liked Ranch better than Iceburg lettuce. Amazing what a change in greens can do. So much more flavor

I eat spinach, kale, dandelion leaves, chards and others. I usually do not have dressing on my salads, as I feel it interferes with the taste of the salad components. But this ice burg stuff needed something. Then I looked it up and yes virtually no calories and virtually no nutrients when compared to other dark colored leafy greens. It just seems like a waste of time to eat it. This is what I mean by is it worth it.

Weight is the result of what you have been doing for the past week.

I avoid it on salad bars and don't buy it in bags, but I buy a head once in awhile and combine it with spinach and other dark leafy greens in salads. I like the crunch it adds to salad, although I prefer romaine hearts for that. I also like it once in awhile on sandwiches. Yes, it's worth eating but you wouldn't want it to be your only salad green, since it's more like a salad "white."

Anarie, I'll do that! I tend to just use the more flexible outer leaves for wraps and break out the firm "stem" parts (those get munched like celery) but it can get a bit crunchy to break just right. Either that, or I use the firm interior leaves like a bun (one on either side of my "sandwich"). I'm always up for a new treat, though, so will hunt that down at the next grocery excursion!

So how weird is it that this discussion is making me desperately crave iceberg lettuce?!? Unfortunately it's a 4-hour round trip to the nearest grocery store that carries it. :(

Zastra, try Boston lettuce (sometimes called butter or butterhead lettuce) for wraps. It's even more flexible than iceberg and almost all of the leaves in a head are the right size and shape.

I love the satisfying crunch of iceberg lettuce. While I generally make my salads with romaine and spinach, there's no substitute for a big piece of iceberg on a burger. And if I tried to use most any other lettuce leaf as a wrap substitute, I'd make a huge mess or end up with a soggy, nasty mess.

Iceberg definitely has its place in my crisper drawer!

Who's saying it's bad? The most anyone is saying is there are other lettuces and greens that have more nutritional value, which is true.

I'm not sure where LilSparkGirl is getting the vitamin A information; that seemed high, so I looked it up apparently it's 6% or 7% for one cup shredded.

I don;t understand people saying it's not "good" for you. One cup has 53% of your vitamin A.

Also found this:

there are far worse things you could eat, and there are far better. It's not BAD for you, but there isn't much nutritional value either.

But sometimes I like a good wedge salad and you can't make that with mesclun mix.

Depends on how you define "worth eating".

It is worth eating to me... lots of water, crunchy, filling, fibrous. I have it with other greens every day at lunch.

Ice Berg Lettuce has more water content than Romaine....and romaine has a higher nutrient count. Maybe a mix of ice Berg and romaine would suit you, with some radicchio. When dieting we need all the nutrients we can get.

What do you mean by "worth eating"? It has next to no calories, so go ahead and eat it if you like it because it's never going to be a question of "does this have enough nutrition in it to justify the calories".

On the other hand if you're looking for a certain amount of nutrition from your greens you're better off with lots of other choices. Pretty much anything you might be interested in you can find nutritional information for with google.

Iceberg lettuce contains water and some fiber and some vitamins and minerals. It isn't as nutrient dense as other leafy greens but it is very crisp (and low in calories).

it's better than not eating any vegetables but not as good as any of the darker green leafies.
